The different types of travel insurance plans

Not all travel insurance policies are the same. Whether you're an avid backpacker or planning your very first overseas getaway, you can find an insurance plan that suits your specific needs.

What does travel insurance cover?

While your personal policy can differ depending on the insurer you choose, an all-inclusive travel insurance plan typically includes the following types of coverages.

Medical insurance

Trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption insurance, baggage & personal effects insurance, flight & travel accident insurance, how much is travel insurance.

Travel insurance premiums differ on a case-to-case basis, but you can expect to pay about 4 to 10% of your trip's cost for a standard policy. Learn more about how to get your own travel insurance quote today.

How your travel insurance quote is calculated

Old age can lead to more expensive travel insurance rates as you’re statistically more likely to make a medical claim.

Not all travel insurance policies cover pre-existing medical conditions – you may need to purchase specialized coverage for a higher premium.

Destination

Visiting high-risk areas can increase your travel insurance quote as you're more likely to face implications such as illness and theft.

The more expensive your trip costs, the more expensive your insurance will be – insurers have to pay out more if you’re in need of a refund.

Trip duration

It’s no surprise that a month away from home will cost more to insure than a weekend getaway – extended coverage means higher premiums.

Coverage type

A basic policy might not include trip cancellation insurance, but you’ll also be paying less when compared to an all-inclusive package.

FAQ: Canadian travel insurance

Do you need travel insurance.

While travel insurance isn’t required by law, getting coverage ahead of time is the smart and financially responsible thing to do. The cost of an overseas implication is generally much higher than if it were to happen at home, so travel insurance can offer your extra protection and peace of mind.

Medical care is the best example of this as most health insurers – public or private – won’t cover you overseas. Because of the high cost of healthcare, an uninsured emergency while you’re travelling can cost you thousands of dollars out-of-pocket.

Do you need travel insurance within Canada?

Since public healthcare in Canada is provided at a provincial or territorial level, it’s still a good idea to purchase travel insurance when taking a domestic trip. Your public health insurance will provide some form of medical coverage out-of-province, but you may still face additional expenses – including bills for ambulance rides, medical testing, or dental work. Having the right travel policy in place ensures you won’t be left on your own to cover these gaps.

Also, keep in mind that a travel policy isn’t only limited to coverage for medical expenses. You may want to purchase trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance for your out-of-province stay to ensure you won’t lose out on any pre-paid expenses in case of an emergency.

Is travel insurance worth it?

Yes, travel insurance is worth it – the price of a policy is just a small fraction of what you might otherwise need to pay during a financial emergency. And even if you don't end up using the coverage, having protection just in case can still be worth the peace of mind.

Where can I buy travel insurance in Canada?

Right here! You can get a customized quote and secure your policy online with our travel insurance partner today – in just a few minutes, you'll be good to take off.

Can you get travel insurance after leaving Canada?

Yes, our partner allows you to purchase travel insurance while you're already overseas. There is, however, a 48-hour waiting period from your policy start date in which you won't be able to claim benefits for injury or illness. Be sure to read the full terms and conditions as there may be additional exclusions to your coverage when binding a last-minute policy.

Keep in mind that other providers might not offer insurance to travellers that have already departed, so it’s always best to prepare far in advance.

Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Many travel insurance companies now offer specialized coverage for COVID-19. Double-check your policy to ensure you’re protected against risks associated with the virus.

What doesn't travel insurance cover?

To understand the exact coverages you'll receive, be sure to read the specific terms of your policy. Every insurer is different, and you wouldn't want to be left on your own during a financial emergency.

Some common exclusions on travel insurance plans include:

  • Non-emergent health services (e.g. routine check-ups)
  • Non-emergent dental care
  • Mental health implications
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Pregnancy – speak to an agent ahead of time
  • Incidents related to alcohol and drug usage
  • Incidents related to illegal activities
  • Trip cancellation due to an unlisted reason (e.g. fear of flying)
  • Incidents related to extreme sports (some insurers offer specialized adventure sports packages)

Also, keep in mind that each insurance company deals with pre-existing conditions differently. You may need to sign a waiver ahead of time to make sure you're covered for any emergency medical expenses related to your case.

And of course, like all types of insurance, your policy will only protect you put to a stated limit. So while you may be covered for various risks, you might still need to foot part of the bill.

Our goal is to make affordable travel insurance coverage available to as many Canadians as possible. In general, any Canadian resident can purchase some form of coverage with us. Factors such as where you are travelling, your health and the length of your trip may affect the specific coverage(s) available to you.

Note : Non-residents travelling to Canada, immigrants to Canada or foreign students studying in Canada may be eligible to purchase one of our Visitors to Canada Plans.

Generally speaking, no. While your age can affect your eligibility for certain coverages, we have packages and plans that cover all age groups. If you are age 65 or older, we may ask you to answer a few questions about your health to make sure you have the most appropriate coverage.

Yes, you may purchase a policy for your parents. Simply call us at 1-866-896-8172 , buy online , or visit an RBC Insurance Store . Depending on their age, they may be required to complete health questions in order to obtain coverage. If this is not a requirement, please keep in mind that all terms and conditions apply to your parents, therefore we recommend that you review the insurance with them prior to purchase.

Possibly. Depending on your age, medical condition and, if applicable, your answers to our health questions, pre-existing medical conditions are covered if they are stable for a certain time period (as specified in your policy) before your policy's effective date.

Note: Please refer to the policy document for complete coverage details regarding pre-existing conditions.

Your answers to the health questions (if applicable) will be used to help determine the benefits you are eligible to receive under your insurance policy.

When answering the health questions:

  • Take your time. The questions may take up to 10 minutes to complete.
  • You (the applicant) should complete and sign the Medical Questionnaire. (If you have someone else complete the Medical Questionnaire on your behalf, it is still your responsibility to make sure the answers to the questions are correct.)
  • Read and answer each question carefully and accurately. Review your answers to confirm they are correct. Incorrect answers may lead to your coverage being voided or your claim denied.
  • Have your prescriptions or a description of your medications nearby for reference.
  • If you are unsure about any questions regarding your medical condition or medications, please speak to your physician.

If necessary, a family member or close friend can complete the questions on your behalf. Please keep in mind, however, that it is still your responsibility to sign the form and make sure the answers are correct.

Yes, it is recommended that you buy coverage for your spouse as well.

This answer depends largely on your child's age.

  • If your child is under 2 years old and you are purchasing the Deluxe Package or a TravelCare ® Package, then your child receives emergency medical coverage at no extra cost.
  • If your child is 2 or older , you'll need to purchase emergency medical coverage for him or her.
  • No matter how old your child is , if you've purchased an airline ticket or made a separate trip deposit for him or her, consider buying a travel insurance package or trip cancellation and interruption insurance .

The right coverage for your trip depends on several factors, including (but not limited to) where you're travelling to, how long you’ll be gone, the kind of transportation you'll be using and, in some instances, your overall health. View all of our travel insurance products now.

An accident, illness or medical emergency can happen anywhere, anytime. If you need medical care or treatment in another country, your government health plan may cover only a portion of the costs. Travel insurance starts where these plans leave off.

Plus, with our emergency medical coverage, you have access to the multilingual representatives of Allianz Global Assistance.

Yes, if you are travelling outside your home province or territory. There are several reasons why it's important to get travel medical insurance when you're travelling within Canada. One reason is that accidents can happen anywhere. Another is that government health insurance plans do have limits on reimbursement of emergency medical expenses incurred while you are in another province. For example, the ambulance, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered by some government health insurance plans.

You may extend your coverage if you extend your trip, subject to certain conditions of your policy.

If you've purchased a single trip plan, the following conditions apply:

  • If you have not had a medical condition during your trip or while covered under your policy, you can request an extension by contacting us at 1-866-896-8172 before your original policy’s expiry date.
  • If you have had a medical condition during your trip and while covered under your policy, you must request the extension by contacting Allianz Global Assistance before the expiry date of your original policy. Your extension is subject to the approval of Allianz Global Assistance.
  • You must pay the required additional premium before your original policy’s expiry date.
  • If we are unable to extend your particular policy's coverage due to the trip duration limits of your policy, you may be able to purchase a new policy from us.

If you've purchased a multi-trip annual plan, the following conditions apply:

You may purchase a top-up policy for the additional number of days beyond the duration covered by your multi-trip annual plan as follows:

  • Before your effective date, you may contact us at 1-866-896-8172 to purchase top-up coverage.
  • After your effective date and if you have not had a medical condition during your trip, you must contact us at 1-866-896-8172 before your original policy’s expiry date to purchase top-up coverage.
  • After your effective date and if you have had a medical condition during your trip, you must contact Allianz Global Assistance before your original policy’s expiry date to request approval for and to purchase top-up coverage.
  • The terms, conditions and exclusions of the new top-up policy apply to you.
  • You must pay the required top-up premium on or before the effective date of the top-up period.

If you do NOT top-up your coverage for a trip, you will not be covered for any claims you make outside the period of insurance for that trip. If the top-up policy you are purchasing requires you to complete health questions, you must complete the health questions.

Please see the policy documents for complete coverage details regarding trip extensions.

It may, but not always. We recommend that you carefully review the travel insurance coverage provided by your credit card, as well as any special conditions or stipulations.

Do you have an RBC Royal Bank ® credit card?

To review the travel insurance coverage that comes with your RBC Royal Bank credit card, visit: www.rbcroyalbank.com/cards/documentation/index.html and click the "Insurance Certificate" link for your card.

We recommend that you carefully review your government health plan coverage. Government plans may not cover all emergency medical expenses once you leave your home province/territory and typically cover only a limited portion once you leave the country. In fact, the Canadian Government (Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada) urges Canadians to purchase supplemental health insurance when leaving the country. They say:

Do not rely on your provincial or territorial health plan to cover costs if you get sick or are injured while abroad. Out-of-country health care can be costly, and your health plan may not cover any medical expenses abroad. It is your responsibility to seek information from your provincial or territorial health authority and to obtain supplementary travel insurance and understand the terms of your policy. 2

Plus, government health insurance plans don't guarantee coverage for special care (air ambulance or emergency dental services, for instance).

Unlike government health insurance plans, our insurance offers you:

  • Unlimited coverage for eligible medical expenses 1
  • Up-front payment of eligible medical expenses whenever possible
  • 24-hour, multilingual emergency medical assistance—one toll-free phone call puts you in touch with a multilingual professional who will refer you to a local doctor or facility in order for you to receive the care you need

Government health insurance plans also don't provide coverage for situations such as lost, damaged or delayed baggage or trip cancellation and interruption. Our travel insurance can provide these coverages and more.

Yes, you do need travel insurance to protect yourself against the unexpected, even if you are going to the United States for a few days. An illness or accident can happen at any time, whether you're on the road for a few days, or a few months. And remember, the cost of health care is very expensive in the United States and very little of this cost would be covered by your government health insurance plan, credit card or company benefits plan. For a short trip, the cost of travel insurance is minimal, and it gives you the protection you need.

If you purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance, it will help pay for your expenses to return home in the event of a covered emergency. There are a number of circumstances that qualify as an emergency (for example, the death or serious illness of a family member). The cost of cancelling a trip prior to departure can be very expensive, as most trips are non-refundable and/or non-transferable, especially if you have to cancel just before leaving on your trip. Having to return early from a trip can also be very expensive. Either way, trip cancellation and interruption insurance is very important to protect your travel investment.

