Africa offers a wide range of accommodation options of various styles, so to some degree an itinerary can be crafted to fit your budget whatever it may be - although of course the bigger your budget the more options you will have. The most expensive element of an African honeymoon is the safari part; a night on safari is much more expensive than a night at a beach. The lowest cost for safari accommodation is roughly $400 per person per night, whereas your beach time can begin from $180 per person per night. It is worth noting that your safari is so expensive because included in this is guide, vehicle, camping and conservation fees as well as the lovely intimate safari experience you get in these little lodges which burst with character. Itinerary planning is all a matter of balancing your time and budget between safari and the beach in the way that works best for you, which we can guide you through and help you with. We recommend at least three nights on safari, as we feel that any less is too little to really ‘get’ the experience. Four to six nights on safari is absolutely perfect in our opinion – much longer than this will be astronomically expensive and you’ll probably get “safari-ed out!”. The good news is that we have long-standing, excellent relationships with all our suppliers, so our clients often get special treatment and little extras (the best room in the lodge, a private dinner in the savannah, a surprise bush breakfast, rose petal filled baths…) which means you get the best possible value for your money. Introducing Odyssey Explorer Welcome to our new itinerary-building app! Odyssey Explorer allows you to browse a range of popular itinerary templates and tailor them to suit your budget and tastes. Once you are happy with your route template, Odyssey Explorer gives you the freedom to select and change your accommodation in each destination. It is an excellent tool for you to get an instant price for your dream trip before you work with a Tanzania expert to fine-tune it and make it into a reality.

When is the best time for an African honeymoon?

Africa is enormous and each country’s climate depends on its own certain factors including latitude, altitude, distance from the sea etc. The very best time to safari depends on each particular area, and also depends on what you are after form your experience. For further information please see our individual country pages. In general terms, East Africa has an equatorial climate, with little seasonal temperature variation across the year, and it is dry in our summer which is confusingly their winter. Similarly, Southern Africa has the best wildlife and is driest in these months – Southern Africa has a more extreme climate though, and safari is closed throughout their summer (rainy season) from January through until late March. Most honeymooners coming from un-tropical climates (such as the UK!) like to honeymoon in Africa within this period from July – October to make the most of the African sun! However, there are always exceptions to the rule! We can guarantee that at any month you are looking to honeymoon there will be an exceptional place to go. For example, although January, February and March are wet and rainy for southern Africa safari, this is one of the very best times to see the Great Wildebeest Migration calving in the Southern Serengeti in Tanzania. Equally, November is the best time to go and see the Liuwa plains come to life in Zambia, and Cape Town is wonderful and sunny and dry in January through until May! It is best to call up with your dates and preferences and we can guide you to the very best destination for you.

African Honeymoon Planning – Africa Odyssey Tips

When planning your itinerary don’t try to fit too much in, or you will get exhausted and won’t enjoy yourselves. Give yourself plenty of time to relax! Safaris are tiring with early stars and action packed days, I tis important to make room for downtime in your itinerary. Consider travelling in the off-season – you will pay less and will still get an incredible safari experience. Don’t head off on safari immediately after the wedding, give yourselves a little time to decompress first so you can make the most of the experience once you get there. Consider adding optional extras (such as a private vehicle while on safari, a night fly camping in the bush, or bungee jumping at Vic Falls…) for some very special memories. We have some excellent honeymoon special offers, including 50% off for the bride at some lodges – ask us for further information!

For adventurous couples, there’s nothing quite like a safari honeymoon. After all, it doesn’t get more once-in-a-lifetime than spending your days looking for leopards and watching elephants drink from your lodge pool. But there’s plenty of romance and relaxation to be found on a safari too. Take it from someone who recently went on a safari honeymoon and was enchanted not just by the epic wildlife, but also by the romantic private plunge pools, candlelit bush dinners, and spa treatments for two. Whether you’re hoping to spot the Big Five, horseback ride across desert dunes, or enjoy some R&R together on your private deck with a rainforest view, there’s a safari lodge just right for all your honeymoon needs.

Final Verdict

Methodology, best overall : singita lebombo.

Perched above the N’wanetsi River on a private concession within Kruger National Park, Singita Lebombo is a world-class stay in terms of animal sightings, accommodations, and service.

Air-conditioned rooms, large private terraces, soaking tubs, indoor/outdoor showers, pool, spa, large wine cellar, on-site boutique and gallery

All-suite accommodations

Kitchen will cook you anything

Exceptional safari guides and staff

Personalized and customizable experiences

Great location to see the Big Five game animals

Singita Lebombo is an unforgettable South African spoil. Featuring 13 stunningly designed suites perched like nests above the N’wanetsi River, the lodge offers guests the best of indoor-outdoor living. Each suite is a true room (rather than a tent), with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a sumptuous king-sized bed, a sizable living area, and a bathroom complete with getting ready stations, an indoor/outdoor shower, and a deep soaking tub. Just slide open the glass doors to enjoy some fresh air on your large private terrace. Lounge on the outdoor daybed after lunch to spot elephants drinking in the river just below, or ask the staff to add cozy bedding and a net to the bed if you prefer sleeping out under the stars and waking up to the sound of lion calls.

Of course, on safari, it’s really all about the game drives, and Singita over-delivers on that front too. Located on a 33,000-acre private concession within Kruger National Park, the animal sighting opportunities are next level. From coy leopards to hippos and regal lions, it’s likely you’ll see the Big Five and then some. Even at the lodge, it’s not uncommon to see monkeys running by the outdoor dining area or to spot a herd of elephants taking a bath in the river below your balcony. The guides are also exceptionally knowledgeable, tracking down shy animals on the twice-a-day game drives and answering questions about everything from the native plants to animal behaviors with ease.

In fact, when it comes to service in general, Singita’s is practically unbeatable. It’s the type of place where everyone on staff will know your name and your go-to cocktail order by the first afternoon. There are no set mealtimes and the kitchen will cook up truly anything you want at any time. Every last detail is curated here, from touches like having sunscreen, bug spray, and several sun hats stocked in the rooms, to lighting candles and leaving your favorite tea out at night. The staff is also more than happy to dream up personalized experiences for special occasions so honeymooners can enjoy custom activities ranging from a private dinner in the bush to a private wine tasting with the on-site sommelier.

While it’s certainly worth the price for those looking for a bucket list trip and the lodge to match, keep in mind that Singita Lebombo is very pricey, especially during peak season, from June to August. Also, be aware that because it’s on a private concession within Kruger National Park, the fastest way to get there is via a short private charter flight from Johannesburg.

Best Luxury : Royal Malewane

Courtesy of Royal Malewane

You won’t regret splashing out on a stay at Royal Malewane, where luxurious yet intimate suites with private plunge pools offer plenty of romance between game drives spotting the Big Five.

Air-conditioned rooms, private decks, private plunge pools, pool, spa, in-room fireplaces

Smaller, more intimate lodge

Modern comforts like Wi-Fi, TVs, and air conditioning

Kosher kitchen with an excellent selection of South African wines

Fewer rooms means you need to book well in advance

With just six luxury suites (plus three multi-bedroom villas), Royal Malewane is an intimate safari lodge that lends itself particularly well to privacy and romance. Tastefully styled with a nod to old-world charms, suites include divine four-poster beds, Persian rugs, clawfoot soaking tubs, and fireplaces that staff will light for you at night, along with an array of candles for a romantic ambiance. Best of all, each suite also features a private outdoor deck complete with plunge pool—the perfect spot to cheers to your new life as newlyweds.

Set on the Thornybush Private Game Reserve within Kruger National Park, well-trained and highly knowledgeable guides make unforgettable daily game drives for couples to spot giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, rhinos, and more. Truly lucky guests might even have elephants wandering right up to their plunge pools.

The staff are everything you’d expect at an award-winning luxury lodge, and a private butler is included with your stay to cater to your every whim. The kitchen is also highly accommodating. Not only can menus be tailored to your tastes, but the in-house sommelier will also recommend pairings of local South Africa wines to suit your choices (or, pick your poison from the whiskey bar instead). Plus, there’s even a kosher-compliant kitchen on-site. But for a truly memorable honeymoon dinner, opt for a candlelit experience in the Bush Tent to dine al fresco under the starry night sky.

Also not to be missed is getting a treatment at the Royal Waters Spa. The extensive spa menu includes treatments ranging from African fusion massages to collagen recovery facials, and even gel manicures. In addition to the treatment rooms, the wellness area also includes a heated lap pool, gym, steam room, hot and cold baths, and four shaded casitas for the ultimate tranquil setting to get some R&R between game drives.

Best Budget : Natural Selection Little Sable

natural selection little sable botswana

Affordable still means bucket list-worthy at Little Sable, where eight cozy tents starting from under $600 per night make the ultimate basecamp for exploring Botswana’s Okavango Delta.

Pool, lounge, bar, complimentary laundry service

Affordable rates

Private viewing decks

Mokoro (canoe) excursions

En suite bathrooms

Tents are small

For those on a budget, an all-inclusive lodge with luxe trappings set on a private reserve of over 490,000 acres and starting from under $600 per night is just the ticket. Set along the Okavango Delta, the landscapes in this part of Botswana are more tree-filled than areas like Kruger National Park, but safari goers are still likely to spot jaw-dropping wildlife like elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, emus, and hippos. But thanks to the river location, the unique value add here is seeing animals from the water. Beyond just traditional vehicle game drives (where the cars have snorkel-esque features so they can drive through deep water), you can also go out on mokoro (traditional canoe) safaris for a stunning new perspective.

Tents at Little Sable are small but well appointed. Each features a king-size bed (or two twins), a comfy leather chair, a writing desk, a ceiling fan, an en suite bathroom complete with your choice of an indoor or outdoor shower, and a small private viewing deck off the front. While tents feature electricity and full plumbing, be aware that there’s no Wi-Fi at this lodge, though that can be a plus for those looking to truly disconnect.

