About GEORGE LOPEZ

George Lopez’s illustrious and multi-faceted career encompasses television, film, standup comedy, and late-night television.

Like many African Americans comedians before him, George Lopez broke ground for Latino comics by embracing his ethnicity and confronting racial stereotypes head on. He is currently performing stand up in arenas across the country on his OMG Hi! Comedy Tour, through 2022. His original comedy special We’ll Do It For Half for Netflix premiered globally in the summer of 2020. Prior to that, Lopez joined Eddie Griffin, D.L. Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer onstage for The Comedy Get Down which inspired a scripted comedy series based on the tour for BET. In 2017, Lopez completed a nationwide tour for The Wall World.

Lopez has four HBO specials to his credit: The Wall (2017), It’s Not Me, It’s You (2012), Tall, Dark and Chicano (2009) which was also GRAMMY nominated for Best Comedy Album, and America's Mexican (2007). He performed as part of HBO and TBS's Comic Relief 2006. His acclaimed comedy concert, Why You Crying?, debuted on Showtime in 2004. He released his third standup CD, El Mas Chingon, in 2006, which also earned Lopez his second GRAMMY nomination in the category of Best Comedy Album. In 2004, he was nominated for a GRAMMY in the same category for his CD Team Leader.

On television, Lopez produced and starred in Lopez, a semi-autobiographical single camera sitcom for two seasons on TV Land. The series explored his struggle between two worlds and the crises that are often of his own making. In 2014, Lopez co-created and starred in the multi-camera ensemble comedy Saint George for FX. He hosted TBS’ inaugural late night talk show, Lopez Tonight, for two seasons. It represented Lopez's return to series television after co-creating, writing, producing, and starring in Warner Bros. Television's groundbreaking hit television sitcom George Lopez, which ran for six seasons on ABC. The show remains a hit with viewers in syndication on both broadcast stations and cable tv’s Nick at Nite, ranking as one of the top-rated shows on the network in addition to being one of the top 5 comedies and top 20 weekly programs in syndication.

He has hosted the latin Grammy Awards twice and co-hosted the Emmy Awards in 2003.

In film, Lopez most recently starred in Walking with Herb opposite Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell. The faith-based story was inspired by Joe S. Bullock’s novel of the same name. He appeared in IFC Films’ modern-day Western No Man’s Land opposite Frank Grillo, Jake Allyn and Andie MacDowell, and received high praise for the performance. Other feature films include the crime thriller, The Tax Collector with Shia LaBeouf, El Chicano alongside Raúl Castillo, Aimee Garcia, and Emilio Rivera, the box-office romantic comedy hit Valentine's Day directed by Garry Marshall, River Runs Red, Swing Vote,The Spy Next Door with Jackie Chan, The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Henry Poole Is Here and Balls of Fury, Real Women Have Curves and Ken Loach’s acclaimed drama, Bread and Roses . He starred and produced the inspirational drama, Spare Parts, based on a true story about four undocumented Mexican-American teenagers from Phoenix who team up to build an underwater robot that wins the national robotics competition. An icon and advocate for Latinos’ move into the mainstream, Lopez was the focus of the award-winning documentary Brown is the New Green: George Lopez and the American Dream as he struggles to represent Latinos in a manner true to their realities and aspirations. Lopez was the voice for a series of characters in a string of animated blockbuster films including Zook in Gnome Alone, Rafael in Rio and Rio 2 along with Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, Thurman in Escape from Planet Earth opposite Jane Lynch and Sofia Vergara, Grouchy Smurf in The Smurfs 1 and 2, Cats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite, and The Beverly Hills Chihuahua 1, 2, and 3.

In May 2004, Lopez’s autobiography, Why You Crying?, entered The New York Times Bestsellers Top 20 List. The book was co-written by Emmy winning writer and sportscaster Armen Keteyian. Lopez released his second memoir in 2013, I’m Not Gonna Lie And Other Lies You Tell When You Turn 50, in which he shares the unabashed and hilarious truth about aging – as only he can. In 2005, Time Magazine named him one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America and the Harris Poll named him one of the Top Ten Favorite Television Personalities. The following year, Lopez received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

george lopez comedy tour 2023

Stand-up comedian and actor George Lopez has been performing live shows for decades, with his first attempt right before graduating from San Fernando High School in 1979.

