Nairobi and the central highlands are hot by day, cool by night, and might receive occasional rain. Mombasa and the coast are very hot by day, rather hot at night, and receive moderate to high rainfall.

Nairobi National Park in Green Season

The Rift Valley and western interior are hot by day, cool at night, and receive moderate rainfall.

  • October is a reasonable time for beach holidays on the Kenyan coast, being relatively cool and not too wet.
  • Game viewing in Kenya on safari at most safari destinations is good in October. The wildebeest migration is usually still found in the Masai Mara, making it a great time to be on safari there.
  • The post-migration calm and pleasant climate make October a good time to visit Kenya for a safari. Wildebeest and zebra can still be seen in their numbers throughout the Mara, offering great photographic safari opportunities .

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

With about half the country on either side of the equator, Kenya ’s climate isn’t a straightforward split of dry and wet seasons. In fact, its dry season has a short wet season, and its wet season is interrupted by a dry one – clear as mud, right?

What this means practically is there’s not exactly a single best time to visit Kenya. There is somewhere ideal to visit at any time of year, but for the Great Migration, bird migration or quality diving, you’ll need to pick specific months.

For climbers, the dry season is prime time for safety and visibility. Temperatures are generally consistent across Kenya, with the coast hotter – but humidity can vary. It can get cold in the mountains, and Kenya’s highest peak, Mt Kenya , is always covered in snow.

This East African nation counts more than 42 Indigenous communities in its population of nearly 54 million people, and many festivals and events explore this diversity – from the Lamu Cultural Festival celebrating the archipelago’s Swahili heritage and the exuberant Mombasa Carnival to the diverse gathering that is the Lake Turkana Festival.

Wildebeests grazing the Savannah during the annual migration in Kenya

July to October and January to February are the best times to see the Great Migration

If the wildebeest migration is on your must-see list, head to the Masai Mara from July onward to observe one of nature’s greatest sights – thousands of wildebeest, zebras and giraffes making the move across the Serengeti.

These high-season months are an enjoyable time to visit any of Kenya’s parks because the grass is thin, there’s little rainfall and sightings are easier as animals congregate around waterholes; they're also climber-friendly because of good visibility and lack of rain. July is also a good time to spot huge flocks of pink flamingos at Lake Nakuru .

Much like July, August is one of the best all-around months to visit Kenya, but it’s a busy time. The Great Migration is well and truly underway, and wildebeest are filling the plains of the Masai Mara. If you’re not in the Mara, August is an excellent time to visit other national parks and conservancies around Kenya .

You can also visit Nairobi without the humid stickiness that makes urban exploring harder work. The capital’s food scene is popping, and Nairobi Restaurant Week is a chance to get your fill. For a hyper-local experience in Samburu County in northern Kenya, the one-day Maralal Camel Derby is a colorful display of camels, costumes and culture.

September offers the best of July and August in terms of weather and wildlife but with slightly fewer crowds, especially in the latter part of the month. You can still catch the migration as hot, dry weather sets in, and there’s almost no chance of rain. It's also when the East African Community Arts Festival JAMAFEST takes place. It’s every two years and rotates between East African nations.

Nairobi hosts the Tusker Safari Sevens in October, an annual Rugby Sevens tournament open to international teams, creating a buzz in the city. October 20 is Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes Day, honoring those involved in Kenya’s independence movement. It’s a public holiday, and Nairobi and coastal areas are buzzing as Kenyans head to the beaches and parks.

Hot and dry, the high season beckons as the new year begins. January is a popular and busy time for everything: safari, hiking, city exploring, diving, snorkeling and beach stays. Dry season is particularly good (and safe) for climbing Mt Kenya and other peaks and for hiking in places such as Hell’s Gate National Park .

You can usually benefit from low season prices at Masai Mara because the big migration is over, and migratory birds fly into the Mara instead. Celebrate the dawn of a new year on a Mombasa beach ; the city hosts major celebrations.

February sees both the high and dry seasons in Kenya. The lack of rain makes it a popular choice for safari, with minimal muddy terrain and plenty of wildlife to see. It’s also a top time for climbing and hiking , although as it's peak season, crowds and prices can both increase.

November, December and March are the best times for lush landscapes and underwater adventures

November is a fun month for festival lovers, with both Mombasa Carnival and Lamu Cultural Festival celebrating the rich heritage of Kenya’s ethnic groups and communities.

Floats, music and dance epitomize Mombasa’s street party while on the archipelago of Lamu off the northern coast, Lamu Cultural Festival includes traditional dancing called ngoma and centuries-old skills such as dhow (sailboat) building, donkey racing, fish-trap making and dhow regattas.

For Kenya’s South Asian population, Diwali/New Year celebrations take place (sometimes in October), so the temples are buzzing, decorations are up and there’s an above-average production of Indian mithai (sweets). Weather is mixed with sun and rain, but November remains a good bet for safari.

If you like your landscapes lush and abundant, December in Kenya is magical. The rains tend to stop around the middle of the month, and Kenya’s parks take on a gorgeous green hue ahead of the upcoming second “high season” of January and February. Water visibility is optimal during the shoulder season too, so this is a great time for divers and snorkelers.

December 12 marks Jamhuri Day. Jamhuri means republic in Swahili, and this day is when Kenya marks its 1963 independence from Britain and its constitution as a republic a year later, with cultural events, dances and music.

The two-day Rusinga Cultural Festival on Lake Victoria celebrates the threatened culture of the Abasuba people, while the Beneath the Baobabs Festival in Kilifi is one of the country’s best music festivals, with East African and international performers, giant art and cool costumes.

It's getting hotter and more humid as the rainy season beckons, but March remains a particularly enjoyable time to be in Kenya. Prices can be in the traveler’s favor , and often the rains arrive later in the month, so you should be fine in the earlier half.

Diving and snorkeling are rewarding in March, with clear water and good visibility, and beach parties are especially welcome on these balmy evenings as the hot, dry season begins to give way to the rains. Muslim Kenyans observe the holy month of Ramadan, while for walkers, climbers and outdoors types, the Mount Kenya Festival is a celebration of the country’s highest peak.

Tea plantations on rolling green hills Kenya

April to June is the best time for smaller crowds and lower prices

The “long rains” hit in April and May, and sometimes in March too. While the rainy season can be off-putting for some travelers, this time of year can be incredibly rewarding, and the Mara remains accessible in March. Crowds thin out, and you can enjoy the quietness and solitude of nature.

Some safari lodges and camps close during this time because constant rain can hamper visibility in some parks, and the humidity can be uncomfortable. It’s still a great time to be by the coast, but heavy rains can reduce visibility for divers and snorkelers.

But don't dismiss May for safari or wildlife viewings! Yes, the grasses are longer, and sightings are trickier, but the light and colors can be extraordinary for photography. Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya is a good choice as wildlife gathers on the riverbanks of the Ewaso Ngiro River.

June is a wonderful time to experience Kenya’s highlands, and with low humidity, walking and climbing become a little easier. This shoulder-season month is a lovely time for wildlife viewing, especially in northern Kenya after the long rains, and it’s also the start of the migration. The coast is mostly dry, and prices are a little lower before the high season kicks off in July.

Parades, singing and dancing take place on Madaraka Day on June 1 – the anniversary of Kenya’s move to self rule. The visually spectacular Lake Turkana Festival in the Rift Valley brings together different ethnic groups in the region, to both celebrate their diverse cultures and promote peace.

If you’re into off-road racing or want to watch, the Rhino Charge , a 4x4 race that raises funds to conserve mountain ecosystems, is quite a spectacle.

The temperatures in Kenya in October are relatively high, with an average high of 28 degrees and an average low of 18 degrees. The amount of average rainfall in Kenya during October varies from region to region. Coastal areas receive less rainfall than other parts of the country, with an average of around 50mm per month. However, some areas in Western parts of Kenya receive higher amounts of rainfall, with an average of around 200mm per month.

Despite the relatively high temperatures during October, the humidity levels are somewhat low, ranging from 50-70%. This makes Kenya in October comfortable, especially in the evenings and mornings. However, due to the tropical climate you should be prepared for occasional showers and thunderstorms.

Festivals and Events in Kenya in October

Lamu yoga festival .

The 9th Lamu Yoga Festival is taking place in Lamu, Kenya from October 25th – 29th 2023. Located on an island on the north coast of Kenya, is it one of the most popular health and wellness destinations in Kenya and for good reason! Days start with morning yoga on the beach, meditation under the moonlight and a beach opening ceremony, Swahili dinner, Dhow sail and final bonfire. If you are in Kenya during the month of October, this is a must do!

Formerly known as Moi Day, Huduma Day is a Kenyan holiday celebrated on October 10th. It marks the coming to power of Kenyan President Daniel Torotich Arap. However, as the county’s constitution continued to be amended, the administration felt it was time to reconsider what Moi Day signified. It was officially restored following a landmark judicial judgement by Kenya’s Supreme Court in 2017 which ruled it should be renamed and given a new significance. The new name is Swahili for ‘service’, reflecting the holidays new spirit.

Mashujaa Day

Mashujaa, Swahili for ‘heroes’, is a national day in Kenya celebrated on October 20th, to honour all those who contributed towards the struggle for Kenya’s independence or positively contributed in the post independence Kenya.  The holiday was once known as Kenyatta Day, named after Jomo Kenyatta, who was first Prime Minister and later President of Kenya.

Best Places to Visit in Kenya in October

If you are visiting Kenya in October, you must visit the Masai Mara National Park to experience the great migration of the wilder beasts and other animals. The great migration is unique to the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, as more than 1.5 million animals make their way from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in search of water and greener pastures. Although the rush of animals will be gone by then, you will still manage to see a few of these incredible animals and it is truly a sight to behold.

A trip to Diani Beach , one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kenya, is a must see. With a coastline of more than 11 miles of rolling white sands and crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. You can spend the day relaxing in the sun or exploring the ocean with snorkelling or get adventurous with kitesurfing and skydiving.

kenya safari october

Of course you cannot visit Kenya without experiencing the ultimate Safari in Tvaso National Park – home to red elephants and large open spaces. A stop on our Adventure Yogi Retreat, Tvaso is located between Nairobi City and Mombasa and is made up of two separate parks, East and West and is one of the world’s largest national parks.

Tvaso East is slightly larger and generally flat with dry planes across the Galana River and is home to the Lugard Falls.

Tvaso West is more mountainous and wet and is home to the black rhino, elephants, Masai lion, hippos and Masai giraffes – a truly incredible experience seeing these animals in their natural habitat.