The lodge offers three set meal times per day, including a breakfast buffet before early morning game drives, and typically a couple of choices for your main course for lunch and dinner. There’s also a communal lounge area and fire pit, where you can mingle with other guests or look for zebras and elephants grazing in the grasslands. During downtime between game drives, cool off at the lodge pool after grabbing a G&T from the friendly bartender.

Best View : andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Soak up sweeping caldera views from lavish accommodations at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge before heading off on game drives on the crater floor and engaging in unique cultural experiences.

Butlers, private viewing decks, in-room fireplaces, in-room massages, large wine cellar, safari shop, complimentary laundry service

Opulent rooms

Maasai and Hadzabe tribe experiences

Gorgeous setting with diverse wildlife

Numerous unique activities beyond game drives available

Crater and concession fees not included in price

Food isn’t as wow-worthy as other lodges at similar price points

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge bills itself as “the game lodge at the top of the world,” and for good reason. Lush sweeping views are just one of the many selling points of this Tanzania showstopper that’s perched atop the largest intact caldera in the world. Soak it all in with a sundowner cocktail on the viewing deck while listening to the sunset chant of the Maasai warriors or with a romantic banquet dinner on the crater floor.

Within the caldera rim, you’ll find a rich haven teeming with diverse landscapes and wildlife, including endangered black rhinos, elephants, lions, flamingos, and more. In addition to game drives, guests can also engage with the stunning surroundings and deep culture of the area on hikes, spend the day with lion conservationists, visit a traditional Maasai boma (homestead), or even take beading lessons.

The lodge comprises three intimate-but-interconnected camps, each with its own dining area and viewing deck. All camps feature all-suite rooms that are positively lavish, with silk trappings, crystal chandeliers, deep soaking tubs, and wingback chairs around the in-room fireplaces. Thoughtful touches like banana leaf-thatched roofs and local artwork accents keep you firmly rooted in the location. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows allow you to enjoy the iconic crater views right from bed or with a morning cuppa on your private viewing deck. Personal butlers ensure your every need is met, from drawing bubble baths to arranging romantic private experiences.

Best Remote : Zannier Sonop

Courtesy of Sonop, Zannier Hotels

If horseback riding and fat-tire biking across otherworldly red dunes sound more up your alley than spotting big cats, there’s no better stay than Zannier Sonop to immerse yourself in Namibia’s remote desertscapes.

Outdoor infinity pool, spa, air-conditioned amenities, private decks, open-air cinema, cocktail and cigar lounge

Remote location in a gorgeous desert setting

White-glove, five-course dinners

Unique adventure experiences like hot air balloon and helicopter tours

Requires a long drive or expensive charter flight

Fewer animal viewing opportunities

Well off the beaten path, Zannier Sonop is a seven-hour drive from the closest main airport (though there is a private airstrip if you’re willing to pay for a charter transfer). But the long journey is more than worth it for the ethereal desert setting. In the heart of 13,800 acres of private nature reserve, the remote lodge includes just 10 billowing canvas tents among jutting boulders.

Each 1920s-inspired tent includes a four-poster bed, cozy armchairs, a writing desk, a vintage chest of drawers, and whimsical touches like a classic telescope and globe. The roll-up canvas allows you to enjoy panoramic views at any time from your room, including from the soaking tub or rain shower in the en suite bathroom.

Start your days with sunrise yoga, get some sun lounging on a chaise by the pool, and enjoy elegant communal dinners, where you can swap stories about your day with the other guests over a delectable five-course meal. Not to be missed is the nightly outdoor cinema experience, where you can curl up and watch a classic film under the night sky with a cocktail in hand. For a bit more outdoorsy adventure, Zannier Sonop offers a variety of additional experiences away from the lodge, including exploring the desert with guides by electric fat-tire bike or on horseback, and 4x4 adventures to the towering dunes of Sossusvlei.

Best for Privacy : Lion Sands Ivory Lodge

Between game drives spotting the Big Five in Sabi Sands, Lion Sands Ivory Lodge offers secluded and ultra-luxurious digs along the riverbank, with the option to spend an evening fully immersed in nature while sleeping in a kitted-out treehouse.

Spa, in-room fireplaces, private viewing decks, private plunge pools

Secluded, all-suite villas

Outdoor treehouse sleeping experience

Great location to spot the Big Five

Kosher kitchen

Can be very hot during summer months

Nestled on the river bank on a private concession within South Africa’s other world-renowned game reserve, Sabi Sands, Lion Sands Ivory Lodge is another supreme choice for travelers hoping to see the Big Five on daily game drives with well-trained guides.

Lion Sands offers travelers a choice of four lodges, but Ivory Lodge is the idyllic choice for honeymooners looking for ultimate privacy. With just eight one-bedroom villas, Ivory Lodge rooms feel highly secluded, with at least 70 feet between them. Villas offer spacious bedrooms and living areas with fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling glass so that you can see animals right from your sofa. Step outside to your sweeping private viewing deck and take a dip in the private heated plunge pool before settling into your sumptuous quarters. Rooms are decorated with modern black and ivory accents, with marble bathroom countertops, deep soaking tubs in the middle of the en suite bathrooms, and walled-in outdoor showers.

For a truly romantic experience, spend a night surrounded by nature at the Kingston Treehouse, a private outdoor sleeping area outfitted with a cozy feather bed situated on an elevated platform. Lit only by candlelight under the moonlight, enjoy a picnic dinner, fall asleep with a gentle breeze, and wake up to distant animal calls and a fiery sunrise.

The food options are also endless, including bush breakfasts, traditional-style dining in an African boma , and lantern-lit riverbed dinners. The kitchen is also happy to accommodate special requests or dietary restrictions and has kosher options available.

Best for Gorilla Trekking : Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

clouds mountain gorilla lodge

If glimpsing endangered mountain gorillas is at the top of your must-do list, there’s no better base than the cottages at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, set right at the entrance of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Personal butlers, spa, in-room fireplaces, private decks, complimentary laundry service, Wi-Fi

Spacious cottages

Prime location for seeing mountain gorillas

Gorgeous views

Gorilla trekking requires special permits

Hiking requires some fitness level

Built from volcanic stone, 10 spacious cottages at the edge of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest set the tone for romance and adventure. Bedrooms feature soaring ceilings, comfy king beds, big picture windows, and artwork by a local Ugandan artist. Meanwhile, separate living areas are decked out in cream-colored couches and armchairs positioned around cozy wood-burning stoves. Munch on snacks on your private deck brought to you daily by your personal butler while enjoying views that extend all the way to Virunga Volcanoes on clear days.

Of course, the real star of the show here is access to the mountain gorillas, which you can track on foot daily with experienced guides. Nearly half the world’s mountain gorilla population is housed in this forest, so it’s the prime place to catch sightings of gorgeous silverbacks as you hike through the spectacular rainforest setting.

Other activities available include waterfall hikes and cultural visits with the Batwa tribe for a respectful learning opportunity about their traditional way of life. Between outings, indulge in a massage and dine on delicious food made with fresh, local ingredients.

For adventurous couples seeking a one-of-a-kind experience, a safari honeymoon is tough to beat. Our top choice for the best safari lodge is Singita Lebombo, though you can’t go wrong splashing out at Royal Malewane for another option in Kruger National Park. Those on a budget will still find comfy accommodations and exceptional animal sightings at Little Sable in Botswana, while honeymooners hoping to track gorillas should opt for Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Uganda. If remote desert adventures in unique landscapes feel more up your alley than daily game drives, consider a stay at Zannier Sonop in Namibia.

To find the best safari lodges for honeymoons, we researched dozens of properties across Africa and visited some on this list firsthand. Every property on this list is all-inclusive and has an exceptional staff and knowledgeable guides for daily game drives and other adventures. Nearly every lodge is also located on a private concession or reserve, so you won’t have to fight any crowds for prime animal viewing opportunities. We also kept a special eye out for luxurious and comfortable accommodations in remote and wild settings, as well as notable amenities and romantic offerings. Additionally, every lodge on this list has an excellent five-star rating and stellar reviews from other guests on independent review sites like Tripadvisor.

What to Know Before Planning a Safari Honeymoon, According to a Travel Expert

I've helped couples plan romantic Africa vacations for 21 years. Here's what I recommend.

demerzel21/Getty Images

For newlyweds who want to combine adventure and romance on their honeymoon, there’s no better place than Africa. Trust me: I lived and worked in Africa as a camp manager and safari guide. I took my own honeymoon in Africa. And for the past 21 years, I’ve been helping couples plan their honeymoon safaris and anniversary celebrations headquarters.

An African honeymoon is, by its very nature, adventurous. Travelers can get up close and personal with lions, elephant, and several other species on game drives and walking safaris. Newlyweds on safari can visit traditional communities like the Maasai or Batwa to see how they live, or visit cities like Nairobi and Cape Town. Want to ramp up the adventure quotient? Take a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti or bungee jump off the Victoria Falls bridge.

But that doesn't mean romance has to take a back seat. At some safari camps, newlyweds can enjoy couples’ massages, romantic outdoor baths, and private candlelit bush dinners. Returning at night, they might find a special turn down service including champagne and chocolates before cozying up under a warm duvet in their tent beneath the star-studded African night sky, hearing hyenas whoop or lions roar. In the morning, bird calls announce the start of another day.

nicolamargaret/Getty Images

And if rest and relaxation (and romance) at the beach sound attractive, there are no shortage of “bush and beach” options to stay post-safari, from locally owned beach hotels to world-class resorts like the Four Seasons. Destinations such as Zanzibar, the Seychelles, and Mozambique boast beautiful white-sand beaches, warm turquoise water, and a range of activities—from sunbathing by the pool to swimming in the ocean to snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing.

To ensure a honeymoon safari is everything you hope for, keep these tips in mind.

Location, Location, Location

East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda) is best for: seeing huge herds of animals; trekking for gorillas, chimpanzees, and other primates; experiencing traditional cultures; and beautiful beaches. Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi, and Mozambique) is best for: up-close-and-personal wildlife experiences; private reserves; and non-safari activities like golf, wine tasting, and luxury train trips.

