Mexican Riviera Cruises

Sail along the Mexican Riviera for a cruise vacation filled with unforgettable memories and thrilling activities.

Mexican Riviera cruises are exciting and offer something for all types of travelers. Revel in the beautiful weather as you enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of the region, including gorgeous beaches, coves, cliffs and even deserts. View awe-inspiring cliff divers at night for a thrilling spectacle, or fish for your dinner with the locals. Surfing, sailing, scuba diving and sports, not to mention sculptures and souvenirs.

Welcome to the Riviera, future Mexico cruisers.

Things to Do on a Cruise to the Mexican Riviera

The Mexican Riviera is to the West Coast what the Caribbean is to the East Coast, a nearby getaway perfect for a cruise. The Mexican Riviera has been a popular destination for centuries and has become known as more than just a spring break destination for college kids. Featured below are some of the best ways to spend your time cruising through the Mexican Riviera:

Quebrada Cliff Diver show in Acapulco

 • The Quebrada Cliff Diver show in Acapulco is one not to be missed. Watch as these daring young men gracefully jump head first from the cliffs that line the water. At night you might find the divers completing their dives with torches in hand.
 • Watch out for whales. You’ll find many of the ports along the Mexican Riviera have excursions to spot these giants of the ocean. In La Paz you can check out the gray and blue whales in the Sea of Cortez, along with dolphins and sea lions.

Yelapa Forest waterfall

 • See a variety of wetland birds at the Copalita Eco-Archeological Park in Huatulco, Mexico. Here you can take calming walks, or explore with a hike. The park is also home to many ruins, and many believe that people were living here more than 2000 years ago.
 • Feel like an old time explorer as you ride on horseback through the Yelapa Forest, located just outside of Puerto Vallarta, to get to the beautiful waterfall.

El Arco in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

 • Get your camera ready for El Arco, an arch that was formed by ocean currents along the coast. This spot is said to be one of the most romantic spots in the country.
 • Try a fish taco in Ensenada. This quick and fresh taco that substitutes ground beef for grilled or fried fish is a popular dish with surfers and southern Californians. The dish was invented in Ensenada.

Mexican Riviera Cruise Highlights

Glorious coastal scenery.

You’ll find colorful colonial architecture in many of the towns along the Mexican Riviera. Mazatlán’s Old Town is a maze of flower-filled plazas and delightful 19th-century buildings, many now serving as restaurants and galleries. In Puerto Vallarta, admire the Zona Romantica and the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, its steeple topped with a filigree crown. Head to pretty Todos Santos, a day trip from Cabo San Lucas, to wander cobblestone streets and browse galleries.

Creative Cuisine

Mexico’s vibrant cuisine brings ever-new discoveries as you sail the Mexican Riviera. There are more than 50 wineries in the Guadalupe Valley near Ensenada, so this is the place to head for tastings. In Puerto Vallarta, don’t miss pescado embarazado, fresh fish grilled with lime on a stick over charcoal, served with tangy salsa. Cabo San Lucas is packed with fine restaurants, but you can’t beat the farm-to-table cuisine here—all washed down with an ice-cold margarita.

Manzanillo cruise port

Region Hawaii - Mexico - Panama Canal

Local Time 2024-04-26 21:38

Port Manzanillo cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Manzanillo, Mexico Riviera. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Manzanillo is a large port city in Mexico's Colima state. The port is on the Pacific Ocean and is currently ranked Mexico's busiest, also serving as seaport for the entire Mexico City metro area. Manzanillo is Colima's largest municipality specializing in resort tourism and business services. The city has population around 185,000.

Since 1957, here are hosted annually major national and international fishing competitions (including Dorsey Tournament), making it a popular deep-sea fishing destination. City's economy is based on commercial fishing (and fish processing), transport/logistics and tourism. Rail and road connections connect the seaport directly with major cities throughout Mexico. Mexico Ave (in downtown) is city's main street lined with shops and restaurants. Shopping options include Walmart Store and Plaza Manzanillo Mall.

