Best time to visit germany.

July and August are the busiest months for tourists in   Europe , so outside of these times you will generally encounter fewer tourists.

May, June and September are considered pleasant times to travel as there are less crowds and the climate is comfortable. During these months, beer gardens and cafes bustle at all hours, outdoor events and festivals enliven cities and villages and hiking, cycling and swimming are popular pursuits.

Snow usually starts to fall in December, and winter travel to Germany is becoming increasingly popular, especially to the ski areas in the Bavarian Alps.

Autumn is the optimal time to enjoy romantic Germany. The foliage is turning golden and the climate is still agreeably mild for getting out and about.

Geography and environment

Located in Central Europe, Germany is bordered by:

  • Switzerland
  • Netherlands
  • Czech Republic

The terrain found in the north of Germany is relatively flat, with the topography growing increasingly hilly moving south.

Southern Germany is characterised by mountain ranges and thick forest, with the Black Forest (on the French border) and the Bavarian Forest (on the Czech border) being the most well known forests in the south.

Germany has small pockets of alpine terrain with the Alps being Germany's highest mountains.

Top 3 contemporary art spots of Berlin

Centrally located and well-serviced by several public transport hubs, historic Mitte is one of the easiest places to view Berlin's killer art scene. See run-down buildings that have been transformed into galleries and hotels, wander down gritty laneways full of vibrant graffiti and feel the urban buzz of Berlin.

2. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

Berlin's counter-culture is evident in the streets of this East Berlin borough, which is full of an eclectic range of hip galleries, innovative hotels, bohemian bars and vintage flea markets. This is the perfect place to gallery-hop, take snapshots and view the handiwork of some of the world's most iconic street artists.

3. Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery

After the triumphant fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 this section of the wall was adorned with colourful paintings and political murals, many reflecting the tone of this iconic time in Germany's history. A visit here reveals history in a way that no museum or book can.

Customizable Itinerary

Frankfurt – the city of frankfurt.

Your plane will ascend into the contemporary architecture of Frankfurt, a city that embodies modernity with glinting skyscrapers made of glass, steel, and concrete. The city holds the title of Germany’s most important commercial and economic center, with a skyline dominated by high-rises in the banking district. Your private transfer will meet you at the baggage claim of the Frankfurt Airport and escort you to the beautiful heart of Romerberg, which is Frankfurt’s old town center. The Justice Fountain stands at the center of the oddly shaped square adorned by the goddess Justitia watching passersby.

What's Included:

Munich – Drive to Medieval Rothenburg

In the morning, visitors of Frankfurt make their way to the home of one of Germany’s greatest writers, Johan Wolfgang Von Goethe. His family home includes a collection of rooms that are filled with elaborate décor, including a dining room and a writer’s room where Goethe penned some of his early works. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you in the hotel lobby for your journey to Munich. En route to Bavaria’s capital city, you will stop at Rothenburg, considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in all of Europe.

Munich – Tour of Linderhof Castle

A zipline and architectural tour will provide fun and insight into the grounds and its repurposing over the years. The Olympic Tower stands 951 feet tall and contains two pods, one of which has a revolving restaurant with a platform that provides a sensational view of Munich’s sprawling design. Tour groups bring children from all over to learn about the 1972 Olympics and the act of terror that marred the games. Make your way next to the Old Town to stroll the cobbled streets of the city’s renovated center to take it all in.

Vienna – Musical Tour in Salzburg

The English Garden in Munich was designed in the late 18th-century and is one of Europe’s grandest parks as it reaches a length of over three miles. Paths meander around the mature oak and maple trees before they reach the meadows bathed in sunlight. Locals jog and stroll around the country atmosphere to play soccer or picnic on the grass. After breakfast, you will leave Munich behind to cross the border into Austria and enjoy the baroque charms of Salzburg. The movie The Sound of Music, with star Julie Andrews, took place in Salzburg, based on the story of the Von Trapp family.

Vienna – Austria’s Capital City

Wake up in glamorous Vienna, a city that both celebrates its history and looks forward to its future. The city’s illustrious past is the center of commerce and culture as the Austro-Hungarian Empire remains apparent in the architecture along the streets and outside of the city in the grandeur of the presidential palace. The aroma of freshly baked strudel drifts out of the side-street cafes to blend with a hint of strong Viennese coffee. Horses pull buggies and clop down the cobbled walkways of the older neighborhoods as the sound of their hoofs on the stone echoes off of the surrounding facades.