Think Strategically about the Time of Year

The best months for game viewing in most safari parks is in the winter season (June through October): the weather is typically cooler, sunny, and dry. In East Africa, the months of December to March can also be great for seeing lots of wildlife, while November, April, and May are the rainier months, (consider avoiding those unless lower prices and fewer crowds are a priority). In southern Africa, November to May is considered the "green" or shoulder season, with warmer temperatures and some precipitation. One exception here is Cape Town, which has warm weather (and is an extremely popular destination) from December to March.

Pace Yourself

Many honeymooners think they’ll only go to Africa once and want to “see it all” in a two-week trip—but actually, for many people that first visit to Africa only inspires return trips. We recommend picking one or two countries or regions and moving at a more relaxed pace, so all the experiences can be enjoyed without feeling rushed. The continent is huge and transportation between destinations can be long and arduous.

The Right Camp is Everything

Whether it’s five-star luxury treatment or a no-frills adventure camping, Africa has a wide range of hotels, tented camps, and lodges that are perfect for honeymooners. Imagine spending the night in Elewana Loisaba 's star beds, a treehouse platform where four-poster beds sit under open skies or under thatched cover.  Or, after seeing the mighty Victoria Falls, newlyweds can stay at the Victoria Falls River Lodge 's Island Treehouse Suites, located on a private island with plunge pools on the deck and hippos just below. Water lovers love spending a night in The Manta Resort ’s underwater room, just off Pemba Island, Tanzania. The choices go on and on.

Remember — Now's the Time to Celebrate

There are many creative options for couples wanting to do something extra special on their honeymoon safari. For example, in Kenya you could participate in a Maasai wedding ceremony, which involves a warrior escort (spears in hand), a chief or elder to officiate, and a traditional goat roast celebration. Want to take a couples’ bubble bath overlooking the savannah, have a private wine tasting, try a cooking lesson, or feed giraffes through your breakfast window? The opportunities are endless.

By keeping these tips and ideas in mind, you’re sure to have an adventurous and romantic honeymoon safari. Better yet, let an expert do the work and tackle the many details—we can help you plan your dream trip.

How to Plan a Safari Honeymoon in 2023

There are so many baby giraffes in your future.

safari in serengeti national park

Long before I met my husband, I resisted the idea that a honeymoon should be the most incredible trip of one's life. Far too much pressure! I didn’t want to save a location or an adventure for a trip I wasn’t sure I’d ever be lucky enough to have. The fact that our own honeymoon would take place in 2021 knocked expectations down a peg further—we’d hoped to go to Japan, but the country remained closed to tourists. While researching vacations that felt, at a minimum, really special, we were finally swayed by imagery of couples outfitted in khaki wielding binoculars, a pride of lions in the foreground. Let’s go on safari!

Following the horrors and panic of 2020, an African safari was a surprisingly safe bet: It’s an outdoor activity sans crowds. I expected to buy a bunch of linen clothes and see some cute animals. What I couldn’t have anticipated was how much I’d absolutely love it. Within days of arrival in Kenya, we were observing lion prints in the dirt and translating their calls, naming varieties of bird, sensing by the awkward turn of a giraffe’s neck that a cheetah was approaching, and waking up at 4:45 a.m. in excitement.

Despite our intentions, we’d gone ahead and experienced the vacation of a lifetime. I wept daily from sheer wonder. But plotting the trip was a bit more complicated, and came with more questions, than a throw-a-bikini-in-a-weekender-and-go Caribbean stint. Here’s my best advice for those interested in hitting the savannah, as well as guidance from safari and African travel experts.

safari zebras

Where to go

Indeed, South Africa allows visitors to pack in cosmopolitan evenings and urgent history alongside enthralling nature. “You can be in Cape Town—enjoy beach, enjoy cityscape, enjoy the wine country—and still be able to do safari while you are in that one province,” says Jerry Mpufane, the president of South African Tourism , North America. Maybe honeymooners also like to combine a safari trip with some days vegging on the beach. “There are beach options that you can tag onto to an East Africa circuit,” says Liz Loftus, a private travel designer and sales manager at the safari travel company Alluring Africa . “It is possible to combine with the Seychelles or the Kenyan coast or Zanzibar.”

giraffe safari

For my own trip, I really wanted to combine two countries to max out the time, and considered South Africa + Botswana or Kenya + Tanzania/Zanzibar. Ultimately, Covid-19 made it a poor time to hop borders, given testing requirements, but many of those restrictions have since changed. Instead, we hit up four stops within Kenya: two safari lodges with wildly different terrains (Chyulu Hills and the Maasai Mara), a beach, and time in the capital city.

When to go, and for how long

Given the American approach to vacation allotment, and that you may have just taken time off around your wedding, it can be difficult to request a significant number of days off for a honeymoon. But you already know you’ll regret it if you don’t.

Considering that even direct flights from the U.S. will take up a day on either end, “it's definitely an eight-day minimum, but I would much prefer to be looking at two and even three weeks,” says Charlotte French, a travel consultant and founder of Cavatica Luxury Travel . We stayed for two weeks, moving between regions about every three nights. “Usually we'll say a minimum of three nights in each safari destination, so that you can get a chance to tuck in and experience where you are. Two nights is pretty fast,” says Loftus. “There are a couple places in East Africa where two nights is acceptable, like the Ngorongoro Crater. But if you're in the Serengeti, maybe four, because it's vast and you've got more area to cover.”

And if relaxation is truly the name of the game, you could easily spend longer in a single lodge. I’d read a warning from a travel influencer that safari gets boring after three days, and now think that person lacks curiosity; I could have spent ten zen days following a single cheetah family on their hunts and been totally thrilled.

cheetahs, safari

As for the seasonality, the experts say there’s really not a bad time to go. A big pull is the Great Migration in east Africa, the annual pilgrimage of herds of wildebeest, zebra, antelope and more as they search for food and water—and try to avoid the lions, leopards, and cheetahs that attack them like fish in a barrel. It takes place from May to December, though, so there’s loads of time to take it in.

Additionally, winter (the months of May through August) can be great in southern Africa because, “You’ve got less green and less leaves on the trees. It’s actually the best time to view all kinds of animals because you literally see more,” says Mpufane. And anyway, “We actually never experience a winter by Northern Hemisphere standards,” he continues, since temperatures are fairly warm year-round. Animals won’t need to hide from the blazing sun of mid-day, as they do in the warmer months (September through April), though spring might bring an abundance of baby animals.

It truly goes back to determining what you want to see. But alright, if there’s really a week to avoid? “The one time that's honestly the worst, only because of availability, is actually over the Christmas/New Year holidays,” says French. Rates go up, and lodges are booked years in advance.

safari elephant

What it will cost

There’s no way around it: A safari is a luxurious vacation experience, and the international flights and typically all-inclusive lodges are not cheap. But there’s certainly a range of the latter. “I would say luxury starts at around the $750 range per person per night and goes up from there,” says Khabo. Some destinations and their activities cost more than others, such as Rwanda’s typically $1,500 gorilla trekking permit for international tourists, or Botswana as a whole. “Botswana is definitely going to be your premium cost,” says French, “starting at $1,250 per person per day.” And that’s before international airfare, though with a bit of luck and hunting it is possible to occasionally find a sub $1,000 flight.

mara nyika camp

A tour operator or travel agent who specializes in safari travel can help bring costs down or help you determine where to spend and save if presented with an overall budget. “There are way to maximize the value for the dollar that you're spending, whether that's utilizing shoulder season pricing or these honeymoon discounts or a long stay,” says Loftus. “Maybe it's ‘No, you're not going to get a 14-day trip, but we can do it in 10 and check off all of the things that are the most important to you.’” These experts will also know which lodges are looking to fill a room, which are recently renovated, which are housed within the same hospitality group and might offer a discount, and so on.

What to pack

In my pre-safari ignorance, I really thought that all the khaki and olive-colored clothes were kind of a shtick. A costume! But it turns out that no, folks generally wear the neutral colors of the surrounding savannah, in cotton or linen fabrics, for a few solid reasons: Bright colors can distract the animals, white gets dirty in the dust, and dark shades attract tsetse flies, not to mention the hot equatorial sun. Worry not, though—you don’t need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for the experience. A tour operator, travel agent, or the lodge itself will likely have a suggested packing list, but I ultimately packed a total of three safari outfits (combos of t-shirts, linen buttondowns, and linen joggers or leggings) that I mixed and matched.

“Pack less and not more, and remember that certainly, [at] any luxury lodge, they're going to do laundry, same day or overnight,” says French. Indeed, we were able to wash our clothes at each stop. Khabo has another mantra: “Layers, layers, layers,” she says. “If you remember nothing else, remember layers.” Temperatures can drop to the 50s or lower at night and in the mornings, while reaching the 80s mid-day. My husband and I were fine in a fleece jacket or heavy sweatshirt, plus wide scarves and hats with wide brims.

what to pack on safari

Another thing to keep in mind is that lodges are often reached by tiny airplane, which often have weight limits around 20 kgs (or 44 lbs) for a passenger’s entire bag allowance, meaning main suitcase and carry-ons combined. And the main suitcase should actually be a soft-sided bag like a duffle, no wheels. “Almost all of the smaller planes you're going to fly on, they're going to require a soft-sided bag,” says French. “I can't tell you how many times I've been traveling and an American's turned up with great big, standard hard suitcase, and they can't get them in the plane.”

Among my most urgent packing tips? Bring ear plugs. On night two of our trip, while tossing and turning with jet lag, we were woken by a family of lions roaring playfully outside our room for hours. What at first was a spooky delight ultimately became a sleep ruiner.

What to know about Covid-19 precautions

While restrictions are gradually lifting around the world, a negative PCR test is still required to enter many African nations as of mid-2022, though rules vary by country and change often. Check the website of a country’s embassy or the U.S. State Department’s list of country-specific information to see what you need. Vaccination rates are lower than in the U.S., owing to lack of supply, but in my time in Kenya, masking and public signage around hand-washing and other precautions were more widely adopted than what I’ve experienced at home in New York City. Plus, our lodges had changed their mealtime procedures to distance guests, primarily outdoors, among many other safety measures.

