LIVERPOOL TO JOIN SPURS, BAYERN, AND ROMA IN SINGAPORE PRE-SEASON TOUR

SINGAPORE, 2023, APRIL 04 – As reported by The Straits Times , Liverpool FC is set to return to Singapore for their pre-season tour in July. The team is expected to participate in a friendly tournament at the National Stadium , where they will be joined by other top European teams like Tottenham Hotspur FC , Bayern Munich , and AS Roma .

This pre-season tour marks Liverpool’s return to Singapore after their successful visit in 2022, where they beat Crystal Palace FC 2-0 in front of a 50,000 crowd to lift the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy . Liverpool has a large fanbase in Singapore, and their previous visit was a great success, generating excitement and enthusiasm among football fans in the country.

The friendly tournament will not be part of the International Champions Cup , which was last held in Singapore in 2019. The cancellation of the 2020 edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic had disappointed football fans, as Liverpool, fellow English giants Manchester United FC , and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund were lined up to play in the tournament.

Liverpool’s participation in the friendly tournament in Singapore also means that they will avoid a tour of the United States , which is the conventional pre-season plan for top European clubs, alternating between Asia and the US every summer. Liverpool’s manager, Jürgen Klopp , has previously suggested that the timing of the team’s Asia tour last season may have led to fitness problems for key players, and as such, Liverpool is expected to work on their fitness closer to home before flying to Asia in the third week of pre-season.

Football fans in Singapore are eagerly looking forward to seeing the likes of Mohamed Salah , Virgil van Dijk , and new addition Cody Gakpo light up the National Stadium.

The tournament may also throw up tantalising clashes, including a potential match between Roma and Tottenham, where Roma’s manager, Jose Mourinho , will face his former club.

The Reds are set to return to Singapore this summer as part of their preparations for the 2023-24 campaign.

Jürgen Klopp’s side will meet Leicester at the National Stadium on Sunday July 30 when they will again compete for the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy, which they won against Crystal Palace on last year’s pre-season tour.

That match will be followed by a meeting with Bayern at the same venue on Wednesday August 2, with the winner set to lift the Singapore Trophy, presented by Audi and Standard Chartered Bank.

Tickets for both fixtures are now on general sale here .

Football: Liverpool to play Crystal Palace in Singapore at National Stadium on July 15

football tour in singapore

SINGAPORE - The wait to see their heroes in person is over for local Liverpool fans as organisers of the inaugural Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022 confirmed that the English Premier League giants will be in Singapore in mid-July.

Teg Sport and Left Field Live on Tuesday (April 26) revealed that the Reds will play fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace at the National Stadium on July 15 and will hold an open training session at the same venue the day before.

Tickets for the match start from $149 while those for the open training session are $39. They go on sale on May 17 at Ticketek Singapore's website.

Only vaccinated people will be allowed into the 55,000-seater National Stadium for the match. Details such as pre-event requirements will be made available on the ticketing website.

StarHub, home of the Premier League for the next six seasons, will also broadcast the match live on its new channel, Hub Premier.

With the country’s relaxed Covid-19 measures taking effect on Tuesday, the event is not expected to have a capacity limit, unlike December’s Suzuki Cup (10,000 per game) and the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens earlier this month (12,000 a day).

The exact number of tickets available for sale has not been revealed, but managing director of Teg Asia, Brendon Bainbridge, is confident of filling the stadium as he anticipates significant interest from fans here and in the region.

He said: “Liverpool is a brand that is very strong in the region, not just in Singapore. There’s lots of pent-up demand for die-hard football fans to come along so we’re very confident.

“It has been challenging but the news we got on Friday (about the relaxing of rules) has been encouraging. We’ve got almost three months till the match so we’re hoping for further easing."

While anticipation among Reds die-hards has been on a high since The Straits Times first reported the news on Feb 15, some have expressed concern on social media at the ticket prices.

They noted that they are much higher than the $38 starting price for the 2019 International Champions Cup Singapore, a quadrangular that featured English fan favourites Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan. It was the last time European giants set foot on the National Stadium turf.

Facebook user Clement Nedelcu wrote: "Uhhh.... $149? as much as I would like to attend after 2 years of covid, I'll have to pass. Going with the kids that would be a budget of $450. Sorry but no."

Others were wondering if they would get their money's worth. Teo Sisi said: "$149.00 better have 1st team, otherwise anyone think it's worth the price if they play reserve(s)?"

The Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy is part of both clubs' pre-season tour of Asia before the new season starts on Aug 6. Liverpool are also due to play Manchester United in Bangkok on July 12.

The last time Liverpool were in the Republic was in 2011 when they held an open training session. Before that, they beat the national team 5-0 in 2009 in a pre-season friendly also at the old National Stadium.

Ben Latty, commercial director of Liverpool, said the club are excited to take part and be in Singapore again.

He said: "Pre-season is a vital time of year for our players, it's hugely important preparation for the season ahead and it's also a perfect opportunity to meet with our fans around the world.

"We eagerly await the sound of our fans filling the National Stadium in Singapore as we take on Crystal Palace in July, it's going to be a great finish to our 2022/23 pre-season."

While Liverpool are no strangers to Singapore, it will be Crystal Palace's first visit to the Republic. However, they have played Liverpool in Asia, losing 2-0 in Hong Kong in a pre-season match in 2017.

football tour in singapore

The Eagles are currently 14th in the EPL standings. Led by Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, they made a brave run to the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2016, before going down 2-0 to Chelsea.

Palace chairman Steve Parish said the club are looking forward to seeing their fans in Singapore.

He added: "We know Singapore is full of passionate fans who follow the Premier League from afar and we hope to attract many more supporters to Crystal Palace by the end of our trip."

Former Palace midfielder Andre Moritz, who was present at Tuesday's press conference along with former Reds player Jason McAteer, said it would be a good experience for local football fans.

The Hougang United player said: “I can see how much Singaporeans like the Premier League and how much they support their teams. This is the first main (football) event (since the pandemic) and it will be special.”

The Reds are in rampant form this season, chasing an unprecedented quadruple. They won the League Cup and are second in the Premier League, just one point behind defending champions Manchester City with five games left.

They have also reached the Champions League semi-finals, where they will face Villareal over two legs, and will meet Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 14.

McAteer said: “We know (winning the quadruple) is doable but we don’t like to run away with ourselves. If we do it, fantastic.

“Psychology plays a big part now. As far as we’re concerned, we can only do what we do and that’s win football games. I wouldn’t put it past them to win the Premier League. The Champions League is the one I really fancy in Paris but we’ve got to get past Villareal first.

“We don’t want to be greedy but it would be nice if we do do it (win the quadruple).”

Fans can register their interest for tickets on the waitlist on Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022's website from Tuesday.

Tim Cook leaves Singapore after week-long Asia tour

Tim Cook began the week in Vietnam , then spent Wednesday in Indonesia , and rounded out the week with two last days in Singapore . While Apple does not release Cook's schedule, it appears that his tour has concluded, and he's posted a last few photos and videos from it.

Cook's last evening in Singapore consisted of his visiting the Apple Marina Bay Sands store. Musician Benjamin Kheng was performing a concert there.

Tonight's performance by artist @benjaminkheng and producer @evanturetime at Apple Marina Bay Sands was unforgettable! The energy was electric, and it was such an incredible moment for customers and the team at a beautiful spot in Singapore! pic.twitter.com/DntSnRhiUI — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 18, 2024

The following morning, Cook again breakfasted with users. In this case, it was food entrepreneurs Faz and Amiera.

It was great to experience Faz and Amiera's love of food and get a taste of their entrepreneurial spirit! They showed me how they use MacBook Air, iPad, and iPhone to bring their hot honey and sambal businesses to life. pic.twitter.com/aCwgWELDlX — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 19, 2024

Cook then visited the new Apple Developer Center in Singapore. He met with developers, students, and Apple Design Award winners.

From solving puzzles to training knights, Jakob, Tongyu, Chiny, and Yiwei shared demos of their games with me at the new Apple Developer Center in Singapore. I loved hearing about your journeys... as students, teachers, and Apple Design Award Winners! pic.twitter.com/x2T3PW04c7 — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 19, 2024

To round out his travelogue, Cook concluded with a message about Singapore being an amazing country. He ended his posts with a shot from what appears to be the Apple Marina Bay Sands store and the staff there.

Travel time cut significantly for JD Bertrand's rooting section with hometown Falcons pick

football tour in singapore

SOUTH BEND — The logistics of sports parenting just got a whole lot easier for Jim and Christine Bertrand.

Former Notre Dame football linebacker JD Bertrand will stay close to home after the Atlanta Falcons took him in Saturday’s fifth round (143 rd overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft .

