âWhy is my iPad so slow?â If your iPad is very slow, it’s a sure sign that something isn’t working the way it should. Unfortunately, there are a lot of “somethings” to consider. Your iPad’s performance issues may be caused by your battery, iOS version, storage, and a host of other factors.
But here’s the silver lining â once you know what caused the slowdown, fixing it is straightforward. In this article, we’ll break down all the possible reasons why your iPad is running slow as well as their exact solutions. Read on!
Table of Contents
Why is My iPad Running Slow?
As we briefly mentioned earlier, there are many possible reasons why your iPad is slow. It’s important to pinpoint the exact cause because each issue has a specific solution. To help you quickly figure out the problem and jump to the correct solution, we prepared a detailed menu:
How to Conduct iPad Performance Test
If you know your way around your device, you can also figure out why your iPad is running slow and freezing by monitoring your deviceâs different components.
In other words, you will want to check out your battery, memory, network, storage, and processor speed, among other things. While you can do it manually by seeking out their respective menus one by one, we suggest using the following apps from the App Store:
- AnTuTu Benchmark. AnTuTu Benchmark is a popular and intelligent app that not only collects your iPadâs performance data, it analyzes it for you as well. It will score your deviceâs performance (against a benchmark), test your iPad storageâs reading and writing speed, measure your network speed, and more.
- System Status Pro: hw monitor. System Status Pro provides in-depth information about your device. It lacks the âscoring systemâ of AnTuTu Benchmark, but you will know everything about your iPadâs battery, disk, network, CPU, and hardware information. It also provides resource graphs that can record your iPadâs memory consumption during up to 3 minutes of background activity. Hereâs the free version .
- Battery Testing. Unlike the other 2 suggestions, the Battery Testing app gives you a ton of data about just your iPad battery. Battery Testing can monitor battery health and track its current raw data (like voltages and charge cycles). It can also monitor your deviceâs runtimes, which tracks how long your iPadâs battery lasts. This is a handy tool to monitor your batteryâs performance over time.
How to Speed Up a Slow iPad
In this section, we provide you with step-by-step instructions for different methods to fix a slow iPad. These methods solve specific problems that may have caused the reduced performance. Itâs important to use the correct method for your deviceâs issues.
Method 1: Force Quit Applications
Even when you exit your apps by returning to the home screen, they are still running to some extent in the background.
To force quit running apps, swipe up from the bottom of your screen and pause for a second until you see snapshots of all previously opened apps. This feature is called the App Switcher.
You can swipe left and right to browse and swipe up to force quit the app.
Method 2: Reboot Your iPad
Some apps continue running in the background even if you force quit them via the App Switcher. Rebooting your iPad will shut down all running processes and clear out its memory.
To reboot your iPad:
Wait for your iPad screen to go completely black. Then, turn it back on by pressing and holding the power button until you see the Apple logo.
Method 3: Turn Off Battery Saving Mode
As we previously mentioned, Battery Saving Mode is a feature on the iPad that limits certain functions to conserve power. This includes reducing the iPadâs CPU clock speed, which saves power but itâs likely why your iPad is slowing down.
To turn off Battery Saving Mode:
Method 4: Update Your Software
Updating your operating system and application software may help speed up your iPad. If the problem is affecting general iPad performance, start by searching for iPadOS updates. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
If the problem seems to affect a specific app or only occurs when that app is running, you should update to the appâs latest version. Go to the App Store and see if there are updates for the app. If an update is available, install it and try using the app again.
If you are still experiencing poor performance after updating your software, wait for about 30 minutes and reboot the iPad. New updates may take a while to fully integrate with the system and may be adjusting to the power demands of the new features. A reboot allows a fresh restart.
Method 5: Check Your Internet Connection
Your iPad may be running slowly due to an unstable or poor Internet connection. This can be caused by a wide variety of problems that you need to address methodically to fix the issue. Try the following steps to verify you have a suitable Internet connection.
- Make sure your router is properly located in range of your iPad and that all cables are connected securely.
- Use a third-party tool such as SpeedTest to test your current network speed.
- Manually reconnect your iPad to the network. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi to see your network connection. If alternate networks are available, you can try connecting to one of them and see if performance is better. You can also use the Forget This Network feature to remove a network and its configuration details from the iPad. This may clear up authentication issues that are slowing down your deviceâs performance.
Method 6: Clean Your iPadâs Caches
Cache data accumulates over time and may even get corrupted. Both issues may impact your iPadâs performance; a full storage will have no room for new cache files, while corrupted cache data can cause your iPad to run slowly or even crash.
Fortunately, we can manually clear cache data ourselves. Below, weâll show you how to clear your browser and app cache data.
To clear Safariâs browser cache on your iPad:
To clear Google Chromeâs browser cache on your iPad:
To clear app caches on your iPad:
Step 1. Open the Settings app.
Step 2. Tap on the app you want to clean.
Step 3. Tap Clear Cache .
Method 7: Remove Big Files
A full storage can no longer accommodate new cache files. We need to make room for the cache data in order to improve device performance. In other words, we need to free more storage and clean up the iPad to run faster.
Consider deleting apps, photos, videos, and other data you donât need anymore. You can also use iCloud to save high-resolution copies of your photos online and keep smaller copies on your iPad.
Method 8: Adjust Your iPad Settings
Your iPad is a very customizable device with many settings that can be tweaked to improve a slow-performing device. Check the following settings
iPads (especially the newer ones) are pretty good at self-maintenance. However, they are still vulnerable to performance issues that can be caused by many different factors. Fortunately, almost all scenarios where the iPad is loading slow have exact solutions that we can do ourselves.
To prevent performance issues in the future, keep your iPadâs iOS updated, take care of your battery , maintain your storage, and use a strong internet connection.

