7 of Tasmania's best food and wine trails

These great road trips offer a taste of gourmet Tasmania, from reverently produced cheeses to its wines, beers and whiskies.

By Andrew Bain

Tasmania 's international culinary reputation is well deserved. The island state produces an astonishing array of excellent produce, from beer and berries to pork and pinot noir. These regional routes head to the source of  Tasmania 's famous flavours.

Delicious taste of Tasmania

Tasmanian cider trail.

Once known as the Apple Isle for its superb crops, Tasmania continues to celebrate the apple with the  Tasmanian Cider Trail . The trail links ten cider producers across the state, from the southern  Huon Valley , where 80 per cent of the state's apples are grown, to cideries in the north around the wine-producing  Tamar Valley . There are also detours to other cider producers in the capital city of  Hobart , as well as upstream from  Hobart  in the Derwent Valley, and in the apple-producing northern town of Spreyton, just over a one-hour drive north-west of  Launceston . The drive from the Huon Valley to the Tamar Valley is about 300 kilometres (187 miles).

Tasmanian Beer Trail

Breweries abound in  Tasmania , and are the focus of the  Tasmanian Beer Trail , which brings together more than 20 breweries on one hop-filled journey around the state. Begin in the capital city of Hobart, driving along the state's beach-lined east coast and through the northern cities of  Launceston  and  Devonport  and you'll get to taste a great variety of hoppy creations. The trail incorporates tours of the state's two largest breweries - the  Cascade Brewery  in Hobart and  Boag's Brewery  in Launceston - as well as a number of small craft brewers that offer intimate tastings.

Tasmanian Whisky Trail

Tasmania produced the world's best single malt whisky in 2014, and  this trail  connects almost 20 distilleries throughout the island. As well as providing plenty of whisky tastings, it gives you the chance to take in the likes of the former convict prison at  Port Arthur  and postcard-worthy beaches along the east coast. The drive from the capital city of Hobart around to the northern town of  Burnie , returning past a trio of distilleries in the rural Midlands, covers about 900 kilometres (559 miles).

Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail

Cradle Mountain  is one of Tasmania's biggest natural drawcards, and sits in a region that tastes as good as it looks. The  Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail  extends across the north-west of Tasmania, from the city of Launceston to the town of  Smithton , taking in wineries, restaurants, providores, cheese makers, olive growers and more. The straight journey is little more than 200 kilometres (124 miles), but it's worth stretching it over a few days to experience and taste it fully. There are more than 20 producers along the way, as well as farmers markets in Launceston and  Ulverstone , and some great accommodation options linked to the trail.

Made on Bruny Island Gourmet Trail

Long and spectacular  Bruny Island  is like a snapshot of all things great about Tasmanian food, distilled into one smaller island. The  Made on Bruny Island traveller trail  passes many of Bruny's most spectacular sights, including beaches, cliffs and wildlife, as it connects the island's terrific tastes. A full day itinerary will take you past a famed cheese maker, an oyster farm, a whisky house, and a berry farm where you can pick your own fruit. For a gourmet trip mixed with walks and exclusive accommodation, book yourself onto the three-day  Bruny Island Long Weekend  tour. Bruny Island is reached on a short car-ferry crossing from the town of Kettering, about a 30-minute drive from the Tasmanian capital of Hobart.

Great Eastern Drive

The  Great Eastern Drive  runs spectacularly along Tasmania's eastern edge from the quiet beach town of Orford to the fishing centre of St Helens. The 180-kilometre (112-mile) drive is as beautiful as any in Australia, but one of its prime attractions is the opportunity to enjoy the produce that comes from the surrounding land and sea. North of the holiday seaside town of  Swansea , the drive threads between a handful of vineyards. On Freycinet Peninsula, there's fresh-from-the-leases seafood at the  Freycinet Marine Farm , while further ocean treats await at the dockside seafood punts at the drive's end in St Helens.

Tamar Valley Wine Route

A driving loop through Tasmania's foremost wine region, the  Tamar Valley Wine Route  links almost 30 cellar doors north of the likeable city of Launceston. The circuit covers about 170 kilometres (106 miles), running along both banks of the Tamar River. Most vineyards have cellar doors with regular opening hours, while several also offer platters of local produce to complement the wines. The signature wine variety of the region is Pinot Noir, but there are also wonderful sparkling wines, Chardonnays, Rieslings and even fortified wines to taste along the drive.