“I was ecstatic,” Bertrand said in a conference call with Atlanta reporters from suburban Roswell, Ga. “Right when I looked down, I saw the Flowery Branch number, and I said, ‘Let’s go.’ “

After serving the past two years as a team captain and leading the Irish defense in tackles from 2021-23, Bertrand has joined a rebuilding franchise that has its practice facility about a 53-minute drive from the Bertrand home.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta, where the Falcons play their home games and where Notre Dame will face Georgia Tech this fall, is only about a 40-minute drive from Roswell.

JD’s older brother John Michael Bertrand, the former Notre Dame baseball left-hander, is in Double-A with the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the San Francisco Giants organization.

JD Bertrand: Taking the measure of JD Bertrand ahead of Senior Day for Notre Dame football

“I couldn’t imagine a better situation, a better scenario,” JD Bertrand said. “My mom was saying the whole week, ‘Well, maybe there’s a chance he’s close to home.’ The ND trips, they’d drive 10 hours up there, 10 hours back on a weekend.”

JD Bertrand: 'Energy and excitement' await Notre Dame football linebacker JD Bertrand in Dublin

Unable to work out for teams after suffering a torn plantar fascia on the first day of Senior Bowl practices, Bertrand had to rely on his game tape and chalk-talk acumen in the pre-draft process.

“I really wanted to work out,” he said. “I really think I would have showed a lot of people numbers that they maybe would not have expected from me. I think I would have tested really well.”

His goal in the 40-yard dash, for instance, would have been “the high 4.5’s” with something just over 4.6 seconds acceptable as well.

“It’s unfortunate but I can only control what I can control,” he said. “I made sure my classroom setting, the football side of it is probably top-notch for me compared to a lot of guys. I made sure I focused on that even more.”

Bertrand’s rookie contract will include an estimated $349,000 signing bonus and a four-year value of $4.37 million, according to Spotrac.

The first player from Blessed Trinity Catholic to reach the NFL, Bertrand has suited up for state championship games that were held in the Falcons’ home dome. Now he gets to take the field as a Falcons rookie.

“That’s always been the dream,” he said. “Now I get an opportunity to continue to improve upon that dream and make it everything I dreamed of.”

Many airlines have 'stopover' programs that let travelers tour a city between connecting flights, and some will even pay for a hotel — here's how to book them

  • Many people intentionally book flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city.
  • Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food.
  • These stopovers benefit travelers, airlines, and the carrier's home country by boosting tourism.

Insider Today

A special segment of adventurous travelers will purposely book itineraries with long connections in layover cities just to leave the airport and explore for a few hours or days between flights.

Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

It's basically a vacation within a vacation.

Although it sounds too good to be true, stopovers benefit everyone involved. Travelers get more choices and don't have to be confined to an airport, airlines gain customers who may have otherwise chosen a nonstop option on a competitor, and the carrier's home country sees a boost in tourism.

Plus, the cheap or complimentary accommodations typically come at a small cost to airlines, thanks to partnerships with local hotels or tour companies.

Not all stopover programs are structured with an emphasis on tourism, though, as some were created simply to offer conveniences during long layovers. Still, they are a way to secure a free hotel and explore an extra city.

Here are 22 global airline stopover programs, each lasting anywhere from hours to months.

Many carriers allow stopovers to be added to a regular cash booking, but some are only available via award tickets . This means the flight was paid for using points/miles or a combination of points/miles and cash.

Air Canada has a stopover option built into its Aeroplan loyalty program. It allows customers booking award flights to add a stop on international journeys and explore practically any city the airline flies to outside the US and Canada.

The add-on costs 5,000 Aeroplan points each way and can only be booked if the stop is at least 24 hours, capping out at 45 days.

Air France/KLM

Air France and Dutch carrier KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program offers a stopover of 24 hours or more in a connecting city on either carrier or their airline partners.

The option is free to add to award tickets, and passengers can stay up to a year in the stopover city.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers a free one-night hotel stay for transfer passengers with connection times lasting between six and 30 hours, though there are some time and route restrictions.

Breakfast and transportation are included for eligible travelers.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines' Panama stopover program allows customers to spend anywhere from 24 hours to seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City, on their outbound or return trip.

The option is free for the first stopover, but a second stopover can cost up to $250 plus taxes. Copa offers discounted hotels and tours that can be booked via its stopover website.

Emirates allows a stopover in Dubai with the option to add discounted tours or hotel bookings to the itinerary via its website.