- iOS or app issues â If there are software issues on your device, your iPad Air will try to resolve them as it starts up. Bugs may also be causing problems during the startup process.
How do I clean up my iPad Mini to make it faster?
To clean up your iPad Mini to make it faster, try these tips:
- Delete apps and files that you no longer need.
- Delete glitchy and unstable apps.
- Clear your browser cache (Settings app > Safari) or (Google Chrome app > 3 dots > History).

Why is my iPad Pro taking so long to update?
There are 2 possible reasons why your iPad Pro is taking so long to update:
- Low storage space â Your iPad Pro is struggling to find enough space for the files it needs to install the update. Delete large apps and files you no longer need or upload them to iCloud.
- Poor internet connection â Your iPad Pro needs to download the update package from the internet before installing it. Considering that iOS 16 is around 3-5 GB, you need a fast and stable internet connection.
Why is my iPad charging extremely slow?
Here are possible reasons why your iPad is charging extremely slow:
- Your charging cable or adaptor is damaged, not properly connected, or isnât an original Apple accessory.
- You are charging from a low-power source such as a USB port on a computer or a low-output adapter.
- You are using resource-heavy apps (like video games) while charging your iPad.
- Your iPadâs battery health is low due to damage or natural wear.

5. Turn off background app refresh: Background app refresh allows apps to update themselves in the background, which can drain your battery and slow down your iPad.
Are There Any Hardware Issues That Can Cause A Slow Ipad Mini 2?
Yes, there are a few hardware issues that can potentially cause an iPad to run slowly. Some of the most common ones include:
1. Lack of storage space: If your iPad is running low on storage space, it can slow down significantly. This is because iOS needs space to cache data and temporary files, and if it runs out of space, it wonât be able to function properly.
2. Full memory: Similar to lack of storage space, if your iPadâs memory is maxed out, it can slow down. This is because when memory is full, iOS has to work harder to swap data in and out of memory, which can slow down overall performance.
3. Poor battery health: If your iPadâs battery is old or has deteriorated, it can slow down. This is because a degraded battery may not be able to supply enough power to the iPadâs components, which can cause them to slow down.
4. Malfunctioning hardware: In some cases, a specific hardware component on your iPad may be malfunctioning, which can cause it to slow down. For example, a failing hard drive or a damaged screen can cause performance issues.
If youâre experiencing a slow iPad, you can try to free up storage space by deleting unnecessary files and apps, or upgrading to a larger storage option. You can also try to optimize memory usage by closing background apps and turning off location services for apps that donât need them.
How Can I Improve The Performance Of My Ipad Mini 2?
There are several ways to improve performance on your iPad mini 2. One way is to close background apps. To do this, double-press the Home button and swipe up on each app to close it. Another way is to delete unnecessary files and data. To do this, go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage. Select the app you want to delete data from and tap Delete Documents. You can also clear the cache on your iPad mini 2 by going to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Finally, you can turn off location services for apps that donât need it by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
Are There Any Software Issues That Can Cause A Slow Ipad Mini 2?
Software issues can cause an iPad to run slowly. Here are some of the most common ones:
1. Outdated software: Make sure youâre running the latest version of iOS for your iPad. To check for updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
2. Too many apps: Having too many apps open at once can slow down your iPad. Try closing any apps youâre not using to free up memory.
3. Poorly optimized apps: Some apps may not be optimized to use all of the resources on the iPad, which can cause them to run slowly. Try deleting any apps youâre not using and see if that helps.
4. Too many widgets: Having too many widgets on your home screen can also slow down your iPad. Try removing any widgets youâre not using and see if that helps.
5. Too many notifications: Having too many notifications can also slow down your iPad. Try turning off any notifications youâre not using and see if that helps.
If none of these solutions work, you may need to contact Apple support or take your iPad mini 2 to a professional for further troubleshooting.
The Bottom Line
If youâre experiencing slow performance on your iPad mini 2, there are a few potential causes that you can try to troubleshoot. First, check for updates to your iPad mini 2âs operating system. 1. Has Apple Throttled My iPad?
I don't think you'd be paranoid to wonder if your iPad is slowing down due to throttling. After all, Apple has slowed down processor speeds on older iPhones in the past , so there's a possibility it could be happening to older iPads as well, right? Despite Apple's deliberate slowing of iPhone processing speed to prevent unexpected device shutdown, throttling is most likely not the reason your iPad is lagging. This is because Apple "dynamically manages performance" for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus only. Of course, Apple did hide the truth about throttling older iPhones for far too long, creating a trust gap with customers; but for this issue, I'm going to choose to believe the tech giant learned its lesson and won't make the same mistake again.Â
2. Check Your Internet Connection
If your iPad started slowing down out of the blue or slows down intermittently, you may want to troubleshoot your internet connection. Here are a few things to try:
Connect to a different Wi-Fi signal and see if your problem goes away. If so, your iPad was probably being slowed down by a weak Wi-Fi signal; start by moving your Wi-Fi router closer to where you usually use your iPad; you can also elevate your router to improve its signal, and make sure your router isn't placed close to a microwave, which can interfere with signal strength.Â
If the above steps don't help, try restarting by turning off your iPad, then unplugging your modem and router for at least 30 seconds. Plug your modem and router back in, wait until no new indicator lights are blinking, then turn your iPad back on and see if things have improved.
Do An Internet Speed Test
It's also worthwhile to check on your internet speed; there are lots of different speed tests available online; a favorite of mine is fast.com , which quickly shows you how many Mbps, or megabits per second, you have available for downloads. If you're looking for more information, try Ookla , which lets you know your connection's download and upload speed, as well as Ping (the reaction time of your connection, measured in ms, milliseconds.)Â
If most of what you use your iPad for consists of downloading activities such as streaming movies and videos, you'll probably only need to use fast.com and make sure your internet speed is keeping up with your household's demand. AT&T also has a great Download Speed Calculator you can use to see approximately how much download speed all your various devices and activities require.  Â
If you use your iPad primarily for creating and uploading work such as videos to the internet, or if you frequently make calls using services like Skype, you'll need to make sure your upload speed is up to snuff as well. Here's another great tool that lets you enter all your devices and typical usage, calculates your needed download and upload speed, and refers you to all the area internet service providers that can meet your needs.
If you've restarted your router and made sure it's optimally placed, and have run a speed test that shows your internet service is fast enough to meet the needs of your household, your slow iPad problem is most likely an issue with the device itself. Let's go through the different possible ways things could be going wrong, and how to fix them.Â
3. Update to the Latest iOS or iPadOS
Some folks with older iPads have experienced slowdowns after updating to the newest version of iPadOS, but is this the fault of the operating system? The answer to this question is... kind of. New operating systems are meant to fix glitches, bugs, and security issues, which can make your iPad faster, but they also introduce features that might strain the processing speed of older iPads. It's also an unavoidable fact that as time marches on, some devices are simply left out of iPadOS updates. Clearly, then, advice to update your iPad to the latest OS doesn't work for people whose devices have been left behind by Apple's software developers. However, iPadOS 15 should speed up devices rather than slowing them down like some past updates.