Port Manzanillo

As a major Mexican Riviera cruise port, Manzanillo (located between Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta ) is best-known for its unique city tours (shore excursions) and great watersports activities (swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling). The city has two large bays (Manzanillo and Santiago) with 6-km/4-mi long, crescent-shaped beaches. Both are located in close proximity to the city. Santiago Bay (to the west) is popular with its wrecks and reefs. Manzanillo Bay is closer to downtown. Both bays are separated by a peninsula, on which are some of the prettiest resorts and hotels.

Since 2005, Port Manzanillo is Mexico's largest commercial port, surpassing even Veracruz. Manzanillo Harbour is comprised of Manzanillo Bay (southern harbor, industrial port) and Santiago Bay (northern harbor, cruise port).

Ship channels at the southeast end of Manzanillo Bay. Large cruise liners enter the port area there. On July 6, 2010, was inaugurated the dedicated cruise ship dock. The cruise terminal project's 2nd phase included the construction of a shopping mall.

In mid-December 2022, ICTSI/International Container Terminal Services Inc's subsidiary CMSA/Contecon Manzanillo started the Port expansion project's 3rd phase. After completion (in 2025), the Port's annual TEU-container capacity will increase from 1,4 million to 2+M TEUs. The expansion created 600+ direct jobs (1800+ total) plus ~11600 indirect jobs. The project's budget (USD 230+ million) was spent mainly on upgrading the shipping and terminal infrastructure, as well as the cargo storage yards and new TEU-handling equipment (~US$ 122M).

Manzanillo cruise terminal

Cruise ships in Manzanillo Mexico dock at the 2010-built dedicated pier (cruise terminal) located in close proximity to downtown. Alternatively, cruise liners can berth at a cargo terminal located approx 2 km east of downtown. Usually, shuttle bus service (at fee) is provided by the cruise company. Other alternatives for transportation to downtown and the beaches are regularly scheduled and frequent buses and taxis.

On a Babymoon in Mexico, Embracing an Identity Shift

By Mercedes Bleth

Floating in a warm ocean, sun on my belly—this is what I’ve dreamed of my entire pregnancy. After spending the majority of it in New York, I was caught off guard by the sudden ease I felt in my body and brain as I waded into the ocean and the weight I’d been carrying lifted off of me for the first time in months. I’ve always found the term “babymoon” a bit off-putting, overly indulgent even. It's not as widely accepted into the vacation lexicon as a honeymoon, bachelorette, or 50th birthday. In fact, the term was first coined in the early ’90s and referred to a period of time for parents to spend alone with their new child soon after their birth.

But I desperately wanted time away together, just my partner and I, to feel my pregnant body where I am happiest: immersed in a body of water, drenched in sunshine. I was about seven months pregnant when my husband and I traveled to Mexico 's Riviera Maya for a long weekend at Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection for the purpose of experiencing their new babymoon package. The quick flight time (just five hours from New York) makes the region ideal for a pregnancy trip, if tropical is your thing—and Etéreo’s tailored “ Babymoon in Paradise '' itinerary promised to make our weekend even more special.

Highlighting my pregnancy bump after spending months layered up

We chose to spend the first day of our long weekend free of activities, and after check-in and an initial tour around the property—an intimate paradise that floats peacefully above acres of lush green mangroves—we went straight for beachside shrimp tacos, an ice cold chela for Alex, and a refreshing mocktail for me. We took the afternoon to lounge by the adults-only pool, let our brains disconnect from work, and slow down to match the soothing pace of the resort. The next day at the spa, SANA, I was instructed to cover myself in a natural clay, then guided through a pregnancy-safe version of the spa's pre-cleanse ritual, rinsing the clay off in a sensory shower, and then left to float in a womb-like cenote-inspired pool, before being ushered into a serene courtyard with a cup of hibiscus tea to await my prenatal massage. As I swished my feet around in the hot tub, I marveled at the growth of my stomach on full display, the kicking feet within.

The majority of my pregnancy has taken place during New York ’s colder half of the year. I’ve spent months layered up, strategically minimizing my bump, determined, for some reason, for my pregnancy to not be the first thing people notice when they see me. Throughout me and my husband’s decision-making process, I had been so focused on what was on the other side of pregnancy—overwhelmingly excited to witness my kid’s life unfold, help them smooth out the wrinkles—that I underestimated how strange the shift of my own identity would feel, both the physical manifestation of it, and the impending addition of an entirely new noun. “Mom.” The word felt heavy, ill fitting, like the rest of my wardrobe quickly became.