One of the most beautiful experiences to do in Kenya is to visit the Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre , a perfect day trip to play with mischievous elephants, marvel at the Rothchild’s giraffes and admire stunning beads and jewellery which have been handcrafted by African women.

kenya safari october

If water adventures are your thing then you can visit the Kisite Marine Park and Wasini Island for a private tour including lunch. Swim through crystal clear waters, enjoy a boat cruise for dolphin spotting and explore the culture with an historical tour around Wasini Fishing Village and the Shimoni Slave Caves, where enslaved people were kept before being sent to Arabia.

You are sure to be feeling hungry now so you can spend the evening on an authentic Arabic dhow boat in the Indian Ocean. Indulge in a delicious seafood dinner, relax and stargaze, admire the twinkling lights of Mombasa.

The best time to go on safari in kenya: quick reference.

In my experience, the best times to go on safari in Kenya are the two "shoulder seasons" in June and later in September-October.

June is perhaps my overall favourite month. Everything is green after the rains, it's nice and cool with far fewer tourists than the July peak season, and the first migrant wildebeest might start to arrive from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara .

Likewise, during September-October the crowds are starting to thin out, the migrating herds should hang around until about the middle of the month and there are good opportunities to watch them cross the Mara River. Wildlife viewing in all the other parks is also excellent and on the coast the sea is calm and perfect for snorkelling and diving. Temperatures are idyllic.

On the other hand, the worst month for safari in Kenya is probably April: the height of the wet season, with many camps closed and roads washed away.

Overall best months: June & September-October

High season: July-September & Christmas-February

Low season: March-April & November

Best weather: February & September

Worst weather: April

A Taste of Kenya

19 day small group tour, the best time for safari in kenya, safari in kenya month to month.

January & February

This is a hot and dry period. Animals gather around water holes and river banks which makes for a good period to be on safari. Many migratory birds are present. On Kenya’s coast, water clarity is at its best between January and February. A busy time for tourism, especially the start of January.

The start of the long rainy season and generally a bad time to go on safari. But, with few other visitors and lower prices if the rains are late arriving then this can be a good period.

The height of the wet season. Many safari camps close and roads can be washed away in flash floods. A bad time to be in Kenya.

The first part of May is similar to April, but by the tail end of the month things should be starting to dry out. The landscape will be lovely and green and although the safari camps will be starting to re-open, prices remain low. If you’re lucky with the weather then late May can be a lovely time to visit.

A superb time to be in Kenya. Everything is nice and green, the high season crowds are yet to arrive, the temperatures are pleasantly warm (but note that it can be miserable on the coast) and the wildebeest will be starting to mass on the Kenya-Tanzania border which makes for some exciting river crossing spectacles.

Although best known for the wildebeest migration, June is also the beginning of the humpback whale migration. Head to the Watamu Marine National Park to see whales — and dolphins — on boat tours between June and August.

Generally dry throughout the country with spectacular wildlife viewing in the parks and reserves. Wildebeest flood the plains of the Mara. The coast is now hot and dry. But this is also a busy and expensive time to visit.

August & September

A repeat of July, but by September there is a slight tail off in visitor numbers as school holidays end.

A superb time to visit. The wildebeest should hang around until about the middle of the month and there are good opportunities to watch them cross the Mara River. Wildlife viewing in all the other parks is also excellent and on the coast the sea is calm and perfect for snorkelling and diving. Temperatures are idyllic.

Safari prices start to drop as tourists head home and the short rains fall. Even so, this isn’t a bad time to be in the country as the rains are rarely strong enough to totally disrupt your travels. Migratory birds start to arrive.

The country is nice and green after the short rains and there are birds everywhere. The Christmas period is a busy tourist season but if you can come before that then you’ll benefit from lower prices and a tranquil safari.

Kenya climate by region

There are two things that define Kenyan weather: altitude and the monsoons. With the equator running straight through the middle of Kenya you might expect the country to be relentlessly hot. But it’s not as simple as that. Kenya is rippled in high mountains and plateaus and so altitude plays an immensely important role in Kenyan weather patterns.

In fact, it’s possible to stand in searing 40 degree heat in the northern deserts and snap a photograph of the snow and ice covering the summit of Mt Kenya!

The coastal strip is low-lying and has a hot and humid tropical climate year round (although things do cool down quite considerably between June-August). The vast northern deserts and semi-deserts (where parks such as Samburu are located) are always hot – sometimes too hot for comfort. Rain is also rare throughout the north.

The central and western parts of the country are much cooler, wetter and greener and for this reason this is where the majority of Kenyans live. The climate in Nairobi and other highland areas is one of almost eternal spring, and nights can get quite chilly.

This area is home to the Laikipia area conservancies, the Aberdares National Park and Nairobi National park among others. In the far west of the country, around Lake Victoria, the altitude is a little lower and it can be hot and humid with frequent rainfall.

In between the low and high altitude extremes is the Rift Valley. Fairly low lying and prone to drought, this is where some of the most famous national parks and wildlife conservancies (such as Tsavo and Amboseli) are located. It can be very hot here in the middle of the day but cool enough to need a fleece at night. The Masai Mara National Reserve is a bit higher and wetter and while days in the Mara are often idyllic it can be damn right cold on an early morning safari.

Kenya’s rainfall and monsoons

Aside from temperature the big thing that will impact when you visit Kenya and where you go is the rainfall.

Kenya receives two monsoon rains a year. The long rainy season runs from around March to May and the short rainy season provides the wet stuff between about late-October and mid-December.

During the long rainy season you can expect rain throughout the country on a near daily basis. Rivers can burst their banks and roads can get washed away. Most of the time the rain falls in the afternoon, but it sometimes rains all day. Nairobi can have what feels like endless days of grey, dreary drizzle. Throughout the country, even when it’s not raining it can be very cloudy. In general this is not the best time to visit Kenya.

The short rains are less predictable and may fail to materialise at all. However, as with the long rains, the rain mostly falls in the afternoon and not always everyday. There can be pleasant sunny periods in between the rain showers.

With changing climatic patterns these monsoon periods have become much less defined and in recent years there have been droughts when it should have been raining and floods when it should be bone dry.

Even though it’s not technically a wet season, the period between June and September still sees regular rainfall over large parts of the country, in particular the highland areas, the west and the Masai Mara. Temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold and everything is lovely and green. On top of that this is also when the wildebeest migration rolls through the Masai Mara. Overall this is a great time to go on safari in Kenya.

The driest and hottest time of year is January to March. On the coast and at lower altitudes it can be overwhelmingly hot. At this time of year the vegetation in many areas is dry and sunburnt but it’s a good time to be on safari – especially in a park such as Samburu or Tsavo when animals are drawn to the remaining water sources.

One of the biggest surprises visitors to Kenya get is how chilly it can get on a safari, especially those at higher altitudes such as the Maasai Mara and Laikipia where nighttime temperatures can fall below 10C. Factor in the windchill when zipping along in an open jeep at dawn and the reality is that safari-goers can become quite cold. Pack layers and be prepared.

Green, ‘shoulder’ & peak seasons

When booking a Kenyan safari you’ll likely hear the terms green season, shoulder season and peak season bandied about. But what do they all mean?

Peak season means high tourism season (July-September/October and Christmas to late February). Naturally enough this corresponds with the best times to be in Kenya, but it also means lots of other tourists, booked out lodges and high prices.

Shoulder season (roughly late-May, June and October) is the in-between time of year. For reasons of weather or wildlife sightings, the shoulder season is considered not quite as good as high season but much better than low season. There are fewer tourists and lower prices than in high season. A little secret: the advantages of travelling to Kenya in the shoulder season outweigh the negatives, and this is perhaps the best time to travel here (except for on the coast, which can be unexpectedly cold and wet).

The term ‘green season’ was perhaps coined to make potential visitors think of lush green landscapes. In reality though it means low season and it covers the months of mid-March to early May and November to early December. Kenya will be looking beautifully green at this time, but that’s because it rains – and at times it rains a lot!

Many safari camps are closed and getting around can be hard. This is generally a bad time to visit Kenya. On the plus side there are few other visitors and safari prices are as low as they get. Northern parks such as Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba can actually be quite rewarding at this time.

Kenya generally observes a Christian calendar so major celebrations and holidays such as Christmas and Easter are observed countrywide. Muslim holidays such as Eid ul Fitr will be observed in most coastal and north eastern areas. Only the holy Islamic month of Ramadan will have an effect on your travels — during this time, you might find stores and hotels closed during daylight hours and at sunset for the breaking of the fast.

There are fewer music and cultural festivals than you might expect, but for a chilled out festival, try the Lamu Yoga Festival in February — five days of yoga in stress-free, car-free Shela, Lamu. Various styles of yoga are taught by instructors from all over the world and are combined with celebrations of Swahili culture such as sunset dhow cruises.

The Kenya Music Festival is held over ten days in August in Nairobi. It draws big name African and international acts.

The end of the year brings the Rusinga Cultural Festival — an extravaganza of colour, music, dance and sport to celebrate and preserve the culture of the AbaSuba people of Uganda and Kenya. Held on the last Thursday and Friday before Christmas on the islands of Rusinga, the celebrations address various social and cultural issues. The headlining event is the boat races in wooden canoes where both men and women row along the lake in clouds of song and dance — not to be missed!

When to go FAQs

Your questions, our expert answers, is february a good time to visit the masai mara, or would june-july be better what would be the differences.

February is a very good time for safari in the Masai Mara , but also very different to the experience in June and July.

It's hotter and drier in February and generally there are fewer other tourists. There will still be plenty of zebra and wildebeest around but these are the non-migrating resident herds, so they don't form the massive iconic herds that you might see on TV.

July is good because the migrant wildebeest are all normally in the Mara by then, but its also absolute peak high season so can be busy and expensive. June is perhaps my overall favourite month. Everything is green after the rains and it's nice and cool with far fewer tourists than July, but the first migrant wildebeest might start to arrive (it all depends on rains and the state of the grass).

In short, all three months are excellent but each is different so it might be best to go with whatever just suits your timings better.

I will be in Kenya in early March and am looking for a five day safari for wildlife photography and birdwatching. Where would you recommend for me noting it is the start of the rainy season?

Early March is still a bit early for the rainy season so you might just get the odd thunderstorm. If birds are your real interest and you only have five days then probably the easiest is to go down to the Masai Mara via the Rift Valley lakes of Naivasha and Elementia or Nakuru. This would give you a good range of avian habitats and species in a short space of time. Don't forget as well that Nairobi itself has some excellent birding in the various forests and parklands in and around the city. Plus of course, there's the superb Nairobi National Park where you will see a lot of wildlife and birds.

Best Time To Visit Kenya

Savannah landscape in the National park in Kenya, Africa

Understanding Kenya’s climate

The best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to do. Kenya is divided by the equator and is characterized by a tropical climate.

The weather in Kenya is often ideal, although the coast can be very humid and there are hot, desert-like conditions around Lake Magadi and in the northern areas of the country around Lake Turkana. Most regions in Kenya have temperatures between 71-91°F a day, and they rarely drop below 55°F at night. Even during the short rains, the humidity during the day is mostly low and the sky is clear enough to see the Milky Way at night.

