Geilo ski resort
Once known as ‘The St Moritz of the North’, Norway’s Geilo ski resort, has been a popular tourist destination since the late 19th century.
Geilo’s skiing really took off in the early 1950s when the first ski lifts were installed. This was the resort’s heyday, when international tourists were drawn by cheap prices and quality powder. While Geilo is no longer the largest fish in the pond, there is still a great selection of descents here for all ability levels.
The resort's well-prepared terrain parks also provide excellent opportunities for snowboarding. In addition, there are 550km (342 miles) of trails for those who prefer cross-country skiing, while the kite-skiing conditions are among the best in the world.
Aesthetically, Geilo is a very pleasant resort, emphasised by its title as a ‘National Park Village’, due to its close proximity to the large national parks of Hardangervidda and Hallingskarvet. It is also easily accessible, located halfway along the main route between Norway’s two largest cities, Oslo and Bergen.
While it may no longer be the ‘St Moritz of the North,’ quality skiing can still be found at Geilo.
Geilo is situated in the mountain region of Hallingdal, in south-central Norway's Buskerud County. It is overlooked by the Hallingskarvet mountain range (the highest peak is the 1,933m/6,342ft Folarskardnuten) and bordered by Hardangervidda, the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe.
Resort Data:
On the slopes.
Geilo's slopes cover the mountains on both sides of the town, which sits in the bottom of the Hallingdal valley. The two sides of the valley are not ski- or lift-linked, so skiers must use the shuttle bus to travel between them, but all the slopes on each side are handily interlinked by lifts and runs criss-crossing the hillsides.
The region can be broken down into roughly 10 different ski areas.
Geiloheisen is one of the largest of these sub-regions, and is linked to the town centre, with a mix of terrain as well as a children's area and snow park. Havsdalen, situated a little further up the slopes on the same side, boasts one of the longest toboggan slopes in Norway, as well as a terrain park with jumps and rails.
The Vestlia sector across the valley has four lifts, runs for all standards and another snowpark with blue, green, red and black lines.
Most of the slopes in the resort are wide and comfortable even for inexperienced skiers, and all the runs are extremely well-prepared and maintained. The lifts here are new, modern and comfortable.
Geilo is also one of Scandinavia’s leading destinations for snowboarders and freestyle skiers thanks to its four excellent terrain parks. Additionally, night skiing is available on six floodlit runs.
There is usually plenty of snow throughout the season, although snow cannons are used to build up the base early in the season in case snowfall is insufficient. The ski season in Geilo runs from November until April.
Several ski schools offer instruction in alpine skiing, telemarking and cross-country skiing, and a number of outlets provide ski hire.

Geilo Norway
Geilo is a long-established ski resort in the top end of Hallingdal (valley) on the railway line between Bergen and Oslo. This means that you can arrive by train - the road alternatives are long but memorable. Geilo Skiheiser runs the ski lifts and is actually a cooperation by 4 different companies, using a single combined lift-pass. Although famous as an alpine ski resort it also has an extensive network of cross-country ski trails, especially around Ustaoset to the west. Further west is Haugastøl and the vast wilderness of Hardangervidda, where the kite-skiers go. There are quite a few hotels in and around the town. There are also many apartments and hyttes (cottages or cabins) available. Geilo is unusual in that it is split up into several different areas, on both the north and south sides of the valley - a total of 7 different parking areas, 2 of them close to the town centre. There is a bus service across the valley, but this makes your choice of accommodation quite important - you may not want to stay at Geilo Fjellandsby (a family-friendly area up the hill on the south side) if you want the black runs of Halstensgård at the west end of the north side of the valley, for example. You can see the differences of each area in the ski centre pages (links below) on each part of the resort.

Norways Best Ski Resort
Geilo takes triple victory in the world ski awards, geilo has every reason to celebrate after an impressive triple victory at this year's world ski awards in kitzbuhel, austria. the alpine destination won awards in three categories: "norway's best ski resort", as well as "norway's best ski hotel" awarded to vestlia resort, and "norway's best ski chalet" awarded to havsdalsgrenda. geilo has now won "norway's best ski resort" five times in a row since 2019., press release.
In the World Ski Awards, it is the public, together with tour operators, travel agencies and suppliers who vote for the best ski destinations and accommodation in Norway and the rest of Europe. The organizers say that "The prize is awarded to Geilo for its warm hospitality, a wide selection of accommodation, focus on local food culture and high quality." Since 2017, large investments have been made in modernizing the alpine product, which is also highlighted in particular in the justification.
Heidi Stevning, general manager of Visit Geilo, expresses her gratitude for the victory: "Thank you very much to everyone who voted for us. It is a great honor for all of us that Geilo once again comes out on top in this voting, and extra great that we also receive an award for two of our accommodation companies. We have a good community here at Geilo, and the cooperation between our companies has really strengthened us as a comprehensive alpine and holiday destination. The whole of Geilo is grateful for the recognition from the World Ski Awards, and this inspires to continue to offer first-class winter experiences for all visitors. The triple win underlines Geilo's unique appeal as a ski resort", says Stevning.
Good times for Geilo
Geilo has strengthened its position as one of Norway's leading ski destinations in recent years, both at home and abroad. The total product with the best alpine experience, miles of cross-country skiing trails, a wide selection of accommodation and activities and natural proximity to the national parks Hallingskarvet and Hardangervidda attracts more and more guests to the mountain village. Kevin Eikrehagen, general manager of SkiGeilo, is proud that Geilo has been awarded the award: "Five years in a row is really something we are proud of! There are an incredible number of good people working both in Team SkiGeilo and at the rest of Geilo. They stand up every day with one focus in mind, delivering a good guest experience for those who visit us. This creates a positive spiral that benefits everyone, and I am incredibly proud to be a part of this." "The ski center has made major investments both in new lifts, snowmaking equipment and guest experience since 2017. The aim is to lift Geilo back as the Nordic region's leading mountain destination. - There are many good mountain destinations in Norway, all of which can offer much of the same. That is why we invest extra on hosting, which is also part of us here at Geilo. We have been involved in tourism since the 19th century, so we have good experience in good guest experiences. Our task now is to continue to develop Geilo's potential further. We have a good collaboration between the ski centre, the accommodation companies, local food producers and activity providers, and are all engaged in creating value for the guest who visits us", concludes Eikrehagen.
