11 Places to Visit in Lake Sebu + Things To Do

11 Places to Visit in Lake Sebu + Things To Do

Take a breather from the hustle of city life and travel to Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, a charming town where the T’boli and Ubo tribes thrive. A culture trip to this municipality lets you in on the local lifestyle, particularly their bead making, brass casting, and wood carving heritage. More than those, Lake Sebu is also one of the Philippines’ prime eco-tourism destinations.

The center of attraction in Lake Sebu is, of course, the lake. It’s a great place to cruise around in a canoe early morning to catch the sunrise and enjoy the mood-enhancing views of the surrounding mountains and rainforests. Beyond the lake, including its little islets, you must not miss the Seven Waterfalls, a magnificent network of waterfalls, each with a character of its own. You can only have the best view of these waterfalls via the Seven Falls zipline, the highest in Southeast Asia. It’s the most popular attraction for those who can brave getting suspended 180 meters from the ground.

Lake Sebu may be a far-flung town, but it’s a destination worthy of squeezing in when you travel to General Santos City or Davao City. It will make your trip even more meaningful.

Lake Sebu Travel Guide: Experience the Culture of T’Boli Tribe

Lake Sebu

Welcome to Lake Sebu

Perched in the highlands of South Cotabato is the town of Lake Sebu , home to the indigenous T’boli and Ubo tribes and an emerging eco-tourism and adventure destination in Southern Mindanao.

Known for its majestic waterfalls, lakes, rivers and springs, and with its rich biodiversity and culture, Lake Sebu is starting to hit big in the tourism landscape of the region. Its main attractions include Lake Sebu, the biggest of the three lakes that dot the town and an important watershed in the region being the source of water of the provinces of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.

Lake Sebu

Aside from the lake, tourists also troop to this part of Mindanao to see the waterfalls in Barangay Siloton. A total of seven majestic waterfalls with the water coming from the outflows of the Lakes Sebu and Siloton. The first two waterfalls are easily accessible to tourists while the others require trekking. But the best way to see these waterfalls is by riding a zipline that passes above five of them!

With all the attractions that the town offers, it is without a doubt that Lake Sebu is one of the best places in the country to experience culture, appreciate the beauty of nature and enjoy thrilling adventure. A paradise on its own right, make Lake Sebu one of your unforgettable travel experiences in your journey to Mindanao.

Lake Sebu and the T’boli Dream Weavers

lake sebu eco tourism

Lake Sebu was the last stop of our visit to South Cotabato for the Sustainable Community-Based Tourism Recognition (SCBTR) by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), the marketing arm of the Department of Tourism (DoT). Together with the TPB people and sustainable tourism assessors, we set out to Lake Sebu to get to know the T’boli People .

Table of Contents

Lake Sebu School of Living Traditions (SLT)

Lang dulay weaving center, punta isla lake resort, overall experience, lake sebu and t’boli people.

The T’boli are an Indigenous People (IPs) native to South Cotabato, living around the mystical Lake Sebu. Located in Southern Mindanao in the Philippines, the T’boli are recognised for their remarkable T’nalak weaves. Their distinctive weaving technique is characterized by tribal designs and patterns passed through their dreams, earning them the title “ Dream Weavers .” This sacred weaving practice represents not just Mindanao’s rich cultural heritage, but all of the Philippines.

Fun fact: Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray wore various T’nalak outfits during the competition.

The Lake Sebu School of Living Traditions (SLT) is a humble cultural center that promotes eco-tourism and T’boli traditions. Established by  Maria “Oyog” Todi , the informal learning center, which is also a humble homestay, helps to preserve the T’boli culture and tradition. Here children and adults get to immerse and learn about T’boli’s rich cultural heritage by being introduced to various T’boli musical instruments (you can also learn how to play!), T’nalak, the T’boli sacred cloth, intricately designed T’boli accessories and ornaments, and so much more.

