From Italy To Spain: 14 Things I Loved On Viking’s 8-Day Western Mediterranean Cruise
- Cruises and Sailing
- Mediterranean Cruises
- Types of Travel
- Viking Cruises
My husband Dean and I have never found large-ship cruising appealing; we prefer more intimate, personal travel experiences. In 1993, we took our first cruise along Alaska’s Inside Passage from Ketchikan to Juneau on a small ship of about 85 passengers.
There was a long pause (it’s called kids)… and then in 2016, we took a Rhine River Cruise on a Viking longship (about 200 passengers). After that, we were curious about Viking’s “ocean cruise” category so we decided to try it. We signed up for their Iconic Western Mediterranean tour, which started in Civitavecchia, Italy — about 50 miles northwest of Rome — and cruised along the Mediterranean shoreline to Barcelona. We’d been to northeastern Italy on a biking trip and to France along the Rhine, but we hadn’t seen their Mediterranean borders. Monaco and Spain were entirely new to us.
This cruise offered the luxury and service of Viking but a limited passenger count (about 1,000). We liked the fact that the ship sailed overnight, so no “all-day sailing” days. Plus, there was just something idyllic about a Mediterranean cruise.
Here are some of the things I loved about it.
1. Watching Ships In Livorno Harbor
Livorno, italy.
Livorno is the springboard to Pisa, Florence, and Tuscany. We’re hearty Minnesotans, so mid-November temperatures of 60s felt great to us. Because other passengers found it cold, we often had the ship’s spacious deck to ourselves. From the deck, we could see freighters at work along with fishermen on shore and mountains in the distance, covered in white marble (Carrara quarries are nearby.) It was fascinating to observe it all.
I don’t know the story behind these sightings, but it’s not every day you see a Looney Tunes ship with Tweety Bird and Sylvester painted on it. We also saw superhero and Batman ships.
2. A Day In Tuscany
San gimignano, italy.
We purchased an optional excursion called “ A Day in Tuscany .” After a 90-minute bus ride, we toured San Gimignano, a small, walled Tuscan village known for medieval architecture and old churches with artistic frescos.
Then, onto San Donato — a fatorria , or farm — for lunch. The owner spoke to us about the farm’s vineyards, meats, and olives, and said she is happiest when her guests fully enjoy the buffet. We complied, feasting on meats, cheeses, honey, spelt and green salads, olives, peppers, wine-marinated onions, crusty breads, and red and white wine. I could eat like this all day, every day.
Pro Tip: Be sure to check the physical requirements of Viking’s excursions, available on the trip page and sorted by day and port .
3. The Baptistry
Pisa, italy.
Viking included a walking tour of the Square of Miracles, including the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Cathedral, and the Baptistery. Some think the Leaning Tower of Pisa is overrated, but I liked seeing this icon.
The highlight for me was the Baptistry, where great timing meant we saw what they call a guardian stand behind a statue, cup her hands, and sing/chant in Italian. It reverberated to the domed ceiling and filled the space. What a sound!
Pro Tip: “Follow the lollipop.” On a walking tour, Viking guides use a red, numbered, round sign (fondly called a lollipop) to help passengers locate the right tour group.
4. Infinity Pool
Monte carlo, monaco.
A pinnacle experience for us was lounging in the infinity pool on the deck of the ship off the coast of Monaco. Once again, the deck was deserted except for us and a mother-daughter pair, soaking in these spectacular views. What a life!
5. Walking Tour Of Monte Carlo
This was the only port where we anchored in the harbor and shuttled in small boats, called tenders, to shore. Our 90-minute walking tour included sculptured gardens, medieval churches, the Prince’s Palace, and stunning views of the Maritime Alps, ending with free time in the city square. This is a gorgeous place.
6. Walking Tour Of Marseille
Marseille, france.
Marseille is rich in history, with two 17th-century fortresses reigning over the harbor called Old Port. One of the most striking sights on our bus tour was the popular Notre-Dame de la Garde (Our Lady of the Guard), a Catholic Basilica set high on a hill. I loved how our guide emphasized that people in Marseille pride themselves on doing things their own way. She’d say something rather outlandish and then say, “That’s how we do it in Marseille!”