4. Restart Your iPad
If you haven't already done so while checking your internet connection and updating iPadOS, the next thing I'd recommend is to restart your iPad . Restarting your iPad won't delete any of your data or settings; all you're doing is turning off your device, then turning it on again to reboot your iPad. Rebooting clears your RAM (random access memory) and stopping all processes that are currently taking place. If you have too many apps running, music playing, and so on, everything can slow to a crawl if there isn't enough RAM to keep up. To restart:Â
- Press and hold the Top or Side button until you see the slider appear.
- Drag the slider to power off.Â
- Wait a minute or two, then press the Top or Side button again until the Apple logo appears; your device will then restart.Â
5. Memory vs. Storage: Clear Out Storage on iPad
Read this helpful article on the difference between memory and storage ; it explains that the long term space available to store apps, videos, documents, photos, and music on your iPad is what's known as storage and RAM is the space available on your iPad for data currently in use. While RAM and storage are two different things, iPadOS will shuffle data in and out of the empty portion of your long term storage, to help the RAM work as quickly as possible. If your device storage is almost full, then it's much slower to get that data in and out. Something you can do to help iPadOS have less to manage, and therefore speed up your iPad, is to clear items from your storage that you no longer need. The empty space will be used automatically to support your RAM, and make the whole system faster. First, let's learn how to check how much storage you have available.
How to Check Storage on Your iPad
You'll notice in the image above that there's an option called Offload Unused Apps. This is a great feature that saves documents and data while automatically offloading unused apps if storage is low. Unfortunately, this feature appeared for the first time with iOS 11, so if you have an older iPad that can't upload that operating system, you'll need to delete unused apps instead to save storage.
6. How to Delete Apps on iPad That You Donât Use
If your iPad is running slowly, it's probably a RAM issue rather than a storage issue unless you've nearly maxed out the available gigabytes of storage. If your iPad's storage really is nearing maximum capacity, though, it can help to delete apps that you rarely or never use. Here's how to delete apps on your iPad.
- Open the Settings app , tap General , then tap iPad Storage again.
If you have trouble downloading apps on your iPad, read this article on how to download iPad apps correctly .
7. Stop Background App Refresh
While we're speaking of apps, let's talk about another way apps can slow down your iPad. Most of us probably open an app, use it for a bit, open another app, and so on; we may have several apps all open at once at any given time. This isn't a problem in itself, but if Background App Refresh is on, then your iPad is using RAM to refresh every one of your open apps. Here's how to choose whether you'd like to turn Background App Refresh on or off on an app-by-app basis.
8. Move Photos & Videos to Storage
Photos can eat up a sizable chunk of your iPad's storage capacity; if you haven't already, now's the time to offload those pictures. If you have iOS 8 or later, which is compatible with every iPad except the original, you'll be able to use iCloud to save all your photos, so if anything should ever happen to your iPad, they'll be preserved. The problem with this solution is that if you delete photos from your iPad, they'll also be deleted from iCloud! To save your photos while also freeing up storage space on your iPad, your best bet would be uploading them to an external hard drive or computer not connected to your iCloud account, then deleting them from your iPad. Getting on a regular schedule of deleting photos from your iPad will help keep your device running more quickly, as well as making the task less daunting.Â
9. Move Downloaded Music to Storage
Another storage hog that you may want to consider offloading to your external hard drive is any music from iTunes or Apple Music you've downloaded to your iPad. To check how much storage space is being used by your Music app:
- Open the Settings app .
- Tap on General .
- Tap iPad Storage .
You'll see how much storage is being used in the Documents & Data section;Â in my case, it's only 33 KB.Â
10. Cache Cleaner: Delete Your Browser Cache, Cookies & Web History
Whichever your preferred internet browser is, it tracks and stores a lot of information about your internet usage, including recent searches, a history of web pages you've visited, a list of anything you've downloaded, requests from web pages, and much more. While this cache of data can prove convenient and improve load times, it can also eat up storage space. For this example, we'll clear Safari's browser cache, including website data and cookies in this example.
11. Change Your Graphics Settings
Let's get back to RAM for a minute; something you might not realize your iPad is using working memory for are graphics settings. These settings can be changed to save processing power and speed up your iPad; to accomplish this:
- Tap Accessibility .
- Tap Display & Text Size .
- Go back to Accessibility and tap Motion .
12. Turn Off Siri & Search
Something else you can try to free up some processing power is to turn off Siri & Search. Changing this setting will turn off Spotlight and Siri Search, which may prove to be inconvenient. The benefit, though, is that turning these features off will save the processing power it takes to index every item on your iPad. To turn off this feature:
- Tap Siri & Search .
- Here's where this gets a bit time consuming, but then again, having the ability to decide which of your apps you'd like Siri &Search turned on or off for will let you leave your most essential searches on while turning off those you really don't need indexed.
13. How to Factory Reset Your iPad Settings
If none of the previous steps have helped your iPad to speed up, your last-ditch attempt should be a factory reset. Factory resetting your iPad will wipe all your settings while preserving the data and apps you've chosen to keep on your device. Once this is accomplished, you'll need to restore all your settings to the way you prefer them, which may take a bit of time! To restore your iPad to factory settings:
- Tap General .
14. What to Do with an Old iPad:Â Apple Trade-In & Apple Recycle Program
If none of these tips on how to speed up an old iPad have helped, the time has come to consider replacing it. Take the steps needed to take to erase your personal information from your iPad before you sell or recycle it, as well as how to restore your data to your new iPad once you've purchased it. Before you buy an iPad , take some time to consider which iPad data plan is right for you . You can also check out the different iPad generations .
Apple has a program you should definitely check out, called Apple Trade-In . This free trade in and recycling program will give you an Apple Store gift card for the value of your old iPad, and recycle any components that can't be reused.