For Lopez, comedy became an outlet for exploring the Mexican-American experience with humor, which served as a pivotal stepping stone to launch his acting career and become the first Mexican-American to host an English-language late night show, “Lopez Tonight.”

“When you can do stand-up on a level that very few comedians have done (then go into) the sitcom, the talk show and now the show with my daughter, all things that are going good, why would you want to change anything in the mix,” Lopez said during a recent phone interview.

He’s getting back to his stand-up roots and hitting the stage at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio on Saturday, April 6, where his show will focus on his aging and some of the baggage that comes with it.

“I think (my show) has always been kind of reminiscent of the backyard cookout,” he said. “Now that I’m getting older and viejito (little old man), I talk about not being able to see with my mouth closed, the medicine, looking at everything that you eat, carrying an EpiPen and all those things that were so foreign, but that’s the how life is lived now.”

Although Lopez’s material has often utilized his Latino identity with a comedic undertone, in his early days, his jokes didn’t have the personal touch that has become a staple of his work.

“In the early ’90s, somebody said to me, ‘If I watched you, there’s nothing really about what you’re talking about that actually tells me anything about your personal life; if you’re married, I don’t know if you have a mom and dad, what your politics are,’ and I thought that was a pretty good constructive criticism of my stand-up at that time,” he said.

To answer that criticism, Lopez began looking for comical figures within his family, which brought him to his grandmother, who had a funny and adversarial personality. She’d often joke with Lopez about being funnier than him and skipping weddings if she had already gone to the first one of the spouses. The advice helped Lopez look at his family and the funny elements in Latino culture he could make light of, such as drinking 7-Up as a medical remedy or the makeshift extension cord leashes he’d see on dogs.

“I started to look at all the stuff that was in my world, and it just became the stuff that people gravitated toward,” Lopez said.

Latino representation has been a mission of Lopez’s work throughout his career, despite a media landscape that’s struggled to tell those stories and underrepresents Latinos more broadly.

A University of California, Los Angeles study by the Entertainment & Media Research Initiative released a study last year titled “Hollywood Diversity Report 2023: Exclusivity in Progress ,” which examined diverse casting in 521 live-action, scripted television shows during the 2021-2022 season.

The study found that Latinos made up 6.1 percent of leads in broadcast shows, 3.6 percent of leads in cable shows, and 4.3 percent of leads in digital shows despite Latinos making up 19% of the population in the U.S. While the numbers aren’t anywhere near where Lopez would like to see them, he said that some progress has been made throughout the years.

“When I started my first show in 2002, Eva Longoria and America Ferrera were just starting, and there was no Eva Mendes or Gina Rodriguez, and directors like Robert Rodriguez were also just starting,” he said. “I see it getting better. Is it ever going to be a level playing field? No, but in 20 years, you do want to see it getting better than it is now, but it’s also hard for everybody. When you don’t come from a theatre or comedic background, you have to scrape and find stuff, so it’s so difficult to make it that many people just stopped (trying) it.”

Lopez encountered some of those obstacles early on when trying to pitch his first television show, “George Lopez,” which eventually got picked up by the ABC network and ran for 120 episodes over six seasons. In a 2006 People Magazine interview , he praised actress and longtime friend Sandra Bullock for helping make his show a reality when his pitches weren’t getting anywhere in Hollywood. Bullock would later join the series as an executive producer.

“George Lopez” is a sitcom where he stars as a fictionalized version of himself raising a family in Los Angeles and touches on themes of class and race. Some featured aspects from his real life included his best friend Ernie (same name in the show) and even some places he worked and was fired from.

“I used to work at this place called Powers Book Publishing, run by this guy named Melvin Powers, who used to think he was a big shot. I even used his name (in the show), and one day, they come in with a client, and he said, ‘Hey, how’s it going George?’ and I said, ‘Pretty good Melvin.’ I didn’t call him Mr. Powers, and the way he looked at me, I thought, ‘Oh man, he’s going to fire me,’ and he did that day,” Lopez said. “I found success in not trying to be an astronaut, but in trying just to keep the show grounded, and there’s really nobody that says ‘I don’t get what they’re saying,’ and that is as big an accomplishment.”

The comedian’s latest television venture is the NBC network sitcom, “Lopez vs. Lopez,” about a blue-collar family featuring his real-life daughter, Mayan Lopez. Season two will premiere on Tuesday, April 2. He said that although there may be some slight overlaps with his previous sitcom, this one delves into more contemporary topics, such as millennial life decisions and other generational aspects that his daughter’s character explores.

