As part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve just north of the Ring Road, this territory is known for its colourful rhyolite mountains, an extensive network of hiking trails, and natural hot spring activity. There are plenty of tours and excursions in Landmannalaugar for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

This breathtaking zone rests at the edge of the Laugahraun lava field, which was created during a volcanic event nearly 550 years ago. The colourful mountains and gorgeous scenery combined with a plethora of outdoor activities make a Landmannalaugar hike or Super Jeep excursion  a must-do on any trip to Iceland. You’ll either need to rent a 4x4 vehicle of your own or go with an official tour operator.

The main road leading to Landmannalaugar is F208 if you plan on making the drive yourself. Landmannalaugar Tours and Excursions

Some of the most popular tours and excursions in the area are the Landmannalaugar Jeep tour, the Northern Lights Tour from Reykjavik, and the Thórsmörk tour. These three very different options give you the chance to discover the diverse parts of Iceland’s interior.

You’ll travel with a trained, experienced guide who will show you the different types of territory in the region. Crossing rivers and valleys or driving past windswept mountains and rolling hills will no doubt be a highlight of your Iceland vacation.

The Northern Lights  are Mother Nature’s magical nighttime light show in the sky. See the dazzling waves of emerald and violet undulating high above. An Aurora Borealis hunt will take you in search of the natural phenomenon unique to the most extreme ends of our planet.

Thórsmörk is a stunning valley in Landmannalaguar named after the Norse god Thor. Be sure to bring your camera on this five-hour adventure packed with glaciers, volcanoes, and other out of this world scenery. And of course, be prepared to do some light hiking. This area is a top destination for hikers who come to Iceland thanks to the large number of trails and diverse landscape.

Day Trips from Reykjavik

Taking a day trip from Reykjavik is a wonderful way to explore Landmannalaugar by bus. For travelers who only have one or two days to enjoy the charms of this region, a Landmannalaugar day tour is the perfect choice. You’ll have the option to head back to Reykjavik that evening or stay at one of the area’s mountain huts. If you choose to spend the night, you'll need to arrange your accommodation separately. Hiking and Trekking in the Icelandic Highlands

Hiking and taking a dip in Landmannalaugar hot springs are another favourite pastime of visitors to the area. With mountain huts and hiking trails abound, this is a great zone for grabbing your backpack, hiking boots, and hiking pole and hitting the paths if you want to take a Landmannalaugar Hike . Looking at a Landmannalaugar trek map, you’ll see that it’s the starting point of the northern end of the Laugavegur Trail. The rhyolite mountains, multicoloured volcanic scenery and a wide variety of landscapes make the Laugavegur hiking trail Iceland’s most popular. From crackling black lava fields to colourful rolling hills, outdoor lover’s will marvel at the geological diversity contained in such a small area. Some of the terrains are quite uneven, so make sure you’ve packed the right shoes for this activity.

The seemingly endless number of hiking trails in Thórsmörk means you can select an easy and short two to three-hour trek or a longer, multi-day hiking adventure. The Thórsmörk hike (Þórsmörk in Icelandic) on the Laugavegur Trail goes from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk (Thor’s Valley) and is perfect for experienced hikers. This 55 km (34-mile) trek takes most people three to five days to complete. Some adventurers even extend it to Skógar on the southern side of Eyjafjallajokull volcano. When hiking in the area, be sure to bring your swimsuit in case you want to take a dip in a Landmannalaugar hot spring.

Camping in Landmannalaugar

Got anything special in mind?

One of the best things about visiting the Icelandic Highlands is stopping to rest and spend the night at a campsite or mountain hut. This is really a roughing it, get back to nature type of experience. The huts are like cabins with hard sleep surfaces where you unroll your sleeping bag and spend the night. The Landmannalaugar camping price for the huts ranges from 5500 to 9000 ISK per person per night. The huts are in high demand, so make your booking as soon as possible. You can also camp close to the huts but will have to pay to use their facilities.

The Famous Ferðafélag Íslands Mountain Huts

The Icelandic Touring Association (Ferðafélag Íslands or FÍ) is in charge of around 40 mountain huts all around the island. Be sure to book your accommodation along popular routes, such as the Laugavegur trail, far in advance. The facilities are usually minimal and you’ll have to bring and cook your own food with you on your hike.