As a first time visitor in Lake Sebu, I feel like going to SLT is the very first thing any tourist should do. It’s a great introduction to Lake Sebu and of course, the T’boli.

lake sebu eco tourism

If you ever find yourself in Lake Sebu, find Maria “Oyog” Todi.  I did not expect that I would meet such an empowering and inspirational woman in a tribe where there is a strong male dominance. Besides being a mother of four, she devoted her life to preserving T’boli culture and making sure it will be carried on by the next generation. She is an advocate of T’boli women and children’s rights, and at a time where speaking out as a feminist in a public position could be dangerous, she she stood up and became an inspiration to her fellow T’boli. Maria “Oyog” Todi truly embodies what it means to be a strong and empowered woman.

lake sebu eco tourism

The second stop of our visit to Lake Sebu was the Lang Dulay Weaving Center , a weaving center established by Lang Dulay , a recipient of National Living Treasures Award, alternatively known as the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan, given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Known as “The Dream Weaver,” Lang Dulay showed outstanding craftsmanship and excellence that are unparalleled even after her death in 2015. Through her passion and dedication in passing down this rich cultural heritage to the youth, hundreds of her T’nalak designs were preserved and intellectual-property patented.

lake sebu eco tourism

Charlie Dulay, the grandson of Lang Dulat, told us that T’nalk weaving is a very tedious process and requires much dedication, patience, creativity and a good memory. Their designs and patterns are inspired by their dreams, which is said to be passed on by their ancestors, and are transferred onto abaca fabric using the Ikat weaving method ; which refers to the dyeing technique used before weaving takes place on the fabric. According to him, it takes approximately three to six months to finish a roll of T’nalak, depending on the complexity of the design.

T'nalak clothing

The last stop of our Lake Sebu tour was Punta Isla Lake Resort, where we had an awesome view of the lake and a sumptuous lunch aboard a floating restaurant. Here we got to try out unique Tilapia dishes like Chicharon Tilapia, Sinanglay na Tilapia and Sisig na Tilapia. I enjoyed the 45-minute cruise especially because the T’boli host gave us interesting facts about the lake and different perspective since we are right in the middle of it.

lake sebu eco tourism

Visiting Lake Sebu, meeting Maria “Oyog” Todi and getting a closer look to the T’nalak weaving process at the Lang Dulay Weaving Center were some of the best experiences I had in South Cotabato. The fact that so many Filipino and foreign tourists were afraid to go due to security concerns and the onslaught of commercialism and modern culture are real threat to the T’boli. Being nominated as a Sustainable Tourism Destination during the Sustainable Community-Based Tourism Recognition (SCBTR) by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), hopefully will help the tribe’s cultural and economic survival.

lake sebu eco tourism

If you ask me if I ever felt unsafe at any point on my visit to Lake Sebu, NO I did not. Would I go there as a solo female traveler? YES. Especially now that I know just how many amazing sights I will see in this region. I would probably stay at the homestay (Lake Sebu School of Living Traditions) and spend time with Maria “Oyog” Todi and her family. I would also like to see the majestic Lake Sebu 7 falls and of course, to eat Chicharon Tilapia again!

Sustainable Tourism and Community Impact

The concept of sustainable tourism plays a crucial role in the preservation and appreciation of Lake Sebu, a natural wonder imbued with deep cultural significance. As the area continues to attract visitors drawn to its beauty and tranquility, the emphasis on sustainable practices ensures that tourism benefits both the environment and the local communities, particularly the indigenous T’boli people, who are the stewards of this land.

Empowering Local Communities

Sustainable tourism in Lake Sebu focuses on empowering the local communities by providing them with opportunities for economic growth while ensuring the preservation of their cultural heritage and natural resources. By involving local residents in tourism-related activities — as guides, artisans, or hosts — the region fosters an environment where the benefits of tourism are distributed equitably. This not only improves the economic well-being of the T’boli people but also encourages the transmission of cultural knowledge and traditions to visitors, creating a rich, immersive experience that respects and celebrates the local culture.

