Grape Escape Winery Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Grape Escape | Oregon Wine Tours | Willamette Valley Oregon

Grape Escape | Oregon Wine Tours | Willamette Valley Oregon

Joinable tours, saturday joinable escape.

On select Saturdays we offer small group tours from Director Park in downtown Portland. We greet at 11am. then take the scenic way to wine country to visit a progression of three wineries. Most are small, off the beaten path vineyards, where you’ll discover and have the opportunity to purchase wines not available elsewhere. During the day, our escape artist (ie guide/driver/host) will share wine country stories and pair food to wine as you taste. No need to bring a lunch. Depending on the day and the group , we usually return between 5 and 6pm.. with new friends and new wines.

Cost is $125 per person That includes everything for your day but gratuity. The easiest way to handle that, is to provide it for your guide at the end of the day. Joinable tours require a minimum of 2 people for the tour to proceed. If you are the first person to book, and are a a party of one, please check back at a later date.

NOTE: Until further notice, we are not running our Joinable Tours

We had a great time on a birthday trip! Ralph was phenomenal - so nice and chill and knowledgeable!! Thanks for a fun time!

Excellent mellow custom wine tour by an uber knowledgeable guide. Highlights: - Guide: Ralph was wonderful. Super friendly and chatty. He gave us so much information about Portland and its history as well as the wine and in depth insight into each winery we visited. We have been on many wine tours in different regions around the world and this is one we learned the most from. - Winery selection: he worked with us ahead of time to determine what we liked. On our request we were taken to smaller less common wineries--even one in a guy's house where we were the only 4 guests! He even provided us a written itinerary with descriptions and reservation times. - Flexible: we ran a bit long at one of the wineries but he didn't rush us and encouraged us to take our time. - Snacks: he brought us some lovely little grilled chicken and brie sandwiches as well as other munchies like kettle potato chips (and even goldfish and string cheese for my lil guy). - Cheese plates: at the last place, Ralph brought us 3 separate cheese and charcuterie plates which was fun and delicious. Midlights: - Transportation was a simple van: nothing fancy for a private tour--but it is Portland. - Not the tour for you if you want to hit a bunch of wineries: we did 3 in 7 hours which was fine with us to fully enjoy each. Lowlights: - Prior he had noted that tasting fees would be waived if we purchased along the way, but we weren't sure what the requirements were. It didn't matter as we liked the wines and naturally chose what ended up filling up a case. We thoroughly enjoyed our Willamette wine day with Ralph. I highly recommend this option from the company if your are wine connoisseurs.

This was the highlight of our bachelorette trip!! Ralph is so organized and picked out some great wineries for us based on the experiences we were looking for. We visited the Beacon Hill Winery, Lenne Estate (which was our favorite), and Tresori. Our guide, Robin, was very knowledgable about the wines and friendly. She gave great tips about the wines as well as explained the history of all the wineries we visited. The food tastings provided were great pairings for the wines we sampled as well. Definitely recommend these guys for winery tours!!

I have to admit that I have never done Yelp before but this company is so professional and so centered on the the happiness of the customer I just can't say enough nice words about them!!

Photo of April Y.

Great wine tour company that creates a visit based on your general wine selection. They will talk to you about what you generally like to drink and what you'd like to see and plan your visit to wine country accordingly. They've got some amazingly knowledgeable tour guides who will give you as much or as little information as you'd like. They also include nibbles during the trip so you can still drink and enjoy your wine without becoming too intoxicated...that is if you choose to swallow the wine. :) I would highly recommend them. Also, this isn't your stretch limo kind of tour but a nice van that takes you from place to place. It's a little less presumptuous and comfortable financially. Make sure to tip!

Our group of 8 had an awesome day! David our guide was so friendly & flexible. Coming from the Bay Area we were looking for something more personal & casual - Grape Escape delivered. Great driving - van was comfortable for our group. He was prepared with waters & amazing snacks for each of our stops & fielded all our questions about the region & wineries. Amazing service! They really made our day of tasting special!

Great company. Ralph picked out some great wineries for us based on the experience we were looking for. David our guide was very knowledgable and friendly. He gave us a great introduction to the area and history as well as technical details on all the wines. The snacks provided were great pairings for the wines we sampled as well. I highly recommend these guys for winery tours in the Williamette Valley.

An awesome and very educational tour. I was surprised by the amount of information we learned in 5 hours. We were the youngest on the tour but we felt like we fit in perfectly. Snacks were provided at each stop and got to try some amazing wines. Highly would recommend this tour to wine drinkers young and old!

