15 Best Weekend Getaways In Tennessee—From The Mississippi River To The Smoky Mountains

Enjoy a weekend getaway in the Volunteer State.

fun weekend trips tennessee

Whitney Williams / Jonesborough Tourism Department

Measuring roughly 440 miles in length from west to east, Tennessee encompasses diverse geography and culture. If you’ve seen the state’s flag, you may have wondered why it has three stars. Each represents one of the state’s grand divisions: West, Middle, and East. With unique landscapes, history, and activities, the three regions each hold special opportunities for weekend getaways in Tennessee.

Beginning in the west, the state borders the Mississippi River . The land that stretches inland from Memphis is part of the Gulf Coastal Plain. It includes flat stretches of fertile soil that gradually evolve into low rolling hills and wide stream valleys. Crossing over the Tennessee River, Middle Tennessee brings the Highland Rim and Nashville Basin, with level plains, undulating hills, and fertile farmland, before shifting into the Cumberland Plateau—characterized by flat-topped tablelands, crooked stream valleys, rocky cliffs, and plentiful waterfalls. You meet the Tennessee River once again traveling into East Tennessee, where the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains are the defining feature of the state’s eastern border.

If you’re looking to get a taste of the numerous styles and scenery that Tennessee has to offer, we’ve got you covered with this list of weekend getaways. We’ll start with towns in West Tennessee—where the state’s lowest point stands in the Mississippi River at just 178 feet above sea level—travel through Middle Tennessee, and end with overnights in East Tennessee , where the highest point is Clingmans Dome at 6,643 feet in Great Smoky Mountains National Park .

Collierville, Tennessee

TENNESSEE TOURISM

With its entire downtown area listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Collierville offers a charming weekend getaway just 30 minutes outside Memphis. Spend your afternoon exploring specialty boutiques around Collierville Town Square—a spot literally out of a Hallmark movie, having been the filming site for “Wedding at Graceland” in 2019. The Little Shop by the Tower is your go-to for regionally made art and souvenirs. For supper, pop into local favorite Raven & Lily Restaurant for Southern-inspired upscale dining.

Paris, Tennessee

While not the Paris you’ve likely heard about, this small northwest Tennessee town still boasts a 70-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower —a perfect photo op for your weekend getaway. Plan your visit in late April to partake in the city’s annual World’s Biggest Fish Fry , where more than 12,500 pounds of catfish and all the fixins are served. Opt to camp at Paris Landing State Park to enjoy water sports and outdoor recreation alongside the 160,000-acre Kentucky Lake.

Savannah, Tennessee

Located on the shores of the Tennessee River in the southwest portion of the state, Savannah is a perfect weekend getaway for appreciating the history and beauty of the river. Start at the Tennessee River Museum for educational and interactive exhibits detailing the unique history of the Tennessee River Valley from prehistoric life through post-war reconciliation. Then head to the Walker Branch State Natural Area to enjoy 520 acres of bald cypress, mature tupelo gum, and other diverse forest types in the Tennessee River’s floodplain.

Granville, Tennessee

Operated by 200 volunteers and, as the town describes, “punctuated by front porches,” this little Tennessee gem offers a weekend away on the banks of the Cumberland River. A town tour ticket ($7 for adults) gives you access to a range of quirky and historic buildings and museums, such as the Antique Car Museum , Granville Whiskey Decanter Museum (hosting the world’s largest collection of whiskey decanters), and the Mayberry and I Love Lucy Museum . Book your stay at Granville Bed & Breakfast to stay in the heart of the town. Plan your visit around one of Granville’s many annual events, such as Steamboat Days, the Scarecrow Festival, or the Cornbread and Moonshine Festival.

Franklin, Tennessee

AMY ALLMAND | VISIT FRANKLIN

About a 30-minute drive south from Nashville, you’ll find yourself in Franklin , a perfect blend of modern amenities, scenic countryside, and historic streetscapes. Drive a section of the Natchez Trace Parkway as it winds its way from Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi . Stop in Gray’s on Main in the evening for Southern fare, craft cocktails, and live music. If you’re looking for a memorable place to rest your head, try Southall Farm & Inn , a 325-acre luxury spa resort, wellness retreat, and working farm with 62 guest rooms and 16 cottages.

Lynchburg, Tennessee

TENNESSEE TOURISM/KATIE KAUSS

For a unique stay, book a night at the Chattanooga Choo Choo , a 24-acre hotel and vacation complex in the heart of the city, where you can opt to sleep in an authentic railcar room .

Ducktown, Tennessee

If you’re looking to get away from it all, head to Ducktown in the southeast corner of the state. This tiny town is surrounded by natural beauty, including the Ocoee River. Schedule a whitewater rafting trip with Wildwater Ltd. for some weekend thrills. Learn about the town’s copper mining history at the Ducktown Basin Museum . Book a stay at The Company House Bed & Breakfast Inn to unwind after your day.

Sevierville, Tennessee

The hometown of American sweetheart Dolly Parton, Sevierville offers Smoky Mountain magic with a more local vibe when compared to its neighbors, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg . The city recently completed a $7.5 million streetscape project as part of an effort to renovate its historic downtown. Make your way there to take your picture with the Wings of Wander mural, painted to celebrate the monarch migration through the Smokies. Enjoy duckpin bowling and retro arcade games at The Pines , the newly restored theater where Dolly played her first paid gig. Dine at The Appalachian for a delicious meal fueled by regional flavors before resting your head at the Historic Central Hotel —all within walking distance of each other.

Knoxville, Tennessee

With vibrant music, art, outdoor, and culinary scenes , Knoxville is guaranteed to offer endless opportunities for weekend fun. Head to Ijams Nature Center , a more than 315-acre urban park along the Tennessee River where you can kayak in Mead’s Quarry Lake, embark on a high ropes course, or attend a naturalist program. Stop by the Sunsphere , built for the 1982 World’s Fair, for panoramic views of the city. Get some shopping done downtown at local businesses like Union Ave Books , Rala , and Earth to Old City . Stop by the Little Congress Bicycle Museum for a quirky, hole-in-the-wall homage to pedal power, as well as the Cumberland Gap Artists' Co-Op for a celebration of Appalachian crafts. Book your stay at The Olde Mill Inn Bed and Breakfast , which includes unique rooms like an authentic 1700s log cabin and a king-sized custom millwork masterpiece.

Bristol, Tennessee

If you’re looking for a weekend full of music and fishing, then look no further than Bristol. Visit in September to attend the city’s annual Rhythm & Roots Festival or come year-round to check out the Birthplace of Country Music Museum . Book your stay at the South Holston River Lodge for an all-inclusive experience with professionally guided fly fishing excursions, luxury riverside accommodations, delicious food, and more. You can also find guide services and outfitting a half-mile from the Weir Dam at South Holston River Fly Shop . At the end of the day, grab dinner at Bistro on 6th and then take a quick stroll across the state line into Virginia for dessert at Blackbird Bakery .

Weekend Getaways in Tennessee

While the cities of Memphis and Nashville are undoubtedly popular destinations in this part of the US, there are a number of other locations across Tennessee that should be on your radar. Lesser known destinations such as Franklin or Fall Creek Falls State Park are equally attractive and should be considered for a weekend getaway, but we hope that you are inspired by any or all of the following spots that are ideal spots to spend 48 hours enjoying the inherent beauty of Tennessee.

Let’s take a look at which locations across Tennessee are on our list of recommendations. We would also like to thank our awesome contributors who are local experts and residents of Tennessee for sharing insider knowledge as to their chosen destinations.

When you think about a Tennessee stereotype, it’s possible that the likes of Elvis Presley, BBQ and an eclectic music scene will frequently be at the top of many lists. All of these are associated with the city of Memphis, located on the western side of the state on the banks of the iconic Mississippi River.

Whether you are intrigued by taking a tour around Graceland to learn more about Elvis’ heritage and lifestyle, or perhaps you want to head downtown to visit Sun Studio, frequently recognized as the “birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll”, Memphis has an abundance of attractions that you can add to an action-packed weekend getaway.

graceland

Why not start in the downtown area to experience the heart and soul of Memphis along Beale Street, one of the most iconic downtown streets not only in this part of the south but across the US, before venturing to Sun Studio to learn how Elvis and many other iconic artists kickstarted their careers here.

For those that enjoy the arts and culture of a city, there are ample examples of street art highlighting the creative nature of the city, while the “foodies” visiting the city will likely want to sample stereotypical BBQ from restaurants such Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous, Central BBQ or Neely’s Interstate BBQ.

beale street memphis

Take a stroll along the banks of the Mississippi to admire the iconic Pyramid structure that has been transformed into perhaps the most unique Bass Pro Shops outdoor and adventure store. For those that want to experience a little retail therapy, the Germantown area of the city is one of the most popular among locals and visitors alike with the Wolfchase Galleria and Saddle Creek Malls offering plenty of high profile stores to fit all fashion styles.