“Mayan Lopez has been funny her whole life,” he said. “Every day, I look at her at some point when we’re working. I see her as a five-year-old girl, a seven-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old girl because that’s just the way my mind works. It’s hard for me sometimes to believe that the little girl who I cut her cord over in the hospital is that young lady who’s on the television show and posters with me. It’s really beyond my imagination.”

While his previous sitcom and new one seek to represent a Latino experience, other aspects are universally appealing to audiences no matter their background, which Lopez attributes to the talent of the writers’ room.

“On the show that we have right now, we have a lot of Latina writers; they’re younger, we have people who are gay, and from every facet of everyday life,” he said. “They can write on all the shows and not just the ones that have to do with an alternate life. These stories are everybody’s story. The friction between parents and their kids and getting older hasn’t changed. I’m not trying to make everybody happy, and I’m not even worried about who’s laughing. I’ve just had a long enough career where those are the things that I shouldn’t have to worry about anymore.”

'Lopez vs. Lopez' Is Debunking The Idea That All Latinos Are The Same

Marilyn La Jeunesse

On Assignment For HuffPost

George Lopez and Mayan Lopez on Episode 2 of Season 2 of "Lopez vs. Lopez."

Mayan Lopez had to twerk the truth .

In August 2020, the up-and-coming comedy star posted a video reaction on TikTok with the truth about her parents’ divorce. While upside down and popping her booty to the music, she revealed that her parents — comedy icon George Lopez and producer Ann Serrano — ended their marriage because George cheated.

When Mayan posted the lighthearted video, she never expected it to catch the attention of director Debby Wolfe. Two years later, Mayan’s TikTok became the basis of hit NBC sitcom “ Lopez vs. Lopez ,” in which an estranged father and daughter reunite under one roof.

“Lopez vs. Lopez” is equal parts comedy and poignant commentary on the complexities of family, as the Lopezes learn how to forgive each other for the past. The series tackles not only stigmatized topics in the Latinx community like mental health and therapy, but also navigates discussions regarding racism and cultural appropriation in ways that are approachable for a broader audience.

“I really want ‘Lopez vs Lopez’ to not only be accessible and relatable to everybody, but I see it as a love letter to the Latinx community and these issues that don’t always get the spotlight in television and media,” Mayan tells HuffPost. “I always want people to watch this show and to be able to look at their family next to each other and start a conversation.”

“Lopez vs. Lopez” is also the only Latino-led show on prime-time TV. Wolfe is the first Latina to be the co-creator and showrunner of a network sitcom, her reps confirm. And she is one of only two Latinas to ever have a sitcom on network television.

“It’s kind of crazy because it’s 2024,” Wolfe says. “It’s really disheartening to see so many great Latine shows not getting the chance to get more seasons and build an audience and develop.”

In the past two years, Latinx-led shows like Netflix ’s “Gentefied,” HBO Max’s “Gordita Chronicles,” and Hulu’s “This Fool” were just some of the many that were canceled. (“Gordita Chronicles” was recently picked up for a second season by streamer Tubi, Deadline reported.) While there are still shows with Latina leads, like Netflix’s “Griselda” and “Queen of the South,” these shows focus on drugs and gangs, doing little to push back on stereotypes.

Beyond delving into stigmatized topics like generational trauma and alcoholism, “Lopez vs. Lopez” is putting different Latinx experiences at the forefront. From highlighting the intricacies of being a Latinx person who doesn’t speak Spanish to feeling alienated in majority-white spaces, the show aims to represent authentic aspects of Latinidad that are rarely portrayed onscreen. The show even delves into the nuances of raising a biracial child and the complexity of balancing an appreciation for both cultures while navigating the expectations of both society and family.

“We’re just telling real stories,” Wolfe said. “It’s resonating with people and people are talking about it and sort of changing their perspective on how they see Latines walking through the world. We’re not a stereotype. We’re diverse people with complicated feelings and who are not unlike your family.”

Wolfe said she helps train the lower-level writers in her writer’s room to be showrunners and encourages them to apply for writing trade programs. The “Lopez vs. Lopez” team has also had aspiring female directors shadow the in-house directors and hired Latine crew members behind-the-scenes.

“I don’t want people to stay with me,” Wolfe said. “I want people to grow and rise and be undeniable forces out in the world, so they can go out and pitch their own diverse projects and further the representation of Latines on screen.”

