Girnar Hill, Pilgrimage Centre Junagadh

  • About Place

About the location: This sacred mountain also known as Revatak Parvata, rising dramatically from the plains, is covered with Jain and Hindu temples. Pilgrims from far and wide come to tackle the long climb up 10,000 stone steps to the summit, which is best begun at dawn. Be prepared to spend a full day if you want to reach the uppermost temples. Ascending in the early morning light is a magical experience, as pilgrims and porters trudge up the steps.

The Jain temples, a cluster of mosaic-decorated domes interspersed with elaborate stupas, are about two-thirds of the way up. The largest and oldest is the 12th-century Temple of Neminath, dedicated to the 22nd Tirthankar: go through the first left-hand doorway after the first gate. Many temples are locked from around 11 am to 3 pm, but this one is open all day. The nearby triple Temple of Mallinath, dedicated to the ninth Tirthankar, was erected in 1177 by two brothers. During festivals, this temple is visited by several monks and spiritual heads.

Further up are various Hindu temples. The first peak is topped by the Temple of Amba Mata, where newly-weds worship to ensure a happy marriage. Beyond here there is quite a lot of down as well as up to reach the other four peaks and further temples. The Temple of Gorakhnath is perched on Gujarat’s highest peak at 1117m. The steep peak Dattatraya is topped by a shrine to a three-faced incarnation of Vishnu. Atop the final outcrop, Kalika is a shrine to the goddess Kali.

Brief History: Girnar Hill is believed to be the Nirvana bhumi of 22nd Tirthankara Lord Neminatha. A temple that commemorates the Tirthankara was built in the 11 th century.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit is between November and February. The Bhavnath Mela over five days in the month of Magha (January–February) brings folk music and dancing and throngs of nagas (Saivite holy men) to Bhavnath Mahadev Temple at Girnar Taleti. It marks the time when Shiva is believed to have danced his cosmic dance of destruction. The Girnar Parikrama festival is held in November.

History Of Girnar Hills

Girnar is referred to as Mount Neminath by Jains, on the other hand. Since the third century, Jains have considered Girnar Hill to be a sacred location. The Tirthankara Neminath temple is the most important temple in this area. It has Bhagavan Neminath’s dedication (the 22nd Jain Tirthankar). Neminath allegedly converted to asceticism in this temple after witnessing animal slaughter on the day of his wedding, according to legend. He gave up all material comforts and traveled to Mount Girnar in search of salvation. The Girnar Hills are home to a number of additional Jain temples, including the Baghwan Rishabhadev, Mallinath, and Baghwan Parshwanath Temples.

Girnar Hill

Top choice in Gujarat & Diu

This sacred mountain, rising dramatically from the plains, is covered with Jain and Hindu temples and is a major pilgrimage site. However, as with any good pilgrimage, getting to the temples isn't easy. Pilgrims are faced with a long, steep climb up 10,000 stone steps to the summit. If you want to join them, be prepared to spend a full day walking to get to the uppermost temples.

The Jain temples, a cluster of mosaic-decorated domes interspersed with elaborate stupas, are about two-thirds of the way up. The largest and oldest is the 12th-century Temple of Neminath , dedicated to the 22nd tirthankar (Jain teacher): go through the first left-hand doorway after the first gate. Many temples are locked from around 11am to 3pm, but this one is open all day. The nearby triple Temple of Mallinath , dedicated to the ninth tirthankar, was erected in 1177 by two brothers. During festivals this temple is a sadhu (ascetic) magnet.

Further up are various Hindu temples. The first peak is topped by the Temple of Amba Mata , where newlyweds worship to ensure a happy marriage. Beyond here there's quite a lot of down as well as up to reach the other four peaks and further temples. The Temple of Gorakhnath is perched on Gujarat’s highest peak at 1117m. The steep peak Dattatraya is topped by a shrine to a three-faced incarnation of Vishnu. Atop the final outcrop, Kalika, is a shrine to the goddess Kali.

The trail begins 4km east of the city at Girnar Taleti ; an autorickshaw from town costs ₹100. Refreshment stalls on the ascent sell chalk, so that you can graffiti your name on the rocks. If you can’t face the walk, dholis (chairs) carried by porters cost ₹4000 (return) if you weigh between 50kg and 70kg, and ₹4500 for heavier passengers. If your weight range isn’t obvious, you'll suffer the indignity of being weighed on a huge beam scale before setting off. (The majority of people milling around at the bottom of the hill have no intention of walking all the way to the top, and many just walk a few hundred metres before returning.)