Villach – Lipizzaner Stallion Stud Farm

In the morning, you will find the aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans emanating from Frauenhuber on Himmelpfortgasse, which is one of the oldest cafes in the city, having opened its doors in the late 18th-century. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you at the hotel and escort you to the grounds of Schonbrunn Palace. The 18th-century structure contains magnificent architecture in a park-like setting as the Baroque edifice contains more than 1,400 rooms and apartments with a history spanning more than 300 years.

Innsbruck – Drive along the Dolomites

Today you will travel into the unbelievable beauty of the Dolomite Mountains that create a physical border between Italy and Austria. The scenic drive takes you along the winding mountain roads as streams meander down the rugged hills to pass beneath the street. Evergreen roots emerge from the soil and cling to craggy boulders. You will stop in the Italian ski resort town of Cortina d’Ampezzo for a look at the remarkable stone church spires, delightful cascading piazzas, and the soaring alpine peaks piercing the sky.

St. Moritz – Swiss Engadine Valley

In the morning, the sunlight washes over the Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse arcade, a series of handsome merchant houses topped with a gilded roof to create the famous Golden Roof. More than 2,600 gilded copper tiles from the rooftop and lead your eye to the richly decorated coats of arms on the balustrade. After breakfast, you will ascend the mountains en route to St. Moritz, Switzerland. The River Inn travels through the Engadine Valley to give rise to villages filled with traditional houses, Gothic churches, and views of the mountaintops, some of which reach a height of approximately 12,000 feet.

Lugano – Cruise along the Water

In the morning, the rising sun brings the emerald trees and jade grass to light. Fish cause ripples in St. Moritz Lake as the rich aroma of hot chocolate drifts along the street. You will make your way across the Italian border once more to visit the stunning town of Lake Como. The stone-paved streets follow the original path set by the Romans two millennia ago. The Porta Pretoria, old Roman gate, continues to stand at the heart of the historic city center. Enjoy a moment walking around the charming city located on the lakeshore.

Zermatt – The Swiss Alps

Your day will begin outside of Lugano on the edges of Lake Maggiore that straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy. Fig, olive, and pomegranate trees flourish in the mild climate of the region and contrast with the pine and evergreen trees of the mountains. A cable car travels to the top of Monte Mottarone at 4,891 feet above sea level for views of the entire city and edging mountains. You will see the islands that speckle the lake, filled with historical villas and lavish gardens.

Zermatt – A Day at Your Leisure

In the morning, the aroma of hot chocolate fills the hotel and provides a comforting start to your day. Intermittent clouds pass the Matterhorn peak to remind you of where you are in the world and at what altitude you currently stand. The day is yours to enjoy the mountain passes, valley pastures, and abundant trails around Zermatt. Cycle along the meandering roads or travel the cog railway that takes you up to Gornerrat at more than 10,100 feet above sea level to provide unparalleled views to the Matterhorn and Monte-Rosa massif.

Lucerne – The Lower Rhone Valley

Today you will board the railway and return to Tasch to watch the peak of the Matterhorn fade behind the mountain-clad horizon. The road descends into the lower Rhone Valley, to replace the pine trees and craggy cliffs with apricot groves and vast vineyards. You will reach the shores of Lake Geneva and Switzerland’s capital city of Bern. The city stands atop a sandstone ridge surrounded by the Aare River on three sides, and a series of bridges connect the oldest neighborhoods with the contemporary districts that reach across the riverbanks. Stroll along the streets of Old Town as you watch over the aquamarine river waters.

Lucerne – The City of Lucerne

In the morning you will wake up in the exciting city of Lucerne, situated along the cobalt colored lake of the same name. Beautiful music emanates from the sunny plazas and candy-colored buildings as the 14th-century town wall consists of nine towers and provides views of the lake and surrounding countryside. The earlier Roman city fell to the Germanic peoples of Alemannic. You will pass through the history of the town as you walk along the cobblestone streets and beneath the 14th-century covered wooden bridge. The passage runs across the Reuss River and was once the centerpiece of the city.