7. The Grande Roue De Marseille
I loved seeing the Ferris wheel called The Grande Roue de Marseille — unforgettable and distinctive! It opened to the public in 2009 and added so much charm to the cityscape.
8. Marseille Christmas Market
In our free time, we enjoyed browsing carved figurines, unique décor, household items, hand-crafted candles, spices, scarves, and jewelry at the Marseille Christmas market. They also had a kiddie area with statues of Santa and reindeer.
Pro Tip: The market had controlled access with armed officers, a normal precaution due to terrorist attacks at European markets at the time. For us, it was benign: we walked through a body scanner and an officer checked my purse.
9. Parc National Des Calanques Boat Tour
Cassis, france.
We paid extra for an excursion and toured Cassis, the gateway to Calanques National Park. Cassis is a quaint little fishing village, complete with a hilltop castle overlooking the harbor. The calanques are “rock fingers” jutting off the coastline for miles. Our boat tour explored the inlets, interesting and ragged along the water. Beneath the rocks, hidden from our view, the guide told us there were caves and underground rivers.
Pro Tip: The castle overlooking Cassis is a hotel , and you can book one of their suites.
10. Panoramic Views Of Sète
Sète, france.
In the category of “you win some, you lose some,” we “won” in Sète. It’s my favorite example of waking up to a panoramic scene. Rooms facing the docked side of the ship saw streets and industry, but our stateroom was on the right side this time. Since we had sailed overnight, in the morning I opened the drapes of our stateroom to the jaw-dropping curve of the city, the harbor, and the mountains — beauty everywhere.
11. Walking Tour Of Sète
Sète earned the nickname “Venice of the Mediterranean” because of canals that link the Mediterranean to an enclosed saltwater lagoon. It has the largest fishing fleet on the French Mediterranean and is famous for seafood. As we finished our tour, I loved seeing industry in action: two fishermen fixing their nets at the end of another day.
12. Basilica De La Sagrada Familia
Barcelona, spain.
The highlight of the walking tour of Barcelona was the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia (Church of the Holy Family). Local Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed this beauty. When we were there it was under construction, so we walked around it but couldn’t go inside. Our guide was well-versed in the exterior exquisite detail — it was a feast for the eyes.
13. The Beautiful, Well-Appointed Ship
If you’ve toured with Viking , you know their ships are beautiful. We loved our stateroom, the atrium, and the dining areas. So much function, design, décor, and so many little touches everywhere.
14. The Delicious Food And Daily Gelato
The food on the ship was over the top. Every kind and variety was available, including international flavors, great seafood, and gelato made daily on the ship. Free wine and beer were offered with lunch and dinner.
Do walking excursions offset calories consumed? No, not even close.
Bonus: The Pyrenees On The Flight Home
The cruise ended but the delights did not. As we left Barcelona, we flew over the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural border between France and Spain. I’ve heard of them, but I’d never been to this part of the world. What a surprise to look out the plane and see these majestic mountains.
There’s a lot to love about this cruise. I didn’t even touch on the topics of live violin and piano players in the ship’s atrium, the theater shows (Beatles, anyone?), trivia, the fascinating people we met, or the myriad of quiet places on the ship to settle in with coffee and a good book or conversation.
The Mediterranean is breathtaking, and these destinations showcase her beauty all along the way. When you go, I’m sure you’ll find many things to love about this iconic Western Mediterranean cruise.

Icon of the Seas Reveal: What Is Included in a Cruise with Royal Caribbean?
Revealing all the best things to do on icon of the seas..
By Amanda Mesa | Published on December 8, 2022
Arriving in 2024, Icon of the Seas℠ sets sail — and it's now open for bookings. It's in position to be a game changer to vacations, brimming with complimentary ways to fill every single moment of your cruise getaway with epic travel thrills , endless relaxing chill vibes , as well as world-class dining and iconic wows that showcase awe-inspiring entertainment including the magnificent AquaDome. With so many exciting things to look forward to, you may be wondering what cruise foods and vacation activities included in a cruise on the first Icon Class ship.