Basically, iPad running slow results from many factors, here we list the most common reasons why is my iPad so slow:
- Multiple apps are running on iPad at the same time. Generally iOS is powerful to run several apps simultaneously. However when exceeding its internal storage (RAM) ability, iPad will become freezing, or slow to respond.
- Storage is full on your iPad. Many users have the iPad with 16G, or 32G ROM. But with taking more and more photos, recording more and more videos, or saving more and more other data on iPad, the available ROM will be smaller and smaller, or even out. At this time, your iPad will also be running slow.
- A lot of junk files might be stored in your system. When iOS running, or updating, there will produce waste files or data, which will make your iPad freeze up sometimes.
- The apps may be holding high amount of caches and temporary files. When running any app on iPad, waste data will also be generated, normally calling caches. Especially when using Safari on iPad, a lot of cookies and caches will make iPad run slow.

Updating to the latest operating system is not only to speed up a slow iPad but always a good way to get newest features and tweaks on iPad. Make sure you have the most current version for your iPad. Just go to the General > Settings > Software Update, and download the latest iPadOS on iPad.
Notes : iOS 12 is available and it works for iPad mini 2/3/4, iPad 6th generation, iPad Air/Air 2, and iPad Pro. You could try to update your iPad to iOS 12. But iOS 13 is no longer supporting iPad, the newest iPad Operating System is iPadOS 13, which was introduced at the WWDC 2019 with iOS 13.
- iOS 13 is only for iPhones, iOS 13.1 was released for iPod Touch and HomePod.
- To emphasize the different feature set available on the iPad, at WWDC 2019 Apple announced that the variant of iOS that runs on iPad devices would be rebranded as “iPadOS”. And the releases of iPadOS began with 13.1.