You must purchase coverage before departing on your trip. You may benefit from purchasing coverage as soon as you make your initial trip deposit, especially if you are purchasing trip cancellation and interruption insurance —either as stand-alone coverage or as part of one of our insurance packages .

If you were to book your trip 6 months in advance, consider the unexpected situations that could occur in that time.

If you purchase travel insurance from RBC Insurance, we will pay the eligible bills directly to the hospital or physician whenever possible.

There are a number of sports that are not covered during your trip. For more details, see the Exclusions section of the individual policy document.

You may purchase a top-up policy for the extra number of days beyond the duration covered by your multi-trip annual plan. Here are the conditions:

  • After your effective date and if you have had a medical condition during your trip, you must contact Allianz Global Assistance before your original policy’s expiry date to request approval for and purchase top-up coverage.

Please see the policy document for complete coverage details regarding top-up coverage.

If you purchase one of our travel medical insurance plans—either Classic Medical or TravelCare ® Medical—you can, subject to certain conditions:

  • If you are travelling for more than 183 days, you may purchase single trip coverage for up to 365 days provided that you are covered under your government health plan for the full duration of your trip.
  • If you are 40-74 years of age , you must also answer a few health questions, which will determine whether you are eligible to purchase coverage for trips beyond 183 days.

Yes, if you are travelling with your spouse/partner and children or other family members, you could save money with our family plan pricing.

The cost of a trip can be a significant financial investment. A lot can also happen in the time between booking your trip and departing—if a medical emergency or other unexpected event prevents you from going on your trip, you could potentially lose some (or possibly all) of the money you paid.

With trip cancellation and interruption insurance, you're protected when certain situations prevent you from travelling as planned. Examples include:

  • You can't travel due to an illness, job loss or immediate family member's medical emergency
  • You need to return home earlier than scheduled because of a family emergency or medical condition

Note : We strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance at the time you pay your initial travel deposit. Please see the policy document for complete coverage details, including terms and conditions.

Yes! Tell them about our Visitors to Canada Plans , which offer affordable emergency medical protection to visitors, immigrants, foreign students and Canadians without government health plan coverage.

We strongly recommend you do. Your insurance policy is a valuable source of information and contains provisions that may limit or exclude coverage. Please read it before you go, keep it in a safe place and carry it with you when you travel.

RBC Insurance has appointed AZGA Service Canada Inc. (operating as “Allianz Global Assistance”) as the provider of all assistance and claims.

Whether you have a new claim or questions about an existing claim, representatives will work with you to make things as easy as possible. Visit the Travel Insurance Claims page for more details about how to submit a claim.

It's our goal to settle every claim as quickly as possible. While every claim is different, there are things you can do to speed things up:

  • If you require emergency care on your trip , call our emergency contact number immediately, or at the earliest possible opportunity (someone else can call if you're unable to). If you do not, your coverage may be limited and your benefits could be reduced.
  • If you need to cancel your trip prior to departing , call your travel agency, airline, tour company or the carrier immediately to cancel your trip no later than one business day after the cause of cancellation. Call Allianz Global Assistance the same day.
  • For all claims , carefully read the instructions for submitting your claim. Make sure you fully complete any required claims forms and submit all required documentation at your earliest possible convenience. For example, you may need to provide information on your past health history if you are submitting an emergency medical claim or a trip cancellation claim due to a medical condition.

The documentation you need to provide will depend on the type of claim, the type of plan you purchased and the province/territory in which you live. Visit the Travel Insurance Claims page for more details about how to submit a claim.

Best Travel Insurance Canada

The demand for travel insurance has noticeably risen, largely because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Numerous Canadian travelers have faced the chaos and financial hardships induced by the pandemic, thereby realizing the vital role of travel insurance.

According to the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association, the Canadian travel insurance industry paid out $950 million in claims in 2020 due to trip cancellations caused by the pandemic. Insured travelers were reimbursed for their lost flights, cancelled hotel rooms, and missed reservations, while those without travel insurance lost thousands of dollars.

To help travelers choose the best insurance plan for their needs, this guide compares the top travel insurance plans for 2023. The comparison includes coverage options, costs, and post-Covid-19 protection. By comparing these plans, travelers can make informed decisions and enjoy their trips with peace of mind.

What is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance policy that safeguards your investment in a trip. It provides coverage for financial losses incurred due to a cancelled or interrupted trip, emergency medical care during travel, emergency evacuation, damage to a rental car, lost luggage, and more. Medical care coverage is particularly important in Canada, where out-of-province care is more expensive and offers less coverage than in the patient’s home province.

Travel insurance can be purchased as an individual policy or added on to a travel purchase, such as a flight. Some credit cards also offer travel insurance as a benefit when used to make a travel purchase.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

The coverage provided by travel insurance varies depending on the insurer and the level of coverage selected. However, most travel insurance policies typically cover the following:

  • Emergency medical care: This covers the cost of medical treatment in case of an accident or illness during the trip.
  • Trip cancellation: This covers the cost of the trip if it is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, or death.
  • Trip interruption: This covers the cost of the trip if it is interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, or death.
  • Lost or damaged baggage: This covers the cost of replacing or repairing lost or damaged baggage.

When selecting a travel insurance plan, it is important to consider the specific needs of the trip. For example, a basic plan covering just flight cancellation may suffice if the traveler already has supplemental individual medical coverage and is traveling within Canada. However, a comprehensive plan with emergency medical care and evacuation coverage may be necessary for a ski trip to the French Alps.

Manulife’s CoverMe is one of the most popular travel insurance providers in Canada. Their Single Trip All-inclusive plan offers comprehensive coverage, similar to other comprehensive travel insurance plans. When selecting coverage, it is important to evaluate the level of risk, the availability of healthcare in the destination, and the affordability of a cancelled trip.

What Are the Different Types of Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is a must-have for any traveler. It protects you from unexpected events that can ruin your trip. There are several types of travel insurance available, each with its own unique benefits. Here are the most common ones:

  • Baggage insurance – This type of insurance covers you if your luggage is lost or delayed. It provides you with some spending money to purchase essentials or replaces your lost items.
  • Emergency medical insurance – This essential type of travel insurance covers you in case you get injured or sick while away. It ensures that you receive the medical attention you need without worrying about the cost.
  • Trip cancellation – If you need to cancel your trip due to an emergency back home, this coverage will reimburse you for the nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Trip interruption – If you miss a connection flight or need to return home early, this insurance will cover you during your trip.
  • All-inclusive policies – These policies include all of the above insurance types. They provide comprehensive coverage, making them ideal for those who want to be prepared for anything.

When purchasing travel insurance, consider how much you will be traveling in the year. Single-trip and annual coverage options exist. Annual plans may save you money if you intend to travel two or more times per year.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of travel insurance varies depending on several factors such as age, destination, length of trip, and desired coverage. For instance, a 30-year-old single traveler could pay as little as $26 for a week with a basic plan, while a comprehensive plan could cost up to $125. It is advisable to opt for plans that include emergency medical coverage. To find the best policy for you, it is recommended to use a comparison tool to get personalized travel insurance quotes.

When to Consider Buying Travel Insurance

It is recommended to purchase travel insurance at the same time you book your trip to ensure greater protection. Waiting until later may put your investment at risk if something happens between booking and purchasing insurance. Keep in mind that once a problem arises, it is too late to buy insurance. Therefore, it is best to buy travel insurance as soon as possible to avoid losing your investment.

How Credit Card Travel Insurance Works

Credit card travel insurance is a benefit that comes with many credit cards. Before purchasing a separate policy, it is worth checking what your card includes, as you may already have sufficient coverage. However, keep in mind that you are typically only covered for expenses purchased on that credit card. If you buy your plane tickets on one card and your hotel on another, the first company will not reimburse you for a hotel issue. Additionally, terms and exclusions may be more restrictive than a standalone policy. The best travel credit cards offer comprehensive coverage, including trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical coverage, and more.

Does Travel Insurance Cover COVID-19?

Many travel insurance plans now offer coverage for Covid-19-related expenses, including cancellation and medical expenses. Some plans even offer stand-alone Covid-19 travel insurance. However, it is important to carefully verify the details of the policy before purchasing, as coverage may be explicitly excluded if the destination country or region is under an “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” advisory at the time of purchase. Additionally, Covid-19 vaccination status may affect coverage, as insurers may declare claims ineligible for those who are unvaccinated by choice.

It is also important to note that specific Covid-19 plans may only cover Covid-19-related expenses and not automatically include coverage for other medical needs. As Covid-19 coverage and news change frequently, it is recommended to check with service providers for the latest information.

Below is a summary of what travel insurance may cover for Covid-19-related expenses:

  • Reimbursement for costs incurred from mandatory quarantine
  • Coverage for Covid-19-related medical expenses
  • Trip interruption and cancellation coverage

Overall, it is advisable to carefully review the policy details and consult with service providers to ensure adequate coverage for Covid-19-related expenses.

Do I need private health care coverage when travelling outside Canada?

When travelling abroad, it is always recommended to have travel medical insurance. Healthcare prices and standards can vary significantly, and some public provincial plans may offer insufficient coverage. Even if your provincial plan covers some expenses, it may only pay what the cost would be back at home, not the actual price at your destination. In some cases, you may have to pay out-of-pocket and request reimbursement later.

In countries like the United States, treatment can be exceedingly expensive, with an average overnight stay in a hospital costing around $14,000 CAD. Private health care coverage can help cover these costs and prevent financial strain.

Moreover, in some countries, healthcare facilities may request payment upfront and refuse treatment if you are unable to pay. This makes emergency medical insurance extremely valuable, as it can ensure that you receive the necessary treatment in case of an emergency.

Do I Need Travel Insurance Within Canada?

While the Canada Health Act guarantees basic emergency care to Canadian citizens and residents, it does not cover prescription drugs and ambulance services. Therefore, it is recommended to have medical travel insurance while travelling within Canada.

It is important to note that OHIP coverage from Ontario will not cover private hospital, laboratory, or paramedic services while visiting British Columbia. In addition, payment for medical services may be required upfront, leaving the traveller responsible for seeking reimbursement from their home province upon their return.

Canadian residents travelling within Canada may qualify for a discount on their medical travel insurance. One popular insurer offers a 50% discount compared to their abroad plans.

Travellers who do not have adequate travel insurance while travelling outside of their province or territory assume the risk of paying out-of-pocket for medical expenses. It is recommended to compare the best travel insurance medical plans anonymously to protect oneself while travelling in Canada.

It is important to check if one already has sufficient coverage through a supplemental individual or group private health insurance policy.

What is the Best Travel Insurance for Visitors to Canada?

When it comes to choosing the best travel insurance plan for visitors to Canada, it is important to consider the individual needs of the traveller. Many leading Canadian insurance companies offer medical travel insurance plans that can be tailored to meet the unique requirements of non-residents in the country for vacation, business, or visiting family.

It is also worth noting that some visitors may already have insurance plans available to them from their home country.

