Nairobi National Park Tour

Half day group safari tours, get your safari on - just minutes from town, we offer two daily tours, meet us at the nairobi national park gate.

Adult lion sat up in grassland at Nairobi National Park, Kenya

Same day Nairobi National Park tour bookings? Not a problem!

Our half-day Nairobi National Park tour is a great intro to safari life. Nairobi National Park  is close to the city but it’s the real deal. Incredibly, within sight of Nairobi’s skyline, you can spot lion, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, cheetah, hyena, and plenty more.

Where else in the world can you see downtown skyscrapers frame a grazing herd of giraffes? This is no zoo or theme park. No cages here. This is wildlife, naturally on the savannah as they have roamed for millennia.

Just think, minutes ago you were in a world-class capital city – now you’re on the plains where the East African migration of wildebeest and zebra invades by the thousands on their annual trek.

The park is only 30 minutes( 10KM)  south of Nairobi, but sightings of lions and hyenas are common. Seeing primal nature so close is an almost surreal experience – your friends won’t believe your photos!

And there’s lots more to experience in this unique spot – rhinos, hippos, ostrich, and hundreds of species of colorful birds. For us at  Africa Kenya Safaris , this is our home park, and we take special pride in showing it off.

Help Us Save the Kifaru… the Rhino

Do you speak any Kiswahili? You do now –  kifaru  is the word for rhinoceros. The park supports the largest population of endangered black rhinos in Kenya and has earned the special nickname of  Kifaru Ark.

Your visit helps fund the care and protection of the park’s rhinos. The conservation efforts here have been so successful the rhino population has steadily increased. Now the park has become a source for these endangered creatures for other reserves around the country.

Fast & Flexible

At AKS you write the rules. Travel and explore at your own pace in you own way. We’re fast, flexible, and always ready to respond to your requests. Book in advance or even the day before. We’ll get you out on safari – pronto!

On a Nairobi National Park Safari You Can Walk the Walk

Here’s another unique feature of the park –  walking trails . Most national parks have few if any walking trails… not here. Enjoy your choice of a series of well-marked trails and get closer to the action.

There’s also a walking trail to the hippo pool and watch for crocodiles there as well. While you follow these trails keep your camera ready for sightings of white or black rhino and cheetah, buffalo, and possibly leopard or lion.

Make Some Friends

A group safari is a great way to make friends and meet other safari-loving adventurers. Share photos, swap stories, and maybe even discover other parks together. We can arrange other group tours for you throughout our country-wide choices of great national wildlife reserves.

Poaching – The Ivory Burning Monument

Perhaps the most dramatic symbol in the park is the Ivory Burning Monument . Created as a protest to rampant elephant poaching, several past presidents of Kenya burned hundreds of tons of illegal ivory at this spot – about 5% of all captured ivory in the world.

These dramatic ceremonies were a turning point in Kenya’s awareness of this criminal enterprise and began its dedicated commitment to protecting the country’s elephants.

Nairobi National Park Tour: Different Packages with Prices

Park preview..

Nairobi National Park Tour held Nairobians together when we had an inter-county Lockdown in Kenya. This was the only operational touristic site.

All the glory and merry about being the only National Park within a major city was not in vain.

You only miss the sun when it starts to snow. This was the case with the Nairobi National Park tour.

Thousands of tourists travel many miles overseas just to experience how it feels to do a game drive within a city.

Yet a Kenyan-born has never stepped into this Impeccable, picturesque, and enchanting Park.

Thanks to COVID 19 almost everyone went on a Nairobi National Park Safari. Netizens now appreciate it more than ever.

It came in handy, it was there for us when we needed it the most.

Without much ado, here is everything you need to know about the Nairobi National Park tour.

Why Nairobi National Park Stands Out.

The Back Drop of the Nairobi City from the Park

I have been to this beautiful park countless times and I never get enough of it, no one does. Once you visit that’s it, you`re in for a long haul.

Now I want you to picture this. You’re in an office or hotel near this Park and all you have to do is just have a quick view over that window pane and suddenly you’re like a dog with two tails.

Viewing lions prowling on those Gazelles and to accentuate this, all you need is binoculars, and you’re Certainly sorted.