Still, for all the obvious reasons of the last two years, purchasing travel insurance is a great idea, in the case you get sick before or during your trip and need to alter arrangements. And this is another case where a travel agent or operator can really help, whether it’s by keeping on top of the restrictions or arranging your PCR test to return to the U.S.

safari birds

How to get the most out of a trip

It took us a day or two of the safari experience to get a handle on how it worked: Generally, at our lodges, two game drives were offered per day, in the early morning and late afternoon, with a long break in the middle for lunch, naps, and general relaxation. We set the start times with our guides, which in our case meant gathering before sunrise because we were just so excited.

zebra jawbone

“From a purely logistical perspective, it's definitely [about] communicating what your preferences are, either before arrival or right upon arrival, and getting an understanding of what your options are,” says Khabo. “If it's not communicated, you may miss out on an opportunity.” If we wanted to try out the other possible activities—safaris on foot or bike or horseback, say, or glimpsing local art or shopping, or taking visit to the nearest village—we had to let the staff know so they could plan it for us.

Another aspect we didn’t realize right away was that we could simply ask our guides to find our favorite animals for us. “They can't guess what you're interested in. They really want to talk to you, and they're incredibly knowledgeable,” says French. “Don't get in a vehicle and not strike up a conversation. Those conversations with your guides are going to be the most memorable of the trip, too.”

baby cheetahs

We chatted for hours with our two guides: One told us about his upbringing within the Masaai while we sipped coffee under a banyan tree, and taught us about each tooth in the old jaw bone of a zebra we found in the dirt; the other took our challenge to spot the extremely elusive leopard seriously and finally delivered, with glee, under the pink sky of our final night, a mother and baby nuzzling in the tall grass.

Let us help you discover some well known and lesser discovered jewels for an unforgettable trip of a lifetime!

If you’re thinking about an African safari honeymoon, you might wonder, what’s the best safari honeymoon destination in Africa? What happens on a safari? How long do you need for a safari in Africa? Where should I go for a safari and beach honeymoon??

Let us help you choose with our spectacular safari honeymoon destinations in Africa.

1. Botswana

Botswana is an underrated gem and flies a little more under the radar than popular African safari honeymoon destinations on the list like Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa.

It’s a landlocked country in Southern Africa and bordered by Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Unspoiled by mass tourism, yet it’s very accessible, too. It’s one of the best destinations for a sustainable honeymoon .

The Chobe River / Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta are two of the extraordinary safari honeymoon destinations in Africa.

Travel through the vast, unspoiled wilderness and see the Big 5 (although sadly, the Rhino is less commonly seen because of poaching).

The Okavango Delta is a vast wetland wilderness that offers incredible opportunities for wildlife viewing.

The Delta is home to a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, hippos, wildebeest, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, antelope, rhinos, zebra and crocodiles. You can take a unique mokoro safari (a canoe safari), too.

Chobe National Park , in the northern part of the country, has the largest concentration of elephants in Africa. It’s a must for lovers of these majestic animals.

You’ll also find giraffe, African painted dogs and zebra, to name a few! Take a boat cruise on the Chobe River and marvel at the wonderful spectacle of life.

Sleep under the stars on the Makgadikgadi Pans . This is one of the biggest salt pans in the world and is perfect for stargazing. The lake would have covered an area the size of Switzerland.

Botswana also offers unique experiences, such as cultural tours with the San tribe, also known as bushmen. They are among the oldest tribes in Southern Africa.

The San people have a rich cultural heritage and live a traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site The Tsodilo Hills  and learn about the ancient rock art.

Botswana is a true African jewel.

Best time to visit Botswana for honeymoon: April to October

How to get to Botswana: Fly to Maun Airport (airport code: MUB) from Johannesburg or Cape Town. You could also start or end in Livingstone in Zambia (airport code: LVI) or Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe (airport code: VFA).

Where to tag on to Botswana: As you can see, you can easily plan a multi-destination honeymoon if you add on Victoria Falls. You can also travel through the Kalahari Desert from Namibia.

Kenya in East Africa is the most renowned and famous of African safari honeymoon destinations along with Tanzania and we know couples ponder between them when they decide on an African safari honeymoon.

It’s easy to see why. Kenya has vast and diverse landscapes and a wide variety of national parks and reserves with great infrastructure.

The most famous area is the Maasai Mara National Reserve , in the southwestern part of the country. The Maasai Mara has a shared eco system with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park .

Couples can also spot the Big 5 – elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, and rhinoceros – in different parks across Kenya. Take a hot-air balloon ride over the savannah.

Witness the annual wildebeest migration , when over two million animals — wildebeests (and zebra and gazelle) are on the move, racing through the vast wilderness, creating one of the most spectacular and unique wildlife viewing experiences on the planet.

Meet the famous nomadic tribe, the Maasai, and learn about their ancient way of life. See the flamingos at Lake Nakuru . Visit Amboseli National Park with the iconic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro .

Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park are two of the oldest parks in Kenya.

Get more off the beaten track in Ol Pejeta Conservancy where you can visit Rhino refuge on the foothills on Mount Kenya in Laikipia County.

There is a lot more to Kenya than safari. Nairobi , the capital, is worthy of a day or two exploration and is home to the social-media friendly Giraffe Manor (which books out at least one year in advance!).

You can also visit tea plantations. Discover the coral reefs and white-sand beaches along the coast near Mombassa. We love Diani Beach and the lesser visited Lamu archipelago.

Best time to visit Kenya for honeymoon: Late June to October. Avoid travel from March to May.

How to get to Kenya: Nairobi (airport code: NBO) is very easy to get to, as one of the biggest hubs in Africa.

There are direct flights from London, Paris and Amsterdam, Dubai, Doha and Istanbul, to name a few. You can use Nairobi as a transit hub to other parts of Africa, too.

Where to tag on to Kenya: You easily combined Kenya with neighbouring Tanzania for a multi-destination safari honeymoon across the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti.

Ideal if you don’t want to choose between them! Nairobi is also a good hub to get to Uganda and Rwanda.

Kenya’s beaches are beautiful and you can also easily get to Tanzania’s Zanzibar island or Mauritius for a beautiful luxury safari and beach honeymoon, all-inclusive beach honeymoon or Seychelles for an island hopping honeymoon.

Escape from the crowds in this lesser discovered Great Rift Valley gem. Malawi might not be the first of African safari honeymoon destinations that comes to mind for many couples, but it’s perfect for couples looking for the road less travelled.

This beautiful country in southeastern Africa has a lot to offer, including stunning natural landscapes, diverse wildlife, and welcoming faces. In fact, it’s called the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ because of the friendly nature of its people.

The third largest lake in Africa, the crystal clear ‘Lake of Stars’ that is Lake Malawi, is the big draw here. You can actually go to the beach in this landlocked country! There are sandy beaches along the narrow, giant lake.

Hike along Kande Beach or just relax under a baobab tree. Go kayaking or snorkelling and diving. Get truly off-grid on Likoma Island. Catch a sunset over the lake. Discover hidden waterfalls on a hike at Africa’s third highest mountain, Mulanje Massif.

Malawi’s beautiful wilderness suffered decades of decline because of poaching but have got their act together in protecting their land in association with African Parks, making it an up and coming prime safari destination.

Get off the beaten track in Liwonde National Park which until 2015 was in decline but now has a thriving ecosystem. Go mountain biking in Nyika National Park and spot some zebra. Malawi is a land still undiscovered!

Best time to visit Malawi for honeymoon : May to October

How to get to Malawi: There are direct flights to the capital city, Lilongwe (airport code: LLW) from Nairobi

Where to tag on to Malawi: Malawi is best travelled overland on a tour from Tanzania via Zambia and Zimbabwe. You can also travel to Mozambique (but to get to the beaches from Lake Malawi will take around 3 days going off the beaten track).

Between Angola, Botswana, South Africa and the Atlantic Ocean, we’re nothing less than obsessed with Namibia .

Like South Africa, it’s best seen by hiring a vehicle and hitting the road on a romantic honeymoon road trip to see the diverse, vast open spaces and dramatic landscapes.

If you look at the pictures of the world’s oldest desert, the Namib Desert , the towering red sand dunes of Sossusvlei and the eerie wildness of the Skeleton Coast you might think this is some barren land but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Namibia is home to one of the best safari honeymoon destinations in Africa. Even the desert is in inhabited by desert-adapted elephants, rhino, giraffe, lions and zebra. Go hiking in Fish River Canyon and whale and dolphin-watching in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

The Himba people live an ancient semi-nomadic lifestyle and are known for their striking appearance as they cover themselves with a paste that gives their skin a red hue.

You can learn about their way of life with a respectful visit to their land. In the Kalahari , we can also find the San people who live in Botswana.

While the wild desert and Atlantic Ocean landscapes are a must, safari seekers will love Etosha National Park in the country’s north.

The salt pan has several waterholes where animals gather, making it easier to spot the incredible spectacle of life. See elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah and giraffe.

Vast numbers of springbok, gemsbok, zebra, and blue wildebeest congregate in large herds at watering spots.

The stark white backdrop of the immense salt pans makes them easily visible (and supposedly can even be seen from space!).

Namibia is the perfect African safari honeymoon destination for couples looking for a unique adventure . Plus, it is one of our favourite honeymoon destinations to go stargazing , too!

Best time to visit Namibia for honeymoon: May to October

How to get to Namibia: Fly to the capital Windhoek (airport code: WDH) from Johannesburg or Cape Town. You can also fly from Frankfurt, Germany (airport code: FRA)

Where to tag on to Namibia: Namibia is accessible from South Africa, so it’s very easy to combine with a city stopover in Cape Town or if you’ve more time to explore the rest of the country.

If you’d like to add a tropical beach, you’ll need to stopover in Johannesburg. You can also travel through the Kalahari Desert to Botswana and on to Victoria Falls if you’ve more time.

The Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda , is one of the smaller countries in Africa and a delight to explore.

In the Great Rift Valley, bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, it’s abundantly beautiful with verdant rolling hills and mountains. Rwanda’s people are warm and welcoming.

It’s also one of the planet’s major coffee and tea producing regions.

Explore one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, Nyungwe Forest National Park . Search for chimpanzees. They love to hide so it’s never 100% guaranteed to see them, but there are many other primates to meet, too.

Go kayaking on Lake Kivu . Akagera National Park , in the country’s east, has a wide range of wildlife to discover, including elephants, lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, hyenas and antelopes. This area is a great conservation success story.

Rwanda is home to some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas , along with Uganda. They certainly are the star attraction.

Go Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains . Trek through the dense jungle in search of our cousins.

There is less than 2% in the difference between gorilla and human DNA! Learn about the work of legendary primatologists Dian Fossey .

You might know Rwanda for its tragic and recent history and you can’t leave the country without visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial .

Like Cambodia ’s Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, you might be reluctant to visit such a painful reminder of what humans can do to other humans, but this is a thought provoking place and important experience.

You can see why we couldn’t leave Rwanda out of our top safari honeymoon destinations in Africa. The stunning, lush, misty landscapes are waiting to be discovered!

Best time to visit Rwanda: June to September and December to February (you can go gorilla trekking all year-round)

How to get to Rwanda: Fly to the capital city, Kigali (airport code: KGL) via London, Istanbul, Dubai, Nairobi & Johannesburg.

Frequently asked questions about planning a honeymoon safari

How many days do you need for a safari.

We’d recommend at least 7 nights for an overland safari in East Africa and Southern Africa.

However, some couples will opt in for a fly-in safari where you choose a lodge or tented camp and fly there for 3-4 nights in one place. However, this means you miss out on seeing multiple parks.

In South Africa, it’s more common to do 3-4 night safaris.

Not only are there many other activities and things to see and do in the country, but the distance isn’t as great and you can see wildlife in places like the Eastern Cape at the end of the popular Garden Route.

Gorilla Trekking will usually be 2-4 nights, but you need to allow for travel time, too, and if you plan to visit other destinations in Rwanda and Uganda.

Where can we stay on a honeymoon safari in Africa?

No matter what African safari honeymoon destination you choose, you’ll find a vast array of accommodation options to choose from.

You can opt for a small group adventure tour with basic facilities to more modest lodges and tented camps.

A lodge is usually a concrete structure / building made of stone or wood. A tented camp will involve safari tents. Both accommodation types range from basic to ultra luxury retreats and there are many more options in between.

There are unique places to sleep, such as Tent with a View ‘s Bushrover in Tanzania or Kruger Shalati – Train on The Bridge & Garden Suites in South Africa

How long are safari game drives?

When you’re staying in a lodge or tented camp, you will usually take two game drives per day.

Wildlife is most active in the morning and late afternoon. You might also take guided safari walks or night time safari, too.

Game Drives usually last 3 to 4 hours. Expect to be up very early for the best opportunity to see wildlife.

Gorilla Trekking can last anything from 1 hour to 8 hours, so be prepared!

If you’re travelling overland from lodge to lodge, you could be out all day.

What should we wear on safari?

Neutral tones – beiges, light browns and khakis are the name of the game.

You don’t want to wear any bright colours, blues or blacks. Avoid camouflage print, which can cause issues in some destinations.

While it may be tempting to go with safari-chic, this may not a time for full on glamour. We’d strongly recommend practical hiking footwear.

Make sure you’ve worn your footwear before travel, you don’t want to break in new shoes in the African wilderness!

We highly recommend investing in insect repelling clothing. It can really make a difference.

Which country is the cheapest for a safari honeymoon?

All honeymoon safari destinations will have lodges, tented camps and safari tours that range in price so it will depend on your travel style and whether you travel in high, low or shoulder season.

Botswana is considered one of the most expensive safari honeymoon destinations.

South Africa and Kenya can be excellent value and ideal if you’re looking for a more affordable safari honeymoon.

They are well established and, because of the excellent infrastructure and choice of accommodation, they have something to suit every budget.

Do we need travel vaccinations for a safari honeymoon?

Yes, you do. However, we cannot give medical advice and it is important to speak to a registered medical professional who specialises in tropical medicine before you depart.

From Malaria to Zika Virus , there are many aspects to consider when planning a safe, healthy honeymoon.

Vaccinations are recommended and you will need anti-malaria drugs. A yellow fever vaccination may be needed to enter the country depending on where you are travelling to and from.

Do we need a visa for travelling to Africa on honeymoon?

Depending on the passport you’re travelling on, you may need a visa for entry for most East Africa countries, plus six months’ validity on your passports along with spare blank pages.

You can get a visa from iVisa.com

We hope this list of spectacular safari honeymoon destinations in Africa has inspired you to plan a trip to the great continent!

It will be a trip you remember forever. Let us know in the comments where you’re going!

Happy Planning x

honeymoon african safari

In this guide, we’ll show you some of Africa’s most amazing safari destinations and break down what you can expect on a safari honeymoon, plus will help you get a head-start on packing by suggesting a few items you’re going to want to have with you on a safari honeymoon.

7 Safari Lodges Perfect for a Honeymoon

When it comes to planning your Safari honeymoon, the lodge or camp you stay at will make a big difference in your experience and the cost of your trip.

Ulusaba Safari Lodge, South Africa

There is a private game reserve in South Africa that Sir Richard Branson owns. The Ulusaba Safari Lodge is near the Kruger National Park and is within about 33,000 acres of open bush. There are hills that rise above the terrain, providing travelers with breathtaking views of the landscape.

The Ulusaba Safari Lodge has two main lodges, namely the Rock Lodge and Safari Lodge.

Those who seek romance in the African bush can request a private meal for two, spent under the stars for a perfect mix of safari and intimacy. They can also ask for a special bath oils service.

Little Ongava, Namibia

Little Ongava is within the private Ongava Game Reserve and is a sister resort to the Ongava Lodge. Little Ongava has three luxurious suites, making it one of the most exclusive and romantic safari destinations in the world.

Little Ongava sits on a hill and offers astonishing African savanna views. While overlooking a surrounding bush, Little Ongava guests also get to see the waterhole below.

The suites here also exude grandeur with private viewing decks, indoor and outdoor showers, and personal plunge pools. One can also expect impeccable service from its staff.

Londolozi Private Granite Suites, Kruger

Londolozi Private Granite Suites is a luxurious safari lodge located in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which is part of the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa. This exclusive lodge is renowned for its exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities, high-end accommodations, and commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism.

Guests at the lodge can enjoy a wide range of safari activities, including morning and evening game drives in open 4×4 vehicles, guided bush walks, and birdwatching excursions.

Angama Mara, Masai Mara

Angama Mara is a renowned safari lodge located in the Maasai Mara region of Kenya, one of Africa’s most iconic and wildlife-rich destinations. The lodge is known for its stunning location on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, which provides guests with breathtaking views of the Maasai Mara below.

Xigera Safari Lodge, Okavango Delta

The best places to go on an african safari honeymoon.

Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, and Tanzania in East Africa are home to some of the most popular African safari sites.

Tanzania & Kenya Honeymoon Safaris

Safari-goers to Tanzania will get a chance to witness the Great Migration, a yearly trek made by over 1 million wildebeest (and other animals) in search of water, and learn about the land and local culture from tribes who have called the Rift Valley home for thousands of years.

honeymoon african safari

You’ll also roam the plains in search of Africa’s ‘Big 5’ – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo. East African safaris provide the best chance to see all 5. Botswana and Tanzania are among the most expensive safari locations, while budget and mid-range safaris are more prominent in Kenya .

South Africa Honeymoon Safaris

Finally, South Africa is quickly gaining attention among the new wave of safari enthusiasts. South Africa has a beautiful landscape and a diverse wildlife population plus a thriving wine region, and cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Pretoria are hip and chic with a bustling nightlife and restaurant scene. Safaris in South Africa cater to a younger crowd and are much more affordable and customizable. For example, you can add a wine-tasting or vineyard tour to safari packages in the Cape.

Uganda Honeymoon Safaris

Uganda is the most affordable option in East Africa. Uganda is known for its diverse wildlife and stunning natural landscapes, making it an excellent destination for safaris.

One of Uganda’s most famous safari activities is gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Also, Kibale National Park is renowned for its chimpanzee-tracking experiences.

honeymoon african safari

East African safaris are also popular because of their proximity to beautiful beach destinations like Zanzibar and the Seychelles . Many luxury safari companies offer add-ons to these romantic African honeymoon spots that include flights and a few nights in a luxury resort.

Rwanda Honeymoon Safaris

If you want to see gorillas in their natural habitat, you can take a gorilla trek in Rwanda or a small protected region in the Congo, but there are strict time limits to how long you can spend with them. You can add a gorilla trek to a safari package, or do the trek on its own.

What Are Accommodations Like On Safari?

That’s entirely up to you! There are hundreds of safari operators to choose from offering budget, mid-range, luxury, and ultra-luxury packages. You can choose your package based on whatever you’re comfortable with.

Budget safari accommodations are little more than a tent with a sleeping pad and sleeping bag. Facilities consist of an outhouse somewhere in the park, and there will be no running water or electricity.

Mid-range accommodations are usually locally owned motels or hotels. Expect a few nights in tents as well if you go with a mid-range package. If you don’t want to camp at all, you can spend a few dollars more to stay in hotels only.

Luxury and ultra-luxury safari lodges have all the comforts of home. Tents are large and intricate with separate rooms for eating, lounging, and sleeping. Lodges in the middle of nowhere have romantic touches like wrap-around porches or standalone clawfoot bathtubs overlooking the savannah, creating an ambiance of romance for your safari honeymoon.

Luxury accommodation packages also include butler and housekeeping services, a private chef, and a fully stocked minibar with premium spirits, beers, and wine.

How Long Should Your Safari Honeymoon Be?