During the coolest months of June, July and August, temperatures in Nairobi are around 60°F, which can drop to about 50°F in the Aberdare region and the Mount Kenya massif.

What to Pack

Safari wear should be comfortable and casual. Evenings and early mornings can be chilly so warm sweaters are recommended. Low heeled comfortable sports or trekking shoes are the most suitable walking shoes, should you intend joining any walking safaris.

We recommend you bring warm clothes, including a fleece or light wool sweater and socks, apart from the normal safari gear. During the day it can get quite hot so don’t forget sunglasses and a high factor sunscreen, as well as a sun hat with a small brim.

Some specialist trips, i.e. mountain climbing, require extra items of clothing and footwear. Many hotels, lodges and camps have swimming pools so you are advised to bring swimsuits.

Due to limited space in the vehicle and light aircraft, we advise you to keep your luggage to the minimum. We suggest you pack your luggage into a small bag of no more than 15 kgs – the luggage limit for local flights issued by the airlines. Almost all safari lodges and camps provide same day laundry service.

Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

Amazing experience!! best tour operator that deserves 10 stars!!Just returned from a 7-Day Tsavo West-Amboseli-Nakuru-Mara-Lodge tour (from Nairobi to Mombasa ) ended at Diani beach and had an incredible holiday and safari! I can't recommend CKC Tours and Travel highly enough. Manager John is very friendly, professional and helpful. I have booked a shared tour but ended up being just me for the last few days. The trip was amazing and very well organised with excellent hotel choices especially the various Sopa Lodges and the Killaguney Serena Lodge with nice rooms and delicious food . I saw the Big 5 and many more wonderful animals . My drivers were amazing at spotting them in the distance! The drivers also were very knowledgable and told me a lot about the animals and their country. The price of the tour is probably the best in Nairobi. Thank you CKC for making my dream come true ! I recently went on an African safari tour and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, I could sense that everything was well organized and the staff were all welcoming and friendly. The tour guide was an exceptional person with vast knowledge of the African wildlife and their habitats. We went on several safaris and each one was more exhilarating than the last. I was awestruck by the beauty of the animals and their natural habitats. It was truly breathtaking to see lions, elephants, giraffes, and other wild creatures in their natural surroundings. The tour guide was excellent at explaining the different species and their behaviors, which made the experience even more enriching. In addition to the safaris, we also went on several other experiences such as hot air balloon rides, village visits, and scenic walks. These activities gave us a chance to explore the local culture and learn about the people and their way of life. It was fascinating to see how different their way of life was from our own and how much we could learn from them. The tour was a great value, as we got to experience so much in a relatively short amount of time. I was amazed at how much was included in the tour and how well everything was organized. The accommodations were top-notch and the food was delicious, which made the whole experience even better. Overall, I had an amazing time on this African safari tour. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure. The combination of amazing wildlife, breathtaking scenery, and fascinating local culture made it a trip of a lifetime. I will always cherish the memories I made on this tour and I can't wait to go back one day!

After seeing the Best Ever Food Tour visit at the Maasai Mara village in Amboseli, I was inspired to go! I contacted Emmanuel and he was instantly a wealth of knowledge. We communicated often about my trip so much that by the time we met, I felt as if I were amongst friends. Along with Emmanuel was Carlos Roy, our driver. Carlos and Emmanuel were incredibly knowledgeable about the Maasai people, the area and could answer all of my questions. Carlos is by far the best driver. He is considerate and has a great sense of humor. You definitely won't be bored as he introduces you to the "African massage"! On the tour, Emmanuel was able to translate my questions, arrange a time for me to personally interview the elder and much more! This tour was hands down one of my favorite experiences during my entire trip. I've been to another Maasai village and this by far was the most authentic. I felt as if I was truly able to experience the culture as well as gain an appreciation for their desire to keep up with today's technology while preserving their traditions and norms. I'm so glad I did this tour with Emmanuel and Carolos. I am a travel advisor and my goal is to send my clients seeking an authentic experience to tour with Emmanuel and Carlos in the future. My one piece of advice would be not to wait, book today because this is a really popular tour!!!

Safari highlights in october.

October is a great month to go on safari. Nature doesn’t follow a script and some highlights will be totally unexpected. However, there are many iconic seasonal events that can be planned for. Read on if you’re looking for some ideas of where to go on safari in October.

Animals Amass in South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, Zambia

If you can handle the heat, October is a fantastic time to explore Zambia’s parks. It is the end of the Dry season and, as the heat soars, animals are desperate for water. You can see huge herds of buffalo and elephants concentrating in South Luangwa NP. Wildlife viewing is equally impressive in Lower Zambezi NP. Canoe trips are especially exciting at this time as you may see thirsty animals approaching the water while navigating hippo pods. The first thunderstorms come as a relief. The soaring temperatures drop, the dust gets washed away and the hazy sky clears.

Start of the Bat Migration in Kasanka, Zambia

Kasanka NP is home to the world’s largest mammal migration, the Kasanka bat migration. Little is known about where the bats come from, but in late October every year, more than 8 million straw-colored bats descend on a patch of swamp forest. The timing corresponds with a variety of trees bearing fruits after the first rains. With a wingspan of about 1m/3ft, the fruit bats are enormous. Watching them leave their roost to fill the sunset sky is a sight to behold, but watching them return at dawn, jostling for space in the trees, is possibly more spectacular.

Unusual Animal Gatherings in Etosha, Namibia

Etosha NP offers a very special wildlife-viewing experience in October. You can witness the much-photographed image of a variety of animals together at a waterhole. It isn’t unusual to see up to 10 species drinking together. Each of the waterholes is unique and has its own vibe. Some are known to be frequented by black rhinos, while others are favored by lions, who come to drink and hunt. If ever there was an opportunity to sit and watch all the action come to you, this is it. You don’t even need a lot of patience to get fantastic photos here.

Perfect Time for a Holiday in South Africa

October is overall a great month for a South African holiday. The country has plenty to offer; great safari parks, beautiful beaches, vibrant cities, fantastic hiking trails and much more. While there is no bad time to go to South Africa, it can be tricky to choose the best time overall. The winter months offer wonderful wildlife viewing, but the cold weather isn’t ideal to really enjoy all the country has to offer. October is the perfect compromise. The shoulder month marks the beginning of summer with lovely weather, but wildlife viewing is still good as animals haven’t dispersed yet.

When to visit Kenya

The best time to visit Kenya is between June and October. Due to Kenya’s equatorial setting, the country enjoys year-round warm weather and relatively low annual rainfall. However, with a range of altitudes and the country’s two rainy seasons, it is possible you will experience some variation depending on when and where you visit. The temperatures vary greatly from Nairobi to Laikipia, and from Nakuru to the coastal regions.

Kenya's best time to see wildlife coincides with the dry months of June through October. During this time, there are fantastic possibilities to see the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeests and zebras travel over the savannah, in national parks like the Maasai Mara and Amboseli. The combination of this show with the open skies and lush surroundings creates an outstanding safari experience. Additionally, viewing the Big Five and a variety of other African species in their natural habitats is perfect during the dry season.

The best time to visit kenya.

January is generally a warm and dry month in Kenya, with hot temperatures and low humidity. The weather is ideal for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing, making it a popular time to visit the country. The average temperature in Kenya during January is around 25°C (77°F), with average highs of 29°C (84°F) and lows of 21°C (70°F). In terms of rainfall, most parts of Kenya experience little to no rain in January, making it a great time to visit for those who want to enjoy the outdoors without being hampered by wet weather. However, some areas along the coast may experience occasional brief showers. January is a great time to go on safari in Kenya, as wildlife is abundant and easily visible in the dry, open plains. It's also a great time to visit Kenya's beaches and coastal areas, as the weather is sunny and warm, and the sea is calm. It's important to note that January is peak tourist season in Kenya, so prices for accommodations and tours may be higher, and popular destinations can be crowded. It's advisable to book in advance to secure preferred accommodations and activities.

June to October in Kenya

This long dry season coincides with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, a great time to visit Kenya.

November to May in Kenya

Known as the low season, this period of rain brings about beautiful green scenery, ideal for wildlife photography. This can be one of our favourite times due to the quieter parks, the green back drop and plentiful game.

Experience Kenyan Culture

There are many cultural events throughout the year that ignite the whole country. Visitors are welcome to join in with festivities but should always observe religious and private gatherings from a respectful distance, unless otherwise invited of course! Of particular note, are the Mombasa Carnival in November and the Ramadan celebrations of May/June.

Experience the Great Migration

The exact timing of this renowned natural event can never be guaranteed, as it is ultimately up to the whims of the wildebeest, but it goes without saying that this is one of the best times to visit Kenya if you are wanting impactful wildlife events! The animals' movements can be estimated to a fair degree of accuracy, however: they can arrive in the Masai Mara as early as July, but as a general rule they can be found in abundance between August and September, beginning their journey back to the Serengeti around October. This is a spectacular event where you can witness river crossings and predator-prey interactions.

Written by dynie sanderson, africa | luxury travel | travel.

An African safari is the dream of a lifetime. Ensure it’s the best experience by reading our guide to planning an African safari.

Planning a 7-day safari in Kenya and choosing a safari outfitter was an exhilarating and meticulous process involving carefully considering various factors. To begin with, we had to decide on the ideal time of year for our adventure, considering the migration patterns of wildlife and the climate.

Planning a Safari In Kenya

After settling on the perfect season, under the guidance of our chosen safari outfitter, Safari Herd Holidays , we had to select the national parks, conservancies, and reserves we were interested in visiting as each offers unique wildlife and landscapes. The types of accommodations we would be staying in and how many days we were comfortable trekking in the wild were also factors.

An African safari is the adventure of a lifetime, promising unforgettable moments in the wild and the chance to witness Africa’s magnificent wildlife. However, a successful safari requires meticulous planning and choosing the right safari outfitter. In this guide, we’ll explore the process of planning an African safari and selecting a safari outfitter, focusing on Kenya, as this was our destination of choice.

What's in This Article:

When to Start Planning

Choosing your safari destination should be at the top of your list in your planning process. The timing of your safari planning is crucial to securing the best options. While there is no fixed rule, planning at least a year in advance is advisable, especially if you intend to travel during the peak season.

Initial Research on Selecting a Safari Destination

Selecting the right safari destination is the first crucial step in planning your African adventure. Africa is a vast continent with numerous countries offering diverse wildlife experiences.

How to Select a Safari Outfitter

Africa boasts 54 countries, but not all are known for their wildlife safaris. These nine countries are renowned as prime safari destinations:

  • South Africa

Among these countries, Kenya, South Africa, and Namibia are often considered the more affordable options for safari enthusiasts.