Frankfurt – Schaffhausen and the Black Forest

In the morning, the sunlight spreads across the stoic waters of Lucerne Lake. The city fills with the aroma of fresh pastries and decadent chocolates. The glacier garden consists of relics from the Ice Age, from polished glacier rocks to boulders dropped by the receding ice offering visual support to the changing climate and its effects on the earth. After breakfast, you will make your way back to Frankfurt. En route to the border, you will stop at Schaffhausen to view the momentous Rhine Falls. The powerful water echoes across the countryside with loud uproar as the waterfall reaches a width of 450 feet with a height of 75 feet to produce a torrent too powerful for fish to climb.

Frankfurt – Depart for Home

The Old Opera House frames the open space of Frankfurt’s Opera Square as the plaza was constructed in the 19th-century with an Italian Renaissance style. A large fountain in the heart of the plaza flickers with light instead of water. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you in the lobby of your hotel and escort you to Frankfurt Airport for your flight home.

Continue through the Simplon Pass to the Swiss Valais and take the train from Tasch to the enchanting town of Zermatt, located at the base of the Matterhorn Mountain. Take a day to discover the beauty in and around Zermatt. Continue and make your way to the capital city of Bern in the lower Rhone Valley. Stroll along the quiet streets of Old Town and the unusual grounds of Bear Park to see the towering Jungfrau massif in Interlaken before you arrive at the vibrant town of Lucerne. Next day, your guide will lead you on an exciting tour of Lucerne’s famous monuments, from the Chapel Bridge to the Lion Monument. Move on to make your way back to Frankfurt with a stop at Schaffhausen before you cross the border into Germany to witness Rhine Falls. • Netherlands

Day 1 Amsterdam

Arrive at any time, find a comfy spot in the hostel to relax or go out to explore before meeting fellow Roamies in the evening.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 amsterdam/berlin.

Remember booking this trip months back? Now, you’re actually on it, in the places you hoped to experience. What a cool feeling! Soak it up with an included bike tour of Amsterdam. Hop on two wheels and cruise along the city's canals like the locals do. Then, travel by train from Amsterdam to Berlin where you will have a free evening to explore this fascinating city. You could also spend the evening unwinding in your hostel. Maybe play some cards as a group. Anyone ever heard of “Pitch”?

Meals included:

Day 3 berlin.

Let loose today, we dare you. Why? Because it will be fun, especially with your newest pals. Get your bearings with an orientation walk with your CEO around the city. Then, it's your turn to explore the tangible history and melting pot of cultures at work here. Head straight for the Berlin Wall, walk through the Brandenburg Gate, and feast those eyes on the Checkpoint Charlie Museum.

Want to try something even cooler? Rent a bike and visit the now defunct Tempelhof Airport which doubles as a beautiful park space in the city. (A best-kept local secret if we do say so ourselves). At night lounge in the hostel or witness the vibrant nightlife Berlin is known for.

Day 4 Berlin/Prague

Prague is up next, with a few treats along the way! First up on your journey is Dresden, Germany. Home to a booming art scene, we think a visit there to wander around the cobblestone streets, is a must. Explore the picturesque old town, stroll through the charming streets and take in the beautiful views of the Elbe river. Step back in time and admire the stunning reconstruction of Frauenkirche, a must-see landmark in Dresden. Indulge in the art and culture scene.

Lace up those boots and set out on a small hike at the Pravcicka Gate, which happens to be the largest naturally formed rock gate in all of Europe. Afterwards, hit the road and arrive in Prague by early evening. Your day doesn’t end here, gather as a group and go on a highlight walk with your cool CEO passing must-see places like, the TV Tower of Prague, the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, and John Lennon's Wall.

Day 5 Prague

Soak up the atmosphere of Prague on a highlight walk of all the city has to offer. Afterwards, hit up the famous Charles Bridge with your friends, admire the clock tower in the main square, or sit and sip a thirst-quenching brew at a traditional Czech beer hall with a side of meat and potatoes. It’s guaranteed to be a loud, lively and marvellous time! Remember, it's all up to you.