Clockwise from top left: Selenis Leyva, George Lopez, Al Madrigal, Debby Wolfe, Mayan Lopez and Matt Shively of NBC's "Lopez vs. Lopez" at the 2024 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena, California.

In addition to being underrepresented on screen — a 2023 report found that of the nearly 1,000 shows produced and aired by August 2023, only 33 of them featured a Latinx lead — Latinxs in Hollywood have been typecast as criminals or menial laborers, or are highly sexualized. “Lopez vs. Lopez” not only uplifts Latinx creatives on and off screen, but is an effort to dispel the idea that Latinx people are the same.

“I think the biggest thing our industry really fails to recognize is that Latine people are not a monolith. We come from different countries. We speak Spanish in different ways. We have varying values and traditions,” Wolfe explained. “I think society wants to put us in a box. There’s definitely a lack of education, and I hope that by being specific on the show, we are entertaining, but we’re also educating and we’re telling our stories.”

“I see us as breaking those stereotypes,” Mayan added. “Showing that [Latinos] can be in positions of power and don’t always have accents. Both my mom and my dad for the last 35 years have really fought to not perpetuate that stereotype. And that is definitely something that has passed on to me.”

“Lopez vs. Lopez” also makes an active effort to acknowledge and celebrate Afro-Latinx heritage on the show. By casting Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” star Selenis Leyva in the role of Rosie, Mayan’s mother, the series provided a platform for an often overlooked identity in the Latinx community.

“[We’re] showing our community, as much as it’s showing mainstream America, that Latinos — we look really different. A lot of times we, in the Latino community, gravitate towards the celebration of our Spaniard bloodline and we don’t really acknowledge the Afro bloodline that we have,” Leyva told HuffPost.

Selenis Leyva (left) as Rosie and Brice Gonzalez as Chance on "Lopez vs. Lopez."

Leyva’s character is a single mother who is not only navigating her divorce and questions of forgiveness, but also learning to embrace her individuality and honor her success as an entrepreneur. It balances the more serious topics in the show with positive Latinx experiences. “

“We’re showing a Latina mom — a grandmother at that — and also a business owner,” Leyva said. “I love that we are showing everyone that Latinas, especially women after the age of 40, can still be sexy, smart, and in control. So for me, this is a really exciting project because I feel like I am representing a lot of women that are not usually celebrated or seen on TV.”

Her character also challenges the idea of what motherhood looks like in a culture that is rooted in tradition. Leyva said that audiences are trained to see mothers as sort of asexual and one-dimensional once they have their children. But not on “Lopez vs. Lopez.”

“They haven’t taken her identity as a woman away,” Leyva said of her character. “It’s about time that we start seeing Latinas as full-rounded women. And that to me is the most exciting part of playing Rosie.”

While authentic Latinx representation is the focal point of “Lopez vs. Lopez,” Wolfe, Leyva and Mayan all stressed that the show was created for everyone to enjoy.

“[Our onscreen family] just happens to be Latino; our issues are the same that any other family would go through,” Mayan said. “And being really the only show on network television with the majority Latin cast, I think we have a responsibility that we take quite seriously to share our stories and to inspire other projects and really integrate the space with even more stories and even more projects for a Latino community.”

“We’ve been taught that there’s only room for one of us and that the opportunities are few and far in between, but I always say we have to start making more room,” Leyva added, when asked about the frequent cancellations of Latinx-focused shows. “I think that if we hold on to that kind of energy more and support shows that reflect us, that look like us, that sound like us, we would have fewer cancellations. We would be sending a message saying, no, we demand to be seen. We demand to be heard.”

“Lopez vs. Lopez” Season 2 premieres Tuesday on NBC.

Broadway in Columbus announces its 2024-25 season, including '& Juliet,' 'MJ the Musical'

Roman Banks as ‘MJ’ and cast of the national tour of “MJ: The Musical."

Musicals about the moonwalking King of Pop, a reimagined Shakespeare heroine, singer-songwriter Neil Diamond , a prematurely-old teenage girl and a high-flying boy who never grew up will tour Columbus next season.

Current Broadway hits such as “MJ the Musical,” “& Juliet,” “A Beautiful Noise” and “Kimberly Akimbo” will enliven PNC Broadway in Columbus’ 2024-2025 season.