Touring Oregon Wine Country with Grape Escape wine tours

Not long ago, I wouldn’t have thought of spending a full day during a Portland Oregon vacation touring the Oregon wine country . I simply wouldn’t have realized it was an option. In fact, the region directly around metropolitan Portland is ripe with wineries, and has been for several decades. During a recent parents’ weekend away in Portland, I spent an early spring Saturday in wine country with Grape Escape Tours , and it was certainly time well-spent. And if you are enjoying Portland with kids , good news: Grape Escape welcomes children on their winery tours, and yes, there’s actually things for them to do.

Domaine Serene Winery

We started our experience with Grape Escape before we even arrived in Portland. As soon as I reached out via their website, owner Ralph Stinton gave me a call to find out where my party’s interests in wine lay, what we hoped to see during our day in wine country, and logistical details about our group. On our scheduled tour date, Ralph met us in the lobby of our Portland hotel where we chatted further about our expectations, our wine knowledge (or lack thereof), and the like. Following our phone conversation, Ralph had designed a personalized itinerary, which he handed out to us. Included on the itinerary were the three wineries we were scheduled to visit, plus our lunch plans and a paragraph of background information on each winery. Right away, we knew we were in good hands.

Grape Escape tour guide Oregon wine country

We loaded into a Grape Escape 12-passenger van, and Ralph told us more about Oregon’s wine country and the wineries we were scheduled to visit as we drove the approximately 30 minutes outside the city. Our customized tour began with smaller boutique winery Alloro Vineyards , located in the Chehalem Mountains. We met owner Dave Nemarnick, who planted the vineyard then built his beautiful Mediterranean inspired winery. It was obvious that Ralph and Grape Escape enjoyed a good working relationship with Alloro and the other wineries we toured; everywhere we went, he was greeted by name, and able to tell us detailed information about the location, the wines we were tasting, and the differences and similarities between Oregon wines and those elsewhere worldwide.

Grape Escape tour van

We lunched at The Allison Inn and Spa in the nearby Willamette Valley, which we had arranged ourselves; had we not, Ralph would have arranged lunch for us. We headed from there to nearby Domaine Serene , a larger winery situated in the Red Hills of Dundee. We were also scheduled to taste at Archery Summit , but Ralph was able to adapt our itinerary when we opted to spend extra time touring The Allison.

Grape Escapes booking tips:

Grape Escape vans comfortably hold up to 12 guests, but caravans are possible if you have a larger group. (Grape Escape has six vans in their fleet.) Ralph is one of several qualified guides, and founded the company 19 years ago. In his words, they ‘grew up’ with the Oregon wine industry, which explains their excellent relationship with the various vineyards.

Rates start at $80 per person for a partial day tour. The tour we enjoyed lasted from 10 am to after 4 pm, and runs $175 per person (the price lowers the larger your group). You’re paying for the transportation, but also for the expertise Grape Escape adds to the experience. The best way to get started is to fill out the form on the website, or call: 503-283-3380.

Oregon wine tasting with kids:

If you’re wine tasting with kids in tow, I’d recommend a half-day tour. I know my children would have gotten restless with a longer day. Ralph and his team know which wineries will be most kid-friendly, such as Stoller Winery , which sports a playground outside. All the wineries we saw included spacious outdoor seating, long rolling lawns, and usually a friendly dog or two. Kids will enjoy being out in the Oregon countryside and will be welcomed by Grape Escape. They’ll also sip sparkling juices and enjoy the same cheese and cracker plates as the adults. Ralph recommends bringing your own car seats, which can be fitted in any of the Grape Escape vans.

As I disclose whenever applicable, we experienced Grape Escape at a media rate, for the purpose of review.

Verde Canyon Railroad has long been a venue for viticulture appreciation. Since 1990 train passengers have enjoyed raising a toast to the Arizona wilderness from well-appointed rail cars, harkening back to a time when relaxing travel by train was recognized as a hallmark of sophistication and class. In 2002 raising that toast became a highly-requested event called the Grape Train Escape. Going in to its 22nd year, this great grape celebration has spanned the planet – Italian, Chilean, Spanish, German and French wines have been served to thousands of awe-inspired train passengers.

*Please note that there are two different ticket options on Saturday night runs so tickets purchased for the Grape Train Escape cannot sit with         Starlight/Moonlight passengers. Services are provided in different cars.

5:30 p.m. every saturday night may 11 through september 14 .

Offered during the 5:30 p.m. Saturday Starlight and Moonlight Trains May through September, a number of the train cars are dedicated to The Grape Train Escape event. Regional purveyors of fine Arizona wines as well as worldwide vintners showcase their award-winning vintages on the rails. Wine tasting coupled with harmonizing appetizers takes one back to a time when relaxing train travel was recognized as a hallmark of sophistication.

Featured wines may change without prior notice.