Conduct Research

Begin by conducting thorough research to understand the different safari destinations and what they offer. Dive into travel books, websites, YouTube videos, and social media to gather information.

Fodor's The Complete Guide to African Safaris: with South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda, and Victoria Falls (Full-color Travel Guide)

Seek Recommendations from Fellow Safari Adventurers

Reach out to friends, colleagues, or fellow travelers who have embarked on similar African safari journeys. Their insights and recommendations on where to go and what to do can be invaluable.

Consider Your Budget

Determine your budget for the entire trip, including flights, accommodations, safari packages, and other expenses. Keep in mind that some countries are more budget-friendly than others.

Choose a Safari Outfitter

Begin to research safari outfitters a year ahead to gain a comprehensive understanding of your options. There are so many safari outfitters that it can be daunting to pick the safari planner for your specific travel desire, dates, and budget.

Your safari planner can take it from there if you have already chosen your safari destination and dates. Or if you are not quite sure of which safari location to choose, your outfitter can also make recommendations. You will find them helpful in guiding you to set up the perfect itinerary. Most safari companies have a wide selection of options for different safaris, styles, and pricing all over Africa. You can go with one of their set safari packages or have them personalize it for you, which is what we ultimately did with Safari Herd Holidays.

These were important steps for us in the process:

  • Conduct Extensive Research . Begin by researching safari companies that operate in your chosen destination for your African adventures. Seek recommendations and read reviews to gauge their reputation and offerings. Look at the various packages the different operators offer, as it will give you a better idea of what they can customize for you.
  • Amenities and Inclusion . Determine the amenities and services included in the safari packages. Most safaris typically include transportation, accommodations, guided tours, game drives, meals, and some beverages. Extras like balloon rides, spa treatments, premium wines and liquors, and tips are usually not covered.

  • Flight Logistics . Consider your flight logistics and how they align with your safari plans. Ensure you have your flights secured before finalizing your safari dates.
  • Customization . Work closely with the safari outfitter to customize your safari experience based on your preferences and budget.
  • Budget Considerations . Establish your budget and choose a safari outfitter that offers a package that aligns with your financial plans.
  • Destination Expertise . Opt for a safari outfitter with extensive knowledge of your chosen destination. They should help you create an itinerary that maximizes your wildlife encounters.

Wildlife Sightings in Kenya Were a Big Part of Our Choice

After extensive research on the numerous safari regions available in Africa, we settled on Kenya as our safari destination. Kenya offers an array of diverse landscapes, incredible wildlife, and convenient access through Nairobi, the capital city. Choosing your destination will also help you to narrow down your options when selecting a safari outfitter. Safari Herd Holidays offers several safari selections in Kenya .

Kenya is the origin of safaris and will likely deliver some of the best African safaris. The standards of service are high and range from lavish luxury, colonial lodges, contemporary boutique hotels, and authentic tented camps. Masai Mara is a top pick as it provides an abundance of wildlife, such as the Mara’s Big Five—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo.

The Masai Mara National Reserve and Samburu National Reserve in Kenya are known for their large populations of big cats, hippos, the rare black rhino, elephants, zebra, giraffes, and spotted hyenas. The abundance of wildlife led us to choose Kenya as our destination.

Locking in Your Destination and Travel Dates

Once you have your destination and your outfitter, it’s time to lock in your travel dates and make final arrangements.

Safari Season Dates

Our first step was to determine the best time to travel. When did we want to travel, and when are the best months to go on safari? What is the high season, and what is the low season in Kenya?

High or Peak Season runs from May to September. The weather is colder and drier during the peak season. You will find the highest rates during that time and must book at least a year in advance.

The Low or Green Season runs from March to June and October to December. During those dates, it will be a bit hotter, and there will usually be more precipitation.

The best time for a safari in Kenya is September to October and late December to February. The best weather is in February and September, while the worst is in April and May. Some lodges close down in high rainfall areas.

Flight Bookings

Book your flights as early as possible to secure the best availability, particularly if you plan to use frequent flyer miles. If you plan to use airline miles, book at least nine months out, as there are limited award travel options, particularly if you want to travel in business class. Check with your safari outfitter, as they may have international travel packages.

Inter-Africa Travel

Also, if you plan on traveling to other countries while you are in Africa, most safari companies offer to set up your inter-Africa air travel for you. As we were also traveling to Victoria Falls and Cape Town, South Africa, our travel coordinator made these flight arrangements for us well in advance to secure our spots.

International Flights into Africa

Once your International flights are confirmed, choose the beginning of your safari dates based on the day of your arrival in Africa. If you travel long distances from the United States, take a day or two to explore Nairobi, Kenya, for example, before commencing your safari sojourn. The days out on safari can be long and grueling, as you may go on several safari treks daily. The last thing you want to do is start your safari adventure exhausted and jet-lagged.

Our Kenya Safari with Safari Herd Holidays

Safari Herd’s flexibility and attention to detail were key factors in our decision-making process. Their safari expert’s communication provided extensive safari particulars and personalized touches and presented an excellent experience.

How to Select a Safari Outfitter

Here are some additional tips to help you choose the right safari outfitter:

  • Compile a List . Begin by compiling a list of potential safari outfitters based on your research, recommendations, and reviews.
  • Read Reviews . Thoroughly read testimonials and reviews from previous clients to gain insights into the outfitter’s performance.

  • Destination Knowledge . Opting for an outfitter with in-depth knowledge of your chosen destination and knowledgeable, experienced guides is essential. They should be well-versed in the region’s wildlife, culture, and unique experiences.
  • Booking Logistics . Evaluate the booking process, including payment terms, cancellation policies, and flexibility in customizing your itinerary.

Preparing to Depart for Your African Safari

Once you have your trip booked, there are several things you need to do before departing on your African safari. Here are the most essential ones:

kenya safari october

7 Day Kenya Itinerary: Luxury Safari & The Big Five

View following a 7 Day Kenya Safari itinerary

Kenya Itinerary: 7 Day Safari Experience

Indulge your adventurous side by embarking on a 7 day safari traversing through Kenya while blending luxury and comfort with raw unscripted wildlife adventures. From walking alongside rhinoceroses, to being hypnotized as you watch thousands of wildebeests and zebras swarm into murky waters to cross the Mara River while threatening crocodiles lurk nearby waiting for the perfect chance to strike. A trip to Kenya on safari during the Great Migration is impossible to forget.

Where to Stay in Amboseli

Where to stay in samburu, where to stay in the maasai mara, where to eat in nairobi, visit a local tribe.

Best Time To Go on a Safari in Kenya

When to Travel to Kenya for a Safari

Wildlife viewings are plentiful year round. Anytime between June and October , which is the dry season, is an excellent time to visit Kenya. Since there’s less rain, this naturally corresponds to there being fewer mosquitoes, and animals are generally easier to spot since they often congregate by water sources.

A visit to Maasai Mara from around August through September gives you the chance to witness perhaps the most incredible wildlife spectacle in the world, when the migratory animals cross the Mara River. The wildebeest migration consists of an estimated 1.5 million wildebeests, accompanied by ~250,000 zebras, and antelope species often reach Maasai Mara around August and they generally start returning back to the Serengeti as the rains begin again. While the migratory pattern is fairly predictable, the exact timing can never be guaranteed as the animals are moving in search of better grass.

Winetraveler Tip: If you’re scheduling your trip around the Great Migration and you have an extra week, I recommend spending a week in Tanzania first and then pick up this itinerary that saves the Mara River crossings as the grand finale. Follow along with our suggested 7 day Tanzania safari itinerary .

Select a Tour Operator

There are many tour operators to choose from at a wide range of price points to guide you on a Kenya Safari. Selecting a reputable company with experienced guides will maximize your safari experience. We booked our trip with Odyssey Safaris . You’ll get to see the “Big Five” game animals: lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. The trip is completely customizable and they’ll walk you through every step of the planning process and offer recommendations based on your personal travel preferences and budget.

Every detail about our trip with Odyssey was flawless, luxurious, adventure-packed, and exceeded all expectations. Without the expertise of our guides, we would have easily driven by many lions and a few cheetahs without ever realizing they were there. The tawny colored fur of lions and the spotted fur of leopards and cheetahs blends right into the tall blades of the beige dry grass. The guides communicated with each other throughout the park about the whereabouts of any highly sought after sightings and brought us close to any within reach.

Traveling to and Around Kenya

If you started in Tanzania, you can cross the Namanga border post, clear Immigration formalities and start your journey to Amboseli, Kenya . Alternatively, you can fly into Nairobi and then transfer to Amboseli. You can search for deals on flights here .

The day-to-day driving is in safari vehicles by experienced guides. To avoid very lengthy car drives, this itinerary suggests taking a few single-engine charter planes departing and landing at small airstrips. You can search for these flights with Safari Link .

7 Days on Safari in Kenya

First stop: amboseli (1 night).

Amboseli National Park is well-known for its large elephant population of about 1,200, and viewing immense wildlife while the magnificent towering Mount Kilimanjaro rises in the backdrop. This park, which has been recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO , is located in southern Kenya on the border of Tanzania. Herds of elephants with white ivory tusks cool off in the swampy waters mostly submerged, baby elephants nurse and walk alongside their mothers, and you may witness two male elephants aggressively fight to establish dominance.

Baby Hyena in Kenya during a safari trip

Hyena clans lay sprawled out along the dry earth while little babies scurry in and out of shaded holes and nestle into their mother’s tummies. I never realized how adorable baby hyenas were and how much they resembled puppies.

Elephants in Amboseli Kenya

Other common wildlife encounters include zebras, wildebeests, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, gazelles, some lions, and occasional cheetahs. We only came across a few lions in Amboseli, no cheetahs, and we were told leopards are rarely seen.

The luxurious Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge is nestled into the grasslands of the national park. The rooms are comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. From the spacious outdoor terrace, which is a great place to toast a wonderful day of safari adventures, you may see zebras, elephants, impalas, and gazelles scattered over the expansive savanna plains. Vervet monkeys, which are cute little monkeys with black faces and grayish colored fur, may accompany you.

You can arrange a Champagne toast on top of Observation Hill with tasty appetizers before returning back to the lodge for a bush dining experience among the murmurs of wildlife. Observation Hill, a large hill overlooking the park, boasts having fantastic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, especially at sunset.

Winetraveler Tip: Travelers desiring to splurge on ultra-luxurious accommodation, check out Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli .

Second Stop: Samburu (2 nights)

From Amboseli, fly to Samburu via a layover in Nairobi.

What makes the reddish colored desert frontier of Samburu National Reserve  special is that it is the home to animals not found in many other parks. Patches of green shrubbery dot the semi-arid savanna while Ololokwe Mountain stands proud in the backdrop. Enormous masterful termite mounds, many appearing to be at least 12 feet tall, are common, and occasionally bare trees grow out of them. Fierce crocodiles patrol the brown waters of the Ewaso Ngiro River that also provides escape to the wildlife from the equatorial sun.