For starters, there's the largest water park at sea that's home to six record-breaking waterslides, an aqua park for kiddos that offers buckets of fun, an adults-only pools that goes long on beach-club vibes and never-before-seen culinary concepts across the ship's various neighborhoods. I'm most looking forward to the seven pools onboard, including the largest pool at sea and the largest swim-up bar. And that's barely scratching the surface of what the first-ever Icon Class ship has to offer.
What is (Free) Included in a Cruise on Icon of the Seas?
So, you're excited and ready to book a trip on the biggest ship to ever set sail. First things first: What is included on a cruise vacation on Icon of the Seas℠ ? There are so many wow-worthy things to do on Icon of the Seas from dining to entertainment, many of which are included in your cruise fare. That said, coming up with a game plan on how to fill every moment onboard can be overwhelming. Here's a pro-tip: Start by understanding what is included in the cruise price and what experiences are available for an additional fee. If you're trying to stick to a budget, knowing what's free onboard will simplify your vacation-planning process.
Here's an insider's guide to what is included onboard Icon of the Seas vs. what is considered extra.
Vacations thrills Included in Your Cruise
A cruise vacation is a great opportunity to go outside your comfort zone and try something new with thrilling activities like Category 6 . Located in the Thrill Island neighborhood of the ship, Category 6 is a sprawling water park that encompasses six ground-breaking waterslides, including the tallest waterslide on the seas, the first open free-fall waterslide on a cruise, the first family raft slide on a ship and exhilarating mat racers, just to name a few. The best part? Guests can ride any and all of the slides as many times as they like for free.
If you're like me, then it wouldn't be a vacation without getting your adrenaline pumping. The FlowRider * is a returning favorite to Icon of the Seas℠ . This huge surf simulator funnels 30,000 gallons of rushing water to create the perfect swells all day, every day. It's one of the top free things to do on any ship that has one onboard, including the first Icon Class cruise ship. You can choose to tame the waves — and try to keep your balance — upright on your feet or hit the water boogie-style on your belly. Rides are complimentary for cruise guests, though you can also reserve lessons with an instructor for a fee.
The Rock Climbing Wall is one of my favorite cruise activities. It's known for yielding some of the best views at sea, too. Located on Deck 16 in the Thrill Island neighborhood, Icon of the Seas takes rock climbing to the next level with Adrenaline Peak. It's the ultimate rock climbing experience: a thrilling, pulse-pumping scramble to a vantage point that will wow you. It even has racing for speed climbers. Adrenaline Peak is totally free for cruise guests; anyone ages six years or older is welcome to harness up and head to the top as many times as they like.
Discovering what is included on a Royal Caribbean cruise with Icon of the Seas℠ brings fun family-friendly activities to the next level. For example, the Lost Dunes for example is one of the best mini-golf courses at sea and it's included in your cruise fare. Tee up with your friends or family and putt putt your way across this nine-hole course complete with shipwrecks and fallen palms as obstacles — you'll find it's par none, and it's completely free. Challenge your family to a friendly contest: Whoever shoots a hole-in-one gets treated to ice cream.
There's no better place than the Sports Court to keep your family's competitive side going. Onboard Icon of the Seas℠ , this large play space offers a variety of different team activities, including basketball, volleyball, pickleball and dodgeball. You don't need to make a reservation or pay a fee to enjoy the Sports Court at any point during your cruise — just keep in mind that equipment is subject to availability and is first come, first served.
If you're cruising with your children, there's no shortage of activities and attractions to excite little ones onboard Icon of the Seas℠ . Like Playscape, a place for kids to slide, climb and play. There's also the cruise ship's beach-themed carousel, which doubles as a great photo opp. Both attractions are included in your cruise fare.
On a beautiful sunny day, head to Splashaway Bay, an aqua park for pint-sized cruisers. It's designed exclusively with tots to tweens in mind and offers plenty of cool interactive water features and mini waterslides just for little ones. Think water cannons, fountains, splash pools and more. There's also Baby Bay for your littlest adventure seekers. And of course, admission is included in your cruise fare.
