Amusement parks were a huge part of my childhood, including visits to Kings Island almost every year. No matter where we lived, we’d make the trek to Mason, Ohio, for a day of family fun. While the park has changed since those childhood visits, Kings Island is still one of the best amusement parks in America and home to tons of thrills and family adventures . Keep reading our complete guide to Kings Island to help you plan the perfect family trip this summer.

Table of Contents

What is Kings Island?

King’s Island is a popular amusement park located in Mason, Ohio, northeast of Cincinnati. The amusement park was opened in 1972. The park is owned and operated by Cedar Fair. Kings Island won Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Award for “Best Kid’s Area” from 2001 to 2018. It was also recently named the Park of the Year by the international trade journal Amusement Today at the 2022 Golden Ticket Awards.

Kings Island Updates for 2024

Kings Island has a couple of major park updates for 2024 .

  • Camp Snoopy Expansion : Kings Island announced it was expanding its popular kids’ area, Camp Snoopy . The expansion includes Snoopy’s Soap Box Racers, a family-friendly roller coaster, and a new nature-themed play area called Beagle Scout Acres.
  • Cedar Fair and Six Flags Merger : Kings Island’s parent company, Cedar Fair, shook up the amusement world with its recent announcement that it was merging with Six Flags . The announcement occurred in November 2023 and is scheduled to finalize in the first half of 2024. The move combines two of the largest theme park operators in North America. For more detailed information, you can read the official press release from Cedar Fair here . It’s a significant change, but it’s unclear yet how this merger will impact park guests during the 2024 season and beyond.

Kings Island Chaperone Policy

Some of the Cedar Fair Parks, including Kings Island, implemented a chaperone policy last season. The policy change was a response to an increased number of incidents within the parks. It is meant to make park visits enjoyable for all guests. Keep the chaperone policy in mind if you are headed to Kings Island with kids or teens. Here is the King’s Island chaperone policy:

“Under this policy, all guests ages 15 years old or younger must be accompanied by a chaperone who is at least 21 years old in order to be admitted to, or remain in, the park after 4:00 p.m. local time to close. The chaperone must present a valid government-issued photo identification with date of birth at ticket entry. One (1) chaperone may accompany no more than ten (10) guests ages 15 or younger per day. In addition, the chaperone must accompany their party during entry, remain inside the park during their visit, and be available by phone throughout their stay. Guests ages 15 years old or younger who are found inside the park unaccompanied by a chaperone will be subject to ejection. This chaperone requirement applies to all Kings Island ticket and season passholders.”

Your Complete Guide to Visiting Kings Island in 2024

We love Kings Island and plan to continue to visit the park each year with our kids. It’s not as short of a drive for us as it is to other Cedar Fair parks, but it’s still worth the trek.

Our Kings Island review below contains helpful information about visiting Kings Island, including ride information, dining, entertainment, shopping, tickets, and much more. We tried to think of everything, but I’m sure we missed a few details. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments, and we will try to answer them. Here is your complete guide to visiting Kings Island in 2024.

Kings Island Opening Day 2024

Kings Island will open to the public on April 20, 2024. Soak City Water Park opens on May 25, 2024.

Kings Island Rides

One of the highlights of visiting Kings Island, of course, is riding all of the roller coasters and other thrill rides. There are rides at Kings Island for everyone from young children to thrill-seekers to the young at heart. Here’s a look at some of King’s Island’s most popular rides.

Kings Island Roller Coasters

Orion : Orion is one of only seven giga coasters (roller coasters with a height or drop between 300 and 399 feet) in the world. Orion is Kings Island’s tallest, fastest and longest steel roller coaster, reaching speeds up to 91 mph.

The Beast : This rollercoaster is a legend. It opened in 1979 and is still the longest wooden rollercoaster in the world. If you hate waiting in line for hours for what seems like 30 seconds of thrills, then The Beast is for you. The ride lasts four minutes.

The Racer : Always a family favorite, the Racer lets you race around the track side-by-side against park guests in another coaster car. The Racer also once appeared in an episode of the Brady Bunch.

Invertigo : Invertigo is truly an experience as one of the few face-to-face inverted coasters in the world.

Flight of Fear : Take a break from the summer heat to ride this thrilling indoor steel roller coaster.

Diamondback : Diamondback is among the tallest and fastest rides at Kings Island. Also, its open-air seats give you a birds-eye view of all of the action along the way.

Kings Island roller coaster going down a drop

Banshee : Another record-breaker, The Banshee is the world’s longest steel inverted roller coaster.

Backlot Stunt Coaster : Think stunt driver simulation, and you get the Backlot Stunt Coaster.

Mystic Timbers : Another wooden rollercoaster full of twists, turns, and drops.

Adventure Express : For less adventurous coaster fans, the Adventure Express offers thrills and fun without the big drops and endless loops.

The Bat : The Bat is a suspension coaster that leaves you swinging under the track the whole ride.

Other Notable Kings Island Rides

Roller coasters rule the skies at Kings Island, but they aren’t the only rides in the park worth checking out. Kings Island features several other thrill rides that are worth checking out during your next visit to the park.

  • Congo Falls
  • K.I. & Miami Valley Railroad
  • Shake, Rattle & Roll
  • Viking Fury
  • White Water Canyon

Kings Island Kids & Family Rides

The Eiffel Tower

No trip to Kings Island is complete without a trip up the Eiffel Tower. The Kings Island version is a one-third-scale replica of the one in Paris and stands 314 feet tall. Towards the top is an observation tower providing stunning views of the entire park and surrounding area.