“It’s something for everybody, a good mix of shows,” said Chad Whittington, president and CEO of the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) , which presents the national tours.

“Variety defines this great season, with new products coming from Broadway, including five Columbus premieres and family favorites,” Whittington said.

The value of revivals

Rounding out the 2024-2025 subscription series is a touring-only revival of “ Peter Pan ,” an encore run of “ Hamilton ” and the recent first Broadway revival of “Funny Girl,” which catapulted Barbra Streisand to stardom playing a comic cut-up who imagines herself “the greatest star... by far.”

“It’s important to have revivals each season... an opportunity to see the great shows from the past — sometimes tweaked to be relevant — that reflect the evolution of our society and connect us with the deep history of Broadway,” Whittington said.

Jukebox hits and family favorites

Of the four newer musicals visiting Columbus for the first time, only “ Kimberly Akimbo ” boasts an original score, while “A Beautiful Noise,” “& Juliet” and “MJ The Musical” have “jukebox” scores compiled from older Top-40 songs and composer’s catalogs.

“Talking about jukebox musicals leading the series is difficult for purists to hear, but that’s where the audience is right now,” Whittington said.

Family favorites include “Peter Pan” and an encore run of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” a non-subscription option.

“We put ‘Peter Pan’ on the season specifically for families... For us, introducing new audiences to Broadway at a young age is important, and family shows give us the opportunity to do that,” Whittington said.

How Broadway matters

Five of the seven subscription shows are still on Broadway: “& Juliet, “A Beautiful Noise,” “Hamilton,” “MJ the Musical” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” the top 2023 Tony winner with five awards including best musical, book and score.

“There’s an awareness on social media when a show is a Broadway hit, but even more important is how long it runs. Shows lasting only a few months have a harder time doing well on tour,” Whittington said.

More: 'Jersey Boys,' 'Legally Blonde,' 'Nine' among 2024-25 Short North Stage lineup

Also returning as a non-subscription option: “The Book of Mormon,” approaching 5,000 performances on Broadway after virtually sweeping the 2011 Tony awards.

“We tend to bring back shows that have a long life and were hugely popular during their first runs,” Whittington said.

‘Some shows people see once, and that’s enough. These are shows people tell us, on our audience surveys, they want to see again,” he said.

What tours are set for fall?

Except where noted, all shows (*non-subscription) will be performed at the Ohio Theatre, 39 E. State St.

• “MJ: The Musical” (Sept. 10-15): The dance-oriented musical pays tribute to Michael Jackson’s creativity and collaborative spirit. Conceived by Tony-winning director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon (“An American in Paris”), and Pulitzer-winner Lynn Nottage (“Ruined,” “Sweat”), the show centers on the making of Jackson’s 1992 “Dangerous World” tour.\

‘’’MJ’ is more than just about Jackson’s music. It has great music and great dancing, but also a really strong story,” Whittington said.

• “The Book of Mormon” (*Oct. 8-13):   Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (“South Park”) and Robert Lopez (“Avenue Q”), the Tony-winning musical comedy returns for its fourth run after 2014, 2016 and 2018. The story follows a naïve pair of Mormon missionaries from Utah to Uganda as their religious beliefs are tested.

Family shows set for winter

• “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Dec. 3-8, Palace Theatre, 34 W. Broad St.): The one-act holiday musical, which had a 2015 run here, brings to life the cartoonish world of Dr. Seuss in adapting the book and animated 1966 TV special about the green-hued Grinch’s scheme to spoil the holiday for Whoville residents.

• “Peter Pan” (Jan. 14-19): Newly adapted by playwright Larissa FastHorse, the 1954 musical is based on J.M. Barrie’s play about Peter Pan and sidekick Tinker Bell taking the Darling children on a magical journey to Neverland. Among the iconic songs: “I’m Flying” and “I Won’t Grow Up.”

Strong women enhance 2025 season

• “& Juliet” (Feb. 18-23): Nominated for nine 2023 Tony awards, the musical by Emmy-winning writer David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”) imagines Juliet getting a second chance.

“What if Juliet decides that losing Romeo doesn’t mean she has to lose her life? Shakespeare’s play is flipped on its head in this story about finding your way,” Whittington said.

The score highlights songwriter/producer Max Martin’s Top-40 songs, including “Blow,” “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” “Domino,” “One More Try,” “Oops!... I Did It Again” and “Roar.”

