College Visits Part #1: Mapping Out Your College Visits

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of connecting with a prospective student visiting campus. She enlightened me on the value of visiting campus when she shared her story;  “Aside from my goals academically, I was told by a family member to visit and pay attention to the current students…if I enjoyed interacting with them, could see myself being friends with them, and felt as if I wanted to be like them — then this was the college for me. I need to see myself in others at the college, because I could become that person someday.”  An interesting perspective, right? Imagine the potential of visiting an environment that provides insight of your future self. Can you see yourself being friends with people in the community? Do you feel excited about learning in this environment? Will you be challenged to become the best version of yourself? The only way to know the answer to these questions, as it relates to your college search, is to step foot on campus and immerse yourself into all aspects of the college. The college search process poses many questions you’ll have to answer on your own, but let me help by answering a few questions you may have in finding the right college for you.  The first answer is – “ Visit Us! ”

Who can visit?

This may depend on the type of visit you are taking part in. For example, mom and dad will most likely not be allowed to stay with you during an overnight visit. With day visits such as a tour or informational session or large events, most schools would encourage family members to attend.

When can a student start visiting colleges? At Grove City, we welcome anyone to visit campus! Seniors and Juniors are most likely to visit campus as they begin their college search, however, we welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about the College.

When can I visit?

Most schools provide several options for visiting campus throughout the year, but I’ll share that it is best to visit when the college is in session and students are on campus. Remember my conversation I mentioned above; we want you to interact with current students (and faculty). If you come when the campus is alive, that will be the best indicator in determining whether or not the environment is the right fit for you!

An ideal timeline would be to do a general, informative visit sometime throughout your junior year of high school. This visit should include an opportunity to learn about the school, the academic department you’re interested in, financial aid opportunities and the application process. I would then recommend doing a more in-depth follow up visit during the Fall of your senior year of high school. During this visit you want to get a good picture of what your life would look like as a student here. Attend classes if given the opportunity, stay overnight with a student host, attend a team practice if you’re interested in playing a sport, eat in the cafeteria, and most importantly ask current students questions . Don’t be afraid to probe them for information on their favorite and least favorite aspects of the college.

I realize that you all have very busy schedules and some of you may live on the other side of the country and multiple visits are not possible. Not to worry! There are other ways you can get to know a college. Ask your Admissions Counselor to connect you with current students and alumni who share common interests perhaps by field of study or extracurricular activity. You can also ask them if they have the ability to connect you with an alumnus who lives in your area. That way you can meet face-to-face with someone and really get the scoop on the college.

If you are a senior and just beginning your college search, don’t panic! You have plenty of time to conduct a strategic and thorough search, but you will need to be proactive about it.

If you are considering visiting Grove City College, here are a few options to consider:

Personal Visit:

Personal visits become what you make them. At Grove City College, we strongly encourage you to interview or attend a question and answer session with our Admission Counselors to learn more about the College. We can also set up an opportunity for you to take a walking campus tour, visit a class of your choice, enjoy lunch or dinner in our dining hall, and schedule an overnight stay with a current student. Learn more and set up your appointment here .

Open House Events:

Starting in the fall, we plan several Open Houses that showcase the college’s top-tier academic programs and provide a sense of student life at Grove City College.  Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about our challenging academics, meet current faculty and students, take a walking tour of campus, and enjoy dining in our cafeterias. Learn more and register here .

Virtual Tour:

If you simply can’t make it to campus, our Virtual Tour is an alternative to seeing the campus. You’ll have the opportunity to browse campus, learn our story, and look inside our state-of-the-art buildings. Click here to take your virtual tour .

If you started your college search, I’m confident you’ll be receiving countless brochures and catalogues to educate you about each college and how they differ from the next.  Perhaps you already attended presentations by college representatives or your guidance counselor, and maybe you’re starting to browse college websites and follow them on social media.  These interactions have the potential to form your opinion of a school, but it’s nearly impossible to evaluate your fit based on promotional literature. I hope you will consider visiting colleges this fall to experience first hand the environment, academics, housing, and the social life of each school. At Grove City College, we want you to visit and determine if we’re the right fit for YOU. Your decision should be based on where you feel most comfortable – academically and socially. It is not uncommon for a student to think that a college is right for them based on brochures and media, but later find out that it is not right fit. It’s best to explore your options before you arrive in the fall with your bags and books in hand!

