Submit an event, 'guilt trip coffee' - warriors duo open up on venture into coffee and donuts, 'a duo full of beans' - warriors front-row reveal all ahead of grand opening of 'guilt trip coffee'.

"Industrial, minimalistic look with an edgy vibe" - Warriors business partners Callum Black and Nick ‘Sharky’ Schonert reveal all about 'Guilt Trip Coffee' and their venture into the world of coffee and donuts.

‘Guilt Trip’ is a café/fresh donut shop that first started with one outlet in Northern Ireland whilst Black was with Ulster and now, Black is bringing the brand to Worcester, with two outlets set to open their doors this side of Christmas.

Ahead of their opening next month, Worcester News sat down with the Warriors’ front row duo to talk all things guilty.

Black takes us back to his days with Ulster, where his passion for coffee first began.

“I never really drank coffee until then,” Black said.

“The independent coffee scene in Belfast is pretty big and that was my first experience of speciality coffee and I was pretty much hooked from then.

“I started drinking coffee at home in a big way and started making it at home and got really into it and then thought, after a while, I might as well give it a go a business venture.

“So in 2017 with fellow Ulster player at the time, Darren Cave, we went into business, we came up with concept of coffee and donuts to start with and tried to really perfect those two things.

“It was the best speciality coffee we could get our hands on, new roasters every month from Europe and further afield and then also making donuts fresh, from scratch, in house every day.”

Black then explained how they went about trying to make Guilt Trip coffee into something a little bit more than just a coffee shop that sells coffee and donuts.

“We got together with a branding team,” he went on.

“We tried to create something that was more than just a coffee shop, kind of like a destination and create that whole brand around it.

“We wanted it to be a place where people travel to and want to come to, we are a destination, a stop off on your journey.

“It’s quite an industrial, minimalistic look with an edgy vibe, think that’s the best way to put it.”

Whilst the brand was a major focus, Black emphasised that the quality of the produce on offer was and always will be the main concept.

“A big thing for us is we never wanted to compromise quality for quantity,” Black said.

“The focus was simply making the best donuts and coffee every single day.

“That was in 2017, when opened our first store, it was received pretty well from the start and we were lucky in that respect.

“We then opened our second store in July in Northern Ireland on the north coast, with plans to open a third one in December there as well.”

This is where Nick, AKA ‘Sharky’ came in.

“Since I came back to Worcester two years ago, I always wanted to bring Guilt Trip to England.” Added Black.

“Sharky (Nick Schonert) came to me with a business interest.

“He was keen on looking at opening a coffee shop and at the time I was keen on forming partnerships and trying to bring ‘Guilt Trip’ to England and if he was keen on it and he was so here we are now.”

Nick expressed his amazement at how successful the store in Northern Ireland was when he visited and admits his love for donuts may well have had a role to play…

“Cal told me that I had to see it to experience it,” Nick said.

“So I did and when we were on our way there in the car I kid you not, there was cue of about 20/25 people coming back outside a building and I thought it was like an ATM or something.

“But then as we got closer, Cal said, that’s the shop.

“I got out and that’s when I realised it was for the shop and I just thought, it’s just donuts right? But after I had consumed 12 of them I figured out why, even if I was a few seconds away from being a full-blown diabetic!”

Callum admits that the whole concept of Guilt Trip is to act as a destination, a stop off point on a journey somewhere and he feels it lends itself perfectly for social media, which is so important for a brand to be successful.

“It’s very big in America (coffee and donuts),” he said.

“Down in Dublin it’s big as well and now I think people appreciate good coffee and freshly made donuts more.

“The brand also helps as it has this destination feel where you can hang out, it lends itself quite well for social media.”

Nick added that part of his decision to team up with Callum was based on his close friend’s clear passion for the business and a vision for the future.

“I have always roomed with Callum on away trips or whatever and Cal would always be taking up the whole room with his coffee stuff,” he said.

“You know how most girlfriends or wives take up the whole bathroom with all their products? That’s what Cal is like with his coffee.

“I was like, this guy is really into this coffee thing.

“I see Callum as a class mate of mine and he approached me and said if I would ever be interested in joining him then we could talk about it.

“I spoke to my folks about it and they said you should never go into something for the brand itself, you invest in the people.

“Without blowing too much smoke up him, Callum has surrounded himself with good people.

“For me it was a no brainer and it’s been a hell of a learning curve but the sense of pride you must get from running a well established outfit must be sensational so if I can have just a taste of what he has then I am in.

“So when he came to me, it was just like, give me then pen, where do I sign?”

The plan is for the two new outlets to be open this side of Christmas but official dates are yet to be confirmed.

Cult doughnut and coffee shop is opening in Cheltenham

Cheltenham foodies can indulge their guilty pleasures when speciality doughnut and coffee shop, Guilt Trip, brings its decadent sweet treats to town – and its new store outside Regent Arcade is now open!

There's an exciting new place for Gloucestershire foodies to get their sweet fix, with Guilt Trip's latest doughnut and coffee shop now open in Cheltenham. 

With popular shops in Worcester and Broadway already, Guilt Trip is well-known for its handmade doughnuts, killer coffee and striking motorcycle-themed décor – and it's bringing it all to Cheltenham's vibrant food scene with its brand-new store, which opened on Saturday 11 February 2023.

