This unique set of rugged volcanic islands is well-known across the world, and for good reason; it’s a destination like no other.

There are towering volcanoes and rumbling craters to explore, a dense interior of tall cliffs and wild forests, and a packed coastline of beaches and surf.

Oahu might only be the third-largest island in the Hawaiian chain, but it’s the heart of the state.

This is where most of the locals live and where most visitors arrive on holiday – being the site of the capital and largest city, Honolulu, and the famous tourist strip at Waikiki.

It’s the best island to base yourself from in order to explore not only the many incredible sights on Oahu but the surrounding islands of Kauai and Maui too.

1. Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is the most iconic and perhaps infamous site in Hawaii.

The harbor is found on Oahu, close to the city of Honolulu, and most visitors to the island will find themselves travelling here at some point during their trip to pay respects and find out more about the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese that led to the US taking on Japan during World War II. The event is one of the most studied, talked about, and documented incidents in American history, and seeing the harbor itself may help to understand what really happened here.

There is a lot to see and learn at Pearl Harbor, from the battle-ravaged airplane hangars to the bullet holes and shrapnel scars that have been left across the harbor.

2. USS Arizona Memorial

Perhaps the most interesting of the memorials to be found on Hawaii and in Pearl Harbor is the memorial to the USS Arizona.

This navy warship was one of the most unfortunate ships in the harbor when the Japanese attacked – it was sunk by torpedoes.

It still rests on the bottom of the ocean today, where it sunk many decades ago.

The visitor’s center takes people out onto the water to see the ship itself and to walk through the dedicated memorial that has been erected over the wreck.

It’s a moving exhibit and a must-see sight on Oahu.

3. Punchbowl Cemetery

The Punchbowl Cemetery is another important historical site on Oahu that, like Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona, should be visited to learn more about the island’s integral role in the Pacific and in American history.

The official name of this humbling cemetery is the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific; it’s a lasting tribute to all those who lost their lives fighting in World War II against the Japanese.

The cemetery is found in an unusual but beautiful location within Punchbowl Crater – a large, dormant volcano that overlooks Honolulu.

4. Waikiki Beach

If you are traveling to Hawaii and staying on Oahu, there’s a high chance that you may be staying along Waikiki Beach, because it’s one of the most popular and well-developed areas in the state.

If you aren’t staying here already, then it’s most definitely worth at least a day trip while you are on Oahu.

Popular for good reason, it’s stunning, it’s energetic, and it’s one of the best places to visit in the perfect location close to Honolulu.

5. Honolulu

You may have visited Hawaii for beaches and scenery rather than for the city life, but Honolulu – the largest and most populated city in the state – is the center of life amongst these Pacific Islands and is full of local culture, restaurants, and history.

The best way to explore is on foot, walking along the shorefront before turning into the streets to explore what life is all about here on Oahu.

It’s a city, yes, but it’s a laid-back, Hawaiian-style city – a place that just a few hundred years ago was a small village and somehow has still retained that vibe even in the midst of the expansion and all the visitors that pass through this gateway to Oahu.

6. Diamond Head

One of the best day trips that can be undertaken from Oahu is a hike to the summit of the Diamond Head volcano.

Diamond Head is a huge, prominent crater that quite literally overshadows Honolulu and Waikiki Beach.

From the streets and the white sand below, you’ll see the crater staring down at you.

Eventually, curiosity will prevail and you’ll want to attempt the hike to the lookout.

The way up is steep, following a long trail that for much of the way is filled out with concrete steps.

The crater at the summit is enormous – but better than the views looking out over this are the views over the island and of the city far below.

Being so close to Honolulu, it makes for a popular trip, so leave early for the cooler temperatures and to get up there before everyone else.

7. Hanauma Bay State Park

Found along the southern, easternmost tip of Oahu, along the coast from Honolulu, Hanauma State Park is the most accessible park and one of the best places in Hawaii to snorkel.

There’s an incredibly rich and diverse array of marine life to be found in the waters of Hawaii, and the entire area is a well-protected conservation area.

The plethora of fish species under the surface and amongst the coral reefs is almost unbelievable, and it’s all easily reached from the beach on the coast, in relatively shallow water.

The beach and the coastline are just as spectacular, but it’s still really all about the marine life at Hanauma Bay.

8. North Shore Beaches

Hawaii is famed for its beautiful beaches, and if you are looking for a holiday full of sun and sand, then Oahu is the best choice.

Waikiki might be the most visited beach, but for those looking for somewhere quieter and less developed, there are plenty of opportunities along the island’s spectacular coastline.

The best place to visit to experience beach life on Oahu is the North Shore.