Stereotypically known as the home of country music, Nashville offers visitors the opportunity to experience an eclectic blend of attractions that has made this such a popular city among travelers from all corners of the globe.

nashville skyline

Whether you are intrigued by the prospect of learning all about country music at the iconic Ryman Auditorium, Grand Ole Opry or the Country Music Hall of Fame , or perhaps you want to visit the one true replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, Nashville will have something that will likely spark your interest.

centennial park nashville

Walk downtown Nashville along Broadway to experience the true “honky tonk” bar scene, before heading across the Cumberland River to take in the Batman building along with other iconic buildings with a spectacular Nashville skyline. broadway nashville

Ready to experience the history and heritage of Nashville? Head over to Belle Meade Plantation to enjoy a guided tour of this Greek-Revival landmark that is infamous for being home to stables that have a collection of thoroughbred horses that went on to win some of the most iconic horse races in the world.

Exploring the collection of vibrant neighborhoods in Nashville , such as the Gulch, 12South, or Hillsboro Village, offers visitors the opportunity to explore what locals enjoy, with restaurants, local boutique stores, coffee shops and more on offer in all of these.

Chattanooga, located in the southeastern part of the state, has a wide range of activities to keep anyone busy such as hiking, delicious restaurants, and unique attractions. Visit the Tennessee Aquarium to see over 10,000 marine animals and pet a stingray. Check out penguins, sharks, seahorses, and more here.

Take an elevator 260 feet into the earth to make your way to Ruby Falls, the deepest and highest waterfall located underground in the nation. This waterfall plunges 145 feet in Lookout Mountain, another tourist destination in which you can see 7 states on a clear day.

While in the area don’t forget to check out the funicular railway that takes you to the top of Lookout Mountain. The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is the steepest passenger railway in the world and provides beautiful views along its one mile trip.

Chattanooga

History buffs will enjoy a trip to Sunset Rock, which is located in part of the oldest and largest Civil War national park. The panoramic view overlooking Chattanooga is breathtaking. Chattanooga has plenty of outdoor activities such as nearby hiking trails, waterfalls, and rock climbing areas. The riverwalk is a happening place with biking facilities and summer concerts. The Chattanooga Zoo is a fun place for families to spend an afternoon.

Chattanooga

Eat at the City Cafe Diner. There’s something for everyone and the dessert menu is extravagant and delicious. Don’t miss Clumpies for its hand made ice cream. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this hotel allows you to stay in a modified Pullman train car.

Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, family time, or for some adventure, Chattanooga is the place to be.

Thanks to Becci Edington from Tattling Tourist for sharing her thoughts on why Chattanooga is the perfect Tennessee weekend getaway destination.

Recognized as the “Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park,” the mountain town of Gatlinburg offers an abundance of attractions for visitors who are exploring the area or simply using it as a base to enjoy the inherent natural beauty of the Smoky Mountains.

The iconic Space Needle observation tower stands at over 400 feet, providing epic panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains and surrounding communities. The Sky Lift will transport visitors to Ober Gatlinburg, frequently recognized for its popular amusement park and ski resort. One of the newer additions to Gatlinburg’s eclectic collection of attractions is the SkyBridge that stands 1,800 feet above sea level and is the longest pedestrian cable bridge in North America.

For those looking for a little less adventure, head downtown Gatlinburg to sample one of the many moonshine bars before taking a couple of jars as lasting memories. Whether you are enticed into one of the Ripley’s attractions (Aquarium, Believe It or Not! Museum, Haunted Adventure among others), there are ample reasons to justify spending a couple of days in this part of Tennessee.

The nearby Great Smoky Mountains are perhaps the main reason for visiting this part of the state. A drive through the iconic Cades Cove Loop will likely offer plenty of wildlife sightings, while there are plenty of hikes that offer breathtaking scenery and waterfall adventures.

While the nearby city of Nashville deservedly attracts visitors from all corners of the globe, there is a smaller community that is equally deserving yet frequently lies in the shadow of the nearby metropolis. The city of Franklin lies 20 miles south of Nashville and is a popular residence for some of the leading country music starts who have claimed their fame on the Grand Ole Opry stage and look to enjoy their life out of the limelight in this nearby historic community.

downtown franklin

The downtown area of Franklin offers an eclectic blend of boutique stores, restaurants and other whimsical attractions that visitors can enjoy before heading over to The Factory which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now home to an additional collection of stores, restaurants and offices.

For the historians out there looking to learn more about Tennessee history, the city of Franklin is perhaps one of the most iconic, especially in relation to the Civil War and the role this location played. Today, visitors can explore historic buildings such as the Lotz House Museum, Carnton Plantation, and Carter House. If you are looking for the best things to do in Franklin , you can be sure there are plenty of attractions that will satisfy all the family.

Other Destinations

While have focused on five epic locations that we consider to be the perfect weekend getaway destinations in Tennessee, there are plenty of other areas that should be considered.

For those looking to enjoy the great outdoors, Falls Creek Falls State Park offers plenty of hiking trails and panoramic scenery year round. If you are traveling around the eastern side of the state and looking for another urban getaway, the city of Knoxville is worth exploring (and home of the University of Tennessee).

fall creek falls state park

One of our favorite recommendations is to combine a trip to two of Tennessee’s iconic cities, by taking a road trip from Memphis to Nashville . During the drive along I-40, spend some time in the city of Jackson which is the perfectly located to break up the 3 hour drive to Music City.

The state of Tennessee may not be the first area of the US you think about visiting for a weekend getaway, but with the collection of destinations ranging from urban to rural gems, this is definitely a state that should be on everyone’s radar.

While the cities of Memphis and Nashville continue to be popular attractions for visitors, those lesser known areas such as Franklin, Chattanooga among others deserve as much recognition and worth visiting for an epic weekend getaway.

We haven’t been able to explore Tennessee outside of the major cities yet. Getting out for some hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains is high on our To Do list, as is exploring many of the smaller towns around the state. So much beauty and history – we can’t wait!

10 Weekend Getaways in Tennessee | Whiskey, Country Music, Volunteer Football and More

Even if you’re not from Tennessee, you’ve likely heard of things from there. The Southern state is known for Jack Daniels whiskey, country music, and finger-licking barbecue. From east to west, the Volunteer State has some of the most charming towns and alluring cities the South has to offer. Country roads wind from the plains to the hills of the Smoky Mountains and there’s far more to explore than just cities made famous by the music scene (we’re looking at you Nashville and Memphis).

Below, we’ve rounded up the best weekend getaways in Tennessee to make your next trip as sweet as the tea south of the Mason-Dixon.

Chattanooga | Unparalleled Outdoor Scene

Nicknamed the ‘Scenic City,’ Chattanooga is located right in the heart of the Tennessee Valley. Surrounded by mountains with the Tennessee River snaking through the valley, the views are incredible.

Chattanooga has twice been named ‘The Best Town Ever’ by Outdoor Magazine. The ample amount of outdoor activities are one of the main reasons young people are moving to Chattanooga. Hot summers and mild winters mean you can be outside, paddle boarding on the Tennessee River, or hang-gliding off Lookout Mountain, nine to ten months out of the year.

Where to eat in Chattanooga: For upscale Southern cooking, check out The Public House. Set in the heart of Warehouse Row, a chic shopping space in downtown Chattanooga, you should start with an order (or two) of the pimento cheese and fried pickles, hands down our favorite dish here.

Why fall?: Summers in the South are sweltering to say the least. Go in the fall when the leaves are bursting with color. It’s stunningly beautiful and the weather is perfect.

Franklin | growing like a weed.

Named after Benjamin Franklin, this small town is the fastest growing city in the state of Tennessee. History buffs may know it for the Battle of Franklin during the Civil War, and old historic homes are still open to the public for tours.

Just 20-miles south of Nashville, Franklin focuses on taking things down a notch from the chaos of the city. The slower pace is palpable and reminiscent of a time gone by. ‘America’s Favorite Main Street’ is chock full of boutiques and mom-and-pop restaurants and visitors are welcome to spend the day strolling aimlessly about, just enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.

Where to eat in Franklin: Tupelo Honey – a favorite of locals and visitors alike. They take a creative twist on typical Southern classics like pimento cheese nachos, Southern fried chicken BLT, and Tupelo shrimp and grits — all from Chef Eric Gabrynowicz, a James Beard Award Semifinalist.

Other times to go to Franklin: Spring during Main Street Festival. Artists of every type stand proudly behind their booths, selling everything from handmade jewelry to hand-stamped leather goods. You really get a feel for the charm of this town during Main Street Fest.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Franklin

Gatlinburg | more tourists than locals.

