Justin Bieber My World 2.0 album cover

So much has been written about Justin Bieber that it’s easy to forget it all started with the music. Teen idols must face the press onslaught that goes hand-in-hand with that challenging territory, but they so rarely have to return to face the music that first got them in that place. But with Bieber having grown so much since the release of his debut album, My World 2.0 , it seems appropriate to look back at the record that broke him as an international star when it was released on March 19, 2010.

Listen to My World 2.0 on Apple Music and Spotify .

Infectious ear candy

Bieber’s backstory is well covered: arguably the biggest YouTube star of them all, the Canadian was spotted on the site in 2007 by Scooter Braun, signed to a major label a year later, and hit the US charts by the summer of 2009. Lifted from the My World EP, his debut single, “One Time,” went Top 20 on both sides of the Atlantic and seemed to suggest that Bieber’s sights were set squarely on the teen market.

Best Fall Out Boy Songs: 20 Pop Punk Classics

That all changed when “Baby” was issued to radio in January 2010. Pairing Bieber with rapper Ludacris , it is an infectious piece of ear candy with a chorus that’s hard to get out of your head. One of Bieber’s greatest skills, in evidence to this day, is his ability to tread the tricky tightrope between out-and-out pop and a grittier, urban sound that keeps things contemporary. Having Usher as his early mentor won’t have hurt his development, but getting Ludacris to appear on this most mainstream of his early hits certainly helped things along.

Justin Bieber - Baby ft. Ludacris

“Somebody To Love” represents another one of Bieber’s signature moves: the floor-filling anthem. Picked as My World 2.0 ’s second single, it has a distinct Eurodance flavor and had been considered by Usher for release before being passed to his protégé. Usher later returned to the track, adding vocals to a remix, but it remains most effective in its original form. Justin would revisit this dance genre time and time again in the years ahead.

A balanced mix

Across just ten tracks on the standard release of My World 2.0 , Justin serves up a balanced mix of material. In an earlier era and accompanied by a piano, the soul-tinged ballad “U Smile” might have been a smash Elton John song (some called it reminiscent of Hall & Oates). Bieber was enthusiastic about the cut, co-written by Jerry Duplessis, who had worked with The Fugees. Calling it one of the best things he had recorded to date, it also offers a nod towards future tracks like “Love Yourself.”

Cuts like “Stuck In The Moment” and “Runaway Love” have a distinct early-soul sound. It’s a leap to call them Motown -influenced, but there’s something of the legendary label’s spirited, melodic genius in the recordings, while Justin’s vocals echo the glorious harmonies of Four Tops and The Supremes . Elsewhere, “Never Let You Go” is a hook-heavy synth ballad that would have worked just as well for any of the era’s reigning pop divas – this was universal hit-making in the broadest sense of the word. And when Justin teams up with Jessica Jarrell for the ballad “Overboard,” the blend of their voices makes them virtually indistinguishable.

In contrast, rapper Sean Kingston delivers an instantly recognizable turn on the exuberant “Eenie Meenie,” which made the upper reaches of most international charts, including a Top 10 placing in the UK, to become arguably My World 2.0 ’s biggest hit after “Baby.” A reggae-party pop anthem, it echoed the sound of acts like Akon, then a regular on radio around the world. With a California-filmed music video just hinting at the party-boy persona that Bieber would adopt in the next few years, “Eenie Meenie” proved a return gift to YouTube, the platform that broke him, scoring millions of views to date.

Sizing up his throne

My World 2.0 ’s Closing cut, “That Should Be Me,” is almost certainly the album’s forgotten highlight. This lush, country-flavored ballad was co-written with production duo The Messengers, and later picked as a duet with Rascal Flatts for use as a remix on Never Say Never: The Remixes in 2011. In this earlier incarnation, it further hints at the array of styles Bieber could master so early in his career: dance, out-and-out pop, country – they were all his for the taking. It’s this versatility that would prove to be at the heart of his dizzying career.

With its best-in-class vocals, canny collaborations, a palette of well-matched styles, and some of the best songwriting of its day, My Way 2.0 shows that the future King Of Pop was already sizing up his throne.

my world 2.0 tour dates

After a bidding war over who was to sign Justin Bieber , back when he was just a no-name YouTube star up in Canada, Usher toppled the likes of Justin Timberlake and opened the doors for the young star. Usher fully intended for Bieber to become another iconic name for his generation, worthy of being added to the same, teen bubblegum Disney-pop roster that dominates the music industry today. With a career moving at the speed of sound, Bieber and the execs over at Def Jam definitely didn’t want the 16-year-old to fall by the wayside after his debut from November of last year. Now not even six-months later, Bieber’s second album release, My World 2.0 , confirms that he is here to stay.