To spice it up, go for a game drive and take panoramic pictures of lions in their natural habitat with a backdrop of sky-scrapper city buildings.

Where else can you get such an experience? This makes the Nairobi National Park tour a unique tourist destination. Check out 7 attractions you can do from Nairobi.

Why you should do the Nairobi National Park Tour.

Nairobi National Park Safari ( Image Courtesy )

12.) Affordable.

The Nairobi National Park tour is the most affordable safari Package in Kenya.

COVID-19 measures recommend a minimum number of 6 pax per Tour Van or Land cruiser. This doesn’t mean the price has gone higher on the contrary it has gone down.

Nairobi National Park’s fee has always been almost half of the other National Parks’ fees. This is not because it has less to offer but because it is a Kenyan treasure for people all over the world.

In any case, the Nairobi National Park game drives are more engaging than most of the other National parks and reserves in Kenya.

The game drives start at 6:00 Am just like the other normal days and end at noon Six good hours of incredible Game drive. It is encouraged to do a family tour or with friends.

11.) Therapeutic.

The Back Drop of the City ( Image Courtesy)

This Safari will come in handy magically, You are on a business trip in Kenya and you only have a half-day in Nairobi?

Doing a game drive in Nairobi NP is the ideal activity in Nairobi. Isn`t it exhilarating to see that Lion with the black mane roar?

The moment you step in that KWS gate everything changes.

10.) Adrenaline rush

The thought of waking up early morning, the thrill of looking forward to the Big Day. The Game drive at Nairobi National Park Tour will keep you on your toes.

Just like back in the day on the eve of Christmas, that feeling before a big day will send those chills, and this is scientifically proven, to be a good course for your mind.

9.) Save Money

You will save a lot if you take the deals on the table. The Nairobi National Park Tour Packages are the most discounted and sold.

Some Tour operators will even extend the pleasure of receiving or dropping you at the Airport at no extra charge. or Dropping and picking you up at your Nairobi Residence.

The Attractions

Black Rhino the lip Hooked at NNP

8.) Black Rhinoceros.

This is one of the most endangered species in the history of Kenyan wildlife. Rhinoceros is hook-lipped, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The black rhino population has declined by 97.6 from the 1960s, thanks to these assholes called poachers. Typing this name DRAINS ME.

I wish it never existed, wouldn’t the wildlife world be better? In 1993 before some of you were born, it was estimated that only 2300 black rhinos were remaining.

Thanks to digital conservation efforts across Africa. The population has risen to over 5,000 today. You’re lucky to be able to see a black rhino today.

It is a big deal to see a black rhino before it is too late, grab that phone, engage friends, or even do solo though sharing the cost with friends is always cheaper.

7.) The first park to be gazetted in Kenya.

we have many national parks sanctuaries and reserves in Kenya but Nairobi National Park was the first to be gazetted on December 16, 1946.

You will not only be doing a game drive but also going into history to experience the first park in the history of Kenya

6.) Diverse birdlife.

Nairobi National Park has over 500 bird Species. This means every corner you make in the park you will at least spot different species of birds if not rare.

20 Species are seasonal European migrants. This will go without saying that, Nairobi The Capital city of Kenya has the most bird species list in the world.

This park is widely and popularly known as a bird-guiding destination.

5.) The Big Five at Nairobi National Park.

King of Nairobi National Park (Image Official Nairobi City)

Nairobi National Park is home to the big five except the Elephant which can be viewed at David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (Nairobi).

The Big Four, Lion, cheetah, leopard, and buffalo are just some of the animals you can encounter on a half-day trip on the Nairobi National Park Tour.

If you are lucky you will spot antelope species including the oribi, a grassland special. Coke’s hartebeest is quite common and if lucky, a herd of shy eland will come into view. Pairs of little Kirk’s dik-dik can be spotted as the endangered Hartebeest.

4.) Ivory Burning Site Monument.

This is one of the most important landmarks in the annals of conservation: It was here that the second Kenyan president, Daniel Arap Moi, made a dramatic statement to poachers by setting fire to 11 tonnes of seized ivory in 1989.

That event did send a strong message to the POACHERS. These Cold Hearted Ass** are the worst thing that ever happened to wildlife.

So, the burning meant we were strict about poaching and that it should stop immediately. somehow, I must say it kind of worked for a while.