The trip to Africa from the United States takes almost an entire day, so a safari is definitely not a weekend getaway. Most experienced safari-goers recommend spending at least 8 – 10 days on safari in order to get a full experience. If you want to really immerse yourself in nature, spend 2 or 3 weeks on a safari honeymoon. Extra activities to fill your days include romantic hot air balloon rides, tribal visits, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and walking tours.

That being said, 3 or even 2-night group safari packages are available.

When Should You Plan Your Safari Honeymoon?

A safari honeymoon can be done almost year-round in Africa depending on where you want to go. The least popular time of year to go is July when the weather can be stifling hot; however, the plains are dry and barren this time of year as well, so there is almost nothing obstructing your view of the wildlife if there is any around, and it’s when prices are at their lowest.

If you want to witness the Great Migration, the best time of year to go is between the months of May and December. By June, almost all the rain has cleared up and the savannah is crawling with animals. In October, things are starting to settle down as herds return to Kenya, and while animal sightings are still common, they are less frequent towards the end of the year.

The dry season in South Africa is between May and August and is the best of year to go on a safari honeymoon on the Cape, again because of the dying off of foliage.

If you want to see baby animals exploring their surroundings, plan your safari honeymoon between the months of January and May.

What To Bring On Your Safari Honeymoon

Traveling light will make your safari honeymoon easy and enjoyable, but there are a few essentials you should make sure to throw in your suitcase.

Clothing in neutral shades will help you blend into your surroundings and make you less noticeable to skittish animals who might run from loud, bright colors. Cotton and linen and thin, breathable fabrics that also provide enough cover to filter out UV rays. A wide-brimmed hat with a mosquito net face covering, sunglasses, binoculars, sunscreen, and bug spray for everyday use can be packed in your day bag. Also, be sure to bring a microfibre face covering to keep dust out of your mouth and nose while driving across the dusty terrain.

For footwear, pack sturdy hiking shoes that cover your toes and sandals to wear at camp. Bring enough layers for chilly camp nights and a raincoat, plus any bedding you might need if your tour operator doesn’t provide any. Most budget tours will give you a tent only and you are responsible for bringing your own sleeping bag or mat. Luxury operators provide all the bedding you need.

How Much Does A Safari Honeymoon Cost?

The cost of a safari varies greatly depending on where you want to go, what time of year you’re heading on safari, and what kind of accommodation you prefer. A safari in Africa can cost anywhere between $115 per person per day and over $1800 per person per day.

When traveling from North America, it’s almost always cheaper to fly to a major hub in Africa, and then book a connecting flight with a smaller, regional airline than it is to take a direct flight. Nairobi is the major hub for safaris in East Africa. In South Africa, it’s Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Delta Airlines has the most flights to Africa from the United States, with flights departing from Atlanta and New York to Johannesburg, Dakar, Lagos, and Accra (on the West and South coasts) at least once per day. Other airlines with direct service from the U.S. to Africa are Ethiopian, United, Egypt Air, Royal Air Maroc, Kenya Airways, Air Senegal, and Azores Airlines.

honeymoon african safari

The cheapest flights from the United States to Africa leave from Chicago, New York, Miami, Atlanta, and Washington D.C. They start at around $600 and can go as high as $950.

There are also additional costs to consider like visas, vaccinations before you travel, gratuities, and extra excursions or meals and drinks not included in the cost of your package .

The short answer is that safari honeymoons can be quite expensive, but they are also highly customizable. If you want to skimp on accommodation and spend more on excursions, you can. On the other hand, if you want to shell out on accommodation on your safari honeymoon and go on fewer excursions, waking up in a remote part of Africa’s savannah is still an experience that can’t be beaten.

No matter how you design your safari honeymoon, one thing is guaranteed: it will be an adventure you won’t soon forget.

Safari and beach is the perfect combination for an unforgettable honeymoon. Africa is undeniably one of the most romantic and exciting continents on the planet and it is here you can create the holiday of a lifetime.

Create the perfect Safari and Beach Honeymoon

Your honeymoon should be one of the best and most memorable holidays you will ever have. A safari and beach honeymoon can deliver on luxury, adventure, funtime, downtime, privacy and plenty of eye candy.   It is these criteria you will need to consider as well as which country or particular place you want to stay.

Our favourite destinations for a luxury safari and beach honeymoon are Tanzania or Kenya.  Safaris in Tanzania tend to be in the northern parks, including Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater or the Selous Game Reserve in the south.  For beach time we recommend the short hop over to Zanzibar where there are some stunning boutique hotels right on the beach and beautiful white sandy beaches they are.  Kenya is famed for the Masai Mara which links very well with the Kenya coastline as well as Zanzibar.  For a more exclusive safari, Botswana is hard to beat on the luxury stakes, particularly the Okavango Delta, with stunning camps not compromising on modern day luxuries.  Or for more variety, South Africa has numerous parks with the added option of Capetown and the Winelands.  The islands of the Indian Ocean are also well connected to east and southern Africa for those seeking a more resort style hotel.

As honeymooners, you can relish in some of the most romantic escapes on the planet. Ever considered ballooning over the Serengeti whilst on your safari and beach honeymoon adventure, or watching Africa play out below you on the far-reaching plains? Fly camping in the bush – just you with your camp team in the middle of nowhere? Floating down the river on a boat safari, stopping to have a breakfast en route? Or a sundowner in the middle of the Masai Mara with a tree for shade?

Staying in the most luxurious tent you can imagine, with a plunge pool on your terrace, from where your safari begins – binoculars not even necessary? How about tracking gorillas in Rwanda? End this with a boutique beach lodge for some relaxation or high spec hotel & spa for top end escapism, perhaps will a little dolphin safari to boot

The East African country of Kenya has been a highly popular safari destination for decades, a fact that will come as no surprise when you consider its boundless expanses of bush and the numerous national parks which it encompasses, most notably the Maasai Mara, Meru National Park, Tsavo and Amboseli National Park. Kenya is also home to the majestic Great Rift Valley and is renowned around the world for being the site of the Great Wildebeest Migration, which you could be lucky enough to experience on your honeymoon depending on the time of year. Some of the spectacular resorts you can consider for your Kenyan safari honeymoon include the likes of the delightfully rugged Governor’s Main Camp, Mara Bushtops, and Segera Retreat.

South Africa

South Africa is a country of breathtakingly diverse landscapes, rugged coastline, and an abundance of flora and fauna. Like Kenya, it is also home to its fair share of national parks, among them the world famous Kruger National Park where, if you are lucky enough, you may just get to see the Big Five. Kruger is nearly 120 years old and is one of the best parks on the continent, boasting over 2000 plant species, 517 kinds of birds and 147 mammal species. It also features fascinating historic treasures such as bushman cave paintings and awe-inspiring archaeological sites. As well as taking in Kruger you can also head to the stunning Eastern Cape, which Nelson Mandela called home, and experience the wild beauty of the inhabitants of the Addo Elephant National Park or explore the Wild Coast. If you do visit this part of the country, why not opt to spend a few nights at Shamwari Private Game Reserve, with its luxurious accommodation, 5 star luxuries, and its winning brand of responsible tourism, the perfect option for an unforgettable ‘safarimoon’.

Botswana is a nation blessed with the world-renowned Okavango Delta, and is said to offer the best safari experience on the continent as a result. Come here for your safari honeymoon and you are sure to marvel at the country’s spectacular and varied terrain and its diverse animal populations, which include majestic lion prides and large herds of elephant. The unspoiled landscapes and its abundance of wildlife are due to Botswana’s rigorous conservation policy, which seamlessly combines with the president’s endorsed brand of low-volume but high-revenue tourism practices to benefit both visitors and the landscape and its flora and fauna. There are a number of camps and mobile safaris to choose from in Botswana but whichever one you select for your honeymoon you are sure to experience mesmerizing game viewing and scenes of breathtaking natural beauty.

If you want to spend your safari honeymoon in Tanzania you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a location, as this is a land famed across the world for the quality of its game viewing. From the often-filmed plains of the Serengeti, familiar from all those Attenborough documentaries, to Mount Kilimanjaro and the stunning Arusha National Park, Tanzania is undoubtedly blessed with game reserves. There is also so much to see, do and experience in the country’s parks, such as bird watching, canoe safaris, fishing, hot air ballooning, walking safaris and even chimpanzee tracking. Then, of course, there is the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Great Migration, which takes place each year and is rightly known as the greatest (wildlife) show on earth. A wide variety of accommodation is available in Tanzania’s sixteen parks, ranging from luxury tented camps to guesthouses, lodges and even a hotel or two.

Sri Lanka is an incredible destination for a safari honeymoon, with a wide range of national parks, which are home to diverse wildlife to explore as well as an excellent approach to conservation. One of the country’s most ‘must-see’ animals is the elephant – and you can see them in just about any national park in Sri Lanka. Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places to see herds of elephants in the wild, with guaranteed elephant sightings, as the park is home to around 400 elephants. For more diverse wildlife spotting, Yala National Park is considered as one of Sri Lanka’s most incredible national parks to spot wildlife. Take your binoculars and spot Sri Lankan leopards, golden palm civets and sloth bears – this park seems to have it all! There’s many ways to enjoy a Sri Lanka safari honeymoon, from thrilling jeep safaris, leaving you on the edge of your seat with excitement – to walking safaris that allow you to take in nature at a more relaxed pace. One of our favourite recommendations for couples is a hot air balloon ride over Sri Lanka’s sprawling natural landscapes to see wildlife from a bird’s eye view. Combine your Sri Lanka honeymoon with a golden triangle tour that includes incredible national park visits with jeep safari tours for a thrilling safari honeymoon unlike no other. South Africa Honeymoon Safaris

The variety of attractions and easy travel conditions make South Africa a great choice for a honeymoon. While the wildlife viewing is superb, few people come here for a stand-alone safari. Cape Town, a cosmopolitan and scenically beautiful city, is just one of the other top attractions the country has to offer. But South Africa’s biggest drawing card is the variety of its landscapes; rugged mountains, fairy-tale forests, grassy savannah and the stark beauty of the desert. The country’s network of 19 national parks and hundreds of other reserves protects a rich mosaic of habitats and a corresponding diversity of animals. Meanwhile, offshore of the 2,850km coastline, an exceptionally rich marine life inhabits a parallel world.

