Tour 2022: Voorbeschouwing favorieten bergklassement

Vicente Trueba Maar goed, we dwalen af.

World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

From the 1st to the 24th of July the peloton will be in the roads of France, Denmark and Switzerland for the 109th edition of the Tour de France . The most iconic, popular and one of the most important races for most of the riders and teams, who will be fighting for meaningful wins over the course of three weeks.

Over the course of the three weeks there will be several classifications that the riders will be fighting for. The General Classification will see the race's best stage-racers go head to head on every single stage as they attempt to take time on each other - specially in the mountains, as will the Youth Classification contenders. In the Points Classification, the sprinters will go head to head in the bunch sprints, aswell as the intermediate sprints spread throughout the 19 road stages. As for the King of the Mountain Classification, it will be decided in the race's highest mountains, toughest Alpine and Pyrenean passes between those who go over them first.

You can check the profile and details of every stage here , the updated startlist with all the names expected to be in the race here , and the prize money that will be distributed between all teams here .

General Classification battle

The preliminary startlist will see general classification contenders as follows: Ben O'Connor, Rigoberto Urán, Damiano Caruso, Jack Haig, Jakob Fuglsang, Michael Woods, Giulio Ciccone, Louis Meintjes, Daniel Martínez, Adam Yates, Geraint Thomas, Aleksandr Vlasov, Alexey Lutsenko, Primoz Roglic , Jonas Vingegaard , Tadej Pogacar , David Gaudu, Guillaume Martin, Enric Mas and Nairo Quintana.

Important Stages

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

The fifth stage is a highly antecipated day. A short stage with only 153 kilometers on the menu, however 19.4 of those will take place over cobbled roads. 11 sectors to be exact, all of which in the second half of the stage. It will be an important day for the overall classification, as the tension will rise to an all-time high and crucial losses can be had if something goes wrong.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

Stage seven will have the riders race into the Vosges. As is traditional the Planche des Belles Filles (7Km; 8.7%) will be the first real summit finish of the race. It will be the first opportunity for the climbers to make differences in their terrain, and will be a good gauge to measure who will be capable of fighting for the win and podium in the end.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

Stage 11 will see the first big high-mountain stage. The menu isn’t complicated, with the Lacets de Montvernier (3.4Km; 8.2%), Col du Telegraphe (11.9Km; 7.1%) and Col du Galibier (17.7Km; 6.9%) taking the riders through high altitude. It will be a brutal day, as the riders will descend into Briançon and climb the Col du Granon (11.3Km; 9.2%) for the highest stage finish in the race.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

Stage 12 will be the final in the Alps, as a hattrick of ascents will mark the day. The riders will early on climb the Col du Galibier (23Km; 5.1%) via the opposite direction, followed by the Col de la Croix the Fer (29Km; 5.2%), and the return of the Alpe d’Huez (13.8Km; 7.9%) for the stage finish.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

Stage 17 will have a pan-flat first half, and a very hard second half. A very short stage with only 129 kilometers on the menu, however featuring the Col d’Aspin (12Km; 6.5%), the Hourquette d’Ancizan (8.2Km; 5%) and the Col de Val Louron-Azet (10.7Km; 7.7%) before the final climb. That will be into Peyragudes (8Km; 7.2%), where more gaps will be established, with the finale in the brutal ramps of the local airfield.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

The final mountain day comes right after. The formula is exactly the same as the day before, with a flat first half, short distances and a combination of similar climbs in the second half with a summit finish. Here however they will be longer, with the Col de Aubisque (16.4Km; 7.1%) opening things up for the day, the Col de Spandelles (10.3Km; 8.3%) dealing further damage and then the summit finish at Hautacam (13.6Km; 7.8%) being the last ascent where the climbers can do real differences.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

The final time-trial of the race will come on it’s penultimate day. The 40.7-kilometer individual challenge will be ridden between Lacapelle-Marival and Rocamadour, a rolling time-trial which is far from ideal for the specialists, with a hilly finale. Rocamadour is no stranger to high-level pro races, and the final hilltop is a familiar sight, albeit with added importance on this day.

The two first bunch sprints will come in Denmark, after the initial time-trial. The cities of Nyborg and Sønderborg will host the finales, although tension will be sky-high and the second stage is particularly vulnerable to crosswinds.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

In the fourth day of racing the peloton returns to familiar French roads. This will be a day for the sprintes, however it includes quite a few hilltops throughout the day that may spark some surprises in northwestern France.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

Stage 13 will have the peloton travel from the Alps into the Massif Central. A day for the sprinters, likely, however a lot can happen and besides the possibility of a breakaway succeeding, the several rolling hills will provide platforms for attacks to surge.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

The final day of the second week will see the riders travel south, from Rodez into Carcassonne. It is another day designed for the sprinters however with plenty obstacles that may see a surprise pop out.