Note that while photography is permitted on the trail, it’s not allowed inside the temples.

The Bhavnath Mela , over five days in the month of Magha, brings folk music, dancing and throngs of nagas (naked sadhus) to Bhavnath Mahadev Temple at Girnar Taleti. It marks the time when Shiva is believed to have danced his cosmic dance of destruction.

In the next few years the ascent of Girnar Hill is set to become much easier: a cable car that will whisk pilgrims to the top is under construction.

The Historical Significance and Tourism of Girnar Hill, Junagadh

Introduction to girnar hill.

Girnar Hill, an ancient and sacred site located in Junagadh, Gujarat, India, stands tall as an emblem of historical, religious, and cultural importance. As one of the major pilgrimage destinations in India, Girnar Hill has been attracting visitors, pilgrims, and historians for centuries. Its history is steeped in legends and myths that resonate with people from various faiths, including Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.

History of Girnar Hill

The history of Girnar Hill's tourism dates back to ancient times when it was known as 'Ujjayant' or 'Raivatak'. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed to be the abode of the nine immortals or 'Navnath'. In Jain tradition, Girnar is sacred as the site where the 22nd Tirthankar, Neminath, attained salvation. The mountain's five peaks are dotted with beautifully carved temples and shrines, making it a monumental testament to the architectural prowess of the past. The earliest structures were possibly built during the Mauryan Empire.

The Emergence of Girnar as a Tourist Destination

The region saw a significant boost in tourism during the reign of the Solanki dynasty (around the 11th and 12th centuries), who patronized the construction of numerous temples and were great supporters of art and culture. Over time, the Mughal Empire and the British Raj contributed to the development of the area, constructing forts and other structures, although they were primarily focused on strategic significance rather than tourism.

Tourism Trends in Girnar Hill

In recent times, with the development of better transportation and accommodation facilities, Girnar Hill has seen a steady increase in the number of visitors. The Gujarat government has also put significant efforts into promoting tourism, recognizing the site's potential to attract domestic and international tourists alike.

  • Ecotourism: With Girnar's proximity to the Gir National Forest, ecotourism has gained much traction. Wildlife sightings and trekking have become popular activities.
  • Pilgrimage Tourism: Given its religious significance, Girnar Hill sees a massive influx of pilgrims during festivals such as Girnar Parikrama and the Maha Shivratri fair.
  • Adventure Tourism: The challenging ascent of 9999 steps to reach the summit of Girnar has made it a hotspot for trekkers and adventure seekers.
  • Cultural Tourism: With Junagadh's rich history and cultural heritage, tourists are increasingly engaging in local festivals, cuisine, and arts.

Accessibility and Amenities

To cater to the growing number of tourists, infrastructure at Girnar Hill has been improving continuosuly. Nearby Junagadh city offers a range of accommodation options from budget to luxury stays. The region is accessible by road, and the nearest airport is Keshod, about 40 kilometers away, although most international tourists arrive via Rajkot or Ahmedabad airports. Plans for a ropeway connecting the base of the hill to Ambaji temple at the top have been in the works, aiming to ease the burden of the climb and attract more visitors.

Challenges in Preserving Girnar Hill

While the surge in tourism has economic benefits, it also comes with the challenge of preserving the natural and cultural integrity of Girnar Hill. There are growing concerns about the impact of tourism on the environment and the need for sustainable practices to ensure that Girnar remains a beacon of historical and spiritual significance for generations to come.

The historical allure of Girnar Hill in Junagadh, with its trove of legends, religious significance, and splendid architectural marvels, continues to stand as a beacon drawing tourists from across the world. Its management's ability to blend the increasing tourism demand with responsible conservation efforts will determine the future of this ancient site. For now, Girnar Hill remains an enchanting destination reflecting the soul of Gujarat's rich tapestry of history and spirituality.

An ancient hill near the town of Junagadh, Girnar is famous for more than just the spectacular views. Come and discover the Ashoka edicts, Asia’s longest ropeway, and the Girnar Jain Temples.

Girnar Hill

Standing tall at 3672 feet, Girnar is an ancient hill in Junagadh, covered with 866 Hindu and Jain temples that are spread over its summit. One has to climb 9999 steps to reach the final summit. It is said that Girnar Hill holds a special place for Hindu devotees. Dattatreya Paduka, an ancient temple located on the 9,999th step of Girnar Hill, is the most revered site for Hindus. Gorakshanath Temple and Amba Mata Temple are some other Hindu Temples that are worth visiting.

