Colorado’s I-70 mountain corridor expected to be ‘slow moving’ this weekend as skiers seek fresh powder
Winter storm warning is in effect for much of the mountains, which can expect 1 to 2 feet of snow this weekend.
News News | Feb 2, 2024
Staff report
The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning that a winter storm could meet heavy ski traffic along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor this weekend.
Between 1 and 2 feet of snow is forecasted for much of the Colorado Rocky Mountains over the weekend. The winter storm is expected to overlap with ski traffic on the I-70 corridor Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3, the department said in a news release.
Before hitting the roads, drivers need to ensure their vehicle is fully equipped, including with chains or the proper tread tires , to handle winter weather, CDOT Director of Maintenance and Operations John Lorme said in the release.
“Traveling along Colorado’s mountain roads, specifically the I-70 mountain corridor, will be challenging this weekend, not only because of the winter weather that is predicted but due to heavy traffic as folks make their way up to take advantage of the snow,” Lorme said.
Additionally, the National Weather Service as issued a Winter Storm Warning through most of the mountains west of the Continental Divide, including most of Summit, Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Routt, Garfield and Pitkin counties and the southwest mountains as well. The warning runs through 5 am. Sunday, Feb. 4

During the last major storm cycle over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, gridlock traffic “paralyzed” the town of Silverthorne. I-70 became a “parking lot” of bumper-to-bumper traffic for parts of the holiday weekend and there were multiple mountain pass closures , including U.S. Highway 40’s Berthoud Pass, where an avalanche caught 10 vehicles .
Travelers could encounter slow traffic again this weekend. OpenSnow meteorologist Sam Collentine wrote in a travel forecast for I-70 that the wet and slushy road surfaces early in the storm will turn into icy and snow-packed road surfaces lasting through at least Sunday morning.
This weekend, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center is urging backcountry recreationists not to recreate along roadsides, including popular spots such as Berthoud Pass, according to the news release. This is not only for recreationists’ safety but for the safety of motorists who could be caught in skier-triggered slides.
Avalanche conditions will change throughout the weekend as the storm moves through the state and high avalanche danger is expected in most mountain areas from Saturday and lasting into Monday, the release states. Anyone traveling in the backcountry should check the forecast and carry an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel.
Drivers who encounter an avalanche while in their vehicle should stay in the vehicle with the windows rolled up, turn the vehicle off to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and call for help on a cell phone, the release states. Anyone driving over the weekend should plan ahead with extra water, food, coats, blankets and entertainment.
Motorists should avoid or limit driving during the brunt of the storm. Snow is predicted to make its way into Colorado’s northern and central mountains on Friday evening, lasting through Saturday night, the release states.
“It will be slow moving along the Corridor this weekend,” Lorme said. “So remember to be patient and make sure you are not the cause of road closures.”