Girafe in Samburu

The patterns on the zebras and giraffes in Samburu are remarkably different than those we saw elsewhere throughout Tanzania and Kenya. Grevy’s zebras, the largest species of zebras, have a white underbelly and distinctively narrower stripes in comparison to the plains zebras. The spots on reticulated giraffes, living in Samburu, are cleaner and more defined than the other giraffes we had seen. The long-necked gerenuk is an antelope with an elongated neck that stands erect on its hind legs to feed on the leaves of high tree branches. We came across our first oryxes, which are large grayish colored antelope with long straight horns that have an incredible ability to survive long periods of time without water.

Elephants and hippos are also common in Samburu. The big cats are not known to be commonly seen. We did, however, see a pride of lions basking in the sun, and we spotted a couple of cheetahs from afar while sitting on our balcony at our lodge.

Samburu Simba Lodge reminded me of a luxurious 2-story town home community in the States. Right from our spacious private balcony that extended out in a triangular form overlooking the vast game reserve, we watched zebras and elephants roaming the expansive lands while sipping on wine.

Another lovely hotel option is Samburu Intrepids Luxury Tented Camp .

Third Stop: Mount Kenya (1 night)

Samburu to Mount Kenya is about a 2 hour and 15 minute drive.

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club is a slice of paradise set on the equator offering spectacular views of Africa’s second highest mountain, Mount Kenya reaching over 17,000 ft. high. The club’s founder was movie star William Holden, and its most famous former member is Winston Churchill. The luxury hotel is spread out over 100 acres and features meticulously manicured and velvety green lawns, a 9-hole golf course, a large pool, entrancing gardens, a hedge maze reminding me of Alice in Wonderland, ponds, and a nearby animal orphanage. Horseback riding, fishing, nature walks, and tranquil spa treatments are also available.

Bonding with baby buffalo at animal orphanage at Mt Kenya

The Animal Orphanage , located in the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, is only a short walk from the main hotel. Most of the animals roamed freely around the grounds. The orphanage was the home to many animals including cheetahs, a bongo, ostriches, giant tortoises, buffaloes, all kinds of fun monkeys, and small hippos. The monkeys jumped and crawled all over us while we fed them. We hand fed the ostriches and the small hippos. One of my highlights of the trip was when I bonded with the baby buffalo that took a fancy to me and followed my every step around the property.

Fourth Stop: Maasai Mara (2 nights)

Transfer to the Nanyuki airstrip and fly to the Ngerende Airstrip. From there, you will be only about 10 minutes to the Fairmont Mara Safari Club .

Nowhere else we had traveled (including our 7 prior days in Tanzania) compared in terms of the amount, variety, and density of wildlife we observed in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It lies in the Great Rift Valley and is the most prolific game reserve in Kenya and the host of the Great Migration. Every year, millions of migratory terrestrial animals cross the crocodile and hippopotamus infested waters.

Zebras in Masai Mara

The natural beauty of Maasai Mara is immense and the herds of animals appear endless. The timing of our trip put us there at the perfect time to join the herds of wildebeests. For long stretches, countless wildebeests appeared in every direction all around us as far as the eye could see across the vast plains until they appeared to be no larger than black ants. Elephants, giraffes, buffalos, lions, cheetahs, warthogs, gazelles, impalas, topis, and hyenas are common. Some are lucky enough to see a leopard. Black rhinos are rare.

Cheetahs in Maasai Mara

Mara River Crossing

At the crocodile and hippo infested waters of the Mara River, swarms of wildebeests and zebras attempt a crossing. Long, wide, and thick crocodiles lurk in the distance waiting and plotting their ambush. Zebras take turns standing watch to warn fellow zebras and the masses of wildebeests when the crocodiles are getting dangerously close. Most traveled safely across the river. Many did not. We watched as a crocodile did the death roll with a zebra.

Mara River Crossing during Kenya Safari

For as scary as the crocodiles were, the territorial hippos commanded the waters. Anytime the crocodiles got too close to a huddle of hippos, a large male hippo would swim toward the crocodile warning them to back off. The crocodiles always listened.

We watched the scenes unfold at the Mara River crossing for hours and I could have stayed for hours longer.

Winetraveler Tip: This is a trip worth investing in a better camera or renting one. If I have the chance to bring my children back here to witness this phenomenon, I would rent a camera with a 600 mm lens .

Walk with Rhinos

Walk with two southern white rhinoceroses named Koffi Anan and Queen Elizabeth that are kept under 24/7 surveillance by rangers keeping watch for poachers. Being close to these powerful and massive creatures without any fence or barrier is simply incredible. They appeared calm and undisturbed by our presence while they slowly moved around eating the grass. We were warned how aggressive they could be and to not make any sudden movements or loud noises. The rhino tour was a part of our game drives conducted during our stay at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club .

Seeing the Rhinos in Kenya during Safari

The Fairmont Mara Safari Club is a series of luxurious furnished tents featuring running water, hard floors, lights, four post beds with comfortable mattresses, and situated right along the Mara River. Our tent had a beautiful front porch overlooking the meandering river that was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the wilderness.

Fifth Stop: Nairobi (1 night)

Fly from Ngerende to Nairobi.

Where to Stay in Nairobi

The Nairobi Serena Hotel  was lovely and was comparable to nice chain hotels such as Hilton and Marriott.

The appropriately named Carnivore Restaurant was outstanding with attentive staff and a lively atmosphere. It is akin to a Brazilian steakhouse. Servers pass around the tables with a continuous supply of a variety of meats, including steak, crocodile and ostrich, and carve the meats of your choice table-side.

Safari Add-Ons

A hot air balloon ride over the Massai Mara plains at sunrise is surely a thrilling experience. We left our hotel by 4 am to take part in this activity, but sadly had to return back to the hotel since the winds were too strong. Waking up early was still rewarding as the red eyes of wandering hippos while it was pitch black were visible. We were told hippos walk around 5 miles every night.

Immerse yourself in the culture and lifestyle of nomadic African tribes. Different tour operators stop at various villages for a fee paid to the village. We visited a Samburu village in Samburu and I had a two-on-one meeting with a Maasai tribal member named Kenneth in Amboseli. The Maasai are a well-known nomadic African warrior tribe frequently traveling between Tanzania and Kenya following rainfall patterns for better pastures for their cattle. The Samburu chief told us the only major difference between their tribe and the Maasai are that the Samburu members are better looking.

The informal meeting was an enlightening learning experience about their history, customs, childhood, and culture. The elders send the warriors to scope out the land to determine where the tribe should move. Visiting a tribe offered a glimpse into their day-to-day life and into their homes, but it felt like a commercialized display for tourists.

As we approached the village, a group of ladies warmly welcomed us with a song and dance. They wore bright colored clothing and beaded necklaces that had multiple rows stretching 8-12ish inches around their necks. They energetically insisted the ladies in our group join along. The warrior men, also wearing brightly colored clothing, held long sticks while they demonstrated their impressive jumping abilities, and then they showed us how they make fire by rubbing sticks.

Eighteen small huts made by women with mud, sticks, cardboard and cow dung were spread around the village in a circular shape enclosed by a wall of dead tree branches. The interior of the huts, while still very small, was more spacious than I had imagined. There was a wall separating the parents’ room from the kids’ room. There was even a small walled off area for the kitchen with a hole in the roof to allow smoke to escape. The floor was the dirt of the earth. The bedrooms had cow hides laid out to make sleeping more comfortable.

Kenneth explained their diet consists nearly completely of cow. The Maasai believe all the cows on earth were given to them by God, which created conflict with other tribes in the past. They eat the meat and fat from the cow, occasionally from a goat, and drink the milk and blood from the cow. Sometimes they will combine the two to have what Kenneth excitably described as a “blood milkshake.” They don’t eat fruits, vegetables, or other animals.

Cows are given to the family of a bride as part of her dowry before the girl is married with the average number of cows being 5. The wedding ceremony is a full day affair that starts early in the morning. There’s lots of dancing and many cows are involved in the ceremony. As a man obtains more cows, it is common for him to marry a second or third wife.

Frequently Asked Questions about a Kenya Itinerary with a Safari

When is the best time to do a kenya safari.

If you’re interested in the Great Migration, which is one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the world, you should plan your visit Kenya between July and October . During this period, over a million wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya, providing incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. For general wildlife viewing, the dry seasons from June to October and January to February are considered the best times. During these periods, vegetation is sparse and animals tend to congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. Additionally, the weather during these periods is more pleasant with less rainfall and clear skies. Bird watchers, however, might prefer to visit between November and April when many migratory bird species are present. It’s worth mentioning that Kenya’s wildlife parks offer great wildlife viewing year-round and each season has its own charm. The off-peak rainy season (April to June) may mean more challenging road conditions, but it also brings fewer tourists, lower rates, and the lush, green landscape is a beautiful sight in itself.

Nine months of the year in northern Kenya are dry and without rain, which allows for superb game viewing along the palm-lined rivers that flow through Meru and down from Mount Kenya, or the perennial Ngiro River that runs through Samburu National Park .

zambezi safari october

The Zambezi River borders the Lower Zambezi, which is a blessing. The Zambezi River is peaceful and consistent, in contrast to the nation’s Luangwa River, so you may take part in a variety of activities there even when the temperature is high. Elephants, water monitors, vervet monkeys, and a variety of colourful birds are among the wildlife extravaganzas that canoeing with a guide down one of its waterways provides.

ruaha safari in october

Tanzania’s main parks are still in peak season, and the heat is much milder than in southern Africa’s main parks, particularly those in Botswana, Zambia, and Namibia. We love the dry-season parks in October, especially Ruaha and Katavi , where the lack of tourists and abundance of game make for a fantastic and authentic safari experience. Tarangire’s elephant herds are at their largest, while river crossings in the Serengeti have increased as the herds begin their journey south.

South African Safari in October

Kruger NP

The month of October is an interesting time to visit South Africa because the Cape is entering its peak season, with beautiful days and clear skies. The Kruger National Park is also remarkable at this time of year because the rains have not yet arrived.

Botswana Safari in October

savuti safari

Botswana’s Chobe River, Savuti, and Linyanti are the best places to visit in October for wildlife, with thirsty elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, and more antelope species than you can count. Let’s just say the predators have an easy time of it. Ambushes at waterholes are a favourite tactic for lions and leopards, while cheetahs and wild dogs charge into impala herds, singling out the weak and unlucky. With game viewing at its peak, you don’t want to miss out on the excitement of a safari in October.