3. Clean Up Storage and Delete Junk Files
Thereâs no doubt that most iPad Pro users will use this new generation big-screen Pad to watch videos and play games. With so many media files and apps downloading, even the 64GB/128GB storage of iPad Pro would be run out someday in the future. Of course, at the same time, the junk files, caches and cookies will be created, which may seriously slow down your device. So keeping your device clean and delete these junk files from your iPad seems necessary. Then how to clean your iPad Pro? Below, we offer some methods.
Clean up Safari’s Cache
You can clean up caches/history of Safari and attachments of iMessages/Email to free up your iPad.
Clearing cache is like emptying the trash. The more websites you visit, the more information is stored in your web browserâs folder. When it gets too full, it starts to âoverflowâ, slowing down your device. To clear the cache (using Safari), go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Data.
Remove junk files with PhoneClean help

So you can use the iOS cleaner tool â PhoneClean to get rid of junk files and unnecessary caches on your iPad Pro in 1 click. PhoneClean is a professional iOS optimization and waste files cleaning application, working for iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. 4. Turn off location services
In Settings > Privacy > Location Services, you can turn all location services off or only the specific one. Remember that using the “kill all” switch will also disable the “Find my iPad” service, so we suggest you not to turn off all location services.
5. Perform a Factory Resetting
Is your iPad still slow after completing these steps? It’s time to put it to factory reset. This will swipe everything from your iPad and give you a blank slate. You’ll need to back up your iPad before doing this, and both iTunes and iCloud are good ways to backup your device. Restore your device to factory settings: Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
For many iPad users, applying these 5 methods one by one must be with much time consuming. And every other a period when iPad running slow, taking these operations again, it would be pretty annoying. So we recommend the ultimate tip 6 to fix a running slow iPad, but with less time consuming and automatically.
6. Restart Your iPad
A fully restarting could clean up all temporary processes and make your iPad run faster. And the process to restart your iPad is pretty easy: just hold on Sleep button and slide to power off your iPad. After a while, turn on your iPad by pressing again the Sleep button.
Sometimes when your iPad crashes and freezes, you may need a force restart, hold on both Home and Sleep buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears. Normally, you will find your iPad goes well after a force restarting.

Hello Claturner,
Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like webpages are slow to load the content, so let's check if this related to a specific Wi-Fi network. Try connecting with a different network to see if this continues to occur, and see if it's related to a specific webpage or all webpages. Additional factors that could relate to slower iPad performance are discussed here: About iOS or iPadOS performance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Check your network conditions
Many apps on your device require an internet connection for their content and other functionality. If the network that you're connected to is congestedâfor example, at an event with many people using the same networkâapps might take a while to open or display their content. Your device can also seem slow as it repeatedly reconnects to new cell towers when you're in a moving vehicle.
Even if your device indicates a strong signal, you might need to wait, try again in a different location, or use available Wi-Fi. If you continue to experience issues with cellular data speed, availability, or performance in multiple locations, contact your carrier.
Let us know if this continues with a different Wi-Fi network, and confirm what exactly is affected if we misunderstood you.
Have a great day!

My iPad mini 4 is running sluggish. It lags and responds slowly. Safari freezes, switching between apps is slow. Just loading the settings space calculation takes forever. All app background refresh is off except for necessary apps. It's used 76GB of 128GB, lots of free space left. 166 Apps I've also noticed the battery drains faster than it once did. Did an iOS update last week using iTunes. Still slow. Is it just getting old? Is it the battery slowing it down? It's got the A8 processor, is the A8 really that slow on IOS 13?
Well, the Mini 4 got an update strictly because it has the 2GB ram required by iOS/iPadOS 13. It has a chip that debuted 6 years ago in the iPhone 6 (which is no longer supported, btw), so yes, it might just be getting old. On the other hand, if you noticed the slowdowns in the last couple of months, rather than right after updating to the iPadOS 13, it might be some app you have installed on your iPad. Also, I believe iPads are not affected by the battery-related slowdowns. It's strictly iPhones (correct me if im wrong).
If it is an app, shouldn't the speed issue be mitigated by disabling background app refresh? I have a habbit of closing all my apps frequently. I never use it with apps I don't use open.
macrumors G4
I donât believe in closing apps manually and let iOS manage the RAM as itâs supposed to. The mini 4 is a bit on the older side, so a newer OS might seem more sluggish. You can try to set it up fresh by reinstalling iOS. If you think a single app is dragging your iPad, thatâs fixed by a restart. Best success!

Test your iPadâs performance after you reinstalled iOS with a blank system first - that will give you an idea as to how good the base performance is without your data in place. It might occasionally be nice to just start fresh, even if itâs just to clear out some apps we donât use anymore. But give it a go and see how well the iPad behaves after the restore, fingers crossed!