Conservation Efforts and Environmental Awareness

Lake Sebu’s natural environment is as fragile as it is beautiful. Sustainable tourism practices are essential in minimizing the ecological footprint of visitors. Efforts include educating tourists on responsible behaviors, such as proper waste disposal and respecting wildlife habitats, and implementing policies that limit environmental impact. Conservation initiatives, often led by local and non-governmental organizations, work to protect the area’s biodiversity, focusing on reforestation, species protection, and the sustainable management of natural resources. These efforts ensure that Lake Sebu remains a vibrant ecosystem that supports both the people who live there and the wildlife that calls it home.

Promoting Eco-Friendly Accommodations and Activities

T'nalak Festival in SOX Koronadal City, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato,

In line with sustainable tourism principles, Lake Sebu offers eco-friendly accommodations and activities that aim to reduce environmental impact and enhance the visitor experience. Eco-lodges and community homestays are designed to be in harmony with the natural surroundings, using sustainable materials and practices such as solar energy and rainwater harvesting. Similarly, the activities available to tourists, from nature walks to cultural tours, are planned with sustainability in mind, offering low-impact ways to explore and appreciate the area’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

One of the most beautiful Philippine traditional costumes I have ever seen. This is one thing that you would probably enjoy the most when you are here. Renting the T’boli’s traditional costume is very affordable. You can even rent it for a day!

Feel the T’boli culture by wearing their own traditional costume. It’s best when you try it on while riding on a canoe at the lake, with the lotus flowers as your backdrop!

Visit the T’boli Museum

If you want to know more about the culture and tradition of the T’boli tribe, then you must visit the T’boli museum. With that, you can get a chance to see and touch some of the ancient musical instruments and even the other indigenous items of the T’boli tribe.

Sepaka River

To reach the Sepaka River, you need to trek for about 15-20 minutes. It sounds a bit challenging but the trek rewards you a cold, crystal clear river which is definitely good for swimming! You may also bring some food with you if you want to go on a picnic. Just leave no trash!

Divine Mercy Shrine

Divine Mercy Shrine is a holy place good for meditation. If you are looking for another place to relax, then get over here. The view from the shrine showcases the beautiful mountain ranges and rainforests of South Cotabato.

Go caving or spelunking

If you crave for more adventurous activity, you can go spelunking at a thousand-year-old cave located in Lake Sebu.

Blend in with the locals

One of the most respectful locals are from Lake Sebu. They are very welcoming and they would even make you feel at home. You don’t have to worry about talking with them! This makes you want to stay more in the town.

Why Visit Lake Sebu, South Cotabato?

Whenever my family, friends, and others ask me if it is safe to travel to Mindanao, I never hesitate to say YES. YES. It is generally safe to travel to Mindanao! But it doesn’t mean that you do not need to be cautious anymore.

Low-cost travel.

You might want to bet on me if I say that this is one of the cheapest places to visit in the Philippines. It is a fact. Imagine staying in a comfortable place for only Php 100 per night? Have a taste of the local food that doesn’t cost a hundred bucks at all? Getting around the town without even getting broke?! How amazing is that? You must visit this place for you to see it! You don’t need to bring too much when you go to this place.

People are kind.

As I mentioned earlier, the locals from South Cotabato are very respectful. You will definitely feel at home in this little town of South Cotabato.

Far away from stress.

The life here is so simple that it makes you even wonder about settling down here in the future. Everything is at peace, most especially at night. Not to mention the fact that you get closer to nature. You tend to forget everything about your hectic life in the city.

Feels like you’re in a different timezone.

When you are in South Cotabato, it feels like you are out of this world. It feels so refreshing to visit this unfamiliar place for the first time. Experiencing T’boli’s culture is such an eye-opener. You get to widen your perspective about life. It feels like getting connected with the ancient times by immersing yourself in the indigenous people.