Day 6 Prague/Vienna

You're in for a day of unbeatable views! Get ready for another round of those back-in-time feelings as you stroll through the Medieval town of Cesky Krumlov on the way to Vienna. Be your own Queen (or King) of the castle as you explore 13th century ramparts with the added bonus of spectacular views. Slip into your inner explorer and see the Old Town from the top of the round bell tower, people watch from a cafe in the main square while you debate as a group where to have lunch, and then toss a coin to make the decision.

Finish the day in Vienna where you’ll get to know the city as a group on an evening highlights walk. Pass sites like, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Rathaus, National Library, The Hofburg and much more. Later, kick back, relax, and have some laughs at your hostel.

Day 7 Vienna

We’re excited for you today! The day is yours, but don’t let the freedom paralyze you. We have plenty of suggestions. You could seek out famous landmarks like, The Vienna State Opera House, Belvedere Palace, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and Vienna City Hall.

Remember, we all need a little downtime during our travels, so if you need a break we get it. Grab a coffee, order a slice of mouthwatering cake and settle yourself in with your pals on a café terrace as the world moves on around you. Don’t worry, you still have plenty of time to keep finding a few world-famous museums and indulge in typical Austrian desserts like strudel or Sacher Torte. Keep in mind your CEO just might know the best secret places that will really set your experience apart from the main crowd. Ask away!

Day 8 Vienna/Salzburg

If you have a soft spot for beautiful alpine lakes that border two countries, today is going to check off all of those boxes. You’ll be able to wander around the clear waters of Konigsee, smell the fresh air, and find that inner peace that comes from being in the great outdoors.

Salzburg is up next, so don’t forget to save some of that wanderlust energy! You’ll go with the group on an orientation walk of the city. Wander the historic squares and quaint little side streets of Salzburg Old Town. Climb Festungsberg Hill to visit Hohensalzburg Castle, or find the birthplace of Mozart and meet up to go to the museum there.

Day 9 Salzburg/Munich

A whistle blows in the distance as a conductor shouts, “All Aboard!” You rush to the platform, jumping on with just moments to spare. While this may not be exactly what happens today, it will pretty much be along those lines when you hop on a train from Salzburg to Munich. A city with a big heart, as charming as it is laid back, and as buzzing as it is calm will be waiting for you upon arrival.

Spend time in Marienplatz, home to the Old and New Town Halls. Find the famous glockenspiel, or one of the many great beer halls, or the green dome-crested towers of the iconic Church of Our Lady. The vibe is totally up to you, have a pint, or two, or three!

Day 10 Munich

Set your inner detective on the loose in search of the best experiences in Munich. Visit museums, art galleries, lush gardens, and main squares. Learn about the history and culture and shop, eat, drink, and walk until you drop. If you need time to recuperate, opt to stay in the hostel and relax in the common areas before the group welcomes new travellers in the evening.

Day 11 Munich/Innsbruck

Get this adventure started and road trip from Munich to Innsbruck. Nestled snugly in a picturesque valley with panoramic views of the alps, Innsbruck won't disappoint. Get your bearings with the help of your CEO and spend some free time becoming familiar with your hostel and surroundings. Opt to wander along Maria Theresien Street, explore the Grassmayr Bell Foundry, or check out Ambras Castle, famous for its renaissance gardens. Get ready to fill your camera roll!

Day 12 Innsbruck/Venice

Pile onto the bus again and head into the epic scenery of the Dolomites. Think filling your feed with crystal clear mountain lakes and snow-capped peaks. Take a hiatus from the road and stroll around Lake Misurina in the province of Belluno. Known as the “Pearl of Cadore”, you won’t be disappointed with what you find here. The mirror-like reflection of the mountains in the lake makes it seem as if you are walking in a dream.

But don’t forget, Venice is the real end goal of today, so try not to get too attached to Belluno, we bet you already did. Tonight join your CEO for a nice cold beverage and see where the night takes you.

Day 13 Venice

“Oh what a night, what a beautiful night…” This tends to be the song stuck in our heads whenever a visit to Venice is on the table. Can’t you just hear that accordion? After becoming acquainted with Venice's cuisine on a CEO-led food tour, and learning of ghostly legends, the day is yours, no judgments here on what you decide to do. From canals to gondola rides, and inspiring architecture, what’s not to love?