8 Reasons Why Your iPad Keeps Crashing
If a full charge and deleting apps doesn't help, check for software updates
- Emporia State University
When an iPad crashes, it could be specific apps to blame, or maybe a broader issue with the iPad hardware itself. You can try many fixes that are easy to complete on your own, all of them listed below.
Most iPad troubleshooting guides overlap to some degree, but follow these links if you have any of these more specific issues: How to Fix a Frozen iPad , What to Do When Your iPad Won't Turn On , and How to Fix a Slow iPad .
Why Does My iPad Keep Crashing?
There are several possible reasons why it's shutting down by itself:
- A memory overload or hiccup.
- Low or drained battery.
- iPadOS is outdated and full of bugs.
- A recent OS update is causing adverse effects.
- Too little free storage space.
- The iPad is jailbroken.
- Failing RAM or other hardware.
- The hardware is too outdated to run your apps.
We've seen some users conflate "crash" with "auto-lock." An iPad that appears to "crash" to the lock screen every so often does this keep your data safe and conserve battery. It's a feature kicking in if you haven't used the iPad for a couple of minutes. It's a setting you can customize in iPadOS, and it's most definitely not a bug in need of fixing. Nevertheless, you can delay or disable the auto sleep setting to prevent this.
How Do I Fix My iPad From Crashing?
Some of these solutions resolve particular problems but feel free to step through them to test each fix.
Reboot your iPad to clear out anything in memory that might be causing the crashes. This step is the simplest and tends to fix problems where the cause is unclear.
If a normal reboot isn't enough, try a hard restart .
Plug in the iPad to charge, and leave it there for a few hours. Do this to confirm you're giving the battery plenty of time to juice up, thus isolating low battery as the source of the problem.
If your iPad is acting strange, like if it's slow or apps are closing down unprompted, it could be related to low battery.
Check how much storage you're using , delete unused apps , or temporarily remove apps taking up lots of space. Bouts of crashes could be due to insufficient storage space.
If this is your issue, learn how to save storage on your iPad to prevent this from happening again.
Install any available iPadOS updates . Do this even if the most recent update you installed is the likely cause of the crashes, especially if the update has been out for a long time but you haven't yet applied it.
One reason you shouldn't jailbreak your iPad is that it could make it more vulnerable to crashes. If you have a jailbroken iPad, upgrading should replace the OS with the official version from Apple and likely free it from whatever was causing it to shut down on its own. If this doesn't remove the jailbreak, see Step 6.
It's crucial to update your iPad's operating system whenever possible. New updates often apply bug fixes that could fix the issue.
If specific apps keep crashing, enable automatic app updates to ensure they are always kept fresh with the latest updates from their respective developers.
Downgrade to a previous iPadOS version . If the version you're on now is the latest available, but you still suspect it's the primary cause of the crashes, return your iPad to the previous OS.
It might seem like a useless step to have right after we recommend upgrading the OS. However, testing the latest OS is best before assuming a previous version is better. As long as you've completed the last step and are caught up with all updates available from Apple if you think the software is still to blame, downgrade to the most recent version you know works fine on your iPad.
If completing this step stops your iPad from randomly crashing, stay on top of any news from Apple about an even newer update than the one in Step 4, and apply it when it's available. Chances are, any bugs causing this problem won't last through more than one update cycle.
Completely reset your iPad . Doing this erases everything stored on it, hopefully including whatever is causing it to crash. Although it's an irreversible, drastic step, it's the final step you can take to solve a software-related reason for an iPad that keeps shutting down by itself.
If you can't follow those steps because it shuts down too soon, try resetting the iPad with iTunes .
If you chose to restore from a backup during the reset, and the issue remains, try this step again, but this time set it up as a new iPad as the backup could be corrupt.
Your iPad's hardware might not meet the minimum requirements to run whatever it is you're trying to do. Check the hardware requirements for the apps causing troubleâquit using them or consider upgrading to a newer iPad with better hardware components.
Another sign you might need a more modern iPad is if it's too old to run the latest iPadOS version . An outdated OS, as described above, might be contributing to the crashes.
Make an Apple Genius Bar Appointment if none of the above steps have been helpful. At this stage in the troubleshooting process, the iPad suffers from a hardware problem that Apple can explore further.
What most likely needs to happen is replacing the iPad battery . It's probably the case if it repeatedly dies sooner than the battery level would indicate.
If websites in Safari keep crashing on your iPad, try clearing Safari history and website data. Tap Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data . You should also restart the iPad and see if this clears up the issue. If these options don't work, try disabling the autofill feature: Tap Settings > Safari > Autofill and toggle off Use Contact Info . You can also try disabling Safari iCloud syncing: Tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud and move the Safari slider to off/white.
Roblox may be crashing on your iPad due to technical issues, network issues, or OS issues. To troubleshoot Roblox crashing on your iPad, ensure your Roblox app and iOS version are up to date. Check that your internet connection is stable. Close other applications and check to ensure no applications are running in the background. Check your iPad storage ; if you're running low, the game won't run well. You can also try restarting your iPad and removing and reinstalling the game.
If Facebook keeps crashing on your iPad, a common reason is that your iPadOS needs to be updated. To make sure you have the latest iPadOS version, go to Settings > General > Software Update and see if an update is available. If it is, install it. You should also make sure you're using the most up-to-date version of the Facebook app on your iPad.