Moscow, Idaho: A Hip College Town Worth a Visit

Moscow, idaho, a liberal hole in the donut.

By Lindsay Redifer

Where? Located about an hour away from Spokane , Washington in the heart of Idaho’s mountains.

WHY GO Moscow is nestled in the heart of some of Idaho’s most scenic mountains. It overlooks rolling hills and enjoys some of the most beautiful sunsets in the northwest. Moscow is a very liberal community, often honored by visiting authors, festivals, and plenty of local talent.

Every year new musical groups form and more local writers are published. Moscow is home to the University of Idaho, the host of the annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival . Lionel Hampton himself used to come before he passed away in 2002. Enjoy hundreds of jazz musicians young and old who perform for the students of the UI and their guests. There are also workshops, jam sessions, and opportunities to meet all of the musicians while they’re off the stage.

Perhaps the best reason to visit Moscow, ID is the people. Moscow’s main focus is the community, making the locals some of the friendliest people in the West.

Moscow is in bloom in the spring. This is a great time of year to visit the campus, see student artwork, and traverse the streets of downtown. February is our annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Moscow community. Our summers are balmy and breezy. Stay a weekend or a month, either way, you’ll hate to leave.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND

By Plane Planes fly into both Lewiston, Idaho, (fifteen minutes away), and Spokane, Washington, (one hour away). From there you can rent a car or take a bus!

By Car You can drive to Moscow, Idaho if you live in one of the neighboring states.

Getting Around

Moscow is a great town to walk or ride your bike in. Feel free to drive, but keep in mind that everything is close together so hardly any time is lost during a leisurely walk. If you want to go beyond Moscow you can ride the commuter bus to Pullman, (an eight-mile drive), and back again. If you have a student with you, you ride for free.

BEST ATTRACTIONS

Downtown Moscow is filled with great food and lots of curio shops. Also, every Saturday morning in downtown’s Friendship Square is an authentic Farmer’s Market . There one can find fresh vegetables, ethnic jewelry, fresh bread, and live entertainment. A visit to the Jazz Festival ensures hundreds of attractions every day. Just pick up a program and choose from concerts, speeches, intimate performances, and workshops.

BEST UNUSUAL ATTRACTIONS

All of Moscow is a little off-beat, but there are still extremes worth trying out. There are also centers of worship for Buddhists, Baha’i, Mormons, Christian Scientists, and Hindus. Just outside of Moscow in a town called Genesee is a Tao hermitage that is open during the Spring and Summer (call ahead).

BEST ACTIVITIES

Stop by the Moscow Information Center on Main Street for any information about the town. Also, don’t hesitate to ask one of the natives for any advice or directions.

BEST ALTERNATIVES

The Moscow Yoga Center holds lessons for dance, yoga, NIA, and Ecstatic Dance. Meditation is also taught and the local practitioners of the Sufi faith hold their Dances of Universal Peace there. The more adventurous travelers might want to try camping on Moscow Mountain. There are many great sites and it’s a short drive from town.

Moscow, Idaho

BEST LODGINGS

There are lodgings at the University Inn and several other small hotels. Trailers and motorhomes are welcome as well.

There’s plenty to choose from as far as food in Moscow. Basilio’s offers traditional Italian, seafood, and steak at reasonable prices. The Pita Pit is a favorite among students for fast, healthy food and late hours. Here are reviews of the restaurants in Moscow from TripAdvisor.

Mikey’s Gyros offers exceptional Greek food and live performances are guaranteed on Thursday or Friday nights. The Moscow Food Co-Op recently opened a small cafe for those wanting natural, vegetarian food.

BEST ENTERTAINMENT

The entertainment in Moscow is often given by visiting artists. However, there is almost always a visiting artist in town. Operas, African dance troops, international symphonies, and Broadway acting troops are never far away.

Also, don’t miss some of the local actors. The UI campus has several theaters and lots of performances year-round of locally written and Broadway plays. Check out the annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in February! [email protected]

BEST LOCAL HAUNT

Book People, a unique bookstore in Moscow, Idaho.