Soak City Water Park

Soak City is the water park attached to Kings Island. Admission to Soak City is included with your Kings Island ticket. The water park features wave pools, a lazy river, swimming areas, splash stations, a bodyboarding wave simulator, and countless water slides. Kings Island Ride Restrictions

Like most amusement parks, Kings Island has ride policies and restrictions in place to protect all of its guests, including height, weight, health, and other restrictions. Always familiarize yourself with park restrictions before visiting.

Dining at Kings Island

Just because Kings Island is an amusement park doesn’t mean you should expect the worst when it comes to park dining options. The park offers dining options for everyone, including individuals with specific dietary needs .

Kings Island Dining Plans

Dining plans are a great way for families and individuals to save money when visiting Kings Island. The park offers single-meal and all-day dining plans. Kings Island Restaurants

While it’s not fine dining, it’s also not carnival food either. Sometimes amusement park dining means inferior food. Kings Island  and Soak City offer a variety of dining choices, including several well-known national and regional chains:

  • Calypso Coolers
  • Chicken Shack
  • Coconut Cove Bar
  • Coconut Cove Cafe

  • The Mercado
  • Tom & Chee
  • World’s Greatest Funnel Cakes

Blue Ice Cream

Nothing captures the playfulness, fun, and history of Kings Island more than the park’s blue ice cream. Now, during my childhood, it was called Smurf ice cream. It’s what I still call it as it rightly should be. For even older park fans, it’s known as Huckleberry Hound ice cream.

Blue soft-serve ice cream has been a part of King Island since 1982. There was a brief stint in 1992 when Kings Island stopped serving it, but it quickly returned before a fan revolt ensued.

It’s not a stretch, at least for me, to say getting blue ice cream is almost worth the price of admission.

Can You Bring Food Into Kings Island?

Unfortunately, outside food and drinks aren’t permitted in Kings Island and Soak City Water Park. The park makes exceptions for individuals with special dietary needs, like food allergies and baby food and formula.

Entertainment at Kings Island

Kings Island isn’t just amusement park rides. The park offers guests several other entertainment options. King’s Island’s shows and other entertainers provide a nice break from the twists and turns of a roller coaster and a chance to sit in the A/C on a hot summer day. From singing groups to fireworks on select nights, Kings Island delivers. Entertainment options have not been announced yet for the 2024 season. We’ll update this section when new information is released.

You can find a schedule of the park’s entertainment options available during your visit in the Kings Island Mobile App.

Kings Island Events

Kings Island has yet to release details on its lineup of special events for the 2024 season. We will update event info as soon as it’s released. The list of 2023 Kings Island events gives you an idea of the type of events you can expect to see at Kings Island this season.

  • Grand Carnivale
  • Halloween Haunt
  • Tricks and Treats Fall Fest
  • World’s Largest Swimming Lesson
  • Independence Day Fireworks

Shopping at Kings Island

I begged my parents to buy me souvenirs almost every visit to Kings Island while growing up. I don’t remember if I ever wore them down enough to say yes to my requests, but there are plenty of places for you to get your shopping fix at Kings Island. You can find souvenir shops and other shops scattered throughout the park.

Kings Island Cashless System

Like other Cedar Fair parks, Kings Island operates on a cashless system . Instead of cash, park guests will need to use debit cards, credit cards, or digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. For those who don’t have a card or digital wallet, you can convert cash to a prepaid debit card at Cash-to-Card Kiosks located within the park. Prepaid debit cards from the kiosk require a $5 minimum deposit, and you can add up to $500 to a card. One thing to keep in mind if you choose this option is that you could end up paying fees if you don’t use the card regularly. After 92 days of inactivity, you’ll get charged a $3.95 inactivity fee each month.

VIP Lounge and Premium Dining plan review

I took my 15 year old son and his friend to Kings Island. This was our first time there. Due to the new chaperone policy, I had to stay in the park. I wasn’t going to tag along with them, or ride the rides by myself, so I needed a shady place to hang out. I pre-purchased access to the VIP lounge for $39. I’m glad I did, but probably wouldn’t do it again. First off, this lounge is open air. If it was HOT, it wouldn’t have been a good choice, but due to the 70 degree weather it was perfect. The attendant at the Lounge quickly learned my name and was super helpful. They offered free water and potato chips. There were couches to stretch out on and tables/chairs if one wanted to do work, or bring in their meal. On our way out of the park, I found a huge air conditioned Starbucks that could be used to get away from the sun/heat for next time instead. The lounge is just too expensive and doesn’t offer air conditioning. We pre-purchased the Premium Dining plan because it came with drinks. The biggest disappointment about this plan is that (from what I found) you have to know exactly what food is available before you order it. There aren’t any signs, and the workers aren’t sure. There is a listing of the premium plan food options on the website in the FAQ page? I couldn’t find it in the app. So we took screen shots of the page so we knew what we could order. The Premium Plan is VERY limited! Only a couple things per restaurant. And you can only use it every 90 minutes. You needed to be strategic about using it. It was nice not having to carry around a credit card….since the cashiers just scanned our bracelets, but I wouldn’t purchase this again.

Horrible service in Soak City with Cabana rental. We spent $250 to rent a cabana for the day. Fan didn’t work. TV in cabana was all fuzzy with poor reception and no remote. Cabana was supposed to come with food ordering service. Park was understaffed and after several minutes we were told to order food at a cash register near the entrance to the cabana. After an hour, food had not been delivered. One of the staff members went to check in and she said we were the next up order. Then 40 minutes later it still didn’t arrive. I called Guest Services which is a joke and 15 min on hold with no one answering. So I walked up to Guest Services and explained I wanted a good refund and a cabana refund. More standing and waiting and another 5 staff kids, one empowered to do anything, until their manager’s manager finally showed up. They gave me the food refund and I asked also for a cabana refund since I had spent 2 hours on this entire ordeal trying to order and then track down food. Karrie; the head of food service, asked if I was enjoying my cabana. I said no because we haven’t been able to leave it or find the food. She was a real rude manager (and the only adult in this situation). I asked for a full refund again. All they would do is give a full refund and kick us out for the day. What a waste. What a complete waste of time and expertise. Kings Island is no Disney. Don’t waste your time on any perks or upgrades. The service is non existent.