“You’ll recognize hit after hit, which reflects the breadth of singers Martin has written for,” Whittington said.

More: Jon Batiste coming to Columbus to participate in a musical residency with ProMusica

• “Funny Girl” (March 25-30): With Harvey Fierstein (“La Cage aux Folles”) updating the book for the first Broadway revival, the musical charts the life of Fanny Brice, whose knack for comedy and chutzpah propelled her to Ziegfeld Follies stardom. Jule Styne and Bob Merrill’s score includes “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star” and “People.”

What completes the season?

• “A Beautiful Noise” (April 22-27, 2025): Created with Neil Diamond, the bio-musical charts Diamond’s rise from a Brooklyn kid to a chart-topping pop-rock singer-songwriter who sold 120 million albums.

Among the songs: “America,” “Cherry, Cherry,” “Hello Again,” “Kentucky Woman,” “Solitary Man” and “Sweet Caroline.”

• “Kimberly Akimbo” (June 3-8, 2025): Author-lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire (“Shrek”) and composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home”) based the coming-of-age musical on Lindsay-Abaire’s play of the same title about the struggle for happiness of a 16-year-old girl with a rare genetic condition prematurely aging her.

“It’s about the angst and complications for kids who might not fit in... You fall in love with all the kids in this really endearing show, which appeals to theater-lovers with a new score and a mostly-teenage cast,” Whittington said.

• “Hamilton” (July 8-20, 2025): Lin Manuel Miranda’s Pulitzer-winning musical drama, returning here for its third multi-week run after 2019 and 2022, focuses on Alexander Hamilton, George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War.

How eight beloved stand-up comics got their starts

To celebrate april fool’s day, we asked comedians including george lopez, margaret cho and patton oswalt about their early efforts to make audiences laugh.

george lopez comedy tour 2023

Every comedian who’s ever made you laugh till you cried had to start somewhere, and that somewhere was usually a daunting place: behind a microphone on a dimly lit comedy club stage, facing a room full of people who’ve come to be entertained. To honor April Fools’ Day — when everyone is hilarious, or subjected to someone who thinks they are — we asked eight comedians to tell us about their early stand-up experiences. Some were blessed with beginner’s luck, while others bombed so thoroughly that they have no memory of the experience. But they all had to put themselves out there to find out what they were good at — or what they could get good at.

Here’s what they had to say. Interviews have been edited for length and clarity.

George Lopez

Less than two weeks before his high school graduation, Lopez, 62, went onstage for the first time.

It was June 4, 1979. Lopez and a friend had heard about a local kid who performed at the Comedy Store in Westwood, Calif. After some encouragement, Lopez made the journey and waited two hours for his three-minute slot. He got a stranger to buy him some wine and used a pen to shove the cork into the bottle so he could drink it.

At first, it was tough going for the “Lopez vs Lopez” actor. “And then toward the end of the three minutes, I nailed a couple pretty good ones,” he said. “So I think I did decent. I mean, it wasn’t silent. I would say 40 percent of 100. For somebody that was scared of everything. I’m not sure why, not only did I go that first time, but kept going. I still haven’t figured that out.”

Of that first experience, Lopez said, “I’m so proud of the fact that I went up there once. It changed my life from black-and-white to color.”

Patton Oswalt

Oswalt, 55, began his stand-up career on July 18, 1988, at a Washington comedy club. The 19-year-old, who had just finished his freshman year at William & Mary, prepared for his stage debut by watching lots of other open mic performers. As for material, he relied on instinct. “I just kind of wrote what I thought was a funny set and then went up and completely ate it,” said Patton.

“ What I realized years later was the importance of my first open mic wasn’t to go up and get laughs,” said the comedian and actor, who recently starred in Apple TV Plus’s “Manhunt.” “It was to go up and get over the fear and overthinking about going onstage.”

That first stand-up experience is a blank, Oswalt says now, he only remembers that the audience was not overwhelmed. Nonetheless, his time onstage sparked an epiphany. “I got no positive feedback from going onstage, but I look back at a thing that gave me no positive feedback [and] I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” he said.

What did he take away from it? “This is probably what I should do with my life.”

Gabriel Iglesias

The first time Iglesias, 47, did stand-up he was 10 years old. He went onstage during a school talent show and wowed the auditorium with impressions of cartoon characters. A decade after his childhood debut, Iglesias gave stand-up a real go when a local event was looking for a host. It was April 10, 1997, at a Best Western hotel bar in Long Beach, Calif.