Good to Know

If you are sponsoring a parent or grandparent to visit Canada, it is mandatory to purchase super visa insurance. This insurance is designed to provide medical coverage for a minimum of one year and can be renewed for up to 10 years. It is important to compare different super visa insurance plans to find the best one that suits your needs. Check out our super visa guide for more information and comparisons.

What are the top travel insurance companies?

The best travel insurance company for an individual depends on their specific needs and travel plans. In Canada, popular private health insurance companies that offer travel insurance include 21st Century, Allianz, AMA, BCAA, BMO, CARP, CIBC, Desjardins, GMS, Goose, Johnson (Medoc), Manulife CoverMe, Medipac, RBC, Scotiabank, TD, and World Nomads. It is important to compare coverage and prices to find the best fit for each individual’s travel needs.

What Travel Insurance for Seniors Covers

Travel insurance for seniors provides increased medical coverage and coverage for pre-existing conditions. Leading plans offer emergency medical insurance adapted to the needs of senior travellers. Coverage includes:

  • Increased medical coverage compared to other plans
  • Coverage for stable pre-existing conditions

Note that coverage may vary depending on the specific plan and provider.

What Does Travel Insurance for Snowbirds Cover?

Snowbirds, who are often retirees travelling to warmer climates during the Canadian winter, need to ensure they have appropriate travel medical insurance. Such insurance policies commonly cover medical treatments, prescription medications, paramedics and ambulance rides, repatriation to Canada, and emergency dental care. However, elective treatments are not usually covered by snowbird insurance policies and should wait until the traveller returns to Canada.

It is important to note that snowbirds may be more at risk for a medical emergency while away due to the length of their trips and underlying health conditions. Additionally, many snowbirds travel to warm parts of the United States, which has the world’s highest medical care costs. Therefore, having adequate travel insurance is crucial to avoid potential financial burdens and ensure access to necessary medical care.

How to Purchase Travel Insurance Online

The simplest way to buy travel insurance is by using an online comparison tool. This tool allows you to compare rates and coverage options quickly without revealing personal data. Alternatively, you may purchase travel insurance through a travel agent, an insurance broker, your private individual or group health insurer, or a travel credit card.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Cruises?

Travel insurance plans frequently offer coverage for cruises. When looking for a plan, it is important to ensure that it includes coverage for cruise travel insurance. For instance, RBC offers two popular packages, namely Deluxe and TravelCare (for seniors), which cover a range of scenarios:

  • Cruise cancellation or interruption due to mechanical failure or weather
  • Catch-up costs for a missed departure due to a cancelled flight
  • Unused shore excursion tickets (due to illness or injury)
  • Last-minute cancellations due to a covered reason
  • Lost luggage, passports, and medications
  • Eligible emergency medical expenses
  • 24-hour worldwide emergency medical and travel assistance
  • Repatriation costs

It is crucial to review the policy details to confirm the extent of coverage and any limitations or exclusions.

How AXA Travel Protection Can Benefit Visitors to Canada

Here’s the entire list of benefits travelers can have access to with an AXA Travel Protection Plan:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Additional Optional Travel Benefits:

  • Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.
  • Cancel for Any Reason: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders; this optional benefit gives travelers more flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason outside of their standard policy.
  • Loss Skier Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate some costs associated with pre-paid ski tickets that you or your traveling companion cannot use due to specified slope closures.
  • Loss Golf Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate the expenses linked to prepaid golf arrangements that you or your travel companion are unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

Americans aren't required to purchase domestic or international travel insurance to visit Canada. But it’s still highly recommended to have a travel insurance plan before embarking on your next trip.

Why? There are several reasons:

  • Medical Emergencies: Your health is a top priority. If you face a sudden illness or injury in Canada, travel insurance offers the means to receive prompt and quality medical care.
  • Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue on.
  • Flight Delays: Travel disruptions like flight delays can happen. If you miss a connecting flight or incur additional expenses due to delays, travel insurance can help cover the costs.

In general, travel insurance to Canada costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost: The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age: Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Canada will be offered three tiers of insurance: Silver, Gold , and Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Travel Insurance requirements for Canada

Travel insurance is not mandatory for US travelers coming to Canada, but having coverage for medical emergencies is a smart move. It's also worth checking if your visa, entry requirements, or tour operator call for extra coverage.

As of October 2023, Canada has eliminated all COVID-19 entry requirements. However, it's crucial to be mindful of your health. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms before your trip, consider postponing your travel plans to Canada. Having Cancel for Any Reason as part of your travel insurance plan becomes invaluable in such a scenario. This optional benefit provides the flexibility to cancel your trip, even for a reason beyond standard coverage.

Canada does not have specific vaccine requirements for travelers. However, due to COVID-19, travel requirements may change from time to time. Stay up-to-date on vaccine requirements and recommendations by consulting official sources such as the Government of Canada's website.

Traveling with pre-existing medical conditions can complicate your plans, but with AXA Travel Protection, we're here to support you during your trip.   Our Gold and Platinum  plans offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.  The Platinum plan, in particular, is our highest-offered choice for travelers who want our highest coverage limits and optional add-ons,

What does this mean for you? If you've got a medical condition hanging around, you can qualify for coverage under our Gold and Platinum plans with a pre-existing medical condition , so long as it’s within 14 days of placing your initial trip deposit and in our 60-day look-back period. We're here to ensure you travel easily, no matter your health situation.

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the Silver Plan , Gold Plan , and Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Canadian hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses.

The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage aligned with the Canadian experience. " Cancel for Any Reason " offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the " Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver) " offers assistance when you're out exploring Canada's stunning landscapes in a rental car.

Additionally, part of the Platinum Plan is the " Lost Skier Days " benefit, offering potential reimbursement if ski resorts unexpectedly close due to ever-changing snow conditions. These perks make the Platinum Plan an excellent option for anyone seeking comprehensive protection during their exciting Canadian adventures.

FAQs about Canada Travel Insurance

1. can you buy travel insurance after booking a flight .

Absolutely, travelers have the option to purchase travel insurance for Canada after they've booked their flights.

It's advisable to purchase travel insurance for your trip as soon as you have made your initial trip deposit (prepaid and non-refundable trip costs.)   AXA Travel Protection offers coverage as soon as you purchase your protection plan. We can give coverage against unforeseen events before you leave for your trip.   Additionally, our policies offer coverage for preexisting medical conditions and Cancel for Any Reason if you purchase your protection within 14 days of making your initial trip deposit.

2. Do US citizens need travel insurance to Canada?

Travel insurance to Canada from the USA is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. While Canada’s healthcare system is fantastic, it might not cover all your medical expenses as a non-resident and medical bills can add up fast.

3. What type of medical conditions does AXA Travel Protection cover?  AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency medical expenses are unexpected incidents that arise, such as broken bones, burns, unexpected illnesses, and allergic reactions.  Emergency evacuation and repatriation can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.     Non-medical emergency evacuation and repatriation can cover evacuation assistance when you immediately leave a destination for non-medical-related events. These could be things like natural disasters or civil unrest.

Need advice selecting a plan?

Frequently asked questions, why does any canadian travelling out of country need travel insurance if a traveller gets sick when travelling, won't their government health insurance plan pay for their medical expenses.

Please refer to the Government of Canada website for their recommendation on this matter:  https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/documents/travel-insurance

Is medical travel insurance necessary when travelling within Canada?

Government health insurance plans do have limits on the reimbursement of the emergency medical expenses incurred while in another province. For example, air and ground ambulance costs, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered outside your province of residence. For maximum protection, purchase additional medical coverage even while travelling within Canada.

In the case of a medical emergency I am supposed to call the Assistance Centre. What if I don't get a chance to do that - will I still be covered?

We ask you to call our Assistance Centre ( 1-877-372-2988 ) so that we can confirm your enrolment under the plan, and, with the healthcare provider, manage the benefits in accordance with your policy. By calling the Assistance Centre, you may avoid out-of-pocket expenses. If you do not call the Assistance Centre, you will have to pay 20% of the medical expenses normally covered under this insurance. If it is medically impossible for you to call, please have someone call on your behalf. It is your responsibility to ensure that the Assistance Centre has been notified.

Can coverage be extended during my trip?

If you are already on your trip, you can extend coverage by calling Customer Service provided there has been no claim, no injury, sickness, or symptom has occurred that would give rise to a claim, or a change in your health. In addition, you must request the extension before your coverage expires and pay the appropriate premium. If you have a medical condition or pending claim, approval of the extension of your coverage is subject to approval.

If you have a Multi Trip Plan,  you must top up your coverage before you leave home by purchasing an Emergency Medical Top-Up plan for the additional number of days beyond the duration provided by your Multi Trip.

COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan [To be kept within the Travelling Canadians section]

What is covered if I need to quarantine at location, duration of coverage, maximums?

Scotia Travel Insurance offers a COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan, which offers coverage in the event of quarantine outside of Canada. Coverage is for expenses such as your additional and unplanned commercial hotel and meal costs. You may receive:

1.            Up to $200 per day to a maximum of $2800 per person; or

2.           Up to $400 per day to a maximum of $5600 per family if you purchase family coverage.

These amounts are in Canadian dollars and coverage is provided for up to 14 days.

Does the COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan provide coverage with an “avoid non-essential travel" advisory, and if yes what happens if the Government changes it to a “avoid all travel"?

If on your departure date, an “avoid non-essential travel advisory” is in place for your destination, and your emergency or medical condition is unrelated to the travel advisory, you may submit your claim. Note: For claims due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) the “avoid non-essential travel advisory” does not apply.  Claims relating to treatment for Coronavirus (Covid-19) that you experience on a cruise, may be submitted if you are fully vaccinated.

If the advisory changes to “avoid all travel”, and you departed prior to the date the travel advisory changed, you will continue to have medical coverage for COVID-19 and related complications for the full duration of your trip. Treatment for Coronavirus (Covid-19) that you experience on a cruise, may be submitted if you are fully vaccinated.

Are Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests that are required in destination or prior to returning home covered under the Pandemic Plan?

No, PCR tests, vaccines, immunizations, visas, passports, and other travel requirements are the responsibility of the traveller and are not covered under the COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan.

Is there trip cancellation coverage prior to departing Canada within the COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan?

The COVID-19 Pandemic Plan does not have any trip cancellation coverage. This plan includes emergency medical benefits and trip interruption benefits. You may also consider purchasing a Trip Cancellation/Interruption Plan.

Does Manulife, the underwriter of the Scotia Travel Insurance program, pay upfront for medical, and/or quarantine benefits?

In the event of a medical emergency, insured individuals must contact The Assistance Centre, who will arrange direct billing of covered expenses, where possible. If you choose to pay eligible expenses directly, the Assistance Centre will reimburse you subject to the terms and conditions of the coverage.

Can coverage be extended during my time abroad?

If you already have coverage, simply call Customer Service. You may be able to extend your coverage, as long as:

a. your period of coverage does not extend beyond 365 days;

b. you remain eligible for insurance under this plan;

c. we have received the extension requests prior to the expiry date of your existing polcy issued by us; and

d. there has been no change between single or family coverage.

For policy extensions, no losses or expenses or benefits will be paid for any illness or injury which first appeared, whether diagnosed or not, or for which treatment may or may not have been received, prior to the effective date of the extension of coverage under this policy.  If you have a medical condition or pending claim, approval of the extension is subject to the approval.

