hornbill festival tour package

I recently toured Qatar during the World Cup with Varya and Mike’s team at World of Discoveries. The experience over three weeks was first class. Varya and her team nailed the detail for every aspect of the trip from planning and booking through to the actual travel, tours, sightseeing, transport, accommodation and ticketing to games. They were always accessible to deal with any issues that arose and went the extra mile to ensure the travelling group was happy, organised and safe. And they throw a mean party. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend World of Discoveries for trips of a lifetime.

Diana Kammunkun

Best Staff, Great Communication The communication and assistance from the Michael from the beginning, Alex during the pre-tour and post tour and Anna during the tour was better than exceptional; we were well taken care of. The staff truly cared about us having a memorable experience and their efforts greatly contributed to that happening. I’ll definitely be looking into their other tours.

Jeff & Cathy Sisler

We came across WOFDI last spring when we were trying to figure out how to attend the World Cup. The staff at WOFDI organized game tickets and accommodation for us. Communication was excellent throughout. They provided airport transfer and cultural tours as well. Wonderful experience!

Arturo Chaltelt

I trusted them with all the details and our experience was exceptional. World of Discoveries personalized approach is something I beyond appreciate; the team was in touch and answer my questions super timely and very clearly (I had many many questions). I received guidance on next steps as we were approaching the world cup and I knew I was not going to miss any details because they were on top of everything. The World Cup experience was above and beyond what we expected. We didn't have to worry about anything, World of Discoveries took care of the logistics and planned everything for us! even our side trip to Dubai was unforgettable! Thankful to companies that deliver above and beyond expectations and help us make memories that we will cherish forever. I can't wait for our next adventure!

Hornbill Festival: A Spectacular Showcase of Naga Culture – Your Essential Travel Companion

hornbill festival travel guide

The Hornbill Festival is a popular cultural festival celebrated in Northeastern India. It is known as the “Festival of festivals” and represents the cultural diversity of Nagaland’s tribes to encourage inter-cultural relations among them. The festival is held for 10 days from 1st December to 10th December every year and has lots of intimidating activities under its wraps.

As a travelogue writer, I had the opportunity to attend the first day of the Hornbill Festival during my trip to Kohima. I had already explored the top attractions in Kohima , which I shared in my previous post. With lots of excitement, I woke up early in the morning and got ready to attend the festival. After having breakfast at the hotel, we headed out to find a shared taxi that could take us to Kisama village, the venue of the festival. The journey was long but the anticipation of what we would experience at the festival kept us going.

Consider exploring the Hornbill Festival tour package to plan an exceptional tour experience for yourself.

How to reach Hornbill Festival?

The Hornbill Festival is held at the Kisama Heritage village in Kohima, Nagaland. To reach Kohima from Guwahati, we embarked on our journey by taking the early morning Jana Satabdi Express to Dimapur. From there, we hired a shared taxi to reach the capital of Nagaland. There are various trains that you can choose from to reach Dimapur from Guwahati, depending on your convenience. Shared taxis are also available throughout the day from the Dimapur railway station to Kohima. The shared taxi cost  stat from Rs 400 per person and took around 3 hrs.

How to reach Kisama Heritage village ?

Shared taxis are available near Kohima police headquarter to reach Kisama village.  It took 30 minutes to reach the festival venue. The taxi charged Rupees 50 for each passenger.

Which days of the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is the best day to attend?

First day of hornbill festival, the best day to  attend the festival.

On reaching Kisama, we first saw the big ornamented gate of Hornbill Festival. Passing the gate, we encountered young Naga boys and girls, dressed in their colourful traditional attires. They also adorned themselves with their weapons and shields used during wars and hunting. These young boys and girls were representing the various tribes of Nagaland. They were welcoming the guests. The smiles and youthful vigour of this young lot mesmerized the guests and brought zeal of festivity to all.

Hornbill festival: The Opening Ceremony

The festivities began with all the dances, folk songs and dance drama performed in groups. The various tribes of Nagaland made their presence felt with the performance of their own form of dance and songs. The other neighbouring states of North East India also represented themselves through various cultural performances. We enjoyed to our heart’s content as we swayed and smiled, listening to the soulful, energetic rhythms.