6 Questions About South Africa Honeymoon Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

honeymoon african safari

Is South Africa recommended for a honeymoon trip?

“While South Africa caters to any kind of visitor, honeymooners will be thrilled to have a choice of enchanting destinations suitable to couples wanting to spend time together. There is so much to see and do. When putting together an itinerary you’ll find yourself spoiled for choice. South Africa’s incredible landscapes bring out the romantic in most of us. These peaceful surroundings offer the perfect environment to focus on a loved one. Picture waking up together and listening to the chorus of African birds or watching a herd of elephants with their babies at a waterhole. In the evening you could be gazing at the stars far away from significant light pollution and cuddling up after dinner at the campfire while listening to a hyena whooping in the distance. A honeymoon safari is all about sharing these kinds of special moments together.”

How many days is ideal for a South Africa honeymoon safari?

“It’s hard to say how many days you need for a honeymoon safari in South Africa. However, if you’re coming from far away, you’ll probably want to make the travel worthwhile. A honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, so you shouldn’t rush it. I think you should be away for at least 10 days; more is obviously better. Most visitors to the country combine a safari with other trip components, such as time in Cape Town or on the beaches of KwaZulu-Natal. To get to see a fair amount of South Africa’s attractions, you really need a two- to three-week tour. However you plan your stay in South Africa, you should always be realistic and not try to cram in too much. A full itinerary looks good on paper, but quality time in fewer locations usually makes for a better holiday. With limited time you can make use of the good network of domestic flights or you can focus on one area, such as Cape Town and the Garden Route, or Kruger National Park and surrounds.”

What are South Africa’s most romantic places?

“There are some very romantic spots in South Africa, ideal for a honeymoon safari. The world-renowned Kruger NP is a great choice. While the south of the park has the highest animal densities, the north sees fewer visitors. For a very exclusive experience, you can treat yourselves to a couple of days in one of the private reserves of Sabi Sands. Packages here are relatively pricey but they include five-star luxury accommodation ideal for an intimate holiday. Further south is the cluster of Zululand reserves. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve is very scenic and well-known for its healthy rhino population. The beautiful coastline makes this part of the country another favorite with newlyweds. Cape Town and the winelands feature on many honeymoon itineraries, and the drive along the Garden Route is arguably the most picturesque in the country. This area isn’t known for its wildlife, but there are several good safari options here all the same. Addo Elephant National Park is a Big Five destination, and elephants are particularly relaxed here. For more luxury and exclusivity, consider a stay at one of the Big Five private reserves in the area, such as Kwandwe and Shamwari Game Reserves. They offer superb wildlife viewing in a similar style as at the more well-known Sabi Sands. ”

Can we extend our trip with some days on the beach or Cape Town?

“When going on a honeymoon safari in South Africa’s parks and reserves, you might want to add on a few days to explore some of the country’s other attractions. Cape Town, with its vibrant city life, wild surroundings and world-class fine-dining restaurants, is a winner on any honeymoon itinerary. And who doesn’t want to spend the last days of their honeymoon relaxing on a tropical beach to enjoy some sand and sun, and most of all, each other’s company? The KwaZulu-Natal coast, with its warm subtropical waters, is most suitable for a conventional beach stay. The popular Garden Route, with its mountains, forests, lakes and endless beaches along the Southern Cape, is mostly explored on a road trip between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. While these beaches are picture-perfect, the mild climate and rough waters make the Garden Route more suitable as a general travel destination. Although the South African beaches don’t lack in beauty, they are relatively unspoiled and there are few resorts offering typical beach-holiday packages. For a real sea-and-sand honeymoon getaway, you might prefer to add on a few days on the tropical islands of Mauritius or Seychelles.”

Are there special South African honeymoon safari packages?

“Several highly rated operators offer honeymoon safari packages to this varied country. South Africa ticks all the boxes for a romantic holiday. When planning your honeymoon safari, your operator will suggest an itinerary with carefully selected destinations and lodges. A lodge might be chosen because of its honeymoon suite featuring special touches, such as an alfresco shower for two, an amazing view or a private outdoor area to relax. Your operator will inform the lodges and the staff will go the extra mile to make the experience extra special. It’s all in the details: rose petals on the bed, an impromptu bush dinner under the stars and perhaps a spa treatment for two.”

Will we get enough alone time on our trip?

“A honeymoon safari is the ultimate occasion to spend precious time with the person you love. You won’t want the distraction of lots of people around you. Therefore I would recommend booking a private safari as opposed to a group safari. Not only will this be more intimate, it will also give you more flexibility. At the end of each day, your guide will discuss next day’s program with you and you’ll be able to make minor changes as long as it fits within the itinerary. You’ll be able to skip the odd game drive and have a relaxed morning at the lodge. The staff might be happy to organize a private breakfast in your suite. Or you might decide to spend the afternoon together at a waterhole, watching animals coming to drink. Even on a private tour there will probably be some shared activities, such as game drives or a boat trip, but there will always be plenty of opportunities to spend time alone, without other guests or even your guide.”

Eastern Africa Safari Honeymoon

A safari honeymoon in Kenya is one of the most exhilarating experiences, with destinations such as the Maasai Mara, you’ll never want to leave the country. The Maasai Mara reserve is an area of preserved savannah with the most spectacular wildlife animals such as giraffes, zebras, cheetah’s including the Big 5 and more. Witness the Great migration where over 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra along with other smaller herds of Gazelles and Elands migrate from Maasai Mara into the Serengeti and back. Be blown away by the sight of picturesque landscapes with the backdrop of the snowy peaks of Mount Kenya while you relax in luxurious lodges. On your trip, you’ll see the Maasai people, as this national reserve belongs to these people. Another spectacular place to visit is Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, which shares a border with the Maasai Mara and occupies a staggering 1.5 million hectares of land. As one of the oldest and most scientifically significant ecosystems in the entire world, with fauna and flora and weather patterns that have barely altered over a million years, it provides its viewers with a glimpse into the prehistoric past. You’ll explore its endless plains with over 2 million ungulates, 4000 lions, 1000 leopards, 550 cheetahs, 500 bird species, and more. You’ll gaze upon the great migration of wildebeest from the skies on a hot air balloon, enjoy splendid nights at luxurious lodges with rose petal baths, delight in couple’s messages, and sight spectacular sunsets with private dinners under a dark velvet night sky with gleaming stars. The Serengeti is truly romance personified making it perfect for a honeymoon safari getaway.

Southeast of the Serengeti is the Ngorongoro Conservation area, which is a protected area under a UNESCO World Heritage Sight, here is a must-see large volcanic caldera known as the Ngorongoro Crater.

Regardless of the time of year, our travel agents will give you recommendations for destinations that are best suited for a particular season. Allowing you to get the best of Africa on your honeymoon safari experience.

What does a day on an African Honeymoon Safari look like?

A typical day on a safari begins with an early wake-up call with the sound of the wild playing through your lodge. you’ll have a delightful breakfast and coffee before you begin an incredible game drive during sunrise. On your drive, you’ll be guided through impeccable areas and spot amazing African wildlife, as if waking up to perform for your experience.

After your drive, you’ll return to your lodge or camp and enjoy an amazing lunch, thereafter you are free to do whatever you want from a range of activities, including a refreshing dip into a swimming pool, a relaxing massage, a guided nature walk, and many more. In the evening you’ll get to experience another spectacular game drive and catch a golden moment as the sun sets across the savannah. Bringing along with it all the nocturnal African wildlife you missed during the daytime.

As you return you’ll be welcomed to the most mouth-watering dinner with refreshing beverages coupled with the view of spectacular stars shining across the skies.

An authentic South Africa honeymoon is lovely for romantic holidays, especially for those who want to mix up the romance with outdoor pursuits such as game viewing and walking.

A romantic getaway in South Africa_Tintswalo Atlantic wedding

If it’s bush luxury you’re after for your South Africa honeymoon, look no further than a lodge in a private reserve (for instance, Sabi Sands, Madikwe or Phinda), many of which have honeymoon suites and can arrange romantic gas lit dinners on a private terrace or deep in the bush.

Another popular venue for a honeymoon safari in South Africa is the Super-Luxurious Sun City complex , which lies just two hours’ drive from Johannesburg and borders the excellent malaria-free Pilanesberg Game Reserve .

Kruger as a honeymoon destination

Ideally, pair up your South Africa honeymoon with a few days at a coastal resort such as Umhlanga Rocks and Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal , Plettenberg Bay, and Knysna on the Garden Route , or even Cape Town itself.

Finally, no self-respecting foodie should miss out on the Cape Winelands on their honeymoon, which hosts some of South Africa’s finest, most gracious, and most romantic restaurants and wine-tasting venues.

Let us take care of the small things while you spend quality time together and enjoy your intimate moments in one of the most romantic safari destinations in Africa.

Another famous African safari lodge for honeymooning in Southern Africa is Lion Sands – an award-winning lodge that was just rebuilt in 2016 with stunning views of the Sabie River in Kruger National Park.

The rooms are enormous and uber-private, with fireplaces, viewing decks, and private pools.

Tintswalo Private Safari Lodge

Sharing an unfenced boundary with the renowned Kruger National Park, Tintswalo Safari Lodge sits on the pristine Manyeleti Private Game Reserve, home to some of the best game viewing and game drive experiences South Africa has to offer.

Royal Malewane

For a six-star safari lodge experience that is delectably deluxe, look no further than Royal Malewane , where you can watch elephants from your very own pool.

Royal Malewane is easily accessible by air and road and is located in the Thornybush Private Game Reserve on the Western Border of The Greater Kruger National Park.

The closest airport is Hoedspruit, and there is a private landing strip at Royal Malewane. This is an ultra-luxurious private safari lodge and an ideal South Africa honeymoon.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost?

