The World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Posts within the UN Tourism are filled following a careful competitive selection process that takes into account the candidates’ academic qualifications, international experience and language skills, among others.

Officials on Loan

Junior professional officer (jpo) programme at un tourism, competencies, values, diversity and inclusion.

We endeavor to achieve personal and professional growth for our personnel.

Remuneration : we offer an attractive and competitive remuneration package.

Onboarding : we facilitate your arrival at UN Tourism by offering valuable information on the conditions of service and your arrival at the UN Tourism Secretariat. Newly appointed members of personnel will undergo an induction training to assist them to settle down quickly in the new work environment.

Global health care : we offer a comprehensive medical insurance coverage, covering medical and dental expenditures globally for our staff members and service contract holders.

Holidays : we offer up to 30 days of annual leave per year, giving our personnel the work-life balance that is needed to recharge.

Pension : staff members of the Organization participate in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund while service contract holders are covered by specific provisions for their pension contributions. 

Tax-free salaries in Spain : salaries of staff members are normally exempt from national income taxes in Spain.

UN Tourism is headquarted in one of the major tourism hubs in the world – Madrid, Spain. It is a forward-looking, modern city that embraces innovation and diversity. Moving to a new city, even to a new country, for a new job is exciting but it can also be challenging. As an international organization, UN Tourism is committed to looking after the needs of its personnel, not only in the workplace but also for assisting in the transfer to Madrid. To facilitate their relocation, new personnel will have access to a practical guide which includes basic information about Spain, accommodation, health care, public transportation, social activities, etc.

Interested applicants are requested to follow the specific instructions listed in each vacancy notice or call for expression of interest. 

UN Tourism will only accept applications received through our web-based system. Applications sent by other means (e.g. post, email, etc.) or received after the deadline indicated for each employment opportunities, will not be taken into consideration.

Only candidates short-listed will be contacted . Short-listed candidates may be requested to take a competitive exam and/or competency-based interview as part of the final phase of the selection process.

Please note that receipt of applications will not be acknowledged, and any further correspondence will be initiated by UN Tourism. Roster/open applications are retained by UN Tourism for a maximum period of two years from the date of receipt.

Internship opportunities

Join our team and make a difference.

To be eligible for the UN Tourism Internship Programme, candidates are required to be enrolled in a university programme or have recently completed one. Internship participants do not received a remuneration from UN Tourism but may be eligible for a monthly stipend of EUR 500 to cover transportation expenses. Interns must be in possession of an all-risk insurance, valid for the duration of the internship. When necessary, the Organization may provide visa assistance, however, Interns are responsible for all other aspects related to their stay at the duty station for the duration of their internship.

UN Tourism may at times consider accepting Interns, depending on the student's qualifications and the demands of the work programme of the Organization. As a general rule, roster internship applications are retained by UN Tourism for a maximum period of one year from date of receipt. Candidates wishing to be considered for inclusion in the roster of Interns should complete the application form below. 

UN Tourism will only accept applications received through our web-based system. Applications sent by other means (e.g. post, email, etc.) or received after the deadline indicated for each employment opportunities, will not be taken into consideration. 

Please note that receipt of applications will not be acknowledged, and any further correspondence will be initiated by UN Tourism. 

UN Tourism Member States may send tourism experts and officials through the capacity-building option of the Organization, on a non-reimbursable loan basis, to participate in the activities of the Organization for a set period of time. This arrangement is formally being done through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). 

The UN Tourism JPO Programme is a donor-funded programme that provides young professionals the opportunity to gain professional experience at UN Tourism. The UN Tourism JPO Programme is administered under an agreement established with UNDP in 2016.

A Guide to Jobs & Work Abroad Programs

Work abroad programs are a great way to earn more than just money. The list of advantages is practically endless: broadened horizons, new skills, improved independence, new friendships (and business relations), a new language added to your repertoire, and a boost to take your career dreams to the next level. How to work abroad

So how do you even get a job abroad ? Well, you’ll want to start by finding the destinations where you can legally work abroad and then start your job search. Or, you can find a job that allows you to work abroad, and they will often sponsor your work visa.