Hospital and medical bills can easily run into thousands of dollars. Would I need to pay up front if I had an accident while travelling?

As outlined under your plan, it is essential that you contact our Assistance Centre prior to receiving medical treatment. The Assistance Centre has existing relationships with certain medical providers all over the world to help ensure emergency situations are handled as smoothly as possible. Our Assistance Centre will communicate with your medical provider, arrange direct billing where possible and coordinate payment for the emergency service received.

What is the maximum number of coverage days under this policy?

Under this policy, the maximum number of coverage days is 365 days. Upon expiry of a policy that has been in effect for 365 days (366 days in a leap year), you may purchase another student policy for the following term if you are eligible for coverage.

Why do I have to call the Assistance Centre prior to receiving any medical treatment?

The Assistance Centre will explain coverage, monitor care, pre-approve treatment and confirm enrolment to the service provider and explain the coverage to healthcare providers to help ensure that medical services are provided in accordance with the benefits of your policy.

How can an applicant fill out an application if he/she is not in Canada or available to complete the application?

To apply for coverage, an applicant or someone on his/her behalf may complete and sign the Visitors-to-Canada application. If someone other than the applicant completes the application, that person must ensure that he/she has full authorization to apply on behalf of the application and full knowledge of the applicant’s health information to complete the application accurately. Any incorrect statements on the application may make the policy null and void.

Are refunds available?

A refund is available if you cancel the policy at any time before the effective date of insurance (minimum $25.00). When you obtain Canadian government health insurance plan coverage from a Canadian province or territory, or return home before the scheduled return date as per the confirmation, and no claim has been initiated or reported or assistance services have not been provided, refunds are available for the unused days of the trip (minimum $25.00).

We ask you to call our Assistance Centre so that we can confirm your enrolment under the plan and, with the health care provider, manage the benefits in accordance with your policy. By calling the Assistance Centre, you may avoid any out-of-pocket expenses. If you do not call the Assistance Centre, you will have to pay 20% of the medical expenses normally covered under this policy. If it is medically impossible for you to call, have someone call on your behalf. It is your responsibility to ensure that the Assistance Centre has been notified. See your policy for details.

What is travel insurance?

There are two main types of travel insurance: travel medical insurance and trip cancellation/interruption insurance .

Travel medical insurance can help to cover the cost of medical care if you become sick or injured while travelling. It can also help to cover the cost of travel if you need to be transported to a hospital in another country. This is the most common type of travel insurance.

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance can help to reimburse you for the cost of your trip if you have to cancel due to an unforeseen circumstance, such as illness or bad weather, or other situations that may delay or cancel your trip (lost baggage, transportation delays, etc).

If you are planning a trip from your home in Canada, or planning on travelling to Canada, it is important to ensure you have travel insurance before you depart. This will help to protect you from unexpected costs if something goes wrong on your trip and give you peace of mind such accidents or delays will not be a financial burden.

Who needs travel insurance?

There is a wide array of insurance needs for both those visiting Canada, and travelling away from it. They include:

Inbound travellers

  • Visiting Canada from another country
  • Super visa applicants
  • International students studying in Canada
  • Foreign workers or work permit holders working in Canada
  • Amateur athletes competing in Canada

Outbound travellers

  • Snowbirds (seniors vacationing away from Canada for the winter)
  • Canadians vacationing abroad

What are the different types of travel insurance available in Canada?

Depending on where you call home, and the reason and length of your travel, there are several different kinds of travel insurance available.

Residents of Canada need travel insurance for trips abroad. While you public healthcare or group health insurance covers medical emergencies at home, an accident or medical emergency while you are out of country can be very costly.

Those visiting Canada from outside the country also need travel medical insurance. While Canada does have a robust public healthcare system, these services do not extend to non-residents of the country. If you are ill or injured during your trip to Canada, you will be responsible for the costs of doctor's visits, emergency care, prescription, and more.

Super visa insurance

Parents and grandparents or Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for a special Canadian visa called the super visa. This visa allows them to enjoy an extended stay in Canada for as long as 2 years. A mandatory stipulation of super visa approval is holding a medical insurance policy to cover and illnesses or accidents that can occur during this trip. Super visa insurance is a widely available insurance policy that caters to the specific needs and requirements for super visa eligibility.

Snowbirds are retired Canadians who spend the winter season abroad to avoid Canada’s colder months. As a snowbird, it’s important to make sure you have the right travel insurance in place before you head south for the winter, as you will not qualify for public health insurance at your destination.

International students often need emergency health insurance wherever they choose to complete their studies. This includes both Canadians studying abroad and students completing their education in Canada. Emergency travel medical insurance ensures one can focus on their studies knowing they won’t have to deal with an unforeseen medical bill.

Foreign workers visiting Canada for temporary or permanent employment will not have immediate access to public health care. Travel medical insurance will cover you if you get sick or injured while working in Canada.

Why should you buy travel insurance?

Whether for a vacation abroad or a visit to Canada, travel medical and health insurance is very important.

For Canadian travelling abroad

  • Canadian public health care or your provincial health insurance plan may not cover medical expenses while you are outside Canada
  • Your work or group benefits health plan may not cover, or only cover a portion, of the costs of your medical bills abroad
  • Foreign medical facilities are generally expensive and often require immediate payment
  • Some hospitals and clinics in foreign countries will refuse treatment if you do not have enough insurance coverage or funds to pay for your treatment

For those visiting Canada

  • You are not covered under any of Canada's public healthcare plans
  • Treatment for medical emergencies and prescriptions may require cash payments
  • Your home country's public health care offering generally does not cover trips abroad
  • Travel medical insurance can cover a broad range of potential situations, including emergency room visits, transportation back to your home country, and prescription drug and dental costs

Frequently asked questions

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of travel insurance is determined by many variable factors including the type of insurance you purchase, your age, the duration of the trip, and the amount of coverage you are getting. A rule of thumb is travel insurance should typically cost 5% of your trip. Of course, these costs can increase for extended stays like super visa insurance , insurance for snowbirds, and insurance for students or foreign workers.

Can't I just use credit card travel insurance?

While knowing there is a built-in insurance component to your credit card provides great peace of mind, it sometimes falls short of comprehensive travel coverage. Insurance from credit cards usually has a cap on the amount of coverage it provides and is not intended to cover you for medical emergencies that may occur on an extended trip. Moreover, credit card travel insurance is also limited in that its coverage typically only extends to those parts of your trip you paid for using that credit card.

An independently purchased travel insurance policy ensures you are covered for your entire trip and whatever may happen during its duration.

Does travel insurance cover pre existing conditions?

Most travel medical insurance policies do not cover a pre-existing medical condition by default.

In some cases, if you have shown no symptoms or diagnosis of a pre-existing medical condition for 180 days prior to the effective date of the policy and have not had treatment for the condition during that time, it will not be considered a pre-existing condition during your coverage period.

As well, some conditions may get excluded from your travel medical insurance coverage during the underwriting process. A pre-existing condition exclusion could include a heart condition, kidney condition, form of dementia,

Lastly, some providers offer policies that will cover pre-existing conditions, though the premium will be higher to compensate for the added risk.

Can you get a refund for travel insurance?

You can typically get a refund for a travel insurance policy as long as you cancel the coverage before the departure date of your trip.

Is travel insurance mandatory?

Most travel insurance is not mandatory, though encouraged as foreign medical expenses can add up quickly. Without travel medical insurance you are personally responsible for any medical expenses you incur during your time away from your home country.

Some travel insurance policies are mandatory. For instance, super visa insurance is mandatory for super visa applicants to get approved for their policy, and an in-force policy is compulsory for the duration of your stay in Canada using the super visa.

Does provincial healthcare cover you when travelling abroad?

No, a public healthcare plan from your province or territory does not cover medical emergencies that happen outside of Canada. Much like how Canada’s public healthcare does not cover those who do not reside in Canada, the healthcare in countries outside of Canada has no reciprocal agreement to treat travelers. Canadians are expected to pay out of pocket for any health or medical procedures they need when outside of Canada.

Thus, it is important to have an in-force travel medical insurance policy when travelling outside of Canada and your home province.

Can I get travel insurance after I have left Canada?

Yes, it is possible to get some coverage, though there will most likely be exclusions on your policy. Many providers in Canada or abroad will offer you emergency medical travel insurance if you have already left Canada but wish to purchase coverage.

However, the policy generally will not be active until 48 hours after you purchase the coverage. This waiting period is designed to prevent someone from acquiring a policy after they have been injured or hospitalized with an illness.

Should I buy an individual policy for each trip I have planned or an annual travel policy?

If you travel abroad often (more than twice per year) it may be worthwhile to purchase an annual travel policy. Many providers offer annual options for their travel medical insurance policies, which can save you money on premiums and eliminate the need to arrange separate insurance policies for each trip you take or each leg of a multi-trip journey. Many Canadians travel during winters to warmer climates ( snowbirds ), it is advisable to buy multi-trip / annual travel insurance for such needs. Speak with our advisors to see if an annual travel insurance policy makes sense for your plans.

What is travel insurance?

You’ve spent months planning for your big getaway vacation – everything from flight tickets to hotel stays have been booked. As soon as you land, however, you find that the airline lost your luggage. Losing valuable belongings and the hassle of getting new ones can put a damper on your much-awaited trip, and the loss that you incur may be a couple of hundred dollars. But you can rest assured that your insurance company will reimburse you for it if you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy.

However, the stakes could be higher. Not only does travel insurance cover you for lost or delayed baggage, but also prevents you from paying out-of-pocket for expensive health care in a foreign country. An accidental fall can lead to a dislocated shoulder or worse, a medical emergency like a stroke.

Travel insurance includes:

Medical expenses: This includes emergencies that arise during your trip. The insurer will cover hospital bills, diagnostic tests, and medication for something as minor as a fractured ankle to an emergency evacuation. It also includes ambulance costs, being airlifted out of a remote location, or repatriation back to Canada.

Baggage delay or loss of personal items: The insurance provider covers the cost of delayed baggage or damaged personal items.

Trip cancellation or interruption: This coverage reimburses you for costs if you cancel your trip or cut it short. For instance, falling ill before your trip or death of a family member back home. This coverage is usually not offered in standard travel insurance policies and can be purchased as an add-on.

Trip delay: If your flight has been delayed, this coverage reimburses you for accommodation and meal expenses. Depending on the terms of the policy, a minimum amount (six to 12 hours) of delay is required to be eligible for this coverage.

Travel insurance policies do not cover:

Pre-existing health conditions.

Routine dental or medical appointments.

Cosmetic procedures.

High-risk activities like adventure sports.

Destinations that the Canadian travel advisory lists as “Avoid non-essential travel” and “Avoid all travel,” because of the risk involved.

As a prerequisite to entry or obtaining a visa, some countries – Bhutan, Qatar, and the Schengen visa required for Europe, for example – mandate purchasing travel insurance.

The Canadian government advises all travellers to purchase travel insurance. Not only for international trips, but even within Canada, as provincial healthcare may not be sufficient to cover gaps in coverage.