The main event for Hindus is the Maha Shivaratri fair held every year on the 14th day of the Hindu calendar month of Magha. At least 1 million pilgrims visit the fair to participate in pooja and parikrama of Girnar hill.

Jains on the other hand, call Girnar as Mount Neminath. Girnar Hill has been an important site for Jains since the 3rd century. The most significant temple here is the Tirthankara Neminath temple. It is dedicated to Bhagavan Neminath (the 22nd Jain Tirthankar). Historians say that Neminath became an ascetic in this temple when he saw the slaughter of animals for food on his wedding day. He renounced all worldly pleasures and came to Mount Girnar to attain salvation. There are several other Jain temples in the Girnar Hills such as the Baghwan Rishabhadev Temple, Mallinath Temple and Baghwan Parshwanath Temple.

Girnar Ropeway

Girnar ropeway on Mount Girnar is Asia's longest ropeway. It connects the base of the hill, which is known as Girnar Taleti, to Jain goddess Ambika’s temple with a 10-minute ride. The ropeway is 2,320 metres (7,600 ft) long, takes passengers 850 metres (2,800 ft) up the hill to the Ambika temple.

Ashoka Edicts

Ashoka famously converted to Buddhism and renounced violence soon after being victorious in a gruesome Kalinga War, filled with deep remorse for the bloodshed of the war. Ashoka's Major Rock Edicts were concerned with practical instructions in running a kingdom such as the design of irrigation systems and descriptions of Ashoka's beliefs in peaceful moral behavior. Fourteen of Ashoka's Major Rock Edicts, dating to circa 250 BCE, are inscribed on a large boulder that is housed in a small building located outside the town of Junagadh on Saurashtra peninsula in the state of Gujarat, India. It is located on Girnar Taleti road. An uneven rock, with a circumference of seven meters and a height of ten meters, bears inscriptions etched with an iron pen in Brahmi script in a language similar to Pali and date back to 250 BCE, thus marking the beginning of the written history of Junagadh.

Damodar Kund

Located at the foothills of the Girnar Hill, Damodar Kund is a sacred lake, most famous for the immersion of ashes, on par with the Holy Ganges and Triveni Sangam at Prayag. The lake is 257 ft long and 50 ft broad and only 5 feet deep. It is surrounded by a well-built ghat. South of the Damodara Kund is the Damodar Hari Temple. The idols here are supposed to have been installed by Vajranabha, the grandson of Lord Shri Krishna. Covering an area of 32 acres, the temple is constructed using pink sandstone. Devotees are seen taking a holy dip in the sacred bathing tank, Damodar Kund, before offering prayers at the temple. The Damodar Kund is closely attached to the life of Narsinh Mehta, the famous 15th century Gujarati poet and devotee of Krishna, who used to come to bathe at Damodar Kund and is said to have written many of his prabhatiyas (morning prayers), in the natural surrounding here at the Damodar lake, at the picturesque foothills of Girnar.

Girnar Hill

Girnar Hills, Gujarat

Junagadh is an ancient location in Gujarat associated with many legends of spiritual mysticism. It is home to the Girnar hills, a group of mountains, speculated to be existing even before the Himalayas and extremely revered and sacred for being home to many spiritual ascetics who have found enlightenment here. Hence it is famous for being an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Jains. Hence Girnar is also known as Girinagar, the city on the hills.

Interestingly while Girnar is one of the prescribed pilgrimage spots revered in Jainism, it is equally revered by Hindu ascetics of different sects who pledge their reverence to the Hindu deity Shiva. Such is the confluence of religious pilgrims and ascetics coming to pay their respects to Lord Shiva, Girnar is also home to the Maha Shiv Ratri fair which is held on the auspicious day dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. The Girnar hill is flocked equally by pilgrims of all religions including Hindus, Buddhists and Jains during the Girnar Parikrama festival which involves circumambulation of the base of the Girnar Hills for religious reasons.

For Jains, it is considered the spot of enlightenment and attainment of salvation during meditation for the last of the Jain Tirthankaras, ascetics responsible for the promulgation of the alternate sect of Jainism. For Hindus this spot is revered as the Lord Dattareya, the primordial saint or Yogi in a sect of Hinduism, where he is often said to be the teacher of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva. While in Nepal he is worshipped as a deity, in many parts of India he is worshipped as a syncretic deity that is an incarnation of the 3 main founding deities of Hinduism, Shiva Vishnu and Bramha. Lord Dattareya is said to be the founder of the Nath sect of Hinduism who are all followers of Lord Shiva whom they believe to be the first Nath.