The main city is small enough that you can walk it in several hours with the added bonus of getting those steps in. Explore the canals, relax in the small squares, and go cafe-hopping for coffee, pastries, wine, or all three, because why not? See Venice from the water on a gondola ride through the canals, run through the pigeons or people watch in St. Mark’s Square, take an elevator ride up to the top of the Campanile Di San Marco for panoramic views of the city below. Your only real job today is to have a blast!!

Day 14 Venice/Florence

We promise your tastebuds will thank you and rejoice with what’s on the menu for today’s adventure. All aboard the train from Venice to Florence. Being one of Italy’s most sought after food capitals, make sure you stuff your face while here. Eat the city’s signature pasta and venture out of those comfort zones to sample any specialty dishes you may stumble upon. Your CEO will point you in the right direction on an orientation walk and market visit. This evening happens to be perfect if you are looking to relax, eat some more (if you can), or recover from those food comas in your hostel before a quick highlight tour of the city.

Day 15 Florence

Live your best life on this free day in Florence! Grab some pals, lace up those walking shoes, and let the good times roll. Take in famous works of art hung in the Uffizi and Galleria dell’Accademia. “Oh and ah” at the grand architectural masterpieces of the Duomo and the Palazzo Pitti, and smell the flowers in Boboli Gardens. Looking for more chill vibes? We got you covered. Walk along the Arno and over the Ponte Vecchio before eating your way through the Firenze’s many cafes, ristorantes, and gelato shops.

Day 16 Florence/Rome

Leave Florence behind and catch the train to Rome. Upon arrival grab your travel tribe and let your appetites run wild on an included food tour; cue those Italian fantasies. Sample pizza, gelato and more as you learn about the heart and soul behind Italian cooking.

Get your bearings of Rome on a quick CEO led orientation walk before the night is yours. Did someone say dance party?

Exercise a high degree of caution in Germany due to the threat of terrorism.

  • Terrorism is a threat worldwide. Terrorists have staged attacks and threatened more. They may target transport hubs and places foreigners visit, including Christmas markets. Be alert in public places and report suspicious activity to the police.
  • Violent crime isn't common, but it does happen. Petty crime occurs occasionally, such as pickpocketing and theft from cars and trains. Take care of your belongings.
  • Racial harassment occurs. Take care in cities, particularly in the former East Germany.
  • Watch out for drink spiking. It can lead to sexual assault. Stick with people you trust in bars.

Full travel advice: Safety

  • Take care when in forests, particularly in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Tick-borne encephalitis is a risk. Ticks are active from spring to autumn. Check your body for ticks and remove them as soon as possible.
  • Medical care and facilities are of a high standard.
  • If you don't have insurance, hospitals may ask for up-front payment. Costs are higher than in Australia.

Full advice

Terrorist attacks can occur at any time.

Germany has security measures in place, including at airports and major train stations.

Authorities continue to arrest and charge suspected terrorists.

Recent attacks include knife and vehicle attacks in city centres and on trains. The most recent attack occurred in 2021.

Terrorists may plan more attacks that could happen anywhere at any time.

Recent attacks in European cities have targeted:

  • planes and airports
  • public transport and transport hubs
  • places of worship
  • sporting venues
  • major events that attract large crowds

Christmas  markets and New Year's celebrations are also potential targets for attacks.

To protect yourself from terrorism:

  • be alert to possible threats
  • be cautious around known targets, including in crowds and public places
  • report suspicious activity or items to the police
  • monitor the media for new threats
  • take official warnings seriously
  • follow the advice of local authorities

If there's an attack, leave the area as soon as it's safe. Avoid the affected area in case of secondary attacks.

If you visit Christmas markets, avoid busy times. Have an exit plan if there's a security incident.

Terrorism is a threat worldwide.

More information:

Violent crime isn't common, but criminal attacks unrelated to terrorism can occur.

Monitor the media for news on crime.

Petty crime

Street crime, such as pickpocketing and theft from unattended vehicles, can occur. Bags and personal items can be stolen on trains.

To protect yourself from petty crime:

  • pay attention to your personal security, particularly at night
  • secure your valuables when visiting the central districts and larger city train stations

Harassment

Racially motivated attacks have occurred. These occur more often in urban areas and the former East Germany.

Drink and needle spiking

Drink and needle spiking can occur at popular nightclubs and markets, often leading to  sexual assault .

