Mystery of the Stone Spheres Tour

Mysterious Stone Spheres of Costa Rica in Golfito

These mysterious spherical stones have been unearthed throughout southern Costa Rica since 1939, but their origin remains unknown even to this day!

Located in Osa, in Costa Rica's southernmost Pacific, Palmar Sur is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, one of two open to the public. Finca 6 was a multifunctional site for the Diquis indigenous culture, and findings date the site back to two periods: the Aguas Buenas (300-800AC), and the Chiriquí (800-1550AC).

You will be able to view the intriguing stone spheres, and what scholars are able to say about their creation and meaning, as well as what remains one of life's greatest enigmas. You may even be able to uncover some clues that could help unravel this centuries old mystery!

The southern port town of Golfito is often considered a gateway to other attractions, namely the big waves of Pavones to the south, and Piedras Blancas National Park to the north. Located across from the Osa Peninsula on the Sweet Gulf, the city receives an enormous amount of rain, and is backed by thick, beautiful forests. While the water here is a bit murky for swimming, sport fishing conditions could not be better – and many tour operators use the town as a base for excursions.

Demographically, Golfito is split according to income. The town’s affluent members call the Zona Americana (or American area) their home. It is composed of large, plantation-style houses in which United Fruit corporation executives used to reside many years ago. The working class generally lives on the other side of town, known as the Pueblo Civil.

Once a thriving banana port, Golfito received more than its share of hard knocks – and after many years, the aftereffects of a tumultuous history in the banana industry are still poignantly reflected in the community. In the late 1930s, the United Fruit Company named Golfito its headquarters, bringing hundreds of jobs and a general sense of prosperity to the area. The company built schools, medical facilities and even a police station. Within 20 years, over 90% of bananas exported from Costa Rica were processed through the port. In 1985, labor strikes, rising banana prices and inflation prompted United Fruit to suddenly pull its operations. After enjoying fifty years of economic activity, nearly everyone had become unemployed overnight.

In an effort to jump start the economy and to take advantage of Golfito’s close proximity to Panama, the Costa Rican government has transitioned the town into a Duty Free Zone. Products are not subject to import taxes – and thrifty shoppers from around the country take advantage of low prices on appliances and electronic goods. An outdoor mall called the Deposito Libre carries everything from iPods to washing machines.

Attractions:

Casa de orquideas.

These gorgeous botanical gardens have been family owned and operated for over 30 years. Bird watchers marvel at the100 species of birds that are attracted to the park’s orchids, heliconias, bromeliads and slew of edible plants. The gardens can be reached by boat, kayak, or on foot for travelers staying on Playa San Josecito. (Playa San Josecito, Golfo Dulce. Guided tours offered Sundays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m.; $8 per person, 3 people minimum. Self-guided walking tours available Mon-Wed and Saturday; $5 per person. 8829-1247.)

Golfito Wildlife Refuge

Surrounded on three sides by the town of Golfito, this wildlife refuge was created largely as a method of protecting the city’s water supply. Animals are plentiful along the park’s trails, and can include collared peccaries, white-nosed coatis, agoutis and pacas. All four species of monkey native to Costa Rica reside in the reserve: capuchin, spider, howler and squirrel. The refuge shares its northern boundary with Piedras Blancas National Park, and as a result the two protected zones feature much of the same biodiversity and wildlife.

Piedras Blancas National Park

Previously a part of the legendary Corcovado National Park, Piedras Blancas is home to a dizzying array of plant and animal life. The Rio Esquinas and Rio Piedras river basins – combined with up to 200 inches of rainfall per year – produce an amazingly verdant habitat for a species list almost identical to Corcovado’s. Rescue organizations dedicated to scarlet macaws and wild cats have a great deal of success inside the park, mostly due to its extreme isolation. Poison dart frogs, peccaries, monkeys, caimans, crocodiles and over 330 bird species inhabit the zone.