GT-approved tasting tours of Tasmania

Profile picture of The Gourmet Traveller Team

When you think of Tasmania what springs to mind? For us, it’s regional restaurants , boutique wineries, and local farm gates set against a backdrop of rugged coastlines and pristine views. Take note of our top tasting spots in Tasmania.

gourmet food tours tasmania

No trip to Tasmania is complete without a vineyard visit, and La Villa Wines is a great place to start.

Venture to vineyards

If you have a penchant for cool-climate wine, you’re in the right region. Surrounded by dolerite-capped mountains, Tasmania’s wine areas are abundant with crowd-pleasing grape varieties, from pinot noir to sauvignon blanc.

La Villa Wines

Set on five hectares, this boutique vineyard brings la dolce vita to Tasmania’s north west coast. Inspired by their time living abroad in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, La Villa Wines owners Gail and Marcus produce a variety of delicious wines from low yield premium fruit. Saluti!

Pooley Wines

“Tasmania is special because it’s surrounded by ocean,” says winemaker Anna Pooley. “We have some really exciting and diverse areas for producing wine in Tasmania, where even slight differences in climate equate to a fabulous spectrum of wines.” Burrowed in the heart of the Coal River Valley, this historic cellar door is open every day for wine tastings.

Mayfield Estate

The only thing more impressive than Mayfield Estate’s cool-climate wines is their majestic view from Tasmania’s east coast. With their cellar door opening in 2022 at Little Swanport, the boutique winery looks north to Dolphin Sands and south to the Tasman Sea. This vineyard visit is as much a visual feast as a drinking joy.

Discover dining destinations

With a reputation as a flavour-filled, foodie lover’s heaven, Tasmania boasts some of the country’s hottest restaurants. From design-savvy interiors to innovative menus, here are our top three.

Homestead Restaurant

Freshly shucked Tasmanian Pacific oysters, grass-fed eye fillet, abalone from the surrounding sea, and heirloom vegetables planted by small growers in Launceston… have we piqued your interest (or appetite) yet? Based at Piermont Retreat near Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast, Homestead Restaurant celebrates the region’s diverse flavours in a seasonally inspired menu.

If you’ve an appetite for romance, list this intimate dining experience on your itinerary. The interiors pair warm Tasmanian oak with panoramic views, while everything on the set menu is “cooked over coals or kissed with fire in some way,” according to head chef Timothy Hardy. Designed to stand in harmony with the Turrakana / Tasman Peninsula landscape, this small-scale restaurant sources seasonal produce from organic farmers or their onsite orchards and vegetable gardens.

Black Cow Bistro

Housed in an art deco butchers shop in Launceston, this inviting bistro specialises in grass-fed Tasmanian beef. Each dish is crafted around fresh, local produce and seafood, while the working cellar is stacked with cool-climate Tassie drops and rare bottles from around the world.

Country road trip

Adopt Tasmania’s slow pace of life and indulge in an immersive country experience. Think stopping at roadside stalls with homegrown fruit, meeting local makers, taking a cooking class or embarking on a foraging tour.

Sirocco South foraging tours

Cook and forager Mic Giuliani takes the paddock to plate philosophy to new heights. Join one of his foraging tours to learn how to identify local flavours and handpick ingredients for a long-table, six-course dining experience overlooking Frederick Henry Bay (just east of Hobart).

Hinton Bay Kitchen

Return home from your trip across the Bass Strait with a new recipe. Hinton Bay Kitchen’s cooking school offers private classes at a beautiful home overlooking Hinton Bay (just north of Launceston). Surrounded by water views of the Tamar River and vines of Hinton Bay vineyard, the setting is just as charming as the kitchen itself. Learn about Tasmania’s food culture in a light-filled kitchen.

Unearthed Chefs Tour

Looking for an incredible experience in Tasmania’s north west? Join a full day of explorations on the ‘Tasting Trail Cradle to Coast’ — a food and drink trail designed to showcase the region’s finest produce and artisanal producers. Sample itinerary, event details.