New learnings.

One of the best parts of traveling to a new place is that you get to learn new things. You get to experience things you have never done or seen before. Everything that you get to observe here is totally energizing. It makes you feel so excited that you crave more discoveries.

The majestic seven waterfalls of lake sebu.

Seven Waterfalls of Lake Sebu

Nestled in the heart of the southern Philippine island of Mindanao , Lake Sebu is a natural wonder that has captivated locals and tourists alike. Its stunning waterfalls, collectively called the Seven Falls of Lake Sebu, are a must-visit for anyone who loves nature and adventure. In this post, we’ll look closer at what makes the Seven Waterfalls of Lake Sebu a truly unforgettable destination.

Getting to Lake Sebu

Before we dive into the waterfalls, let’s talk about how to get to Lake Sebu. The easiest way is to fly to General Santos City, served by several airlines. You can take a bus or van from the airport to Koronadal City, then transfer to another van or jeepney to Lake Sebu. The entire trip takes about three to four hours, depending on traffic.

If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car in General Santos or Koronadal and take the scenic route to Lake Sebu. The road is paved and well-maintained, although some parts can be steep and winding. Bring a map or GPS device, as some areas may have poor cellular reception.

Accommodations in the Lake Sebu area range from budget homestays to mid-range resorts. Most offer hot showers, free Wi-Fi, and in-house local cuisine restaurants. For a more authentic experience, you can also stay with a T’boli family and learn about their culture and way of life.

The Seven Waterfalls

Now, let’s talk about the main attraction: the 7 Waterfalls of Lake Sebu. Here’s a rundown of each waterfall and what makes them unique:

  • Hikong Bente – The tallest waterfall in the series, with a height of around 70 meters. It is named after the T’boli word for “twenty,” as the waterfall has 20 levels or tiers.
  • Hikong Alo – This waterfall is known for its excellent, refreshing pool at the bottom, perfect for swimming and picnics. The name “alo” means “deep” in T’boli.
  • Hikong Ukol – A smaller waterfall with a unique feature: a natural sauna created by the steam from the falling water. Visitors can sit on the rocks and enjoy the warm mist.
  • Kili Falls – This waterfall is named after the T’boli word for “three,” as it has three tiers. It is a popular spot for cliff diving and rappelling.
  • Hikong K’foi – The most picturesque waterfall in the series, with a small cave behind the cascading water. It is said to be the home of the T’boli goddess, Fiuwe.
  • Hikong Tonok – The steepest and most challenging waterfall to climb. It requires a steep and slippery hike, but the view from the top is worth it.
  • Hikong Lowig – The most miniature waterfall in the series but also the most secluded. It is in a lush forest and can only be reached by trekking through a dense jungle.

Trekking to the Seven Waterfalls can take about half a day, depending on your pace and fitness level. There are several trekking routes, ranging from easy to complex. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring enough water and snacks, and follow the guidance of your guide.

Exploring Lake Sebu

Aside from the Seven Waterfalls, Lake Sebu offers many eco-tourism activities and cultural attractions. Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Zipline Adventure – Try the Seven Falls Zipline, one of Southeast Asia’s longest ziplines, for an adrenaline rush. It spans over 700 meters and offers breathtaking waterfalls and lake views.

LAKE SEBU TRAVEL GUIDE: “The Land of the Dreamweavers” (2022 Budget & Itineray)

Joana Paola Gutierrez

Lake Sebu in South Cotabato shelters a number of the best majestic waterfalls and stunning lakes in the country. Dubbed as the Land of the Dreamweavers , the rich culture and impressive traditions of the T’boli tribe can be found in the foot of the mountains. A Lake Sebu trip will invite you to a day of chasing waterfalls, diving into the T’boli culture and learning the traditions in this beautiful province. Above all, you will specially fall in love with the locals itself. Let’s get to know more about South Cotabato’s gems through this Lake Sebu Travel Guide!