Awful. No other way to describe it. Poorly run, outdated, awful atmosphere, small, boring, and lame.

My children frequent King’s Island quite often and we have spent quite a lot of money there over the years, but after this evenings frustrations, I am seriously considering redirecting those funds to some other entertainment venue for them. My son who for the record is 16, did not bring his temps with him because he was going to the amusement park. Typically a responsible decision if you ask me. When he got to the security gate at just after 5 they told him he could not enter without it or an adult. I who was already 20 minutes away and short of half way home, had to turn around to come back and park (oh yes parking is $30 without a pass and although there is a drop off, there is nowhere to park to escort your child through security. Is security combing the park and kicking out 13, 14 and 15 year olds who entered prior to 4PM. No. Hence one reason it’s a stupid rule. Second, what is a 13, 14, or 15 year old going to do that a 16 or 17 year old won’t...The answer is nothing or likely even less. The park I would imagine likely implemented the rule so they can monitor for hoodlums with a basis to kick them out if needed. However, somewhere along the way, some over zealous, power seeking security manager found it necessary to take it to the next level. Basically a rule designed to monitor for unruly, misbehaving kids was blown up. If anyone can shed any sense of logic on it that I seem to be missing, I am all ears. It certainly can’t be good business sense, since the majority of young children visit in the day with their families, leaving more adults and teenagers in the evening hours. Many teenagers whom depend on their working parents to drive and pay for their venture. My kids were not allowed on their own there until 13 either, meaning this rule literally keeps out primarily 13, 14 and 15 year olds after 4PM (except those already in the park of course). King’s Island/Cedar Fair May wonder why sales are declining, paying marketers thousands to unravel the great mystery, when it is literally as simple as common sense. Don’t implement rules that discriminates against one of your primary target markets (i.e. teenagers (PS the ones in extra curriculars and sports are the ones free in the evening and not the day) the ones with working parents). If it weren’t for the the nice lady at parking I’d probably have really lost it instead of just being irritated with security. So thank you for at least one employee demonstrating some inkling of common sense and kindness.

Kings Island was awesome. We took my 9 year old son, 12 year old daughter and niece and nephew. They had a good time we were there from Monday evening to Thursday afternoon. We didn't even want to leave after 4 days! They line weren't long and all the rides were working while we were there. I would definitely recommend this to others.

Horrible experience. People come and reserve the chairs in the morning. Thousands of unoccupied chairs with towels laying across each one. Water park is beyond capacity by 2 pm. If you want to be frustrated and sitting in the grass while your kids wait hours for water slides…come to Kings Island Soak City. Horrible.

The VIP Lounge at Kings Island is located across from Enrique’s restaurant by Tower Gardens. CONTRIBUTED/KINGS ISLAND

Kings Island amusement park in Warren County announced today its new VIP Lounge opens Friday.

The addition is for Prestige and Prestige+ season passholders. The lounge is located across from the new Enrique’s restaurant by Tower Gardens.

It is billed as a “relaxing retreat” from the midways “with all-day access.” It has grab-and-go snacks, shaded lounge seating and other amenities, park officials said.

The Prestige plan is “loaded with perks,” the park says. It includes access to all Cedar Fair amusement and waterparks, a Preferred Parking space, preferred and early entry and access to the VIP area and Water Park VIP area. It also comes with the benefits of two free bring-a-friend tickets annually and one single-use Fast Pass Lane per visit.

Kings Island opened for the current season on April 15.

The park has several major additions this year including Adventure Port, a new themed area located between Coney Mall and Action Zone with two new family rides. Also new is Grain & Grill, a fast-casual dining option on International Street featuring Mediterranean- inspired dishes including Moroccan chicken, glazed pork shoulder, shrimp skewers and seasonal sides.

The new restaurant and all of the park’s food and beverage will be supervised by Executive Chef Joseph Perez, who previously served the Ameristar Casino and Hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

Cedar Fair  Entertainment Company

It’s one of the best and most popular amusement parks in the nation, with an incredible collection of world-class roller coasters and other rides. Ohio’s Kings Island is so famous, noted children’s book author R.L. Stine even wrote about one of its legendary coasters, The Beast–twice! With a great outdoor water park that is included with admission and an onsite Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park and hotel, there are many reasons to visit. Daily tickets start as low as $45 when purchased online. There are discounts available, including an after 4 p.m. admission and season passes to consider.

How Much Are Tickets to Kings Island?

  • Single-day regular (over 48 inches tall, ages 3 to 61): $45 (weekdays) and $54.99 (weekends)
  • Single-day Jr. or Sr. (under 48 inches tall or 62 and older): $45
  • Two-day passes (for ages 3 and older): $80

To receive the prices above, tickets need to be purchased online in advance at the official Web site of Kings Island . Tickets purchased at the gate are $20 to $35 more.

Kings Island is a pay-one-price park. Tickets include admission to the amusement park and Soak City Water Park (when it is open) and all rides and attractions. The park’s fall event, Halloween Haunt, is included with admission. Its holiday event, Winterfest, requires separate admission.

Discount Pricing

After 4 p.m..

As stated above, be sure to purchase tickets in advance online to save on tickets. However, one exception to this rule is the park’s after 4 p.m. discount ticket, which is available at the gate. Be sure to contact the park to make sure the ticket will be available on the day you plan to visit. Also, check how late the park will be open to ensure you will have enough time to enjoy the park.