African Tropical Islands

seychelles

October is a great time to visit some of the top destinations in East Africa, particularly the tropical islands. There is very little rain to ruin your afternoons in Zanzibar and even less in Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago, and island temperatures are ideal—warm but not sweltering. In Seychelles , underwater visibility may reach an incredible 30 meters or 100 feet of breathtaking beauty.

Kenya in October: Transitional Period Travel Tips

Giraffe at the Amboseli park, Kenya in October

  • ~ mins read

Kenya in October is a month of seasonal change. It is when the country’s weather shifts from dry to wet while the famous animal migration across its savanna reaches its climax. School holidays are over by this time of year and the beaches along the Indian Ocean coast become more relaxed and sparsely populated.

By October-end, wildlife will be harder to spot as the undergrowth starts to grow taller and thicker, but for the most part of the month, this is the best time for a safari experience in Massai Mara and other parks across the country. The savanna grasslands are still at their shortest and many watering holes are dry, which means you will have a better chance of spotting Kenya’s rich wildlife that congregates at the remaining water sources.

Kenya Weather in October

Sunset in Savannah in Kenya in October

Kenya’s weather undergoes a rapid transition from dry season to wet starting mid-October. Expect a daily high of 26℃ and a low of 15℃ in Nairobi. Plus, if you are in the city towards the end of the month, you should expect some rainfall.

Coastal Kenya is still balmy and sunny though. In Mombasa, the temperature ranges from 22℃ to 30℃. In Nakuru, in the country’s west, the mercury hovers anywhere between 11℃ and 26℃. The highlands around Mount Kenya are often cloudier than the rest of the country during this time of year. Temperatures in this part of the country sway between 14℃ and 22℃.

Why visit kenya in october.

Tropical coasts of Mombasa in Kenya in October

Enjoy the last month of the dry season in Kenya in October, which also happens to be the best time to explore the country’s wild and exotic attractions. Below are some experiences you can have during your stay in Kenya in October:

  • Best safari experience: A million and a half wildebeests migrate north across the Mara River from the Serengeti between the months of July and October. Be there to witness the spectacle. Your chances of spotting the Big Five in Maasai Mara are also much higher during this month, as these animals frequent the few remaining watering holes and the wetland fringes of the Mara River.
  • Hell’s Gate and Lake Naivasha: This small national park west of Nairobi has a large antelope and hippo population. Similarly, Lake Naivasha abounds with many bird species. October is the best month to explore the highlights of Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park.
  • Hit the beaches: Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline has some of East Africa’s best beaches, which receive fewer visitors during October. Holidays in Mombasa and Malindi are popular among visitors, and you might want to add them to your itinerary.

Where to Go and What to Do

Ecological diversity in Lake Nakuru Kenya in October

Traveling to Kenya can be a bit expensive in October, but the month also offers the best chances of witnessing the country’s unrivaled spectacle in the form of wildlife migrations in Maasai Mara. Places such as Mara Serena Lodge, the riparian forests along the Mara and Talek rivers, the Oloololo Escarpment, and the Mara Triangle are the best places to spot Kenya’s rich wildlife and bird populations.

October is also the month to visit Nairobi as the Kenyan capital hosts the annual Safari Sevens, widely regarded as Africa’s premier rugby tournament. Fans from across East Africa descend on the city to watch the games at the RFUEA Ground and in bars and restaurants all over the city. Attending this sporting festival is a great way to meet people from all over East Africa and make new friends.

To escape October showers, you could sip a cool drink and swap tall safari stories at the Terrace Bar of Mayhouse 680 Hotel (a favorite watering hole of hunters and safari guides). You might also want to visit the Karen Blixen Museum, Nairobi National Museum, and the Matbronze Art Gallery and Foundry to check out their collections. Going souvenir shopping at the Maasai Market is also a good idea while you are in Nairobi.

Straddling the Equator in the heart of East Africa, Kenya’s diverse range of climates and landscapes provide an opportunity to spot some of the continent’s most iconic animals. Despite the higher prices for flights and accommodation, October is the best time to explore and experience Kenya and its vast wilderness.

Departure from Europe destination for overnight flight to Nairobi (flight ticket not Included in Our price).

Day 2: 2nd Oct 2023 – 2024

Morning arrival in Nairobi and transfer to Mountain Lodge, with several short stops en route. Our first destination is the Blue Post Hotel in Thika, where we will bird the hotel grounds and woodlands along the Chania River. Here we will start seeing our first exciting African species, which may include Hadada Ibis, Red-eyed Dove, African Green-pigeon, Speckled Mouse-bird, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, White-headed and Spot-flanked Barbets, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Mountain Wagtail, Grey-olive Greenbul, Black-throated Wattle-eye, Grey-capped Warbler, Variable, Collared and Scarlet-Chested Sunbirds, Holub’s Golden-weaver, Baglafecht Weaver and African Citril. Our second stop will be at the large Tana River, where we should find Moustached Grass-warbler, African Golden-weaver, Yellow Bishop, and Brown-backed and Bronze Mannikins. We will also make a stop at Wajee Camp, a noted site for the endemic Hinde’s babbler. While birding the steep forested slopes of the camp, we stand a chance of locating Ayre’s Hawk-eagle, African Wood-owl, Brown-hooded Kingfisher, and Green-headed Sunbird.  Mountain Lodge is located on the lower slopes of Mt. Kenya, Africa’s second tallest mountain, and is an excellent place to locate many highland forest species. Along the entrance road we may encounter Augur Buzzard, Crowned Hawk-eagle, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Moustached Tinkerbird, Mosque Swallow, Black Saw-wing, Sharpe’s Starling, Black-tailed Oriole, Purple-throated Cuckoo-shrike, African Paradise-flycatcher, Cape Robin-Chat, African Stonechat, Broad-ringed White-eye, and Eastern Double-collared Sunbird. The large waterhole and salt lick at the lodge is host to many mammals and we can expect Blue Sykes Monkey, White-tailed and Marsh Mongooses, Common Genet, Bushbuck, Giant Forest Hog, and the tiny Suni. At an elevation of almost 8,000ft nights can be quite chilly. One night stay at the Forest Mountain Lodge.

Days 3-4: 3rd & 4th Oct 2023 – 2024

Early-morning birding from the lodge grounds is always productive and may include Marabou Stork, Black Goshawk, Delegourge’s (Eastern Bronze Naped) Pigeon, Fine-banded Woodpecker, Cape Wagtail, Slender-billed and Mountain Greenbuls, Rüppell’s Robin-chat, Hunter’s Cisticola, Grey and Black-throated Apalis, Grey-headed Negrofinch and Yellow-crowned Canary. We will also take a short walk from the lodge along the entrance road in search of the more secretive species of the area such as Scaly Francolin, African Hill Babbler, White-starred Robin, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Mountain Yellow Warbler, White-browed Crombec, Yellow-bellied Waxbill and Oriole Finch. Mid-morning we will leave the cool climate of Mt Kenya for more arid country in the north, specifically the Samburu Game Reserve. The drive will offer spectacular scenery, and the grasslands along the roadside are a great place for Black-winged Plover, Black-shouldered Kite, Dusky Turtle-dove, Angola Swallow, Greater Blue-eared Glossy-starling, Cape Rook, Boran Cisticola, Tacazze Sunbird, Red-collared and Long-tailed Widowbirds (seasonal) and Speke’s Weaver. Samburu is one of the most exciting reserves in East Africa. The semi-desert habitat and the rich woodlands along the Ewaso Nyiro River are teeming with wildlife. Exploration of the fantastic reserve will produce an almost overwhelming array of bird species: Palm-nut and Hooded Vultures, Bateleur, Martial Eagle, African Hawk-eagle, Crested and Yellow-necked Francolins, Vulturine Guineafowl, Buff-crested and White-bellied Bustards, Black-faced and Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse, Red-bellied Parrot, African Scops-Owl, Pearl-spotted Owlet, Somali Bee-eater, Rufous-crowned Roller, Von der Decken’s Hornbill, Red-and-yellow Barbet, Bearded Woodpecker, Pink-breasted Lark, African Bare-eyed Thrush, Rosy-patched Bush-shrike, Hunter’s and Black-bellied Sunbirds, Golden-breasted and Fischer’s Starlings, Donaldson-Smith’s Sparrow-weaver, Cut-throat and the stunning Somali Bunting. Mammal life is also prolific, with many species not seen elsewhere on our tour. Just a few of the many possibilities are Olive Baboon, Black-faced Vervet Monkey, Dwarf Mongoose, Striped Hyena, Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Kirk’s Dikdik, Common Waterbuck, Gerenuk and the magnificent Beisa Oryx. Two nights stay at the Samburu Lodge.

Day 5: 5th Oct 2023 – 2024

On our last morning in Samburu we will visit the nearby Buffalo Springs Game Reserve. The slightly different habitat is home to many specialities: Somali Ostrich, Lappet-faced Vulture, Rüppell’s Griffon- vulture, Eastern Chanting-goshawk, Pygmy Falcon, Cream-coloured (Somali) Courser, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, White-headed Mouse-bird, Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Nubian and Cardinal Woodpeckers, Fischer’s and Chestnut-headed Sparrow-larks, Yellow-vented Eremomela, Spotted Morning-thrush, Marico Sunbird, Taita Fiscal, Golden Palm Weaver, Black-capped Social Weaver and African Silverbill. We then have a mid-morning departure for the Naro Moro River Lodge located on the northern edge of Mt Kenya. En route we will make a stop at the Meru Forest, where many unique species can be found. Much of the bird life here resembles the coastal avifauna of Kenya. Here we will search for White-eared Barbet, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, Black-headed Apalis, African Crested-flycatcher and Kenrick’s and Black-bellied Glossy-starlings. Our lodge is set in the perfect setting of highland forest, flowing brooks, and gorgeous flower filled grounds. The birding in this area is also very nice and we may see African Black Duck, Narina Trogon, Sulphur-breasted Bush-shrike, Tropical Boubou, Chin-spot Batis, African Black-headed Oriole, and Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu. One night stay at the Naro Moro River Lodge. Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Silvery-cheeked and Trumpeter Hornbills and Brown-hooded Kingfisher can all be seen here.