One of the most popular places in town is the small bookstore named Book People. Here one can relax with a magazine and a cup of coffee, search for rare books or enjoy a poetry reading.

BEST SHOPPING Downtown offers some of the most diverse shopping. With the Farmer’s Market, antique shops, bookstores, coffee shops, and music stores, it has plenty to offer any visitor.

Moscow also has the Palouse Mall , which is connected to a Michael’s, Jo-Ann’s Fabric, a Rite-Aid, and a Hastings.

MONEY AND COMMUNICATIONS Money is not anything worth stressing over in Moscow. The most expensive meal in town is about $20.00 and the cheapest is around $4.00. Remember that Moscow is a college town so prices tend to be more than reasonable.

BEST RESOURCES Moscow’s gems often seem hidden, but don’t be afraid to go digging for them. Keep your eyes open for flyers announcing events, ads in the paper, and posters all around town. City of Moscow www.moscow.id.us www.moscow.com Moscow Chamber of Commerce www.moscowchamber.com

who writes these articles 🤣🤣 this guy has never been here and don’t bother coming, we don’t want you here anyways 🤣

What the hell, it seems like you haven’t been to Moscow before. We don’t have any of those restaurants and Mingles is not a recommendation for food. It’s a wonderful town but this looks to be written by someone who has no idea about this place.

This was written a very long time ago when this information would have been accurate.

UMKC students set up campus ‘Liberation Zone’ to protest war in Gaza

University of Missouri - Kansas City students protest the war in Gaza and police actions against protesters on other college campuses.

Protesters gathered Monday afternoon in solidarity with other college students around the country who have been calling for the U.S. to withhold military aid to Israel.

About 100 students gathered in a grove behind the University of Missouri - Kansas City’s Miller Nichols Library on Monday to set up a “Liberation Zone” in protest of ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza. They joined campuses around the country that have seen similar demonstrations in recent weeks.

“We do this in solidarity with every single campus, especially the ones where we’re seeing voices be shut down,” said Mahmoud Kutmah, vice president of the campus group Students for Justice in Palestine.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by UMKC Students for Justice in Palestine (@umkcsjp)

The protesters brought both camping-style enclosed tents and open-sided sunshade tents, as well as hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. There was a tense moment when UMKC Police took down a tent and threw it in a truck while its owner tried unsuccessfully to wrestle it away.

UMKC director of strategic communications Stacy Downs said in an email that UMKC policy specifically prohibits “camping or the use of temporary shelters (e.g., tents).” UMKC’s facilities policy does not allow any university building or grounds to be occupied as living rooms or bedrooms unless they are explicitly for that purpose. Downs said that policy has also been applied to prohibit camping on campus.

“Our university policies encourage freedom of expression for all members of our campus, as long as they model safe, respectful interaction, don’t present any safety concerns and don’t disrupt normal operations of our campus,” the university said in a statement.

Ikemba Shabazz, a Kansas City resident who’s not a student, said he “just wanted to make sure the people were protected.”

He said UMKC police told him guns weren’t allowed on campus, so took the gun off campus and returned to the rally.

As of late afternoon, the group of protesters intended to wrap up after an evening prayer at 9:30 p.m. and return the next day.

Students pray at the "Liberation Zone" on UMKC's campus on April 29, 2024.

Kutmah said the students have a list of demands for the university, including that it make a distinction between antisemitism and anti-Zionism so students are not labeled antisemitic for protesting actions by the Israeli government. The group also wants to know where UMKC’s endowment has investments, and whether it includes companies that “are complicit with, and enable, the genocide and apartheid that’s happening to the Palestinian people,” Kutmah said.

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, who was held by police for seven hours after her Saturday arrest during a Gaza protest on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, came to speak to the crowd a little before 5 p.m. She told KCUR she intends to visit the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence on Tuesday.

“Freedom for Gaza, Gaza will be free,” she told the assembled students. “As a health care provider, I have felt from the start here, as a mother I have felt as so many of us have felt, like we are watching a genocide, like we are watching two million people who could be on the verge of extinction right now.”