Season Pass

If you plan on visiting Kings Island at least twice a year, consider purchasing a season pass. In 2021, the cost for a Gold Pass is $130. In addition to unlimited admission, it includes free parking, discounts on food and merchandise, early ride time, early access to Soak City, and other benefits. It also includes Bring-A-Friend discounts, which allow pass holders to purchase up to four additional tickets for $39.99 each. A Platinum Pass, which costs $225 in 2021, tosses in unlimited admission to all parks in the Cedar Fair chain, including Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

Other Kings Island Discounts

  • Members of the military can purchase discounted tickets at $43.
  • Groups of 15 or more can purchase discounted tickets online for $41 each.
  • The grocery store chain, Kroger, offers Kings Island tickets. The stores may have discounts available.
  • aRes Travel offers tickets, including weekday-priced tickets good for admission on weekends.
  • The park has offered a Coaster Combo ticket that combined passes to both Kings Island and Cedar Point for a discounted price. It bundled park passes, parking, Fast Lane passes, dining, and other features into an All-Inclusive ticket. Check with Kings Island to see whether these or other special offers are available.

Plan Your Visit

Kings Island is open seasonally, generally from May to December. It is typically open daily from mid-June through mid-August and on weekends and select weekdays at other times of the year. Saturdays are traditionally the busiest days. Crowds are usually lower early and late in the season. Consider visiting on rainy or overcast days (or days when inclement weather is forecast) for lighter crowds. On very hot and humid days in the heart of the summer, the water park can be quite crowded, leaving the lines for the coasters and other rides in the amusement park shorter–especially in the middle of the day.

On days when wait times are likely to be long for the rides, consider purchasing Fast Lane , the line-skipping pass at Kings Island. It comes in two flavors. Fast Lane lets you bypass the regular lines on 20 attractions, including the coasters Banshee, Diamondback, and The Racer. The higher-priced Fast Lane Plus includes additional rides such as Orion, Mystic Timbers, and The Beast . Costs for the passes vary depending on the day and the anticipated crowd levels.

You can purchase food a la carte at the park’s eateries. Or you could consider purchasing an All Day Dining pass . For $31.99, it includes an entree and a side dish at most restaurants. Pass holders can order food once every 90 minutes throughout the day. The park also offers a souvenir bottle for $13.99 that includes free refills every 15 minutes.

It costs $20 to park in the regular lot and $27 to park in the "Preferred" lot closer to the gate. If you purchase parking online in advance along with admission tickets, you can save $3 on parking.

If you plan on spending a good portion of your day at Soak City, you could consider renting a cabana . They accommodate up to six guests and include two lounge chairs and a lockable storage box; Premium cabanas toss in souvenir towels, a mini-refrigerator stocked with water, and a TV.

Onsite Accommodations

In 2021, Kings Island opened Camp Cedar , a 53-acre luxury lodging and RV resort. It features both RV sites and fully appointed cottages that accommodate up to eight guests. The resort offers packages that include admission to the amusement park and early ride time on select rides.

The Great Wolf Lodge at Kings Island is open year-round. When Kings Island is open, it offers a great way to stay right next to the park. The nicely appointed hotel offers various suites and rooms, a large indoor water park, and other attractions. Water park passes are included with room rates. The water park makes day passes available to the general public as well.

On most days, the $199 will be the better option - park admission and Fast Lane Plus Included.  The $449 you need to pay to get in or have a pass, and only get 6 hours of "Fast Lane" (ie personal tour guide).

Talk about a rip off, $450 and you don’t even get admission, really? I agree the $200 option seems like the better deal by a wide margin. Also, nothing says “All Access VIP” like waiting in hour+ long lines after the tour is done.

Unless VIP area access is important, you're better off only getting one of the bundle package if you have a full car load going.  Not everyone needs to pay for funpix and parking.  May 23rd for example: It's ~$170 for a addmission, fl+, and prem dining.  So basically $30 for VIP access.

I'd imagine this varies by day some, but worth pricing it out if you have a group going and looking to save a few bucks.

It's not unheard of that VIP tours for parks not include park tickets but that is Disney. Not to downplay Kings Island as a quality park as it definitely is but the incentives are not compelling enough for me to really recommend this. For me all you need is a Fast pass and Meal Plan for a great day.

There is now an option for access to the VIP Lounge for the day.  Think we might try this once this summer.

Outdoors, chips and drinks only. It didn’t look worthy of $40 pp to me

I think it works well for the non-passholder or a family that comes with a member that doesn't ride rides.  Certainly cheaper and longer experience than the Winterfest Igloos.

:P

LOL - There REALLY hd to have been a better place to have done this. I mean - where they did it was EASY, and probably should've been just a 50th patio bar with the 50 drinks and a few easy 50 food items, then done a real VIP lounge someplace indoor/outdoor with patio access. It might've been more expensive to have gone that route, but would've been a neat, long term investment.

I don't think the packages are selling. I've yet to see anyone in the VIP lounge.

Imperial79

Maybe if they added some things from Soak City to it, it would entice more people to buy it.

NegativeGs

I walked past the VIP area at CP many times last year. I don't recall seeing many people enjoying it. For me, amusement parks are about exhilaration. If you want to feel important, buy yourself FL+ and enjoy.

MeredithGrey

The whole "you'll walk around with a tour guide" thing isn't for me... I guess that's more for enthusiasts that are really into the inner workings of the park? (Like, maybe you could ask - "what's behind that fence?" and your "tour guide" will tell you what's "behind the curtain"? lol ) But having worked at the park before, still, it doesn't do anything for me lol

14 hours ago, NegativeGs said: I walked past the VIP area at CP many times last year. I don't recall seeing many people enjoying it. For me, amusement parks are about exhilaration. If you want to feel important, buy yourself FL+ and enjoy.