Preview: Tour de France. World's best climbers and sprinters go head to head in a seasonal climax

Stage 19 will be a transition day, as the riders head north for a flat stage. It is a day on paper for the sprinters, however this late into the race it will always be more complicated to chase down breakaways.

Climbs of the 2022 Tour de France

We also have a separate article with lots of information about all the stages of the 2022 Tour de France which you can access here . If you are planning on watching the Tour de France by the roadside for the first time you can see our tips for watching it in person.

Our site also has plenty of information about visiting France for a cycling holiday, so make sure you check it out. The Practical section has all the necessary information about things like visa requirements, using your mobile phone, how to get money out etc while our Destination section includes information about where to stay and how to get to various cycling destinations as well as cycling routes for you to ride.

A brief history of the mountains in the Tour de France

In most editions of the Tour de France, the mountain stages are where the race is won or lost. A single bad day for a rider in the mountains can see them lose minutes to rivals and an end to their title bid. On long mountain climbs, there is nowhere to hide and any little chinks in a rider’s armor are usually found out. Over the years climbs such as Alpe d’Huez, Col du Galibier, Mont Ventoux, Col du Tourmalet and Col d’Aubisque have become synonymous with the race.

The mountain stages are some of the most popular for people to watch the race and there are many iconic images of riders navigating a sea of spectators. It is estimated that many hundreds of thousands of fans line the mountain roads as they twist and turn their way to the summit. On rare occasions, fans get a little too close and bring a rider down.

Large bike sculptures at the top of the Col d'Aubisque

First mountain stage in the Pyrenees

The mountains first entered the Tour de France in the 8th edition in 1910. In that year stage 10 started in the Pyrenean town of Bagneres de Luchon and climbed Col du Peyresourde, Col d’Aspin, Col du Tourmalet and Col d’Aubisque before finishing 326km later in Bayon. Octave Lapize finished the stage first in a time of 14hrs 10mins. No mean feat given that all the mountain passes were dirt roads back in those days and the bikes had nowhere near the range of gears modern bikes now have.

Inclusion of the French Alps

While the organizers deemed the addition of the mountains to be successful the riders were less impressed and there were protests in 1910 about the stage. Nevertheless, in 1911 the French Alps were added to the race with the inclusion of Col du Galibier, Col de Castillion, and Col de Braus. This was in addition to the stage in the Pyrenees.

Since those early days, both the Pyrenees and French Alps have featured in the race annually. In later years climbs in other regions such as the Jura, the Vosges, and the Massif Central have been added to the race. The Pyrenees and French Alps have generally taken turns in being featured in the all-important last week of the race. In 2021 it is the Pyrenees that will close out the mountain stages for this edition of the race.

2022 Tour de France climb stats

The 2022 Tour de France includes 11 stages with categorized climbs, five of which includes a summit finish; Stage 7 La Super Planche de Belle Filles, Stage 11 Col du Granon, Stage 12 Alpe d’Huez, Stage 17 Peyragudes, and Stage 18 Hautacam. The race includes 25 categorized climbs on 24 different mountains with Col du Galibier being climbed twice by the riders over consecutive days.

There are four climbs over 2,000m in the 2022 Tour de France with the highest being Col du Galibier at 2,642m (climbed twice), followed by Col du Granon at 2,413m and Alpe d’Huez at 2,067m. The longest climb is the climb to Col de la Croix de Fer from St Jean de Maurienne which is 29km at an average gradient of 5.2%. The shortest climb on the 2022 Tour de France is the first categorized climb, Côte de Pulventeux, which averages 12.3% for 800m on stage 6.

At the time of putting this table together, there is some information not yet publicly released by ASO about the route, which means there may be some blanks in the table. As it becomes available we will include it so be sure to check back.

Categorization of Tour de France climbs

Each of the climbs is given a categorization which is an indication of the difficulty of the climb. Hors category (HC) are the toughest climbs followed by category 1, category 2, category 3, and category 4. A category 1 climb will be harder than a category 3 climb so the lower the number the harder the climb. A climb can change categorization based on how far into a stage it might be. For example, a climb could be considered a category 2 climb if it comes early on in the stage when riders have fresh legs, or a category 1 climb if it comes towards the end.