Whether you are travelling for work or pleasure, are a snowbird or a digital nomad, a frequent flyer or going on your first trip, consider travel insurance as an investment in your safety. While it may not seem necessary, it’s there to protect you and provide peace of mind while abroad.

You should ideally, purchase travel insurance ahead of your trip. However, don’t just opt for the first insurance provider that you stumble across. When shopping for travel insurance, be sure to determine the type of coverage you require, policy coverage limits, inclusions and exclusions, and the policy deductible.

At LowestRates.ca, all you have to do is enter a few details about yourself and your trip, and we will find the cheapest travel insurance rates from a wide range of insurance companies.

But don’t just take it from us.

Its worth taking some time to read through the terms of the policy to make sure you are getting the lowest travel insurance quote that is best suited to your needs.

Types of travel insurance plans

In the world of insurance, there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all.’ The good news is that you can customize your travel insurance policy and opt for coverage that is best suited to your needs.

How much does travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance doesn’t have to be expensive.

We used our travel insurance quoter to find out the cost of travel insurance. The best rate per trip for:

non-smoking,

40-year-old male traveller

on a 10-day trip to the United States

with no pre-existing health conditions,

$5 million in coverage,

and a $0 deductible

While travel insurance quotes will vary depending on the coverage one opts for, insurers use certain factors to calculate the rate. These include:

The number of people the travel insurance policy will cover

The duration of the trip

The total cost of the trip

Amount of coverage required

Amount of deductible

When compared to the hefty bills that you would be paying out-of-pocket if something one runs into a medical emergency in the US, about 30 bucks is a small amount to pay.

One way to make sure you’re getting the lowest rate available for your coverage requirements is to compare travel insurance quotes across various providers. A quick three-minute exercise can save you hundreds of dollars that you would otherwise potentially shell out on travel insurance.

Travel Insurance checklist

Before purchasing travel insurance, it’s important to understand what coverage you will be receiving. Be sure to read the fine print or speak with your insurance provider to understand what may and may not be covered.

Here’s a quick checklist that can help you with the travel insurance purchase process.

What does the travel insurance policy cover?

What are the exclusions of the travel insurance policy?

What are the limitations on the policy? For instance, if opting for multi-trip insurance, what are the number of days that you will be covered for on one particular trip?

How much is the deductible on the travel insurance plan?

What are the limits on medical emergencies?

Can I extend my insurance coverage from abroad if I extend my trip?

If travelling within Canada, what is covered under my provincial health plan? And what is not covered?

Inquire about add-ons to your policy – can I get a rider or endorsement for adventure sports?

What if I have a pre-existing health condition? Does that mean I am not eligible for travel insurance?

What if someone covered under my policy has a pre-existing health issue?

Do I have to fill out a health questionnaire?

What if an epidemic breaks out in the destination? Will the plan provide coverage?

What if the government of Canada issues a travel advisory while I am in the destination? Will my travel insurance plan provide coverage?

Will the plan cover repatriation costs?

Does the insurance company offer worldwide emergency assistance 24-hours and 7 days a week? How can I reach the company if there is a medical emergency? Who do I call? Are there translation services for providers in the country you are travelling to?

How do I file a claim? Is the claims process easy and straightforward?

Does the plan have direct billing, or do I have to pay for bills upfront?

Your travel insurance questions, answered.

Why do i need travel insurance.

International travel is fun and exciting, but it can also be unpredictable.

Often times you’re operating in a different culture, in a different language, and with a different medical system. Whether it’s damaged luggage or a serious health emergency, travel insurance can help keep you safe if things go wrong while you’re away from home.

Travel insurance is likely the last thing on your mind while you’re mapping out your getaway, but medical emergencies and logistical snafus can happen anywhere. So, it’s a good idea to buy a policy that covers you. We’ll help you compare offers from Canada’s leading travel insurance providers and bring you the cheapest travel insurance possible.

Why compare with LowestRates.ca?

We bring you the best rates from the top travel insurance providers. Simply provide a few, quick details about you and your trip, then click ‘Compare’ to see the best travel insurance quotes available. And just like that, you have the cheapest rate for your travel insurance coverage requirements.

I’ve already left for my vacation. Can I still purchase travel insurance coverage?

The short answer is probably not. Most insurance companies will not allow you to purchase coverage for your vacation while you’re on said vacation.

But who decides when a vacation officially begins, anyway? If you’re travelling by plane, for instance, some insurers might say your vacation begins when you’ve gone through customs. For others, it might begin as soon as you check-in at the airport.

There’s no universal standard, so it may be worth a quick call to your insurance provider to clarify.

Most companies will let you purchase insurance up until the day before your departure – you may even be able to purchase it on the day of (in your Uber, on the way to the terminal). If you’ve already left your home province, a smattering of insurers offer after-departure insurance. But this kind of policy typically comes with a heavy list of conditions, and it can be pricey.

Generally speaking, don’t leave insurance-buying until the last minute. But if you do, call your insurer and see what they can offer you. Better late than never.

Do I need travel insurance to travel between provinces in Canada?

Yes, you need travel insurance for trips within Canada.

Why? Because while you are covered under your home province’s health care plan when you travel out of province, your coverage will be limited. Every provincial health care system is different, and the cost of medical procedures varies by province. That means if you require health care while travelling within Canada, your existing coverage will only pay the equivalent of what that medical service would cost in your home province.

For example, an Ontarian who requires emergency surgery in British Columbia will only be covered for what that surgery costs in Ontario, and you may be forced to pay thousands of dollars more to make up the difference.

Your provincial plan also does not cover the following services while you’re out-of-province: Prescription drugs Dental emergencies Medical transportation back home Emergency air or ground transportation While some provinces have billing agreements, not all of them do. That’s why it’s important to stay covered even inside Canada. Travel insurance is an affordable alternative to the costs you could incur if you experience a medical emergency.

Your provincial plan also does not cover the following services while you’re out-of-province:

Prescription drugs

Dental emergencies

Medical transportation back home

Emergency air or ground transportation

While some provinces have billing agreements, not all of them do. That’s why it’s important to stay covered even inside Canada. Travel insurance is an affordable alternative to the costs you could incur if you experience a medical emergency.

If I have personal property stolen while I'm travelling, will my travel insurance policy cover it?

The simple answer is yes: your property is covered by your insurance policy, but only up to a certain dollar amount. Even within the same policy, coverage can vary depending on the item. For example, the amount of coverage that a policy extends to electronics might be different than the coverage you’ll get for sports equipment

Keep in mind that there are often specific items that insurance companies won’t cover. Make sure to check what these items are with your insurance provider.

If you didn’t get travel insurance and your items are stolen, it becomes more challenging, but not impossible, to get reimbursed. If your belongings were stolen at a hotel, and it can be proven that the hotel was at fault, the establishment will compensate you up to a certain amount. If items are missing from your checked-in luggage after a flight, most airlines will allow you to file a claim with them.

What types of travel insurance are available?

All inclusive travel insurance.

A comprehensive policy that offers emergency medical coverage plus insurance against logistical problems, like lost or stolen baggage, trip cancellations, and travel interruptions. Since all inclusive insurance has the most extensive coverage, premiums tend to be higher than for other travel policies.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

This insurance reimburses you for your flight and travel expenses if you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason. Some policies also pay benefits for food and lodging costs if your trip is interrupted or delayed. Those policies may even cover you if your tour operator suddenly files for bankruptcy.

Single trip insurance

Emergency medical coverage for one trip, which you can take any time within a 365-day period.

Multi-trip insurance

Emergency medical coverage for any number of trips taken within 1 year. Also known as annual travel insurance.

Top-up insurance

Purchased by travellers who already have insurance for a portion, but not for the entire duration, of their trip. Top-up insurance takes effect after the original coverage lapses.

After-departure insurance

Few insurance companies offer insurance that covers you when you’ve already left for vacation. Why? It raises a lot of red flags for risk-averse insurers whose priority is to guard against fraudulent claims — medical costs in foreign countries can be expensive. For your application to be accepted, you must not have seen a doctor since departing, you must not be showing symptoms of illness, and you must be covered under a provincial health insurance plan.

Travel Insurance FAQs

Is getting travel insurance a good idea.

Travel insurance helps protect against the unexpected. A primary incentive to get travel insurance can be for emergency medical assistance. Without these benefits, you can easily spend over $5,000+ out-of-pocket for treatment and transportation expenses if something were to happen when you were out of the country.

Travel insurance can cover disruptions to your trip that may end up costing you a small fortune such as delayed flights, or an emergency trip home. You could lose the money you've already paid for the trip, and would have the added costs of paying for new bookings that having insurance could help with. It is even highly recommended if you go across the border for the weekend or even one day.

What is not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance (typically) will not cover you if try to make a claim resulting from a sport or activity that isn't covered by your policy. This can apply to cover for injuries and illness (medical), as well as equipment loss/damage and any personal financial losses. Make sure you go over your policy especially if you plan on doing some excursions or other outdoor activities that you think the insurance coverage might be questionable on.

How do I choose travel insurance?

  • Never buy from a travel agent, tour operator or airline speak to a licensed insurance advisor - like us!
  • Decide on the cover you need before shopping around and we can help you determine what you need.
  • Be sensible about the excess.
  • Check what is already covered by your home insurance policy or bank.
  • Choose annual cover if you travel more than three times a year, as this is typically less expensive.

Do I need travel insurance when I travel within Canada, between provinces?

Yes, it is always recommended to get extra travel insurance. Provincial government health plans recommend additional travel insurance for out-of-province expenses they don't cover. You might be covered for some of the same services, but most likely not all of them . And, as a precaution, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Canadian provinces and territories have an agreement where the "host" province foots the bill for any necessary medical health care services and then gets reimbursed by the home province later - except in Quebec. But this doesn't mean you shouldn't get your own extra travel insurance, because depending on where you are, some services are simply not covered at all. Such services as: ambulance, hospital transfer, prescription drugs, transportation back to your home province and procedures not approved by your healthcare plan at home may not be covered. So, to be safe, it is recommended that you buy extra travel insurance even traveling within Canada because you just never know!

What factors can affect your travel insurance?

There are four important factors that can contribute to increasing your travel insurance premium. They include your age and health, the destination and length of your trip.

What does travel insurance typically cover?

Like home and auto insurance, every insurance policy is different and what's covered depends on the product and how much insurance you want to buy. Here is what medical services would typically be included:

  • Emergency hospital and medical costs
  • Ambulance and air ambulance costs
  • Outpatient services
  • Physician and laboratory costs
  • Prescription drugs
  • Direct payment to the hospitals, whenever possible
  • Assistance with bringing a family member to your bedside
  • Return of your vehicle if you are ill and have to come home

These additional benefits may be included, but its best to check with your provider first, otherwise, it could be extra and not included:

  • Trip cancellation for non-refundable monetary losses
  • Trip interruption/disruption
  • Baggage loss, rental car damage, out-of-pocket expenses
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Car rental insurance

How much coverage do I need?

Everyone is different and each policy is too, which is why it's important to know what you have coverage for. This will help you to avoid large expenses such as hospitalization and medical treatments needed outside of Canada. Here are some things you can check to see if your coverage includes, or has provisions for:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Medical evacuation
  • Repatriation in case of death
  • Adventurous and Extreme Activities: this is a tricky one as you may need to get more comprehensive coverage if you plan on taking part in high-risk activities while on your trip. Many policies don't cover "risky" activities such as skydiving, scuba diving, whitewater rafting, mountaineering or rodeo activities. It's best to check with your insurance provider if you plan to do any of these things.