The UAE carrier also has a " Dubai Connect " program that gives passengers with layovers between 6 and 26 hours, depending on the cabin, a complimentary hotel, transfers, meals, and any needed visa.

Dubai Connect only triggers if the customer takes the next available flight. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel.

Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines' transit program gives customers flying via Addis Ababa a free hotel, transit visa, and transfers during layovers lasting between eight and 24 hours.

The hotel on the airline's website is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, located inside the airport.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways offers a stopover in its Abu Dhabi hub, which comes with an undisclosed discount at select three-star hotels for up to two nights.

Two and four-night stays can be booked at more luxurious four and five-star hotels at a 40% discount. The minimum stay is 24 hours.

Although Etihad's website says it is temporarily unavailable, the airline used to allow eligible travelers to use a so-called Transit Connect Package that provided a free hotel near the airport for layovers lasting 10 to 24 hours. It is unclear when or if the program is returning.

Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways offers a stopover program in Fiji for those traveling to and from Australia, New Zealand, and other South Pacific nations.

Related stories

Hotels and activities like ziplining and beach resorts can be booked through the airline as part of the stopover package.

Finnair allows passengers to book 6, 12, or 24-hour layovers in Helsinki at no additional fare charge and outlines itinerary ideas and information on its website , like transportation, free walking tours, and restaurants.

Customers can book a hotel through the airline and earn Finnair Plus points.

Iberia customers can plan a stopover in Madrid to or from an international destination for one to six nights at no extra cost.

Discounts on hotels, excursions, and transfers in the Spanish capital are available through Iberia.

Icelandair offers a stopover option for one to seven days in its capital city of Reykjavik on transatlantic itineraries for no additional charge.

The airline offers itinerary help and assistance in booking excursions and tours. Hotels need to be booked separately.

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines considers itself one of the "most stopover -friendly" carriers in the world.

The stopovers, which trigger at 24 hours, are not limited to JAL's hubs in Tokyo but can be enjoyed in places like Osaka and Kyoto using the airline's multi-city booking tool.

Latam Airlines

Latam Airlines offers stopovers for between one and three days on flights that connect in São Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Manaus, Curitiba, and Belem. Only international itineraries that connect in São Paulo.

Hotels and amenities can be booked via Latam, but the stopover booking is free.

Oman Air offers customizable stopover packages to give travelers time to explore the country's capital, Muscat, and beyond. An additional fare charge may be applicable, though the airline does not fly to the US.

Packages and a-la-carte options include discounted hotels for up to three nights, as well as organized tours, meals, and transfers.

Australian flag carrier Qantas offers its stopovers in a similar manner to JAL in that multi-city bookings can be manipulated to add extra days between flights in layover cities, like Bangkok, Osaka, or San Francisco.

This comes at no extra cost on eligible Qantas fares and can be used on its Oneworld partner airlines.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways' stopover program allows passengers with a minimum layover of 12 hours and up to 24 hours to choose from a list of deeply discounted four and five-star hotels. Certain flight itineraries allow for up to four nights.

Nightly hotel rates start at $14 per person for 1 night at four-star standard hotels, with premium five-star beach hotels starting at $30 per person for one night.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Royal Jordanian Airlines' transit program gives economy and business-class travelers with at least eight and six-hour layovers, respectively, a free hotel room, meals, and transit, assuming certain fare conditions are met.

However, the connecting flight must be the earliest possible — meaning, similar to Emirates, passengers can't intentionally book a longer layover to be eligible for the complimentary perks.

Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines, or SWISS, has a multi-city stopover booking tool on its website that allows passengers to find itineraries with extra days in Switzerland.

The cost of hotels and other perks is on the customer, though.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines' stopover program is available via the multi-city tool, similar to other carriers, where travelers can add hotels, transfers, and activities. The stopover can last one to seven days.

Singapore also offers free transit tours to passengers with layover times between five and a half and 24 hours at Singapore's Changi Airport. It's first-come, first-serve and includes sightseeing around Singapore.

TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal allows customers to add a stopover in Lisbon or Porto between one and 10 days, offering discounts on hotels, food, and activities.

It also offers 25% off a domestic flight to a second Portuguese destination, like the Azores or Madeira islands, to take during the stopover.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines' stopover program gives economy travelers a one-night free hotel stay and business flyers a two-night free stay if the period between their connecting flights in Istanbul exceeds 20 hours.

Those traveling from the US in economy class can stay up to two nights in a four-star hotel, while those traveling in business can stay up to three nights in a five-star hotel.