The climb categorization also comes into play when awarding points in the Polka Dot jersey competition. For example on an HC climb the first rider over the top will be awarded 20 points while on a category 4 climb the first rider will be awarded 1 point. On an HC climb points are awarded for the first 8 riders while on a category 4 climb only the top rider receives any points. There is a sliding scale of points and positions between HC and category 4.

Planning your own cycling holiday to France

We have written guides on the Best base for cycling in the Pyrenees and Where to stay in the French Alps with lots of information about these two areas. Our Destination guide page has more detailed information about The Pyrenees, The French Alps, The Alpes Maritimes, The Jura, and Provence and Luberon.

We also have lists of cycle hotels , airline luggage rules , cycle tour companies , and bike travel cases to help you plan your trip.

Scandal To Sensation: The Fall of Rabobank

The mountains return to the forefront during the 109th edition of the Tour de France, celebrating its grand départ on Friday, July 1st. The 176 riders taking the starting line will face six mountain stages, with 5 summit finishes throughout the 3,329 km trek around France. FloBikes break each mountain stage down, looking at the historic battles fought and the expectations of what is to come.

Stage 7: Tomblaine – La Super Planche Des Belles Filles, 176 KM

After its debut in 2012, Tomblaine will be welcoming the Tour for the third time as the riders embark to reach the first summit finish of the 2022 Tour. The first half of the stage is relatively flat, allowing the legs to warm up and recover from the first week of racing. The first categorized climb occurs after the one and only intermediate sprint of the day. They hit the 3.1km Col de Grosse Pierre soon after, a category 3 climb that reaches 955m in altitude and peaks at 6.4% gradient.

Following a quick descent and a few bumps along the way, the next climb is another category 3. The 3.2 km climb peaks near the same gradient at 6.3%. These two climbs will act as a warm up for the final 7 kilometer-long climb of La Super Planche Des Belles Filles.

This summit finish, nicknamed, “the little Alpe d’Huez,” was made famous in 2020, when Tadej Pogačar overturned the GC lead in a dramatic time trial battle against Primoz Roglič. He would go on to celebrate becoming the youngest champion to ever win the yellow jersey in Paris. Other notable riders in the peloton will be Thibaut Pinot, who calls the town home and Chris Froome, remembering when he celebrated his first Tour stage win here in 2012, one year before his first overall victory.

The 8.7% gradient climb is not expected to create much gaps this time around, but rather show racing fans who are in form and prepared to tackle the big feats ahead.

Stage 9: Aigle – Châtel Les Portes Du Soleil, 192.9 KM

After a brief respite on stage 8, the mountains will call once again, for the first major test of the mountain goats in the peloton. After starting in Aigle, the capital of cycling where the UCI calls home, the course will begin its upward trajectory with a category 4 climb. Following an intermediate sprint, allowing the fast men some points before establishing the grupetto, the climbing continues on the category 2, 13.3km Col des Mosses. Following a quick dipping descent, it is back up again, this time for 8.1km Col de la Croix, a category 1 mountain.

If the first two climbs hadn't shocked the legs enough, the Tour organizers threw in one last category 1 about 10km before the finish – the 15.4km Pas de Morgins at 1,377m in altitude. The Tour first stopped here in 1975, when Lucien Van Impe won the stage wearing the mountains jersey. The finish would become widely known after numerous appearances in cycling from the Critérium du Dauphiné, to the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de l’Avenir.

Stage 11: Albertville – Col Du Granon Serre Cheva, 152 KM

The GC contenders will need to be ready to focus after the first rest day and rolling hills in stage 10. Stage 11 will hit them again and again with three cols that are tightly packed as they enter the Alps. The day will get started with the Montvernier switchbacks. If Geraint Thomas has maintained the form he displayed recently at the Tour de Suisse, all eyes will be upon him. Albertville is where Thomas took the yellow jersey back in 2018 and held it through to Paris.

The summit finish atop Col du Granon held the grand esteem of being the highest point in the Tour for 25 years before the title was taken by the Galibier in 2011. It made its debut in 1986, when Eduardo Chozas soared to victory after an astonishing 170 km solo breakaway. That same finish marked the end of the yellow jersey reign of Bernard Hinault, when he surrendered his 79th maillot jaune to American Greg Lemond.

This first major test in the Alps will determine if Pogačar is ready to defend for a record third time in hopes of joining the legends - Louison Bobet, Jacques Anquetil, and the Cannibal himself, Eddy Merckx - in winning 3 consecutive Tours.