Until 2016 the current president, Uhuru Kenyatta did the same as shown in the video above. He burned another 100 tonnes of Ivory at the same site.

I keep wondering what goes through the minds of these stone-cold-hearted humans. I know it must have hurt them, witnessing the ivory turn to ashes. This memorable site is within the park, precisely at the main Gate.

3.) Walking trails at hippo pools.

Following the Athi River Banks comes Nature trails inside the Nairobi National Park. This is one of the places you can take a walk or hike as there are raised wooden board path that allows you to have a panorama aerial view and the Hippo Pools. It is a showcase of the park, the route is patrolled by the KWS ( Kenya Wildlife Service) frequently just to keep you safe.

2.) The picnic site.

has facilities such as toilets, running water, and a parking area. Hiking, picnics, game viewing, and bird watching with animals, including hippos, crocodiles, monkeys, terrapins, and birds. The location of Hippo Pools Nature Trail is in Nairobi National Park’s southeastern end, near the Athi River.

1.) The Nairobi National Park Safari Walk.

Nairobi Safari Walk

With its raised wooden boardwalk that allows Panoramic Aeriel views of the wildlife, the Safari Walk is a showcase for Kenya’s Parks and Reserves, allowing an overview. You will be able to see wildlife including the rare bongo, white rhino, leopard, lion, cheetah, and many more…

Hotels inside the Nairobi National Park.

You will probably want to stay overnight and enjoy the roar of the lions, the hoot laugh of the hyenas, groans, and grunts of hippos and Leopards.

At the moment we only have one Tented Camp inside the Nairobi National Park.

Nairobi Tented Camp.

Nairobi Tented Camp

This is the only camp in Nairobi National Park to ever be allowed inside this incredible Gem at the moment.

I hope others not be allowed though due to conservation factors. The SGR should be the last construction in that park.

The Camp Only consists of 9 tented Camps which can accommodate two pax per tent. They are instilled with showers and toilets. It is all Self-contained and you can enjoy the luxury of a Safari Camp.

Which Animals are found in Nairobi National Park?

There are almost all sorts of animals in NNP. We have the big 5 Animals except for the Elephant as shown below.

NNP Animals

The Lions of Nairobi National Park.

Lions of Nairobi National Park Kitili and Mpakasi, Image by Sonia Varma

One of the most sought animals in Africa is the King Lion. Amongst the big Five, Lions are the favorite animal of many.

Nairobi NNP couldn`t be left out. There are plenty of lions roaming freely and are easy to spot during the Nairobi Tour.

Just like us, lions have a ruler, a king of a certain territory. Currently, in NNP there are the top three dominant lions as discussed below.

Mpakasi the Lion.

King Mpakasi at Nairobi National Park Image Sonia Varma

He is one of the most famous and photographed lions in Kenya. So, how do you identify Mpakasi from the rest?

He has a tracking collar around his neck. I would suggest they use GPS Chips instead though. He leads the Athi Pride together with his best friend Kitili.

(Athi pride consists of females, Solo, Serena, Zeeva, and Nala plus 10 Plus cubs) but he was recently spotted mating with Isinya a young lioness from the King Fisher pride which is led by Quntai and Leshan.

Sirikoi the Lion

King Sirikoi at Nairobi National Park, Image Sonia Varma

He was the direct competitor of Mpakasi, before he met his death (RIP 2014-2022) he ruled the KF4 pride. He was injured during a hunt and he was unable to walk again properly.

So the KWs moved in swiftly trying to save him by caging him but as fate would have it. He dislocated his jaws trying to free himself from the cage.

Sirikoi was the son of the late Mohawk who was gunned down in 2016 after straying.

(Mohawk is yet to get justice, he didn`t deserve to die that way). The rangers should have tranquilized him instead of shooting him dead.

Kitili the Terminator.

King Kitili at Nairobi National Park, Image by Sonia Varma

He was named after the former KWs Director General Kitili Mbathi. He is brother to Sirikoi but the best friend of Mpakasi.

The two (Mpakasi & Kitili) rule the same territory amicably. How do you identify Kitili? He has one eye, he lost his left eye from a thorn prick or something of the sort but not from a fight as many tend to believe.