Many of the huts have running water and water toilets. The smaller ones of 10-20 beds may require you to use an outhouse or latrine. You may also have to fetch your own water from a nearby water source like a stream or river.

Visit their website to learn more. There’s information about prices, booking, when the huts are open, frequently asked questions, and more. When visiting Landmannalaugar, be sure to include sleeping bags on your packing list. The mountain huts provide anywhere from 10-72 beds for travellers but do not provide bedding or blankets. They are relatively warm, so an Arctic-grade sleeping bag isn't required.

A visit to Landmannalaugar, Iceland is something you have to do while visiting our beautiful country. You’ll be amazed by the unforgettable landscapes and incredible views you find here. Be sure to take a tour or excursion and take a trek along one of the famous hiking paths, such as the Laugavegur Trail to Thórsmörk.

The guides were incredible! They were story tellers, jokesters, informative, helpful, adventurous, positive, safety conscious and always prompt. The tours in the package were amazing! The whole tour was exciting and uplifting! The positive and grateful attitude of the Icelandic people was a joy. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

Ren

Amazing trip! There were 4 couples on the Jeep. The driver lady was very experienced, kind, and down to earth. The orange trail hike at the Landmannalaugar took us little bit over an hour. The temperature there was lower and it can be slippery with the snow covering the trail in October, but we were able to make it with good hiking shoes and shell jackets. So keep in mind if you want to go in less popular seasons. The scenery along the way definitely worth it.

We start our journey from Reykjavik and drive through the Hellisheidi mountain pass, crossing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We shall go through the Fjorsardalur valley along the Fjorsa River in Iceland’s southern highlands, with many beautiful sights. Fjorsardalur is within line of view of the infamous volcano Hekla.

Our first stop will be at Hjalparfoss, the pair of waterfalls formed where the Fossa and Fjorsa rivers meet and fall at an angle of forty-five degrees to each other, their cascades merging into a serene pool.

We shall make another stop near the mountainous area of the Sigoldufoss waterfall, which was transformed during the construction of the hydroelectric power station. It has been part of the Tungna glacial river for centuries or more. When the power plant was built, the glacial water was redirected into a tunnel to turn the turbines. On the waterfall site, only a small river with beautiful green-blue water flows now.

Next, we drive along a gravel road and stop at Frostastadavatn Lake, with a breathtaking landscape of colorful rhyolite mountains and black lava fields. The lake is located 573 meters above sea level. Like other lakes, it is rich in trout and, therefore, famous for anglers and travelers.

Our leading destination of the day is Landmannalaugar, where the Laugavegur and many other famous routes lie, including the path to the mighty Brennisteinsalda mountain. Visitors can also follow the Blauhnukkur volcano trail, which offers stunning views of five glaciers on clear days.

For tourists in Landmannalaugar, six tourist routes are marked. To more or less get acquainted with lava fields and formations and see colored mountains, we recommend walking along Path 1 (4 km, 1.5-2 hours) along with the Laugaraun lava field, the Brennisteinsalda, and Graenagil or along Path 2 ( 5.7 km. 2.5-3.5 hours) together with the Blauhnukkur volcano. And, of course, we plan to relax and bask in the natural hot springs near the campsite.

On the way back, we will take the road through the Domadalur valley and approach Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano. This volcano has inspired many myths and legends and created more lava fields than elsewhere. The last eruption of Hekla was in 2000, and, fortunately, now the volcano remains inactive, but scientists regularly monitor its volcanic activity.

Then, we return to Ring Road and drive back to Reykjavik.

Please note: the itinerary is subject to change depending on weather and road conditions.

13 Tips for a Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar, Iceland Day Trip

Iceland's moss-covered lava rock

Iceland’s landscape is often called “otherworldly.” “Like being on another planet.” Nowhere is that more evident than on the drive from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar in Iceland’s interior.

As you leave the colorful capital of Reykjavik and head towards the Icelandic Highlands, the paved road becomes a rough, gravel route called an F-road, and the landscape morphs into moss-covered black lava fields. It’s a bumpy and breathtaking drive – proving this Iceland day trip is just as much about the journey as it is the destination.

The scene becomes even more dramatic as you near the Fjallabak Nature Reserve which includes the geothermal area of Landmannalaugar. A kind of volcanic rock called rhyolite creates a colorful landscape. You’ll know you’re close when you spot red, orange, and yellow hues marking the mountains.