Seven Pools, Endless Ways to Catch Your Rays
That’s right — seven. Each pool has its own unique vibe, and every one is free for cruise guests (though one is exclusively for Suite Guests…more on that later). So let’s take a tour of all the picture-perfect places to plunge. First stop is the Hideaway Pool — the only suspended infinity pool at sea, you can soak up ocean views surrounded by a multilevel sun terrace with its own resident DJ, whirlpools, a variety of seating and a dedicated bar. Then there's Royal Bay, the largest pool at sea with over 40,000 gallons of water, plenty of in-water loungers and raised whirlpools that offer beautiful ocean views. If you love a swim-up bar — and who doesn’t? — grab a seat at Swim & Tonic, the first swim-up bar in the Royal Caribbean® fleet. Water's Edge Pool has everything families need to make a splash with the little ones right in the heart of Surfside. And on the flip side, Cloud 17 is a chill adults-only pool you can pair with a poolside drink from The Lime and Coconut. Finally, the Cove Pool is located portside and directly facing the wide-open sea, offering stunning views and a laid-back vibe perfect for a day spent reading or listening to your favorite podcast.
What is Included on a Cruise for Suites Guests?
What is included on a cruise for suites guests? If you're staying in a Sky or Star suite, you can also access the Suite Neighborhood for additional perks and activities included with your cruise suite. Or, head to Grove Suite Sun Deck , a casual outdoor venue with its own exclusive pool just for suite guests.
Fun Things to Do on Vacation, the List is Endless
Since Icon of the Seas is the biggest ship to ever set sail, you won't run out of things to do. In fact, any guest can access any neighborhood onboard Icon of the Seas℠ for free, including Thrill Island , Chill Island , the Royal Promenade, Surfside and the Hideaway.
Another of my favorite cruising activities is catching the onboard entertainment, which is always free for cruise guests. Catch scene-stealing original productions that combine high-diving feats and aerial stunts at the AquaTheater, or watch as world-class ice skaters show off their skills at Absolute Zero . I love to make a date night out of it, with a fancy onboard dinner beforehand.
Wondering which restaurants are free on Icon of the Seas?
Wondering which restaurants are free on Icon of the Seas? There are several dining options where every bite is complimentary. This includes the casual, family-friendly Surfside Eatery buffet and Surfside Bites, your go-to for sweet and salty snacks. If you're staying in a suite, there's Coastal Kitchen and the Grove. More Icon of the Seas complimentary restaurants will be announced in the near future, so stay tuned.
What Is Available for an Additional Fee on Icon of the Seas?
Now that you know all of the wonderful entertainment, attractions, dining and more that is complimentary on Icon of the Seas, what is not included in your cruise fare? The following restaurants and attractions are open to guests sailing onboard Icon of the Seas, but you'll have to pay an additional fee to access them.
Special Restaurants that are Worth the Extra Cost
The Surfside and Thrill Island neighborhoods are home to some incredible specialty restaurants. At Basecamp, you can refuel between adventures, choosing among a variety of food windows popping out delicious provisions. At Pier 7, you can look forward to plenty of relaxed vibes paired with beachside bites — think mango shrimp tostadas and surf 'n' turf tacos. Though these restaurants are not complimentary offerings, they are absolutely worth a visit, especially if you're one to crave tacos at any moment.
Perfect for birthdays and celebrations, the menu at Desserted is all about extravagant milkshakes piled high with all your favorite toppings. Here, you can enjoy frothy classics inspired by old-school soda parlors or, for adults, boozy concoctions and spirited sweet treats. Located on Deck 16, it's the perfect spot to indulge à la carte. This decadent menu has me convinced to purchase a Specialty Dining Package to enjoy a discounted rate.
Unique Cruise Experience Extras on Icon of the Seas
Aptly named, Icon of the Seas has some iconic offerings onboard. Be sure to check out Swim & Tonic , the largest swim-up bar at sea. Admission is free if you want to hang out and wade in the water, though alcoholic beverages will cost you extra unless you purchase a Specialty Beverage Package . The package is a great deal, and it includes beers, wines, and other vacation libations at bars such as the Lemon Post.
If you're craving some game time, you can hit up the arcade, located in the family-friendly Surfside neighborhood . It's well-stocked with classic games and some cool new favorites that will delight children and adults alike. Play until your heart's content — just keep in mind that games are not included in your cruise fare.
Now that you know everything that's included in your Icon of the Seas cruise, you can start planning an unforgettable escape on the first-ever Icon Class cruise ship.