In my 3 years continuous journey of trying to explore all the 81 provinces in the Philippines, so far, Lake Sebu of South Cotabato left me a huge mark in my heart. To explore the nooks and crannies with my own eyes surely validated Catriona Gray’s impression to this province. As to her, South Cotabato is her favorite destination in the Philippines and I cannot see why it won’t be.

About Lake Sebu in South Cotabato

To give you a bit of information, Lake Sebu in the province of South Cotabato is surrounded by huge mountains and vast lakes. As a result, Lake Sebu lies in a land of serene atmosphere brought by the healthy nature surrounding it and the locals maintaining a clean atmosphere as well. Getting around Lake Sebu is my favorite part during our SOCCSKSARGEN trip in Mindanao last March 2020. Honestly, it did me a huge favor of indulging myself once again with the beauty of nature in our country.

A 7-waterfall zipline experience, neighboring waterfalls, the T’boli tribe and their culture, impressive South Cotabato delicacies and the wonderful locals to complete the package. These are just some of the prominent list of things to do and see here. And yes! I couldn’t agree more that this is one of the most serene places I’ve been to in the country!

Fun Fact: Did you know that South Cotabato is Philippines’ Ms. Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s favorite destination in the country?

Land of the Dreamweavers

Lake Sebu Travel Guide

T’nalak fabric is a traditional craft that can be found in the T’boli tribe of South Cotabato. This fabric features unique designs of 2 main colors (red and black) which are inspired from the dreams of women weavers. Hence, the brand “Land of the Dreamweavers” .

In addition, the province celebrates the T’nalak Festival every month of July to pay tribute of its foundation and anniversary.

When in Lake Sebu, don’t forget to include Lang Dulay Weaving Center in your trip to learn more about T’nalak and witness how it is manually created by the locals.

The T’boli Tribe in Lake Sebu

Lake Sebu Travel Guide

The T’boli tribe is my personal interest before coming to this beautiful place. Just like the ethnic group of Igorots in Ifugao, the Tausug in Tawi-Tawi and the Ati People in Aklan, I have developed a personal interest in diving to different ethnic cultures in our country.

Learning about the different ethnic groups in our country and getting the chance to experience their culture and traditions gives me genuine happiness. As a result, I make it to a point to include exploring these ethnic groups. Probably the best way to do this is to attend their festivals!

Furthermore, did you know that you can rent T’Boli costumes when you go to Lake Sebu? Yes! It’s possible and it’s also the best way to get to know more about the ethnic group.

The T’boli costume for men is made out of T’nalak fabric while the costume for women is made out of 2 colors (red and black) paired with a malong and partnered with the colorful beads for the accessories.

Must try food in Lake Sebu

Lake Sebu Travel Guide

This Lake Sebu Travel Guide will not be complete without a must-try food in the tourist destination. Since this place is surrounded by lakes, the main dish is tilapia fish. Don’t forget to try chicharong tilapia here! This is honestly so good and tasty.

Where to find this? In our experience, we were able to see this in the menu in almost all restaurants we came to. But, we were able to try it in the restaurant located in Divine Mercy where we had our lunch. It’s about PHP250.00 – PHP350.00 per serving which is good for 3 – 5 people.

How did you manage to have time to visit all these places? Hmmm... but it's a nice feat man.

Are there public transports from the nearby Maitum, Sarangani to Lake Sebu? Or the mountainous area doesn't allow it? I'll be visiting the Pawikan Sanctuary first in Maitum before going to Lake Sebu. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info!

Travel Guide: Why Lake Sebu Should Be On Your Bucket List

by carrentaldavao | Jun 11, 2020 | Blog - Car Rental Davao | 0 comments

lake sebu eco tourism

A place fringed by forests and mountains overlooking the placid lakes is the town of Lake Sebu, a rising eco-tourism, cultural tourism and adventure destination in Southern Mindanao. It is home to the indigenous T’boli and Ubo tribes — which make up 55 percent of its population — and is also known as the “Land of Dream Weavers,” simply because of its proud and celebrated T’nalak tapestry.