Police arrest pro-Palestinian supporters at encampment on Yale University plaza

Police officers   Monday arrested protesters who had set up an encampment on Yale University’s campus   in support of the Palestinian cause,   one of a  growing number of American universities  where there have been demonstrations surrounding the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Protesters had been on their third night of camping out to urge Yale to divest from military weapons manufacturers, the Yale Daily News reported.

Officers gathered at the protest site at Beinecke Plaza shortly before 7 a.m. Monday   and were   seen approaching the encampment and “flipping up the entrances to the tents,” the school paper wrote on X.

Then officers issued a warning for students and journalists to leave or they’d be arrested. Minutes later, the school paper wrote on X that police were arresting people.

In total, 47 students were issued summonses, Yale said in a statement Monday.

After a third night of camping out, Police officers arrested protesters in support of the Palestinian cause on Yale University’s campus on April 22, 2024.

They were taken to a Yale police facility, where they were processed, charged with first-degree criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, and released, the New Haven mayor’s office said.

The arrests

The university said protesters were asked to leave and remove their belongings after officials had “notified protesters numerous times” that if they violated university policies about occupying outdoor spaces, they could face law enforcement and disciplinary action. Some left voluntarily Monday morning.

Those arrested will also be referred for Yale disciplinary action, “which includes a range of sanctions, such as reprimand, probation, or suspension,” the university said.

By 8 a.m., no students were left on the plaza, and all protesters remaining on the plaza had been arrested.

"The university made the decision to arrest those individuals who would not leave the plaza with the safety and security of the entire Yale community in mind and to allow access to university facilities by all members of our community," Yale said Monday.

A statement on the Instagram page for the Yale protest organizers under the handle “Occupy Beinecke” said Monday that police had given only one arrest warning and refused to allow protesters to collect medication and other necessities.

“When asked onsite what protesters were doing wrong, police refused to give an answer,” the group said. Organizers also said the summons for criminal trespassing charges was “contrary to all prior communication from administration about potential consequences.”

After the arrests, a crowd of over 200 protesters blocked the intersection of Grove and College streets on campus as organizers “announced that people arrested are being charged with Class A misdemeanors,” the school paper wrote on X.

Forty police officers were reported to be at the scene, blocking students from entering the Schwarzman Center Rotunda.

After a third night of camping out, Police officers arrested protesters in support of the Palestinian cause on Yale University’s campus on April 22, 2024.

New Haven police said they had no plans to make "any arrests of non-violent protesters" at that demonstration, which was still ongoing at of 10 a.m. ET.

Yale police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Protests unfolding at universities across the U.S.

Another Ivy League institution, Columbia University in New York City, held classes virtually Monday following a pro-Palestinian encampment and protest that also resulted in mass suspensions and arrests.

Three Boston-area universities, Tufts, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Emerson, also had protest encampments over the weekend, organizers said.

Meanwhile, Harvard restricted access to Harvard Yard — a grassy area enclosed by fences on campus — through Friday afternoon. The school paper, The Harvard Crimson , reported the decision was “in apparent anticipation of student protests.” A notice posted on Yard gates said that “structures, including tents and tables, are not permitted in the Yard without prior permission” and that “students violating these policies are subject to disciplinary action.”

The University of Southern California in Los Angeles was criticized last week after it canceled the speech of a valedictorian whose social media account had a link to a document expressing support for Palestinians in Gaza. USC said it decided to cancel the speech based on concerns over  security and the possibility of disruption .

After a third night of camping out, Police officers arrested protesters in support of the Palestinian cause on Yale University’s campus on April 22, 2024.

Protests call for Yale to divest from military weapons manufacturers

Yale has been under “months of sustained pressure” to disclose and divest from investments in military weapons manufacturers, Occupy Beinecke said.

However, on Wednesday, Yale said its Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility would not recommend divestment because it had concluded that “military weapons manufacturing for authorized sales did not meet the threshold of grave social injury” and because “this manufacturing supports socially necessary uses, such as law enforcement and national security.”

University President Peter Salovey sa id in a statement Sunday that they understood the disagreement with the ACIR decision.

