View your Safari tabs from another Apple device on iPhone

Note: You must be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID on all your devices to manage Safari tabs across your devices.

View tabs that are open on your other Apple devices

To close a tab on another Apple device, touch and hold the link, then choose Close.

How to View Safari Tabs From Another iPhone or iPad

If you have multiple Apple devices, for example, an iPhone and an iPad, there is a high likelihood that you have different apps and activities ongoing with them. However, this does not mean those activities are restricted to the devices they originate from. For example, with the Safari app, Apple has a feature that lets you keep tabs and tab groups updated across devices. That is, if you are using Safari on your iPad and have tabs open, you can also view these Safari tabs on your iPhone.

However, Apple devices users need to satisfy certain conditions: signing in to iCloud with the same Apple ID across devices. Also, you’ll need to enable iCloud tabs on the Safari start page and in iCloud Settings. Here’s how to do so:

How to Sign In With Your Apple ID

To use most Apple services such as the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, etc., Apple users must sign in with their Apple IDs. In most cases, this is usually done during the setup of the Apple device. If you aren’t signed in during set up, here’s how you can sign in from Settings.

Step 1: Launch the Settings app from your iPhone or iPad.

Step 2: Tap Sign in to your iPhone at the top of the page.

Step 3: Enter your Apple ID and password to complete sign-in.

When you scroll to the bottom of the Apple ID page, you can see the option to sign out.

How to Enable iCloud Safari Settings

A second condition that your device needs to meet view your Safari tabs across Apple devices is turning on Safari in your iCloud settings. This ensures your Safari tabs get synced to iCloud, making them easily accessible from any location. Here’s how to do so:

Step 2: Tap your Apple ID at the top of the page.

Step 3: Tap the iCloud option.

Step 4: Under the Apps Using iCloud setting, tap Show All.

Step 5: Scroll down to the Safari option and tap the toggle beside it.

Step 6: Tap Merge when asked what you want to do with your iPhone’s existing local Safari data.

How to Enable iCloud Tabs From the Safari Start Page

With iCloud Tabs turned on in the Safari Settings , your Safari tabs are stored in the cloud. However, to view the open tabs across your iPhone or iPad, you also need to enable iCloud tabs. The option is available on the Safari start page. Here’s how to do so:

Step 1: Tap the Safari app on your iPhone or iPad’s home screen.

Step 2: Scroll to the bottom of the Safari tab and tap Edit to view the Customize Start Page.

Step 3: Tap the toggle beside the iCloud tabs option to enable it.

By tapping the toggle beside the iCloud tabs option, Safari will show open tabs from your other Apple devices.

How to View Open Tabs on Other Apple Devices

With iCloud tabs and iCloud sync enabled on Safari, here’s how to view open tabs across your Apple devices:

Step 2: Tap the tab icon on Safari.

Step 3: Tap the + sign to open the Safari Start Page.

Step 4: Scroll to the bottom of the Safari Start Page, and you’ll need to see the name of your other Apple device.

Step 5: Tap Show All to view all open tabs.

How to Close Open Tabs on Other Apple Devices

Apart from viewing the open tabs across your Apple devices, you can also close them. Here’s how to do so:

Step 6: Touch and hold down the tab to launch a menu.

Step 7: Tap Close from the menu to close the tab.

Clearing Safari Browsing History

With iCloud sync turned on, you can access all your browsing history across all your devices. At the same time, you can clear the browsing history of your individual devices or all your devices simultaneously.

If you routinely switch between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, you might want to move web pages from one device to another. Instead of using the History or Reading List features, try these seamless methods to move Safari tabs between Apple devices.

Handoff is Apple's feature for seamlessly moving a task from one Apple device to another. It works for many apps, including Safari.

First, ensure that Handoff is enabled on your devices. From there, launch the Safari browser and then open the website on the primary device. This can be your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Ensure that your device doesn't go to sleep or else the feature won't be able to hand the tab over to the secondary Apple device.

Now, let's move over to the device where you want to open the Safari tab.

Handoff Tabs to iPhone

If you have a newer iPhone with the Home bar, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold for a second for the App Switcher to appear. If you're using an older iPhone, double-press on the Home button.

At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a "Safari" bar with the device name where the tab is open. Tap on it to instantly open the web page in Safari on your iPhone.