During the blissful 60 minutes of my prenatal massage, I lay in the fetal position, draped over a pillow, while a masseuse gently worked out the knots that had developed along my spine over the course of my pregnancy , and in tandem, began to loosen the tangle of thoughts I’d been grappling with, the tension I felt between the excitement for the life inside of me and my resistance to the altering of my own.

Beachside shrimp tacos await

Throughout the nine months of gestation, “it’s normal” is a refrain you hear often in response to the variety of symptoms that come with pregnancy. I found myself starting to absorb the word, regarding the extraordinary thing taking place in my body as a bit ordinary. Technically speaking, it is. Millions of people have gone through this primal rite of passage since the beginning of time. But nothing about growing a human in your own body for the first time bears any resemblance to normalcy.

Couples and families with young kids looking for an easy, peaceful escape would do well to book a stay at this intimate property.

What our babymoon gave me was the chance to bask in the extraordinary act of pregnancy, and to shift focus inward toward myself, my partner, and our daughter. Walking around the resort in a bathing suit felt strange at first, then quickly, empowering—there is no disguising oneself in the 100+ degree, balmy embrace of the Yucatán .

Of the three items on the babymoon itinerary—a private dinner on the beach, an astrological reading based on the baby’s due date, and a prenatal massage—it was the astrological Prehispanic calendar reading that surprisingly ended up being our favorite. “Bebestrology” might sound a bit cringe, but we hung onto every word the astrologist told us. Our private reading took place in the wellness center inside the SANA spa, where our kind astrologist guided us through the complex workings of the Mayan calendar. She told us about our greatest challenges (eerily accurate), our life purposes and how our daughter fits in, where we can help guide her through challenges, and where she will help guide us.

We unpacked it over our Luna de Bebe dinner, a three-course pregnancy-friendly meal, set in a private palapa on the beach, with an incredibly attentive personal server. We’d been sent menu options by our assigned guia earlier that day and could choose from two appetizers, entrees, and desserts. We each opted for different menus, so we could sample one of everything. The “betabel y queso” (grilled beets with burrata and chaya pesto) and “chocolate textures” (including a mousse, sponge, and carmelized cacao nibs) stood out as favorites.

I didn’t anticipate becoming such a fervent babymoon advocate , but here I am. And, while a curated babymoon at a luxury resort is absolutely lovely, you don’t necessarily need all of the bells and whistles. What I believe new parents do need and deserve is the time to step away from the day-to-day and indulge in this phase of life, to take your body where you feel happiest—whether that’s in the tropics or in Iceland —and to reconnect with yourself, your partner, and your baby.

The relief I felt, finally floating in the sea—a reminder of myself, and who I am without her—and then gravity returning the weight and power of her back to me as I emerged from the water turned out to be all I needed. I’ve been excited to have a kid for as long as I can remember; now, I'm finally excited to be a mom.

Get to Know Carnival Panorama

There just isn’t enough vacation time to do everything, so we go for the widest variety, make the most of the moments... and above all, try to have the most fun whenever possible. All of you with the heads nodding, hands raised, folks who just stood up and cheered at the office — you’re Carnival Panorama’s people! This ship packs all the best, most delicious fun from her sister ships Carnival Vista ® and Carnival Horizon ® , but still manages to stand out. One example: it’s easy to stand out when you’re literally flying, and Carnival Panorama has the only Sky Zone ™ trampoline park you’ll find at sea. This spot gives a whole new meaning to leaving the land behind, so lose the shoes and gain some air with gravity-defying dodgeball sessions or slam-dunk basketball experiences. That’s not the only way to catch some air, either, because this ship also features SkyRide ® , a pedal-powered suspended bike experience that’ll have you enjoying wide, breezy views of the ocean. Plus there’s a ropes course, mini-golf and WaterWorks ™ waterpark, of course! It’s not all action, though, because relaxation options like Cloud 9 Spa ™ and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat ™ are on the menu. Great dining is too, with choices that range from the refined fare of Bonsai Teppanyaki ™ and Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse to come-as-hungry-as-you-are classics like BlueIguana Cantina ™ , Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse and Seafood Shack ™ . (And at Guy’s, the brews are as fresh as the food, all of which are made on board.) Havana Bar & Pool are there to give you a bit of that “90 miles south” flavor and flair, with matching stateroom options that keep you close to the action all cruise long. There’s traditional Carnival fun too, and these fan-favorites are great news for everybody! Three age-perfect youth programs keep kids busy having a blast with their peers, while Playlist Productions ™ take songs you know and make high-energy crowd-pleasing shows out of them. Dive-In Movies makes a big production out of the big screen over the pool, plus The Punchliner Comedy Club ™ features family-friendly shows… and, uh, late-night shows for after the kids go to bed.

