Ryan reveals Judy Ann’s ‘brilliant’ house rules during lockdown

How TV host Ryan Agoncillo and wife, actress Judy Ann Santos, explained to their children all about the pandemic and the ongoing enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) is a story worth telling.

“We presented it to them like a war scenario,” Ryan told Inquirer Entertainment.

“We told them that we are on isolation so people can’t go to work, and that we have to treat everything we have as if it will eventually run out,” Ryan recalled. The couple has three kids—Yohan, 16; Lucho, 10; and Luna, 4.

“We did it slowly. We tried not to scare them, but we let them understand the significance of what’s happening, so they won’t take things for granted. We had to make them realize that we’re lucky to be in one house, or that we even have a house; that we’re lucky to have supplies coming in,” the TV host said.

Ryan said Judy Ann “did something brilliant” a week after the ECQ was first implemented. He admitted that he wasn’t aware of the effect of his wife’s gesture until a little while later.

He recalled, “It had been a pretty heavy week. Our community had already been on ‘military’ lockdown early on and we’ve been issued quarantine passes ahead of everyone else, so it was already difficult to go out.

“We would eat a set of food for dinner, then eat the same thing the following day. One day, my wife surprised us with food delivery. The meal had been simple—French fries, chicken nuggets and burgers—pero party na! That’s how we introduced the idea to the kids—that from that moment on, we would have to make sacrifices.”

The couple had also set rules on the consumption of electricity.

“You can’t turn on the air conditioner if you’re alone in a room. There has to be at least three members of the family with you before you can use it,” Ryan explained. “As a result, we now all stay together in the living room. We’ve been doing this since Day 1. Now, it’s become a habit.”

When asked about how difficult it was for him to adjust to the isolation, Ryan said being stuck at home was “no big deal” for him, “because we eventually learned to adjust our habits.”

What made him more anxious was thinking about what would eventually happen to their restaurant businesses and to the noontime game show “Eat…Bulaga!” where he is a regular host.

“We were happy to stay indoors. Before the lockdown, we were already on a weeklong break. We had canceled work because we wanted to be safe already,” he recalled.

During the interview, Ryan said he was seated on the couch, “just like I always am when I’m here at home. The only difference is that if you weren’t interviewing me, then I’m either in a video meeting or in an exchange of emails. Isolation is a big deal, yes, but there are much bigger things to consider.”

Ryan then added that he wasn’t so worried about his colleagues in the industry because “I’m seeing a lot of good things happening right now. We see people reaching out to each other—and there’s no longer any distinction between media practitioners, like us, and civilians. Social media has blurred the lines even more,” he observed. “I think we’re all really just coping. There’s a lot of faith being restored on a daily basis on humanity for me.”

These days, Ryan said his concern was geared particularly toward the employees of their Angrydobo Manila branch.

“I keep thinking if they’re all OK, because we were finally allowed to operate recently,” he said. “I would also wake up thinking about what would happen once the lockdown has been lifted, because it’s not necessarily safe out there. There will be new problems for sure. We would just have to roll with the punches and try to be a few steps ahead of our anxiety.” INQ

Judy Ann Santos' cooking show returns after two years

Judy Ann Santos is back in the kitchen to serve some mouth-watering dishes through her online cooking show!

Judy Ann's Kitchen returned with a new episode on April 3 after a two year hiatus that began in January 2022. For her comeback dish, Santos went to her home in Batangas and prepared simple recipes of Uni Pasta and Uni Toast, which she shared were her son Lucho's favorite food.

In the video, the actress took the time to address the long break of her cooking show, "After almost three years of resting, nag-reset muna ako, and now that I'm back, balik na tayo rito sa original kitchen of Judy Ann's Kitchen . May I just say, ang bongga ng teaser, ang bongga bongga ng OBB, pinaghandaan talaga namin talaga 'tong pagbabalik na 'to."

"It took us almost six months of pre-prod para buoin namin 'to. We have new details in the kitchen at saka ang dami naming bagong ipapakita sa inyo. Bago in a way na may mga tips, may mga hacks, may mga surprises along the way," she added.

Santos further talked about her show's return on Instagram, where she expressed her gratitude to her team.

"Hindi ko alam kung paano at saan ako magsisimulang magpasalamat sa mga taong asa likod ng Judy Ann's Kitchen," she began.

"Walang bahid ng banas at pikon sa pagbuo kasi lahat nagtiwala at naniwala na masaya at magaan na pagbabalik ang gusto ko. Maraming salamat sa aking mga kaibigan sa industriya," she continued.

One of the people she thanked was her husband Ryan Agoncillo, who she shared was the one to calm her down in times of stressful situtations while preparing for the comeback.

"Thank you bub for always, always being there, for calming me pag nakikita mong balisa ako, sa paghawak sa kamay ko kapag ninenerbyos ako, sa pagpapaalala sa aking huminga sa mga pagkakataong naooverwhelm ako, sa pag-akap sa akin ng mahigpit sa mga oras na kahit hindi ko alam kailangan ko," Santos wrote.

She also highlighted how her three children Lucho, Yohan, and Luna are her inspiration in life.