I knew the rugged drive to Landmannalaugar would be worthwhile, but I couldn’t help feeling a little apprehensive. Driving to Landmannalaugar ourselves, I didn’t know how we would fare navigating the rough F-roads and river crossings. In the end, we loved our Landmannalaugar adventure and learned a few things along the way. The most important being that planning is key for a day trip from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar!

Below, we compiled our top 13 tips to help you get the most out of this thrilling Landmannalaugar, Iceland day trip. Enjoy!

Things to Know for a Day Trip from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar, Iceland

steam rising from mountain in Landmannalaugar

1. The best time to visit Landmannalaugar is mid-June to mid-September.

Summer is peak tourist time in Iceland and for good reason. The weather is warmer – perfect for outdoor adventures – and summer sees an extreme amount of daylight. July can see 21 hours of daylight in a 24-hour period! Also, many roads leading to Landmannalaugar close during winter weather, so plan your Iceland day trip for the summer months.

2. Driving to Landmannalaugar yourself is worth the experience.

There are a couple different routes taking you from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar, each promising a scenic adventure. Whichever one you choose, the drive will include otherworldly panoramas inspiring you to pull over often for pictures. Driving to Landmannalaugar yourself lets you go at your own pace, stop when you want to, and take it all in.

If you’re a little hesitant to make the drive, just know that the drive is perfectly manageable and worth it for the adventure of experiencing Iceland’s raw and wild terrain.

3. There are other options if you don’t feel comfortable driving to Landmannalaugar.

If you don’t feel comfortable driving from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar yourself, it’s still worth a day trip. The options below offer a similar experience with less stress.

The Highland Bus from Reykjavik Excursions is a once daily bus that drives people to Landmannalaugar, arriving by 11:30 a.m. and departing for the return journey at 3:45 p.m. Tickets cost around $170 USD roundtrip. This is not a guided tour, but simply bus transport.

If you’re looking for a guided trip, these are some fun and stress-free options:

4. Only 4×4 vehicles are permitted to drive on Iceland’s F-roads.

The route from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar includes traveling on unpaved and not well-maintained mountain roads called F-roads. By law, you need a 4×4 vehicle to drive these roads. If you’re renting a vehicle, double check to make sure the 4×4 you’re renting is authorized to go on Iceland’s F-roads.

5. Your route from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar may include river crossings.

River crossings are common in the Iceland Highlands and can be a little unnerving if you’ve never driven through one before. In typical conditions the water is not very deep, and the crossing is uncomplicated, but you’ll want to be prepared. Refer to this Iceland river crossing guide before you go: Guide to Iceland river crossings

If you want to steer clear of river crossings, the route you should take is F26 to F208 from the north. However, if you’re up for the adventure, coming in from the west on F225 includes crossing a few rivers in your vehicle.

Iceland river crossings can be the most nerve-racking part of the drive for many people. It was for me. After the drive, however, I realized there was no reason to be as freaked out as I was about them. Drivers do have to be careful and assess the conditions of the river before crossing, but most often they are very manageable. Click for current Iceland road conditions .

6. Get an early start to your day.

This Iceland day trip will take most of your day so it’s best to get an early start. The drive from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar is roughly 3 hours and 15 minutes. Once there, you’ll want to spend your time taking in the colorful landscape and tackling a hike or two. An early morning start helps you maximize your time, fit everything into your day, and can help you beat the crowds during peak season.

7. Take advantage of scenic stops along the drive.

If you follow tip #6 and get an early start to your day, you’ll have time to stop and sightsee along the way. On your drive to Landmannalaugar, you’ll no doubt be eager to get to the colorful mountainous destination. You’ll also be concentrating on navigating the tricky F-roads. But don’t miss the opportunity to stop and check out some other scenic landforms you come across.

While most of the drive is barren, bumpy, rough, and remote, the different routes also take you near a waterfall, volcano, canyon, river, and the most serene lake I’ve ever seen: Frostastaðavatn near the junction of F208 and F225.

serene lake amidst mountains

8. Bring layers to wear.

Iceland’s weather can change quickly. You’ll want to bring layers for your day trip so you can put on or take off clothing as needed. Depending on the conditions the day you’re visiting you may need sunscreen and hat for shade or a jacket and gloves to stay warm. Either way you’ll want good walking/hiking shoes for the day.