You can also get a job overseas with no experience ! In fact, teaching English abroad is the perfect job in that particular scenario. However, if teaching isn’t your true calling, you can either apply for international positions while still at home, or apply for a work visa abroad and figure things out once you arrive.

Here’s how to get a job abroad:

• Choose a destination. Places like Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland grant Working Holiday Visas to citizens of certain countries and who meet an age requirement. If you want to work abroad for a year or permanently, then you’ll want to secure a job offer prior to applying for work visas abroad.
• Choose your field. Sometimes, it’s easier to figure out what kind of job you want prior to choosing the destination. The demand for certain positions is higher in some countries than others, which will make your job search a lot easier (or more challenging).
• Apply to open job opportunities. Once you know where you want to go and what kind of job you want overseas, then it’s time to start applying to work abroad programs! The length of this process will vary depending on your qualifications and prior experience, and perhaps even your proficiency in the local language. 
• Apply for a work visa. Once you find your job, then you can apply for a work visa. Most likely, you’ll need to show proof of a job offer in order to qualify. There should be someone at your new workplace who is in charge of assisting you with planning your trip abroad.

The best types of jobs abroad depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Do you want to only work for room and board? WWOOFING is for you. 1. Flight Attendant

Average Base Salary: $39,077

Qualifications: Applicants are usually required to be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Volatile, costly international visa program strains South Dakota’s tourism industry

Janet Boyer estimates she spent over $40,000 arranging housing for international workers and transporting them to the Black Hills before she opened her doors for the tourist season this year.

Over 70 international workers cover cooking, serving and cleaning between her and her son’s four restaurants at Mt. Rushmore Brewing Co. and the Begging Burro.

The workers are here on visas, which are documents that allow foreigners to be in the United States temporarily. In Boyer’s case, her workers are on the H-2B visa program, which is a seasonal program for non-agriculture workers employed by U.S. businesses that will “ suffer impending irreparable harm ” because they can’t find local workers. Other South Dakota businesses rely on H-2A seasonal visas for agricultural workers; J-1 seasonal visas for college students; and TN professional visas through the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Hiring H-2B workers costs well above  what it would cost to hire U.S. workers , Boyer said. But she doesn’t see another option — with the unemployment rate at a historically low 1.9% in South Dakota and  fewer adults working second jobs , she can’t find local workers.

The H-2B program awarded her 41 international visa workers to meet seasonal demand at the restaurants this summer, and she has 30 other international workers returning from past seasons. That, paired with the 10 high school students she was able to find and hire from the Custer area this summer, isn’t a full staff and will barely cover the tourism season, she said.

She worries she won’t get enough traffic this summer to cover costs incurred from the visa program. She made just enough last year.

“My business is in jeopardy,” she said. “Going along and barely making it doesn’t cover the breakdown of equipment or any remodeling that might need to be done. Barely making it doesn’t let me invest in the company.”

How the system works

The federal government requires H-2B workers be paid wages higher than the minimum wage and the same as American workers, so Boyer pays her visa workers between $12 and $16 an hour depending on the position.

While transportation is required, Boyer voluntarily offers housing for her workers and charges them $10 a day “because there is not housing in South Dakota.”

“We don’t want to gouge these people. They’re up here working their butts off for their families,” Boyer said. “I want their kids to go to good schools and live in safe neighborhoods and have food on their tables. The whole purpose of this program is to help people out — they help us out and make the Black Hills shine.”

The H-2B program, which started in 1987, allows up to 66,000 international worker visas to fill seasonal job needs across the country each fiscal year. Workers can stay in one place for six months before moving to another part of the country to fill peak needs — such as Florida or Arizona during the winter.

Boyer has been using the seasonal visa program for years. She and other South Dakota businesses rely on foreign worker programs, especially for the tourism industry. South Dakota businesses were  awarded just under 2,000 H-2B workers  this year.

But those South Dakota businesses  competed for H-2B slots  ahead of this year’s season — facing off against carnivals, fishing boats in Alaska, bed and breakfasts in Maine, golf courses, landscapers, and seasonal construction needs across the country.

