DEFENDER 110 SEDONA EDITION
Defender is taking luxurious adventure to a new level with a suite of enhancements across the brand line-up, while the introduction of a new 110 Sedona Edition and simplified specification levels make it easier than ever to pick the perfect Defender.
Passenger comfort is taken up a notch with a new Signature Interior Pack and, for Defender 130 clients, the introduction of the luxurious new Captain Chairs Pack. The new seating option for the second row elevates the passenger experience with two individual luxury seats, featuring arm rests either side and comfortable winged headrests, separated by an aisle that giving gracious walkthrough access to the third row. Across the line-up, the introduction of a new D350 powertrain also provides a powerful, flexible new engine option.
Our vision for Defender is to continuously improve what is already a superb vehicle that can go anywhere and do anything. The introduction of the new Sedona Edition, enhanced interior options and our most powerful ever Defender diesel engine mean our clients now have more choice than ever. And with the new Captain Chairs in Defender 130, up to seven people can now travel in greater comfort on both epic adventures and localised expeditions.
Mark Cameron
Managing director, defender, new defender 110 sedona edition.
Sedona, Arizona, provides the inspiration for the colour of the new 110 Sedona Edition – a place of adventure, stunning natural beauty and mindful escapism. The natural deep red hue of its iron-rich sandstone landforms has been applied to an exclusive new model.
The Defender 110 Sedona Red body is complemented by an Extended Black Pack, with Narvik Black Defender script, front grille and skid plates plus 22-inch Gloss Black alloy wheels and a body-coloured spare wheel cover – an exclusive combination for this new edition 2 . The Sedona Red colour was first seen on Defender 130 and the Defender 110 Sedona Edition will be offered for one year only.
Unique to the Sedona Edition, a new optional bonnet decal depicts the topography of Sedona and reflects Defender’s unstoppable go-anywhere capability and its clientele’s thirst for adventure. The exterior additions are completed by an optional Sedona Red exterior side-mounted gear carrier, ideal for carrying wet or muddy clothing or equipment.
Based on the high specification of Defender X-Dynamic HSE, the Sedona Edition’s interior is available with Ebony Windsor Leather and Kvadrat TM seats for the first time, providing a tough and highly tactile environment.
The seats are part of the newly introduced Signature Interior Pack, which brings a suite of enhancements for greater luxury and attention to detail, tactile new material additions and convenient storage pockets for front row passengers.
Defender 130 Captain Chairs Pack: first-class comfort in the second row
The luxurious new individual chairs available for second-row occupants in Defender 130 provide ultimate comfort, spaciousness and versatility, separated from each other by an aisle that gives elegant and effortless access to the third row. With heating and cooling technology, they’re perfect for first-class adventures across the globe, bringing front-row comfort to those travelling in row two.
Individual arm rests on each of the two chairs raise comfort levels even further, while the aisle between the seats brings additional space for the centre passenger in row three to stretch out. Twin cupholders on a raised area just behind the front centre console provide extra practicality and create an informal divide between the seats.
The second-row Captain Chairs can also be fitted with winged headrests, like those in the front, for even greater comfort on longer journeys and adventures on Defender X and V8 models. They are also available as part of the Signature Interior Pack on X-Dynamic HSE.
Defender 130 V8 Interior with Captain Chairs
New signature interior pack.
The new Signature Interior Pack3 combines a comprehensive suite of upgrades to Defender’s interior across seating and trim finishes, for an even more distinctive environment. Available across all body designs, the Signature Interior Pack is standard on Defender X and V8 specifications, and optional for Defender Dynamic HSE.
In the front row, it provides 14-way electrically controlled seats with heating, cooling and memory functions, with supportive new winged headrests. In the second row, climate seats are fitted – with winged headrests on Defender 110 and 130 models. For those in the third row of Defender 110 and 130, heated seats ensure cold-weather comfort across the entire vehicle.
