ICC Trophies Won by Sri Lanka
Though the level of cricket for the Sri Lankan team has declined a bit after the retirement of some of their premium players. But still, Sri Lanka is one of the most successful teams in history book. Since making their debut in 1982, Sri Lanka has won almost every major ICC tournament in the game.
Not just in ICC tournaments, their records in the Asia Cup are also phenomenal. Sri Lanka is one of the few teams that have won all three major white-ball events. They have won the ODI World Cup , T20 World Cup , and Champions Trophy in their history. Here, we will talk about all those major championships won by Sri Lanka in this game.
List of ICC Trophies won by Sri Lanka
1. 1996 odi world cup.
Sri Lanka became only the third Asian country after India and Pakistan to win the ODI World Cup. They created history in 1996, and it was Arjuna Ranatunga who led his country to success. The tournament was jointly held by India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The final game took place in Lahore between Australia and Sri Lanka. Batting first, Australia posted a challenging total of 241/7.
Chasing the target, Sri Lanka lost both of their openers for just 23 runs. But after that, Aravinda de Silva smashed an unbeaten century and made 107 runs. He got a good support from captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who made 47 not out. Sri Lanka made 245/3 in 46.2 overs and won their maiden World title.
2. 2002 Champions Trophy (joint-winners)
Sri Lanka’s second win in ICC events came in 2002. It was the 2002 Champions Trophy. It was held in Sri Lanka, and the hosts faced India in the final, which took place in Colombo. This game is remembered for various reasons. It started with Sri Lanka scoring 244/5 and India made 14/0 in two overs when the rain came and the game was washed out.
It went to the reserve day. The Sri Lankans made 222/7 in the first inning, and India were at 38/1 in 8.4 overs. Once again, the rain came, and the game was washed out on the reserve day as well. As a result, both India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners of the 2002 Champions Trophy. It was the first and only instance when two teams jointly won an ICC event.
3. 2014 T20 World Cup
It took the Sri Lankan team 12 years to get their hands on their third ICC championship. It came in 2014, when Lasith Malinga led his country to their maiden World title in the shorter format. The 2014 T20 World Cup took place in Bangladesh. Sri Lanka and India qualified for the final. It took place in Mirpur. Batting first, India had some struggles in their batting lineup.
Only Virat Kohli looked good, who made 77 off 58. India made 130/4 in the first inning. Chasing the target, Kumar Sangakkara led the way for his team to reach the target. He made 52 not out from 35 balls, and Sri Lanka made 134/4 in 17.5 overs to win their maiden T20 World title and third ICC overall.

'Weakening India’s Unity': PM Modi Slams Congress For 'Callously' Giving Away Katchatheevu Island To Sri Lanka
His remarks came in response to a media report citing an rti response, revealing that the indira gandhi-led government handed over the island to sri lanka in 1974..
Prime Minister Narendra Modi rebuked the Congress on Sunday for its alleged negligence in ceding the Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka. His remarks came in response to an RTI response, revealing that the Indira Gandhi-led government handed over the island to Sri Lanka in 1974.
PM Modi wrote on X that the Congress party cannot be trusted after sharing a news article that detailed the events that led to Sri Lanka's takeover of the island.
Eye opening and startling! New facts reveal how Congress callously gave away #Katchatheevu . This has angered every Indian and reaffirmed in people’s minds- we can’t ever trust Congress! Weakening India’s unity, integrity and interests has been Congress’ way of working for… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) March 31, 2024
The article claims that former Prime Minister (late) Jawaharlal Nehru dismissed the issue as insignificant. It also claimed that the article was dropped despite the Opposition's strong objections to the decision.
The report cited an RTI response obtained by Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, the Indira Gandhi government handed over control of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka in 1974. Official documents and parliamentary records show how India lost control of the island in the Palk Strait.
According to the documents obtained by K Annamalai, Sri Lanka compensates for its small size by tenaciously pursuing the 1.9 square kilometres of land about 20 kilometres from the Indian shore, based on claims that New Delhi contested for decades before finally acquiescing. Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, pressed its claim shortly after independence, claiming that the Indian Navy (then Royal Indian Navy) could not conduct exercises on the island without its permission.
In October 1955, the Ceylon Air Force held an exercise on the island. Its stance was reflected in a minute issued by the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on May 10, 1961, dismissing the issue as insignificant.
Earlier this month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin claimed that the Prime Minister "blatantly lied" at a rally in Kanyakumari on March 15 that Tamil Nadu fishermen were only facing trouble from Sri Lanka because of the DMK's "sin" in the past.

Sri Lanka pleased with commanding display on day one
Sri Lanka finished at 314/4 on day one of the second Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram.
Coming off a thumping win in Sylhet, Dhananjaya de Silva elected to bat first after winning the toss. Sri Lanka got off to the perfect start, with the openers seeing off the new ball and adding 96 for the first wicket.
Despite losing Nishan Madushka to a run out on 57, Sri Lanka kept marching forward on the back of solid contributions from Dimuth Karunaratne (86) and Kusal Mendis (93).
Though both the batters missed out on their respective hundreds, they helped Sri Lanka to a strong position at the end of day one.
Brilliant knocks from Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis put Sri Lanka in command 👌 #WTC25 | #BANvSL 📝: https://t.co/6PdUlnPi2U pic.twitter.com/Cxm5CtesUM — ICC (@ICC) March 30, 2024
Speaking to the reporters at the end of the day’s play, Karunaratne was happy with his team’s performance, stating that a 300-plus total worked in their favour. He added that this wasn’t a flat wicket and would assist the bowlers in the later stages.
“It’s not easy to bat here. There’s some movement for the fast bowlers,” Karunaratne said. “It’s tough for the first few overs, and then we have to hang on and play defensive. We know that once the ball gets softer, (we can) get some runs.
“The spinners bowled well, but there wasn’t much on offer for the spinners. Later it will be a good wicket for the bowlers as well.”
Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud makes up for dropping Rohit Sharma earlier by snaring the India captain in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022.
The left-handed opener also praised the upcoming crop of Bangladesh seamers, including the young Hasan Mahmud who finished the day at 2/64. Karunaratne was one of the batters dismissed by Mahmud.
“There are some good fast bowlers coming up. These are good signs for the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Hasan (Mahmud) has bowled really well, in good areas and he was really consistent.
“He troubled the openers, but we knew when the ball softened, runs would flow.”
Sri Lanka lead the two-Test series, which is a part of the ICC World Test Championship, 1-0 after beating the hosts by 328 runs in Sylhet.