So, it all depends on what you are traveling for and what you plan to do that would determine the amount of coverage you need. Talk to a Surex insurance advisor who can help you choose what is right for you and make you sleep easier at night knowing you are covered while away from home.

Where can I get travel insurance?

There are many different insurance providers and some are better for certain things, such as CAA being a good choice for families, or Blue Cross is good for seniors and retirees. You can generally go to your bank, CAA, Blue Cross or your credit card may offer travel insurance. Contact a Surex insurance advisor, we also offer travel insurance, so if you are already a client we can look into bundling it with your other services to save you more money.

You can buy travel insurance through your:

  • travel agent
  • insurance broker
  • employer’s insurance provider
  • credit card company

Is travel insurance on your credit card a good idea?

It's always a good idea to carry a credit card in your wallet for emergencies and most credit cards in Canada have some form of basic travel insurance coverage but it most likely won't be enough if anything were to happen. Different credit cards vary in what they cover, so you'd have to inquire about what they offer. It may only be for trip cancelation/disruption or lost luggage. That being said, it's best to get separate insurance for all your travel insurance needs (mostly coverage that includes medical because again, it's highly unlikely that your credit card has any sort of medical travel insurance coverage) and keep your credit card insurance as extra bonus. It's advised to not rely solely on your credit card to take care of all your travel insurance needs. Talk to a Surex dedicated insurance advisor who can get you the right coverage for your next trip!

Some credit cards, for example, only offer coverage when you pay for your trip on your card, or charge a certain percentage of trip expenses to the card for them to take action and consider a claim. Always read the fine print to be sure what you are getting before you leave on your trip.

How often should I check for travel advisories?

It is recommended that you check the trace advisories website at least twice - when you are planning your trip and just before you go. But, if you have booked a long way in advance, it is always good to check again in between for any changes! (for example, if you booked 12-months in advance check every few months as well). Your insurance company will not pay for any medical claims if the government has issued a travel advisory for your destination.

COVID-19 and travel insurance, what should I know?

If you have to travel abroad during the pandemic, it is best to check with your insurance provider to go over your coverage as many rules and regulations have changed to reflect the Covid-19 situation that we are facing right now. Things will continuously change and be edited, so make sure to stay current with the travel regulations on an ongoing basis while you travel during this time. Here are some items you can go over and check off your list:

  • Make sure you are covered for Covid-19 related medical expenses (as well as other non-covid-19 emergency-related expenses.
  • Trip interruptions
  • Find out if you are covered for the entire length of the trip, that there are no limitations after departure (could have extended costs)
  • Find out if you are covered for any quarantine costs if you happen to get infected with the virus while on your trip
  • Find out if you are covered for extended stays outside of Canada - if something were to happen and you couldn't leave at your original date

*And always be aware at this unstable time that there are limited flights should you need to return to Canada for medical care.

  • Travel insurance can cover injuries or illnesses while you’re traveling in Canada, as your domestic health insurance may not travel with you across the border.
  • The best travel insurance for Canada will also cover costs associated with trip cancellation, delay and interruption.
  • If you plan to travel with high-value items like a laptop, smartphone or camera, ensure the travel insurance you buy has enough per-item coverage for lost, damaged or stolen belongings.

Many U.S. travelers flock to our northern neighbor to take in Canada’s cultural experiences and stunning remote landscapes. While travel insurance isn’t a requirement to enter Canada, it may be worth purchasing for the benefits, like medical insurance, trip cancellation and baggage coverage.

“Even if Canada doesn’t feel too far from the U.S., being out of the country can be stressful, and any unexpected costs that get in your way, from lost baggage to getting sick or injured, can make any mishaps even more upsetting,” said Daniel Durazo, spokesperson for Allianz Global Assistance. “With the right travel insurance policy, you can ease your mind from unexpected travel scenarios or outrageous out-of-pocket bills.”

Here’s what you should consider when buying travel insurance for Canada.

Understanding travel insurance for Canada

Understanding Canada travel insurance can make choosing a policy easier. Compare plans to see which policies meet your travel needs. For example, some plans have exclusions for adventure activities, such as rock climbing without equipment, but may offer an adventure sports bundle as an upgrade.

There are also various limitations on medical coverages, trip delay, trip interruption and trip cancellation benefits that could make one policy better than another for your Canada trip.

It’s best to buy travel insurance soon after making your first trip deposit. This way you’re covered for a longer period, at no additional cost.

“Travel insurance policies typically only cover unknown and unforeseen situations, from unexpected injuries or illness to flight cancellations and weather-related events,” said Durazo. “If you wait until you have a problem, you likely won’t be covered.”

Buying travel insurance coverage within 14 days of your first trip deposit ensures you get the most benefits. Depending on the plan, buying early could also make you eligible for a pre-existing condition waiver. This means the insurance provider won’t look back at your medical records if you file a claim for a medical condition you already had before buying the policy.

But if you have a trip coming up soon, don’t worry — you can buy a travel insurance policy up to 24 hours before your departure date.

Key coverage considerations for travel insurance in Canada

The best travel insurance plans bundle together several types of insurance, from trip cancellation insurance to travel medical insurance. No matter what your plans are once you enter Canada, consider these key coverages when researching travel insurance to Canada.

Trip cancellation insurance

Sometimes, things happen that require you to cancel your trip. Maybe a family member was going to watch your kids while you’re gone, and they’re now too sick to take care of them. Or severe weather impacts the airline, grounding your flight for the days you planned to be in Canada.

Trip cancellation insurance will reimburse up to 100% of prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, like a flightseeing tour in the Yukon or a Johnston Canyon tour in Banff, if you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason. Other reasons you might have to cancel include family emergency, job loss, severe injury or sickness, terrorism or military deployment.

However, you can’t cancel for any reason — like a falling out with your travel companion — and get reimbursed, unless you upgrade your travel insurance plan to “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage. Although CFAR can add around 50% to your travel insurance costs, the ability to cancel for any reason and receive up to 75% of your nonrefundable expenses can make the extra expense worth it. Just make sure you cancel at least 48 hours before your departure date and time to get this benefit.

Delays in your Canada trip

If you’re headed to Canada during winter, severe weather could shut down the airport or cause flight delays. If you’re flying from Baltimore to Whistler with a connection in Chicago, but a winter storm causes delays in Baltimore, you might miss your connecting flight to Vancouver.

Most travel insurance plans will reimburse for meals and hotel accommodation expenses you incur from a travel delay. But to be eligible, the delay usually has to be at least six hours, with some policies requiring 12 consecutive hours before trip delay coverage kicks in. Seven Corners, for instance, will reimburse up to $250 per day per person to a maximum of $2,000 for a delay of at least six hours.

Trip insurance with delay benefits will also reimburse for prepaid expenses you miss out on because of a covered delay. So, if you miss out on your first two days at the ski lodge and can’t transfer or exchange prepaid snowboarding lessons, you can file a claim.

Tackling trip interruption

The last thing you’d expect while taking in the Halifax, Nova Scotia sites is to have a family emergency back home. If you get a call that your mom fell down the stairs and is in the hospital with a broken leg, you’ll probably be ready to catch the next flight home to be with her.

Luckily, travel insurance includes trip interruption benefits, which can help you get there without a large out-of-pocket expense. Trip interruption coverage will pay for your one-way ticket back home and cover any prepaid accommodations and tours you’ll miss from having to shorten your trip.

Dealing with lost bags and belongings

Travel insurance will also cover baggage loss and personal items that get damaged, stolen or lost while you’re traveling. So if you check your hiking poles and boots and they get damaged or lost during the flight, your travel insurance will reimburse you for the depreciated cost of those items.

You’ll also have coverage if someone steals your backpack while you’re sightseeing in Toronto. If you’re traveling with high-value items, make sure you have enough coverage. Many travel insurance plans have a $500 to $1,000 cap on certain items like cameras, watches and computers. Some policies also exclude coverage for smartphones.

Making plans for medical bills in Canada

Don’t be surprised if your health insurance provides little to no coverage in Canada or requires you to pay a large out-of-pocket deductible, said Carol Mueller, spokesperson for Berkshire Hathaway. Canada doesn’t accept Medicare from the U.S., and your health insurance won’t cover you unless you have global coverage. The Government of Canada will also not cover hospital and medical expenses for visitors, including American tourists.

Whether you’re planning to hit the slopes, go hiking or just take advantage of what the swanky resort you splurged on has to offer, you never know when you might fall ill or get hurt. This is where travel medical insurance can help.

Allianz’s OneTrip Prime single-trip plan will pay up to $50,000 for your medical expenses, such as X-rays, prescriptions, doctor’s visits or a hospital stay. Other plans, such as as some in our rating of the best travel insurance for seniors cover up to $500,000.

Even if you’re up-to-date on your COVID-19 vaccines, you might still want to consider a travel insurance plan that covers COVID-related medical treatment, like those in our rating of the best COVID-19 travel insurance .

Evacuation for serious medical issues

Travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is critical if you plan to travel to remote areas of Canada. The nearest trauma facility equipped to treat your medical emergency might be hundreds of miles away, requiring a medevac to get you there.

If you don’t have medical plan coverage, you could be on the hook for thousands of dollars in medical costs and private medical transportation. Travel insurance provides emergency medical evacuation coverage .

The Allianz OneTrip Prime and Berkshire Hathaway’s ExactCare travel plans will cover up to $500,000 for emergency medical transportation and repatriation of remains. Travel Guard and Seven Corners plans will each provide up to $1 million.

What is the cost of Canada travel insurance?

There are several factors insurers use to determine the cost of a travel insurance policy , including age, trip cost, destination and length of the trip. In general, you can expect travel insurance to cost about 5% to 6% of your total trip cost.

When calculating the trip expenses to insure, only include those that are nonrefundable. If your prepaid, nonrefundable flights, accommodations and tours total $5,000, you can expect to pay around $275 for travel insurance. You may pay more if you choose a plan with higher coverage limits and upgrades.

Companies use different criteria and weigh factors differently than other providers, so comparing travel insurance policy quotes can help you find the most comprehensive plan for the best price. You can use travel insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth to compare coverage limits and add-on coverage such as rental car, “cancel for any reason” and adventure sports.

Key benefits of having travel insurance for your Canada trip

Even though you’re not flying across an ocean, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy a travel insurance plan. Some of the key benefits of having travel insurance for your Canada trip include:

  • Not stressing or worrying about not having government health insurance plan coverage since you’re not a Canadian resident.
  • Not losing out on your nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs if something unforeseen occurs and you have to cancel your trip or head home early.
  • Knowing that if your trip is delayed or canceled, or you lose a bag or get something stolen, you have coverage to recoup at least some of your out-of-pocket costs.

The right travel plan can provide peace of mind, and many policies will pay for themselves if you need to make a claim for a covered reason.