Stage 12: Briançon – Alpe d’Huez, 165.5 KM

A historic favorite is set for stage 12 as the battle in the Alps comes to a close on the infamous Alpe d’Huez. The route is an exact replica of the stage in 1986. Racing fans should expect to see a lot of trainers out and riders warming up before the start of this stage. The grand Col du Galibier awaits them only 33 km into the stage. After a fast and technical descent, the Col de la Croix de Fer will be up next before the crowds and Dutch corner explode with excitement, willing each rider up the 21 switchbacks with their screams of “Allez!!” at every turn.

This will be the 31st appearance by the Alpe d’Huez, 70 years after summit finishes were first introduced. Both Pierre Rolland and Thibaut Pinot have enjoyed victories here for the host nation. Time will tell who will be next to add their name to the history book atop this legendary mountain.

Stage 17: Saint-Gaudens – Peyragudes, 130 KM

Tour de France Race Director, Christian Prudhomme, says this penultimate climbing stage will be the third runway to success in the 2022 Tour. The start in Saint-Gaudens has a dramatic history, from Gino Bartoli’s protest that triggered a feud between France and Italy, to the multiple riders who have stolen the maillot jaune. Tour leaders will have to put on their best poker face if they hope to defend their positions.

The first of 3 category 1 climbs launches midway into the stage in the heart of the Pyrenees. The last time the Tour finished here was in 2017, when Romain Bardet (now racing for Team DSM) emerged solo on the steep run-in to the finish, ahead of Italian Fabio Aru, and Colombian star, Rigoberto Uran. Alejandro Valverde was the first victor here in 2012. While the Tour has passed through Peyragudes dozens of times, 2022 will be only the third time they will host a stage finish.

Stage 18: Lourdes – Hautacam, 143 KM

This final test in the mountains of the Pyrenees, will give no respite for the weary. No matter what the gaps are between the leaders, expect fireworks on the stage. Organizers were able to link the first Hors Catégorie Col d’Aubisque with the Col de Spandelles for the first time in Tour history, with not a moment to breathe in between the two.

The final Hautacam ascent was where Cadel Evans’ made his move in 2008, stealing the lead by a mere second from Frank Schleck. Vincenzo Nibali took his fourth stage victory here in 2014 and the yellow jersey before celebrating on the Champs-Elysées. Racing fans will miss him as he is set to retire at the end of the season.

The final stage in the Pyrenees should not disappoint, whether it is Tadej Pogačar fighting for a hat trick or coming from behind Primoz Roglič or an upset by Michael Woods or Geraint Thomas. The riders will surely put on a spectacular show as the curtain closes on the 2022 battle in the mountains.

The location code is A to F for standard cabins with A being the most desirable location. 1 to 6 for premium cabins with 1 being the more desirable location. U to Z for obstructed staterooms with U being the more desirable location. As an example MA stands for a Mini Suite (M=Mini Suite) in a prime location (A=Most desired location - midship, quiet location).

First French stage win… by Jumbo-Visma!

Christophe Laporte avoided the hosting country to be left with no stage win like in the 1926 and 1999 Tour de France as he powered to victory almost 2km before the finishing line of stage 19 in Cahors. He surprised pure sprinters Jasper Philipsen and Alberto Dainese who came second and third. He got the green light from Wout van Aert to go and get the fifth stage victory in this Tour de France, his personal first one at the age of 29 after he transferred from Cofidis to Jumbo-Visma, the Dutch team that keeps dominating the overall classification with Jonas Vingegaard two days before reaching Paris.

MOHORIC, VAN DER HOORN, HONORÉ AND SIMMONS IN THE LEAD

139 riders took the start of stage 19 in Castelnau-Magnoac, the village of rugby player Antoine Dupont, at 13.09. Mikkel Honoré (Quick Step), Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo) and Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert) rode away at km 4, quickly joined by Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) and Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe). They got a maximum advantage of 1’30’’ as sprinters’ teams like Lotto-Soudal, Alpecin-Deceuninck, BikeExchange-Jayco and DSM kept them on a leash, riding fast with a three-quarter tailwind. Simmons won the intermediate sprint at Auch (km 38.4) where a tribute was paid to the late Nicolas Portal who was the head sport director of Team Sky. The breakaway group was almost reeled in at Fleurance, km 53. Politt sat up but Honoré relaunched the move and Simmons, Mohoric and Van der Hoorn went with him. Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels-KTM) escaped from the peloton but failed to bridge the gap by a mere five seconds. The Frenchman got brought back and the advantage of the quartet went up again: 1’ at km 80.