One of the most controversial new features of the new mobile browser version is a tab/address bar now located at the bottom of the screen, which appears when you browse web pages. While the bottom bar is the default layout, the final version of iOS 15 lets you reposition it back to the top of the screen, if you choose. Regardless of where the address bar is located, you will still handle tabs the same way.

Once you get the hang of the tab bar, there’s plenty more you can do with it. First, you can use the tabs icon at the bottom far right to access a tab switcher interface. From there, swiping across the bar between open tabs either to the left or right cycles through your open tabs. A long press on the tab bar brings up an action menu with options like Copy, Paste and Search, Voice Search, and Move to Tab Groups .

Tapping the Share icon gives you the share menu, but directly below it are numerous commands such as Add Bookmark, Add to Favorites, Add to Reading List , and more. The Edit Actions command at the bottom of the page menu lets you rearrange which controls you want to see at the top of the screen for ease of use.

In iOS 15, tabs are easy to find because they appear as vertically scrolling thumbnail previews. Tab groups let you save tabs and organize them according to classifications, topics, and categories to save you the trouble of swiping through many tabs to find a specific site.

After launching mobile Safari, tap on the Tabs icon. Then, tap the tabs arrow in the tab bar to access the menu to creates a new empty tab group, a new group with the tabs you currently have open, or a private tab group. If all your open tabs already are in one category, you can also choose New Tab Group from X Tabs, name the tab group, and click OK . The tab group offers naming suggestions that are fairly sophisticated conceptual interpretations of the tabbed site content. If you have already named a tab group, you will see it listed in this menu and you can tap to switch between it and any other existing tabs. Independent open tabs are listed according to their number. The plus (+) icon in the Tab Switcher Bar opens a new tab. A tap-and-hold brings up your recently closed tabs.

A long press on a tab in the Tab Switcher offers additional commands like Close Other Tabs , Move to Tab Group , Arrange Tabs by Title , and Arrange Tabs by Website . A tab bar at the bottom of the screen lets you access tabs with your thumb. Users can also swipe between tabs, or swipe up for the grid view. Once you see all of your open tabs, choose which one you want to move to another group and long-press until you see a menu appear. On the menu, select Move to Tab Group and tap the group you created.

The new tab interface in Safari for iOS 15 has a slew of options to help you visually connect with websites for work and entertainment. It can get kind of dense, and will take some getting used to. But not only will you have more flexibility, but you can also move the address bar back up to the top if you really don’t like it at the bottom.

Become an expert at Safari for iOS with these 8 tips and tricks

You probably already know how to search the web from Safari’s address bar on your iPhone, or which button enables the handy Reader mode. But for every Safari feature you think you’ve mastered, another is hiding in plain sight.

For example, there’s an easy way to search the current page in Safari, as well as customize how Reader mode looks and feels. You can also nix that listing of frequently visited sites, perform Spotlight searches without leaving Safari, save a page as a PDF, and even close an open Safari tab on another of your iOS devices. Read on for more of our favorite Safari tips.

Hide frequently visited websites

As you’re browsing, Safari for iOS keeps track of the websites you visit the most and puts them in a Frequently Visited panel just beneath your web favorites, which you can access by tapping the address bar.

If you don’t want your “frequently visited” sites appearing below your “favorite” sites in Safari, there’s an easy way to hide them.

The “Frequently visited” section can make for a handy way to jump to favorite sites that you never bothered to manually “star” as a favorite. On the other hand, it also reveals your oft-visited sites to anyone else who happens to use Safari on your iPhone or iPad.

If you’d rather keep your “frequently visited” sites under wraps, try this: tap Settings > Safari , scroll down to the General section, then toggle off the Frequently Visited Sites setting.

Rearrange or delete your favorites

Speaking of your favorite sites, you actually have more control over their appearance in Safari than you might think.

Just tap, hold and drag to rearrange your favorite sites in Safari for iOS, or tap the Delete button to toss a site off your favorites list.

For example, try this: tap the address bar to reveal your favorites, tap and hold one of the site icons, then drag the icon to rearrange it.

You can also un-favorite a site by tapping and holding its icon, then tapping the Delete button that appears. Want to rename an icon? Tap and hold it, then tap Edit.

While you can’t rearrange or edit “frequently visited” sites, you can (assuming you haven’t turned them off entirely) delete them one-by-one by tapping and holding an icon, then tapping Delete.