Tips for choosing the best travel insurance provider for your Canada trip

Comparing travel insurance companies can help you make the right choice when choosing a travel insurance product. Check customer reviews and complaints on websites like Trustpilot. Travel insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth and InsureMyTrip can also help you identify the best travel insurance company and most generous policy.

Don’t be afraid to call an insurance company to ask them “what if?” questions to ensure you’re getting the right policy. “You should feel confident in the coverage you purchase and trust you will receive the level of claims service you deserve if you need to file a claim,” said Mueller.

You should always read the fine print to know your policy’s limitations and exclusions. This includes restrictions on trip delay, cancellation and interruption benefits, and understanding what you’ll need to file a claim for baggage damage, loss, or medical care.

Tip: Most travel insurance companies offer a 10 to 15 free look period, which allows you to review the policy and cancel it for a full refund if you decide it’s not the best choice.

Other insurance considerations for Canada

If you’re planning to participate in adventure activities, like dogsledding in the Yukon, kayaking the Johnstone Strait to see orcas or surfing and hiking in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, you want to make sure you’re covered.

World Nomads Explorer travel insurance plan covers more than 200 adventure activities. You can also get extreme sports coverage, license fees and equipment delay coverage with Berkshire Hathaway’s AdrenalineCare travel plan. Travel Guard offers an Adventure Sports Bundle optional upgrade, which waives benefit exclusions for adventure and extreme activities.

We mentioned CFAR coverage above, but some policies also offer optional “interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage. It works like CFAR, allowing you to end your trip early for any reason, not just those listed in your policy. Seven Corners offers a CFAR and IFAR upgrade for up to 75% of nonrefundable trip costs as long as you purchase it within 20 days of your first trip payment.

Road trips are also a popular way to see Canada’s beauty. If you plan to rent a car, it may be worth getting rental vehicle coverage if your credit card doesn’t offer it. World Nomads will cover up to $35,000 in collision damage waiver, while Travel Guard’s rental vehicle damage coverage will pay up to $50,000 in damage to your rental vehicle. Note that this coverage does not include liability insurance , if you are at fault for an accident that results in injuries or damage to others’ property. Check with your car insurance company to make sure your U.S. auto insurance coverage extends to driving in Canada.

How Travel Insurance for Seniors Works

Senior travel insurance is a type of travel insurance plan made for older individuals (typically 65 years old and above) with unique insurance coverage requirements. These plans work like standard insurance plans, helping pay for emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, medical evacuation (if needed), and trip cancellations or interruptions while travelling.

In most situations, you file a claim for covered financial losses online or through phone and submit proof of your loss to your insurer. After your provider verifies your claim, it will reimburse you for your covered losses. You can get reimbursement through direct deposit, debit card, or a cheque.

The cost of travel insurance for seniors in Canada depends on different factors. Insurers use these factors to determine the risk posed by a travelling senior.

  • Age . The older the individual, the more expensive the premium. This is because older people pose a higher risk to insurers.
  • Health status . A pre-existing condition means added risk, resulting in a higher insurance rate.
  • Destination . Places with higher risk call for higher premiums due to potential incidents resulting from crime and illness.
  • Trip duration . Longer trips have a higher potential for emergencies, so insurers require a higher rate.
  • Coverage limits . All-inclusive insurance plans are more expensive and necessitate additional costs.
  • Trip cost . More expensive trips have higher premiums due to the possibility of trip cancellations and interruptions.

It is best to obtain a travel insurance quote to get a good estimate of your insurance costs for a planned trip.

How to Get a Travel Insurance Quote

Choose a travel insurance provider and visit their website. Find the “Get a Quote” button and click it to load the application form. Fill out the required fields. With most providers, there is an option to apply and buy insurance online.

To get multiple quotes, visit a comparison website for financial products. Answer basic questions about your trip to obtain quotes from different providers. Perform a comparison of travel insurance plans for seniors. Choose a suitable policy and connect with your selected insurer to secure your rate.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It for Seniors?

If you are a travelling senior, you can be at risk for unexpected medical expenses and travel issues like trip cancellations and interruptions or even lost or delayed baggage. Travel insurance will safeguard you from these emergencies and save you thousands of dollars and a lot of hassle stemming from various travel-related incidents.

Since older travellers have very specific needs, it is essential to have protection when in another place or country. Given their advanced age, seniors are more likely to fall ill or become injured when travelling far away from home. So, they stand to benefit the most from having adequate insurance coverage.

The Government of Canada recommends that travellers purchase insurance in addition to provincial health insurance plans to ensure appropriate protection, especially when travelling to another country. Travel insurance from a trusted provider is a small price to pay compared to the potentially hefty medical bills common in other countries.

The key is to find good travel insurance for Canadian seniors with pre-existing medical conditions that includes coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions and lost or delayed baggage.

You can also look at credit cards that include travel insurance for seniors over 65.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get travel insurance if you are over 70 .

Travel medical insurance for seniors over 65 can still be secured, but it may come with higher premiums or certain restrictions. This is due to factors like pre-existing conditions and increased health risks. The more expensive coverage is to mitigate the said factors.

What is the maximum age for travel insurance in Canada?

There is no age limit for travel insurance coverage in Canada. Senior travellers over 85 can still obtain travel insurance, but their policies will cost more. Coverage choices may be fewer due to seniors being at high risk for filing claims.

What is the best international travel insurance for seniors?

The best international senior travel insurance provides diverse health coverage while considering pre-existing conditions. It should ideally include coverage for medical emergencies and evacuation or repatriation, protection for lost baggage, trip cancellations or interruptions, and 24/7 emergency assistance.

Should you get travel insurance for Canada?

The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) recommends getting medical insurance even when travelling within Canada. Not all medical expenses are covered by Government Health Insurance Plans. These include ambulance services, medical supplies, prescription drugs, and dental emergencies.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Canada

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Canada. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Canada can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Canada’s best credit cards for travel insurance

By Keph Senett on April 12, 2024 Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

If you’re planning to travel this summer, you’ll need travel insurance if you plan to go out of province. These days, many of the credit cards available include some kind of travel insurance. While that’s a great selling feature for these cards, savvy Canadians know that not all insurance is created equal. There are a few kinds of coverage you actually  need  when travelling, like emergency medical and trip cancellation or interruption. Theft or baggage loss protection is a useful bonus, too.

As to which  travel credit card  offers the right combination of features for you, that will depend largely on the type of traveller you are and the perks you’re most likely to use. But first…

Travel insurance on credit cards: How does it work?

Every insurance package is tailored to a specific card and program but in general, the process is simple. You’ll usually have to book your travel on that credit card but different cards have different rules. For example, some say you need to book 100% of your trip on the card while others don’t have that stipulation. Read your documents to determine your responsibilities. Once you book, you’ll automatically have access to the included coverage. You don’t have to notify the credit card company that you’re traveling or call to activate the coverage. That said, we always recommend that you read the documentation from your credit card company.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance protects you from unexpected costs for things like medical care in a foreign country or for rebooking a flight home because the airline cancelled your return flight. TravelStar Emergency Medical Insurance covers you in case you need emergency medical care during your trip. Trip Cancellation Coverage insures you for costs or new expenses you might have if your trip is cancelled or interrupted.

What does travel insurance cover?

Our TravelStar Emergency Medical covers essential benefits like ambulance, emergency dental, hospital care and more while travelling. TravelStar Trip Cancellation Coverage helps you feel protected even before you start your trip. In the event your trip is cancelled due to an insured risk before your departure, you'll be covered for items such as non-refundable airfare, pre-paid travel arrangements and any cancellation penalties. In the event your trip is interrupted after leaving, you'll be covered for items like transportation to rejoin tour groups or the cost of out-of-pocket expenses during longer delays such as meals, accommodations, telephone calls and taxi fares.

Why do I need travel insurance?

Nobody expects to have an emergency when travelling but emergencies happen. The costs of medical care in another country can often be thousands of dollars. So can the cost to rebook a last-minute flight home. Having an emergency on your trip should not cause you financial hardship for years to come. TravelStar Emergency Medical Insurance covers you in case you need emergency medical care during your trip and Trip Cancellation Coverage can help cover costs if your trip is cancelled or interrupted.

Do you need travel insurance when travelling within Canada?

It’s a good idea. Provincial health plans only cover basic costs like trips to the hospital or a doctor. You can also buy Trip Cancellation insurance to help cover costs if your trip is cancelled or interrupted.

How does travel insurance work?

You purchase coverage before leaving home and if you run into an emergency while travelling, you’ll be reimbursed for covered expenses. What do you do if you run into an emergency while travelling? First, call Travel Assistance for help. They’ll make sure you know what’s covered so when you pay for it, you know you’ll be reimbursed shortly after you submit your claim. Please see our TravelStar Emergency Medical and Trip Cancellation pages for specifics on what’s covered.

BOSTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / May 2, 2024 / International Citizens Insurance, a leading international insurance broker, has announced the best travel insurance plans for 2024 summer travel. As the cost of airfare and hotels continues to rise along with the increase in flight delays and cruise cancellations, this list could not have come at a better time for travelers looking to protect their travel plans and their finances.

"This summer's travel season promises a high level of demand, increasing costs, and a strong potential for travel disruptions due to political unrest, weather, and other factors," said Joe Cronin, President of International Citizens Insurance. "Our clients want travel insurance they can trust to help them if they suffer a cancellation, a medical emergency, lost luggage, a natural disaster, or have to change plans due to unforeseen events. With this list, they will be able to find the best overall travel insurers as well as the right plans for their individual needs."

International Citizens Insurance judged each company and plan on six key criteria: the user-friendliness of their site, the ease of policy purchase, the number of countries plans are offered in, how extensive the benefits are, the ease of making a claim and the quality of the company's customer service. The most trusted insurers include WorldTrips , who made history as one of the first insurers to offer plans for purchase over the internet; GeoBlue Travel Insurance , which supports seniors with coverage for people up to 84 years old; and Trawick International, which offers coverage for over 500 adventure sports activities.

To help customers find the best insurance for their specific needs, International Citizens Insurance has also identified the best insurance for several use cases, including Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance, travel medical plans, and insurance with coverage for pets. International Citizens Insurance has also identified the best plans for clients with special needs, including seniors, missionaries and volunteers, U.S. citizens abroad, and digital nomads.

In today's unpredictable world, travel insurance has become the most essential accessory for any international traveler. Five affordable Canadian places worth exploring this summer

With the cost of travel skyrocketing over the past few years because of inflation, more people are choosing to vacation closer to home. But even travelling domestically can still be expensive in Canada, where a return ticket across the country can cost $600 to $800, not to mention springing for a rental car when you land.

If you’re willing to skip the flight and drive your own vehicle, some cities and regions are cheaper than others. The five destinations below are rich in experiences that don’t require spending a fortune.

For an outdoors adventure: Charlevoix, Que.

Glamping has taken off with domes and yurts in Charlevoix, Que. Handout

Glamping – camping with luxury accommodations and facilities – has taken off with domes and yurts in this region, an hour’s drive from Quebec City.

A five-kilometre-wide meteorite crashed here 400 million years ago, forming rolling mountains in a landscape that also includes fjords and numerous bays. Today, you can hike, bike, swim and kayak at popular spots such as Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie and Parc national des Grands-Jardins. (Make your way to the Observatoire de l’Astroblème de Charlevoix to learn about the region’s history.)