  • Official Cyclone Ireland Tour

Ames, Iowa – Iowa State will play its first-ever football game outside of the United States when it opens the 2025 season against Kansas State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, August 23, 2025, at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.

"We are extremely grateful for this opportunity presented to us by Aer Lingus to provide the young men in our football program an unrivaled educational, cultural and athletic experience," said Jamie Pollard, Iowa State's Director of Athletics. "Iowa State fans enjoy a tremendous reputation for following the Cyclones wherever they play, and we look forward to seeing them travel with us to The Emerald Isle for the 2025 season-opener."

The Cyclones and Wildcats will meet for the 108 th time on November 30, 2024, in Ames to close the 2024 regular season. Both teams will then play on Week Zero of the 2025 campaign with the sixth college football game ever played at Dublin's 48,000-seat Aviva Stadium, the first in Ireland to feature Big 12 Conference institutions and the first-ever meeting between the longtime rivals in a season-opener.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for the Big 12 Conference to play one of its classic rivalries on a global stage while showcasing our University and its football program," said ISU head coach Matt Campbell . "We are honored that Aer Lingus selected the Cyclones to participate in this prestigious game, which will afford a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our student-athletes to experience international travel while also helping to grow the game of college football outside of the United States."

It will mark the first time since 1997, the Big 12's second season, that Iowa State has opened its football season with a league contest and the earliest date ever that the Cyclones have kicked off the season.

The Aer Lingus College Football Classic aims to bring American college football to Ireland annually to promote Ireland as a travel destination, and 2025 will be the fourth-consecutive season that college football begins its season with a game in Dublin. Florida State and Georgia Tech will kick off the 2024 campaign in Ireland with an excess of 21,000 U.S. fans traveling overseas for game week. ESPN's College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will be on hand for the Aer Lingus Classic, broadcasting live from Dublin on Saturday, August 24.

"We are thrilled to welcome Iowa State and Kansas State to Dublin for the 2025 Aer Lingus Classic," said John Anthony, Co-Founder of the Aer Lingus Classic and Executive VP, Collegiate of On Location. "Kicking off the season with this classic Big 12 Conference rivalry game will bring a heightened level of excitement to another expected sell out Aviva Stadium.

"This matchup was selected because of the high-quality play from both teams, as well as the passionate fan bases that follow them," he added. "We look forward to providing the experience of a lifetime to the student-athletes and their loyal fans who travel to Ireland. Special thanks to Coach Campbell and Jamie Pollard for embracing this special opportunity for all of Iowa State University."

Aviva Stadium, which opened in 2010, was built on the site where historic Lansdowne Stadium once stood. Previous college football games played in Aviva Stadium include a pair of Notre Dame-Navy games (2012 and 2023), a Georgia Tech-Boston College game in 2016 and the 2022 Nebraska-Northwestern game. All-told, the ISU-KSU football game will be the 10 th played on Irish soil.

"I welcome the news that Kansas State University and Iowa State University have been chosen to play the fourth match in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic series", said Catherine Martin, Ireland's Minister for Tourism.  "This event is now a firm fixture in the Irish sporting calendar and provides a huge boost to tourism and hospitality in Ireland and indeed creates a great atmosphere in Dublin for visitors and locals alike. We look forward to welcoming the teams and supporters to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin and beyond, as they go on to explore other parts of Ireland, in August 2025."

As title sponsor, Aer Lingus is responsible for transporting the teams and their delegations to Dublin on dedicated chartered flights. Aer Lingus, the Irish flag carrier, operates from 17 North America destinations direct to Ireland as well as offer seamless connections to Europe for U.S. travelers via its hub at Dublin airport.

"The Aer Lingus College Football Classic provides us with a unique opportunity to drive awareness of the Aer Lingus brand in our key North American market," said Susanne Carberry, Aer Lingus Chief Customer Officer. "We have a proud history of connecting the U.S. and Ireland – flying to 17 destinations in North America this summer – and we are committed to growing this transatlantic network so we can continue connecting North America to Ireland and Europe through our Dublin hub.

"The Aer Lingus Classic draws substantial numbers of American visitors and gives the opportunity to showcase Ireland as a destination through this exciting event," Carberry said. "We look forward to welcoming both the Kansas State and Iowa State teams to Ireland for the game in 2025."

Iowa State fans can visit Cyclones2Ireland.com to learn more about the game and sign up for ticket updates including official Iowa State travel and hospitality packages which will become available in late May.