Change Reader mode font and background color

One of the most handy features in Safari, Reader mode reformats a cluttered webpage to make it easier to read. (By the way: when will Google stop dilly-dallying and fully enable Chrome’s hidden version of Reader mode ?) To activate Reader mode, all you have to do is tap the little four-line button on the left side of the address bar.

You can pick a new font and background color in Safari for iOS’s “Reader” mode.

By default, the background color for Reader is bright white, while the font is the relatively boring sans-serif San Francisco—better than trying to read tiny text on a busy webpage, certainly, but not as soothing as the silky fonts and warm background hues in the iBooks app.

If you look in the top corner of a Reader-enabled page, you’ll see a telltale “aA” button. Tap it, and a menu of alternative fonts and background colors will appear, perfect for switching to a supple serif font with an easy-on-the-eyes cream backdrop.

Search for text on a page

Like Chrome, Safari for iOS makes it easy to search Google (or the search engine of your choice) by tapping your search directly into the address bar.

Don’t see “on this page” search results in Safari for iOS? Keep scrolling.

Confusingly, though, you can also search for text on the current webpage in exactly the same way, but you might not know it unless you scroll down a bit on Safari’s search results.

If you do, you’ll find “On This Page” results at the very bottom of the list, typically hidden by the virtual keyboard.

For a more intuitive way to search a webpage in Safari, tap the “Action” button (the one that looks like a square with an up arrow) at the bottom of the screen, then tap the “Find on Page” button in the bottom row of Action options.

Add a site to your home screen

One of the oldest Safari for iOS features is one that’s easily forgotten: the ability to add a shortcut, complete with its own icon, for any webpage to your home screen.

You can turn any website into a home-screen icon on your iPhone or iPad.

Just visit a website, tap the Action button at the bottom of the screen, then tap the Add to Home Screen button (in the bottom row of buttons). You’ll have a chance to edit the name of your new home screen icon before you tap the “Add” button.

Save a webpage as a PDF in iBooks or Dropbox

One of the best ways to preserve a permanent hard copy of a webpage is to save it as a PDF, and there’s a surprisingly easy way to do it in Safari for iOS.

Turning a webpage into a PDF directly on your iPhone or iPad is easier than you might think.

Just visit any website in Safari, tap the Action button, scroll through the top row of buttons and tap Save PDF to iBooks. Once created, the PDF will open within the iBooks app; from there, tap the Action button again (this time at the top of the screen) to email or print the PDF.

Don’t want to save the PDF to iBooks? If you’ve got Dropbox installed, you’ll find a Save to Dropbox button in the bottom row of Action buttons in Safari; tap it, and Safari will save a PDF of the page in your Dropbox folder.

Close open tabs on other iOS devices

If you tap the Tabs button in Safari for iOS (the two-square button in the bottom corner of the screen) and scroll down, you’ll see a list of the Safari tabs you have open on all your various iCloud-connected devices, such as your Mac desktop system and/or your iPad.

You can close any open Safari tab on any of your iCloud-connected devices with a quick swipe.

What you may not know, though, is that in addition to being able to remotely view your open Safari tabs on other iOS devices, you can remotely close those tabs, too.

Just swipe from right to left on any tab, then tap the red Delete button. Keep in mind that it’ll take a few seconds for a remotely closed tab to actually close.

Do a Spotlight search directly within Safari

If there’s a word, a name, or some other string of text on a webpage that you’d like to dig up some info on, there’s an easy way to do it without ever leaving Safari.

You don’t have to leave Safari to do a universal Spotlight search on a string of text.

Just tap, hold, and drag the selection handles around the words you want to look up, then tap the aptly named “Look Up” button in the black options bubble that appears.

When you do, an overlay window with universal “Spotlight” search results will appear, including hits like word definitions, recent news stories, Wikipedia articles, relevant reviews, and (not surprisingly) matches from the iTunes Store.

How to Sync Safari Tabs Across Multiple iOS Devices

When viewing a website with Safari, the website opens in a window called a tab. Through iCloud, these tabs are available to any device running Safari. You just need to enable the sharing of Safari data in the iCloud Settings.

Enable Safari Tab Sharing

To enable Safari data sharing on an iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and select iCloud.

If iCloud is active, you will see your Apple ID listed in the Account field at the top of the window. If iCloud is not active, you will need to sign in using your Apple ID to sync data with iCloud.

Once iCloud is active, toggle the Safari switch to the ON position to activate Safari data sharing. This will allow tabs to be shared across your devices.