We’ve all seen young talent such as Bieber come on the scene and take over the industry by storm, but you can’t help but find him absolutely adorable. Bieber’s style and music is reminiscent of the R&B singer Mario, when he first came out with his single, “Just a Friend” back in 2002. Mario was this young playboy in the making; self-aware of his ability to swoon the girls at school, yet unabashedly sensitive and often confused by his own feelings and the feelings of his love interests. Bieber is just that, only his boyish round face and a voice that questions whether or not the young man has reached maturity is mixed with surprisingly developed musicianship, allowing him to stand strong in a league that includes Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, and other major pop performers akin.

Parents that are out there worried about what your tweens should be listening to, fear not of Bieber. His lyrics are completely derogatory-free, and sex isn’t a subject known to Bieber here. Working with a team of songwriters that have written songs for artists like JoJo, Christina Millian, and Mario, the content of his lyrics is adolescent-yet-sweet, while also melodramatic and insightful enough to the youth in love. However, complicated and Bieber are two words that shouldn’t go hand-in-hand when discussing his songs. He’s pretty predictable lyrically, most notably on ballads like “Overboard” and “That Should Be Me”. In Bieber’s defense, his rather trite lyrics are excusable. Clichés sound much better than over thought, lofty words when they are coming from a 16-year-old anyway.

Bieber’s voice has this undeniable soul quality to it and there is great control here. During the chorus of ‘That Should Be Me”, Bieber croons up and down the scale effortlessly and so naturally that it makes you believe in what he laments. When the singer isn’t showing you the darker and lonelier side of his music, he’s keeping you warm and charmed with songs like “U Smile”, which features polished, joyful piano work that chimes and carries catchy enough hooks to make for moments of pleasure.

Most of his dance songs call on syncopated synthesizers and voice enhancing techniques like auto tuning, but isn’t that what the kids want these days? Coincidentally, these fancy things actually help Bieber and Sean Kingston in the long run. This technology is a suiting medium for the two, which explains how they crafted the thumping and remix-bound club song, “Eenie Meenie” – a song about a girl who seems like the “love him and leave him” type. It’s bouncy, it’s boisterous, and it’s highly addictive to the body. Speaking of which, here’s a fun dare to leave you with: Listen to this song without moving your body once. Odds are you’ll find this a very difficult task. If that’s the case, Bieber may be more successful than his managers ever intended him to be.

How about that?

On the Charts: Justin Bieber’s “My World 2.0” Jets to Number One

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

The Big News: As expected, Justin Bieber dominated the Billboard 200 in My World 2.0 ‘s debut week in stores, selling 283,000 copies to earn his first Number One debut. My World 2.0 improved on the success of its 2009 predecessor, which arrived at Number Six with 137,000 copies last November. In fact, Bieber was on such a roll, sales of My World are up 50 percent from the previous week as either hardcore fans or misinformed parents bought the two albums together. My World finished the week at Number Five, its highest point in 19 weeks on the charts, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The week’s Number Two album, Monica’s Still Standing , came in 100,000 copies behind Bieber but marked her highest-charting first week since After the Storm hit Number One in 2003. The R&B singer beat out her last album The Makings of Me , which only mustered a Number Eight debut and 93,000 in first week sales in 2006. One more new release managed to break the 100K mark, and it was the ever-successful Now! brand’s 33rd volume at Number Three with 135,000 copies sold. Last week’s Number One, Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now , slipped to Number Four to make room for the three debuts at the top.

Debuts: She and Him’s Volume 2 easily scored the duo’s best debut as Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward entered the charts at Number Six with 47,000 copies, a jump from Volume One ‘s Number 71 peak in 2008. Further down, Scorpions’ final album Sting in the Tail came in at 23, Snoop Dogg’s More Malice debuted at 29 and Goldfrapp’s Head First scored Number 44 in its first week.

Billie eilish would like to reintroduce herself, team trump is ready to lose the supreme court immunity case. they’re celebrating, russian mercenaries hunt the african warlord america couldn’t catch.

Last Week’s Heroes: Even though Need You Now dropped to Number Four, the bestselling album of 2010 so far has only experienced a 16 percent decrease in sales in its ninth week, surpassing the three-quarter mark to double platinum. Speaking of platinum, Sade’s Soldier of Love reached the million plateau in only its seventh week on the charts. Looking forward, Bieber faces some tough competition this week, including his mentor Usher’s new album Raymond v Raymond and Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah Two , so don’t be surprised if the Canadian singer relinquishes his top spot next week.

Record Label

Performance.

  • Disc debuted at 1 with first-week sales of 283,000 units. "Baby" peaked at No. 5.