B eing surrounded by giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, and cheetahs in Africa sounds like a dream come true. But it also sounds expensive. Getting a guide, secluded accommodations, and travel can add up. So, how much does an African safari cost? An African safari can cost between $200 and $1,600 per person per day. Read more on the breakdown of these costs below.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost on Average?

The cost of an African safari will vary depending on where it is, what type of accommodations you get, and what time of year you go.

The most budget-friendly, camping in a tent, will cost about $200 per person per day. The most luxurious African safari can cost up to $1,600 per person per day.

Your African safari cost includes all park admission fees, meals, camping equipment, drinking water, and transportation. They can be a short one-day adventure to a multi-week long excursion. You should account for tipping your guides during your journey. The standard tip is $10 to $20 per person per day.

Things That Impact Your African Safari Cost

You can do many things to cut your African safari cost, while other things will bring the price up. I always tend to focus on what’s important to me and splurge on those aspects. For instance, if you like staying in luxury accommodations, you can splurge on your stay and go during the off-season to save a little bit.

The Length of Your Safari

Obviously, the total cost of your safari will be more the longer your safari is. However, the daily cost is cheaper when you book multiple days under one guide. It’s like buying in bulk at Sam’s Club. You save money in the long run.

The Time of Year You Go

There is a high and low season for African Safaris. The high season is when school is out, and during the dry season. There will be more tourists and higher costs from June to September on most safaris.

The low season is during the rainy season, typically between March and May. The problem with going during the rainy season is animals don’t tend to come out as much. The best time to go on an African safari is during the winter, between January and February.

Where Your Safari Is

The country and park you decide to do your safari in will sway the cost. Doing a safari that goes across multiple countries will cost more while staying in one park is less expensive. South Africa has some of the cheapest safari options because they have more self-drive options, and the parks are built better for these types of excursions.

The Level of Accommodation

You can stay in everything from a camping tent that you could buy at your local outdoor store to permanent yurts with furniture and modern technologies. There are even resort-like stays that you can book for your African safari with pools, villas, and bar and restaurant service.

Your Mode of Transportation

Driving yourself through one of the many parks and reserves is an option sometimes, but it’s not the best option. Your best bet is to book a guided safari because the guides know where all the animals like to go. That way, you’re more likely to see all the wildlife you want.

Less costly guided safaris are also typically in open-roof minivans that they cram people into. The nicer African safari tours use nice jeeps that are entirely open, giving you a chance to see everything wherever you sit.

How Many People Go On The Safari

The more people that come with you, the less your African safari will cost. Most accommodations will hold two people, and some will hold up to five. They will still charge per person for the safari. Even though, it will be less than if you go by yourself because you are sharing one accommodation.

The Best African Safari Destinations

You can go on a safari in different areas of Africa. Each location has unique wildlife that they are known for. You should choose a particular destination depending on what kind of African safari experience you want. Some destinations are also more budget-friendly.

Kenya is the original safari destination. It makes sense, with multiple large game reserves, the great migration, and a slew of cultural experiences to encounter. Some of the best reserves to visit in Kenya are:

  • Masai Mara National Reserve- The most popular park in Kenya.
  • Samburu Game Reserve- Has unique wildlife, like Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffes, and Somali Ostrich .
  • Tsavo National Parks- The largest and most remote park in Kenya.
  • Amboseli National Park- You can see Mount Kilimajaro at this park.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park- Millions of flamingos and white rhinos live here .

There are many great lodges to stay at in and around these parks that will take you on a drive to see the wildlife every day. One that I recommend is Elephant Bedroom Camp. It gets its name because elephants frequent the grounds, making sure to say hello to all of the visitors. You may also see monkeys and Impalas from your luxury tent.

This camp has all of the comforts that you would see at any modern accommodation, including a pool, hot and cold water, electricity, and WIFI. You will get a daily drive through the bush in an open-air vehicle, a picnic lunch, cultural visits, and entertainment by Samburu warriors.

If your dream is to see a gorilla or chimpanzee in the rainforest, then Uganda is the African safari destination for you. It’s different than most other African safaris in the way that the safaris in Uganda are set in rainforests instead of desert land. You can even stop by some amazing waterfalls along your safari. Some parks to check out in Uganda are:

  • Murchison Falls National Park- Has various mammals, like giraffes, buffaloes, and crocodiles.
  • Bwindi Forest National Park- Has the largest population of endangered silverback gorillas.
  • Kibale Forest National Park- Has the highest diversity of primates in Africa.
  • Mgahinga National Park- A large park spanning three countries where endangered silverback gorillas live.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park- One of two places you can find lions that climb trees.

To be fully immersed in the rainforests that gorillas and chimpanzees roam, stay at Bwindi Lodge . You may get the chance to spot some birds and chimpanzees swinging from the trees in the Bwindi forest right from your room. There’s also a village nearby that has the award-winning Bwindi Bar.

Another advantage of staying at the Bwindi Lodge is you can trek into the forest to see the mountain gorillas and other wildlife instead of having to take a drive. They also have a waterfall trail for you to enjoy the landscape as well.

Botswana is a lesser-known safari destination, so it will feel more exclusive at a smaller cost. Even though it has a variety of landscapes to view different types of wildlife. One of the most popular types of safaris you can do in Botswana is a boat safari, where you can see elephants and hippos. The best parks to see in Botswana are:

  • Okavango Delta- The most popular park in Botswana, famous for boat safaris on the wilding channels.
  • Chobe National Park- You can take a car to this park, making it more accessible. Elephants are a popular group here.
  • The Kalahari- You can find a black-maned lion here during the wet seas on.
  • Makgadikgadi Pans- Find unique African animals across glistening salt pans.
  • Moremi Wildlife Reserve- One of the most remote and diverse wildlife areas of Botswana.

Staying at Abu Camp gets you up close and personal with elephants. Since the camp is next to a lagoon, there is a herd of elephants that call this camp home. There’s even a chance to sleep in the elephant boma for the ultimate experience. You can also experience every type of safari you want, whether it’s a game drive or a boat safari.

Abu Camp has super comfy accommodations with modern furnishings and all the luxuries you would see in any other hotel. There’s a plunge pool to cool off during the day while you wait for your evening safari. Each private canvas tent overlooks the Delta for amazing views.

Tanzania is home to the well-known Serengeti, known for the safaris that explore the great herd. It is also the home to Mount Kilimanjaro, where the most adventurous can summit its peak. This place is basically the home of everything you think of when someone says “Africa.” The most popular safari parks in Tanzania are:

  • Serengeti National Park- The world’s most popular destination for a safari.
  • Ruaha National Park- The largest park in Tanzania with many elephants and giraffes.
  • Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area- Home to the Ngorongoro Crater, where you can find the largest population of lions in the world .
  • Lake Manyara National Park- Home to a massive lake where you can spot animals looking for water during the dry s eason.
  • Mikumi National Park- Mostly flat grassland, making it easy to spot wildlife.

For the best views over the Serengeti day and night, Klein’s Camp is a great place to stay for your safari. It is situated just on the border of the national park, so they are one of the only camps to offer open-air night drives. It is also in the perfect position to watch over the Serengeti from your room.

Klein’s camp feels extremely exclusive because they have 10,000 hectares of privately leased land. You can go offroading, go any time of day, or follow a zebra trail. They will also take you on specialized photography tours and visit the Maasai village to see their unique culture.

South Africa

South Africa is where you want to go to save a few dollars. There is plenty of wildlife, but it has better infrastructure than most other safari destinations. That means there’s more opportunity to do a self-guided tour, which saves you tons. There are also great guided tours too. The best reserves in South Africa are:

  • Kruger National Park- The most popular park in South Africa with the big five.
  • Madikwe Game Reserve- A malaria-free, affordable park with rare wild dogs.
  • Sabi Sands Game reserve- A private reserve bordering Kruger National Park.
  • Phinda Private Game Reserve- Famous for cheetah sightings.
  • Tswalu Kalahari Reserve- The largest private game reserve in South Africa.

If you want to stay in luxury on your South African safari, Loapi Tented Camp gives you the safari aesthetic. However, it comes complete with a butler, fully stocked kitchens, and an environmentally friendly plunge pool. Each of the six accommodations has plenty of space between each, giving you a secluded feel.

Each safari home has its own butler, a private chef to cook all your meals en-suite, a study with wifi, a full bar, and indoor/outdoor showers. You will also get your own safari vehicle with a private tour guide to take you out every evening. If you don’t feel like taking a vehicle out, go horseback instead.

We are a couple in our 60's who would like to do a 7 day safari split 3 nts in Sabi Sands and 3 in either Timbivarti or Manyeleti. Probably starting in Johan and ending in Neilspruit. We have read a number of posts and have done a safari in Tanz/kenya. We don't want to self drive even if it's easy to do so. We want to visit 2 different lodges for 3nts in each. Our budget is mid range about 85000 rand in total. We would want a pool with a water hole on site and would like to do at least 1 bush walk during the week. In tanz/kenya we did a private tour visiting multiple lodges but always the same guide/driver on the safaries. Here is seems that the lodges provide their own safaris and the tour agents just build a package to get you there. Is this correct?? We have looked at Umlani, Tangala, honeyguide, umkumbe, langa langa, elephant plains etc. They seem to be in our price range if we book direct but then we have to find and add the transfer costs. We checked safaribookings.com and they have a number of 4 day packages to a specific lodge, but very few 7 day packages including 2 lodges.

Questions..

What 2 lodges/areas would complement each other and provide a good diversity in sightings? What are your favorite lodges in this price range?

What is the approx transfer costs from Johan to Timb? Timb to SS? SS to Nelspruit.

Any assistance/recommendations you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not all 2025 rates are released yet but I would definitely recommend Honeyguide and maybe Umkumbe or Elephant plains.

Transfer to Honeyguide to EP or Umkumbe to Nelspruit, these can be quite pricy , approximately R5000 pp. just an estimate on 2024 rates.

It is far in advance but the budget friendly lodges book out quickly so no harm in booking early.