Iconic Cruise Images, From its Golden Age to Now
Posted: July 5, 2023 | Last updated: July 5, 2023
Sailing through time
1830s: the very beginnings
1840s: the first pleasure cruises
1840s: a landmark in cruise-line history
1850–60s: early developments
Passenger cruising continued to develop through the mid-19th century, with luxuries like on-board lounges and simple entertainment emerging. Shown here, in 1856, is Cunard's RMS Persia, one of the largest ships of her time and an early Blue Riband winner (an award given for high-speed Atlantic crossings).

1890s: “floating palaces”
1900s: entering cruising’s golden age
At the turn of the century, there was still a frisson around cruising and large, buzzy crowds would often gather to see off the ships. This nostalgic photograph was snapped between 1900 and 1915, and shows large steam boats leaving from the White Star Line dock in Detroit, Michigan. Well-dressed passengers fill the ships' upper and lower decks too.

1900s: the first purpose-built cruise ship
1910s: onboard entertainment
1910s: the Titanic disaster
One of the most famous and devastating events in cruise history occurred in this decade. Dubbed "unsinkable" by the White Star Line's vice-president, the Titanic set out from Southampton on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912 to much applause. But just four days later, she collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic: the compartments in her hull filled with water and she tragically sank. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people.

1920s: cruising’s golden age continued
1920s: setting the bar high
1920s: a festive feast
1920s: the first round-the-world cruise
Another major milestone came in the 1920s: the very first round-the-world cruise. The Cunard Line's RMS Laconia (pictured here leaving Liverpool circa 1920) sailed around the globe in 1922, calling at 22 ports along the way, and taking 450 lucky passengers with her.

1930s: all games on deck
1930s: making a splash
1940s: post-war cruising
1950s: the post-war decades
Come the 1950s, cruise ships had another phenomenon to compete with: jet planes. Commercial air travel boomed in this decade, with comfier aircraft and improved routes enticing travelers into the skies. Many cruise liners underwent swish post-war refits in an attempt to stay afloat: this 1950s photo shows the opulent dining room of French liner SS Île de France after a dramatic post-war makeover.
1950s: going Down Under
1950s: the Blue Riband record breaker
Though formalized in the 1930s, the Blue Riband – the award for the passenger cruise liner with the fastest Atlantic-crossing time – has its roots right back in the 19th century. The record is still held by SS United States of United States Lines, which first sped across the Atlantic in 1952. She's pictured here on 9 July 1952, docking in Southampton.
How travel has changed since the 1950s
1960s: the Jet Age
1970s: The Love Boat
As flying became more commonplace, the popularity of cruising looked set to dwindle. However, one particular TV series is often credited with keeping travelers' passion for cruising alive. The Love Boat – aired from the 1970s – was a comedy series that followed the crew and passengers of luxury liner SS Pacific Princess. Such was its popularity, some say it brought cruising back into the mainstream once more. This shot shows Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1975.
1970s: cruising opens up to the masses
1980s: the cruise to nowhere
The 1980s is thought to be the decade that pioneered the "cruise to nowhere", where the ship really was the destination. The SS Norway (pictured) – a lavish mega ship with room for thousands of passengers and amenities like a casino – embarked on a no-docking cruise in this decade.
This is what vacations could look like in 2050
1990s: Disney takes to the water
2000s: making waves in the modern world
The 2000s saw larger-than-life, no-expense-spared, mega cruise ships sail onto the scene. This sunset snap shows Cunard Line's Queen Mary II as she completes her first trans-Atlantic voyage in January 2004. At this time, she was the largest and most expensive cruise ship ever constructed with room for 2,200-plus passengers, a theater and even a planetarium, setting the bar for the ships of posterity.
2010s: bigger, better and healthier
2020s: off to a rocky start
The 2020s got off to an eventful start. The COVID-19 pandemic halted almost all cruises, with some passengers and crew marooned onboard while testing and entry protocols were debated. In 2021 rife cancellations, last-minute border changes and variant outbreaks persisted. However, 2022 (and onwards) has indicated a return to pre-pandemic popularity, with 300 cruise ships departing in April 2022 – pretty impressive compared to just 22 departing in April 2021. Cruise lines have incorporated more health and safety protocols, such as advising passengers to control their TV, light and temperature via an app instead of touchpoints.