You`re most likely to spot him on your Nairobi National Park Tour from a distance since his blind eye is conspicuous from a distance just like the Terminator.

He`s brother to Sirikoi and the Son of the late Mohawk.

Update: Unfortunately we lost Kitili the Lion, he was killed by other unidentified Lions. He was only trying to protect his Athi Pride Kingdom, he died a warrior .

Quntai and Leshan.

Quntai and Leshan at NNP, Image by William Muturi

They are the future kings of NNP, these brothers hang out together most of the time. Quntai and Leshan are taking care of their King Fisher family after their seniors passed on.

They will soon take over the Park in no time. Mpakasi, Kitili & Sirikoi should watch out for these boys.

Frequently asked questions.

Why is it that there are no elephants in nnp.

Despite being the oldest park in Kenya, the park doesn’t have elephants because it is a small park and it doesn`t have enough wood. The elephants would struggle.

Is the Nairobi National Park Tour worth it?

Yes, especially if you`re not visiting other National main parks, and only have a short time in Nairobi. Then the park is worth every dime and second of it.

Anything else you would wish to know or something I should add regarding NNP? Hit me up in the comment section.

Nairobi National Park Guide [Updated for 2022]

Nairobi National Park offers a taste of Kenya’s incredible wildlife and astounding beauty – without even leaving the city.  Spend your morning surrounded by giraffes, rhino’s, cheetahs, and lions and still be home in time for lunch.

Yes, it may not live up to Kenya’s more famous and impressive parks like Maasai Mara and Amboseli. But what other city in the world has this kind of experience on its doorstep?

If you want to escape into nature for a day, Nairobi National Park is the perfect place to go.

Table of Contents

  • Visit Nairobi NP early in the morning for the best wildlife viewing.
  • Nairobi NP has the highest concentrations of wild rhinos in Kenya. You’re guaranteed to see many on your visit.
  • Combine Nairobi NP as a day trip with nearby attractions like David Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary and Nairobi Giraffe Centre.
  • If you don’t want to do a full game drive in the park, check out the Nairobi Safari Walk.

Nairobi National Park Fees

Additional charges.

All entry fees to Nairobi NP and any additional charges will be included in your game drive tour package.

If you visit the park with your own vehicle, you’ll have to pay extra charges. If you stay overnight in that park at Nairobi Tented Camp , you’ l have to pay camping fees per person.

Nairobi National Park Wildlife

The park is home to a huge range of animals, both large and small.

Over 100 mammal species live in the park, including 4 of the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalos. All that’s missing are elephants, but you can see plenty of them at Amboseli and Massai Mara.

You’ll also get up close with giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, baboons, hogs, and so much more.

nairobi park tour

Nairobi NP is a hugely successful rhino sanctuary, and the species has been reintroduced to the park in huge numbers. Visiting the park is your best chance to see one of the most endangered animals on the planet.

For bird watchers, over 400 migratory and endemic bird species live in or visit the park in large numbers.

Best Time to Visit

Nairobi NP is best visited early in the morning.

The local wildlife will be waking up and very active as they look for food and water. Depending on the season, the park can either get really hot or rainy by the early afternoon.

Alternatively, you can come to the park for sunset. If you’re self-driving, this is a great option, as you can find the perfect viewpoint to watch the sun go down behind the hills.

You can visit the park all year round.

Nairobi National Park Tours

Game drives.

Plenty of tour companies in Nairobi run daily game drives in the park, usually in the early morning and late afternoon.

The tour lasts 5 hours in a comfortable 4×4, with stops across the whole park. They’ll pick you up and drop you off at your hotel or apartment, and you’ll get an expert guide as your driver.

You’re guaranteed plenty of close encounters with the park’s wildlife.

Combination Tours

For the complete Nairobi tourist experience, combine a game drive in Nairobi NP with a trip to some of the city’s other popular attractions.

A trip to Nairobi NP perfectly compliments The Giraffe Centre and David Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary.

Self-Drive Options

If you have a 4×4, it’s possible to visit the park without a guide or driver.

However, you’ll need experience driving on the terrain and within close distances of wild animals. Otherwise, you risk scaring the animals away, completely missing them, or getting stuck in the mud for the afternoon.