I-70 West Traffic Management
Traffic incidents.
Traffic incidents range from a flat tire to a semi rollover crash. Traffic incidents on the I-70 mountain corridor can create major delays or cause a full closure of the interstate. Reducing incident clearance times improves the reliability of the corridor for all travelers.
Keeping You Safe
CDOT employs several strategies to help motorists enjoy safe, reliable travel on the I-70 corridor in winter. Specifically, motorists can expect such traffic control measures as ramp management , snowplow escorts , quick clearance of traffic incidents , and real-time traveler information through cotrip.org and 511.
Because Eisenhower Tunnel has no shoulders, when heavy traffic congestion or incidents poses the risk of back-ups, traffic must be stopped, or safety metering must be implemented to clear traffic and maintain access to the tunnel interior for emergency response vehicles. When road conditions on the approaches to the tunnel are adverse, vehicles lose traction and cause significant delays (such as the three-hour delays between Silverthorne and the tunnel on Feb. 9, 2014 ).
The highest travel delays of the winter occur when heavy traffic congestion necessitates metering Eisenhower Tunnel. CDOT will use the following mitigation strategies to achieve this:
Increase Ramp Management
Meter on-ramps to eastbound I-70 at Copper Mountain, Frisco, Silverthorne and Loveland to reduce traffic volume moving through Eisenhower Tunnel, and reduce eastbound back-ups from reaching the interior of the tunnel.
Snowplow Escorts
Conduct snowplow escorts from Silverthorne to Herman Gulch during adverse conditions to provide optimal road conditions and safe speeds during periods when back-ups into Eisenhower Tunnel are most likely.
Snowplow escorts involve short holds of traffic to allow CDOT snowplows to lead an escort of traffic with the Colorado State Patrol up steep mountain passes in adverse conditions. This allows for traffic to travel on freshly treated roads at a safe, controlled speed that helps reduce the occurrence of winter-related crashes and vehicle traction issues.
Commercial Vehicle Staging
When conditions require, close eastbound I-70 to commercial vehicles at Dotsero when road conditions and traffic volumes are such that a public safety emergency is likely and imminent.
Response Coordination
Conduct FHWA Traffic Incident Management training for corridor first responders.
Establish performance measures for traffic incident clearance.
Conduct routine incident debriefings and performance assessments.
Stage CDOT Heavy Tow and Courtesy Patrol units at locations with identified peak hour crash patterns, as well as increase hours of patrol units.
Work with partner agencies to implement snowplow escort procedures at steep grade locations in the corridor during adverse weather and traffic volumes periods with the high likelihood of crashes and spinouts.

FORECAST: Scattered storms on Friday lead into a warmer weekend full of events
Weather headlines.
- Scattered storms Friday afternoon, higher storm chance late Friday
- Warmer and windy for the weekend - winds may impact the Great Balloon Race and KDF Marathon
- Stormy at times Monday through Wednesday
LATEST FORECAST
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Clouds will be on the increase overnight as our next system begins to nudge its way in from the west. Thanks to the clouds and some warmer air moving in aloft, we’ll see lows dropping into the 40s and no lower by Friday morning.
Friday is a warmer day as the warm front moves through. This will also inspire the development of scattered storms during the afternoon that may increase as we head closer to sunset. Highs will be in the 70s on Friday.
Periods of thunderstorms will continue at times Friday evening into the overnight hours, especially along and north of the Ohio River. No severe weather is expected, but heavy rain is possible in select spots.
Lows will be in the 60s by Saturday morning. Thunderstorms may be ongoing pre-sunrise Saturday morning northwest of Louisville, and how long they stick around could impact the balloon race. Gusty winds will also be a factor for balloonists and runners on Saturday. Highs will be in the 80s.
Monday sees another uptick in thunderstorm chances as a cold front arrives, and storm chances will likely stick around through Wednesday thanks to that front stalling out nearby. Highs will still be in the humid 80s during that time despite the storm chances.
The Thurby, Kentucky Oaks, and Kentucky Derby forecast has trended a bit cooler today with highs in the 70s, but our question about how long storm chances will stick around after Wednesday is still there. At this time the Derby has the best chance of staying dry compared to earlier days.

Interstate 70 on-ramp in downtown Columbus closing for years. Will it impact your commute?
An interstate on-ramp in downtown Columbus will close for several years of construction starting iny May, the Ohio Department of Transportation said on Tuesday.
The State Route 315 southbound ramp to eastbound Interstate 70 will close May 10, a week later than originally announced.
The detour runs from southbound State Route 315 to eastbound Interstate 670 to southbound Interstate 71 to eastbound Interstate 70.
At about the same time, eastbound I-70 traffic will shift outside to newly constructed bridges as crews rebuild the existing roadway.
The work is part of ODOT’s ongoing Downtown Ramp Up project , which aims to reconstruct interstates 70 and 71 in downtown Columbus and alleviate safety and congestion problems.
Construction work on the full project began in 2010 and is expected to run until 2030 with a total cost of $1.4 billion.
All work is weather dependent and may be postponed or cancelled without notice, according to the news release.