To protect yourself from drink and needle spiking:

  • don't accept drinks from strangers or leave drinks alone
  • stick with people you trust in bars and nightclubs

Cyber security

You may be at risk of cyber-based threats during overseas travel to any country. Digital identity theft is a growing concern. Your devices and personal data can be compromised, especially if you're connecting to Wi-Fi, using or connecting to shared or public computers, or to Bluetooth.

Social media can also be risky in destinations where there are social or political tensions or laws that may seem unreasonable by Australian standards. Travellers have been arrested for things they have said on social media. Don't comment on local or political events on your social media.

More information:

  • Cyber security when travelling overseas

Kidnapping can happen anywhere, anytime, including in destinations that are typically at lower risk.

The Australian Government's longstanding policy is that it doesn't make payments or concessions to kidnappers.

More information:

  • Kidnapping

Civil unrest and political tension

Public protests and events that draw large groups of people can turn violent.

Demonstrations and civil unrest

Climate and natural disasters

Severe weather  can affect your travel overseas. Monitor local media for updates.

If you're visiting an area affected by severe weather:

  • confirm your plans with your tour operator or travel provider
  • check the condition of infrastructure and facilities with local tour operators and hotels

Travel insurance

Get comprehensive travel insurance before you leave.

Your policy needs to cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation. The Australian Government won't pay for these costs.

If you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. This applies to everyone, no matter how healthy and fit you are.

If you're not insured, you may have to pay many thousands of dollars up-front for medical care.

  • what activities and care your policy covers
  • that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be away
  • Medical Tourism

Physical and mental health

Consider your physical and mental health before you travel, especially if you have an existing medical condition.

See your doctor or travel clinic to:

  • have a basic health check-up
  • ask if your travel plans may affect your health
  • plan any vaccinations you need

Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

If you have immediate concerns for your welfare or the welfare of another Australian call the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on +61 2 6261 3305 or contact your  nearest Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate  to discuss counselling hotlines and services available in your location .

  • General health advice
  • Healthy holiday tips  (Healthdirect Australia)

Medications

Not all medications available over the counter or by prescription in Australia are available in other countries. Some may even be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by an Australian doctor.

If you plan to bring medication, check if it's legal in Germany. Take enough legal medication for your trip.

You can't send medication to Germany by post.

Carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating:

  • what the medication is
  • your required dosage
  • that it's for personal use
  • German Customs

Health risks

Health risks in Germany are similar to those in Australia.

Insect-borne diseases

Tick-borne encephalitis is a risk in forested areas, particularly in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Ticks are common in country areas and are active from spring to autumn.

To protect yourself from disease:

  • make sure your accommodation is insect-proof
  • always use insect repellent
  • wear long, loose, light-coloured clothing
  • get vaccinated if you intend to frequently spend time in forests and meadows in affected areas

During and after visiting forested areas:

  • check your body for ticks
  • remove whole ticks as soon as you can
  • monitor the tick site for any signs of infection
  • Department of Health and Aged Care
  • German Federal Ministry of Health

Medical care

The standard of medical facilities and care is high.

Australia doesn't have a reciprocal health care agreement with Germany. Medical bills can be very expensive.

Hospitals will need you to confirm you have either:

  • appropriate insurance, or
  • enough money to pay for treatment

Medical practitioners will ask for up-front payment. Medical costs are higher than in Australia.

You're subject to all local laws and penalties, including those that may appear harsh by Australian standards. Research local laws before travelling.

If you're arrested or jailed, the Australian Government will do what it can to help you under our  Consular Services Charter . But we can't get you out of trouble or out of jail.

Penalties for drug possession, use or trafficking, even small amounts, include heavy fines and prison sentences.

Follow local regulations when flying drones in Germany. This includes avoiding flying drones in no-fly zones near airports and Oktoberfest venues.

  • Digital platform for Unmanned Aviation  (in English)

Using or displaying Nazi symbols, salutes, songs, or material such as flags or memorabilia is illegal.

You don't have to carry your passport, but local authorities can ask to see it. You may need to produce it on request. Always carry a photo ID.

Australian laws

Some Australian criminal laws still apply when you're overseas. If you break these laws, you may face prosecution in Australia.

Staying within the law and respecting customs

Dual citizenship

Germany recognises dual nationality.