As per Hindu mythology, Girnar Hills is said to be the place where Sri Krishna slayed mighty Yavana warrior Kalayavana. Notwthstandingly, the site is an important place of religious significance even for Buddhists. At a height of 3676 feet above the sea, and considered older than the Himalayas, Mount Girnar is home to various Jain temples and is one of the most astounding mountains capes of India. Further beyond the Jain temples at a height of 200 feet above, a rugged trekking route leads you to a spring of fresh water. At the summit is a shrine dedicated to Lord Dattareya and preserves his foot prints for paying respects. The place is revered by both Hindus and Jains alike.

During the pilgrimage of Girnar hills, The first temple of lord Neminath is situated on the 4,400 steps revered by Jains are both historical & architectural marvel and then Second Temple of Goddess Ambaji is situated on the 5,200 steps, and the Last and highest temple of Lord Dattatreya is situated on the 10,000 steps, which is popularly known as ‘Guru Shikhar’ or ‘Datta Shikhar, it is a major Hindu pilgrimage site atop of hill.

Other than a religious destination, the Girnar Mountain is also famous for its trekking destination. One of the most beautiful, difficult and adventurous treks, to reach top Girnar hill which is an 10,000 step stair travel from the hill below and takes about 5-6 hours to complete.

Exclusive Girnar Travel Guide, India

Girnar, also known as Girinagar or Revatak Pravata, is a group of mountains in the Junagadh District of Gujarat, India, situated near Junagadh. Older than the Himalayas, Girnar, the mountain and its range are considered sacred. It is an important pilgrimage site for both Jains and Hindus, who gather here during the Girnar Parikrama festival. Girnar is significant among Shiva devotees for the mystic space-time of the mountain range with the known presence and turnover of different sects of Sadhu Babas, Nath sect, different Jain Tirthankaras to Girnar, its typical flora and fauna, and the Maha Shivratri fair. Girnar hosts a number of temples and some historical spots across its range. Amidst the lush green Gir Forest, the mountain range serves as the hub of religious activity. For Hindus this place is considered holy as Dattatreya stayed there. Also, this place is associated with the death of the mighty Yavana warrior Kalayavana in Dwaparyug. Lord Shri Krishna lured Kalayavana into the cave where the great king of Tretayug, Muchukunda, one of the forefathers of Lord Shri Rama was in a deep slumber of thousands of years after helping Devas in an epic war with Asuras. Contemplating an absolutely undisturbed sleep he was given a boon that anyone who dared to disturb his sleep would get burnt to ashes immediately. Fast forward to Dwaparyug, in the darkness deep inside the cave, Kalayavan mistakenly wakes up Muchukunda from his sleep, and sure to his boon Kalayavan was decimated into ashes instantaneously. Then Muchukunda was delighted to see Lord Shri Krisha there, who was none other than Lord Vishnu. This story is very popular in Srimad Bhagavata. Lord Damodar here is considered as Adhipati of Girnar Kshetra. This place is very holy for Vaishnavaits. Notwithstanding the story though, today Mount Girnar is even more popular as a Shaiva and Siddha Kshetra. This mountain was considered holy to Buddhists as well. According to tradition, Pavhari Baba, who had an immense influence on Swami Vivekananda was first initiated into the mysteries of practical yoga on the top of mount Girnar.

How to Visit Gir National Park – Complete Guide

lion

How to Visit Gir National Park : This blog is my favorite. I was born in Junagadh and even though I never really lived there I feel this immense sense of belonging in this city.

Junagadh is primarily known for the Gir National Park: The home to Asiatic lions. Yes, this article is a well-curated guide on How to Visit Gir National Park and how to plan a perfect trip. But, I’ll also include all the lesser-known fabulous spots in and around the sanctuary. Just a bonus you know!

Table of Contents

Where is Gir National Park?

The Girnar mountain range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.

Here’s to the geography geeks – the Girnar mountain range is originally a part of the Gondwana landmass. Yes, it’s damn ancient. The mountain range is situated in the state of Gujarat and spread over Rajkot, Junagadh, Surendranagar, and Amreli districts.

The Gir National Park is a zone within the Girnar mountain range.