In the comments section of her new cooking video, many of her fans showered her with their heartiest congratulations for continuing on with her popular cooking vlog, which has 1.74 million subscribers as of writing.

" Ang comforting to watch you cook Ms. Judy Ann. Years back, every Saturday nakaabang ako sa uploads mo. I'm very happy that you're back!" one user commented.

Another one wrote, "Finally she’s back to serve quality content and delicious food. Definitely my go-to channel here on YouTube."

Judy ann santos on her first day of filming for “the bagman”, the seasoned superstar posted a sneak peek of the 2024 series’ behind-the-scenes, janelle roa cabrera-paraiso.

Following the success of the Filipino-produced series Bagman (2019), ABS-CBN ’s Dreamscape Entertainment  is preparing for a spin-off titled The Bagman  (2024). The show’s cast consists of Arjo Atayde , the lead, who will reprise his role as Benjo Malaya .

Apart from the Cattleya Killer (2023) actor, leading the eight-part edition this 2024 are seasoned showbiz talents John Arcilla  and Judy Ann Santos . 

On her Instagram page, Judy Ann posted some snippets of her first day of filming. “Day 1 as President Isabel . Rolling in 3, 2, 1,” she captioned the video. In the clip, Juday shared behind-the-scenes footage. 

Following her starring stint in Starla (2019), the acclaimed superstar is setting out on another must-not-miss offering. 

“After ‘Starla,’ ito na uli . I am back with ABS-CBN,” she opened with a quick studio tour on set. “ Ganito pala ang pakiramdam ng presidente . May taga-payong ; may mga naka -shades na bodyguard. Ba’t sila naka -shades? Ako , hindi ?” Judy Ann quipped.

The upcoming showcase revolves around the return of Benjo Malaya to the underworld scene of crimes. After his conviction, he is forced to become a fixer for the Philippine president.

Meet Angrydobo, Judy Ann and Ryan's new restaurant

Angrydobo, the new restaurant of host Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos, had to close after barely a week of operations — on its very first weekend, in fact — to "allow the replenishment of our supplies and recharge our cast members," Judy Ann said on Instagram.

The restaurant opened in mid-May to much aplomb, after all. Months leading up to its soft opening, Ryan and Judy Ann had been sharing updates about their new venture on Instagram, happily disclosing the inspiring story behind their eatery.

You know those fights that just go around in circles, where you eventually forget how it started and then just end up being quiet in the car on the drive home? We had lots of those. But, one night in Los Angeles, something magical came out of this particular lovers quarrel. Judy Anne had promised to cook adobo for our Filipino friends in LA. The plan was to make a big batch that they could then just throw in the fridge and reheat at least for the next 2 weeks. So that night, fight or no fight, I was sent out with a list of ingredients. It was close to midnight when I got back. My girlfriend was having a glass of wine in the kitchen. Without uttering a word, I dumped the supplies on the counter, and immediately went to bed. As I got up the next morning, imagine my surprise as I spot Juday still in the kitchen, apparently never having gone to sleep, still working and cooking up a frenzy. The kitchen was hot and heavy with the smell of passion and witchcraft. Something was going on. Soon as I parked my butt on the kitchen stool, the cook wordlessly places a bowl in front of me and goes straight to bed. It was almost noon, but the house was dead quiet and not a soul was in sight. I looked down into the bowl of fluffy white rice, topped with this dark but gleaming adobo still steamy fresh out of the pot. The idea came from a fight almost a decade and a half ago while they were vacationing in Los Angeles, California.

“We were just dating then, we got into this really petty argument that just blew up… But… something magical came out of this particular lovers’ quarrel,” we read the very story etched on the restaurant's wall, right beside the cashier.  

Judy Ann promised to cook a huge batch of adobo for their Filipino friends in L.A. and on the night of their fight, Ryan was sent to buy the ingredients. He dumped everything on the counter and left Judy Ann there. 

The next day, Ryan woke up to Juday still busy working her magic. Without saying a word and perhaps still stewing over their fight from last night, she served him a bowl of steaming rice topped with adobo.

We went to Angrydobo a little over 2:00 p.m. on the Monday Angrydobo resumed operations, thinking the lunch rush had already died down. We were wrong: It was still rush hour. The restaurant was still packed and we had to wait in line before we could get a table. 

When we were given the green light, we made a beeline for the counter to place our order. The menu of the week-old Angrydobo was somewhat light but heavy with expectations — this writer after all happens to enjoy Judy Ann’s cooking videos on her YouTube channel.

Though named after adobo, Angrydobo doesn’t serve adobo as we know it . Instead, it offers meat selection done adobo-style with a rich and piquant soy sauce and vinegar finish.

The signature Angrydobo bowl is the highlight, a deceptively huge bowl of steamed white rice topped with your choice of meat and then paired with a vegetable side dish (Laing with Latik, Sitao Gising-Gising, or Sauteed Kang-kong). The bowl is then topped with pickled onions and crispy garlic for more flavor and texture.

The dessert menu is still unavailable — Angrydobo is still on soft opening, after all.

Fourteen years ago, Ryan thought their “kitchen was hot and heavy with the smell of passion and witchcraft,” and today, it looks like they’re onto something magical.