Dual nationals

Visas and border measures

Every country or territory decides who can enter or leave through its borders. For specific information about the evidence you'll need to enter a foreign destination, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Visitor visas

Germany is a part of the  Schengen area , meaning you can enter Germany without a visa in some cases.

You usually don't need a visa if you travel to Germany for less than 3 months as a tourist. Contact the nearest embassy or consulate of Germany if you're travelling to Germany for any other purpose.

For more detailed information on visas to Germany and the German-Australian Agreement on the Exemption of Visa Requirements , visit the website of the German Embassy, Canberra.

Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Contact the nearest  German embassy or consulate  for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules.

Other formalities

Make sure you:

  • carry your passport when crossing borders, including within the  Schengen area
  • monitor border conditions by checking local sources and asking transport providers directly.

Always carry your passport when near the border or when you enter or exit Germany, even when travelling within the  Schengen area .

Some countries won't let you enter unless your passport is valid for 6 months after you plan to leave that country. It can apply even if you're just transiting or stopping over.

Some foreign governments and airlines apply the rule inconsistently. You may receive conflicting advice from different sources.

You can end up stranded if your passport is not valid for more than 6 months.

The Australian Government does not set these rules. Check your passport's expiry date before you travel. If you're not sure it'll be valid long enough, consider getting  a new passport .

Lost or stolen passport

Your passport is a valuable document. It's attractive to people who may try to use your identity to commit crimes.

Some people may try to trick you into giving them your passport. Always keep it in a safe place.

If your passport is lost or stolen, tell the Australian Government as soon as possible:

  • In Australia, contact the  Australian Passport Information Service .
  • If you're overseas, contact the nearest  Australian embassy or consulate .

Passport with 'X' gender identifier

Although Australian passports comply with international standards for sex and gender, we can't guarantee that a passport showing 'X' in the sex field will be accepted for entry or transit by another country. Contact the nearest  embassy, high commission or consulate of your destination  before you arrive at the border to confirm if authorities will accept passports with 'X' gender markers.

  • LGBTI travellers

The currency in Germany is the Euro (EUR).

If you're travelling between Germany and non-EU countries, declare amounts over 10,000 euros or equivalent. This covers all forms of currency, not only cash.

You'll be fined if you don't declare it or give incorrect information on entry or exit.

You don't need to declare it if you travel to or from another EU country.

Local travel

Nationwide and local strikes occur, affecting transport systems, including trains and airline traffic. Monitor the media and contact your travel provider for the latest details.

Oktoberfest

During  Oktoberfest  and other major cultural and sporting events, there'll be an increased demand for accommodation and transport facilities. Expect delays and plan your travel accordingly.

  • Major events

Driving permit

You must be at least 18 years old to drive in Germany.

Always have your driver's licence, insurance and vehicle documents in the vehicle while you're driving.

You can only use your Australian driver's licence in some cases. Check with the  Embassy of Germany .

If you plan to drive, get an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you travel.

Road travel

Road conditions are similar to those in Australia, but some basic rules differ.

Parts of the autobahn (highway) network don't have set speed limits. Be prepared for very fast traffic.

Bicycles have the right of way over vehicles turning into side streets.

Vehicles must be fitted with specific tyres (mud and snow) if there's snow, ice or frost on the road.

You'll usually need winter tyres between October and Easter. However, there's no set period, and it varies regionally.

Check for appropriate tyres before accepting a rental vehicle. If the wrong tyres are fitted, you could get a fine, and your insurance company may reject any claim.

Get to know the local road rules before you drive or ride a vehicle.

Pedestrians and bicycles:

  • bicycles are common
  • many roads have bicycle pathways, usually coloured red, between the pedestrian footpath and the roadway, as well as bicycle traffic lights
  • don't walk on these pathways. Cyclists travel fast and have the right of way
  • accidents and injuries resulting from collisions between cyclists and pedestrians are common

E-Scooters are common in larger cities:

  • You don't need a driver's licence to ride them, but you must be over 14 years of age.
  • They must be insured and not driven on pedestrian footpaths
  • You can't take passengers on E-Scooters
  • Driving or riding

Motorcycles

Ensure your travel insurance covers you when riding a motorbike, quad bike or similar vehicle.

Always wear a helmet.

Taxi drivers who look for business in public places such as the airport may charge you more.

