CruiseNext Ultimate: If a guest already knows where and when they want to travel next, they are able to book their next cruise while onboard their current sailing with the CruiseNext team. These reservations are called CruiseNext Ultimate (CNU). Guests can book a future reservation onboard by using their CNC or CNHC and take advantage of the current promotion(s) and receive a complimentary upgrade* for select categories.   Complimentary upgrade is available for guests booking an Inside, Oceanview, Balcony or Club Balcony Suite stateroom.

  • The upgrade offer is complimentary   within the meta  upgrade at the time of booking – unable to upgrade into a category ending in a number. Complimentary upgrades are  not  applicable for Studios, Suites or The Haven.

CNU Promotions are tied to the pricing category,  not  the upgraded category. If the pricing category is a Sailaway rate category i.e. MX, BX, OX, & IX, then the guest will not be able to take advantage of any other promotions regardless of the upgraded category. CNU upgrade is treated as a promotion. Any change to a CNU upgrade reservation that changes the effective date will drop the upgrade from the reservation. Note:   New reservations made onboard will automatically be transferred to the Travel Partner/Agent on record within 10 business days of their current sailing ending.

  • The Travel Partner/Agent will receive their commission on any CNU reservations so long as they were the original booking agent.
  • Standard dispatch regulations apply if a guest wants to change ownership of their reservation.

** New CNC purchased on the sailing will be applied to the reservation made onboard within  3 days after the guest disembarks.

Cool Cruiser

Looking to hear from anyone who has booked onboard with the new CruiseNext Ultimate program. I have been told two different things and would like to hear what the true benefits are.

We have purchased two certificates at $250 a piece and received $125 back for each. It's like purchasing one and getting one for free. A friend booked a tentative Alaskan cruise. It secures them of the down payment of $250 and guarantees them with a choice of an ultimate package

3,000+ Club

This is copied and pasted from NCL website (link follows). I'm only quoting the CruiseNextUltimate portion

Select Your Ship And Sail Date

CruiseNext Ultimate

Know where you want to go? Place 1, 2, 3, or 4 deposits on specific future cruises*** while onboard and enjoy up to $500 FREE onboard credit to spend. PLUS your choice of one of these four FREE offers on your next cruise:

1 Ultimate Beverage Package 2 Ultimate Dining Package 3 250 Minute Internet Package 4 $75 per port Shorex Credit

And what's more, on select sailings Friends and Family sail free ! Also, as part of our CruiseNext Program, you can book The Haven with a reduced deposit of $500 and all four offers above are included.

Couple of questions that don't seem to be addressed in the terms and conditions

1) are above choices only for those booked Oceanview up to suite level or do they also apply to insides and/or studios ??

2) if there is a current promo going on (like there is right now) do you get your choice of one of the promo offers from current promo as well as choice of CruiseNext promo offer ??

Do you have to buy 2? Or can you only get one if you want?

kjquilts this is one of the questions I have. I called NCL and was told no - just whatever promo was on at the time you book. Another cruiser said that she went to the meeting on board and they said you get to pick UBP or UDP plus one from the current promo. Who's right? It doesn't make sense to me for there to be no benefit whatsoever to booking onboard. Why would anyone bother and why would they pay to have a PCC on every ship?

ilove2crews

What does ultimate mean? Is it unlimited or credit towards dining or beverage package?

This link tells you about it.

You can buy one but you will only get $100 onboard credit back. Two or more you receive $125 on board credit per certificate

The unlimited part means that you pick a vacation that you may want to go on in the future put your $250 on it and pick ONE of the choices they have either UBP, UDP, Wifi or excursion credit. If you decide to change the vacation/ship/date you can do so and still keep your Choice option even if it's not available at the time of the change. If you decide that the vacation/ship/date you originally chose does not work and want to change it, you can do so and the $250 on board credit and your choice will transfer over to that new cruise BUT that is now the last time you can use your $250 on board credit or choice.

Could someone please confirm what NauticalSmile wrote about making a change to your cruise?

If I purchase a cruisenext ultimate certificate and lock in a future cruise date, I can make one change to the date and still be able to get one of the 4 free offers.

ok.. I hope this helps. I bought two future cruise rewards. Whatever the current promotions are NOW, that is what you CAN get. If you don't have a date in mind, she/he will book you on a fake cruise 4 years out. I truly wanted an inside room next March, and that room gets a soda package. I have no plans for my next cruise and did not care if I got a promotion or not, so I did not have her make a fake reservation.