Yeah, I'm not going to pay a bunch of money to go an amusement park and deal with travelling there only to pay even more money for the right to sit on some comfy seats instead of heading to the next attraction. Doesn't even have AC or a good view. I suppose there are those people who need a rest now and then at the park but the difference between the lounge and any random bench would be hard to justify for anyone who isn't rich.

Wasn't CPs VIP given away to random people, or did they have a purchase option also?

It is interesting, set up an igloo for a what at most 5-6 hour Winterfest night and charge a lot of money and they sell out in advance for almost every night.

Set up a VIP area for a lot less money for a 10 hour operating day and barely anyone uses it.

I say give it time.  We are still early in the season and I suspect we will see more use late June and thru July as more non-passholders come to the park.

I don’t get the appeal of the VIP lounge.  The fountain area of International Street is peaceful and beautiful and perfect for taking a break.    The VIP area is  similar to a wedding tent.     Is the appeal that one paid for access?

$449 for a tour without admission  is outrageous.  Especially considering the probably pay the tour guide $20/hour at most.   Plus this seems to be yet another level of Fast Lane on top of thst program already slowing lines down since they get immediate access.   Although there won’t be much participation, it’s something else to slow operations.

What I get from this is that Cedar Fair underprices their season passes and especially dining plans enough that they have to dream up unnecessary ideas to squeeze more revenue.     Instead of focusing on the best operations possible to warrant higher season pass prices.   I would gladly pay more for a season pass if the park was better run overall for every customer Instead of wasting resources on these upcharge gimmicks

I saw the other day that the special pricing for season passes had been extended... I believe the deal was only supposed to last around Memorial Day, but the site said it was extended...

I'm wondering if this means that they didn't sell as many passes as they expected? Or do they always say "this deal only lasts until Memorial Day"... and then extend it anyway?

And now the special VIP experiences are being offered, so the connection I'm making here... less revenue than they expected from the passes, perhaps? Anyone else thinking something similar?

They pretty much always extend. It’s that old marketing technique of “false close” to try to create urgency, knowing there’s still plenty of time to catch a few more.

Nope that is their typical marketing ploy.

Pre-pandemic 2019 was a record year for Cedar Fair and year to date, this year is way better financially than 2019.

As a chain, Cedar Fair is reporting record revenue.  Revenue is up 21% thru Memorial Day compared to pre-pandemic 2019, despite 14 fewer operating days in 2022 compared to 2019...Season pass sales up 24% and season pass add-ons up 46% compared to same period in 2019, and a 28% increase in in-park per capita spending  - all records for the chain.

That is the patio behind/side of Brewhouse.

Thanks

My wife and I love to eat out there when ordering at Brewhouse.

That spot has been my sanctuary when trying to keep up with my teenager who runs me into the ground when we go. After a riding for awhile, a good beer and comfy chair under the Diamondback lift hill is needed...ha!

Kings Island emerges from pandemic resilient, ready to build on 50-year legacy

Kings Island is emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic resilient and ready to build on its five-decade legacy

The park recently marked its birthday with a daylong celebration ahead of what is expected to be a busy 2022. Richard Zimmerman, president and CEO of Kings Island parent company Cedar Fair, told this news outlet that during the pandemic, people ending up buying things, but now that is shifting to people getting out and doing things.

Plans are in motion for Kings Island’s next several seasons, but the park won’t announce until mid- to late August what it’s store for the 2023 season, Zimmerman said.

“We’ve got plans for next year and beyond,” he said. “Most times in our planning cycle we’re working two to three years out.”

When Kings Island does have a new ride to announce, it typically hints at the nature of the attraction on social media and at the park for several months within a season, announce it at a fan-filled summertime gathering and then unveil it for the world the next season.

That’s a formula employed to whet the thrill-seeking appetites of coaster enthusiasts, but one likely not employed this season coming out of the pandemic.

Based on preliminary results for the four-month period ending May 1, Cedar Fair recorded record net revenues of $193 million driven by strong attendance trends, continued record levels of in-park per capita spending, and improved out-of-park revenues, Cedar Fair said on Wednesday. Those preliminary results represent a 33%, or approximately $48 million, increase in net revenues compared with the four-month period ended May 5, 2019, which Cedar Fair said was the most recent comparable period when parks operated without COVID-19 disruption.

“This record 4-month performance was driven by continued strength in demand and guest spending across all key revenue channels,” Zimmerman said. “These are encouraging signs heading into the busy summer season when all 13 of our properties will be open and operating without restrictions for the first time since 2019.”

Early sales of season passes and other all-season products pacing well ahead of pre-pandemic level. However, first-quarter results for Cedar Fair have historically represented less than 5% of the company’s full-year net revenues as most parks and facilities are closed during the first quarter.

Due to Cedar Fair’s outstanding recent performance, it has accelerated its post-pandemic recovery and is on pace to outperform its 2019 operating results. The momentum that fueled its record first quarter revenues continued through April and is likely to stretch throughout the season at the Warren County amusement park, Zimmerman said.

“We think Kings Island will have a tremendous 50th anniversary year,” he said. “There’s so many special things planned for this summer.”

The Golden Celebration, a summer-long event starting Memorial Day weekend, will feature brand new entertainment highlighting special moments from the Kings Island’s first 50 years, culinary dishes created especially for the Golden Anniversary year and the opportunity to dance the night away at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

The park said the event is planned to include a “stunning, one-of-a-kind, immersive fireworks finale featuring thrilling and heartwarming moments from the park’s first 50 years.”

Kings Island’s next big rides, whenever they are announced, likely will incorporate as much immersive, experiential technology as possible, according to Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services, which has worked on more than 500 projects in 55 countries.