POGACAR ON THE ATTACK! Philippe Gilbert led the bunch for most of the race for Lotto-Soudal, with other sprinters’ teams like BikeExchange-Hayco, Alpecin-Deceuninck and DSM also involved in the chase. Simmons attacked up the hill to the medieval town of Lauzerte. Mohoric went with him to sprint for the cat. 4 KOM price in a spectacular manner. Simmons continued solo with 48km remaining. He was brought back 13km further. Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) counter-attacked and the next rider who tried to escape from the peloton after having had a bike change due to a mechanical was no less than… Tadej Pogacar! Wout van Aert reacted quickly. Gougeard was joined in the lead by Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) with 32km to go.

VAN AERT PAVES THE WAY FOR LAPORTE The trio rode into the last 20km with 30’’ lead over the peloton led mostly by TotalEnergies. Lotto-Soudal took over with Brent Van Moer. Stage favourites Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Michael Matthews (BikeExchange-Jayco) pulled the peloton as they were racing for Christophe Laporte and Dylan Groenewegen respectively. Wright sped up but 1.5km before the end, Laporte was the first rider to catch the trio and he put the hammer down. He accelerated a second time 500 meters before the end. He continued his effort till the finishing line at the end of a slightly uphill road to take the first French stage victory of the 109th Tour de France while Pogacar sprinted to fifth place.

The Ultimate Guide to the Tour de France 2022 King of the Mountains Competition

klimmers tour de france 2022

The mountains classification is always a great attraction of the Tour de France, especially when the fight for the general classification is not entertaining or exciting deep into the race. In this article, we will take a closer look at 2022 edition’s scoring system, the tactics for winning it and who are the favourites.

This year’s route is quite mountainous, with mythical passes such as Galibier, Alpe d’Huez or Hautacam. In this article , we analysed all these climbs featuring in the 2022 Tour de France, including projected climbing times and watts. In total, there will be:

  • 61 categorised climbs;
  • 7 Hors Catégorie climbs;
  • 10 category 1 climbs;
  • 6 category 2 climbs;
  • 16 category 3 climbs; and
  • 22 category 4 climbs,

for 985 available points.

Logically, the Hors Catégorie climbs are the most important, with a big difference over the rest. Not only does the first rider score twice as much as a first category climb, but there are points up to the eighth position, as you can see in the following graph.

klimmers tour de france 2022

Moreover, according to the rules, “in the event of two riders being equal on points in the best climber classification, the rider with the most first places at the summit of Hors Catégorie passes or climbs or summit finishes will be declared the winner”.

If a rider’s goal is the final mountain classification, there is little point in expending valuable energy racing for the points available on Category 3 or 4 climbs, and instead they should focus on the Hors Catégorie and Category 1 climbs. In any case, modest teams will compete for the points on these small hills in the first week to wear the jersey until the arrival of the high mountains and thus maximise their visibility and publicity impact on the race, as was the case last year when Perez and Schelling battled throughout the Grand Depart on the short hills in Brittany last year.

In addition, although they have almost no impact on the classification, topping a fourth category climb is rewarded with 200 euros, which is welcome among the cyclists with lower salaries.

klimmers tour de france 2022

As we can see in the graph, the Hors Catégorie and Category 1 climbs share 86% of the total points for the mountain classification. Five of the seven Hors Catégorie are in the two big Alpine stages, with finishes at Col du Granon and Alpe d’Huez. Those two stages will be key, as if a rider passes all the climbs first he can score 55 and 60 points respectively. However even in the event of the GC group eventually catching the breakaway on the four major climbing stages (11, 12, 17 and 18), four of the seven Hors Catégorie climbs are during the middle of the stage where it is much more likely that a breakaway will still be up the road to take maximum points.

Below you can see the exact distribution of points on each stage, with the heavy weighting in the Alps and Pyrenees.

klimmers tour de france 2022

As the key stages come in the first block of mountain stages, it is possible that many good climbers will not have given up on the general classification and will find it difficult to get into the breakaway. Therefore, contenders for the mountain classification who are not thinking about the general classification will have a competitive advantage, and may even score some points on stage 9, with two first category mountain passes, where a breakaway is expected to win. In these Alpine stages, the mountains jersey could also be a good target for riders who drop out of the general classification in the traps of the first week, such as the windy stages, the pavé or the finish at La Planche des Belles Filles.

It is clear that riders with ambitions for the KOM should not leave their homework for the Pyrenees, because the classification is likely to be very clear after Alpe d’Huez on stage 12 and with the GC group likely to be motivated on stage 18 to pace on Spandelles and Hautacam, reducing the likelihood of a breakaway winnig.