If you don't know when you want to cruise, they could set you up with a Balcony in 4 years and you could pick the promotion you could get today. You can cancel the future cruise reward ONCE and keep the promotion, if you cancel it twice, you are left with a regular cruise reward and just the regular promotions that are happening at the time you book.

I think the idea is...... Next you there might not be the UBP, or the UDP promotion and if you buy the cruise reward now, you can keep it.

In speaking with NCL you can indeed make one change and keep the selected perk. I was also told that the Ultimate at this time also does apply to Insides which is a nice bonus.

I plan on booking 2 Next Ultimate vouchers on our November cruise and booking 2 insides for our Thanksgiving 2016 cruise. I will post update then, although I know it is still 75 days away!

Somebody gave you the wrong info. When I booked Cruise Next Ultimate last week on the Jade, it was Oceanview and higher to get the UBP ... insides would have only gotten the soda package. Unfortunately I forgot to ask about the other perks and inside cabins, so I only know that the UBP isn't available. Not sure about dining/wifi/shore excursions ...

I was not concerned about UBP as much as the 3/4 guests being free. I have a Penthouse Suite booked on Jade for Thanksgiving 2016 and have friends who want to tag along. I also have to add another room for my parents and 2 of our kids.

I am confused. You can only get the promo that is in effect when you sail right? So if they do away with the free UBP in November, then I can't book this on board, correct? So really there is no reason to wait if I already have a future cruise certificate.

Here's a new twist:

My wife and I are placing 3 credits onboard. If two are for us and one for a family member should we mention this during "booking" or transfer it after we get back to the US?

If you already have a fcc, of course you can book under the current promo.

But booking on the ship has nothing to do with the current promo. You buy a fcc and if you already know which ship/date you'll be on next, you can lock that reservation in on board + choose one of the four Cruise Next perks (UBP, UDP, 250 minutes wifi, $75 shorex credit per port) ...

You will not get the online promo, only one of those four perks. Unless they change the Cruise Next Ultimate terms, the UBP will keep being yours if you book Oceanview or higher on the ship.

I booked one future cruise on the Gem a few weeks ago. I have four years to use the certificate, but I could only book a cruise that already exists on their calendar. I have April 23, 2017 booked for now. There are no "fake" cruises to book. You have to pick something currently available. I'll be watching for a good deal to change it to next spring.

I am sorry, I mean a cruise that you may or may not take. It did have to be a real cruise.

Not sure if you can buy it in someone else's name but it is very simple to transfer to someone.

Still a little confused. I buy a cruisenext ultimate certificate. I book a balcony for a "potential" cruise for 2017 on the Jade and take the dining package. In June of 2016 I decide to book the Breakaway- a balcony- and use the certificate. I can make this one time change and keep the dining package- Correct??

At the time I book the Breakaway NCL is still offering the 4 ultimate packages. May I take a package (for example the beverage package) based on this new booking plus the dining package attached to my certificate?

If NCL is offering on board credit rather than these "ultimate packages" would I be eligible to get the credit along with my dining package?

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to let you know my own experience with this promotion. Sailed the Getaway Sept. 12 - 19, 2015. On first day went to Future Cruise desk to book a cruise next for April 2017. First I was told no promotion for oceanview, only balcony or higher. Asked for the AARP rate - told me he can't do it but I could call when I got home and they will adjust price. Asked what the CDN exchange was and he couldn't tell me. I went ahead and booked expecting to clear everything up once home. Called yesterday and they confirmed no promo for oceanview. The price of the cruise went up since I booked and the AARP rate they gave me was more than the rate without it on the 12th. I asked for a supervisor and was told the same thing. Ended up cancelling in frustration. My advice - just buy the certificates and book from home.

The first paragraph is correct. From what i was told 2 weeks ago on Breakaway, no you may not combine the cruise next promo with any current promos ncl may be running at the time with the exception of 3rd 4th passengers free if it is applicable to your sailing. They explained it to me as locking in your perk now because when you go to book next year or next month or next week ncl could be offering different or no promos at all.

I was just on the Dawn, and also looked into both CruiseNext and CruiseNext Ultimate.

My conclusion:

CruiseNext is good, CruiseNext Ultimate is bad.

The details:

CruiseNext is very similar to the old future cruise program on board, where you are basically buying credit toward future NCL cruise fare at a big discount. In the past, you were getting $250 worth of future NCL cruise credit (which can only be spent on booking) for $150.