Here, there are endless stretches of sand, each unique and each different.

Best Oahu Island Luaus

You can’t visit Hawaii without an authentic Hawaiian Celebration! Traditional dancing, as well as food, are a great way to experience an authentic Hawaiian Luau. Every Hawaiian Luau is different but is based on the same traditions.

Good food is a must for a Luau. Typically you will see things like Kalua Pua (roasted pig), Haupia (a desert food), and Hawaiian sweet bread (among other traditional foods). Since a Luau is one of many traditional Oahu activities, it only makes sense that the food is prepared traditionally. 

Using an Imu (an underground oven) to cook some of the food is a fun touch for visitors to experience. Not to mention the entertainment. Hula dancing is a beautiful show to enjoy with all of that food.

Swimming with Dolphins

Who doesn’t love these incredibly fun and beautifully playful creatures? Dolphins are a part of the stunning marine life that calls Oahu home. Sharing their beauty and magnificence with visitors has been a long-time tradition for native Hawaii. 

That is why it is one of our most popular Oahu Tours.

Out of all of the Oahu excursions and activities available to you , don’t pass up the opportunity to snorkel with dolphins. Getting to see spinner dolphins playing with each other happily in their natural habitat is a completely unique experience. 

We will also most likely see some sea turtles swimming around. Depending on the time of year we might see some bottlenose or spotted dolphins. During the winter months, we could even see some humpback whales if we are lucky.

Snorkeling with Turtles on Oahu

Snorkeling is a magnificent experience if you have never done it before. If you have, then you know just how amazing it truly feels to swim with stunning sea creatures and to see them in their natural habitat. Even if you have been to an aquarium and have seen the tropical fish and marine mammals, there is no comparison to the mesmerizing experience of seeing them firsthand in the water. 

When snorkeling with sea turtles it is important to follow whatever rules that the guide gives you in order to keep these gentle giants safe and relaxed. Make sure to keep your distance, and never touch or feed one of the sea turtles. They are a federally protected species so we need to always remember to be mindful when in the water with them. Depending on the time of year or weather conditions our tours are subject to change to ensure you are provided with the best possible experience. Now we know that sharks aren’t for everyone, however, they are a vital part of our underwater ecosystem. Big Island Tour

Perfectly organised day, from communication prior to the day to everyone involved in sny part of the tour. The guide was great, hugely knowledgeable and interesting. The helicopter trip was perhaps the most incredible ... more thing I have ever done. The ground crew were superb and the pilot made it the best trip ever. After waiting 30 years to do this tour it didn't disappoint. Could not recommend it highly enough.

Good tour, but you can't schedule nature

The timings and organisation of the tour were good. We were picked up from the airport and taken to see the Volcano National Park sites with a good guide who kept us informed and was accommodating of our needs. Unfortuna ... more tely you can't schedule nature and we didn't see any volcanic activity apart from a little steam, but it was still interesting, especially the lava tube. We had a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters to finish off with, but I will not review that part, I will review their admin however. We really wanted a copy of the video of our flight as it was for a 50th birthday, but due to a technical difficulty could not get it at the time. We were told to just drop them a line, but after several emails and calls, still nothing - very disappointed in them.

Dexter was a great guide with tons of information about not only the specific tour items but also the island and people in general. Rainy morning made volcano viewing tough but that’s Mother Nature. The helo tour of volc ... more anos in the afternoon more than made up for things!

Oahu to Big Island in a day

Glad we did it but it's expensive and a very long day. Up at 3:45 to get a taxi to the airport for a 6:00am flight. The tour said lunch included, neither we nor anyone else on the tour thought it would be a packet of ch ... more ips and a turkey wrap in a box on board the bus. It was. The tour locations were excellent, the volcano, lava tube, waterfalls were all spectacular. The guide was good.

This was an awesome tour. It went like clockwork and our tour guide, Ernie, was very knowledgeable of the island and took good care of us. I would highly recommend this tour.

We loved our day exploring coffee farms, an active volcano, rainforest waterfalls and like everything about it. I had my head on a swivel, there was always something more to see!

We went down the road to Hana and then kept going. It was the best day we had on Maui. The stuff past Hana is absolutely awesome. The Best waterfalls, roadside cliff views, historic buildings and big open areas. It was cool.

The island has a lot of people but that means they have lots of great little places to eat at and check out. That is what we did all day long. New places, new tastes, new everything.  Each part of the island is different. Going all the way around allowed us to see it all.