Home to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited National Park in the U.S, Gatlinburg sits on less than 10 square miles. With only 4,200 residents, the town hosts more visitors (10 million annually!) than locals. People flock to the East Tennessee town to hike the park, ski the only ski resort in the whole state and sip moonshine.

The park is dog-friendly as long as pets are leashed, and the trails are gorgeous, making it a great thing to do with the whole family. The small town is great for a quick weekend trip or an afternoon stop if you’re just passing through.

Where to eat in Gatlinburg: Bennett’s Pit BBQ is a local favorite.

Other times to go to Gatlinburg: Visit Gatlinburg during the holiday season. You’ll be able to hike the mountains and ski while you’re in town. Plus the Village Shops are uber charming when they’re decorated for Christmas.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Gatlinburg

Knoxville | volunteer country.

The people of Knoxville , Tennessee, the third-largest city in the state, really do bleed orange. This is Volunteer Country, a place that shuts down on Saturdays to share their school spirit.

Home of the University of Tennessee, and the nearly 30,000 students who attend, football season is the most important time of year. Neyland Stadium seats a staggering 102,455 people and is close to capacity for almost every home game. A Saturday at Neyland is a lot like Sundays at church for most people and they take their school spirit seriously. Pro tip — plan ahead and pack lots of orange and white clothing and you’ll blend right in. When the Tennessee Volunteers aren’t playing, you can enjoy walking around downtown’s Market Square, surrounded by dozens of shops, bars, and restaurants.

Where to eat in Knoxville: Head to The Tomato Head, where you’ll likely be seated amongst gaggles of college kids and families with kids. The restaurant is a favorite of all ages and serves delicious pizzas and sandwiches.

When to go to Knoxville: Go for a Volunteer football game, particularly a big rivalry match such as Georgia, Florida, or Alabama.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Knoxville

Lookout mountain | is it tennessee or georgia.

Lookout Mountain straddles the state line so you’re not quite sure which state you’re in. Rock City, though technically in Georgia, is a beautiful place to visit. Built into the side of the mountain, the park features ancient rock formations that you get to crawl and slide between in order to pass through.

Impressive views of the Tennessee Valley reward you at several vistas and you can even see seven states from one vantage point atop Lover’s Leap. The town of Lookout Mountain is a charmer and winding streets take you through gorgeous neighborhoods and sometimes along precarious mountainside curves.

Where to eat near Lookout Mountain: Café on the Corner, set in an old grocery store from the early 1900s, serves delicious Southern food. Grab a patio seat if you can.

When to go to Lookout Mountain: Visit Lookout Mountain in the fall to catch the leaves changing colors. From the top of the mountain, you’ll have views of the entire Tennessee Valley which, in October, is awash in electric reds, oranges, and yellows as the fall foliage hits its peak.

Lynchburg | whiskey-drenched charm.

You’ve probably heard of the most famous guy from this small town — one Mr. Jack Daniels. The whiskey distillery is based here and you should make time to sign up for a tour. Located in central Tennessee, Lynchburg is a legit one-stoplight town and has a population of only a few thousand people. The small-town charm extends to visitors, though, and you can be sure there’s enough whiskey to go around.

Where to eat in Lynchburg: Voted one of the best BBQ restaurants in the state, visitors must try Barrelhouse BBQ.

Other times to go to Lynchburg: Spring, when the flowers just being to bloom.

Memphis | home of the king.

As you may well know, Elvis Presley called Memphis home. If you’re looking to visit, you can add visiting the King of Rock and Roll’s home to your itinerary. The music legend lived at Graceland mansion, and today the 14-acre estate is open to the public for daily tours.

Set right along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, famed Beale Street comes alive just as the sun sets. Music spills onto the streets from blues bars and jazz lounges and musicians still come to the city to record at famous studios on Beale. Southern hospitality is alive and well here – you simply won’t find nicer people — and best of all, it’s an affordable place to visit.

Where to eat in Memphis: You can’t come to the BBQ capital of the state and not get BBQ. Head to Central BBQ, where the line will likely be out the door on the weekend. Get a pulled pork sandwich topped with slaw, hot wings, dry rub ribs, and creamy mac and cheese — and maybe bring a friend to share with.

Other times to go to Memphis: Spring, before the summer sweats take over. This is the best time to see the city and be able to enjoy exploring outside without having a heat stroke.

Nashville | music city.

The capital of the Volunteer State, Nashville has long been home to country music singers, songwriters, and hopefuls trying to make a name for themselves in the music scene. Downtown Nashville has always been filled with honky-tonks and cafes — the stages for many up and comers.

But modern-day Music City is much more than a music destination. The food scene is probably one of the hottest in the country right now; award-winning chefs are flying south to add their own personal flair to Southern cuisine culture and food critics are taking notice. From clothing designers and mixologists to boutique hotel owners and artists, creatives of all shapes and sizes are finding a home in Nashville.

Where to eat in Nashville: Princes Hot Chicken – and don’t you dare order anything spicier than Medium. The story goes, a woman suspected her man was cheating on her so she tried to use his love of fried chicken against him. One morning, she added crazy amounts of cayenne to her recipe, thinking the heat would hurt him. Turns out, he dug right in and enjoyed every bit. ‘He’ was Thronton Prince and Princes Hot Chicken was born. Now, 100 years later, the restaurant still draws a crowd.

Other times to go to Nashville: Early June for CMA Fest. Even if you aren’t a huge country music fan, the festival is a heck of a good time.

The Great Smoky Mountains are the birthplace of one of the most famous country singers in the world. Dolly Parton was born and raised in Sevier County, which includes Pigeon Forge , and has left her mark on her hometown. Dollywood, her popular eponymous theme park, is one of the top draws for visitors. Nestled at the base of the Smoky Mountains, there are over 40 rides in the park. Next door, the waterpark Dollywood Splash Country is a great place to cool down.

Where to eat in Pigeon Forge: One of our favorite Dolly venues is the Dixie Stampede. It’s a dinner theater with a Southern twist. Watch as riders atop 32 gorgeous horses prance, race and do tricks. You’ll enjoy a delicious Southern supper while you enjoy the show.

Other times to go: Summertime, so you can enjoy both of Dolly’s parks.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Pigeon Forge

Townsend | gateway to the smokies.

Known as the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, Townsend is an especially small town in East Tennessee and a great base for exploring the outdoors. Here, you can stroll through the Smokies, spend an afternoon riding bikes around town, go fishing or enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride.

We love packing a picnic and heading out to Cades Cove. The valley is one of the most popular sections of the Smokies and gets around two million visitors a year. You could easily lose track of the day lying in the grass, watching all the different types of wildlife mill about. Historic homesteads dot the cove and visitors can peek in and get a glimpse of the life early settlers here had.

Other times to go: For Spring Heritage Festival and Old Timers Day. The festival is in May and features bluegrass music, clogging performances, and delicious BBQ.

Known as the “South’s Grand Hotel,” this Forbes Four-Star, AAA Four-Diamond hotel in downtown Memphis will give you and your loved one a truly imperial getaway. Opening its doors in 1869, this luxury hotel offers high-class accommodations with a historic setting right in the city.

As you walk into the Peabody, you might notice something interesting: ducks floating around the lobby fountain. These special ducks are part of the hotel’s legacy. Back in the 1930s, General Manager Frank Schutt and a friend returned to the hotel after a hunting trip to Arkansas. Filling up a little too much on that Tennessee whiskey, the men thought it would be funny to place some of their duck decoys in the beautiful fountain at the entrance. And right there started the Peabody Duck tradition, where small ducks revel in the hotel’s fountain every day between 11 am and 5 pm.

In 1940, a then-bellman at the Peabody and former circus animal trainer taught the ducks the now-famous Peabody Duck March. You can catch them strutting down the red carpet of their very on each afternoon. When the ducks are off duty, they live the high life on the Peabody’s rooftop, in a $200,000 structure made of marble and glass with its own fountain, house, and a grassy “front yard.”

The top thing to do in Huntsville is to visit the world-class Space and Rocket Center, a museum that features a replica of the Saturn V rocket, which was used for the Apollo moon-landing missions. This replica stands proudly upright outside the museum and can be seen from many spots in Huntsville. Other space shuttles, airplanes, and rockets are on display outside, and inside, you can see many exhibits about space exploration, including an authentic Saturn V rocket, along with different space-related exhibits.

Stop by the Huntsville Botanical Gardens next door when you’re done at the Space and Rocket Center. There are peaceful flower gardens and trails to walk and explore, and a fun children’s garden and butterfly house to play in. Downtown Huntsville is a charming little area to explore, get food, or discover murals. If you fancy a hike, visit Monte Sano State Park for many great trails or bike down the several greenways throughout the city.