The Best New Hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico: 2024 Hot List

Posted: April 24, 2024 | Last updated: April 24, 2024

It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. Inside Alex Cooper and Matt Kaplan’s Intimate Beachside Wedding in Riviera Maya

By Alexandra Macon

How Alex Cooper and Matthew “Matt” Kaplan—the cofounders and co-CEOs of Trending Media Company, and as of this past weekend, newlyweds—met has been very well documented, as the “Daddy Gang” knows. For the uninitiated, the “Daddy Gang” is how Alex (a.k.a. “Father Cooper”) refers to her faithful following of podcast listeners. Alex is the co-creator and host of the weekly Call Her Daddy comedy and advice podcast on Spotify, and has been referred to as “arguably the most successful woman in podcasting” by Time magazine and “Gen Z’s Barbara Walters” by Rolling Stone —and now, you can call her Mrs. Cooper Kaplan.

It all started in the middle of the pandemic—in July of 2020, to be precise—when Alex’s agent set up a few Zoom meetings for her with film and television companies. “After back-to-back meetings, I got on my last meeting of the day with ACE Productions, Matt’s company,” Alex remembers. “I got on Zoom and immediately started thinking, Wow, this producer is very handsome—but, stay focused Alex. There were about five other people on the Zoom from his company, but I kept just staring at Matt’s video square.”

After the call ended, Alex had a gut feeling it wouldn’t be the last time she saw Matt—and after the television show didn’t work out, the couple decided to roll the dice romantically. “We went on a few dinner dates in L.A. and sat in parking lots, pandemic-style, and there was no doubt in my mind after the first dinner that he would be the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with,” she adds. “I’m extremely picky so this was big for me.”

As they continued their courtship, Alex began to re-think her long-held disinterest in getting married. “I had always been a cynic when it came to marriage,” Alex admits. “[But,] from the beginning of our relationship, I was honest with Matt and told him I might be more interested in the whole ‘life partner’ route. Growing up, I witnessed my parents live the once-in-a-lifetime love—they are still together, 40 years this year. I was convinced I would never find what they had, and so I didn’t expect it and didn’t look for it. Little did I know, I just needed to find my Matt Kaplan.”

It was important to Alex, she explains, that Matt was open to remaining life partners if that was what she wanted—although he made it very clear if he had his way, he would get down on one knee. “I remember waking up one day and realizing that Matt’s unwavering love for me and his commitment to growing with me as an individual and to us as a partnership had completely shifted my opinion of marriage,” Alex says. To that end, Matt took Alex on a date to Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica around December 2022, and there, she told him that she’d changed her mind. “You can do it,” she said. “You can propose. We can get married.”

So, on May 3, 2023, Matt did just that. “I came home from a photoshoot on a Friday—little did I know it was a fake photoshoot Matt set up for me so I would have my hair and makeup done,” she recalls. “It had been a long week. I was excited to get home, get in the jacuzzi, and have some whiskey with my boyfriend. When I pulled up to the house Matt’s car wasn’t at home, so I figured he was still stuck at the office. I walked into our home, guard down, in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, ready to go lay on the couch and watch some Grey’s Anatomy until he got home, but instead walked into the most romantic stunning setup. I was shocked. Adele was playing all throughout my house, candles lit everywhere and there was a laptop that said ‘play me’ sitting on the table.”

Alex pressed play and a video that Matt had made appeared. Wearing the same outfit he had worn three years ago on that first Zoom call, he proceeded to talk about their life and love together but explained that there was one thing missing. “Go find it,” he said. Then, Alex proceeded to follow a scavenger hunt, room by room throughout the house. Each card on the scavenger hunt brought her through a different part of their life together, with each room crafted and styled according to a theme within their romance. The final card prompted her to go down to the courtyard garden, where she turned the corner and saw Matt and their dog, Henry, waiting for her under a canopy of flowers.