Not every business gets the workers they ask for from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which uses a lottery drawing system to prioritize businesses. That creates a volatile, uncertain and stressful system for owners like Boyer, because they don’t know until a few weeks before the season starts if they have enough workers to fill demand.

Federal solutions sought

Some members of Congress have been pushing for additional H-2B workers for years, including South Dakota  Sens. John Thune  and Mike  Rounds . Rounds most recently  joined a group of senators in early 2022  to call for about 65,000 additional visas, which resulted in the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Labor  issuing a temporary increase  of that amount in late 2022 for the remainder of fiscal year 2023.

Rep. Dusty Johnson, South Dakota’s lone House member, said Congress should make it harder for people to enter the country illegally while acknowledging delays and bureaucracy are keeping H-2B visa workers from filling workforce needs.

He doesn’t see immigration or worker visa reform agreements between parties happening until the executive branch partners with congressional Republicans to secure the border.

“It’s become increasingly unworkable over the last few years and it’s an area ripe for Congress to find some improvements,” Johnson said. “A government process that is this onerous, nonsensical and burdensome doesn’t do anyone any favors.”

Immigration and workforce needs have been a challenge for decades in the United States, said Nathan Sanderson, executive director for the South Dakota Retailers Association. The “political pushing and pulling” trickles down to the visa program and local businesses.

“The number one limiting factor for economic growth in South Dakota is workforce,” Sanderson said. “It’s difficult to put a number on it, but businesses in South Dakota could utilize thousands, tens of thousands of workers if they were available.”

And Sanderson doesn’t see a solution coming from Washington, D.C., soon. While the federal government expanded the number of H-2B workers for this year, “those Band-Aids aren’t very good,” Sanderson said.

“It’s expensive both in dollars and time to try and navigate the various visa programs out there,” Sanderson said. “It’s not ideal. A lot of businesses aren’t able to make it because they don’t have the workers, and that’s absolutely a factor that impacts the economic climate of South Dakota.”

Employers get creative to fill staff

Ramkota Companies, which operates the Custer State Park resorts in the Black Hills along with the Clubhouse Hotel and Suites and Ramkota Hotels across the state, received just over 60% of the H-2B workers the business applied for this year.

Ramkota President and CEO Josh Schmaltz said it’ll be “enough to get by.” Without receiving H-2B workers, the company’s Custer State Park restaurants would have to restrict the number of customers to the amount that the limited staff can handle, he explained.

“Someone might walk into the restaurant and see six empty tables but be told they can’t be seated for another 20 minutes,” Schmaltz said hypothetically. “There’s a lot of planning and strategy you have to take into consideration when you run short staffed while still maintaining a level of service and quality of product our guests deserve.”

Since Ramkota took over as concessionaire at Custer State Park in 2007, the company has always relied in some part on H-2B workers. The first year, the company employed roughly 175 H-2B workers out of an employee pool of 300. 

Over time, Schmaltz was able to lower that number to 60 H-2B workers by hiring more domestic workers. This year, however, Ramkota applied for 80 H2-B workers but only received 50. The company employs another 60 or so international college students through another program and about 150 American workers.

“If we want to operate at normal levels at normal hours and meet the expectations of today’s travelers, we couldn’t do it with American workers,” Schmaltz said. “We absolutely need that H-2B program to fill these seasonal jobs.”

Wall Drug heavily relies on seasonal guest workers because “just getting help in general has been a struggle,” said HR director Anne Jo Spotted Bear. The tourist stop hires as many local employees as possible and fills in the gaps with international workers.

The business uses the J-1 visa program more than H-2B workers. J-1 is an international student program, allowing college students to stay in the United States during their summer break and work a seasonal job. They return to their home country after three or four months of work, Spotted Bear explained, which makes the program more limiting than the six months H-2B workers have. There is no limit for how many J-1 visas can be granted each year.

Spotted Bear estimates about 30% of the Wall Drug staff during the summer months are J-1 workers, about 10% are H-2B workers and the rest are American workers.