If you’re visiting the park for the first time, join a tour or hire a private driver and guide. It’s more fun, comfortable, and convenient.

Nairobi Safari Walk

If you’re looking for an even more relaxed wildlife experience, Nairobi NP also has a little known Safari Walk that doesn’t require entering the park, doing a game drive, and paying park entry fees.

Tucked away in the far northwest corner of Nairobi NP, the Safari Walk is a 2.5km raised boardwalk that winds through three distinct ecosystems: wetlands, safari, and forestry.

As you stroll along the boardwalk, you’ll get to see a wide variety of wildlife that populates Nairobi NP and all of Kenya: cheetahs, lions, hippos, monkeys, zebras, rhinos, and much more. Along the way, you’ll learn about Kenya’s diverse ecosystems, with plenty of excellent educational plaques and guides.

If you’re spending the day in Karen and Langata, Nairobi Safari Walk is an excellent stopover on your way out of the city.

Nairobi National Park Hotels

There are no hotels in Nairobi NP itself. However, you can stay at Nairobi Tented Camp , a boutique luxury campsite in the park.

If you want to stay close to the park, there are plenty of great hotels along its border. Even better, many double as excellent airport hotels and are all close to Nairobi’s most popular tourist attractions and restaurants.

Main Gate/North of the Park

Tamarind Tree Hotel – A boutique art hotel with a heated outdoor swimming pool. Rooms are bright and colourful, just like the bar, restaurant, and lounge areas. 10-minute drive to Nairobi NP and Wilson Airport – for flights to the coast.

Emara Hotel Ole Sereni – Right on the border of Nairobi NP, the Ole Sereni offers stunning vistas overlooking the park from your room, the infinity pool, and the restaurant. The hotel itself is a luxurious mix of contemporary and traditional safari lodge architecture.

Eka Hotel – A modern, chic hotel with great outdoor facilities, including an excellent pool. Staff are attentive and can prepare a ‘breakfast box’ if you’re leaving for the park or an early flight in the morning.

The Panari Hotel – Overlooking Nairobi NP and close to the airport. Facilities include an indoor swimming pool and spa, fitness centre and dining.

Hilton Garden Inn Nairobi Airport – One of two Hilton Hotels in Nairobi, Hilton Garden Inn offers the high standards and excellent facilities you expect from the chain. The rooftop infinity pool and bar area is definitely the highlight.

South of the Park

What if you’re not in Nairobi and want to visit the national park but skip the city altogether? You can stay at some delightful, cozy lodges south of the park and enter from there.

Nyati Hill Cottages – Traditional self-catering cottages with Swahili touches and private gardens. The beautifully landscaped gardens look out over Nairobi National Park and include a pool, restaurant, and breakfast area.

Nairobi National Park Giraffe

Frequently Asked Questions About Nairobi National Park

If you’re visiting Kenya for a short holiday, you’re better off visiting one of the country’s bigger parks.  However, do you live in Nairobi? In that case, the National Park is an excellent day out of the city – especially when combined with other tourist attractions like the giraffe centre and elephant sanctuary.

Yes!  Plenty of cities around the world have national parks closeby. But nobody else has one just 20 minutes/7 km from the city centre.

Absolutely! I’m not aware of any attacks or robberies in the park, and the animals pose no threat, so long as you stay in your vehicle and designated picnic areas and walking trails.

Tsavo is the biggest national park in Kenya. Tsavo National Park over 22,000 km sq. and made up of two separate national parks: Tsavo West and Tsavo East.  Of the two, Tsavo West National Park is a much better experience, with a lot more wildlife and better, more varied scenery.

Nairobi National Park is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). For any inquiries about the park, contact KWS.

Welcome to Kenya’s most accessible yet incongruous safari experience. Set on the city’s southern outskirts, Nairobi National Park (at 117 sq km, it’s one of Africa’s smallest) has abundant wildlife which can, in places, be viewed against a backdrop of city skyscrapers and airliners coming in to land – it’s the only national park on earth that borders a capital city. Remarkably, the animals seem utterly unperturbed by it all.