One dead, 11 others injured after shuttle bus plows into group near Honolulu cruise port

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - One person is dead, and 11 others were injured Friday when a shuttle bus driver dropping off passengers near a Honolulu cruise ship terminal hit the gas instead of the brake, pinning several people against concrete barriers, first responders said.

Honolulu EMS said 68-year-old Dianna Cricelli from Pocahontas, Illinois, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and police traffic investigators confirmed she later died. There were four others who were seriously injured: Her husband Frank Cricelli, 66, a 67-year-old woman, a 55-year-old woman, and a 58-year-old man.

Diana’s husband, Frank, said, “The family is mourning the loss of Dianna. They are asking for privacy during this difficult time.”

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii said the four others who were seriously injured are also from Illinois and that they are being offered assistance.

Additionally, a man in his 70s was taken to the hospital in stable condition while six other adults, ranging in age from their 40s to their 70s, suffered minor injuries and declined transport.

Multiple EMS units with paramedics and EMTs responded to the scene at Pier 2 about 10:20 a.m.

Honolulu police said the incident happened in a private parking lot when a 57-year-old driver dropping people off and picking others up was notified that his vehicle was moving forward. He jumped into the driver’s seat to stop it, but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes.

Florida ER nurse Janet Lightfoot, on a cruise with her mom, jumped into action to help.

The two had just disembarked Friday morning and were waiting for a shuttle to go shopping when they saw a bus with a Hilo Hatties logo heading toward a crowd of people.

“Somebody screamed, and then I looked over and the bus hit into the crowd,” she said.

“It just kept going until it hit the wall there. Big cement block was pushed out and the bus hit into the wall. I ran over and kind of started triaging people and trying to help.”

Lightfoot said she’s accustomed to seeing traumatic injuries, but “this is just different.”

“We’re on vacation. The husband of one of the family members was there and just sad.”

Bystanders said the chaotic scene unfolded in seconds.

“It was shocking,” said witness Mike Frost.

Added Linda Reck, also visiting from Florida, “It just kept going and and my daughter yells out, ‘There’s nobody driving the bus.’ And then poof, it hits the wall.”

Honolulu police said it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol are factors in the crash.

Carnival Miracle issued the following statement about the incident:

Nine Carnival Miracle guests were hit by a shuttle bus in the transportation area outside the Honolulu cruise terminal on Friday morning, April 12. Sadly, one guest has died from her injuries. She was traveling with her husband, who was also injured and is expected to recover. Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests. Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones. Carnival Miracle is on a 15-day Carnival Journeys sailing that departed Long Beach, Calif. on April 6.

HONOLULU (AP) — Amy Chadwick spent years scrimping and saving as a single mother of two to buy a house in the town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui. But after a devastating fire leveled Lahaina in August and reduced Chadwick’s home to white dust, the cheapest rental she and her now-husband could find for their family and dogs cost $10,000 a month.

Chadwick, a fine-dining server, moved to Florida where she could stretch her homeowners insurance dollars. She’s worried Maui’s exorbitant rental prices, driven in part by vacation rentals that hog a limited housing supply, will hollow out her tight-knit town.

Most people in Lahaina work for hotels, restaurants and tour companies and can’t afford $5,000 to $10,000 a month in rent, she said.

“You’re pushing out an entire community of service industry people. So no one’s going to be able to support the tourism that you’re putting ahead of your community,” Chadwick said by phone from her new home in Satellite Beach on Florida’s Space Coast. “Nothing good is going to come of it unless they take a serious stance, putting their foot down and really regulating these short-term rentals.”

The Aug. 8 wildfire killed 101 people and destroyed housing for 6,200 families, amplifying Maui’s already acute housing shortage and laying bare the enormous presence of vacation rentals in Lahaina. It reminded lawmakers that short-term rentals are an issue across Hawaii, prompting them to consider bills that would give counties the authority to phase them out.

Gov. Josh Green got so frustrated he blurted out an expletive during a recent news conference.

“This fire uncovered a clear truth, which is we have too many short-term rentals owned by too many individuals on the mainland and it is b———t,” Green said. “And our people deserve housing, here.”

Vacation rentals are a popular alternative to hotels for those seeking kitchens, lower costs and opportunities to sample everyday island life. Supporters say they boost tourism, the state’s biggest employer. Critics revile them for inflating housing costs, upending neighborhoods and contributing to the forces pushing locals and Native Hawaiians to leave Hawaii for less expensive states.

This migration has become a major concern in Lahaina. The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, a nonprofit, estimates at least 1,500 households — or a quarter of those who lost their homes — have left since the August wildfire.

The blaze burned single family homes and apartments in and around downtown, which is the core of Lahaina’s residential housing. An analysis by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization found a relatively low 7.5% of units there were vacation rentals as of February 2023.