Then, burn off the calories and hike a trail in the Smokies. The most popular hikes include the Porters Creek Trail, Laurel Falls, and the Alum Cave Trail. Finish the morning with breakfast at Crockett’s Breakfast Camp. You can also sample the local spirits on a moonshine and wine tour or sip at your leisure. The can’t-miss stops include Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine and Mountain Valley Winery.

If you have more time, check out the Titanic Museum , Paula Deen’s Country Kitchen, a Jeep sightseeing tour , and shopping at The Island!

12. Atlanta, Georgia

  • Distance from Nashville: 249 miles

Just under a four-hour drive from Nashville, Atlanta, Georgia, may be one of the longer day trips from Nashville, but it certainly makes a perfect weekend trip!

There are tons of fun things to do in Atlanta during your weekend trip from Nashville. First, head downtown and visit the Georgia Aquarium —one of the largest aquariums in the world! You can easily spend half the day exploring this world-class aquarium’s top-notch exhibits. Get skip-the-line tickets to make the most of your trip. If you have time, check out some of the other cool museums at attractions downtown, like the World of Coca-Cola , College Football Hall of Fame, and Centennial Olympic Park.

You also can’t miss the chance to explore the attractions in midtown Atlanta. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens are one of the can’t-miss attractions in the city. Don’t miss the 25-foot Earth Goddess Sculpture while you’re there! You can also explore the Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail with tons of restaurants, shopping, and attractions along the way. There are tons of things to do in Atlanta, so you may want to consider an Atlanta CityPass to get the most bang for your buck!

If you’re looking for something to eat, head over to Ponce City Market or Krog Street Market for a wide selection of local vendors and restaurants. Atlanta is also filled with tons of craft breweries, so head to Monday Night Brewing for a beer before calling it a night!

13. Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

  • Distance from Nashville: 94 miles

As the longest-known cave system in the world, Mammoth Cave National Park does live up to its name! Established in 1941, the park consists of 52,830 acres, including the cave and an extensive trail system.

The caves have regular tours that visitors can embark on. The tours explore various parts of the cave system, including the history of the cave. Cave tours are held year-round, although winter sees fewer tourists and fewer tours. The cave is generally 54ÂșF year-round. However, surface temperatures can vary wildly depending on the season.

Mammoth Cave National Park is about an hour and 45 minutes from Nashville. Hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores are located in nearby Cave City, KY. There’s a hotel within the park, the Lodge at Mammoth Cave, which offers hotel rooms adjacent to the visitor center. It’s the perfect place to stay if you want to extend your trip to Mammoth Cave National Park for more than just one day!

14. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

  • Distance from Nashville: 223 miles

One of the longer day trips from Nashville is the four-hour one-way car ride east to Gatlinburg. While it can be a stretch if you strictly have one day to spare, this day trip can be done if you leave early in the morning and drive back later that night or if you plan a weekend trip from Nashville to Gatlinburg!

Because a majority of things to do are within walking distance from one another it is possible to see the city and do many of the best attractions in the area in just a day. However, if you can stretch your stay further, spending at least one night in Gatlinburg is recommended so that you can take your time and not miss any of the fun, especially if you want to hike in the Smoky Mountains. While downtown Gatlinburg is frequently labeled as one of the largest tourist traps in America for families you may be surprised to learn that there are also a decent amount of free and  cheap things to do in Gatlinburg for adults !

Begin your morning or early afternoon in Gatlinburg with a local cup of coffee or sit down for brunch at Crockett’s Breakfast Camp. After fueling up for the day you can enjoy walking the strip and shopping or go moonshine tasting!

Then, spend the second half of your afternoon by purchasing a SkyLift ticket and riding up to the SkyBridge where you’ll get the chance to walk across the longest pedestrian cable bridge in North America. For dinner, you’ll have no shortage of options to pick from right downtown!

15. Knoxville, Tennessee

  • Distance from Nashville: 180 miles

Knoxville is one of the best day trips from Nashville, and it makes for a great weekend trip too!

Start your day with breakfast at Olibea. Named after the owner’s two children, Oliver and Beatrice, this popular breakfast spot serves up breakfast favorites with a southern twist. Then, explore the Old City. The history of this neighborhood dates to the 1850s when a new rail system was built, and old JFG Coffee signs still line the railroad and speak to this earlier time. Pick up a hand-blown glass from Pretentious Glass Co. or local souvenirs from Rala.

Next, head to the World’s Fair Park. Wondering what that tall, shiny sphere is dotting the Knoxville skyline? The Sunsphere was built when the City of Knoxville hosted the 1982 World’s Fair, and today it is an event venue with a free observation deck that offers an aerial view of the city. The World’s Fair Site is now a public park used for festivals and events and connects downtown to the Tennessee River via the city’s lengthy greenway system.

After, shop at Market Square, Knoxville’s downtown hub for restaurants, concerts, and festivals. If you are here on Saturday, you can shop at the Farmer’s Market or ice skate during the holiday season. Grab lunch at The Tomato Head, peruse Union Ave. Books, and don’t miss the Dolly Parton mural in the northeast corner. Then, you can grab an ice cream from Cruze Farm Dairy or coffee from Frothy Monkey while strolling the main drag of historic downtown.

Finally, enjoy dinner at A Dopo Sourdough Pizza and drinks at the Peter Kern Library. If you decide Knoxville merits more than a day trip, the Oliver Hotel is one of the city’s best and longest-standing local boutique hotels. It’s the perfect place to stay during your weekend trip to Knoxville from Nashville!

There are countless reasons to spend the weekend in  Knoxville .

Nestled just one hour north of the spectacular Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Knoxville often gets overlooked by its more famous neighboring cities and attractions.

Neyland Stadium at University of Tennessee Knoxville

That’s a shame, though, as Knoxville is an absolute gem , jam-packed with fun things to do year-round, vibrant energy, and scenic views.

Here’s what you can expect when spending three days or the weekend in Knoxville:

  • Beautiful mountain scenery
  • A family-friendly atmosphere
  • Excellent foodie and nightlife scenes
  • Fun games at the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!)
  • Southern hospitality and charm

All in all, Knoxville makes for an awesome weekend getaway .

To help you discover this underrated Tennessee city, we put together the perfect weekend in Knoxville itinerary with the best things to do, places to eat, nightlife, and more! ⬇️

Table of Contents

The Best 3-Day Weekend in Knoxville Itinerary

We included a bit of everything in this 3-day Knoxville itinerary for every type of traveler — outdoor enthusiasts,  couples , families, foodies, history buffs, solo adventurers — to make it easy to do just that!

That said, please note that our Knoxville weekend itinerary assumes you’ll arrive in the early evening and have two full days to spare in Knoxville.

If your timeline is different, feel free to mix and match activities to suit your schedule!

Day 1 in Knoxville

Knoxville's Sunsphere tower.

☀️ Get a 360 view in the Sunsphere Tower

The giant, shiny gold disco ball-topped structure was built especially for the 1982 World’s Fair.

Today, it’s  one of the most popular things to do on any weekend in Knoxville itinerary , showcasing some of the city’s best views.

From the fourth-floor observation deck, visitors enjoy a 360-degree view of Knoxville and the Great Smokies, including the Tennessee River and UT campus.

If you arrive before 5:00 pm on Friday, head directly to the iconic  Sunsphere (if you don’t make it in time, go Saturday morning; it opens at 9:00 am!).

Observation deck admission is just $5 and children under 12 are free. The Sunsphere is closed on Mondays and daily from 1:30-2:30.

Henley Bridge in Knoxville Tennessee at night with lights

🦪 Dinner in Market Square

After (literally!) getting the lay of the land, the next item on your Knoxville weekend itinerary is dinner.

Depending on what you’re up for, head to  Stock & Barrel for locally-sourced craft burgers and a dizzying bourbon selection, or  The Brass Pearl for amazing oysters.

We know…oysters aren’t exactly synonymous with  Knoxville restaurants , but trust us!

Stock & Barrel is infamous for having a long wait and doesn’t take reservations.

So, have the best of both worlds by putting your name in, then walking around the corner to The Brass Pearl for a cocktail and oysters.

🌆 Rooftop drinks and live music

Practically adjacent to The Brass Pearl are several excellent bars and live music venues. You can hop around to find your favorite, but there are a few standouts.

  • Preservation Pub — live music 365 nights a year
  • Scruffy City Hall — owned by the same folks as Pres Pub next door, each floor of the tri-story building has a unique vibe
  • Alice in Appalachia — an immersive Alice in Wonderland-themed bar

Day 2 in Knoxville

🛒 Shop local at the Market Square Farmers Market

If you’re visiting from May through mid-November, the Saturday morning  Market Square Farmers Market needs to be on your weekend in Knoxville itinerary!