Wall Drug was able to help fill its worker needs with H-2B this summer, but the business doesn’t always “win the lottery.”

“It’s a gamble; you might get all your workers, some or none,” Spotted Bear said. “Almost every other year something happens where we don’t get some or we get none. We’ve had two of the last five years where we’ve gotten all the H-2B workers we’ve requested.”

Dubai Floods Expose Weaknesses to a Rapidly Changing Climate

The heavy rains that flooded Dubai last week halted air traffic, damaged buildings and streets — and left climate experts and common citizens asking whether one of the world’s hottest and driest cities should be better prepared for extreme storms.

Weather forecasters knew days in advance that a major storm was heading for the United Arab Emirates and authorities issued warnings asking citizens to stay home. Yet its largest city Dubai was still brought to a halt this week, with one of the worst rain events in decades flooding streets, homes and highways.

Human-caused climate change is making extreme weather events like heat and rain more intense, frequent and harder to predict. The Middle East is forecast to face higher temperatures and a decline in overall rainfall, according to long-term scientific projections. But these very arid places will also experience storms that drop unprecedented rain, according to researchers . That’s forcing governments to consider whether to adapt to rare but destructive events — and how.

Representatives for the UAE government didn’t immediately reply to a written request for comment.

“It’s a real tradeoff in thinking about the cost and the opportunity costs,” said Linda Shi , an assistant professor specializing in urban climate adaptation at Cornell University in the US. “These events are likely to be erratic and unpredictable.”

El Niño, the climate phenomenon that makes seas warmer and alters weather patterns globally, may have affected the storm. Climate change can’t be ruled out as a factor, though more detailed studies are needed to establish its exact influence, several climatologists and forecasters told Bloomberg Green.

“While massive floods like this have occurred in the past, the huge scale and intensity of the rainfall that caused it are exactly what we are seeing more of in our warmer world,” said Hannah Cloke , a professor of hydrology at the University of Reading in the UK. “With so much rain falling all at once, even carefully designed drainage systems will struggle to cope.”

The floods drew immediate attention to the UAE’s cloud-seeding program, which involves injecting particles into clouds that can influence rainfall. But it will take “significant data analysis” to ascertain the role, if any, it played in making the rains more extreme, according to Auroop Ganguly , a civil and environmental engineering professor at Northeastern University in Boston. “Often major floods in a city relate to urban drainage and related infrastructures,” he said.

Dubai and the UAE more broadly were unprepared for such a large amount of water falling over such a short period. Drainage systems quickly proved insufficient to absorb the deluge. Underground garages completely flooded, with water flowing into streets, highways and homes.

Tankers were deployed to pump water from streets once the storm passed, but some communities, lakes and local football grounds remained waterlogged days later. The impacts continue to ripple outward. Shelves in some local supermarkets were still empty on Thursday evening. Schools were shut for four days and government employees were asked to work from home where possible. Dubai’s international airport said Friday afternoon it was allowing departures to operate but it was limiting the number of inbound flights for the next 48 hours.

“Cities in arid regions may be especially ill-prepared for heavy rain events because buildings, landscapes and infrastructure have not been designed with drainage capacity as a primary concern,” said Zachary Lamb , an assistant professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California at Berkeley in the US. “Climate change is unsettling long-held assumptions about landscape and climate conditions that have informed the design and planning of buildings and cities for generations.”

Dubai is not alone in facing that problem. Last year, a superstorm burst dams in Libya, causing floods that wreaked havoc in the city of Derna and killed at least 5,000 people. Parts of Beijing were also submerged last year after the Chinese capital was battered by the heaviest rainfall in 140 years of weather records. The flooding washed away homes and caused dozens of fatalities.

“Dubai can only prepare for what it sees as being within the range of probability for the future,” said Lisa Dale , a climate adaptation specialist at Columbia University in the US. “Predictions for future weather patterns foundationally rely on past weather patterns, leaving many governments unprepared for climate change impacts that are not historically common.”