“The ACIR—a committee of faculty, students, staff, and alumni—arrived at this conclusion after hearing from student presenters and engaging in careful deliberation. This is part of a formal process and relies on the university’s guide to ethical investing that has served Yale well for decades,” the statement said. “There are available pathways to continue this discussion with openness and civility, and I urge those with suggestions to follow them.”

The statement Sunday said the protests in Beinecke Plaza and other parts of campus “have grown significantly over the weekend, and some members of the broader community have joined our students.”

While the school “supports free speech and civil discourse,” the encampment protest violated some university guidelines and policies, which school leaders warned participants about.

“Putting up structures, defying the directives of university officials, staying in campus spaces past allowed times, and other acts that violate university policies and guidelines create safety hazards and impede the work of our university,” Salovey wrote.

While many students participating in protests and counter protests “have done so peacefully,” the school was aware of reports of “egregious behavior, such as intimidation and harassment, pushing those in crowds, removal of the plaza flag, and other harmful acts,” the statement said.

After a third night of camping out, Police officers arrested protesters in support of the Palestinian cause on Yale University’s campus on April 22, 2024.

Yale separately told NBC News on Sunday that university police were “investigating a report of an assault” during a protest on Beinecke Plaza, adding it was “providing support to a student who made the report.”

The officials stressed: “Yale does not tolerate actions, including remarks, that threaten, harass, or intimidate members of the university’s Jewish, Muslim, and other communities,” and school police are investigating such actions.

CORRECTION (April 22, 2024, 6:20 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article misstated who signed Yale University’s statement Sunday. It was signed by university President Peter Salovey, who is also the Chris Argyris professor of psychology. It was not also signed by Argyris, the late professor for whom Salovey’s endowed position is named.

U of I Locations: Moscow (Main Campus)

From the moment you step on campus, you’ll understand why the University of Idaho has been named the most beautiful college in the state . Iconic buildings are connected by tree-filled green spaces, walkable paths and welcoming plazas. Don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a friendly smile and wave from a peer or professor, especially on the historic Hello Walk.

Our community extends way beyond campus. Moscow is a tight-knit town of about 25,000 people, full of vibrant activities, businesses and events that love to welcome college students. You’ll find incredible opportunities for recreation and exploration in the surrounding area, too.

Want to see it all for yourself? Plan your campus visit today .

Life on Campus

Whether you live in the residence halls , a fraternity or sorority or off-campus, you’ll be minutes away from your classes and places to study and play.

There’s always something to do: grab a snack in the Idaho Student Union Building , check out a book from the U of I Library 's more than 2 million holdings, take in the beauty of nature in the Arboretum and Botanical Garden , watch a play in the Hartung Theater  or a game in the ICCU Arena , take a fitness class in the Student Recreation Center , catch a Vandal Entertainment -sponsored concert and so much more.

A True College Town

Venture only a few minutes off campus and you’ll be in downtown Moscow. It’s no wonder Seattle Magazine called it “a college town with a soul that shines through year-round” — the calendar is packed with festivals, cultural events and community gatherings like our award-winning farmers’ market on Main Street.

No matter what you like to do, you’ll find an activity to fall in love with . Experience a local art museum or theater production, dance to a live band at a street fair or a local coffee shop, dress in period garb for the Moscow Renaissance Fair or enter a local 5K run or bike race. Volunteer opportunities abound with local nonprofits that support the arts, sustainability, youth and children, the LGBTQ community, health care and more.

And did we mention food? You’ll find a huge co-op with natural and organic options, cozy pubs and coffee shops with Pacific Northwest vibes, locally owned restaurants with cuisines from around the world, and funky hole-in-the-wall spots for affordable college-town snacks.

A Hub For Outdoor Adventure

Moscow sits at the heart of the Palouse, a one-of-a-kind landscape of rolling hills and scenic vistas. We’re surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers full of opportunities for adventure , whether you love hiking, biking, camping, fishing or just taking in a gorgeous sunset. You’ll experience all four seasons in North Idaho, too — so bring your sunscreen for a late-summer rafting trip and your parka for skiing, snowboarding or ice skating in the winter.

Gain outdoor skills and connect with other adventurous students through the U of I Outdoor Program . Want to take your own excursion? Rent equipment through the Outdoor Rental Center .