An anti-Pogacar system

Unlike in recent editions, this year there will be no climbs with double points, which will favour the KOM to be won by a climber who enters the breakaways in the high mountain stages. The sponsor of the mountains classification is probably interested in having its jersey worn by one of the best riders in the world, but last year’s scoring system was very distorting. In the last two editions of the Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar has won the KOM classification without it being a main objective for him, as he was busy fighting for the yellow jersey.

klimmers tour de france 2022

For example, last year there were double points for the second pass of Mont Ventoux and the finishes of Col du Portet and Luz Ardiden. These passes were already categorised as Hors Catégorie, but the organisers decided that they would distribute twice as many points as the other Hors Catégorie climbs (40 points for the first rider instead of 20). Poels, Woods and Quintana were fighting for several stages in this classification, but finally Pogacar won it “unintentionally” by winning in the Pyrenees on Col du Portet and Luz Ardiden, scoring 40 points on each climb. With the current scoring system, Wout Poels would have won the mountains classification in 2021 and Richard Carapaz in 2020, so it will be very difficult for Pogacar to repeat in 2022, particularly if he faces stiffer competition from his GC competitors on the mountain top finishes compared to last year.

The contenders

Pogacar (or whoever is the best climber in the race) will concentrate most of his points on the top finishes: La Planche des Belles Filles, Col du Granon, Alpe d’Huez, Peyragudes and Hautacam. In the best case scenario, assuming he wins those 5 stages, he would score 80 points, which might not even be enough to win the mountains classification given the amount of Hors Catégorie and Category 1 passes in the middle of the stages. Therefore, the chances of Pogacar winning the mountains classification for the third year in a row are very low.

The two riders who can set their sights on the mountains classification right from the start are local stars Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet (KOM at the 2019 Tour). Neither of them have the general classification as a target and they do have enough level to get over the big Alpine passes at the head of the race as shown by Pinot in his recent Tour de Suisse stage win and Bardet on Blockhaus in the Giro d’Italia.

klimmers tour de france 2022

Other French climbers like Warren Barguil (KOM at the 2017 Tour), Guillaume Martin (KOM at the 2020 Vuelta) or Pierre Rolland always go on the attack, but perhaps they lack the climbing level to win the Tour’s mountains classification if riders like Pinot and Bardet focus on the classification. After his display on Mont Ventoux and the Dauphiné, we also cannot forget Ruben Guerreiro (KOM at the Giro 2020), who in principle comes to the Tour with the objective of winning stages but may inadvertently pick up points by being in breakaways and fall into the KOM fight.

The final tier of favourites is made up of the general classification contenders who will change their objective after the complicated first week. Nairo Quintana and Michael Woods already tried in 2021 and could rethink this objective, but my outsider is Adam Yates. The Englishman comes to the Tour after passing Covid and it would be logical for him to suffer in the chaotic first week filled with wind and cobbles. With Thomas and Martínez for the general classification, Ineos could think about Adam Yates for the mountains classification and breakaway stages in the mountains, racing the Tour in a more offensive way without an outright GC favourite.

We hope you enjoyed this breakdown of the King of the Mountains classification at the Tour de France 2022. If you want to follow Raúl’s thoughts during the Tour, follow him on twitter @raulbanqueri .

What about Ruben Guerreiro? I see him as an outsider to the jersey as well after his performances the last month or so

Great read, thanks. Some time ago, with friends we were talking about this same issue, that KOM competition has kind of lost it’s identity and GC winner takes KOM as well. Would love to see a return of full on battle for polka dot jersey once again.

I may have jumped the gun on that one

Literally in the article: “After his display on Mont Ventoux and the Dauphiné, we also cannot forget Ruben Guerreiro (KOM at the Giro 2020), who in principle comes to the Tour with the objective of winning stages but may inadvertently pick up points by being in breakaways and fall into the KOM fight.”

Wonderful article. Really detailed and helpful to understand the differences between previous editions

Great article and that pie chart works wonders – why the hell doesn’t ASO present the points available like that! Thank you.

another stunning work. thanks Raül.

Best assessment I’ve read. Even as we enter stage 18 tomorrow this analysis still holds up. Thank you for making the KOM competition so much more clear and so much more interesting!

Tour de France 2022 route: All the rumours ahead of the big reveal

Cobbles, altitude, Alpe d’Huez and another final time trial on the cards next July

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) on the podium at the 2021 Tour de France

Update: Tour de France 2022 route revealed The 2 022 Tour de France i s set to pay a visit to the cobblestones of P aris-Roubaix and return to Alpe d’Huez for the first time in four years, with the Alps followed by the Pyrenees and another penultimate-day time trial to decide the yellow jersey ahead of the finale in Paris.