How Apple made Safari about 60% faster in the last 6 months
A month ago, we told you about the release of Speedometer 3.0 , a new web performance testing benchmark that aims to provide a more fair and representative measure of how a web browser performs at modern web tasks. Unlike earlier versions of Speedometer, which were made more or less by Apple’s WebKit team, version 3.0 is made in a collaboration between Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla with a new governance model to agree upon what tests are important representations of the modern web.
In other words, it’s probably the most “fair” and up-to-date measurement of web browser performance we have right now.
WebKit is the rendering engine used by Safari and provided to Apple developers who wish to use web rendering within their apps. It’s required to be used by every browser on iOS or iPadOS except for those inside the EU. Apple’s WebKit development team published a blog post detailing how they used Speedometer 3.0 as a guide to optimize performance from Safari 17 (released in September 2023) and Safari 17.4 (released in March 2024).
Over those six months, a lot of small incremental improvements made a big difference. As the blog post summarizes:
With all these optimizations and dozens more, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4. Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time, they all stacked up together to make a big difference. Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 is also ~13% faster than Safari 17.0 on Speedometer 2.1. WebKit blog post
Some of those improvements include things like batching compositing layer updates, increasing cache size on macOS, improving inline and SVG layout, and more. Many of these improvements are minor, resulting in just a few percentage points here or there, or targeting very specific parts of web performance. But multiple small improvements compounding over time made for a much faster browser.
This doesn’t mean Safari is much faster than other Mac browsers, though. When we tested Speedomenter 3.0 last month , we were running Safari 17.4 and found it to be the fastest browser but only by a very small margin. Edge still had some catching up to do, but Chrome and Firefox are both just behind Safari’s Speedometer score.

Browser Companies Criticize Apple's EU Choice Screen in iOS 17.4
Several third-party browser companies have experienced a spike in iPhone installs since Apple made major changes to iOS in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Union, but many are not happy with Apple's implementation of its default browser choice screen.
The change has led to a sharp increase in third-party browser usage, based on several reports. On Wednesday, Reuters reported that users of privacy-first browser Aloha had jumped 250% in March. The jump in users largely came in France, Belgium (3x growth), Germany, The Netherlands, Spain and Sweden (2.5x growth), and Denmark, Italy and Poland (2x growth).
Aloha browser markets itself as a privacy focused alternative to browsers that earns its money through paid subscriptions rather than selling ads by tracking users. The Cyprus-based company says it has 10 million monthly average users.
"Before, EU was our number four market, right now it's number two," Aloha CEO Andrew Frost Moroz said in an interview with Reuters .
Norway's Vivaldi browser, Germany's Ecosia and U.S.-based Brave have all seen user numbers rise following the new regulation. U.S.-based DuckDuckGo, which has about 100 million users, and its more popular rival, Norway-based Opera, have also reported substantial increases.
To be eligible for consideration in the alternative browsers list, companies must have the Default Browser Entitlement that is available to developers. Apple also requires that the app has been downloaded by at least 5,000 iPhone usersâ across all 27 EU countries in the prior calendar year. Apple selects up to 11 of these for the browser choice screen in addition to Safari, updating the list once per calendar year.
Google has also updated its Pixel software to show alternative browser choices, and says that new Android devices made by other companies will also display the choice screen in the coming months.
Despite users increasingly choosing alternative options, browser companies have criticized Apple and Google for the slow rollout of the change, and believe it is hampering the migration away from Safari and Chrome. Mozilla, which owns Firefox, estimates that only around a fifth of iPhone users in the EU have received the iOS update, and claims that the rollout is much slower than Apple's previous software updates.
Some alternative browser makers are also concerned that the design of choice screens is sub-optimal at best. For example, Vivaldi CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner notes that Apple's choice screen only appears when iPhone users open Safari, while the list of browsers provides no additional information.
"The process is just so convoluted that it's easiest for (users) to select Safari or potentially some other known name," he told Reuters .
Vivaldi is also unhappy with the design. "The list of browsers does not show additional information and that does not help users to make a meaningful choice," a company spokesperson told TechCrunch . "If the user has already selected a browser of their own choice, the choice screen can actively try to push them away from it, and may not even include it in the list that it presents to the user."
Ecosia has also been critical, and says Apple's implementation involves an "overly complex installation process" and keeps Safari front and center on the user's iPhone Home screen.
The European Commission is currently investigating Apple's choice screen design for suspected noncompliance. The probe is being conducted in consultation with browser companies, who are likely to encourage regulators to push for a stronger implementation to level the competitive playing field.