The luxurious Signature Interior Pack provides material upgrades for heightened tactility throughout the Defender’s cabin, including Windsor Leather and Kvadrat TM seats, available in Ebony or Caraway/Ebony and New Ultrafabrics TM available in Light Cloud/Lunar colourway.
Complementing the seats are softer accents through the cabin and a new centre console side pocket is found on both driver and passenger sides, allowing those in the front to keep smaller items secure with elasticated sides and felt inner trim.
Defender’s distinctive exposed cross car beam is metallic grey with a powder coat finish, while moulded trim accents are finished in Satin Black with subtle chrome interior accents. The Signature Interior Pack also adds a tactile Suedecloth headlining in Light Cloud or Ebony, depending on the seating choice.

Land Rover Rolls Out Midcycle Updates for 2025 Defender, More Luxury, Simpler Options
- Enjoy a more luxurious ride with new optional interior upgrades in the Land Rover Defender, including captain's chair-style seating for the 130 only.
- Simplified packaging and options lists make it easier for buyers to tailor their Defender purchase to their exact needs.
- Despite the midcycle refresh, original engines remain unchanged.
Land Rover recently rolled out some new updates and revisions to its current and beloved off-roader, the Defender , for the new model year. Among those revisions is a range of optional interior upgrades to elevate the luxury factor for the occupants, tweaks to the four-wheel-drive and suspension systems, and a simplified list of packaging for optional extras, all to make shopping for prospective buyers a little bit easier.
It may seem like the Land Rover Defender is still relatively new but believe it or not, it's been with us in its current " L663 " form since 2020, meaning that it's just turning four years old. That said, these revisions constitute what is likely a midcycle refresh of the model, given its age. Generally, most automakers keep a model in series production from anywhere between six and 10 years and midcycle updates usually happen every three to four. Because these updates are only minor, that means the Defender at its core remains largely unchanged.
Our vision for Defender is to continuously improve what is already a superb vehicle and the enhanced interior options mean our clients now have more choice than ever," Defender's Managing Director, Mark Cameron, said in a statement. "And with the new Captain Chairs in Defender 130, up to seven people can now travel in greater comfort on both epic adventures and localized expeditions.
Land Rover's 2024 Defender X-Dynamic SE 110 P400 Is A Brute in a Savile Row Suit
New and more luxurious interior appointments.
For the first time in all the Defender's history—and not just the current generation's—Land Rover introduced new captain's chair-style seating for the second row in the extra-long five-door Defender 130 only. Not only do the new individual bucket seats provide a more luxurious experience for second-row occupants, it also allows for easier entrance and egress for those needing to utilize the third row. They also come equipped, depending on the trim, with heated and cooled abilities, individual armrests, and adjustable winged head rests. The new captain's chair seating is available with the optional "Captain Chairs Package."
Also improving the comfort situation inside the Defender is the new Signature Interior Pack, available on all Defender models. The Signature Interior Pack adds a variety of more upscale trim bits and appointments to elevate the Defender's interior from a more utilitarian experience to a extravagant one, in the event the regular Defender interior isn't nice enough and you don't feel like making the leap to a Range Rover Sport or full-size Range Rover.
Simplified Packages and Options
Because the Defender is available in a wide variety of forms and is designed and engineered to cater to an equally wide audience, Land Rover made some adjustments to the packaging and options lists, all in an effort to make sifting through the optional extras and decision making a little bit easier. That way, buyers can specify the exact level of equipment and gear they need for their Defender purchase and avoid unnecessarily paying for things they don't need.
For instance, one can opt for the "Off-Road Pack," which includes Land Rover's clever and trick Electronic Active Differential, all-terrain tires, Wade Sensing tech for water fording, all-terrain tires, black roof rails, and a domestic electric plug socket. Should you not need these because you don't plan on any serious off-roading or overlanding in the wilderness, one can opt out to help trim down the final invoice sticker.