The route for the 109th edition of the Tour de France will officially be unveiled in Paris on Thursday but, as ever, details have been slipping through the cracks.

Regional French media outlets are often keen to report possible stage starts and finishes in their localities, while hotel bookings in certain towns can give an indication of the yellow juggernaut being set to pass through.

Tour de France 2022 Tour de France jerseys to be provided by Santini Denmark set for clash between Tour de France and European Football Championships in 2021

Thomas Vergouwen, who runs the Velowire website, has become the leading light in deciphering all this information to produce an overall picture of the route and its key points before Christian Prudhomme reaches the lectern in the Palais des Congrès.

In recent years, the general picture has proved very reliable and this year looks set to continue that trend, with more detail and a more precise schedule than ever.

Grand Départ

The 2022 Tour de France will start in Copenhagen , Denmark, on July 1. This is already official, as are the details of the three stages that will take place on Danish soil during the Grand Départ, before the race transfers to France.

This was supposed to be the start of this year’s edition of the Tour de France, but coronavirus pandemic and the European Championships in football forced the organisers to scrap that plan and push it back to 2022.

The race will open with a flat 13-kilometre time trial in the Danish capital, which, with the first yellow jersey on the line, could tempt world champion Filippo Ganna into a Tour de France debut. The following two days feature traditional road stages, where the terrain is flat but the wind could have a say, making for a typically tense and nervy start to the race. Stage 2, from Roskilde, heads down a long stretch of coast and then crosses a 18km bridge over the Great Belt strait to the finish in Nyborg.

Stage 3 takes place on the western flank of Denmark, starting in Vejle and making its way down to Sønderborg, where a bunch sprint is the likely outcome.

Into France, and maybe Belgium

John Degenkolb and Greg Van Avermaet wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey ride through a cobblestone section during stage 9 of the 105th edition of the Tour de France

Following the three Danish stages, the race will transfer to France and, given the distance involved, there will be an additional and early rest day to facilitate this. Having started a day earlier than usual on the Friday, this allows the rest day to take place on the traditional Monday slot.

According to Velowire , the race will take the shortest trip possible from Copenhagen to France, with the race set to resume on the Tuesday in the very north east corner of France. This opens the door for a Classics-favoured first week, with a trip to the Roubaix pavé and an excursion into Belgium.

The Voix du Nord newspaper, which covers the Nord region of France, has the most information, reporting that stage 4 will finish in Calais, possibly starting just along the coast in Dunkirk, although details of the parcours remain scarce.

There is a stronger indication that the following day will be raced on cobblestones, starting in the centre of Lille and heading for Wallers-Arenberg, which is the heart of the Paris-Roubaix route. If so, the stage would almost inevitably incorporate some of the cobbled sectors from the Hell of the North, albeit in the opposite direction.

The Tour last visited the pavé in 2018, when John Degenkolb won the stage , while previous visits took place in 2015, 2014 - when the race was blown apart - and 2010.

The race is then set to cross the border into Belgium. Multiple outlets have reported that Binche will host a stage start, and that it could come with a finish in Longwy, which is back in France but a stone’s throw from the border with Belgium and also Luxembourg. This is said to be stage 6 and, while the details of the route itself are unclear, it would likely be a day for the puncheurs, with hilly terrain on offer in Wallonia and an uphill finish in Longwy that was used on the race’s last visit in 2017, where Peter Sagan got the better of Julian Alaphilippe.

The Planche des Belles Filles, in the nearby Vosges Mountains, has fast become a fixture of the Tour de France and has long been rumoured to be on the both the men’s route and the all-new women’s race for 2022.  L’Est Républicain recently reported that this would indeed be the case, with the first true summit finish of the Tour thus coming on stage 7.

La Planche des Belles Filles was first used in 2012 and returned in 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2020, when Tadej Pogačar snatched the overall title in an uphill time trial. 2019 saw the finish line positioned on a steep gravel track beyond the traditional summit but it’s not clear if that would be repeated next year.

After the early stages, the picture is that the race would then head towards the Alps via Switzerland. Swiss outlet RTS reports a stage 8 finish in Lausanne after a start in Dole, in what could be a totally flat stage or a late climb and descent if it approaches via the small Jura mountain range.

The same publication reports that the following stage would start in Aigle, home to the UCI, and finish in the French ski resort of Châtel, which is backed up in regional French paper Le Dauphiné Libéré . There are plenty of nearby climbs to make a mountain stage but, given the proximity of the two towns, a time trial - which would be around 30km and largely uphill - cannot be completely ruled out.