9. Hike or walk the Laugahraun Lava Field loop.

There are a variety of scenic hikes in Landmannalaugar – around a lava field, up mountain summits, and even multi-day hikes. But a day trip from Reykjavik means you only have so much time to work with.

An easy and picturesque hike to fit into your Landmannalaugar visit is the loop trail around the Laugahraun Lava Field.

Hiking in Landmannalaugar

The trail is roughly 3 miles long and includes rock scrambling, following a stream, traversing geothermal spots and lava rocks, and easy detours if you’re interested in climbing one of the peaks. This rewarding hike offers fabulous views of the colorful mountains making it a popular activity.

10. Pack a swimsuit and towel if you want to soak in the natural hot spring.

Soaking in a natural hot spring is a great way to unwind after a hike and before making the drive back to Reykjavik. The Landmannalaugar Hot Springs is conveniently located right off the boardwalks near the information hut. Sit, relax, and immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings with awe-inspiring views of colorful mountains and lava fields.

11. Fill up on gas before you leave Reykjavik.

Landmannalaugar is a very remote part of the Iceland Highlands. There are no gas stations there, so you’ll need to fill your tank with gas before you leave Reykjavik for the journey there and back.

12. Bring enough food and snacks for the day.

Landmannalaugar has a bus parked onsite that sells a limited variety of snacks and essentials, but there are no other stores, restaurants, supermarkets, or even any type of civilization nearby. You’ll want to bring enough food to get you through the day.

tents set up beside mountains and lava rock

13. The onsite bathrooms require a fee.

One good thing is there are bathrooms available for use at Landmannalaugar. The bad thing is they charge you a fee: 500 króna (roughly $3.50 USD)

On the other hand, Granni, meaning “neighbor,” is slightly smaller than Háifoss and its water flows over two ledges before reaching the canyon floor. During the spring and early summer months, when the snow upstream is melting, these waterfalls are at their most voluminous, showcasing the force of nature in all its glory. What makes these falls even more special is their remote location, off the beaten track, ensuring that you won’t need to frame your photos to avoid crowds. It’s a pristine and untouched natural wonder that offers a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience.

Háifoss and Granni waterfalls in Golden Circle Iceland

As we make our way towards Landmannalaugar, our first stop is the mesmerizing Hjálparfoss. Nestled in the picturesque Þjórsárdalur valley, Hjálparfoss is a double-pronged waterfall adorned with striking basalt formations, remnants of an ancient eruption from the nearby Hekla volcano. What makes these falls truly unique is that they mark the meeting point of two rivers, the Þjórsá (Iceland’s longest river) and the Fossá.

In the past, the pool that forms at the base of the falls provided relief and water to weary travelers coming from the north, which gave it its name, Hjálparfoss, which translates to “Help Falls” in English. It’s a testament to the significance of this natural wonder as a source of aid and respite for travelers in the past, adding a touch of history and intrigue to its already captivating beauty.

Hnausapollur Volcanic Crater Lake

Formed during a massive simultaneous eruption of Barðabunga and Torfajökull volcanoes over 1200 years ago, Hnausapollur is a testament to the raw power of nature. Also known as Bláhlynur, or “Blue Ponds,” the lake’s name is a nod to the mesmerizing turquoise blue hue of its waters. With its serene beauty and intriguing geological history, Hnausapollur is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences in Iceland.

Although the area typically becomes accessible for day tours in June, depending on the impact of spring meltwaters on the roads, caution is advised as the rough F-roads are only suitable for 4×4 vehicles. Fortunately, our sturdy highland bus is well-equipped to handle the challenge.

Renowned for its unique and colorful terrain, featuring rhyolite hills and lava fields, Landmannalaugar is a paradise for hikers. Accompanied by an experienced guide, you’ll embark on a 1.5-2 hour hike of easy to moderate difficulty, rewarded with awe-inspiring views, photo opportunities, and a sense of accomplishment. Alternatively, you can choose to explore at your own pace, reveling in the remoteness and tranquility of the surroundings, before regrouping with the guide. And what better way to conclude a hike than by soaking your weary feet in a natural hot spring? Just remember to pack your swimsuit!

In addition to its scenic trails, Landmannalaugar also serves as the starting and ending point for Iceland’s most renowned trek, the 55-kilometer Laugarvegur trail to Thorsmörk. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a nature enthusiast, Landmannalaugar promises a memorable experience amidst its breathtaking landscapes.