“We cried, we kissed, we celebrated, and it was the most magical night of my life,” Alex remembers. Finally, Matt had one more surprise up his sleeve. “I thought he was taking us out for a special dinner for two, and when I walked into the lobby of the restaurant to my absolute surprise he had flown out all my closest friends and family,” Alex says. “We got to spend the remainder of the night celebrating. One thing about Matt Kaplan—he is the most romantic man I have ever met in my life. I’m a very lucky woman.”

After the engagement, the two jumped into planning mode—with the groom leading the way. “The planning process was a dream,” Alex says. “Matt handled almost everything so I was quite stress free. In my defense, as a producer, Matt's specialty is planning and visualizing and bringing things to life, so I knew if I wanted it to go perfectly, leave it to Matt. Of course, I contributed where I could—like what flavor the cake would be—but I give Matt so much credit because he truly took on the heavy lifting, and it was perfect.”

Matt explains that they were keen for it to feel like a vacation for their family and friends, meaning they quickly settled on Mexico as a destination. “We weren’t looking to have a formal wedding,” he says. We wanted it to feel relaxed and authentic to us and the location, so from the decor to the festivities it all was very naturally curated.” The two worked with the event planning company Bash Please to coordinate all of the logistics and decor. “We wanted to choose a destination that was private, romantic, and felt like a vacation for not only us but all of our guests,” Alex says. “It was really important to us to keep the guest list small so we could be present with each other and the people who we love the most and who have helped us become who we are today.”

Alex’s wedding weekend wardrobe—and especially the dress—was unfortunately something Matt couldn’t help with. “At the beginning when we started to discuss wedding planning, I truly had no idea what I wanted to wear,” she says. “There were no vision boards I had made from when I was younger nor did I create one once Matt got down on one knee and I said yes. I had no idea what direction I was going to go, and I was a bit overwhelmed. So I just started trying things on.”

She tried on multiple designer dresses with her stylist Mimi Cuttrell , but nothing felt right. Eventually, she resorted to Pinterest, and after hours of scrolling through inspiration photos, she came across a dress that was in the realm of what she wanted, by Danielle Frankel. “I immediately sent it to Mimi and asked her to get me the dress as I needed to try it on ASAP. I had a feeling the pearl off-white color and the vintage, yet modern elements would be a perfect match for me,” Alex explains. “The minute I tried it on I knew we had found what I was looking for.”

Mimi reached out to Danielle Frankel and from there they began the process of creating a custom gown, while using the designer’s existing original dress as the inspiration, tweaking the V-neckline to a straight line and adjusting the drop waist. At an appointment with Danielle, they tried many different variations of how big the train and skirt could be but kept going back to the simplest, smallest version with no train. In the final fitting, Alex tried on veils and ultimately the short blusher veil just felt right. “The dress truly turned out to be my dream,” the bride says. “I felt so classic and chic in it. I felt confident and sexy while still elegant and timeless. [From there,] the rest of the looks fell into place.”

Another Danielle Frankel showstopper featuring pearls was selected for Thursday night—Alex wanted a dress that worked for the venue’s speakeasy vibe, and this one delivered. And on Friday night, the bride wore a vintage Donna Karan dress. “In one of our fittings, Mimi had this one dress in the midst of a lot of white, and I couldn’t stop staring at,” she remembers. “It was so beautiful on the rack. After all the white try-ons, I grabbed the dress, and the minute I tried it on, Mimi and I were thrilled. We found it.”

The last major look that was chosen was a vintage Alexander McQueen dress for the after-party. “Again, the minute I tried it on I knew,” Alex recalls. “Everyone in the room was silent, and we all just stared at each other in shock. It is one of the most beautiful dresses I have ever worn in my life.” Once they’d wrapped all of the main components of her wedding wardrobe, Alex still wanted to source the option of an after -after-party look, and they found it in one of their last fittings: a vintage Versace corset. “It was breathtaking and sexy, but still lived in the same pearl off-white family as the rest of the looks. We finished all the main looks in about two months, and I remember thinking that there was not one look I liked more than the others, and that was the goal.”