The Paradise Tropical Garden

Inaugurated in 2001, this small garden features an enjoyable “see, smell, taste, and touch experience.” Guests are invited to sample edible flowers, fruits, and other plants before heading out into the extensive botanical gardens. The tour winds up with a snack of local foods, including fried plantains and yucca. (Golfito. 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon-Sun. Donations encouraged, reservations recommended to set up food sampling in advance. 2789-8746.)

Osa Wildlife Sanctuary

Get up close and personal with sloths, spidermonkeys and scarlet macaws at the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary. Wounded or orphaned animals and illegally-captured pets are brought from all over Costa Rica and Nicaragua to be rehabilitated in the refuge, which is located on the edge of Piedras Blancas National Park, on Playa Cativo. Tours are available every day from about 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and include transportation from Golfito or Puerto Jimenez, both about a half an hour away by boat. Tel: 8837-1631

Activities:

Deposito Libre is a duty free shopping mall, featuring imported goods free of the hefty taxes normally added to their price tags. Shoppers must get a special credit slip giving permission to spend up to $500 one day in advance of purchases, and all purchases must be made on the same day. The mall is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. Slips can be obtained Mondays from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Sport Fishing

Sport fishing is Golfito’s most popular activity, and well-equipped boats can be chartered for a half or full day. The fishing is excellent year-round, and common catches include marlin, yellow fin tuna, wahoo and roosterfish. The dry season months of November through May are prime for pulling in record Pacific sailfish.

Places to Stay:

A number of luxurious eco-lodges mesh effortlessly with the greenery in and around Piedras Blancas National Park and the beaches of Nicuesa, Cativo and San Josecito. Solar powered, self sustainable and only accessible by boat, these resorts are guilt-free escapes from society. Located a short distance from Golfito, several eco-lodges strive to provide fair employment opportunities – and to leave only the most positive social, economic and environmental impact. Downtown Golfito also features a variety of mid-range and upscale accommodations, most of which offer air conditioning and wireless Internet. Budget hotels, catering mainly to backpackers, are also available.

Getting There:

Air: Both Sansa and Nature Air offer daily flights to Golfito.

Boat: Boat taxis run at least five times daily between Puerto Jimenez and Golfito. The fare is about $6 and takes a half-hour.

Car: From San Jose take the Caldera highway, Route 27, toward Jaco and Quepos, continuing south to Dominical. From Dominical, take the Costanera Sur to Palmar Norte. Then get back on the Interamerican highway until Rio Claro. At the light, take a right to Golfito.

Public Bus: $12.75; 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (direct, no stops); 8 hours. Departs from Plaza Viquez. 2221-4214.

Taylor Swift shares big video hint that the 'Eras Tour' may be changing

Taylor Swift is taking fans behind the scenes of her “Eras Tour” with a series of clips, and Swifties now suspect there’s a hint as to changes coming to the world-renowned show.

Days after releasing her newest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift posted another YouTube Short video with her hit single “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone,” playing over videos of her and her dancers rehearsing for the tour. But there’s one moment in the montage that has fans doing what they do best: speculating.

Fans will recognize many of the scenes being practiced, such as Swift's iconic entrance from the ground, her performance of "Lavender Haze" in a coat surrounded by clouds, playing "Champagne Problems" seated at a moss-covered piano and more. But one clip, in which Swift stands in the middle of a stage with her dancers lined up behind her wearing top hats and holding canes, did not appear in the original "Eras Tour."

Taylor Swift YouTube Short

“Since when do background dancers have a top hat and canes?!” one fan with the username armaisacat.1989 captioned a TikTok of the scene, adding “Taylor Swift you have some explaining to do!!”

The “Eras Tour” is a three-hour, 15-minute concert in which Swift performs songs from all of her albums since her 2006 self-titled debut record. Many — including the TODAY.com staff — have speculated whether or not the pop star would integrate “Tortured Poets Department” as another era in the show.

All will be (hopefully) be revealed when the tour begins again in Paris on May 9.