“If you could go forward 20 years and look back ... you’d see that technology has taken over our industry,” Speigel said. “The evolution of technology has been so monumental over the last 10 years, that things that are out there that can be done and brought to theme parks from Disney to the smallest mom-and-pop (operation) are amazing.”

Coming June 4 will be Phantom Theater Encore! at Kings Island Theater, where once again the Maestro and his troupe of ghoulish thespians will perform what Kings Island says will be a “spooky, zany, whimsical production that’s filled with toe-tapping music, laugh-out-loud comedy, and mystifying illusions that are sure to amaze.”

The amusement park also will launch its 2022 Concert Series , offering the most summer concerts at Timberwolf Amphitheatre since 1995.

For the first time, Kings Island will not require concertgoers to also purchase admission to the amusement park. Concert tickets will be available to the general public and will include free parking after 5 p.m. and an exclusive entrance to Timberwolf before each show begins.

Also coming soon to Kings Island will be two all-new VIP experiences. One offering is a Premium VIP Bundle, an all-inclusive experience where guests set the pace. It includes single-day admission, plus preferred parking, a Fast Lane Plus wristband, the All-Day Dining Premium package including a drink wristband, All Day FunPix and All Day Access to the exclusive VIP Lounge, which includes complimentary snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, lockers and other amenities.

While not offering park admission, an All Access VIP Tour will include a six-hour guided tour led by a Kings Island ambassador, which includes immediate boarding on all Kings Island attractions (excluding Soak City), plus preferred parking and the same All Day add ons available with the aforementioned Premium VIP Bundle. In addition, the tour also will offer a complimentary ride photo print and reserved seating at select restaurants and shows.

With inflation continuing to rise and new rides coming on board in the past several years, including giga coaster Orion in summer 2020, Kings Island pricing also has increased. The price of a season pass went from $132 in spring 2018 to $135 this spring, a 2% increase.

“ That’s a remarkable value, especially when considering we extended Kings Island’s season by adding on WinterFest in 2017,” said Kings Island spokesman Chad Showalter.

Admission price varies throughout the year and the best place to purchase tickets to Kings Island is on its website www.visitkingsisland.com in advance of visit, Showalter said.

“Right now tickets are available for as low as $45 when you purchase them online,” he said. “That’s consistent with pricing over the last several seasons.”

5 things to know about Kings Island as it opens this week

Apr. 15—Kings Island is opening for the its 52nd season on Saturday, and there are some new attractions of note.

Through the past five decades, the park has changed a lot, and this year is no different. Here are five things patrons of the popular amusement park in Warren County should know:

1. The park will be letting guests in 30 minutes before opening

The park has confirmed the schedule for its season opening date. Parking booths will open at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the front gates opening 30 minutes later. Lining up at the park's entrance, guests may wait there until the park's official opening at 10 a.m.

2. Camp Snoopy, with a new ride, opens later this season

Possibly the biggest piece of news to come out of Kings Island recently was the announcement of Camp Snoopy, an expansion of the parks award-winning Planet Snoopy area. Taking up an existing portion of Planet Snoopy, several existing rides have been updated to fit the new area's camping theme. There will also be a new children's play area and dining location.

The largest addition coming to the area is Snoopy's Soap Box Racers, a family rollercoaster created by Vekoma. The ride will take guests forward and backward in cars themed for various Peanuts characters. While the park has been making progress on the new area, its attractions will not be ready by Saturday. The park has not confirmed an opening date for Camp Snoopy yet, simply saying "late spring."

3. Season pass offers are changed

For a number of years, Kings Island has offered a season pass for guests who want to return throughout the whole season. For this year, however, Kings Island parent company Cedar Fair decided to make some changes. While the traditional "Gold Pass" option is still available to guests for $145, the park now has a "Silver Pass" option. For $110, guests will be able to use the pass any operating day before Labor Day. This means that those with the silver pass will not have access to the park's popular "Halloween Haunt" or "Winterfest" events.

For those who want even more from their season are able to get a "Prestige Pass." This pass has all the same perks as the gold pass, but guests also have access to a special VIP area and preferred parking. Prestige passes can be purchased for $350.

As with previous years, guests are able to purchase add-ons for their season passes such as a dining plan and line-skipping "Fast Lanes." However, guests are now able to add-on the "All Park Passport." This gives guests unlimited visits to all other Cedar Fair parks, like Cedar Point and Canada's Wonderland. This is similar to the "Platinum Pass" that Cedar Fair had offered in years past.

4. Kings Island is celebrating ride anniversaries with opening day trading cards

This year, Kings Island will be celebrating the anniversaries of several important attractions in the park. The park's legendary wooden coaster, The Beast will be celebrating its 45th anniversary. The ride opened in 1979 and was the longest roller coaster in the world until The Ultimate opened in the UK in 1991 (the title has changed numerous times since then.) The Beast currently remains the longest wooden roller coaster in the world at more than 7,361 feet. That's nearly two miles long.

The park is also celebrating the 25th birthday of the inverted coaster Invertigo, the 15th anniversary of Diamondback and Banshee's 10th birthday. To celebrate these anniversaries, the park will be giving the first 750 riders of each coaster a special trading card pack. According to the park's blog "These trading cards will include current rides, former rides and key moments in Kings Island history that occurred anywhere from 5 to 55 years ago. While many cards will be similar, there are a couple unique cards in each coaster's giveaway packs, such as special coaster anniversary cards, so plan your rides carefully." There will also be extra card packs available to purchase at the park's gift shops.

5. Season pass holders get a special treat before opening

As previously mentioned, the Bolliger & Mabillard inverted coaster Banshee will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024. The rides is over 4,124 feet long and is the longest inverted roller coaster in the world. The ride sits on what was previously the land occupied by the park's troubled Son of Beast roller coaster. That ride was closed in 2009 and was torn down in 2012, making way for Banshee to open 2 years later.