The federal government has announced Australia’s “largest-ever” tender to build renewable energy projects, which will be underwritten by the commonwealth.

Prime minister Anthony Albanese said it was “extraordinary” that X, formerly known as Twitter, did not comply with orders from the eSafety commissioner to take down footage of the Wakeley church stabbing.

The X boss, Elon Musk , should “front up here to parliament”, Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has declared, calling the billionaire CEO a “tech thug” and “cowboy” after his platform refused to take down the videos.

The shadow foreign minister, Simon Birmingham , said the opposition would support any moves from the government to place penalties on social media companies that won’t remove content deemed damaging to social cohesion.

The Nationals leader, David Littleproud , has denied there is tension in the Coalition around nuclear power, telling Sky News that a “clear majority” of his party want nuclear power.

Global financial uncertainty has prompted the Treasury to downgrade its growth forecasts for major economies ahead of the federal budget.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions has called for the government to issue targeted sanctions on Israel and cease all military trade due with the country due to the war in Gaza. It has also called for a commitment of an additional $100m in humanitarian assistance to Gaza and the West Bank.

An inspection report by the Australian Human Rights Commission has found a high-security immigration detention centre in Western Australia was, in part, “no longer fit for purpose”.

Steve Gollschewski has been named as the new Queensland police commissioner, following the resignation of Katarina Carroll last month.

Erin Patterson , the woman accused of murdering and attempting to murder her relatives by serving them a meal laced with deadly mushrooms, may spend 15 months in custody before she faces a committal hearing, a court has heard.

Murujuga traditional custodians have called for an immediate inquiry to investigate the alleged leak of a confidential report on the Burrup peninsula to the media.

International traffic is now closer to pre-pandemic levels than domestic flights at Sydney airport.

Crocodile euthanised after fatal attack on teenager

Wildlife officers have euthanised a large crocodile believed to have killed a 16-year-old boy in the Torres Strait last week.

The teenager, and a 13-year-old boy, reportedly attempted to swim back to Saibai Island from a broken-down dinghy early on Thursday morning last week, Queensland police said, with the younger boy making it to safety.

Wildlife officers located the four-metre animal responsible during spotlight searches on Friday night near where the boy died and it was killed on Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation.

Moody’s seems in no hurry to downgrade NSW credit rating

As we saw earlier today, NSW treasurer Daniel Mookhey was almost daring credit agencies to cut the state’s credit rating in the wake of what he dubbed a “rip-off” GST carve-up:

So bad was it from the budget outlook, Mookhey said, it was almost certain to cost NSW its remaining AAA rating with two of the big three agencies.

Well, one of the two, Moody’s, had kicked the tyres earlier this month and seems in no hurry to downgrade NSW.

John Manning , vice-president and senior credit officer for Moody’s Ratings, told Guardian Australia:

Moody’s retains its stable outlook on the state of New South Wales’ AAA rating ahead of the release of the state’s fiscal 2025 budget.

So nothing changing just yet. The NSW budget lands in June.

Fitch, the other agency with a top-notch rating for NSW, is yet to get back to us. (S&P cut NSW’s debt rating in 2020.)

The state opposition, meanwhile, aren’t impressed, saying Mookhey was using the GST carve-up complaints to divert attention from the impact on the budget of lifting the cap on public wage increases.

The parliamentary budget office had indicated prior to the 2023 election that Labor was relying on productivity gains to offset higher salaries – something the Coalition says is yet to happen.

Call for second Melbourne injecting room amid synthetic opioid fears

Health experts are warning of the looming threat of strong synthetic opioids called nitazenes among Australian drug users, as former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark said there was an urgent need for a second safe-injecting room in Melbourne .

Referring to the long-mooted facility, Clark, who is chair of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, said:

The bottom line is that people that are using drugs need to be safe. And that’s why a centre is so important … I hope it will go ahead. The first one is clearly highly successful .

Speaking at the World Health Summit regional meeting, Clark said there was a need for drug decriminalisation, public drug-testing facilities and safe-injecting sites to get ahead of what was described as the imminent threat posed by synthetic opioids, which are already causing an epidemic of drug fatalities in North America .