Day 6, 6th Oct 2023 – 2024

Leaving early we will make an ascent onto Mt Kenya entering the vast and pristine montane forest of Mt Kenya National Park. We will be leaving mid-day and transferring to Lake Nakuru National Park allowing time to search for several key species along the way. A large rocky escarpment en-route is a favourite roosting spot for the Mackinder’s Eagle-Owl and with some luck we should be able to locate this highly sought-after species. The Acacia scrub by a nearby lake is a favourite haunt for Little Grebe, Yellow-billed Duck, Red-winged Starling, Little Rock-thrush, Pale Flycatcher, and Purple Grenadier. In the afternoon we will arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park, which is called by some, the greatest birding spectacle on earth! Huge numbers of Lesser Flamingos feed in the shallow alkaline water, sometimes up to a million, with smaller numbers of Greater Flamingos. Exploring the Acacia woodland and the lakeside marshes we will no doubt encounter many wonderful avian delights: Great White Pelican, Great Cormorant, African Spoonbill, African Fish-eagle, African Harrier-hawk, Hildebrandt’s Francolin, Grey-headed Gull, Broad-billed Roller, Levaillant’s Cuckoo, White-browed Coucal, Green Wood-hoopoe, Rufous-necked Wryneck, Grey Woodpecker, Black Cuckoo-shrike, Northern Anteater-chat, Grey-backed Fiscal, Brown-crowned Tchagra and African Firefinch. Mammals are also quite common in the park and it is one of the few places in East Africa where the endangered White Rhino can be found. Some of the other mammals we hope to find include Rothchild’s Giraffe and Reedbuck. One night stay at the Lake Nakuru Lodge .

Days 7-8: 7th & 8th Oct 2023 – 2024

All morning will be spent in Lake Nakuru National Park. Our next destination is a fresh-water lake in the north called Lake Baringo. Here the combination of a large lake in semi-desert country and the nearby Baringo cliffs provide the perfect habitat for a great diversity of bird life. Specialties in this area are Dark Chanting-goshawk, Heuglin’s Courser, Northern White-faced Owl, Greyish Eagle-owl, Slender-tailed Nightjar, Jackson’s and Hemprich’s Hornbills, Black-throated Barbet, Red-fronted Warbler, Brown-tailed Chat, Somali Tit, Beautiful Sunbird, Bristle-crowned Starling, Golden-backed and Little Weavers, Northern Masked-weaver and Northern Red Bishop. Other possibilities in the area include Lanner Falcon, Verreaux’s Eagle, Blue-naped Mousebird, Madagascar Bee-eater, Red-fronted Barbet, Northern Crombec, Pygmy Batis, Cardinal Quelea and Eastern Paradise-whydah. Two nights stay at the Lake Baringo Soi Lodge .

Days 12-13: 12th & 13th Oct 2023 – 2024

Here we will find a wide assortment of bird life, as well as some of the most spectacular mammals on the continent. Complimenting the wildlife is the dramatic scenery of endless grasslands, lush river valleys, and steep rock strewn escarpments. Mid-morning we will depart for Nairobi, making several birding stops en route. Our first destination is the Kinangop Plateau where we hope to find the endemic Sharpe’s Pipit. What to Wear in Kenya Safari Destinations? (12 + Essential Items)

' src=

If you have never been on safari before, it can be difficult to know what clothes to wear on safari in Kenya. I experienced the same difficulties while packing for Kenya in October 2022.

I was apprehensive about packing the right items, packing too much, or not packing enough. Plus, I could not find examples of the best type of clothing for safari in Kenya.

This article will teach you exactly what to wear in Kenya safari destinations. In addition you will learn what to wear on safari in Masai Mara, how to dress in Nairobi, and the best shoes for safari in Kenya.

What to wear in Kenya Safari Destinations - Sasaab Lodge Samburu

While this packing article works as part of a travel guide for Kenya , you can also apply most of the contents of this article to other safari destinations, such as Tanzania and South Africa.

If you require further information, you can read this article on what to pack for a Kenyan Safari , which talks about luggage, toiletries, travel documents, first aid supplies, and more.

What is a Day Like on Safari?

Safari colours in Samburu - Sasaab Lodge vehicle

Before deciding what to take on safari in Kenya, ensure you know the details of your itinerary and understand how a day on safari works.

You will most likely spend several hours each day inside your safari vehicle unless you have planned any walking safaris or evening cultural activities.

Read the following article to learn about how you will spend your days on safari in Kenya and learn more about visits to Nairobi National Park here.

Weather for Kenya Safari

The weather forecast for your safari in Kenya can change drastically based on the location of your lodges and the time of year you are travelling.

The seasons in Kenya are either a rainy season or a dry season. June to October are generally warm and dry months. Whereas March to May and November to December are the wet periods of the year.

Wearing Poncho in Masai Mara Kenya - Safari Collection

Knowing what to pack for Masai Mara safaris can be challenging, but you should consider the weather for your specific travel period to assist you.

The climate is cooler in Masai Mara from June to August. Therefore, you will need warmer layers for the mornings and evenings.

Plus, the day temperature will be lower than at other times of the year. So, you should consider bringing more long-sleeved options than short-sleeved ones.

For those travelling in September and October, it will be warmer than the other dry months. Therefore, remember to bring your swimwear for an outdoor mid-day dip. Plus, pack some short-sleeved options or light materials, such as linen.

To give more detail, the early morning and night temperatures during the cooler months in Masai Mara could be around 10 degrees Celsius.

You can still wear short-sleeve pyjamas at night because the blankets and hot water bottle will keep you warm. If you are easily cold or you are used to sleeping in long-sleeve pyjamas, you could bring a longer layer for your legs.

You will want to wear a warm layer, such as a sweatshirt, on top of your regular safari day clothes in the first few hours of the game drive. Plus, a jacket would be handy. Or, if your safari lodge provides a fleece or blanket, I suggest you wear that.

The day can later reach over 20 degrees Celsius, so you need to be able to take a few layers off to be a comfortable temperature in the sun.

What to wear in Kenya Safari - shorts in Samburu

If you are travelling to Samburu National Park during your safari in Kenya, you will require some different clothing options.

While Samburu typically has a wet and dry season, Samburu is currently in a severe drought (2022), and it has not rained in two years. (Update 2023: it is no longer in a drought).

In the middle of the day, Samburu will become scorching hot.

When I visited in October, it would easily reach 33 degrees Celsius at the hottest part of the day.

However, it was slightly chilly in the morning. Therefore, layering is essential.

What to Wear on Safari in Kenya?

The dress code for safari is casual. Even if you have booked a luxury safari, you should aim to dress comfortably and in the correct colours (explained below).

Opt for the right kind of material; lightweight, and dress in layers, and then you will be suitably dressed. The day generally starts cooler and ends up warm by the middle of the day.

Safari Colours

What colours to wear on Safari in Kenya - khaki, beige, grey clothing

Your safari wardrobe should consist of khaki, green, brown, beige, or grey. This colour pallet will help you blend into the savannah and observe the animals without being noticed.

Do not bring bright coloured shirts on safari, for example, no red, blue, or orange. These colours are distracting for the animals.

While on a Masai Mara safari you will most likely come across lions and feel a little timid; therefore, you will feel more comfortable wearing a subtle colour pallet.

You are not allowed to wear camouflage in Africa because it is illegal in Kenya and other African countries.

It may be tempting to bring some white clothes to pair nicely with your green or beige outfits, but it is best to avoid white items. Not only will they show dust and dirt more easily. But also, animals find it easy to spot white because their eyes see in black and white.

Lastly, black and navy are some of the colours not to wear in Kenya on safari because these tones attract nasty biting tsetse flies. However, I did not experience the tsetse flies in Samburu or Masai Mara in October.

Some travellers are unaware of wearing safari colours, or they choose to ignore this advice. However, it is best to wear the suggested colours to watch the animals enjoyably from a distance without startling them.

Nonetheless, you do not need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe until you have rummaged through your options at home. You may be surprised to see what neutral colours you already own.

African Safari Clothes

Photographing Elephants in Samburu with linen shirt and cap

The best kind of safari outfit to pack in your suitcase is one that can be mixed and matched. You should bring several t-shirts and bottoms that are short-sleeved and long-sleeved that you can combine to make different outfits.

A bush hat is one of the most important things to take on safari in Kenya. Again, make sure it is a neutral colour. Wide-brimmed hats with a necktie are great options, such as this sun hat from Fjallraven .

Baseball caps are fine, but make sure it fits well because you do not want the hat to fly off when the vehicle picks up speed.

A neutral jacket will complete your safari outfit. It is good to wear first thing in the morning and for your evening sundowner drinks. You can leave it in your safari vehicle when you are not wearing it.

What Shoes to Wear on Safari in Kenya?

What shoes to wear in Kenya on Safari - wearing converse

People say that the best shoes for safari in Kenya are lace-up boots. While they are good options, especially if you are doing a walking safari, if you do not own this type of shoe, you will also be fine wearing a pair of trainers/sneakers .

Since you will be sitting in your safari vehicle most of the day, the main requirement is comfortable closed-toed footwear.

You will get out of the vehicle for your bush breakfast, where it may be dusty on the floor, so do not bring your favourite shoes. Ideally, the trainers should be easily washed or wiped.

If your trainers are mesh on top, the dust and dirt will seep through and discolour your socks. Also, avoid bringing shoes that are suede.

Make sure your shoes have a thick sole to prevent any thorns from piercing through your shoes into your foot. One of my group members experienced a thorn in the shoe and it was painful.

Other Shoes to Wear in Kenya Safari

  • Flip-flops or sandals – it is worth bringing a separate pair of shoes to wear around camp during the day. If it is warm your feet will want a breather from wearing socks.
  • Closed-toed shoes for dinner – you may want to wear a separate, fresher pair of trainers in the evening to dinner after you have showered from your afternoon game drive. It is best to keep your feet covered because there is more chance of getting bitten by insects at night.
  • Waterproof shoes – walking boots are unnecessary unless you are travelling in the rainy season or you will be doing extensive walking safari activities. Wellington boots may be available at your camp.

Remember when packing your bags not to bring plastic bags to Kenya as they are illegal. Purchase some reusable shoe bags for footwear instead.

I brought a pair of strappy sandals but wore trainers the whole trip because I did not want to get mosquito bites on my feet.

Suggested Footwear for Safari

  • Converse All-Stars – these are the shoes that I brought on safari to Kenya, and they worked well.
  • Reebok C 85 Vintage – these are another option for comfortable and easily cleaned shoes (I also own these shoes)
  • Brown Leather Lace-up Boots
  • Brown Boots from Birkenstock
  • Havaianas Flip Flops – women’s flip-flops or men’s flip-flips
  • Birkenstock Arizona EVA Slides (waterproof)

Safari Clothes for Women

Safari Collection vehicle - Sasaab Lodge

Ladies – do not be tempted to bring a dress or skirt on safari. You will need to clamber, rather indelicately, in and out of a safari vehicle. It will be more practical to wear trousers or shorts to cover your modesty.

Ideally, avoid one-piece items of clothing, such as jumpsuits, for game drives because if you need to use a bush toilet (a literal bush in the savannah), you want to be able to go as discretely and quickly as possible.

Most safari lodges offer laundry services. The housekeeping team will wash a couple of items per person per day. Some lodges wash these items by hand, whereas others machine-wash the clothes. Most lodges will line dry clothes.

Due to cultural reasons, the lodge will not wash women’s underwear, so bring enough for the whole trip. Alternatively, pack some powder detergent or ask your safari lodge if they have any to wash your delicate items in your bathroom sink.