The ride is themed to the screeching spirit of the same name, and guests can even hear her howl as they come down the lift hill. Kings Island is no stranger to ghost stories and paranormal activity, even appearing on an episode of Ghost Hunters in 2012. So while it has never been confirmed by the park, it is possible the theme was chosen to celebrate the haunted history of the park.

Regardless of whether its haunted or not, Banshee has given guests plenty reason to scream over during its first 10 years. To celebrate this, the park is allowing season pass holders to ride the attraction 30 minutes before the park opens, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Things To Do

Theater + arts, theater + arts | review: want some advice see ‘tiny, beautiful things’ at anaheim’s chance theater.

kings island vip tour

Enter Chance Theater’s mainstage right now and you encounter a  welcoming home. Bathed in beatific amber lighting sits a sizable, well-appointed kitchen and island, an intimate dining space, a pleasingly stuffed bookcase against the wall and a comfy multi-piece sectional couch set.

Why, whoever is lucky enough to live here surely must not have a care in the world.

Fortunately for those experiencing the emotionally affecting single act play “Tiny, Beautiful Things,” that’s not the case.

The woman who resides here has a multitude of modern life concerns and, a bit inexplicably to herself, has chosen to address the similar challenges that are vexing thousands of others.

“Tiny,  Beautiful Things” is based on nonfiction writer Cheryl Strayed’s anonymously written — and unpaid for — online advice columns, written a decade or so ago under the anonymous pseudonym of “Dear Sugar.”

The center of the action is her inbox.  Correspondents stampede her with their e-mailed what-to-do questions, increasingly drawn in by her empathetic answers which are nonjudgmental and personally confessional.

The key to Sugar’s appeal is her lack of self-pity and her universally relevant revelations about personal drug addictions, a failed marriage and the hollowness she feels about her own life.

Like-minded readers can relate as she establishes a degree of conversational intimacy far from the impersonal, imperious judgements rendered across the decades by the Dear Abby ilk.

This play, however, isn’t some self-indulgent weep fest.

The emotional array of subjects ranges goes beyond the usual self-help fallouts of family fights, unfulfilling marriages and social loneliness. Reader “Sexy Santa,” for instance, wonders if he should deliver more than just presents; Sugar saucily suggests a stocking stuffer is in order.

The play was conceived by actress Nia Vardalos (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”), who starred as the central character in the original 2016 New York production directed by Thomas Kail (the year following his Tony-winning work on “Hamilton”).

The show’s construction is a model of efficiency and Chance’s director for this production, Katie Chidester, employs non-fussy staging that doesn’t call attention to itself, but keeps her four actors as the focal points.

Prominent among them is Aubrey Saverino, who carries the dominating role as Sugar with confidence and winning aplomb. Among Chance’s loosely knit repertory of acting talent, Saverino has emerged as something of a local star of the moment.

Her acting chops for bringing depth to characters and bright-eyed engagement with material have been on recent display in Chance’s 2022’s production of “Cry It Out” and, especially, her bravura, solo turn in “Matinicus: The Story of Abigail Burgess.”

Three other able performers — Chance veterans Jonathon Lamer and Jennifer Richardson, with newcomer Sam Mistry — are the letter writers who inhabit Sugar’s environment, engaging her in dialogue as the Q&A verbal interchanges develop throughout the home (for instance, the four briefly congregate about the kitchen island constructing PB&J school lunch sandwiches for Sugar’s unseen kids).

Kristin Campbell Coyne earns her credit for that atmospheric scenic design; in her program note she effusively praises Teddy Pagee as her assistant scenic designer. Jordan “L.J.” Guriel provides the embracing lighting design.

Sugar’s give and take with her public following reaches its apex near the play’s end after she receives a stark, devastating reach-out from “Living Dead Dad.”

Desolate in the wake of his son’s death by a drunken driver, the character, voiced by Lamer, doesn’t have a specific question, but bleakly lays out 24 bullet point laments which deaden and now define his own existence.

As Sugar responds, with heart-rending empathy, to each of these 24 salvos, Lamer slowly approaches Saverino. She locks eyes with him, offering a gaze that seems to establish solidarity with not just his pain, but his sheer humanity.

Often, perhaps, the best advice can be found beyond words.

Horse for the course: pga dfs course history - 2024 rbc heritage.

kings island vip tour

The year's first major championship is officially in the books. It's no surprise that World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is leaving Augusta wearing a green jacket, as the big Texan won his second Masters title last week in a rather dominant fashion. It was his third win in his last four starts and I'm honestly running out of superlatives to describe what Scottie is doing at the moment.

While there's some natural letdown after the Masters, I'm a big fan of this week's event, the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town.

Horse For The Course is an article that highlights players in this week's field with elite course history and is part of our free PGA DFS content here at RotoBaller. 2024 RBC Heritage

The annual spot on the schedule the week following the Masters could be a huge detriment for many events, but the RBC Heritage has not only survived but thrived, as the traditional follow-up to the year's first major championship. The Heritage has a bit of a home-field advantage, as its scenic locale of Hilton Head Island provides a tremendous environment for the pros - and their families - to decompress following the stresses of Augusta National. It also doesn't hurt that everyone in this week's field will receive a guaranteed payday courtesy of the PGA Tour's Signature Event designation.

There's a lot to love about Hilton Head, but this Harbour Town layout happens to be one of the most unique golf courses on the PGA Tour schedule. In a rare change from most Tour stops, distance and power off the tee give players basically no advantage on this Pete Dye design that's withstood the test of time. We're going "old school" this week...accuracy off the tee, precise iron play, and a great short game will all be required at Harbour Town. I love it when a golf course has some character!