Nitazenes have already been identified in the ACT , New South Wales , Victoria and South Australia . Certain nitazenes can be from 10 to 100 times more potent than fentanyl, which is also a powerful synthetic opioid.

ACTU calls for sanctions on Israel over Gaza war

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has released a new statement on Gaza, calling for the Australian government to, among other things, place sanctions on “Israeli officials who have called for the denial of aid, and military and civil servants denying essential food and materials to civilians in Gaza”.

Speaking for the Australian union movement, the ACTU statement says it is “horrified by the escalating violence and death toll of civilians in Gaza”.

It continues:

The ACTU reiterates its statements and resolution of 19 October 2023 and 23 February 2024 and continues to call for an urgent and permanent ceasefire and the release of hostages and political prisoners.

The union movement has urged the Albanese government to use “all influence, pressure and diplomatic measures to achieve a permanent ceasefire” and the end to all military trade with Israel.

As well as targeted sanctions and the cessation of all military trade, the ACTU has called on the government to commit an additional $100m in humanitarian assistance to Gaza and the West Bank.

The statement says:

The ACTU calls on the Israeli government and the Palestinian leadership to promote open, tolerant and respectful societies through adherence to democratic principles in governance, respect for human rights and equal treatment for all. The ACTU calls for an end to the occupation of Palestine and a just and sustainable peace in accordance with UN security council resolutions. Including the removal of illegal settlements, the withdrawal of Israel from all Palestinian lands along with the dismantling of the separation wall. In line with the ACTU’s commitment to a two-state solution with the security of borders for both nations, we call on all countries to recognise, without delay, Palestine as a sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital. This will confirm the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination in a free and independent Palestine.

Greens press for student loan overhaul

Speaking of student debt, the Greens have renewed their push for sweeping loan reforms that would scrap the process of Hecs/Help rising with inflation.

The prime minister has been dropping his own hints that recommendations to reform student loans in the University Accord are being looked at in the federal budget.

One recommendation is to tie student loans to whatever is smaller out of the wage price index (WPI) and the consumer price index (CPI) rather than setting automatically to CPI. Last year, loans were indexed by 7.1% due to high inflation, with a rise in excess of 4% expected this year.

Another option, put forward by higher education economist Andrew Norton in this masthead , would impose a cap at 3% or 4%.

But the deputy leader of the Greens, senator Mehreen Faruqi , says this isn’t enough.

WPI is usually higher than CPI (including this year, according to the govt’s projections) so this change will make little difference ... a cap of 4% still means at least a $1k hike in the avg. HECS debt and almost $3k for someone with a $70,000 debt. A hike people should not be slugged with in a cost of living crisis.

Labor refused demands from the Greens to protect students from huge debt increases last year, but there's still time to stop the massive indexation hit coming again this June. Man shot by Queensland police near Gladstone dies

A man has died after being shot by police at a rest area south of Gladstone.

Police said the man was shot by an officer on Monday, 20km south of Miriam Vale, around 10.50am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man was assessed in a critical condition but they did not transport him to hospital.

Guardian Australia understands that he died at the scene.

The Bruce Highway at Gindoran, 5km north of John Clifford Way, remains closed.

Guardian Australia is still awaiting further details about the circumstances of the shooting. A police investigation is under way.

Treasurer considers relief for ‘under pressure’ students

We mentioned it briefly earlier but the treasurer, Jim Chalmers , has further hinted that relief may be on the way for students completing mandatory unpaid university placements.

Students in a range of courses including nursing, teaching and social work are required to complete hundreds of hours of internships in order to graduate.

Academics, the Greens and grassroots group Students Against Placement Poverty have lobbied the commonwealth for years to address the burden, pointing to high drop-out rates and burnout .

The University Accord final report, handed down earlier this year, urged the government to front the bill for “care” degrees, and work with industry to implement stipends for remaining mandatory internships.

Speaking to the media today, Chalmers said both loan reform and placements were being looked at in the budget, acknowledging “students are under pressure”.