We saw various delicacies being prepared in the different Morungs. We saw people roasting pork, chicken , fish , buffalo etc cooked in the coal fire. There was rice beer, traditional stews made out of snail, dog, fish, etc. We were just spoil for choices.

We readied our taste buds and headed towards the Morung of different tribes.  ‘Kachari’ tribe’s simple snacks attract us and we had Rice beer with a special Prawn chutney . The combination tasted awesome. We saw others enjoying Pakodas, Fried Fish etc there.

There were stalls especially readied for vegetarians too. Snacks, sweets, hot and cold beverages were also available in different stalls. During lunchtime, the air of Kisama heritage village was thick with the aroma of different delicacies prepared by the tribes.

Tribal morungs and different tribes of Nagaland

Morungs is a special hut where youth practiced different skills like using bow and arrow, wrestling and making of different crafts etc. In Hornbill Festival Morungs took a very significant role where the people of different tribes stay in their hut during the festival and perform their cultural and traditional practices for the audience in front of the morung.

All the Morungs were decorated with the traditional items belonging to the individual tribes. Representatives of those different tribes were dressed in their traditional attires were standing in front of their individual Morungs, welcoming guests with smiles. Some of them were seen performing their traditional songs and dances in front of their Morungs. There were hustle and bustle everywhere and the place was lively with people’s laughter.

During Hornbill Festival every member of Nagaland aspires to portray the best of Naga food and culture. We felt privileged to be a part of this mesmerizing festival.

What to buy at the Hornbill Festival?

Everyone from kids to octogenarian finds something interesting to buy in the festival venue..

There are different stalls for shopping lovers too on the festival ground. One can shop for different handicraft and handloom items, jewelry, decorative items and souvenirs. It also has a collection of traditional utensils, pottery and different orchids. Buying a suitable gift for your loved ones in a must do here. One can see the display of unique and unusual costumes, traditional events, art and craft. The cultural procession and distinctive events like bike rally, stone pulling competition show the versatility of this festival makes it more exciting.

Shopping at Hornbill Festival

After spending a memorable day at the Hornbill Festival , we decided to stay in a camp for the night.

Camping at Hornbill Festival

Camp stay is the best stay ever and we like the ambience and simply delicious food provided by the team.  They provide us comfortable sleeping bags and blankets too to bit the cold chilly night.  Seating beside the fire and enjoy the night of Hornbill Festival was a memorable experience for us.

Hornbill rock concert and other events

Every year schedule is different so be plan accordingly..

If you are a die-hard fan of rock song then please keep in mind that rock concert took place in other major cities of Nagaland from 2016 onward. It took place in Dimapur, Mokokchung and other cities during the 10 days of Hornbill Festival.   During the course of the Hornbill Festival apart from dances, songs and indigenous games, world war 2 car rally, Naga chef competition, Naga chilli eating competition, Hornbill motor rally, Miss Nagaland beauty contest and Hornbill literature festival, Stone pulling competition etc took place.

What else to see during hornbill festival?

I have written enough about the cultural performance that took place in the Hornbill Festival. Apart from these a flower show of stunning and vivid colourful flowers, handloom and handicraft exhibition, craft  escape , Hornbill photo fest and horticulture show also took place in the Kisama heritage village.  Kohima museum also situated in a corner of Kisama village you will be delighted to take a glance in the museum when you get tired from watching the cultural programs.

My journey to the Hornbill Festival is indeed a lifetime experience.  I am happy to be able to join the festival and have got some first-hand experience.   Those who like vivid colorful culture, indigenous food, scenic nature and wildlife, we highly recommend checking Hornbill Festival  Tour package .

Tomorrow I am heading to Khonoma green village to explore the lifestyle and culture of Nagaland very closely. Read on my next post  Khonoma Green Village:  A magical village in Nagaland .

The eight Indian states that make up Northeast India are Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. It is home to over 100 ethnic groups and a wide variety of cultures. Travel in the area is generally safe, however extreme caution is advised while visiting any of the area’s more remote spots. You may have a lot of questions regarding India’s North East as a traveller preparing to visit or currently living there. This section is here to help you with any questions you may have.