Close your eyes for a moment…

I want you to imagine a land full of vibrant-colored rhyolite mountains, lava fields, and geothermal steam vents.

If you’re picturing The Land Before Time , you’re not far off!

Located in the Highlands of Iceland, Landmannalaugar is a gem that’s definitely off the beaten path but totally worth seeing.

It takes around 3 hours and 15 minutes to drive from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar, so you can schedule this as a day trip, or there are accommodation options if you plan on extending your stay.

For hiking enthusiasts or nature lovers who swoon over otherworldly landscapes, this is a must on your to-do list!

Remember that the Highlands of Iceland are colder than the areas around the coast, therefore it’s SUPER important to bring warmer clothes with you.

Always be prepared from head to toe with rain gear as well, because this is Iceland after all and you know… the weather does what it wants !

The average temperature from June – August is 7-13 degrees Celsius (45-55 Fahrenheit).

In the summer months, you can expect sun, wind and rain.

Landmannalaugar in winter is completely inaccessible , and the F-Roads leading into this area don’t open until at least mid-June.

Therefore, you can only access this area in the summer, and the roads will be open from mid-June until the end of August – sometimes into the middle of September, depending on when it starts to snow.

How to Get to Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is located in the central highlands and part of Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the interior part of the country.

It can be accessed in three different ways: From the south, west, and north.

The south is the most difficult because there are major river crossings and the road is bad.

The west is the most common and a little bit faster, but I like taking the north access because there are a few hidden gems along the way, and if you know me, there’s no way I’m passing up that opportunity!

Okay, we’ve got the routes, now let’s take a look at how to physically get there.

Picture of a Defender Car Going Up the Hill in Landmannalaugar, Iceland | Iceland with a View

Your first option is to drive yourself.

These are the roads to take, depending on which direction you’re coming from: F26 and F208 from the north, F225 from the West, or F208 from the South.

If you’re planning on driving yourself, you will absolutely, without question, need to get a 4WD vehicle. These roads are the F-Roads, and a 4WD is non-negotiable.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the roads that lead into Landmannalaugar are very bumpy, full of potholes and they’re not paved and you also have to cross some rivers.

Pro tip : You need to make sure, before you head into Landmannalaugar, that your vehicle is full of fuel because there aren’t fuel stations around for at least 40 miles and you don’t want to get stuck!

I highly suggest checking out my F-Road video. This will teach you everything you need to know about driving on those roads and the kind of vehicle that’s required.

Another way to get there is to take a bus or excursion.

You could hire a company like Reykjavík Excursions or Trex, and it’s possible to do a  Landmannalaugar day trip.

During the summer, they operate regularly from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar and travelers can board at nearby towns along the route.

So, if you want to get dropped off, do some hiking, and then head out on a bus, it’s possible.

Or if you prefer to stay overnight, simply arrange your accommodation or bring your tent. This way, you can enjoy hiking and catch a bus out when you’re ready.

Another option to reach Landmannalaugar involves hiking from Thórsmörk.

For the adventurous and well-prepared, the Laugavegurinn trail spans 34 miles from Thórsmörk to Landmannalaugar.

I’ll go into further detail about this trail below.

Take the guesswork out of planning to Iceland’s most difficult area to travel to. This Travel Guide will help you plan an unforgettable Highlands trip from start to finish.

Things to Do in Landmannalaugar

Most people who travel to this part of the country want to try out the hiking trails and you should too! But, there are also other cool things to do on your visit. Let’s find out what they are.

Picture of Jeannie at the Top of Bláhnjúkur Hike in Landmannalaugar, Iceland | Iceland with a View

Not only is it an incredibly beautiful area to hike, but there are a lot of Landmannalaugar trails to choose from.

Bláhnjúkur, Mount Brennisteinsalda, and Laugahraun: These are some of the most common Landmannalaugar trekking routes in the area. Laugahraun is the most popular route that goes through a lava field and it’s great for all ages.

If you are heading into Landmannalaugar, I recommend being dropped off at the main base camp and checking the local maps to decide how much time you have, and what the trek looks like, as well as speaking with the wardens about the conditions.

Laugavegurinn : Explore mountains, lava fields, volcanic craters, and geothermal springs on this hike. But be warned – theLaugavegurinn trail is not for the faint of heart!