With the budget a mere three weeks away – watch this space.

Court hears conflicting accounts over Victorian school bus crash

A bus driver says he slowed to a near stop at an intersection west of Melbourne when a truck rammed into the back of his bus, seriously injuring eight students, a court has heard.

But another motorist has disputed Graham Stanley’s claims, telling the Melbourne magistrates court he saw no brake or indicator lights in the lead-up to the May 2023 collision that saw a truck crash into the back of the bus.

At the time, 45 students from the Exford primary school in Eynesbury were on the bus. Eight children suffered life-threatening injuries, with two students needing to have arms and hands amputated. Stanley was also hospitalised with a broken ankle.

The driver of the truck was charged with 11 offences, including four counts of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

He faced the Melbourne magistrates court on Monday for the start of a two-day committal hearing.

Funding boost for warning systems in flood-hit regions

Flood-prone areas across Queensland will receive $7m for early warning infrastructure, AAP reports.

The federal government has announced 170 projects, including new river height gauges, cameras, signage and sensor technology for areas heavily impacted by flooding in 2022.

The emergency management minister, Murray Watt , said that with more frequent and intense flooding in recent years, this infrastructure was crucial.

While we can’t predict the future, we know complacency is simply not an option when it comes to building disaster resilience. With earlier flood warnings and more comprehensive information captured we’ll significantly improve our defence against disaster events.

More than 20 Queensland councils will get $235,000 each for new flood warning infrastructure. An extra $1m will be set aside for “high-priority” projects within nine of these local government areas.

Crocodile believed to be responsible for fatal attack on teen euthanised

A crocodile believed to be responsible for a fatal attack on a 16-year-old boy in the Torres Strait last week has been euthanised.

Last Thursday a search and rescue operation was launched near Saibai Island after reports a 16-year-old was missing. That night a spokesperson confirmed they had discovered his body with injuries consistent with a crocodile attack.

According to a statement from the Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation, the four-metre crocodile was located during night spotlight searches on Friday, near where the teenage boy was killed.

The animal displayed parading behaviour such as raising its head as it swam, which is consistent with it being the target animal.

The crocodile was “humanely euthanised” on Saturday and disposed of at sea, the department said, “in keeping with the wishes of the Saibai Island community”.

The [department] expresses its sincere condolences to the friends, family and community on Saibai Island.

New Zealand PM interested in Taiwan trade, but not travel

In some international news via AAP : the New Zealand prime minister, Christopher Luxon , says he wants to increase trade links with Taiwan, but has ruled out visiting the island nation while leader in deference to the One China policy.

Last week, NZ sent its first-ever official cross-parliamentary delegation to Taiwan. Taiwan is eager to join the 11-nation CPTPP trade bloc ( which includes Australia and NZ) but is considered unlikely to be admitted, given China also wants membership.

NZ does not have an official diplomatic relationship with Taipei, but has a free trade deal signed in 2013.

Luxon said his government has a goal of doubling its export value in the next decade, and plans to lean on Asia heavily to do so. Asked specifically if that included Taiwan, he said: “Yes, we already have a free trade agreement with Taiwan.”

NZ’s openness to Taiwan comes at a moment of geopolitical inflection, with the new right-leaning government exploring closer ties with the US and “traditional” partners.

Each of the countries Luxon visited last week (Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines) have strong relationships with Washington – Thailand and the Philippines were formally allied to the US.

Hilton lifts 2024 profit forecast on international travel demand

HOTEL operator Hilton Worldwide raised its annual adjusted profit forecast on Wednesday (Apr 24), banking on international travel demand to offset normalizing domestic travel in the US

The company forecast 2024 adjusted profit of between US$6.89 and US$7.03 per share, up from the previously forecast US$6.80 to US$6.94 per share.

International travel demand is expected to remain strong this year as global air connectivity increases and travelers flock to Asian and Latin American countries, while demand for domestic travel plateaus in North America.

Hilton, which also owns brands such as Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, reported quarterly revenue per available room (RevPAR) of US$104.16, up 2 per cent from the same period last year. REUTERS