Come and join us for 6 days on this glorious sparkling clean green island. Tasmanian food and wine has gone to new heights and some of the big names are all dear friends so expect a wonderful journey into flavour and the ‘behind the secret door’ experience we deliver on our Gourmet Safaris.

The joy is we stay in one location right on Hobart’s beautiful waterfront. Sullivans Cove Apartments overlook the original historic sandstone IXL jam factory. Each day will be a journey of discovery to meet producers, chefs, winemakers, cheese-makers, foragers and more. We include some of the top restaurants in our itinerary as well as visits to farms and private estates. We also include a day on the ‘island off an island off an island’ – wild, beautiful Bruny Island.

You’ll have a special day of art and food and wine at MONA, taste oysters just out of the cold clear seas, swoon with chocolates and fudge, see cheese being made, have some hands-on food experiences and meet wine producers, whisky distillers, beer and cider makers. Plus enjoy Tasmanian hospitality at local markets and beyond.

Host:  Maeve O’Meara

Kate B – 30 September 2022

“I just wanted to say what a simply superb time I had on the recent trip to Tasmania. It still makes me smile every time I think about any moment of that time & I think about it a lot. I was describing those 6 days to a friend last week & I said it was like someone picked you up out of your everyday life & with a puff of fairy dust, transported you to some bucolic idyll, all of a sudden you are in the middle of a great master’s rural painting, still life or lively tavern scene. Maeve, you have a great way of seeking out life’s magic, and what is even better you share that magic with us mortals!!”

Ross and Christina – Bowral NSW – 30 September 2022

Tasmania May 2022 We thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this Gourmet Safari. It was so well organised, timing, accommodation, exploration and of course the food and wine. Trips to the markets were a real experience and meeting producers who are so passionate about their work and produce as well as providing wonderful background stories so freely given. Day trips to Bruny Island, Fat Pig Farm and the Agrarian Kitchen were informative and a delight. Breakfast at Pigeon Hole Cafe and lunch at Stefano Lubiana Estate ended the food experience perfectly. Mount Field National Park walk took us back to nature and was a favourite of Ross. We truly recommend this, our second Gourmet Safari.

How does a gift certificate work?

Our Gourmet Safaris gift certificates are valid for 12 months and can be used on any of our safaris. You can nominate part or all of the amount of a safari. Safaris range in price from $130 to $165. Bookings can then be made online or over the phone by calling (02) 8969 6555 by the recipient using the gift certificate number.

Do I have to nominate which tour my friend receiving the certificate attends?

No – the beauty of this system is that you give your friend an inspired present and they can choose which Safari and date suits them.

Do I need to be vaccinated to do a tour?

Yes, we require all our attendees to be fully vaccinated

Can I buy gift certificates for more than one person at a time?

Of course. This often happens around Christmas and is easily done in one transaction. You will have a Continue Shopping prompt and be able to fill in details for as many as you’d like.

Why do you need my friend’s mobile number and email address?

This just makes it easier for us if you would like the certificate sent by us to the recipient with your message.

Can I change my booking?

Our terms are “bookings are final at time of payment” but if we receive sufficient notification we can usually make changes for you. (Obviously the more notification the better). Unfortunately if we are notified in the week leading up to the tour, we would be unable to change/cancel/transfer your booking (unless we have people on a wait list and they are able to attend). Bookings are transferrable so if you are unable to attend you can transfer the booking to someone else.

Why are Gourmet Safaris Gift certificates the perfect gift?

We find most people treasure experiences over gathering more stuff. A Gourmet Safari opens up new and delicious worlds and is always a fun day out, whether people are dedicated cooks or just love exploring new flavours and places.

Does Safaris director Maeve attend all the safaris?

As many as she can but each safari is led by experienced guides who have grown up with the food you’ll be exploring. Many live in the neighbourhoods the safaris visit which gives our tours a unique edge. You’re welcome to email or call Safaris manager Suzy to check which safaris Maeve will be attending.  [email protected]  or 02 8969 6555.

Tour includes : 6 days and includes accommodation for 5 nights in Hobart, meals as specified including wine, many tastings, transport on bus and ferry to MONA and Bruny Island, entrance to MONA.