Should you want the extra off-roading gear because you do plan on using your Defender as its engineers intended, you can also opt for the "Advanced Off-Road Package," which includes everything in the "Off-Road Pack" plus Land Rover's signature and configurable Terrain Response 2 system, electronically controlled air suspension, adaptive body control, and automatic headlight leveling.
Other optionals include a Cold Climate Pack; a separate Air Suspension Pack for those who want the excellent ride and handling compromise that active air suspension provides without all the extra and expensive off-roading gear; a Dynamic Handling Pack for those who keep their Defender mainly on the pavement; and a Driver Assist Pack that adds blind spot detection, rear-collision detection, and rear-cross-traffic alerts.
Same Body, Architecture, and Engines
Because this is a midcycle update, the Land Rover Defender still comes with its original and outstanding 3.0-liter twin-charged (supercharged and turbocharged) inline-six while an optional BMW-sourced twin-turbo V-8 is also on the menu. The Defender still comes in short-wheelbase three-door "Defender 90" form for $56,900, long-wheelbase five-door "Defender 110" form for $60,800, and extra-long five-door "Defender 130" form for $69,700.

2020 Land Rover Defender Towing and Off-road Specs

- 35 inches wading capacity

source: https://www.landroverusa.com/vehicles/defender/specifications.html
To safely stay within the towing limits of the Defender, we chose 3 travel trailers under 6,000 lbs dry weight. Remember, once you add all your items, fill the gas and propane tanks and add a hitch you will be pulling a lot more than the dry weight of the RV! We recommend always staying on the low side of towing capacity of your Defender to account for hilly conditions, wind, and other factors that could make towing unsafe or wreak havoc on your transmission.
- Apex Nano by Coachmen. These lightweight, small length travel trailers are built using Adzel onboard composite sidewall panel technology on aluminum frames, making them strong and lightweight. The Nano has several floor plans to choose from, including the popular 193BHS will full bathroom and bunk beds. Even the largest Nano weights in under 4,000 lbs, so your Defender should tow the Nano line with ease if loaded properly. Here are some new and used Apex Nanos for sale .
2. Forest River Flagstaff Micro-Lite Travel Trailer. This luxurious pull-behind RV has floorplans for every need – bunks, slide-outs, walk-around beds and more. Ranging from 21 ft. to 25 ft. in length, there are 10 different layouts to choose from – all under 5500 lbs. And check out that storage! Micro-Lites for sale
3. Aliner Titanium and Aliner Ranger. Fun fact: you can raise the roof in these easy to tow travel trailers! The Ranger line of Aliner hard-side popup is the perfect companion to the Land Rover Defender. Check out the rugged options on the Titanium models, such as 14″ off road tires and front diamond-plate protection. These fun towables are easy to maneuver, see around while driving, and easy to pop up. If you like to camp lightly and have more off-road options available to you, the Aliner Ranger and Titanium models might be just right. Here are some Aliner Rangers for sale and here are some Aliner Titaniums as well.
Whether you are headed to the campground or to a peaceful riverside getaway, there are some great overnight adventure RV camping options with your Land Rover Defender. Happy camping!

Land Rover Defender 110 Suspension Deep Dive
It’s nothing like the stripped-down defender of old, but did anyone really expect it to be.
The old Land Rover Defender is one of those vehicles I’ve occasionally seen on the trail, but never laid hands on. As time has passed, values have shot so far up into the stratosphere that most have become pampered driveway decorations. My neighbor two streets over has a 1990s Defender 90 2-door like that, and he was also the first in my area that bought a new 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 4-door.
Parked next to each other, the differences were plain to see as I repeatedly studied them on my regular evening walk. The stylists of the new Defender 110 did much to capture the essence of the old icon, but there’s no denying his restored Defender 90 is a brute by comparison. By far the biggest difference is the suspension, which on the old truck consists of solid front and rear axles and coil springs — much like a Jeep Wrangler or a similar-vintage 80-series Toyota Land Cruiser .