May 11 – Wines of South America: Chile

We are kicking off our summertime Grape Train Escapes with some of South America’s diverse wines from the wine-growing region of Chile, where the country’s narrow east-west valleys are cooled by breezy currents from the Pacific Ocean. Chilean wines span many varietals, from sparkling to crisp, refreshing whites, and bold world-class reds.

May 25 – Wines of Europe: France

Get onboard Verde Canyon Railroad where your tastebuds will scream “Bon Voyage!” on their way across the Atlantic. Wine was introduced to France by the Etruscans in the years leading up to the Roman Empire incursion more than 2,600 years ago. Producing more fine wine than any other country, French wines are defined by classic varietals with nuanced flavors.

June 1 – Wines of Washington State

We’re bringing the Pacific Northwest right into the Heart of Arizona aboard the Grape Train Escape. A vast temperature swing between daytime highs and nighttime lows and a slow cooling harvest season create Washington’s distinctive wine style. Well-known for blends rather than varietals, innovative technologies and Washington’s pristine natural environment continue to enhance these composed, flavorful wines.

June 8 – Wines from Down Under: Australia and New Zealand

Say “G’day” to the best wines from down under aboard this week’s Grape Train Escape. A strong ocean influence coupled with a warm climate characterize this region known for bright, fruity wines with citrus and fresh herbal notes. Wines made from sweeter grapes that are aged naturally produce a full-bodied taste with elegant and complex flavors.

June 15 – Arizona Wines

This week features incredible wines that are grown right in our own backyard. Arizona’s three major wine-growing regions – Sonoita, Wilcox and Verde Valley – produce superb wines that dare to be shared. The lush Verde Valley, with its sandy soil and abundant sunshine, invites wine enthusiasts to experience wines shaped in a region rich in history and beauty. Savor these award-winning varietals, as well as up-and-coming wines already being celebrated.

June 22 – Mystery Wines

This Verde Canyon Railroad ride features a culmination of the various wines served throughout the Grape Train Escape season. We invite your tastebuds to travel with us to destinations sure to please every wine lover’s palate, with a sensory vacation for casual wine drinkers and connoisseurs alike.

June 29 – Wines of South America: Argentina

Join us for a wine-tasting journey of history, passion and adventure. Spanish immigrants brought wine to Argentina in 1556 A.D., where the unique high altitude of its wine regions and dry climate make for ideal vine-growing conditions. With intense colors and expressive floral aromas, the smooth mouthfeel of these wines is known to contain flavors of cherry or berry.

July 6 – Wines of Europe: Italy

Say “Ciao Bella” to your new favorite wines when the Grape Train Escape features some of the best from Italy. Grown in the country’s warmer and drier climate, these soft, fruity wines are full of rich flavors with hints of classic Mediterranean citrus. With over 355 indigenous vines, a focus on the fruit crafted in the winemaking process characterizes Italian wines, making them widely loved and enjoyed.

July 13- California Wines

With world-class wines right next door to Arizona, this Grape Train Escape features a selection of California’s best. With long growing seasons of warm days and cool nights, where the sun shines year-round, the state’s grape-growing regions yield more than 17 million gallons of wine each year. The warm weather creates sugary grapes that produce sweet wines low in acidity but bold in flavor.

July 20 – Wines from Down Under: Australia and New Zealand

July 27 – Arizona Wines

August 3 – Mystery Wines

August 10 – Wines of South America: Argentina

August 17 – Wines of Europe: Spain

Say “Ole!” to an adventure of culture and history in every sip of Spanish wine sure to stir the soul. Winemaking in Spain dates back at least 3,000 years, when the art of turning grapes into wine was reserved only for priests who produced the luscious liquid for sacrament and religious celebrations. Using classic vinification techniques that have been passed on through generations, these Old World wines are heavier with fresh, balanced flavors.

August 24 – Wines of Oregon State

Sip Oregon’s finest wines among Arizona’s grandest views on this week’s Grape Train Escape. In a valley with a variety of soils sheltered from extreme weather, the very cool climate in Oregon ripens grapes slowly while building character in the fruit. The process produces nuanced, subtle wines that are high in acidity with intense colors and spicy aromas.

August 31- Wines from Down Under: Australia and New Zealand

September 7 – Arizona Wines

September 14 – Mystery Wines

A Sensory Adventure

Savoring wine while soaking in the scenery of the Southwest has rapidly become world-famous here in Arizona’s Verde Valley, and it is quickly gaining notoriety as one of the finest regions for grape growing. In addition, it is a region where the appreciation of these varietals becomes more enjoyable while basking in high desert beauty.

During the Saturday Starlight Tours, passengers experience a spectacular blend of light and color in the canyon ranging from bright daytime to rich sunset, from twinkly twilight to magnificent moonglow. Paired with an award-winning wine in hand, any Grape Train Escape will contribute to a sensory adventure suitable for every palate.