It covers a 34-mile-long hiking trail from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk, and it’s usually done over four days. It’s made up of four parts:

  • Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker
  • Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn
  • Álftavatn to Emstrur
  • Emstrur to Thórsmörk

It’s an intense journey and not recommended for inexperienced hikers .

There’s a LOT of planning involved, including securing campsites well in advance.

Pro tip : Always make sure you leave your travel plans with safetravel.is . If you’re venturing into the Highlands, you’ll be navigating treacherous roads and possibly hiking in remote areas where you rarely see other people.

It’s crucial that someone is aware of your whereabouts in case of an emergency.

If you’d like to see what a hike here looks like, take a peek at this video! 👇🏼

Another fun activity you can do is horseback riding.

Picture yourself on an Icelandic horse, feeling the crisp mountain air on your face as you experience some of the most amazing scenery Iceland has to offer.

If that doesn’t sound awesome, I don’t know what does!

If you’re into fishing, then you’ll be happy to know that there are a few lakes around the area where you cast a line.

Lakes include Bláhylur Lake and Ljótipollur, known for its abundance of trout.

Who knows, you might just reel in the catch of the day while surrounded by Landmannalaugar’s stunning scenery!

One of the coolest hot springs in Iceland is located here, and trust me, this is the perfect way to end a hard day of hiking!

It’s free of charge (with camping admission) to soak in these springs and Mount Brennisteinsaldais right there, just to add to the scenery that’s out of this world! If you’re not camping at Landmannalaugar, you can pay a facility fee to use the springs.

If you’re looking for more awesome hot springs in Iceland that are FREE, be sure to check out the post below.👇

Thankfully, waterfalls are abundant in Iceland! If you’re like me and take any chance you can get to see one, then you’re in luck when traveling to the highlands because you can spot waterfalls like Háifoss, Granni, Hjálparfoss, and Sigöldufoss.

➡️ Tour: Landmannalaugar Hiking, Nature Bath & Háifoss Tour

If you’re visiting the Highlands of Iceland, a Landmannalaugar tour is a great way to see the area, especially if you’re worried about driving those F-Roads.

Another plus about taking a tour is that you usually get to see a lot of sights in one excursion because the guides know the lay of the land.

Experience the Hekla volcano and lakes, dip in a natural hot spring, and see the lava fields and Hjálparfoss all in one tour. Check out the details below.

Usually, when people take a Landmannalaugar tour, they only opt for a day trip. However, if you do want to stay overnight, there are a couple of different accommodation options available.

Landmannalaugar serves as the primary base camp in Fjallabak.

The first option is to set up at the base camp. Here you will find an indoor eating hall, toilets, showers, maps, and a huge outdoor area where you can set up your tent or RV. This is where you would most likely stay as a traveler.

Landmannalaugar huts : These mountain huts at the base camp can accommodate 75 people and there’s a hot spring close by. Camping: Landmannalaugar base camp is also a great place to park your campervan. I recently took a road trip with the family and rented a Happy Camper Van and I highly recommend their 4×4 van for Landmannalaugar camping!

Accommodation Options Along The Laugavegurinn Trail

Since Landmannalaugar marks the start of the popular Laugavegurinn Trail, you might be wondering what accommodation options are available along the trek.

If you’re not tent camping, there are a bunch of mountain huts you can book along the trail to Thórsmörk.

I suggest booking your mountain hut quite far in advance because there aren’t a lot of them and they book up fast.

The specific stops along the Laugavegurinn Trail you will want to spend the night at are Hrafntinnusker , Álftavatn , Emstrur , and Thórsmörk (the trek’s end at the Básar base camp). Looking for a bit more flexibility?

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly and flexible way to experience Iceland, you’re going to want to check out this post.👇

Picture of the Famous Café Bus Named Mountain Mall in Iceland | Iceland with a View

Don’t expect to find any fancy restaurants or coffee shops here!

Dining options are extremely limited.

At the base camp in Landmannalaugar, there’s an old bus that’s been converted into a café/tiny store named Mountain Mall that has some of your basics and essentials.

Of course, it’s going to be more expensive, but it is nice just in case you don’t have everything with you or you or you need something urgently.

Since hot food isn’t available for purchase, you need to bring your own food along. The good news? When it comes to water, you don’t need to buy a thing – the rivers are all drinkable so be sure to bring your water bottle . You can also refill from the sink/tap at the base camp!