Customers can get their hands on its signature flavours and fan favourites like the  blueberry cheesecake – a blueberry glazed doughnut filled with cream cheese and melted white chocolate – and the espresso glaze, a ringed doughnut coated in a coffee glaze and topped with Biscoff spread and Oreo crumbs.

Guilt Trip often switches its flavours up for the season, introducing special doughnuts throughout the year, but always keeps its classics in stock, as well as serving a menu of oozing toasties and piping-hot bakes.

All of its ring doughnuts are vegan-friendly, too, giving plant-based customers plenty of choice.

The new store is located in the old Harper and Cooper opticians store on Ormond Place, right outside Regent Arcade shopping centre – in a convenient town centre location for hungry locals to indulge their guilty pleasures.

On the outskirts of Worcester on Weir Lane industrial estate, 7 miles from the hilly climbs of Malvern and beyond. They've also a shop in Worcester city centre at 54 Friar Street, WR1 2NA (Mon - Sun, 9:00 - 16:00)

As the name suggests we adore cake, but we also can’t resist a great doughnut (is it donut or doughnut?) when out on our bike too! Made in-house and fresh each day, you can be sure of a hipster mid-cycle sugar fix alongside great tasting coffee.

Their ten flavours include blueberry and white chocolate cheesecake, rasberry ruffle, espresso glaze, salted caramel and fudge, biscoff, boston cream and your traditional jam dougnut. Check their menu for more :). Our favourite is the boston cream with it’s goey vanilla centre.

Inside you’ll find a chic and modern interior with friendly staff, polished concrete, neon signs and the glorious smell of coffee.

Located on the outskirts of Worcester on Weir Lane, it’s just 7 miles from the hilly climbs of Malvern, the riverside town of Upton upon Severn and a stones throw from Worcester city centre.

Within the city of Worcester you’ll also find their second doughnut shop, located on 54 Friar Street, Worcester, WR1 2NA (Mon – Sun, 9:00 – 16:00), within reach of Worcester Cathedral and the River Severn.

Locations: Guilt Trip have a handful of dougnuts shops in Northern Ireland and England. We’ve visited all 3 of their sites here in the England; both their Worcester stores (including HQ) and the latest shop in the picturesque Cotswold village of Broadway.

Like everywhere else in Broadway, if you are in a wheelchair you are stuffed. However, the very nice proprietor of Guilt Trip Coffee put a table outside for mum and me so we could enjoy our drink and donut. Lovely thing to do, would definitely... recommend. More

Popped in when on a walk, it was very slow service with just one person working behind the counter. The lady also got our drinks order wrong but we didn’t want to wait again for her to correct them as the drinks took a very... long time to make. Doughnuts were ok we’ve had better though and they’re very expensive. More

We stumbled across this coffee shop on our 2nd date, it was lovely. The staff greeted us with a warm welcome and provided an extensive list of donut options. We had the apple crumble and the espresso, so delicious we went for seconds!! Thank you... Guilt Trip! Avoid crispy creme.....they can't even spell 🤣😂 More

Second visit to Guilt Trip, its been a while but won't be returning. The doughnuts are good but not amazing but that was the only positive. Staff were indifferent verging on rude, luke warm milky water served as tea in a small disposable cup for... £2.80, doughnuts and sausage rolls served in paper carrier bags, no thought there for the environment as no option to sort waste for recycling or to use proper plates/cups. Extremely overpriced for the service and quality. More

Visited on a chilled sunday morning, but unfortunately the visit was anything but chilled. Service was poor, and the staff made us feel as though we were inconveniencing them. Hardly spoke, and threw the card machine on the side for us to pay. The doughnuts... themselves were swarmed in wasps with no screen to keep them out or deter them. Safe to say we just went for a coffee. The coffee itself was bitter and for the price we paid we expected more (£7+ for 2 coffees). The place itself was really warm and stuffy with no atmosphere. We’ve visited the branch on Friar Street and also in Broadway, both of which were a much better experience and I would suggest visiting those over this branch. Won’t be rushing back! More

We are big fans of the Guilt Trip store in town so on a recent walk to Diglis bridge along the river we were very excited to see they've opened one up on Weir lane, its a very short walk off the river path, opposite... side to the Cathedral. Its not set in the most glamorous of places but the donuts and coffee are to die for here so no ones really looking at the views! More

Best Donuts I have ever eaten . Staff was very friendly . Lovely family feel especially with the bakery on site I had a hot chocolate and was offered cream with marshmallows .. was delicious

Second time we have visited recently and both times made to feel like we were an inconvenience being there. Customer service is awful, no greeting and hardly any choice of donuts at lunchtime. Ordered a box of 6 and straight away filled the cabinet with... fresh more choice once we had exited the shop. Considering the price of the donuts and coffee, it puts you off going there. More

Amazing biscoff, cinnamon sugar and mango doughnuts; perfect fluffy texture and well balanced flavours, would definitely return :)

Excellent coffee, excellent service and excellent donuts! An all round great experience- my husband and I will definitely be back! Yum!