Head over around 9:00 am when it opens, grab a coffee and pastry from one of these awesome Knoxville food trucks , then browse.

You’ll find fresh produce, meats, baked goodies, flowers, artisan crafts, and more, all from makers and growers within a 150-mile radius of Knoxville. Oh, and pick up lunch to go for your next stop!

Visiting mid-week? The market is also held on Wednesdays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

fun weekend trips tennessee

📻 Blue Plate Special

After the market, stroll five minutes to the Knoxville Visitors Center.

There are tons of souvenirs to browse here, but head to the WDVX radio studio for the  Blue Plate Special .

This music performance is broadcast live on the radio six days a week from 12-1:00 pm, and it’s totally FREE!

The event showcases a vast range of artists, and you can enjoy it with BYO lunch.

Nashville and Memphis may be more well-known as great music cities, but Knoxville definitely holds its own!

🍻 Knoxville Ale Trail tour (family-friendly!)

Now it’s time to see what  Knoxville’s thriving brewery scene is all about!

First, download the FREE digital  Knoxville Ale Trail Passport .

As you visit participating breweries, you’ll get digital “stamps” that you can redeem for prizes including a pint glass and t-shirt.

There are about two dozen participating breweries and many are within walking distance of each other, making it easy to create a self-guided tour.

Several breweries are clustered together just a few minutes north of the Visitors Center, such as:

  • Geezers Brewing Co.
  • Xul Beer Company (next to Geezers)
  • Crafty Bastard Brewery
  • Barrelhouse by Gypsy Circus Cider
  • Next Level Brewing

Most breweries have dog-friendly patios with yard games, frequent live music and food trucks, and an overall family-friendly vibe.

Knoxville Brew Tours offer weekend bus tours, and the latter offers a downtown walking tour, which is also offered Monday-Friday.

Tours visit a minimum of four breweries, all Ale Trail Passport participants, and include three tastings per brewery, snacks, and a souvenir mug. The Brew Tours option starts and finishes at Knox Brew Hub, where you redeem your passport for prizes!

Note: While individual breweries are family- and dog-friendly, the tours are not .

🔥 Dinner & a night out

Treat yourself to an upscale dinner at  J.C. Holdway , headed up by one of Tennessee’s only James Beard-winning chefs.

The restaurant puts a modern twist on classic Appalachian dishes , serving wood-fired, contemporary small plates.

If you want something with a view, head to  Calhoun’s on the River , a popular BBQ joint on the waterfront. Reservations are highly recommended for both restaurants.

After dinner, choose your own adventure.

Keep it low-key with a drink at Knoxville’s only speakeasy ,  Peter Kern Library , or head to  Harrogate’s Lounge to play retro arcade games.

Of course, you can always find live music at dozens of hotspots across the city. Check the  Visit Knoxville Live Music Calendar for the most complete, up-to-date info.

Day 3 in Knoxville

fun weekend trips tennessee

Depending on when you’re heading home, you have some choices to make about the final day of your Knoxville weekend itinerary.

We’ve included a full day of activities in Knoxville below for your third day, but you can also take a day trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or  Dollywood theme park, each under an hour away.

🌿 Ijams Nature Center

Grab coffee and donuts near your hotel (we love Status Dough and the Gay Street K Brew location) and head to  Ijams Nature Center , an outdoor lovers’ paradise just 10 minutes from downtown — that feels like it’s worlds away.

Explore 12+ miles of Knoxville hiking and biking trails, get an intense workout in at the unique Primal Playground, take a dip in the creek, or rent a kayak, paddleboard, canoe, or tube.

Kiddos LOVE the Nature Playscape, and there’s also  Navitat , a zipline adventure park with a variety of trails and obstacle courses.

For adults, there’s even a beer garden!

Best of all, Ijams is free to enjoy, with the exception of Navitat and boat rentals (and beer, of course!).

☔️ Rainy day alternative: Shopping in Old City

Rain is not uncommon in East Tennessee in any season, so it’s a good idea to have a Plan B for anything outdoors on your weekend in Knoxville itinerary.

If the weather isn’t favorable, browse the shops in a part of town known as Old City .

The former industrial hub has an eclectic, artsy vibe and tons of character, with many of the businesses occupying converted warehouses.

There are dozens of cool galleries and boutiques with everything from clothing to home goods.

Local favorites include Jack’s of Knoxville, Magnolia Records, and Mid Mod Collective.

While you’re here, have brunch at  OliBea , a local Knoxville brunch favorite. (Order the tacos or Tennessee Benedict!)

🍺 Brunch & beer in Old City

After working up an appetite, grab lunch and beer in Old City.

Pretentious Beer Co. is a unique, very  un pretentious spot serving craft beer in glasses hand-blown onsite.

It’s one of our favorite breweries in Knoxville !

fun weekend trips tennessee

There’s a fast-casual Asian food concept at Pretentious or head down the street for some German-style food & beer at Schulz Bräu Brewing Company .

🖼 Knoxville Museum of Art

The free  Knoxville Museum of Art is a great way to wind down a busy day (it closes at 5:00 pm).

Located in World’s Fair Park, the museum showcases mostly local Tennessee art, with a sprinkling of global contemporary pieces.

If you didn’t have a chance to explore World’s Fair Park when you visited the Sunsphere, this is a good time to do that.

🍱 Quick, casual dinner at Marble City Market

Before heading home, wrap up your weekend in Knoxville itinerary with a bite at  Marble City Market .

This fun food hall concept features several local food vendors, plus a cozy bar.

Other Fun Things to Do with 3 Days in Knoxville

If you have more time or want more options, here are a handful of other unique things to do in Knoxville in 2-3 days.

Art Market sign on Gay Street, Knoxville

🦒 Get wild at Zoo Knoxville

53-acre  Zoo Knoxville is home to some of the world’s most amazing animals, including the endangered Red Panda and Arakan forest turtles.

There are 11 unique habitats, housing over 1,200 animals.

Zoo Knoxville is open daily from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and admission ranges from $22-27.

🌸 Knoxville Botanical Gardens

Spend an afternoon strolling the FREE, picture-perfect  Knoxville Botanical Gardens .

Pick up a walking tour map from the visitor center and spend an hour or so literally stopping to smell the roses. Dogs are also welcome!

There are over 26 points of interest along the way, with highlights including the Bamboo Forest, Pollinator Garden, and the serene Secret Garden.

🍔 Take a food tour

Whether you’ve never experienced a food tour or you’re a frequent flyer, we highly recommend  Knoxville Food Tours .

Not only will you get to sample several of the city’s very best restaurants, but the tour is also led by a local historian who shares fascinating tidbits about Knoxville.

Tours last 2.5-3 hours, involve walking just over one mile and take place rain or shine.

🎭 Catch a show at the Tennessee Theatre

Cap off a day of exploring Knoxville with a live performance at the historic  Tennessee Theatre . It’s been open since 1928!

Depending on your trip dates, you may be able to catch a play, concert, symphony, or comedy show.

Best Places to Stay for a Weekend in Knoxville

There’s no shortage of fantastic vacation rentals and hotels in Knoxville for a weekend trip.

As most attractions in Knoxville are centered around the downtown core and university, we highly recommend staying in this area .

Several hotspots are within walking distance including Market Square, Gay Street, and World’s Fair Park, plus you can take advantage of the  free trolley .

This is one of the best places to spend fall in Tennessee for nature loves and history buffs alike! In the early 1800s, cades cove was home to European settlers. Many historic buildings can be seen along the loop including log cabins, quaint churches, and even a working mill. Halfway through the drive, visitors can stop by the visitors center to learn more about the history of the area.

Lookout Mountain

The upscale town of Lookout Mountain is located just a short drive outside of Chattanooga, but is a destination in itself with many exciting things to do! It is one of the best places to experience fall in Tennessee for nature lovers, boasting stunning views from the town’s namesake mountain and fascinating natural wonders!

Ride the historic Incline Railway, a trolley-style railway car that makes its way up to the top of Lookout Mountain at a nearly vertical angle. At the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the town below among the foliage-covered landscape.

Visit the spectacular Ruby Falls, located deep within the caverns hidden inside Lookout Mountain . You can also take in the famous “seven state views” from Rock City, a walking trail at the top of the mountain with interesting rock formations, lush gardens, and even a waterfall overlooking the scenery below.

If you are looking for things to do in Chattanooga in the fall, make sure to take time to visit Lookout Mountain too!

Big South Fork National River

Located just south of the Kentucky border, the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River winds its way through miles of scenic sandstone gorges. The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure-seekers to experience fall in Tennessee!