Safari Clothes for Men

There are fewer specifics for men to be aware of compared to women.

However, something to consider is bringing cargo pants that zip off to become shorts. They are ideal for safari parks that start cool and reach high peak temperatures. Samburu National Park can be sweltering during the middle of the day.

Also, if you are buying new safari t-shirts, make sure it is a breathable, sweat-resistant material. Lululemon has some suitable options for men.

Safari Packing List Kenya

What to wear at Giraffe Manor - giraffes in distance

This men’s and women’s safari packing list is sufficient clothing for visiting two or three safari camps for three nights at each.

As a reminder, many safari lodges will offer a complimentary laundry service, enabling you to pack lighter and bring less clothing. Ladies should pack more underwear than men because the laundry service will not wash these items.

If you have booked a stay at Giraffe Manor, you may want to bring a fancier outfit due to the high number of photo opportunities.

Tops: What to Wear in Kenya Safari

During the day, I mostly wore a short-sleeve t-shirt with a long-sleeved, button-up layer on top. Otherwise, I wore a long-sleeved t-shirt. Linen materials are best where possible.

Beige jacket and Sasaab safari vehicle

Jumper/hoodie x 1

I brought a hoodie to wear during the cold mornings from around 6:00 to 9:00 AM. You do not need to bring more than one.

  • Soft French Terry Sweatshirt from ARKET
  • Essential Popover Hoodie from Abercrombie
  • French Terry Sweatshirt from ARKET
  • Zip Neck from Arc’teryx
  • Half-Zip Sweatshirt from Abercrombie

In places such as Masai Mara or Nairobi, it can be chilly in the morning. So, a jacket available to throw on top is beneficial.

It would be handy if your jacket had several pockets for quick access to items on game drives.

  • Double Pocket Shacket from New Look
  • Sézane Khaki Jacket
  • Khaki Oversized Jacket from Mango
  • Lightweight Highland Skye Jacket from J.Crew
  • Fatigues Jacket from Gap

Short-Sleeved Shirts x 2

You can layer up a short sleeve t-shirt with an over-shirt instead of a long-sleeve. It is beneficial to dress like this for the warmer climates so you can take a layer off.

  • Scoop-Neck Tee from Everlane
  • Love Crew T-shirt from Lululemon
  • Linen Blend French Sleeve from UNIQLO
  • Super-Soft Lyocell V-Neck from The White Company

Bring some lightweight long sleeved shirts to wear on game drives in the cooler months.

  • Waffle-Knit Henley T-Shirt from Gap
  • Pima Ribbed Long-Sleeve Crew from Everlane
  • Ribbed Henley T-Shirt from Gap
  • Lyocell Blend Long Sleeve from ARKET

Smart-Casual Blouses/Shirts x 2

Bring a couple of long-sleeve shirts to wear during dinner on safari.

  • Linen Shirt from ARKET
  • V-Neck T-Shirt from Mango
  • 100% Linen Shirt from UNIQLO
  • Waffle Henley Long Sleeved T-Shirt from UNIQLO
  • Crew Neck Long Sleeved T-Shirt from UNIQLO

Rain Jacket x 1

You may need to bring a raincoat to wear in Nairobi, if you will be visiting there during your safari. The jacket should fold up small so it can fit in your luggage. Some safari lodges will provide a raincoat, so it may not be necessary to bring.

  • Women’s Raincoat from The North Face
  • Men’s Packable Raincoat from Lululemon

Only bring a fleece if your safari lodge does not provide one and you are travelling during a colder month or to a colder destination. It is not needed in Samburu where it is hot.

  • Ladies’ Retro Fleece from Patagonia
  • Men’s Retro Fleece from Patagonia

Bottoms: What to Wear in Kenya Safari

What trousers to wear on Safari in Kenya - Sundowner in Masai Mara

Wearing trousers for game drives is best, particularly because you start early in the morning and finish when the sun sets.

In some locations, such as Samburu during the hottest time of year, you could wear shorts during the day on safari.

It was safe to wear shorts in this instance because I did not experience any biting insects during the day in Samburu in October.

There were flies during the day when we were by the pool at Sasaab Lodge. Plus, the restaurant had spinning fly traps on the table at lunch, but I was not bitten by any flies.

You will mostly wear shorts around the camp during downtime moments. But make sure they are in safari colours in case you want to wear the shorts on safari.

  • Viscose Linen Shorts from ARKET
  • Sweat Shorts from Adanola
  • Dry Stretch Shorts from UNIQLO
  • Cotton Shorts from ARKET

Day-Time Trousers x 2

You should bring several pairs of trousers to wear during the day on game drives.

  • Stretch High-Rise Pant from Lululemon
  • Relaxed Utility Pants from Abercrombie
  • Leggings from Adanola
  • Cargo Pant from J.Crew
  • Convertible Trousers from Peter Storm

Evening Trousers x 1

Keep one pair of trousers clean to wear in the evening after a shower.

  • Cargo Pocket High-Rise Pant from Lululemon
  • Modern Cargo Pant from Aritzia
  • Classic Fit Pant from Lululemon

Accessories

  • Linen Bandana Square from Etsy
  • Linen Bandana from Gap (Canada)
  • Long socks for evenings
  • Ankle socks (an option for the daytime)
  • Swimwear x 2 (assuming your safari lodge has a swimming pool)
  • Sports bra for ladies on the bumpy safari roads
  • Ladies’ Super Soft Pyjamas from LAKE (my favourite brand)
  • Men’s Soft Pyjama Set from LAKE

What to Wear on Safari Evenings in Kenya

One of the more difficult things to know when picking clothes to bring to Kenya is what to wear in the evening on safari. It is unclear what clothing is appropriate for dinners at camp and what temperature it will be at night.

Unless explicitly stated, you are not required to dress up formally for dinner on safari. Therefore, you can keep it relatively casual, just like your daytime safari clothes, but it is more important for the clothing to be long-sleeved. Mosquitos are most prevalent between dusk and dawn on safari in Kenya. You should also wear insect repellent.

What to wear in evenings on safari in Kenya.jpeg

You should bring a few clean, long-sleeved shirts for dinner. Plus, you should pack some trousers or leggings for the evening. You may want a fresh pair of clothes to change into after your post-game drive shower.

Leave the skirts and dresses at home unless you are wearing tights underneath, but even so – I would not bring these types of outfits with you.

If you are visiting several camps on safari, you do not need to bring a new outfit for each night. Truthfully, it is usually dark in the camp at night, so it is hard to see what anyone is wearing.

Evening meals are often by candlelight or dimmed lanterns.

When picking evening clothes for safari, consider a range of temperatures. Some safari locations are warm, even at night – such as Samburu. Whereas Masai Mara feels chillier in the evening.

So, bring some lighter layers, such as a linen shirt or a blouse, and a heavier long-sleeved option, such as a thicker long-sleeve t-shirt with your safari jacket on top.

Safari colours are not essential for evening meals, but I kept all my evening clothes in the same colour scheme just in case I wanted to pair them with my other clothes.

What Bag to Take on Safari?

What bag to bring on safari in Kenya? Beige clothes, longchamp bag and converse shoes

There are several items you will want to bring with you on safari while on game drives, and one of the easiest ways to do this is by packing a separate day bag.

There is plenty of space in the safari vehicle to place your bag at your feet or on a chair beside you. Therefore, you can bring various items in addition to a bag; such as jackets, blankets, and other extra layers.

I suggest bringing a packable bag for your daytime safari items that can be easily folded up in your luggage.

A suitable bag would be a canvas tote bag that folds up small, such as this Canvas bag from ARKET . Although this bag does not zip up, your belongings should not get too dusty.

Alternatively, bring another packable bag from your home. For example, I had an old Longchamp Le Pliage bag that worked perfectly for carrying my items on safari and packing it in my suitcase after use.

Of course, you can always bring a backpack if preferred. The backpack does not need to be particularly technical. This Osprey Dry Stuff Backpack is waterproof and packable, which means it can easily be packed inside your safari luggage.

You could also use the travel backpack you used to carry all your hand luggage items. However, you do not need to bring the entire contents of the bag with you, nor do you want to leave all those items loose in your tent.

Things to Carry for Safari

FUJIFILM X-T30 II camera

While on game drives, you may need a couple of items. Some safari vehicles will provide these already, whereas others will not. Therefore, it is best to check with your lodge beforehand.

  • Camera – if you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera, make sure you bring it for the game drives. The quality is much superior to using the camera on your phone. I recommend Fujifilm X-T30 II
  • Camera lens – I highly recommend renting a lens to be able to capture the animals no matter what distance you are from them
  • Extra camera equipment – you may want to pack spare camera batteries or memory cards to ensure you never get caught unprepared on game drives
  • Binoculars – if you are not taking photos on a camera with a good zoom, binoculars are the next best thing. Buy binoculars here
  • Sun cream – you will need to apply sunscreen a few hours into your game drive as the sun gets hotter. My favourite non-oily suncreams include Ultra Violette Extreme Screen or La Roche Posay Anthelios
  • Hand sanitiser – use this to clean up before eating a bush breakfast or after using the bush toilet
  • Bandana or scarf – it can be very dusty on a game drive (particularly in dry parks, such as Samburu); therefore, something to cover your nose and mouth is essential
  • Hat – it will keep your head warm in the chilly mornings and cover your face from the sun (wide-brim hats are best)
  • Insect repellent – from dusk to dawn, there is a higher likelihood of getting mosquito bites
  • Tissues – the chilly morning air can make your nose run
  • Sunglasses – it is useful to have sunglasses when it is bright, although it is harder to spot the wildlife and take photos while wearing them

What to Wear in Nairobi Kenya?

What to wear in Nairobi - Giraffe Manor - wearing green jumpsuit and beige jacket

It may be colder in Nairobi than in your other safari locations, particularly in the morning or at night. So, ensure you have clothes that you can layer up to start and end your day.

Most Nairobi hotels have a pool, so remember to pack some swimwear and clothes to wear to walk to the pool.

A pair of comfortable trainers work best in Nairobi. Stick to closed-toed shoes for the entire Kenya trip, except for sandals or flip-flops for the camp, by the pool, or at a beach.

In Nairobi, you are out of your safe cocoon of the safari lifestyle; therefore, you need to keep your wits about you. Try to blend in with the crowd and avoid heavy slogans or bright, eye-catching outfits.

Depending on what you are doing in Nairobi, your clothes that can get dusty or dirty. Some of the best things to do in Nairobi involve getting a little mucky, such as visiting the baby elephants at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and a tour of Nairobi National Park .

You may have limited luggage space, so it is ideal to wear your “safari-style clothes” in Nairobi, with a couple of additions. For example, a pair of jeans for evening meals may be appreciated.

This article will help you choose whether to book meet and greet services at Nairobi airport .