As a tourist, Junagadh is the place you want to reach . The sanctuary is accessible from here.

How to Visit Gir National Park – Is it worth a trip and why?

I personally believe that Junagadh is heavily underrated in its tourist rating. It’s a fortified landlocked city with immense relevance in Hindu and Gujarati history.

You should really spare some time and go through this site for detailed information on Junagadh.

How to visit Gir National Park

Junagadh is accessible by train and road. Unfortunately, there isn’t an airport so you have to take a cab or bus from Ahmedabad or Baroda airport. Rajkot is the nearest domestic airport.

girnar gujarat tourism

The best time to visit is post-monsoons, the months of September to March present the forest in full glory. Also, the sanctuary is closed during peak monsoons for 3-4 months, and hence check out the schedule here.

How do I book a safari and what to pack?

We booked our safari online from this site – GirNationalPark.in . You can also just reach Sasan and book your safari offline, on the counter.

The two safari options in Gir National Park are:

  • Devadiya park

1. Sasan safari option

Sasan is an open jeep proper 3hours safari experience and Devadiya park is more of a zoo kinda experience. Based on your budget and adrenaline rush make your choice.

Sasan Safari is a full-fledged jeep safari with no guarantee of seeing a lion. As clear as that.

Lion in nature

2. Devadiya Park Safari

Devadiya Park safari is in a cage-like bus as you visit lion frequented territories. Also, Devadiya park has its own internal boundary and hence there are more chances of seeing a lion.

Choose your safari accordingly.

What to Pack for Gir National Park Safari

Junagadh is a warm place, so warm clothes should do along with the basic necessities.

  • A water bottle
  • Sports shoes
  • Sunscreen lotion – say you’re skin sensitive

Yep, that’d be all to bring along!

Here are some accommodations to check out in Junagadh before you go:

My visit to Gir National Park

We left from Ahmedabad to Junagadh by road (a 7-hour drive). Then we stayed at Hotel Green Park for the night. We’d pre-booked the safari online.

The safari closes in the evening hours so I suggest the early morning slot (before 8.30) or the last slot of the day( 3.00-6.00) because these times provide the maximum opportunity to visualize animals in their natural ways.

Gir National Park

Get Final Permit from Gir Safari Office: We drove to the official Gir safari pick-up point, mind you there are no private safaris operating in Gir. No matter where you’ve booked from, you need to get a final permit from this office.

We were booked for 8.30 am to 11.30 am safari in an open jeep. There are multiple routes in the sanctuary to avoid traffic and when your driver is an experienced one he’ll tell you a lot of stories.

Our driver was no less than an expert. He told us about all the wildlife as well as ayurvedic trees seen around the range.

Coming across two lion prides!

We came across two lions prides. Yaaay! The first pride had just hunted down a buffalo and was devouring it. I saw two lionesses and 3 cubs. The lion was nowhere around. The second pride had two lionesses one lion and a cub.

They were sleeping in the shade of a tree, as we parked at a distance of 15 feet one of them stretched and yawned!

This is out of context but in case you prefer organic food then do buy some organic jaggery from Sasan. You don’t have to look for it, it’s pretty famous among visitors just ask any shopkeeper.

So that’s Gir for you ladies and gentlemen!

Since you’ve come so far, then check out the other places around Gir.

Places around Gir worth visiting

  • The Girnar ropeway
  • 100 km from Junagadh, we have Somnath temple
  • To those up for the experience then every winter after Diwali, the Girnar Parikrama starts. People travel 36 km on foot inside the protected area. For a month the forest department issues permissions for the Parikrama. I haven’t performed it yet but it’s on my bucket list. Let me know in case you want to join in!

On that note, I conclude this guide on How to Visit Gir National Park . I hope it clears all your apprehensions regarding Gir and Gujarat as a tourist spot!

Girnar Jain Temples, Gujarat

Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Gujarat, India, the Girnar Jain Temples stand as a testament to the rich cultural and religious tapestry of the region. Perched atop the Girnar mountain range, these temples have endured centuries, witnessing the ebb and flow of time while remaining steadfast in their spiritual significance. This sacred connection elevates the temples to a revered status among the Jain community.

The historical timeline of the temples is intricate, with construction and renovations spanning various dynasties, including the Mauryas, Guptas, and Solankis. Each ruler left a distinctive imprint on the temples, shaping them into a harmonious blend of architectural styles and spiritual symbolism.