The new Defender, on the other hand, rides on a unibody chassis that is propped up by four-wheel independent suspension and air springs. This makes it a much better vehicle to own as a daily driver, but it also sacrifices some hardcore off-road capability. What have they done, exactly? I recently got my hands on a 2020 Land Rover Defender 100 SE to find out.
Before I really got started, of course, I drove it up my RTI ramp. I measured a score of 486 points. Land Rover does not specify articulation in terms of RTI score, but they do say the maximum articulation is 19.7 inches. I take that to mean wheel lift on a ramp like this, which is what I measure. Running their number through my formula, which factors in the Defender 110’s actual wheelbase of 119 inches, I get 484 points.
So my measurement is basically spot on, but I must point out that my own 4Runner can manage 555 points in this test.
Up front, the Defender 110 rides on what looks like a double wishbone front suspension with a very high-mounted upper control arm (yellow arrow) and an air spring (green). It’s similar in concept to the newest iterations of the Range Rover and Discovery. But is the lower arm (red) really a single wishbone?
No. It’s a dual-pivot arrangement with two discreet links (green), each with their own outer ball joint. That’s not much of a surprise, because that’s consistent with what we’d find on the Range Rover and Discovery. Higher up, the air spring completely envelops the electronically adjustable damper (yellow), which bolts to an aluminum fork (red) that splits around the drive axle before it bolts to the lower lateral link.
It’s a bit easier to see the two lower links and their individual outer ball joints (yellow) here. This arrangement moves the steering axis to a virtual pivot outboard of the two physical pivots, to a point that’s closer to the inner edge of the brake rotor than is physically possible.
The lateral link feeds cornering loads into the chassis through an inboard pivot bushing (green) that is fairly small and rigid. Meanwhile, the angled forward link is more concerned with bracing the wheel in the fore-aft direction. Its inboard pivot (red) employs a larger-volume bushing with softer rubber that is designed to take the harsh edge off the rearward component of encounters with potholes or off-road rocks.
The two links are stacked one above the other in close proximity, which indicates the engineers were not trying to move the virtual pivot point a great distance. What’s more, the fact that these links mount down from above creates more open space beneath them for greater local ground clearance.
Here’s a closer look at the spring/shock mounting fork and how it mounts to a point on the lower lateral arm that is about 75 percent of the way out from the inner pivot. This creates a 0.75-to-1 motion ratio with respect to vertical tire motion for both the air spring and the adjustable damper.
I really appreciate the clearly recognizable padded jack point (green) that makes it easy to figure out where to safely lift the truck in a place that keeps the jack stand mounting point readily accessible.
I have to admire the packaging density of this suspension. Here we can see how the stabilizer bar (yellow) snakes up and around the drive axle, then down to a low point that allows a connecting link (green) to mount high up on the shock mounting fork. What this means is the stabilizer bar has the same 0.75-to-1 motion ratio as the spring and shock because all three ultimately join to the lower link at the same point.
The upper control arm (yellow) is yet another aluminum piece, and its extreme high mounting point creates a long lever arm that lowers the stresses in the upper pivot points and upper ball joint.
This high-mount upper wishbone position, shown here at something approaching full compression with the tire back on, allows the pivot point to be farther outboard than it could be otherwise. The downside is that bigger tires won’t easily fit, and if you employ spacers or a different wheel offset to gain clearance you end up messing with all the work the suspension design engineers did to put the steering axis exactly where they wanted it. That’s an issue with most any off-road mod, but you’ve got fewer options here.
The upper end of the co-axial air spring and damper mounts to an underhood shock tower that looks pretty familiar. There’s also a stress bar (yellow) that ties the two shock towers to each other, as well as the firewall. Zoom in closer and you’ll see an air line (green) feeding the air bag , and a control wire (red) that goes down the center of the shaft of the damper to regulate the adaptive damping.
There’s more going on here than you might imagine. First, that’s a 4-piston fixed caliper (yellow) that’s made of aluminum. The rotor is a two-piece design, with a toothed hub (green) that allows the rotor to float laterally to quell vibration. The caliper is mounted aft because the steering (red) acts forward of the axle shaft — a configuration that’s common when front-mounted engines are set longitudinally.