Lake Sebu offers bounteous and ravishing landscapes that are all sights to behold — a place worthy to be added on your bucket list. From its lush, virgin forests, abundant biodiversity, rich and diverse culture of its native tribes, the kindness of its people also makes Lake Sebu a fairytale-like experience. It offers not only its peace and beauty, but also the thrill that will satisfy our adventurous self.

How to get to Lake Sebu:

Car Rental Davao will make everything seamless for you as you can get there by renting a vehicle from us . We offer everything from sedan to SUV to vans, all high-quality but cheap rental cars. For tourists, we can arrange an airport car rental for you. Meaning, you’d have the unit picked up or delivered at the city airport. If you are already in Davao, we can also have it dropped off at your preferred location — just make sure to let us know in advance.

Now, to get to Lake Sebu, you have to drive for an estimated time of 4 hours — that is from Davao city proper to the municipality of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. But worry not because while on the road, you will be passing beautiful sceneries and experience peaceful travel away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Once you enter the municipality of Surallah, South Cotabato, you will be greeted by the Tri-People Monument, Surallah’s cultural landmark, which pays tribute to the tri-people living in the area namely the T’bolis, Muslims, and the Christian settlers.

From Surallah, it will just take you few minutes to arrive at the municipality of Lake Sebu wherein the smell of fresh air, birds chirping and beautiful forests will welcome you.

Things to do in Lake Sebu

Lake Sebu offers numerous exciting and thrilling adventures to its visitors. And for a hassle-free and comfortable experience, reserve a unit from Car Rental Davao , either in a short or long term car rental.

Now, let’s get started with the must-visit attractions and must-try activities in Lake Sebu. First, you should visit the seven majestic falls namely Hikong Alo, Hikong Bente, Hikong B’Lebel, Hikong Lowig, Hikong Ukol, Hikong K’Fo-I and Hikong Tonok. You can ride a zip-line here to get a birds-eye view of the entire region.

Trust me, your whole Lake Sebu trip will be a total waste of time and money if you will not try zip-lining. Consider this a must-try and one of the highlights of your trip. While on it, you will surely feel a surge of emotions — and that is normal.

At first, you will be anxious when the staff dangles you. But once you are already up there, you’ll feel relieved, excited and euphoric at the same time. The feeling that you are above the gorgeous scenic view of Lake Sebu will eliminate all your doubts, hesitations and fears.

Scream when it’s necessary.  That will definitely help you get through your emotions. Or cry if you see the need to. Others who went zip-lining with me chose to do that, not because they were afraid, but because they were overjoyed with the entire adrenaline-fueled experience. No words can describe the emotions you’ll feel while zip-lining. It’s a 60-second bliss. If given the chance to try it again, without any hesitation I will do it.

If you want more adventures, you can also do trekking and wander around the virgin forests following the trail to see up close the diverse beauty of fauna and flora and some of the majestic seven falls. Hear the sounds of nature — the macaques laughing, insects buzzing, and the bubbling streams and crumbling of waters from near waterfalls. A rather bizarre orchestra, I know, but these sounds create a symphony that will not just uplift your spirits but will also make you rediscover your purpose in life.

What’s more, you can also experience the Wooden Canoe Lake Cruise by paying a very affordable price of P500. A single canoe can fit at least three people, so if you’re with a group of friends, you can share a ride with them.

And, of course, you should never leave the region without experiencing the rich culture of the T’boli and Ubo tribes. Be delighted by the delicacies, dances, rituals, and practices unique to each tribe. One of the famous weaving techniques in the Philippines originated from T’boli tribe – the T’nalak weaving. See the process of weaving with your very own eyes and be amazed by how they weave the T’nalak.