Mar 5, 2022. #5. Here we are discussing how slow the Safari jerky scrolling was on a iPad Mini 4 and the OP has been struggling with a iPad Mini 2. Such tolerance compared to what exists now to use. Previously owned Mini 4, Mini 5, now on a Mini 6. iHorseHead.
Oct 25, 2019 9:26 AM in response to TWDI. It's pretty typical that older iOS devices are pretty slow after new major updates. I would wait a few more weeks for a patch to speed things up. If it doesn't come by the end of November, I would consider retiring the Mini 2 for a new model. That's where I am with mine as well.
3. Force Quit Safari and Restart It. On iPhone and iPad with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold. On devices with Home button, quickly double press it. Now, drag the Safari app card up to force close the app. After a moment, relaunch Safari. 4.
Apple doesn't need to fix anything as the rest us are not seeing slowdowns. Try restart gin your iPhone first. Then try deleting cookies, cache, history on Safari. If Safari isn't loading websites or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.
From the Home Screen of iPhone X or later or iPad, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen. On iPhone 8 or earlier, double-click the Home button to show your most recently used apps. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close. Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app.
I still find my mini 2 to be somewhat usable under iOS 12. As for the iPad 4, unfortunately it doesn't support ad blockers since Apple only allowed Safari extensions on 64 bit devices. Those devices have reached / are reaching their end of life, unfortunately. I would try trading up to the 2018 iPad and/or mini 5 if you have the budget.
Solutions: Method 1, Method 2. đȘ« Battery Saving Mode is on. Battery Saving mode is a feature on the iPad that tells the device to reduce its power usage. You may notice lower screen brightness, lack of visual effects, and overall reduced performance (among other optimizations). Solution: Method 3.
Make sure that the Safari app is closed. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Scroll down and tap Safari. Tap the Clear History and Website Data button. Under the Clear Timeframe section, tap All History. Under Additional Options, tap the toggle next to Close All Tabs. Tap the Clear History button. Swipe all the way to the bottom and ...
Here's how to fix it! Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on Safari. Tap on Clear History and Website Data. Tap on Clear History and Data in the resulting pop-up menu. Now relaunch Safari and see if your browsing experience has gotten any better. For some folks, clearing a large browsing history should be enough to speed things up.
Restarting the iPad flushes everything from temporary memory and gives the operating system a clean start. Restarting the iPad won't permanently delete any of your data. Quit the current iPad app. One reason an iPad may slow down is a problem with an app rather than the iPad. Quitting, then reopening the app may fix the problem.
Another reason your iPad Mini 2 might be running slow is because it needs a software update. Software updates can fix bugs and improve the overall speed of your tablet. To check for software updates, open the "Settings" app on your iPad Mini 2, then tap "General" and " Software Update .".
11. Change Your Graphics Settings. Let's get back to RAM for a minute; something you might not realize your iPad is using working memory for are graphics settings. These settings can be changed to save processing power and speed up your iPad; to accomplish this: Open the Settings app.
To do so, please go to "Settings" > "General" > "Reset" > "Erase All Content and Settings" > "Erase iPhone". (Note: After factory reset, all files will be deleted from your device, please make sure to backup your iOS data in case of unexpected data lost.) 7. Completely Clear Safari Caches on iPhone/iPad.
Take good care of your iPad. Close any running apps. Clear out your cache. Check your storage. Stop Background App Refresh on your iPad. Adjust Background App Refresh. Restart your device. Force Restart your iPad. Sometimes, the iPad runs slow after you have updated your iOS.
I have the mini 2, and yes, overall UI is not as smooth as before ever since iOS 10. The way iOS 11 does control center makes things worse since the device has to draw the whole multitasking screen just to access control center, slowing overall UI down. Running individual apps still feel okay though, even games.
Enable Reduce Motion. If you've turned off everything else and want a little bit more speed, turning off some of the visual effects can provide a slight speed boost. Tap Settings > General ...
Connect to a different network. Try to load a website, like www.apple.com, using cellular data. If you don't have cellular data, connect to a different Wi-Fi network, then load the website. If you're using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), check your VPN settings. If you have a VPN turned on, some apps or websites might block content from loading.
In this post, we'll illustrate the real reasons why Safari for iPhone 13/12/11/X/8/7/6/6s/5 or iPad Pro/Air/Mini is running so slow and how to speed it up. Why is the Safari Running Slow on iPhone or iPad? Method 1: Close Tabs in Safari; Method 2: Clear Safari History, Cookies and Data; Method 3: Reset Network Settings
Especially when using Safari on iPad, a lot of cookies and caches will make iPad run slow. Also Read: How to Free up Disk Space on Your iPhone/iPad > Part 2: How to Speed up a Slow iPad. Base on the above information, here we will offer 6 tips to fix a running slow iPad.
It sounds like webpages are slow to load the content, so let's check if this related to a specific Wi-Fi network. Try connecting with a different network to see if this continues to occur, and see if it's related to a specific webpage or all webpages. Additional factors that could relate to slower iPad performance are discussed here: About iOS ...
Aug 2, 2020. #1. My iPad mini 4 is running sluggish. It lags and responds slowly. Safari freezes, switching between apps is slow. Just loading the settings space calculation takes forever. All app background refresh is off except for necessary apps. It's used 76GB of 128GB, lots of free space left. 166 Apps.
Low or drained battery. iPadOS is outdated and full of bugs. A recent OS update is causing adverse effects. Too little free storage space. The iPad is jailbroken. Failing RAM or other hardware. The hardware is too outdated to run your apps. We've seen some users conflate "crash" with "auto-lock." An iPad that appears to "crash" to the lock ...
New iPad Air; iPad mini 7; Next Mac Pro; ... Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 is also ~13% faster than Safari 17.0 on Speedometer 2.1.
Apple's iPhone 16 Plus may come in seven colors that either build upon the existing five colors in the standard iPhone 15 lineup or recast them in a new finish, based on a new rumor out of China.