This is the second YouTube Short Swift has posted since the latest album release. On April 19, she shared glimpses of her personal life , again set to the tune of “Fortnight.”

In that compilation, her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, makes appearances with the star. The videos are in collaboration with YouTube, encouraging users to post their own “14 snippets” of their lives set to the same song.

Bam margera addresses uk tour cancelation drama, adamant he's sober, bam margera addresses uk tour cancelation drama ... adamant he's sober.

Bam Margera 's clearing the air about why his UK tour got the axe -- and while some have suspected it's all about him falling off the wagon ... he's saying he's clean and sober.

Here's the deal ... Bam's been across the pond lately for a string of Q&A gigs he'd booked through a promoter -- where he was scheduled to talk to audiences ... all of which recently came to a screeching halt after the peeps he was working with announced the rest of his appearances were cancelled.

There's been a lot of accusations and drama brewing in the background this past week -- with allegations that Bam was acting erratic and rolling with a new crew of misfits.

Some online -- especially on Reddit -- have been claiming Bam's been indulging in booze and drugs again ... but he hopped online Thursday to deny all that, insisting not only is he alcohol-free ... but he had a perfectly good reason for canceling his shows in the UK.

Long story short ... Bam says he re-injured his knee, and that these shows are gonna get rebooked -- so it's no harm, no foul in his mind.

He does allude to some kind of physical confrontation between the people Bam's been staying with and the promoters ... but he says he wasn't in the mix for that -- so he doesn't think he did anything wrong. He also acknowledges he and his girlfriend have been fighting.

Last but not least ... Bam shoots down any notion he's been under the influence lately, pointing to the fact he's drinking tea in the video. Remember, this comes not too long after he got into a fistfight on the street here in L.A. ... so, thing have been a bit tumultuous.

Despite all that ... Bam is insisting everything's A-OK -- although, hard to say if folks buy it.

Here's hoping all is, in fact, well -- because there are many who are pretty worried about him.

Was Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Detroit bigger than NFL draft crowds? It's complicated

golfito day tour

How does the record-breaking attendance for the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday compare to other peak days in Detroit? It's hard to tell given the crowd estimates are created with different methodologies and geographic boundaries.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour visit to the Motor City last June spanned two days, with two sold-out shows of about 60,000 fans each day at Ford Field. But that is the number of people attending the concert, not the number of people estimated visiting Detroit's business district. All told for just one day Swift was in the city, June 10, nearly 350,000 people flocked to Detroit's Central Business District. Motor City Pride Fest was that day at Hart Plaza, too.

That's higher than Thursday's draft crowd of about 275,000 fans — the largest daily NFL draft attendance on record, according to NFL officials. But 275,000 is the NFL's estimate, which is measured differently over a different geographic area. Magnetometers or metal detectors that fans walk through to enter the draft areas provide real-time crowd estimates, according to an e-mail from an NFL spokesperson.

Swift day data was compiled by the Downtown Detroit Partnership from Placer.ai , a firm that analyses foot traffic data from mobile phones.

The daily estimates include the number of people visiting or working in Detroit's Central Business District − an area bounded by the Lodge Freeway (west), Interstate 75 (north), I-375 (east) and the Detroit River (south). The median number of people visiting or working in the central business district between April 1, 2023 and April 7, 2024 was 102,000; foot traffic was higher at about 122,000 people on weekend days.

NFL DRAFT HUB: Latest NFL Draft mock drafts, news, live picks, grades and analysis.

Back to the draft

Thursday's 275,000 attendance figure includes fans spanning from Campus Martius Park to Hart Plaza and satellite viewing areas such as the Corner Ballpark (Detroit's former Tiger Stadium). If the draft attendance in Detroit continues at this pace over the weekend, Detroit is on track to break the 600,000 record for total attendance, previously held by Nashville in 2019.

Nashville previously held the NFL draft record for daily attendance, too, with about 200,000 fans in 2019 .