Lahaina neighborhoods spared by the fire have a much higher ratio of vacation rentals: About half the housing in Napili, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) north of the burn zone, is short-term rentals.

Napili is where Chadwick thought she found a place to buy when she first went house hunting in 2016. But a Canadian woman secured it with a cash offer and turned it into a vacation rental.

Also outside the burn zone are dozens of short-term rental condominium buildings erected decades ago on land zoned for apartments.

In 1992, Maui County explicitly allowed owners in these buildings to rent units for less than 180 days at a time even without short-term rental permits. Since November, activists have occupied the beach in front of Lahaina’s biggest hotels to push the mayor or governor to use their emergency powers to revoke this exemption.

Money is a powerful incentive for owners to rent to travelers: a 2016 report prepared for the state found a Honolulu vacation rental generates 3.5 times the revenue of a long-term rental.

State Rep. Luke Evslin, the Housing Committee chair, said Maui and Kauai counties have suffered net losses of residential housing in recent years thanks to a paucity of new construction and the conversion of so many homes to short-term rentals.

“Every alarm bell we have should be ringing when we’re literally going backwards in our goal to provide more housing in Hawaii,” he said.

In his own Kauai district, Evslin sees people leaving, becoming homeless or working three jobs to stay afloat.

The Democrat was one of 47 House members who co-sponsored one version of legislation that would allow short-term rentals to be phased out. One objective is to give counties more power after a U.S. judge ruled in 2022 that Honolulu violated state law when it attempted to prohibit rentals for less than 90 days. Evslin said that decision left Hawaii’s counties with limited tools, such as property taxes, to control vacation rentals.

Lawmakers also considered trying to boost Hawaii’s housing supply by forcing counties to allow more houses to be built on individual lots. But they watered down the measure after local officials said they were already exploring the idea.

Short-term rental owners said a phase-out would violate their property rights and take their property without compensation, potentially pushing them into foreclosure. Some predicted legal challenges.

Alicia Humiston, president of the Rentals by Owner Awareness Association, said some areas in West Maui were designed for travelers and therefore lack schools and other infrastructure families need.

“This area in West Maui that is sort of like this resort apartment zone — that’s all north of Lahaina — it was never built to be local living,” Humiston said.

One housing advocate argues that just because a community allowed vacation rentals decades ago doesn’t mean it still needs to now.

“We are not living in the 1990s or in the 1970s,” said Sterling Higa, executive director of Housing Hawaii’s Future. Counties “should have the authority to look at existing laws and reform them as necessary to provide for the public good.”

Courtney Lazo, a real estate agent who is part of Lahaina Strong, the group occupying Kaanapali Beach, said tourists can stay in her hometown now but many locals can’t.

“How do you expect a community to recover and heal and move forward when the people who make Lahaina, Lahaina, aren’t even there anymore?” she said at a recent news conference as her voice quivered. “They’re moving away.”

Corrections Commission ‘Taken Aback’ By Use Of Restraint Chairs In Kauai Jail

The Kauai jail and two other facilities in Hawaii have the chairs, which require high levels of force to immobilize inmates and can be dangerous if not used properly.

The state Correctional System Oversight Commission wants Hawaii jail and prison officials to suspend the use of potentially dangerous inmate restraint chairs after commission members discovered one in the Kauai jail.

Restraint chairs “have caused serious harm to people in custody, resulted in death, and have been subjected to lawsuits in many states. It is an area ripe for misuse and litigation,” according to a new commission report on the Kauai Community Correctional Center.

The commission also flagged an assortment of other problems at the aging Kauai jail, including a kitchen floor that has collapsed in places and jail staffers who appear to be exhausted from working 16- and 24-hour shifts.

Members of the commission were “quite taken aback” when they found the chairs designed to restrain prisoners during an inspection of riot control gear in a storage area of KCCC on March 21, according to the report. The commission also identified a “WRAP” restraint device in the same storage area.

Martha Torney, a commissioner and former deputy director of the Department of Public Safety, said in an interview she has never before heard of restraint chairs being used in Hawaii prisons or jails.

They are a concern because they involve use of high levels of force, with the inmates forcibly strapped into the chairs to immobilize them, she said. Staffers at the jail told commission members the chairs are used “as needed.”

Tommy Johnson, director of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said use of the chairs is governed by departmentwide policies and procedures for restraint and seclusion. He said the chairs can only be used under the supervision of a mental health professional, and staff are trained to use them.