During the fall, the trees on the shores of the river boast vibrant fall colors. Get lost in the stunning scenery on one of the many hiking trails or opt to explore the area on horseback. Big South Fork also boasts one of the largest concentrations of natural rock arches and chimneys in the Eastern part of the country.

If you can brave the chilly water, paddling, kayaking, white water rafting are all popular water sports to take part in on the river. Rock climbing is also popular here and is a great way to get a birds-eye view of the river and beyond. Whether you are looking for a leisurely stroll or a thrilling outdoor adventure, Big South Fork is where to see fall colors in Tennessee!

Roaring Fork Motor Trail

This stunning scenic drive makes a perfect side trip from the Smoky Mountains! The Roaring Fork Motor Trail is where to see fall colors in Tennessee near Gatlinburg for those looking for a unique and slow-paced drive!

If you visit after heavy rainfall, you will understand how the road got its name. There are quiet mountain streams and rushing waterfalls to be seen all along this narrow, winding road. If you’re up for a hike, make the 5-mile trek to the park’s most popular waterfall, Rainbow Falls, and take a detour to see Grotto Falls on the way back.

Another interesting hike is the Noah “Bud” Ogle self-guided nature trail which starts just before the entrance to the motor trail. This trail takes visitors to an authentic mountain farmstead nestled in lush forest surroundings that come to life during the fall. Whether you want to hike to a waterfall or just enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your car, this motor trail is one of the best places to experience fall in Tennessee!

Bays Mountain Park

Bay Mountain Park is a 3,650-acre nature preserve located in Kingsport in the Northeast corner of the state. This enormous park is stunning during a Tennessee fall with vibrant colors in every direction.

The park features a nature preserve, planetarium, beautiful lake, and 40 miles of hiking and biking trails. There are many different trails for all different skill levels. Hike to a gorgeous waterfall or take the Fire Tower Trail and climb to the top of a viewing tower for stunning panoramic views of fall foliage and mountainous landscapes.

After taking in the views, stop by the nature center to learn about the local wildlife or catch a show at the planetarium! Bays Mountain Park is a great place to experience fall in Tennessee for families or for anyone who wants to be immersed in nature.

Radnor Lake State Park

Randor Lake is an amazing location for fall photography in Tennessee! When the leaves change color, they reflect beautifully in the water, creating a magical scene. Because there is such a diverse amount of plants, the colors range across the fall color spectrum.

There are 7.75-miles of trails for hiking only. The trails vary in length and difficulty featuring wooden bridges and views of the lake. The 0.20-mile Dam Walkway is the shortest and easiest. It is also ADA accessible, making it perfect for the whole family.

If you want to walk your dog on a leash or ride a bike, you can enjoy the 1.05-mile Otter Creek Road route. No matter which trail you choose, you will be granted access to beautiful Tennessee fall foliage.

The park is also superb for wildlife viewing. Keep an eye out for owls, herons, mink, otters, and turtles.

Burgess Falls State Park

Found on the Falling Water River, Burgess Falls State Park is one of the best things to do in Tennessee in October. As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, you will have a great time hiking along the river.

There are four waterfalls here that are gorgeous when paired with the fall colors of Tennessee. The biggest is Burgess Falls which cascades over a cliff for 130 feet. This is one of the best waterfalls in Tennessee ! While in fall it is too chilly for swimming, the pool formed at the base of the falls is a great place for a dip in the heat of summer.

The River Trail is 1.6 miles out and back. While it is rated difficult because of the many inclines, it is worth the trek for the amazing views of the waterfalls.

We hope this article helped you find things to do in Tennessee in September and October! Fall is truly a wonderful time of year to visit Tennessee for nature lovers and adventure-seekers alike. 1. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Recommended by Victoria of Southern Trippers

If you’re looking for great weekend trips from Nashville, TN then you can’t beat a getaway to Gatlinburg.

After all, this charming mountain town is just a four-hour drive from Nashville and is known throughout the state for being the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains.

So, you can easily visit local landmarks like Cades Cove and the Deep Creek area as you enjoy the best things to do in Gatlinburg.

And while there is plenty to do in Gatlinburg, it’s only a town of 3,700 people. Therefore, a weekend is the perfect amount of time to enjoy top attractions like the 407-foot tall Space Needle observation tower and the 2.1-mile long aerial Sky Lift cable car

Not only does this incredible cable car offer stunning panoramas of the surrounding mountains, but it will take you to the amusement park and ski resort at Ober Gatlinburg too.

Afterward, drive The Roaring Fork Motor Trail. It’s a 6-mile long, one-way, loop track that takes you past some incredible views of local waterfalls. So, be sure to pack a picnic lunch so that you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the view.

But, if you’re not sure where to eat in this incredible town, then you can’t go wrong with Crockett’s Breakfast Camp .

In fact, they’ve been serving locals a wide variety of decadent Appalachian delights like scramblers, omelets, Cherokee sweet corn pone, candied apples,  and grits since 1840.

You can also unwind at Berry Springs Lodge and spend a few night’s relaxing in the hot tub at this incredible, 4-star hotel.

2. Memphis, Tennessee

Recommended by Kristin of World on Wheels

Memphis makes a fantastic weekend trip from Nashville as it’s just over three hours away and many of the highlights of the city can be seen in a couple of days. Visitors will enjoy the plethora of ways to immerse yourself in music and history during your time in Memphis. Highlights of your trip will include a Sun Studio tour where you can stand in the same place where many popular musicians have recorded albums, seeing where Elvis lived with his family at Graceland, and learning about the fight for human rights at the Civil Rights Museum.

During your stay in Memphis, the Sheraton Downtown Memphis is an excellent choice as it’s nearby to many attractions and the trolley is located just steps away. The trolley is an affordable way to get around when you get tired of walking. It also takes you close to the most popular areas of the city.

For fantastic live music performances and good food, head to the Blues City Cafe . Their menu has something for everyone on it and has hosted many famous musicians like BB King, Kid Rock and Queen Latifa. Alternatively, you could also choose to dine where Elvis once ate breakfast at the Arcade Restaurant . It is also considered to be the oldest café in Memphis.

So whether you’re here for the music, museums or delicious food, Memphis is one of the best weekend trips from Nashville.

3. St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis is a great weekend trip from Nashville! The city is thriving and packed with attractions and activities that will keep you entertained for days. Whether it is a girls’ weekend, a solo trip, or a family affair, there are enough sights to create the perfect itinerary.

There are many historic neighborhoods, museums, and landmarks that tell the story of the city. Stop in at Soulard Farmer s Market to pick up some local goods before exploring the city.

The Gateway Arch has become the symbol of St. Louis. No trip would be complete without stopping here. Look through the museum, ride to the top, and take a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River.

The City Museum is another must while visiting. This attraction lets you bring out your inner kid with a 10-story slide, a rooftop Ferris Wheel, and countless other things to do.

Citygarden, Forest Park, Laumeier Sculpture Park, and the Missouri Botanical Garden are all great options for getting outdoors to appreciate art and nature. Other popular attractions in St. Louis include the National Blues Museum, Busch Stadium, Union Station, and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.

The drive from Nashville to St Louis is around five hours. Book a stay at the Hyatt Regency for easy access to the downtown sights.

Grab a bite of classic barbeque with a twist at Salt + Smoke . Try some signature dishes like the fried jalapeno and cheddar bologna, pimento cheese toasted ravioli, or St. Louis cut ribs. St. Louis is worth visiting for the food alone and is why it’s one of the best weekend trips from Nashville .

4. Helen, Georgia

Recommended by Stephanie of the Unknown Enthusiast

Helen, Georgia is one of the best weekend trips from Nashville, and is a fantastic destination in north Georgia . It’s about 4.5 hours away by car, but you’ll feel like you’ve entered a different country! Okay, while that may be a little bit of a stretch, there’s no denying that Helen is a super cute small town. It was designed to look like a typical German village, and all the buildings are half-timbered and look very European.

There are several delicious German restaurants in town. Hofbrauhaus is a favorite sit down restaurant for a meal, and the Hansel and Gretel Candy Kitchen has some delectable sweets. There are also shops selling a variety of European items.

In the summer, you can tube down the Chattahoochee River, which runs right through town. In the fall, come for Oktoberfest, and the traditional Christmas market in December is not to be missed.

While you can explore the entirety of Helen with a half-day, there are a ton of wonderful nature things to do just outside of town. As Helen is nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains, there are many, many incredible hiking trails and waterfalls. You can even do a section of the Appalachian Trail! Anna Ruby Falls is a popular, gorgeous, and easy waterfall, but Dukes Creek Falls is a personal favorite.