  • Is a permit required for a trip to northeast India? Permits are not required to enter Assam, Meghalaya, or Tripura. To visit Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, you’ll need an ILP (Inner Line Permit). While an Inner Line Permit is not required to visit Sikkim, select areas of Sikkim such as Menmecho Lake, Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La, and Kupup in the east do. In the north, you’ll find Chopta, Chungthang, Lachung, Thangu, Yumesamdong, Yumthang Valley, Lachen, and Gurudongmar Lake.
  • Do I need to hire another second car to visit Tawang’s Bum La Pass/International border? Yes, as well as few other places of North East India, it is necessary to hire native vehicles that are licensed to travel that area.
  • Do you provide organised group excursions in Northeast India? Yes, look into fixed-date group excursions and sign up for the latest news and discounts.
  • What is the conditions of the roads in North East India? Few states can claim to have good roads. Many areas of the north-eastern states’ roads are in poor condition; expect some bumpy rides along the way.
  • What is the weather like in the northeast part of India? The region experiences a monsoon environment, with severe to extremely heavy rainfall occurring in months of June to September. The main source of rain is the southwest monsoon, with June being the wettest month.
  • Is there vegetarian food in the northeast? vegetarian food is available throughout North East India, particularly in larger cities such as Shillong, Tawang, and Guwahati. The variety and availability of vegetarian meals may be limited in smaller areas.
  • What kind of clothing and accessories should we pack for our trip to Tawang and Shillong? The climate of North East India is hot and humid, with plenty of rain. Forestland makes up a large portion of NorthEast India’s land reserve. Warm clothing should be brought at all times of the year.
  • What are the most popular hike & trek trails in Northeast India? Rhododendron Trekking, GoechaLa, Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking, Dzongri – Goechala Trekking, Dawki Trekking, Mechuka Trekking, Ziro Trekking, Sandakphu Trekking, Cave paths, The Dzüko Valley Trekking, and so on.
  • Do we see snow when we visit Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim? Yes, Snow can be seen in Gangtok, Katao, and Bomdila in Sikkim, and Tawang, Mechuka Valley, and other locations in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • When is the best time to travel to Northeast India? The months of March to June are thought to be the ideal for visiting the North East. These are perfect days for discovering the cultures, trails, and witness this lovely region, as they are always flowering.
  • When does the Kaziranga National Park open to the public? During the monsoons, Kaziranga National Park will be closed; however, following the monsoons, it will reopen. There are no set dates available. Locals are the only ones who can make changes. It is therefore preferable to visit during the non-monsoon season.
  • What about sanitation, access to toilets, and open defecation in North East India? North East India is a very good and healthy area to visit because of its cleanliness, hygiene, and elimination of open defecation.

Perhaps you already know, but there is a great difference between Moscow, St. Petersburg, and all other towns and cities in Russia. Visiting the countryside is a great opportunity to travel the real Russia and to see the common life of ordinary people. The best choice for a one-day Russian countryside experience is the Vladimir and Suzdal tour.

Vladimir and Suzdal are small towns that are famous worldwide because of their great history and picturesque architecture with numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the 12th century. Aside from golden cupolas of stunning churches and monasteries, you will experience a very rural real Russian outlook with bubbling streams and grassy meadows, chickens and livestock, and interesting and authentic local residents. All are a common sight on the streets, some of which remain unpaved. Be ready for a full-day trip and many unforgettable experiences during your Russian holidays!

•One day in a traditional Russian village

There is a great difference between Moscow, St. Petersburg, and all other Russia... The concept of this tour is to show you the real Russia with numerous small towns, pristine nature, abandoned churches and the life of people.

This tour does not include Golden Ring towns! Instead, you will see Staritsa town and Novgorod the Great, beautiful places to visit in Russia!

We will also visit an elderly couple living in a traditional Russia village. We will help them with their daily work - plowing the land (not by tractors, but by horses), caring for the livestock and cooking food in a traditional Russian oven… And surely we will taste some real fresh milk and eggs while they will be telling us about their common life, their habits, and the households.

The itinerary is perfect for those who are going to St. Petersburg. It takes only 4 hours to get there from Novgorod by a cheap local train.