Johnson said only Halawa Correctional Facility, the Women’s Community Correctional Center and KCCC have restraint chairs, but said Halawa and WCCC have never used them. The WRAP restraint device at KCCC has never been used, according to the department.

The policy on use of restraint and seclusion does not specifically mention the chairs, but covers “the whole gamut” of restraint equipment such as handcuffs and leg irons, Johnson said. The policy does specifically indicate it applies to other restraint equipment such as lockable helmets and spit hoods.

According to the restraint policy, inmates cannot be placed in restraints for more than two hours without a review, and prisoners in restraints must be constantly supervised visually, he said. Wellness checks are required every 15 minutes, and “range-of-motion” releases allowing prisoners to stretch are required every two hours.

But Christin Johnson, oversight coordinator for the commission, said KCCC staff were unable to describe any formal policies or procedures for safely using the chairs.

“Even if a policy does exist somewhere, I’m telling you right now that based on what I’m hearing from staff, it’s not known about, it’s not utilized and therefore it’s highly unlikely that it’s being followed,” she said.

Placing an agitated prisoner into one of the chairs may also involve a high degree of force and can be quite dangerous, Christin Johnson said. “It’s not something to mess with.”

The chairs are apparently used to restrain people who are in a mental health crisis and may be engaging in self-harm, such as banging their heads on cell doors, she said. But there were no log books or records commissioners could review to track how often the chairs were used, or for how long.

Christin Johnson worked at New York City’s Rikers Island complex of jails, which also had restraint chairs. But staff at those facilities are required to videotape each use of the chairs, keep records and notify jail oversight staff whenever the chairs were used, she said.

“It’s extremely important to be very knowledgable and aware of how to use these, when to use these, who to have involved in the usage, how often to check on people when they’re in these restraint mechanisms,” she said. “There’s just a lot that can go wrong if people are not familiar or aware.”

Apart from any potential harm to prisoners, use of the chairs could present legal risks for the state because use of restraint chairs has triggered lawsuits across the country.

Tommy Johnson said KCCC Warden Jerry Jona and the jail chief of security were unable to join the commission members on the tour, and “they would be the ones who know about the policy.” Health care staff who order the use of restraints notify the watch commander, who would oversee their use, he said.

When asked if he would suspend use of the chairs, Tommy Johnson said he would take the recommendation under advisement, and send the restraint and seclusion policy to the state Attorney General’s Office for review. But he said he believes the policy was already reviewed by the AG’s office when it was drafted.

The correctional system “will continue to use the chairs as needed, but I want to make it clear that we haven’t used the chairs in a while,” he said.

The commission report also remarked that “staff burnout was extremely evident during the tour,” with corrections officers sometimes required to work double and triple shifts.

“Pure exhaustion has been more evident in KCCC than in any other facility,” according to the report. “The Commission believes that KCCC staff are doing the best they can, but they have been forced to work in these same conditions for far too long, and relief is needed as soon as possible.”

Tommy Johnson said the department is stepping up recruitment and running more training classes for corrections officers in an effort to improve staffing, with six classes scheduled for this year. The department has also increased its emergency hiring under 89-day contracts to temporarily fill vacancies.

He estimated the department is short 30% of its authorized correctional officers because of vacancies, workers’ compensation injuries, military leave and other reasons. KCCC has 61 authorized corrections officer positions, and the department’s 2023 annual report shows KCCC had 18 vacancies.

The commission also questioned a decision by KCCC management to withhold wages that are supposed to be paid to inmates on work lines at the facility.

It’s state policy to pay 25 cents per hour for their jobs, but the warden told commissioners “the facility believes it is more rehabilitative not to pay people in custody such low wages,” according to the report. “The facility sees 25 cents an hour pay as disrespectful.”

Tommy Johnson responded to that finding by instructing his deputy director for corrections to “immediately ensure inmates participating on facility work lines receive the appropriate hourly compensation,” the department said in a written statement.

The new KCCC report also cites run-down facilities at the jail, parts of which are subject to flooding during heavy rains.

The kitchen floor of the Kauai jail needs immediate attention because it has collapsed in places, with plywood or mats used to cover missing floorboards. The report noted the commission raised the same concerns during a tour a year ago.

Tommy Johnson said a contract for nearly $4.47 million has been awarded to fix that problem. State procurement records show that the contract involves replacing the existing kitchen with a prefabricated unit, and work on that project was scheduled to begin Jan. 1.

During the commission’s visit KCCC also had two or three cells adjoining the jail administration area that were not being used because of flooding, he said.

The department is seeking another $4.5 million to $5 million to hire a consultant to help select a site for a new Kauai jail to move the facility to higher ground to deal with the flooding problem, Johnson said.