The wedding weekend kicked off on April 4 in Riviera Maya, Mexico. On the morning of the wedding, Alex got ready in a beach view suite with her closest friends, who all wore matching blue Skims robes. For her elegant, pared-back bun, she worked with hair stylist Cherilyn Farris and colorist Jacob Schwartz , while makeup artist Jenna Kristina executed the bride’s minimal beauty look.

After cocktails accompanied by a string quartet, the ceremony began at 5 p.m. sharp. “It was everything we wanted it to be,” Alex says. “It was emotional, heartfelt, and we tailored it to exactly how we always envisioned it.” The couple forewent the typical tradition of bridesmaids and groomsmen, and devised a unique layout for the ceremony. “There were these huge antique wooden doors facing the courtyard, [so] I decided rather than walking by our guests down the aisle, the doors would open and I would walk towards everyone seated as they were all facing me. A runway if you will! It was the perfect moment because as soon as I came out, the only thing I saw was Matt. It was a very dramatic moment revealing my dress but also a very beautiful euphoric moment between the two of us.”

Alex also chose to break tradition by walking down the aisle alone, instead of having her father walk with her. “At the beginning of wedding planning, I really rejected the concept of being walked down by a man to be handed to another man,” Alex says. “Although to clarify I have such an incredible relationship with my father and both of my parents—it wasn’t about that. To me personally, I just never loved that tradition. It’s old and antiquated. My mom also walked herself down the aisle, so in a sense, I guess we are creating our own tradition for the women in our family.” And for Alex and Matt, no special moment would be complete without their beloved dogs, Henry and Bruce. “Some may recognize them as goldendoodles but we see them as our children,” Alex jokes. “They were the ring bearers. They each had one of our rings around their collar and when my brother asked for the rings, they had their own moment entering from the double doors and came running down the aisle. It was perfection.”

Alex’s brother Grant officiated the wedding. “He has been so instrumental throughout my life, and he and Matt have built such a great bond,” Alex says. “My brother did such an incredible job speaking so beautifully about our relationship.” The couple also chose not share their vows with one another until the ceremony itself. “Although my life is pretty public, the true intimate bond and connection Matt and I have we actually keep pretty private,” she says. “So for our families and closest friends to hear us verbalize our feelings towards one another in the most intimate setting felt electric—as you will see in almost every photo, there were no dry eyes in sight. We will never forget that moment.”

Instead of going directly into taking portraits, the bride and groom thought it would be more fun to have all of their guests process out with them, follow them down the aisle, and go directly into cocktail hour. “It was the perfect way to start the evening, have a couple of drinks, and if I’m real, let my guests see my dress up close and get some pictures before we moved on to my next outfit. Priorities!” Because with a location change, came the bride’s next outfit change. Guests were shepherded from cocktail hour down to the beach where there was an open-air tent. “You could hear the waves in the background as we sat and ate dinner,” Alex says. “Since Matt and I both have two left feet, we opted out of a first dance and once again did things our way…we instead had a first shot with all of our guests.”

After speeches were given by family members and friends, everyone made their way to the dance floor. “And I know what you’re thinking: A small intimate wedding sounds like a potential recipe for an extremely awkward dance floor—but that couldn’t have been further from reality,” Alex says. “The vibes were immaculate. There were dance-offs, bottles being passed around, crowd surfing…and once again, I’m not a dancer, but there wasn’t a care in the world from anyone that night. Everyone was on cloud nine.” For the finale, Alex’s dad got on the microphone and announced to everyone that everyone would run into the ocean—dresses, suits, and all. “I was expecting maybe just my close friends to join in, but to my complete shock almost the entire wedding took charge to the ocean,” Alex recalls. “Parents, grandparents, family, and friends.”

Many brides post-wedding talk about their wedding day being a blur, but Alex wouldn’t describe it that way at all. “Matt and I were both so intentional about making the weekend about being present with each other and our friends and family, and that’s exactly what we did,” she says. “There’s no detail or moment I won’t remember—and I will cherish this celebration of our love forever.”