He experienced a roller coaster of emotions, he said, ranging from total fear to euphoria when he made the audience laugh. That taste of stand-up prompted Iglesias to quit his well-paying cellphone salesman job.

“I’m an attention whore. I love attention. I love being up in front of people,” he said. “I was always the chubby kid. I was always the one that didn’t get picked in sports. I was always the one who had just one friend. So to get that level of attention, it’s an incredible feeling of acceptance that you crave and you want when you don’t get it.”

Margaret Cho

Cho, 55, began doing stand-up in her early teens at the San Francisco School of the Arts. Her theater teacher had students perform sketches and skits for the class, and in time they graduated from the classroom to the local public access TV station. She also signed the kids up for open-mic nights, where Cho was teamed with Sam Rockwell — yes, that Sam Rockwell. Between gigs, she performed solo at the comedy club above her parents’ bookstore.

They were juvenile jokes and skits, Cho said, but they gave her a head start. And an incentive to do her best: The club sold tomatoes for patrons to lob at unfunny comedians. Thankfully, she was never on the receiving end of one.

“[Stand-up] is an art form that will take a lifetime to really master,” Cho said, “that you’re continually learning and growing as an artist. And I think that [it’s] something that you never quite figure out. Every audience is different and every experience is different.”

Natasha Leggero

Before her first stand-up set, Leggero, 50, locked herself in her studio apartment for two days. She refused to see anyone, spending every waking minute writing pages and pages of material. The two years of comedy classes, half a Xanax and half a glass of wine paid off when she was engulfed in laughter at the Belly Room at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood in 2002.

“Everyone was just laughing on cue at the things that I was saying. It was almost like the laughter was hitting me like waves. It truly was an out-of-body experience, and it was just like these waves coming over me. And then it would start back up again,” she said.

The next time she did stand-up, she was hit with waves of negativity instead. She may have called the bar and/or its patrons smelly. “I kind of crawled offstage. But I do remember coming home and just kind of falling face-flat on my bed and just realizing this is going to take a while,” she said. “But also because the first one was so great, I wanted to keep going.”

Chelsea Peretti

Peretti, 46, had known she was funny since the eighth grade. So when she got an opportunity to do stand-up at the Parkside Lounge in New York’s East Village in the early 2000s, she took it — and bombed.

“I think I just was literally like, no, no, no, no, no, I didn’t do well,” she said of that first time. Rather than discouraging her, the experience made her more determined. “It’s like a desire to kind of figure out the game — and how to have a win.”

Peretti said her background in stand-up was useful when writing and directing her feature film, “First Time Female Director.” Originally, the script began further into the narrative, but Peretti understood that some jokes only work when you know the backstory.

“I feel like when you’re first starting out, so much of it is figuring out who you are and how to communicate it quickly to people in a way that gets a laugh and kind of gets them oriented right out of the gate,” she said.

David Cross

The week before his 18th birthday, Cross, 59, graced the audiences of a suburban Atlanta Punchline with a set so “bizarrely amazing” that “if you scripted it and saw it in a movie, you’d be like, ‘All right, that’s a bit over the top.’”

Cross wasn’t nervous about the performance, he was anxious to get onstage — and then anxious to do it again.

“ I came offstage and I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m amazing. I’m a natural. I should probably try to get on “The Tonight Show” tomorrow,’” Cross said. “And then more expectedly and more realistically the next, I don’t know, 15 sets I did I bombed. As I should’ve — that’s what’s meant to happen in the first place.”

Jim Gaffigan

Gaffigan, 57, was on his way to being your funny uncle when he first did stand-up in “1989 or 1990” at the Duplex in New York’s West Village. At the time, he had a degree from Georgetown University, a stable ad agency job and a fear of public speaking. Gaffigan decided to take an improv class to work on that last one.

“I remember it very vividly because … it was one of those things where it felt immediately familiar,” said Gaffigan. “There was something about that initial time onstage where I didn’t know if I was going to be a comedian, but I knew that I was going to continue doing this. It was like an itch had been scratched.” Then he bombed for the next six months.

That first performance was less than a year after his mom died. The act of creating and performing his own comedy felt and still feels cleansing, he said. “No matter if I’m in a really sad place or in a really high place, it moderates me. It’s this balancing thing for my emotions and, simultaneously, it’s this moment of empowerment.”