Metered taxis are available from official taxi ranks.

Rideshare services are legal.

Public transport

Germany has a well-developed bus and rail transport system. However, petty crime still happens.

Take care of your personal belongings, particularly on trains and in major transport hubs. Don't leave bags unattended on trains, even briefly.

  • Transport and getting around safely

Some international  cruise  lines stopover in Germany. There are also cruises on major rivers.

  • Travelling by boat

Flight disruptions can happen. Reconfirm your travel leading up to your departure and consider what you would do should your flight be rescheduled at the last minute.

DFAT doesn't provide information on the safety of individual commercial airlines or flight paths.

Check  Germany's air safety profile  with the Aviation Safety Network.

Emergencies

Depending on what you need, contact your:

  • family and friends
  • travel agent
  • insurance provider

Fire and rescue services

Medical emergencies.

For non-urgent criminal issues, contact the local police.

Always get a police report when you report a crime.

Your insurer should have a 24-hour emergency number.

Consular contacts

Read the Consular Services Charter for what the Australian Government can and can't do to help you overseas.

Welcome to Germany. Take the day to settle into your hotel and explore Munich independently.

Aerial view of Munich

This morning, meet your private guide at your hotel for an orientation walking tour of Munich, including Marienplatz and its intricate glockenspiel. This evening, head to the Munich Opera House for a concert, after which you’ll get a peek behind the curtain on a private backstage tour.

Opera House at night

Today, learn to craft Bavarian soft pretzels from scratch.

English Gardens, Munich

This morning, board a train that will cross the border to Salzburg, Austria. You’ll be picked up and brought to your hotel, after which you’ll have the afternoon to settle into the new city.

Salzburg perched on the Salzach River

This morning, meet your private guide for a Mozart-themed walking tour through Salzburg. You’ll be able to visit his birthplace, now a museum, and other sights that were important to him. Keeping with the theme, in the evening you’ll dine on Austrian cuisine during a concert with performers singing arias and duets from some of the composer’s best-known operas.

Mozart's Birthplace museum

Try your hand at making apfelstrudel and a classic Austrian lunch at a cooking class next to the Salzach River. This evening, enjoy a classical music concert with panoramic views at Hohensalzburg Fortress, a medieval stronghold that looms over the city.

Salzburg at dawn

This morning, a private driver will bring you to the train station for your journey to Vienna. After settling into your hotel, embark on a culinary tour on a horse-drawn fiacre. Serving as a brief orientation to the capital city, this tour gives you a chance to try small bites of classic Austrian dishes at various eateries across the city.

Mirabell Gardens, Salzburg

This morning, your private guide will meet you at your hotel for a half-day walking tour of Vienna that includes some of the city’s best-known sights, like the Hofburg and Belvedere Palace, before concluding with a guided visit to the Imperial Treasury. Later today, enjoy a quick introduction to the Viennese waltz with a private instructor.

Magical Bavaria

Small tour group with an exceptionally knowledgeable guide. He knew the best places to stop for food/beer and navigated us through any queues! Such beautiful places to explore (Rothenburg & Residenz Wurzburg were a particular highlight... we would never have visited if travelling alone) Hotels were of a high quality... particularly loved the hotel in Nuremberg (facilities & breakfast were awesome) Location of all hotels were perfect. All airport transfers were on time and very professional. Tour transport was very comfortable- Mercedes Bus. We would definitely book with Indus Travel again as they responded quickly to all queries. Miller were their local supplier in Germany we can highly recommend them - a very professional service.

Berlin Wall Trail Cycle Tour

Berlin Wall Trail Cycle

This was such a great urban adventure and a brilliant way to take in Berlin. I had no idea that the wall was so huge! I rode an e-bike, which made it easy (even though it was mainly flat!) and the directions were great although I did use the GPX files which I could download onto my phone. The trail is well marked most of the way, a few spots a bit tricky but it's all part of the adventure. Highly recommend this trip!

Trip was good in many ways. Would like better written instructions for self-guided ride along with potential stops to see. Guide was effective but English could be better. Felt that other guide was giving better description to other language. Boat staff and food were excellent. One big draw back was W-Fi connection. At best was weak all the time. When we tried to pay bar tab at the end, the interne connection would not allow the cards to be processed.