Our dogs are like our children, so of course we had to have Henry and Bruce present throughout the wedding weekend. Just because I’m the bride doesn’t mean I’m off dog-walking duty, so I went for a walk in my Jimmy Choo Amita 45 heels.

Riviera Maya Vacations Vs Mexican Riviera: Choose Your Mexico Getaway Cruise

Discover the magic of traveling in mexico with a visit to its spectacular rivieras..

By Chantae Reden | Published on December 14, 2022

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

The word riviera is typically used to describe stretches of scenic shores, and it's fair to say both the Mexican Riviera and the Riviera Maya have earned their titles. On the western coastline of Mexico, a Mexican Riviera cruise reveals a journey to a wild desert peninsula, dramatic cliffs, romantic cities and epic waves surfers cross oceans for.

Cruise to the eastern coastline for a Mexican vacation along the Riviera Maya, and you'll find ancient Mayan ruins slowly being reclaimed by the jungle, tropical warm waters, thriving coral reefs, stunning cenotes and a vibrant culinary scene. With two wondrous places to consider, here's how to know whether traveling to the Mexican Riviera or the Riviera Maya for a vacation cruise is right for you. Spoiler alert, you can't go wrong with either.

What Is Considered The Mexican Riviera?

T he Mexican Riviera is considered a stretch of coastline when spanning over 4,500 miles along Mexico's west coast, encompassing over 20 towns and cities like laid-back Ensenada, fisherman's haven Cabo San Lucas, lush Puerto Vallarta, foodie-friendly Acapulco and the surfer's paradise of Puerto Escondido. The Sea of Cortez tucked in between Mexico's mainland and the Baja Peninsula is within the Mexican Riviera, too. Because a cruise to the Mexican Riviera covers such a large stretch of coastline, you could be kayaking around a dramatic rock formation one day and strolling the streets of an ancient city the next. For travelers who love grand journeys covering varied landscapes, there are few trips better than a cruise to the Mexican Riviera.

Outdoor Travel Ideas On The Coasts Of Mexico

Whale watching on vacation in Cabo near the Arch. Mexico.

The coastline of the Mexican Riviera ranges from uncharted to world-class when it comes to waves. Puerto Escondido's barreling beach break tempts only the most daring of surfers. For those who want a more mild ride, there are plenty of other waves to explore — like the friendly breakers in front of the surf schools at Ensenada , Todos Santos and Cabo San Lucas. At these spots, surfers of all ages and abilities have a shot at standing on a wave. Some of the best waves I've ever surfed were perched on the points along the Baja Peninsula, many of which are nowhere to be found in surf guides. While the Riviera Maya is not known to entice expert surfers, there are beginner-friendly waves off Puerto Aventuras. Both the Riviera Maya and the Mexican Riviera offer other ocean activities like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Mexico has no shortage of fun things to do, largely thanks to its intriguing history and striking natural landscapes. Ever wondered, "What is Riviera Maya known for?" You'll find the answer as soon as you roam away from the shore. Venture just a few miles inland of the Riviera Maya to admire Mayan structures built by one of mankind's most innovative civilizations. The ancient city of Chichén Itzá is a day trip from Tulum, housing the grand pyramid of El Castillo and nearly 30 other ruins on the grounds. In Tulum, the relics of a stone fortress guard a turquoise sea. In between Tulum and Chichén Itzá, the Mayan city of Cobá reveals a civilization largely built around 600 A.D. Archeologists believe most of the structures of Cobá have yet to be uncovered, so tiptoeing around the jungle ruins is an intrepid experience. In the Si'an Khan Biosphere Reserve on Riviera Maya's southern end, the Muyil Ruins stand as a testament to one of the earliest civilizations in the Yucatán Peninsula, now hidden within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve teeming with wildlife.

The locals in Riviera Maya have many Folktales to Share.

Which West Caribbean Beach Has The Prettiest Water?

Palm trees and boats at Playa del Carmen beach. Riviera Maya.

Along the Mexican Riviera and the Riviera Maya's majestic shorelines are the locations of Mexico's best beaches and the prettiest water. The Riviera Maya is where you'll find those Caribbean blue hues, palm trees and sugar sands we've all been pining for. A prime snorkeling spot is often just a few fin kicks away. Beaches range from lively to untouched, with beach bars, lounges, yoga classes and hidden enclaves all throughout. The water here tends to be warm year-round, and generally calmer than the Pacific Ocean side. For wading and swimming, there are few places better to be.