Within the last year, people visited Detroit for a variety of jam-packed concerts, sporting and other events. Pink set a record for a reserved seat concert at Comerica Park , with more than 45,000 fans and 207,955 people in the central business district; Detroit Lions' home games extended into the playoffs ; Taylor Swift, Beyoncé , Metallica and many more brought thousands of people to downtown Detroit.

Where the record NFL draft in Detroit stands in relation will have to wait until the draft is over and more comparable data is available next week.

PGA Tour surprising duo sits atop Zurich Classic of New Orleans leaderboard

Day 1 of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans saw fresh faces on top of the leaderboard as they went low to set the tone.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans, PGA Tour, Mark Hubbard, Ryan Brehm

Two duos went low at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans as Patton Kizzire and his partner Ben Kholes are tied with Mark Hubbard and Ryan Brehm.

Each team fired off bogey-free 11-under 61s to lead by one shot over three teams at 10-under, as of this writing.

Kizzire and Kholes made six birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 30 shots. Coming home, they added four birdies between holes 10-14. The duo birdied the 18th to come home in 31 strokes to cap off a strong first round.

“Well, we came out of the gates both playing really well, both birdieing the same holes. Ideally, we’d like to mix it up. But we started well and just kept it going,” Kizzire said. “Whenever one of us needed the other, we stepped up and ham-and-egged it. He was a fantastic partner. I needed him out there, and he stepped up.”

Both have played at the Zurich Classic, but it is their first time together.

“It’s pretty fun just getting out here, and like he said, having a partner. Not something we get to do hardly ever. It’s fun kind of leaning on someone else and having that camaraderie out there,” Kholes said.

Day 2 will feature a new format in Alternate-shot, which can be difficult. However, for this duo, the game plan will remain the same.

“Just trying to put ourselves in the best spots that we can and picking each other up when something doesn’t go right,” Kholes said. “That’s all you can do. Just stay in the moment and hit the best shot you can at each point, and we’ll see where that puts us.”

They were not the only players to find success; they matched Hubbard and Brehm for the low round of the day.

Teams that also performed well in the Four-Ball format on Thursday were Davis Thompson and Andrew Novak, who posted a 10-under 62.

One of the Canadian duos, Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith, are two shots back after they carded a 9-under 63. Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala finished Day 1 with a 7-under 65.

The betting favorites coming into the week , Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, settled for a 7-under 65 to sit four shots behind the leaders.

The afternoon wave got a little more wind on the golf course than the morning groups, but a few groups were poised to go low. Keith Mitchell and Joel Dahmen are 7-under through 11 holes. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are also 7-under through 10 holes to start the back nine.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Fans theorize that Taylor Swift is changing her Eras Tour setlist to include songs from her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Swift shared a black-and-white video collage of her practicing for the upcoming leg of her tour and added her new single, “Fortnight,” in the background to YouTube Shorts on Thursday.

The Grammy winner, 34, included several snippets of her wearing different athleisure outfits while holding a microphone, singing and dancing on different parts of the stage.

The “Cruel Summer” songstress even featured a snap of her playing her acoustic guitar and sitting at her signature mossy piano.

However, some eagle-eyed fans noticed a few differences in some of the clips from what she’s done in her past shows –– such as her background dancers wearing black top hats and canes.

Swift also appeared to be leaning on a silver pole that seemed to have a white “TTPD” sign hanging on the side of it. Fans additionally pointed out her white guitar and matching microphone.

Swift will resume her tour in Paris in two weeks –– aka a fortnight –– on May 9.

Several fans flooded the comments pointing out the changes and wrote about how convinced they are she’ll be swapping some songs for “TTPD” hits.

Swift has not released the setlist for her upcoming shows and she did not share the setlist before she kicked off the tour in Arizona in March 2023.

The “Shake it Off” songstress previously sang 44 songs on every show and swapped out two songs each concert that were acoustic “surprise songs” not included in the same setlist.

After Paris, Swift will hit several European countries, including Sweden, Spain and Portugal, before wrapping up in London in August.