In six months, Justin Bieber has gone from “that kid whose online singing went viral” to, according to a Billboard cover story, “the most famous 16-year-old in the game.” All seven of the songs on Bieber’s debut EP, My World , charted, and swooning girls hang on his every Tweet. My World 2.0 now promises second-stage ignition for his rocket ride to superstardom. Unlike performers signed by Disney and micromanaged for maximum wholesomeness, however, this tween heartthrob got his contract from hip-hop mogul Usher. Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt commented, “He signed with Usher, and he’s the same age as Usher was when he first became a star. Justin Timberlake, too. So they’re the model for him.”

That’s not a good sign.

Pro-Social Content

With determination and optimism, Bieber tells his girlfriend that they have nowhere to go but “Up.” On “Stuck in the Moment,” he tenderly explains to a young lady that their relationship can’t work under the current circumstances (“I wish we had another time … another place”). Despite an air of desperation about having someone, anyone on his arm, the singer still offers to treat a girl like royalty on “Somebody to Love.” “U Smile” pledges unconditional devotion, and Bieber says he’ll do whatever it takes to halt breakups on “Baby” and “Overboard.” “Never Let You Go” describes a girl’s company as “heaven” and values love over hate. However …

Objectionable Content

That track illustrates Bieber’s superficial, in-the-moment definition of love (“Take my hand, let’s just dance/ … If you didn’t know, this is love”). It also alludes suggestively to the sweetness of a kiss, a subject he reprises on “U Smile” (“Your lips [are] my biggest weakness”). Locking lips is a purely recreational activity on the iTunes bonus track “Kiss and Tell,” which invites a virtual stranger to make out with him—provided she won’t blab to her friends or online.

Sean Kingston dominates ” Eenie Meenie ,” a song about sensual dancing that includes the lyrics “Shawty is a eenie meenie minie moe lover” and “Catch a bad chick by her toe.” A guest interlude by Ludacris on “Baby” reminisces about the rapper’s first love at age 13, a girl who “woke me up daily.” Bieber’s pursuit of a “Runaway Love” isn’t so much objectionable as it is awkward coming from a 16-year-old (“My baby up and hit the road/ … I need to find her ‘fore another man does”).

Summary Advisory

In terms of positioning Bieber for success, this effort feels like the result of intense strategizing … and poor judgment. Whose idea was it to introduce Bieber’s legion of impressionable fans to Ludacris, whose CDs all carry parental warning labels? Writing on gawker.com , Adrian Chen noted, “You might know Ludacris best for the hoes he has in so many different area codes. But a new generation knows Ludacris only as Justin Bieber’s friendly rapping sidekick on the summer hit ‘Baby.'” Nor is Sean Kingston a great role model, for that matter.

And as for someone who just turned 16 pining away on so many songs about finding and losing love, Bieber explained to MTV News, “It’s weird when people say, ‘You’re only 15,’ because I know I’m only 15, but at the same time I think at any age you can experience love. … I don’t know. There’s a difference between love and being in love because you can love someone but not necessarily be in love. So I think I’ve loved girls, but I don’t know—I haven’t been in love before.”

Bottom line: 2.0 picks up where My World left off, offering another round of I-need-you-girl pop R&B that once again strays into mildly sensual territory.

Justin Bieber Performs Intimate Concert at Drake's Toronto Club Over a Year After His Last Show

The Canadian musician treated fans in Toronto to performances of "Baby," "Eenie Meenie" and SZA’s “Snooze" earlier this week

Justin Bieber has made a triumphant return to the stage!

The Grammy-winning musician, 29, treated fans in Toronto this week to an intimate set of hits, remixes and fan-favorite tracks ahead of the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend , when he played at Drake 's History Club for what marked his first live set in over a year.

Bieber performed the short set at the 2,500-capacity venue for the “Drew House x Toronto Maple Leafs” show, per Billboard , where fan-shot footage showed the pop star rocking one of his Drew House hockey jerseys and running through a few hits from his catalog.

The show came days before Bieber's stint at the annual All-Star Game, where he will take on the role of team captain, and over a year after the cancellation of his Justice World Tour.

In September 2022, Bieber called off the remaining dates of the tour, named in promotion of his 2021 album Justice , following his June 2022 diagnosis with Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

At the time, the musician wrote that touring "took a real toll on me." Since then, he's made brief appearances on stage, such as at Don Toliver's Rolling Loud set in March 2023.

But on Thursday, the performer was back in his element in his home country, where he sang his remix of SZA’s “Snooze" and My World 2.0 singles “Eenie Meenie," as well as an updated version of "Baby" stacked with vocal runs.

Later hits he performed included “Peaches," “Hold On,” and "Ghost."

Before wrapping, Bieber even invited his friend and "Stay" collaborator The Kid LAROI on stage, though he did not appear. " It's all good , maybe we'll come back. Love you guys, thank you so much," Bieber said.