With the Mexican Riviera's coastline stretching the length of Mexico's western end, there's a beach for every type of traveler. Surfers, sunseekers and beach bums all have a place in the sand. The beaches of Baja California are often surrounded by striking limestone formations, like the wisps of sand tucked in between the cliffs of Land's End at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. Cobalt blues stretch to the horizon all along the coast, occasionally marked by the spray of a humpback whale's exhale. The beaches of Ensenada are wide and spacious, and it's easy to find a spot to yourself. South along the Mexican Riviera, Puerto Vallarta's beaches take on a more tropical feel as waters get warmer and the sands whiter. In Acapulco, it's tempting to lounge the day away under an oversized umbrella — but head to the La Quebrada to witness the heart-thumping performances of cliff divers bounding from the edge of 100-foot-high cliffs into the sea.

Things To Do: Mexican Riviera Vs. Riviera Maya

Fresh Mexican lime soup with chicken. Mexico.

You won't go hungry (or thirsty) on a Mexican Riviera or Riviera Maya vacation, and it's no surprise that both regions are renowned for their seafood. In the Riviera Maya, order a bowl of ceviche for lunch. While no two ceviche recipes are quite alike in the Riviera Maya, you're likely to have some fine-tuned combination of fresh fish marinated in lime juice, tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, onion and a touch of habanero pepper sauce. Despite its seaside proximity, the most famous dish in the Yucatán is cochinita pibil, pork marinated and braised in local spices — traditionally cooked in a stone-lined barbecue pit. Sopa de lima, Yucatan-style lime soup, is made with meat, juice from Yucatán limes, cilantro and chiles.

Because the Mexican Riviera's coastline is longer than the Riviera Maya, the cuisine is more varied. Dive into Ensenada's taco scene, and embrace tortillas stuffed with fish, cabbage, salsa and fresh lime. Order tostadas in Cabo San Lucas, a flat tortilla topped with fresh seafood and salsa. Legend states that the beloved margarita was first concocted in northern Baja California, and while the facts are blurry, it's only right to order one near its fabled place of origin. If cocktails aren't what you fancy, Baja California's Valle de Guadalupe supports tens of wineries, producing nearly 90% of Mexico's wine. You can't go wrong with a glass of chardonnay or sauvignon blanc just before sunset. Further south, it's all about pescado embarazado in Puerto Vallarta , where fish is first smothered in a chile and achiote paste and then set on a grill.

Save room in your suitcase no matter if you're on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera or to Riviera Maya, there are plenty of things worth bringing home. Larger towns and cities like Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán on the Mexican Riviera as well as Playa del Carmen and Tulum in Riviera Maya have boutiques and markets selling Mexico's finest wares, often crafted elsewhere in Mexico. Look for silver jewelry (typically made in Taxco), brightly colored Talavera ceramics, vibrant textiles, musical instruments and intricate Huichol beaded jewelry.

There's fun to be had long after the sun goes down on a Riviera Maya and Mexican Riviera vacation, but you'll need to know where to look. Live music, dancing, superbly mixed cocktails and cold beers are found in just about every major town and city in Mexico, but some parts of the coastline have more of a party reputation than others. Shows, festivals and performances take place in both areas regularly — it pays to check upcoming event schedules ahead of your journey.

Grabbing a drink at Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas is practically a rite of passage for a Mexican Riviera cruise. But if a more mellow evening is what you're after, there are sunset cruises, beer and wine tastings, and laid-back beach bars. Puerto Vallarta hosts bars and nightclubs in the heart of the city and dancing in the town square. The quaint area of Zona Romantica has a blend of mellow pubs and bumping clubs, making it easy to ease in and out of a scene depending on your mood.

The Riviera Maya has always had a pulse come nighttime, but its nightlife scene has really picked up in recent years. The once-sleepy town of Tulum now hosts a party each night of the week, with live music sets as part of the norm. Playa del Carmen is also lively under the stars, with bars offering bottle service to impromptu hotel parties bumping reggaeton. Don't forget to pack a pair of dancing shoes.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.