You could also visit one of the many vineyards in the area and do a wine tasting. Definitely drive up the Richard B Russell Scenic Highway and watch the sunset from the Hogpen Gap Overlook.

The Holiday Inn Express and Suites is a great option of where to stay in Helen. It’s right in town, has great ratings, and offers free parking and breakfast.

5. Louisville, Kentucky

Recommended by Francesca of Homeroom Travel

Louisville is one of the best weekend trips from Nashville, especially for bourbon lovers. Two days in Louisville is the perfect amount of time to spend to get a good sampling of the area.

From Nashville, it will take about 2 hours, 45 minutes to drive to Louisville. I recommend staying at the Courtyard Marriott Downtown or the Hampton Inn Downtown . Both are great locations and are affordable.

The most popular thing to do in Louisville is to go bourbon tasting. Near downtown Louisville, you can check out Angel’s Envy, Rabbit Hole, Cooper and Kings, or Evan Williams. Just outside of Louisville, you can visit Marker’s Mark or Four Roses. With these tours, you usually get a tour of the facility and learn how bourbon is made. After that, you get to sample some of the bourbons.

Outside of Bourbon tastings, Lousiville has a ton of fun museums to visit. Baseball lovers will enjoy the Louisville Slugger Museum, where you learn how baseball bats are made. At the Kentucky Derby Museum, visitors will learn the history of the Kentucky Derby.

In the wintertime, make sure to check out the Winter Woods Spectacular, an awesome drive-through life experience at Iroquois Park.

Louisville has a ton of delicious places to eat as well! Steak lovers will want to eat at Repeal-Oak Steakhouse . For breakfast, check out Wild Eggs or Biscuit Belly .

US Space and rocket center in huntsville, one of the best weekend trips from Nashville

6. Huntsville, Alabama

Recommended by Vicky of Buddy The Traveling Monkey

Another one of the best weekend trips from Nashville would be to Huntsville, Alabama. There are a lot of fun things to do in Huntsville ! One of their most popular attractions is the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Here you can learn about the space race and the development of the space shuttle program.

History lovers should visit Burritt on the Mountain. This property has over 160 acres and is made up of Dr. Burritt’s mansion, a historic park that has six authentic 19th century homes, a replica of a 1918 Rosenwald School, nature trails, and more.

For art lovers and creatives, a visit to Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment is a must. It is one of the largest private arts facilities in the southeast. While visiting you might see artists painting, sculpting, and even creating jewelry.

To eat and drink, head over to Campus 805. In what was once a school, you’ll now find multiple breweries, restaurants, bars, and even a speakeasy! A favorite restaurant is Ale’s Kitchen , where all the food is made from locally sourced ingredients. They’re also attached to Straight to Ale, an award-winning brewery.

Travelers can easily get to Huntsville from Nashville in less than two hours via I-65 South. To stay, we recommend the Hampton Inn Huntsville/Village of Providence . It offers free breakfast and free parking and is located just outside of the US Space and Rocket Center.

7. Chattanooga, Tennessee

Recommended by Kyleen of the Bonnie Traveler

Chattanooga, TN is the perfect weekend getaway from Nashville to explore the outdoors and experience nature. Chattanooga is less than two and a half hours from Nashville which makes it just right for a day trip or long weekend. Just remember, Chattanooga is in the Eastern Standard Time Zone.

During your visit to Chattanooga, head downtown to the Tennessee Aquarium. The aquarium has two glass-peaked towers that hold ocean ecosystems and freshwater habitats with over 12,000 marine and wildlife species. For art lovers, stroll up to the Bluff View Art District for a coffee and pastry at Rembrandt’s Coffee House and explore the American art at the Hunter Museum.

Two of the Scenic City’s most popular attractions are Rock City and Ruby Falls. Head up to the top of Lookout Mountain to discover the magic of Rock City. This fairy-tail-themed park leads visitors through natural rock features and swinging bridges to Lover’s Leap where you can see 7 states in the distance.  Ruby Falls is the largest subterranean waterfall in the US. Inside the mountain, guides show you the many fascinating geological features leading up to the falls.  Plus, the caves always stay a cool 60 degrees.

For cocktails, raw bar, and more, head to the Boathouse for dinner with a calming view of the Tennessee River. To get the full Chattanooga experience, make sure to stay at the Chattanooga ChooChoo . This converted Beaux-Arts-style train station is now a contemporary hotel where visitors can even book rooms in train cars. Just another reason why Chattanooga makes for one of the best weekend trips from Nashville .

8. Indianapolis, IN

Recommended by Rachel of Means to Explore

Nashville is within easy driving distance to one of the Midwest’s most underrated cities: Indianapolis, Indiana. Which is why it is one of the best weekend trips from Nashville .

Indy, as the locals call it, is significantly cheaper to visit than Chicago but offers many of the same amenities: sports, museums, concerts, and food. It’s also reliably cooler than Nashville, a welcome break from the humidity.

Indianapolis is a 4.5 hour drive north from Nashville. You’ll cross a toll bridge over the Ohio River, but tolls can be paid online after your trip. Also note that Indianapolis is in the Eastern time zone. You’ll lose an hour on your way out but gain it back on your drive home.

Indianapolis is most famous for its sporting events and conferences, hosting some of the Midwest’s biggest events throughout the year.

Thousands of racecar fans flock to the city every May for the Indianapolis 500 and August sees hordes of costumed fans for GenCon, a board gaming and sci-fi conference. While these aren’t the cheapest times to visit Indy, they’re definitely some of the most fun times to visit!

Trying to escape huge crowds? Visit any regular weekend and enjoy wandering around town at your leisure.

Visit the Indianapolis Art Museum, the Children’s Museum, or the NCAA Hall of Fame. Take a stroll along the canal or around Monument Circle. Eat your way down Mass Ave or try duck pin bowling in Fountain Square. Catch a concert at the Old National Center or enjoy a pint at The Rathskeller.

Add a dose of the outdoors to your exploration. On your drive to and from Nashville, you’ll pass by some of the best day trips from Indianapolis , many of which make for a good 1 or 2 hour stop to break up the drive.

You can’t come to Indy without trying its most famous restaurant: St Elmo’s Steak House . The steaks are, of course, delicious, but everyone comes here to try the shrimp cocktails. Watch out! The not-so-secret ingredient will have you reaching for a drink, stat! Reservations recommended.

For stellar views of Indianapolis and a walkable location to much of downtown, stay at the J.W. Marriott . Request a room on a higher floor facing the city (east).

view of the mountains in red river gorge, one of the best weekend trips from Nashville

9. Red River Gorge, Kentucky

Recommended by Jessica of Unearth the Voyage

When looking for a weekend trip from Nashville you have to put Red River Gorge on your list! Red River Gorge Geological Area is a canyon system with high sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, rock shelters and natural bridges. It is located only about 4.5 hours from Nashville and has a ton of things to do for nature lovers. It’s great for just a weekend trip because you can see all of the highlights of the area in just 2 days.

Some of the best things to do in Red River Gorge are hiking to some of the amazing natural bridges or waterfalls. A favorite day hike is to Creation Falls, a 1.5 mile loop that leads you to a gorgeous waterfall that you can swim in and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Another awesome hike in the area is to Double Arch, a 4.5 mile trail that leads you to spectacular views out over the Gorge.

If you want to change it up and do something different than hike, kayaking down the Red River is a fun and relaxing way to spend an afternoon. It takes about 4 hours to kayak down the Red River and you can enjoy some small rapids and lots of swimming holes to cool off in.

If you’re looking for a place to eat while in Red River Gorge make sure to check out Miguel’s Pizza . This pizza place has any topping you can imagine and a delicious crust. They also have lots of pasta options as well as build your own salads. There aren’t a ton of hotels in the area, so we would recommend renting a cabin nearby . Many of the cabins have incredible views and/or hot tubs to relax in after a long day of hiking!

You’ll definitely want to add Red River Gorge to your list of the best weekend trips from Nashville .

Mountain views in johnson city tn, one of the best weekend trips from Nashville

10. Johnson City, Tennessee

Recommended by Anna of Stuck on the Go

Johnson City is the perfect weekend trip from Nashville especially if you love the outdoors. It’s the largest city in northeast Tennessee but still has a small town charm. So you can go out on an adventure during the day then come back to great restaurants, breweries, and a cozy hotel.

It’s about a four hour and fifteen minute drive from Nashville so very doable after work on a Friday. So of course it is one of the best weekend trips from Nashville . Some of the most popular things to do here are hiking, biking, and whitewater rafting if you visit in the warmer months.

If you love to hike then you’ll love Johnson City. The best places to hike nearby are Beauty Spot (check it out at sunset), Buffalo Mountain, and Roan Mountain. Laurel Falls is a popular waterfall hike.