But I know what you’re thinking. What’s that lump bolted to the steering arm? It seems too light to be a mass damper. It’s also suspiciously lined up with a prominent ridge cast into the caliper itself.
With the wheel back on, you can see it comes very close to the barrel of the rim. That tells me this is a mud scraper, there to keep debris from wedging between the caliper and rim on the other side. The ridge on the caliper cast seems like insurance .
Back at the rear, we again see something that’s pretty familiar. Range Rovers and Defenders have this arrangement, and it’s even similar to the back end of the Jaguar i-Pace. From here we can see an air spring (yellow), a shock absorber (green), and a single aluminum upper link (red).
This view pretty much shows the same parts close up. The air spring seems to be held in place by a simple clip, and the air supply line (yellow) snakes in at the top. The lone upper link is fairly long, and curves up under the unibody.
Here we can see a massive lower wishbone (yellow), with two inner pivot points and one connection to the knuckle. There’s another link forward of it, and it seems to have an eccentric cam (green) on its inner end, but it’s hard to make out what’s going on.
Here we can see how the forward link (yellow) attaches to the forward part of the knuckle, and how its eccentric cam must make it a toe link. The lower wishbone (green) attaches to the rear of the knuckle, so the two of them together are all that’s needed to keep the bottom of the knuckle properly positioned.
That’s fine, but what’s to keep the top of the knuckle from flopping around? After all, we only saw one link up there.
This short black link (yellow) is called an integral link, and it does that job. It also gives this suspension type its name: integral link suspension. Brake and acceleration torque can not cause the upper end of the knuckle to twist about despite the single upper link because the integral link puts a stop to it.
But the integral link has to have something to react against that torque, and that something is the lower wishbone we’ve seen earlier. But it’s not the A-shaped wishbone we usually see, it’s a H-shaped one, with a fourth arm (green) that’s twisted up into this high position.
This is all pretty genius from a packaging standpoint, but it’s not what comes to mind when I think of a long-travel off-road suspension. It does provide good ride comfort and predictable handling, though.
Meanwhile, the very long shock absorber (yellow) runs down between the legs of the H to bolt directly to the knuckle for a 1-to-1 motion ratio — less an insignificant smidge for its angle of lean, of course.
The rear shock absorber (yellow) has a piggyback remote reservoir, a move that increases the oil volume to help the shock run cooler over washboard dirt roads. We can also see the rear stabilizer bar link, but it mounts to the extra H-arm leg (green) that goes to the integral link, not the knuckle.
Here we can see that the motion ratio of the rear air spring is about 0.5-to-1 because it mounts roughly halfway between the inner and outer pivots. The stabilizer bar link, which is peeking below the edge (green), seems to be mounted about the same distance out, so I’ll give it the same score.
The stabilizer bar itself is mounted above the lower H-arm, and its pivot bushings are protected by heat shields (yellow) because they’re close to the muffler. Meanwhile, this is also a good view of the single-piston sliding rear brake caliper (red) and the electronic parking brake actuator bolted to the back of it.
You can see from the witness marks how the spring bellows rolls down over what is called the piston (yellow) as the suspension compresses. Interestingly, the characteristics of an air spring — linear rate, progressive rate, etc. — can be adjusted by the profile shape of the piston. It’s not easy to say with certainty how this one is configured because we’re not seeing the spring at its normal loaded height, but the change in diameter near the bottom will tend to make it stiffen as it compresses.
The top of the piston could contain an internal bump stop that does its work inside the air bar, or the rear suspension bump stop could be located at the top of the shock absorber. Either way, we can’t see it, and I was not able to confirm which is correct with a Land Rover engineer.
Like the front, the ventilated rear brake rotor uses a two-piece design that consists of a toothed hub and a floating rotor.