To keep your energy up, indulge in local delicacies directly from farmers, cheesemongers, distillers and more on the Flavour Trail , a self-guided tour. Or explore artisan shops and boulangeries as you take in 360-degree landscapes at L’Isle-aux-Coudres, a 23-kilometre island in the Charlevoix basin that can only be reached by a free ferry.

How to stay within budget: Domaine à ciel ouvert (DACO) offers cabins starting at $130 a night, but you can also tent camp for as little as $40. Some travellers will splurge for one or two nights on luxury accommodations while camping for the rest of their time to keep costs down. Cooking your own meals with food from regional producers can save you a fair amount too.

For the culture: Surrey, B.C.

Surrey was the only Canadian destination recently featured in Food & Wine magazine as one of the next great food cities in the world. Handout

Don’t sleep on Vancouver’s suburban neighbour. British Columbia’s second-largest city by population offers the perfect mix of urban and nature, with incredible culinary experiences: It was the only Canadian destination recently featured in Food & Wine magazine as one of the next great food cities in the world. Start your flavourful journey by checking out Surrey’s Spice Trail , which highlights foods available at restaurants and grocery stores from Colombia, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Nepal, West Africa, Mexico and more.

For even more of an up-close look at the local community, head to the Clayton Market , a biweekly pop-up (May to October), or take a fun, free and educational train ride on a restored heritage car with the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Adventure. If you time your visit right you can also catch some summer festivals. In July, there is FVDED In The Park , Western Canada’s largest all-ages electronic dance festival ($29.99), and the free Fusion Festival, which celebrates cultures from around the world.

How to stay within budget: Many hotels in Surrey, such as Best Western, Ramada and Comfort Inn & Suites, cost $200 or less a night and offer free breakfast and a kitchenette. Short-term rentals on Airbnb and Vrbo can be even cheaper. Sticking to free attractions such as the Museum of Surrey, the Historic Stewart Farm and the Surrey Nature Centre will ensure you keep costs down.

For fun with fewer crowds: Edmonton

free travel insurance canada

Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton. Handout

This must-go destination in Alberta offers a city trip with lower costs.

A good starting point is Fort Edmonton Park , which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. There, live actors and recreated historical buildings allow visitors to immerse themselves in history, from First Nations to fur trading . The Alberta Legislature, a stunning example of beaux arts architecture that sits on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River, offers free guided tours if you register in advance. The Art Gallery of Alberta is always free for those under the age of 18, or for all visitors from 4 to 7 p.m. on the last Thursday of every month. And the University of Alberta Observatory has free viewings on Thursdays.

Festivals are serious business in the city and most are free to attend. For fire-eaters, magicians, musicians and more, head to the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival , which runs July 5 to 14. Many of the performances are interactive and great for kids. From Aug. 15 to 25, the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival puts on more than 200 shows at dozens of locations.

How to stay within budget: Edmonton has some great hotels that cost around $200 a night. Downtown, try the Matrix Hotel; in the historic district of Old Strathcona, the Metterra Hotel is a hidden gem. The city has great public transportation, so you don’t need a car. That said, you can rent electric scooters for two hours for $35. This is a great way to get the lay of the land quickly and dip down into the River Valley.

For wine and waves: Annapolis Valley, N.S.

free travel insurance canada

Fort Anne National Historic Site in the town of Annapolis, N.S. Wally Hayes/Handout

About an hour north of Halifax, this region is famous for its tides, wine industry, whale watching and seafood.

Your first stop should be Burntcoat Head Park : Arrive during low tide to walk the ocean floor. Then, if you stick around for a few hours (pass the time with a picnic, walking trails or interactive exhibits) you’ll be able to watch 40 to 50 feet of water – the highest tides in the world – roll in. Another option: Cape Split, ideal for a worthwhile hike with epic coastline views.

Throughout the region you’ll find historic sites that shouldn’t be missed. The Fort Anne National Historic Site was once a centre of European colonization and an important gathering place for the Mi’kmaq people. For a recreation of early colonial settlements, head across the bay to the Port Royal National Historic Site . The Annapolis Valley Macdonald Museum is also worth a stop to see a collection of more than 150 antique clocks and watches, some dating back to the late 17th century.

Wine drinkers will be spoiled for choice with more than a dozen vineyards in the valley. Many wineries, including Luckett, Grand Pré, Benjamin Bridge and Planters Ridge, offer tastings from $12 to $40 in picturesque surroundings.

How to stay within budget: Stay at a vacation home or bed and breakfast. In downtown Kentville , you’ll find the Yellow House on the Hill , which has rooms starting at $115 a night. The town is small, diverse and energetic, making it an ideal place to stay and meet locals. While there, check out the Kings County Museum and Tides Contemporary Art Gallery; both have free entry.

For walkable history: Kingston

free travel insurance canada

Guards at Fort Henry, Kingston. Dwayne Brown Studio/Handout

Though it often flies under the radar for travellers, this city is for people of all ages – with historic sites, dozens of museums and memorable shopping experiences.

A stroll through the Princess Street Promenade and Springer Market Square will give you a quick feel for what the historic downtown is all about: small artisan shops, quaint vibes and community events. Visiting during one of the Doors Open Kingston & Area events (July 20, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28) can be well worth your while for a behind-the-scenes look at Kingston City Hall, Babcock Mill, the Perth Museum and several other sites. The city’s arts and culture scene is surprisingly vast, and visitors can learn about it through self-guided tours that explore film, literary and musical landmarks, including ones connected to the Tragically Hip.

How to stay within budget: Kingston is easily accessible by Via Rail from Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal. Once there, the city is easy to get around by foot, bus or the Kingston Trolley. The latter is part of the K-Pass ($109 to $159), which is a great way to reduce costs. It includes admission to some of the top attractions, such as Fort Henry, the Great Lakes Marine Museum, 1,000 Islands cruises and the Kingston Penitentiary. For more savings, Visit Kingston offers various getaway packages that feature accommodations, entertainment, spa treatments and meals.

A new car is a big purchase, and many drivers end up making auto loan or lease payments for years. But a new car’s value can drop significantly, especially within the first year. If your new car is totaled in an accident, a full coverage car insurance policy will only cover up to the vehicle’s current market value. So how do you pay off your auto loan if you still owe more than what your car insurance will cover?

Unfortunately, you’re still on the hook for the difference between a car’s value and the amount you owe on it — unless you have gap insurance.

What is gap insurance?

Gap insurance, or guaranteed asset protection, is an optional coverage that pays the difference between what your vehicle is worth and how much you owe on your car at the time it’s stolen or totaled. This coverage supplements a comprehensive or collision car insurance payout, which can only be as high as your car’s value.

You’re responsible for paying off your car loan if your car is totaled or stolen, even if your insurance won’t cover the full amount you still owe. This is where gap insurance can come in handy.

But to be clear: If you don’t have a car loan or a lease, you don’t need gap insurance.

What does gap insurance cover?

Gap insurance covers what’s owed on a car after a total loss, whether that’s the result of an accident or vehicle theft. Gap insurance pays out after comprehensive and collision coverage, two coverage types that are typically required when you buy or lease a new vehicle. (They pay for damage to your car after things like accidents, fire or vehicle theft.)

However, comprehensive and collision insurance pay only what a car is worth at the time of a theft or accident. So when you owe more on your car loan or lease than that, gap insurance covers that amount.

In most cases, gap insurance doesn't cover your comprehensive or collision deductible. Your deductible is the amount your insurance subtracts from a claim payout.

How does gap insurance work?

Let’s say someone stole your new car, and at the time it was worth $25,000. Unfortunately, you still owe $30,000 on the car. You have comprehensive insurance, which will pay for the value of your car at the time of theft. You’re responsible for your $500 insurance deductible , and then the insurance company pays $24,500 to your lender — but there’s still $5,500 due on your loan.

Gap insurance is designed to pay that final $5,500 so you don’t owe money on a totaled car. But without gap insurance, you’ll have to cover the balance on your loan as well as your insurance deductible.

Here is a visual of that example:

» MORE: What does car insurance cover?

Is gap insurance worth it?

You don’t need gap insurance unless you lease a vehicle or have a loan. You also don’t need it if your loan is paid down below the value of your car.

But if you do have a lease or loan, you may want to think about whether you can afford to pay the difference between the amount you still owe and the value of your car. If you couldn’t make that payment, or don’t want to deal with that financial stress in an emergency, then you’d probably benefit from having gap coverage.

Drop gap coverage when your car loan is less than the current value of your car. Online pricing guides like Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book can give you an idea of how much your car is worth. Insurers might not drop it automatically, so you may need to remove it.

How to get gap insurance

You can generally only add gap insurance to your policy if you still owe money on the vehicle or lease. Although insurers’ guidelines vary, a company may require one or both of the following:

Your car is no more than two to three years old.

You are the original owner of the vehicle.

There are two main ways to buy gap insurance:

From your auto insurer, as part of your regular insurance policy.

Through the dealership or lender, rolled into your loan payments. With this arrangement, you’re paying interest on the cost of your gap insurance over the life of the loan, making the coverage far more expensive.

If you buy through your dealership or lender:

Check your auto loan contract to see if you’re required to have gap insurance — not all lenders require it. However, your lender will generally require you to buy comprehensive and collision coverage.

A dealer may automatically include gap insurance if you lease your car, so make sure to check your lease agreement.

If you already bought gap insurance from your dealer and want to buy it from your insurer, you may be able to remove it from your car loan contract. Make sure you have coverage during the transition if you switch providers.

NerdWallet recommends buying gap coverage through your auto insurer rather than from a dealership to avoid paying interest on it. Not all car insurance companies provide gap coverage (or an equivalent) or offer it in all states, so if you decide you want this type of insurance, you may need to switch companies .

Which insurance companies sell gap coverage?

Some of the largest insurance companies that offer stand-alone gap insurance (or an equivalent) as add-ons to car insurance policies are:

American Family.

Auto-Owners.

Liberty Mutual.

Nationwide.

How much does gap insurance cost.

Auto insurers typically charge a few dollars a month for gap insurance or around $20 a year, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Your cost depends on individual factors, like your car’s value. You’ll also need to buy comprehensive and collision coverage. To find the best company for you, compare car insurance rates with at least three insurers.

Lenders charge a flat fee of around $500 to $700 for gap insurance, according to United Policyholders, a nonprofit consumer group. But if you add the coverage to your loan, you’ll also pay interest on it. That means you could pay more than that $500 to $700 for three years of gap coverage from a dealer, compared with around $60 from your auto insurer for that same timeframe.

Prices and interest rates will vary, so always check with your dealer and car insurance company to accurately compare costs.

Alternatives to gap insurance

Gap insurance isn’t the only way to protect yourself if your car is stolen or totaled. Depending on your needs, you may want to add one of these coverage options instead of gap insurance:

New-car replacement insurance : If you’re more worried about buying a new vehicle than paying off your old one, new-car replacement coverage might be a better choice for you. While it is more expensive than gap insurance, this coverage helps pay for a new car of the same make and model, minus your deductible, to replace your vehicle with a new one.

Better-car replacement coverage: If your vehicle is declared a total loss, this type of coverage will give you money for a model that is newer and has less mileage.