Access Safari Tabs on the iPhone

All the open Safari tabs on your iPhone will appear as stacked windows. Tapping on a tab will open it. If you scroll down through all the tabs, there will be a list of open tabs from your other devices. Tapping a tab from the list will open that tab on your device.

Access Safari Tabs on the iPad

Viewing Safari tabs on the iPad is very similar to the iPhone. The open Safari tabs on your iPad will appear as windows. If you scroll down through all the tabs, there will be a list of open tabs from your other devices. Tapping a window or a tab from the list will open that tab on your iPad.

Everything New in Safari in iOS 16: Shared Tab Groups, Extension Syncing, Web Push Notifications and More

The iOS 16 Safari update builds on the Tab Groups feature introduced in iOS 16, plus it adds some much-needed quality of life improvements and security enhancements.

Tab Group Updates

Introduced in iOS 15, Tab Groups let you organize and save your tabs into different segments that you can swap between. So, for example, if you're planning a trip, you can save all your tabs into a "Trip" group. In iOS 16, Apple takes Tab Groups even further with new features.

Pinned Tabs

Pinned tabs are now available in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, and they can be used in Tab Groups. If you have tabs in your Tab Group that you want to have open all the time, pinning is an option. To pin a tab to a Tab Group in iOS 16, open up the Tab Group then long press on the URL bar in Safari and choose the "Pin Tab" option.

Every Tab Group has its own separate Start Page in iOS 16, so you can have different favorites, frequently visited sites, and other options that are exclusive to each group of tabs.

Any Tab Group you've created can now be shared with friends and family, allowing multiple people to contribute links and work together. Everyone can add tabs and see the Tab Group update instantly.

Passkeys are meant to replace traditional passwords when signing into websites or apps, and Apple is aiming to roll out Passkeys starting in iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura.

Passkeys rely on iCloud Keychain, which in turn requires two-factor authentication for further protection. Passkeys sync across all of a user's devices through ‌iCloud‌ Keychain, which is end-to-end encrypted with its own cryptographic keys.

Passkeys will work on all Apple devices, but Apple is also working with companies like Microsoft and Google to ensure that Passkeys can also be used with non-Apple devices.

Extension Syncing

If you've downloaded an extension on another device, you can see it in the Safari preferences on your ‌iPhone‌ thanks to Extensions syncing, a new iOS 16 feature.

If you don't want to share extensions across devices, you can toggle off the option in the same Settings section.

Web Push Notifications

Website push notifications have been available through Safari on the Mac for some time now, but in iOS 16, these push notifications are also going to be available on the ‌iPhone‌ and iPad .

Support for web push notifications won't be available when iOS 16 launches, with the feature coming in an update later this year.

As on the Mac, web notifications will be available on an opt-in basis, and you will be able to choose websites to receive notifications for.

Website Settings Sync

Your website settings like page zoom, automatic Reader view, and more, will now sync across devices so you only need to set your preferences once. If you don't want to share settings for websites across devices, you can toggle it off in the Safari section of the Settings app.

Strong Password Editing

When you're creating a website account using Safari, Safari will suggest a strong password for you to use, which syncs with ‌iCloud‌ Keychain. Unfortunately, some websites have specific requirements like a certain number of symbols or capital letters that strong passwords don't always fulfill.

Focus Filters

Apple in iOS 16 added a new Focus option called Filters. Filters are designed to allow users to filter out content within apps, displaying a specific Safari Tab Group or Mail account. When you use a Focus with a filter set, the app with the filter will only show what you've selected, hiding everything else.

iOS 16 has a fun feature that lets you drag subjects right out of images, and it works in the Safari app. Open up a webpage with any image, long press on the image, and then choose the "Copy Subject" option.

The update also includes bug fixes and general improvements.

Microsoft Edge on iOS recently received an update that allows it to sync open tabs and history with other devices. This feature has been in testing for some time and is now generally available. The update also adds the option to set Edge as your default browser on iOS 14 .

The option to sync open tabs and history across devices should make a more seamless experience that extends across different form factors.

Here's everything that's new for Edge on iOS, as listed in its changelog:

We've also made some general bug fixes and performance improvements.

Microsoft has been hard at work improving the mobile experience for people who use its Edge browser. Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

Open the Settings app.
Tap on Screen Time .
Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
Tap Content Restrictions .
Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
Click Content Restrictions .
Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.