My Defender came on 255/60R20 tires — 32 inches tall, in old money — on 8.5 x 20” rims. The mounted assembly weighs 76 pounds. Big wheels and short side walls are not a great combination if saving weight is your goal, but I suppose it could have been worse. And there’s no denying the abundance of aluminum in the suspension that keeps total unsprung mass in check.
In the grand scheme of things, the underpinnings of the new Land Rover Defender 110 are no surprise if you’ve been following the recent evolution of the Range Rover and Discovery. In that family context, the Defender 110 fits right in. It’s nothing like the stripped-down Defender of old, but did anyone really expect it to be?

- This Land Rover Defender 6×6 Restomod Is a Road Beast With Good Manners
Manz Motor Company’s $400,000 restomod is a gentler version of the original three-axle model, but rear passengers may still have problems.

That transfer case looks and functions very similarly to that of a Mercedes-Benz Unimog ’s portal axles, with an onboard air compressor to engage it and gears that send power up and over the middle axle to a propshaft that continues rearward. But Manz decided not to re-gear the Defender 6×6’s final drive ratios, despite stepping up to 35-inch tires. Braking components from Wilwood help to rein in all that significant weight and power, so this vehicle never feels unwieldy at highway speeds.
The classic seating position rides high and vertical, allowing for plenty of visibility over the hood. And offset pedals may entice some drivers to immediately begin left-foot braking. Behind the front buckets, the rear seats provide minimal legroom and require a similarly upright posture that may become uncomfortable on longer road trips. Then there’s the half-rack in the bed, which prevents much use of the troop-carrier-style rear bench either. Drawbacks to be sure.
Another sticking point for me was that a few modern touches throughout the build tend to clash with the overall appearance and spirit, especially the carbon-fiber hood and the digital push-button gear selector on the center console, both of which seem entirely out of place. But Manz will spec a true gearshift lever to match the transfer-case shifter in classic style, and specific build preferences can drop the use of carbon fiber altogether.
Land Rover originally built a small run of Defender 6×6 to serve as troop transports, ambulances, and safari vehicles. As for Manz Motor Company’s $400,000 reinterpretation, it was developed as an engineering exercise to attract attention to the company’s more typical Defender projects, which it plans to limit to four to six builds per year, each with current lead times that fall in the six-month range.

2025 Defender adds more luxury to capable off-roader
The Defender enters the 2025 model year with few changes, though there are items that enhance the vehicle's luxury, and others that should make things easier at ordering time.
The new model year brings the availability of packages that group many popular individual options. Among the new packs are some that enhance the driving qualities, others that improve capability in cold weather or when towing, and a few that increase comfort.
Examples include an Off-Road Pack that includes an electronic active differential, roof racks, all-terrain tires, and a wade sensing feature. This can then be joined by an Advanced Off-Road Pack that adds air suspension, off-road driving modes, and more.
For the interior, there are packs like the Comfort and Convenience Pack which adds ambient lighting, a premium Meridian audio system, and a front console refrigerator. A Premium Upgrade Interior Pack adds extra leather trim and 14-way heated and cooled front seats with memory function.

Buyers of the stretched Defender 130 will be able to opt for captain's chairs for the first time, which will make accessing the third row easier. The captain's chairs feature heating and cooling functions, as well as individual armrests.
The Defender can also be ordered with a matte-finish protective film.
Powertrains carry over unchanged. Depending on the grade, buyers can choose from a 2.0-liter turbo-4 rated at 296 hp, a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 mild-hybrid rated at 395 hp, or a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 rated at either 493 or 518 hp. For buyers seeking ultimate performance, JLR will reveal the new Defender Octa grade on July 3. This will be a hardcore offering powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 likely spitting out over 600 hp.
The 2025 Defender is priced from $58,375 for the two-door Defender 90, from $62,275 for the four-door Defender 110, and from $71,175 for the stretched Defender 130. All figures include a $1,475 destination charge.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page
Pages: 379-406
In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