The race would then pause for its second rest day, and Velowire reports that this will be in Morzine, with the Haute-Savoie town - best known for hosting finishes down off the Col de Joux Plane - to host the start of stage 10 the following morning. The finish is said to be in Mégève, with the Col de Colombière and Col des Aravis a couple of the options en route.

While stage 10 would likely feature a descent towards the finish, reports suggest a spectacular set of back-to-back summit finishes as the Alps take a leading role in the 2022 Tour.

First up is a high-altitude finish all the way up at 2,400 metres on the Col du Granon, reported by various media outlets. The climb, which measures 11km and 9 per cent from the south, has only been used once before, all the way back in 1986. Only the nearby Col du Galibier has hosted a finish at higher altitude.

There are similarly multiple reports of a return to Alpe d’Huez, a staple of the Tour de France but not seen since Geraint Thomas’ victory in the yellow jersey in 2018. This stage would take place on Bastille Day, making for a festival atmosphere on the famous 21 hairpins.

Over to the Pyrenees

After the Alpine feast, reports suggest the race will then head over towards the Pyrenees, with the two mountain ranges linked in traditional fashion by a series of transition stages across the south of France. According to Velowire ’s outline, this would make for flatter stages on both the middle weekends of the race, which are usually reserved for the most attractive mountain stages.

Either way, newspaper Le Progrès reports that the Tour will leave the Alps and head for a finish in the city of Saint Etienne on stage 13, before heading west to Mende the following day. That would be more of a medium-mountain day, with the short steep climb to the airport, once associated with Laurent Jalabert, last used in 2018, when Omar Fraile won, and before that in 2015 when Steve Cummings memorably played Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot off each other to win MTN-Qhubeka’s first stage on Mandela Day.

There are no details yet on the following stage but it would likely take the race to the base of the Pyrenees and, according to Velowire ’s schedule, it would be on the Sunday ahead of the second rest day.

There is similar uncertainty surrounding the first day of the final week, with Foix referenced as a possible finish location for stage 16, but reports suggest another helping of back-to-back summit finishes in the Pyrenees as well as the Alps. La Dépêche du Midi and France Bleu Occitannie have both indicated that the race will feature a showpiece finale at Peyragudes, using the spectacularly steep altiport runway made famous by the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies. This was used in 2017, when Romain Bardet won and Mikel Landa rode away from his team leader Chris Froome, drawing comparisons with the way Froome had ridden clear of Wiggins further down the mountain on the Col de Peyresourde in 2012.

The second summit finish is said to be at Hautacam, which, like Peyragudes, is around 1,500 metres in altitude. The traditional route up is 13.5km at an irregular gradient that averages out to 7.8 per cent, and has usually been preceded by the mighty Col du Tourmalet, as when Vincenzo Nibali won on the last visit in 2014.

According to Velowire , the race would then leave the Pyrenees but the general classification could yet swing, with another penultimate-day time trial on the cards. This would be the third year in a row and the fifth time in six years that this format has been employed for the final say in the destination of the yellow jersey.

Stage 19 would take the race away from the mountains – with Cahors referenced as a possible finish town – for what would likely be a flat or rolling stage where breakaways have often found fertile ground at such a late juncture.

The stage 20 time trial appears to have emerged not through newspaper reports but a Facebook post from a group of local construction workers who apparently weren’t aware of the need to keep things under wraps. La Dépêche du Midi picked up on the report and suggests a race against the clock from Lacapelle-Marival to Rocamadour, around 30km in length on rolling terrain.

Stage 21 is the traditional final-day procession into Paris, followed by laps of the Champs-Elysées and a final sprint ahead of the podium ceremonies.

To arrive at the foot of the feared and revered Col de Joux Plane the riders have to conquer the Col de Saxel (4.2 kilometres at 4.6%), Col de Cou (7 kilometres at 7,4%), Col du Feu (5.8 kilometres at 7.8%), Col de Jambaz (6.8 kilometres at 3.8%), and Col de Ramaz (13.9 kilometres at 7.1%). The Joux Plane itself is a brutal test – 11.6 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 8.5%. Which is all the more intimidating with the realisation that the second half is virtually entirely double digit material.

The summit of the de Joux Plane is not the start of the downhill finale. The riders stay at altitude for a couple of kilometres – first false flat down, then false flat up – before the descent is extremely technical and difficult. The last few hundred metres in Morzine climb at 3% to the line, which could be important in a sprint.

Attackers or GC riders? We would say the first category, but it could be the other way around just as easily.