While the RBC Heritage has traditionally attracted a rock-solid field, for the second consecutive year it has been deemed a Signature Event, which means we have an elite crop of golfers teeing it up at Harbour Town again this season, who will look to unseat defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick. This will be a limited field with no 36-hole cut, a wrinkle that should certainly be top of mind when constructing DFS lineups this week.

The Course: Harbour Town Golf Links

Par 71 - 7,121 Yards, Greens: Bermuda, Designed By: Pete Dye

This Pete Dye beauty is one of the shortest layouts these pros will face all year. Its lack of length is a refreshing change of pace from the stretched-to-the-max layouts that we routinely see on the PGA Tour schedule. While it may lack length, Harbour Town is by no means a pushover. Very tight, tree-lined fairways often take drivers out of the players' hands, forcing them to play strategically off the tee.

In true Dye fashion, this is a second-shot golf course and players will be aiming for minuscule greens that routinely grade out as some of the toughest to hit on the PGA Tour schedule. These factors make me give almost no weight to the bombers this week and I'll instead be focusing on players that are precise off the tee and accurate on approach.

Other than Pebble Beach, this course has the smallest greens on the PGA Tour schedule, so while it's an area that often goes overlooked in our PGA DFS corner of the world, I'll also be giving weight to around the green ability this week. Harbour Town is slightly similar to Augusta National in that we often see the same players perform well here every year, while first-timers can struggle, so I'm giving an even bigger bump than normal to players with strong course history.

Recent RBC Heritage Winners

  • 2023: Matt Fitzpatrick (-17)
  • 2022: Jordan Spieth (-13)
  • 2021: Stewart Cink (-19)
  • 2020: Webb Simpson (-22)
  • 2019: CT Pan (-12)

Patrick Cantlay

kings island vip tour

Besides his slow play, Cantlay's calling card has long been his consistency. The Californian has logged 33 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since the 2020-21 season, which trails only Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy. However, Cantlay hasn't yet been as bankable in 2024, recording just a single top-10 (Genesis) across his eight starts this year while largely struggling with his irons.

He teed it up for the first time in nearly a month last week at the Masters and there were certainly some positives to take away from his T22 result at Augusta, as his ball-striking output was statistically the best it had been since that aforementioned top-10 effort at Riviera. There's good reason to believe the UCLA alum can carry that momentum to Harbour Town this week. Cantlay has been a stud in previous trips to Hilton Head, coming oh-so-close to wins and recording four top-three finishes in his six career RBC Heritage starts.

Tommy Fleetwood

kings island vip tour

I've long maintained that Fleetwood's first victory on U.S. soil would come at Harbour Town and I refuse to back down. This could be the week for Tommy Lad, who comes in off a never-in-contention T3 in the Masters in what was an encouraging - and relatively stress-free - performance.

His success at Augusta comes on the heels of a T7 two weeks ago at Valero, an event in which he gained an eye-opening 10.6 strokes T2G thanks to elite work with the irons. After what's been an otherwise ho-hum start to 2024, the Englishman's game appears to be humming just as he heads to a tight Harbour Town layout that's well-suited to his strengths. Fleetwood has produced three top-25 results in four career RBC Heritage attempts. Let's get that breakthrough win this week!

Matt Fitzpatrick

kings island vip tour

The defending Heritage champion's love for Harbour Town is well documented. Fitzpatrick and his family used to vacation on Hilton Head Island, which appears to have bolstered his affinity for the area. It also doesn't hurt that this classic Dye layout is the ideal track for the 2022 U.S. Open champion.

Fitzy is yet another player in what seems to be a trendline for this week's article: traditionally consistent, wobbly start to the year, showing some recent form, and possessing great course history. Something appears to have clicked for the Englishman recently (perhaps the discovery of a long-forgotten practice weight in his driver?), as a top-five at THE PLAYERS gave way to a T10 at Valero and a solid T22 last week in the Masters. His recent spike in form should help bolster his confidence for a defense of the RBC Heritage title this week.

J.T. Poston

kings island vip tour

There are more consistent Harbour Town performers than J.T. Poston - who has missed the cut in two of his last three Heritage starts. However, The Postman has also delivered high-quality performances in Hilton Head, scoring dazzling finishes of T3, T6, & T8 in this event since 2018. While a perfect track record would be nice, I'm willing to risk the volatility - especially in this week's no-cut format - in exchange for the sort of upside that can help us win a GPP.

After closing out 2023 in strong fashion, Poston came charging out of the gates in 2024 by logging a pair of top-five finishes in Hawaii and three top-20s during the West Coast Swing, including a T10 at Riviera. Unfortunately, the Carolina native hit some hard times in Florida with a T45 at TPC Sawgrass standing as his best finish in three Sunshine State outings. However, a T30 outing last week in the Masters is encouraging and Poston has now gained strokes on Approach in his last two starts.

Cameron Davis

kings island vip tour

After battling some illness issues in early 2023, it looked as though Cameron Davis was primed for a big 2024 after logging top-12 finishes in six of his final seven starts last year. It hasn't happened yet, as the Aussie has been up and down over the first three-plus months of the season with a T18 at Bay Hill standing as his best performance of the season prior to last week's Masters.

Perhaps a T12 at Augusta last week is the spark that kickstarts Davis for the rest of the year? The irons were firing last week (+1.16 TSG Approach) and his Heritage track record is sneaky, sneaky great. After logging a T25 in his Heritage debut in 2021, Davis has gone on to post finishes of T3-T7 in two subsequent trips to Hilton Head. His strokes gained vs. expectation at Harbour Town is over two shots (+2.20) better than his baseline, which stands as the best mark in this week's Heritage field.