Catherine Zeta Jones’ daughter is famous mum’s double in her iconic dress from 25 years ago
Share this with
Catherine Zeta-Jones’ daughter Carys Douglas was the spitting image of her mom as she wore her iconic 1999 dress for her 21st birthday.
The Chicago actress, 54, welcomed Carys in 2003 with her husband Michael Douglas , after having son Dylan Michael Douglas in 2000.
And Carys was her mom’s double during the milestone celebrations as she wore her eye-catching pink slip dress that Catherine wore to the 1999 MTV Movie Awards.
Posing with her hands on her hips, she showed off the pale pink saying dress with multicoloured stone and white lace embellishments in a post on her Instagram page.
‘The most perfect 21st I could ask for! 🌸’ she captioned the post, with Catherine commenting: ‘You deserve it sweetheart ❤️.’
The Mask of Zorro star wished her daughter a happy birthday with a carousel of throwback photos and a touching caption paying tribute to the ‘incredible woman’ she has become.
‘Happy Birthday to my beautiful daughter @carys.douglas You are the joy of my life. 21 years of watching you blossom in to the most incredible woman you are today is a God given gift that I never take for granted and cherish every day of my life. Thank you for being you. I love you with all my heart ♥️ Mama.’ she wrote.
Carys responded: ‘I love you Mama ❤️thank you for everything- I am so proud to be your daughter.’
Basic Instinct star Michael, 79, penned a similarly touching Instagram message to his daughter with a photo where he can be seen gazing lovingly at her.
He wrote: ‘Happy 21 my darling Carys! You bring me and the world such happiness @carys.douglas ❤️ Dad.’
https://www.instagram.com/p/C5-hYEbLyw7/?hl=en&img_index=1
https://www.instagram.com/p/C5-qsZ7OWoG/
And Carys expressed her love for her father too, writing: ‘I love you so much Dadda! Thank you for your being the best dad in the world ❤️
Speaking to The Telegraph , Michael revealed it is ‘joyous’ to have children later in life, but opened up about others mistaking him for Carys’ grandfather .
While visiting his daughter at university, Michael said someone came up to him and said ‘This is not grandfather’s day, this is parents’ day’ to which he responded ‘I am a parent!’
‘We’re empty nesters so we can get around a lot more than we used to raising two children in your fifties, sixties, and into your seventies?’ Michael continued, who also has 45-year-old son Cameron with ex-wife Diandra Luker.
‘I have to thank my kids, Dylan and Carys. They’re just extraordinary beings. I probably certainly have to thank their mum and Catherine. They’ve just been a joy. We’ve had no issues per se. Had a lovely, lovely life together. Dylan is completely out of school now and Carys has got one more year of college.

While most items are investment pieces, you’ll be splurging significantly less right now when you shop designs like the Mini Circle Link Necklace ( $6,000 $4,620) Taylor Swift wore in her “Anti-Hero” video — which is currently a whopping $1,380 off.
Jennifer Meyer Mini Circle Link Necklace
For a (slightly) more budget-friendly buy, it’s your lucky day for shopping meaningful charms like the Mini Clover Necklace ( $300 $231) and Good Luck Necklace ( $3,950 $3,641).
“I get the greatest stories of people who wear that necklace, and all the good things that they feel happened to them while they’re wearing it,” Meyer herself previously told us of the latter pendant, which Swift, Sofia Richie, Reese Witherspoon and Emily Ratajkowski all own.
Jennifer Meyer Good Luck Necklace
Plenty of Meyer’s famous friends also love the designs, including Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston — the latter of whom helped give the brand its big break when she wore a version of the Mini Leaf Necklace ( $350 $270) in her movie “The Breakup.”
Jennifer Meyer Diamond Huggies
Jennifer Meyer Mama Necklace
With Mother’s Day on the way , the site also offers plenty of gift-ready sparkle for less — including over $100 off the Mama Necklace ( $675 $540), delicate Diamond Huggies ( $1,850 $1,425) and Mini Uppercase Letter Necklace ( $350 $270).
Whichever pieces you select, just be sure to shop fast; even the brand’s famous good luck charms can’t ensure deals this good will come around again.