Tannery Knobs Bike Park is the perfect place to go if you love mountain biking. For rafting, USA Raft is an outpost on the Nolichucky River that leads great guided trips. The Class III – IV rapids make this a really fun river!

There are tons of great restaurants in Johnson City but a few of the top are Cootie Brown’s , White Duck Taco , and Southern Craft .

You won’t find a better place to stay than the Carnegie Hotel . It’s a four diamond property but you can still stay here at a reasonable price.

A waterfall in Smoky Mountain national park, one of the best weekend trips from Nashville

11. Smoky Mountain National Park

Recommended by Candice of CS Ginger

Visiting the Smoky Mountain National Park is a must if you are anywhere near Nashville, TN. The 3-hour drive is worth the trip to this beautiful area which is why it is one of the best weekend trips from Nashville . There are great hiking trails in the Smokies as well as beautiful scenery, waterfalls, and some really neat history. The Smokey Mountains is home to the Appalachian Trail, which runs through 14 states and 71 miles of the Appalachian Trail is in the Smoky Mountains.

The Smoky Mountains is free to visit and is a very popular national park because it has an abundance of wildlife. The summer and fall are great times to make a visit. In the summer, it gets warm but not overbearing, and in the fall, you will be able to see the beautiful fall colors the park offers.

12. Mammoth Cave National Park

Recommended by Anwar of Beyond my Door

Established in 1941, Mammoth Cave National Park protects the longest known cave system in the world. The park consists of both an extensive cave network and great hiking trails across its 52,830 acres. The park is a perfect weekend trip destination. While there are many things to do in the park, you’ll likely see the top activities within a weekend. So, it is one of the best weekend trips from Nashville .

The Cave tours are the top activity for visitors to Mammoth Cave NP. Cave tours are held year round although winter tends to be quieter and less active for tours. Generally the interior of the cave stays a modest 54ÂșF regardless of temperatures outside. There are tours for all abilities including accessible tours. Most tours require significant walking however and large backpacks, walking sticks, tripods, and strollers are prohibited. While the rooms you’ll see on most tours in Mammoth are massive, you generally won’t see traditional cave formations like stalactites or stalagmites.

For those who are not caved out, there are several caves adjacent to Mammoth that tour caves with stalactites and stalagmites. Diamond caverns or Crystal caves are great options for those who want to visit these types of caves.

For those who have more time, there is hiking to be enjoyed within the park. There’s easily accessible trails around the visitor center and the south side of the park with views of the forest, springs, and beautiful vistas for sunrise and sunset. Additionally, there’s over 60 miles of backcountry trails in the park network.

The park is located about 95 miles (1.5 hours) from Nashville, Tennessee. The area around the park is not very inhabited, with the small Cave City, KY being the largest town nearby. There’s a hotel in the park, the Lodge at Mammoth Cave which is located close to the visitor center and a perfect spot to stay for those visiting the caves. It’s especially great for those with early morning cave bookings. The lodge has a restaurant, WIFI (although known to be spotty), and comfortable rooms. In terms of restaurants, options are limited around Mammoth Cave. In Cave City, Bucky Bees for BBQ or El Mazatlán for Mexican are good options to try.

13. Asheville, North Carolina

Recommended by Sierra of Island + Alpine

When taking a weekend trip from Nashville, be sure to check out the beautiful and quirky Asheville, North Carolina. Located just under 300 miles apart, this beautiful route should take about 4.5 – 5 hours driving time. Perfect for a weekend getaway, Asheville offers beautiful vistas, outdoor hiking and swimming, delicious restaurants, and historic sites.

Asheville is most known for its location on Blue Ridge Parkway, arguably the most scenic drive in all the United States. While fall is the most popular time to enjoy the drive, spring and summer have plenty to offer as well! The parkway’s entrance is just a few minutes from downtown and visitors can head north toward the peak of Mt. Mitchell, a hike at Crabtree Falls, or the swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain. Heading south on the parkway, brings travelers to the land of waterfalls and swimming holes! Don’t miss Sliding Rock, Moore Cove Falls, and Looking Glass Falls.

After spending one day on the Parkway, the perfect addition to a weekend itinerary is a visit to the Biltmore Estate. Take a guided tour through the estate, partake in some wine tasting, and walk the beautiful grounds and gardens. Visitors can spend the rest of the day walking downtown through the many art galleries, shopping at the Grove Arcade, and perhaps a playful stop at the Asheville Pinball Museum.

Consider grabbing dinner at the Omni Grove Park Inn at their Sunset Terrace . The view is especially beautiful from the patio and their steaks are delicious. If a more casual meal is in order, grab an award-winning burger from The Vault or tacos from White Duck Taco Shop . Whatever you do, don’t miss ordering the biscuit donuts from Biscuit Head at least once.

Staying downtown is always recommended since there are so many restaurants and shops to enjoy. The upscale Hotel Indigo is a great choice for clean, stylish accommodations as well as an amazing on-site breakfast.

If you are a racing buff, you have heard of Bristol.

This is the home to one of the most famous NASCAR circuit tracks and has a lot of history related to the sport.

But if sports are not what will attract you to Bristol, there are plenty of other things to do, such as the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the Paramount Theatre and even take a photograph at the state line dividing Tennessee and Virginia—you can literally be in two states at the same time!

Something your kids will get a kick out of for sure.

The Blackbird Bakery is also a great place to visit when you are at the state border.

Chattanooga is a vibrant city located in Southern Tennessee.

This is a historical city that has a lot to offer to history buffs of all ages .

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is one of the first places you should hit once you have landed in town.

Knoxville is a charming city that sits right next to the Tennessee River.

This is a quiet and quaint city where you can take walks along the riverfront, and also enjoy a picturesque meal here.

Market Square is also a spot in the city that you should visit for some retail therapy and check out the best restaurants in town .

If you are around on the weekend, this downtown market also hosts a farmer’s market.

The Knoxville Zoo, also, I think could make for a great outing with the little ones .

I would also recommend The Muse for the kids, an exciting children’s museum for science.

Dollywood

2700 Dollywood Parks Blvd Pigeon Forge, TN 37863 (800) 365-5996 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

One of the best kid-friendly Tennessee trip ideas is a few days spent in Dollywood.

This is an incredible town with one of the best theme parks in the country that offer water parks, exciting rides, etc.

This is a great destination to enjoy even when you are traveling with a larger group.

The park is owned by singer Dolly Parton so there is a lot of memorabilia that celebrates the singer’s career.

But other than that, the town is also set against the beautiful Smoky Mountain National Park which will give you some of the most stunning views in Tennessee.

If you are looking to vacation in the Tennessee mountains, this is a great place to consider.

It is an incredibly beautiful national park that is home to approximately 100,000 species of flora and fauna.

Some animals you may be able to spot more easily at the national park include the black bear, elks, and even the white-tailed deer.

Sevierville is among the great vacation spots in Tennessee for families.

The first thing that one may think of when they hear Sevierville are the Tanger Outlets.

But in addition to that, there are several other exciting things to do in Sevierville .

For starters, this is where singer Dolly Parton was born so if you are a fan, you may want to check out the statue that commemorates her.

There are also plenty of outdoorsy activities to do with the family in Sevierville like hiking, horseback riding, etc.

Situated in north Tennessee, Clarksville is a city that has a lot of history and culture .

The first thing I recommend doing in Clarksville is paying a visit to the Customs House Museum which is located in a beautiful Victorian-era building from 1898.

The museum will give you a sense of the rich local history, and while the art exhibits are not likely to be of interest to the kids, the model trains are definitely going to be something the kids will be excited by .

The sinkholes in the Dunbar Cave complex are also some natural formations that you should certainly explore.

The Cumberland River that flows through Clarksville also has a rich history that has been articulated in the As the River Flows Museum.

This is also the birthplace of what has come to be known as Rockabilly Music.

Other than the music, there are several attractions that bring people to Jackson, such as the Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum which is named after the engineer.

There is also the incredible Cypress Grove Nature Park that is perfect for getting some fresh air and time in nature.

Apart from exploring this incredible cave system, I would also recommend the Historic Tour and the Dripstones Tour.

Digging into the depths of online reviews, I sought to uncover the truths and experiences of others.

As a result, this list was born – a collection of the real, the authentic, and the unforgettable.

Every place holds a story, and I can’t wait for you to create yours.

  • Value for Money: This is used to evaluate the value for money of every property. Are the room rates reasonable? Are the services, activities, and amenities suitable for the price? I ask myself these questions to rate the value for money provided by the property.
  • Location and Accessibility: This measures how accessible the property is for families. How far is it from the popular family attractions? Is it easily accessible via public transportation? I use these questions to evaluate the property’s location and accessibility.
