Rampton-based Gem Mini Travel operate two rather anonymous-looking former Metroline President-bodied Tridents on workings to Tuxford Academy. On a stunning if slightly nippy March morning, LT02ZZW is seen heading south from Ragnall with the 736 from Church Laneham, Dunham, and Marnham. This run covers plenty of territory lacking a conventional bus service - the depicted location included - and has a recent operational lineage of Gem, Stagecoach, Gem, Marshalls, Veolia.

Villages in the area east of Retford towards the River Trent are linked by Gem Mini Travel's demand-responsive 190 which follows a semi-fixed route between the town and Tuxford. In practice, the off-peak four northbound and three southbound journeys seem to follow the main roads between the two settlements, branching off to serve various villages as dictated by bookings. These workings are complemented by two AM peak workings to and three PM peak workings from Retford which follow a set route. The service was introduced in August 2014 as a council cost-cutting replacement for timetabled services 89 and 90, latterly operated by TM Travel.

Various Solos have been used on the route since its inception, and until recently the regular allocation was ex demonstrator short Citaro which I regrettably neglected to photograph until it was too late. Present vehicle of choice appears to be Optare Solo M780 YJ05JXN which was purchased towards the end of last year having been previously operated by Sheffield Community Transport. The vehicle is seen here climbing out of the Trent valley on the final leg of its journey to Tuxford with the 10:15 from Retford. Cottam power station, which closed last September, is visible to the right of the frame. Given that the vehicle was running a good 20 minutes ahead of its suggested schedule, I would assume that bookings were scarce this morning.

Gem Mini Travel Optare Solo M780 YJ05JXM seen as it heads through Saundby with the 07:50 Gainsborough-Retford 195.

The 195 operates an AM and PM peak journey to Retford and an AM peak and two PM peak journeys to Gainsborough Mon-Sat. Three of the journeys run via Leverton, whilst the morning working to and first afternoon journey from Retford do not and instead run direct between North Wheatley and Clarborough. More frequent journeys between Retford and Gainsborough are provided by Stagecoach's 95 and 97. Gem have operated the 195 since August 2014 when it was won on contract alongside the 190 having followed a similar operational pattern featuring Veolia and TM Travel. These are currently Gem's only public service workings, though this will change next month when the company takes on a couple of services requiring an operator ahead of the closure of Travel Wright.

And finally - not a service with changes, just something a bit different to end on!

The Bradfield circular routes, consisting of the anti-clockwise 61 and clockwise 62, are rare examples of rural services which retain evening and Sunday services. For future reference, today was a Sunday, and at such times the two vehicle hourly service maintained across both routes Mon-Sat daytimes is reduced to a single vehicle operating each route every two hours. Powells won the SYPTE contract to operate these routes ahead of September 2019, replacing TM Travel. The vehicle is one of nine ex Malta SRs to have been drafted in to cover SYPTE contracts gained over the past 18 months, with most of these having spent time on hire to other operators between leaving Malta in 2015 and arriving at Powells. The Powells fleet has recently been renumbered into the HCT group scheme, and the vehicle depicted previously carried the number 9 in the Powells scheme which was retained for the first two-and-a-half-or-so years of HCT ownership.

GEM mini TRAVEL's latest coach is this Mercedes Tourismo, an ex Clarkes Of London coach, that has now been in the GEM fleet for around 6 weeks. It is seen here on a school outing to Abbey Farm at Woodhall Spa.

Another new addition to the GEM mini TRAVEL fleet is Optare Solo YJ05 JXN. This bus was originally with Sheffield Community Transport, and during it's time there was named 'Mi Amigo', in memory of the 10 airmen aboard the Flying Fortress, 'Mi Amigo' which crashed in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield in February 1944, killing all 10 airmen. At present, there is still a commemorative plaque on the back of the drivers cab.