Nairobi National Park has acquired the nickname ‘Kifaru Ark’, a testament to its success as a rhinoceros (kifaru in Kiswahili) sanctuary. The park is home to the world’s densest concentration of black rhinoceros (over 50). But even proximity to Kenya’s largest city couldn’t prevent poachers from killing one of the park’s rhinos in August 2013. It was the first such attack in six years.

Lions and hyenas are also commonly sighted within the park; park rangers at the entrance usually have updates on lion movements. You’ll need a bit of patience and a lot of luck to spot the park’s resident cheetahs and leopards. Other regularly spotted species include gazelle, warthog, zebra, giraffe, ostrich and buffalo.

The park’s wetland areas also sustain approximately 400 bird species, which is more than in the whole of the UK.

Ivory Burning Monument

Not far inside the park’s main Langata Road Gate, the Ivory Burning Monument marks the spot where, in 1989, Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi burnt 12 tons of ivory at a site near the main gate. This dramatic event improved Kenya’s conservation image at a time when East African wildlife was being decimated by relentless poaching.

Getting There & Around

Apart from the main entrance, which lies 7km from the CBD, there are other gates on Magadi Rd and the Athi River Gate; the latter is handy if you’re continuing on to Mombasa, Amboseli or the Tanzanian border. The roads in the park are passable with 2WDs, but travelling in a 4WD is never a bad idea, especially if the rains have been heavy.

Unless you already have your own vehicle, the cheapest way to see the park is on the park shuttle, a big KWS bus that leaves the main gate at 2pm on Sunday for a 2½-hour tour. You need to book in person at the main gate by 1.30pm. There was talk of this service being discontinued so ring ahead to avoid disappointment.

Nairobi National Game Park is a unique ecosystem by being the only protected area in the world close to a capital city. Located just 7kms from Nairobi’s city centre, Nairobi National Park is the perfect place for a half-day or full day excursion or Tour from the Kenyan capital. One of the only places on earth where you can be on safari with skyscrapers as part of your backdrop, it’s an ideal layover escape or add-on to your existing safari.

Nairobi National Park Kenya’s first ever National park is a unique and unspoilt wildlife haven within sight of the city’s skyline. Rhino, buffalo, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, lion and plenty of antelopes and gazelles can be seen roaming in this open plains country with a section of highland forest as well as stretches of broken bush country, deep, rocky valleys and gorges with scrub and long grass.

Ornithologists catch with over 300 bird species including the Secretary bird, crowned cranes, vultures, peckers and many more.

Nairobi National Park is the oldest of all Kenya’s national parks. It is known for its Black Rhino Sanctuary and, despite bordering the city, it is home to lions, leopards and hyenas as well as many other Kenyan animals.

Its closeness to Nairobi also means it is very accessible to Kenyans and tourists alike who want to experience a safari without having to travel and stay overnight elsewhere.

Situated around the Embakasi River, Nairobi National Park has herds of buffalo and a concentrated population of ostriches. It is also a good place to experience the wildebeest migration in the summer months and to see four of the “ Big Five ” African animals.

1 Day Nairobi National Park Tour

Nairobi National park history and overview

Nairobi National Park covers just 117km² (44 square miles), and consists of typical, original Kenyan landscape such as plains, forests, steep gorges and lush vegetation along the banks of the Embakasi River. It has a high-altitude, savannah landscape with acacia trees dotting across the open plains.

The park is located just outside of  Nairobi , the capital city of  Kenya , and its boundary adjoins the city’s industrial area.

The protection of animals such as lions, leopards and rhinos, as well as the black rhino conservation program, so close to a major city sometimes results in conflicts between the local Maasai tribe and the city’s four million inhabitants.

There are further problems as development continues and air pollution from the nearby industrial area increases. It is quite odd to see a giraffe grazing against the distant backdrop of high-rise buildings!

Nairobi National Park  is perhaps best known for its significant  black rhino sanctuary.  This is the best place to see these endangered animals in their native environment. There are no elephants in this national park, but four of the “Big Five” can be seen here (lions, leopards, buffalo and rhinos).

Other wildlife commonly seen in the national park include giraffes, elands, zebras and wildebeest. As well, hippos and crocodiles can often be spotted along the Embakasi River.

Nairobi National Park attracts over 150,000 visitors who come to the park every year to see the native African wildlife. Carry a notebook and a spotter’s guide, as well as plenty of water when you go on safari.