CruiseNext is even better, as you can do either the same $250 for $150, or get additional benefits if you buy multiples at once. For example, I bought $500 worth of cruise credit for $250. The only restriction is that I can only use $250 at a time, and only one per stateroom. But still, that's a hell of a deal.

CruiseNext is also good because you have 4 years to book, it's FULLY TRANSFERABLE to others, and you CAN use it to pay for NCF/taxes.

So by buying CriuseNext, I am getting a $250 discount on my next cruise where I buy two rooms (or $125 off on my next two 1-room cruises), with very little risk. Why little risk? Because I can always sell these if I decide never to cruise NCL again.

So what about CruiseNext Ultimate?

I have determined it's pointless.

You have to place a deposit on a specific cruise on the spot, and the only "benefit" you get is locking in a promotion. It CANNOT be stacked with further promotions!

The "promotions" you can choose are pretty much the same as NCL's existing promos that are widely available to the public. I'm referring to things like the UDP, UBP, etc. So all you're really doing is locking in a promotion that will probably be offered to you anyway at the time of booking, which means it probably has zero value. Yes, you can always replace your CruiseNext Ultimate promotion if the current one you see is better, but still, the whole thing is pointless.

As already noted, CruiseNext Ultimate is also a huge pain in the butt if you typically book with some kind of discount, such as through CAS or with your AARP membership.

It's just not worth doing.

Stick with CruiseNext.

Norwegian Launches New Future Cruise Program

They say nothing in life is free, but Norwegian Cruise Line’s latest offer is pretty darn close, as they’re essentially looking to give you $150 toward your next cruise.

How The New Deal Works

Norwegian Getaway Aerial 2

For years, Norwegian Cruise Line has been offered a program known as Cruise Next. Essentially, it allowed passengers who were on a current cruise to put a downpayment on their next. As a reward for doing so, purchasers receive money — applied directly to their onboard spending account — which they can enjoy on their current cruise.

The program has proven extremely popular over the years, and while some might question the logic of giving away free money, it’s a worthwhile investment for Norwegian Cruise Line. Why? Because the purchaser of a Cruise Next certificate is essentially locked into a future sailing, given that the purchased certificate can’t be used for anything other than to pay the deposit on another cruise. Obviously, it’s worth a bit of onboard credit to guarantee future expenditure.

READ: Royal Caribbean CEO Gives Roadmap to Sailing Again

The new deal, known as Cruise First, operates in a very similar manner with one very important exception: It can be purchased by would-be cruisers, as opposed to the Cruise Next certificate which can only be bought while on a ship or in the weeks immediately following your sailing. By purchasing a $150 Cruise First certificate, the recipient is automatically credited for $300, applicable to their next cruise. You do not need to know when or where you plan to sail at the time of purchase, and the certificate is good for three years.

Why They’re Willing to Give You Free Money

Like with the Cruise Next offers, this new certificate makes sense in that it both puts money in Norwegian Cruise Line’s accounts during this time when there’s very little coming in, and also guarantees that passengers will be booking a sailing at some point down the line.

If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard about this program, it’s because there’s been surprisingly little promotion. In fact, you won’t find any mention of the Cruise First program on Norwegian’s website. Instead, the offer is only available to those who call Norwegian Cruise Line directly or ask their travel advisor to do so.

Just perusing my cruisedocs and notice that there is Cruise Next Ultimate where you get an additional free offer for selecting ship and sail date while on board( I don’t know why they don’t just call it a booking) Has anyone had an opportunity try this and what is this fuh-ab-u-lus offer?

That doesn’t say what the additional free offer entails, only that one exists....

Nope . That is the basic Cruise Next. This is new and called. Those Next Ultimate, special free offer if you reserve a cruise on board

I may be wrong, but I think this is the offer where if you book onboard then you get a free upgrade of one level on your cabin type. So, if you pay for a BC then you get a BB as an example.

There are some issues with it. It is only an upgrade within the same cabin type, so you don’t upgrade from a balcony to a mini suite for example. Also, if you book a non standard type then this doesn’t apply. For example, we recently booked a M6 onboard and these can’t be upgraded (either from or to).

In effect, it means that if you are booking a standard type of room then you pay for the level below. That means you get a small discount, depending on current pricing. Expect to save about $50

You are correct. You get an in-category upgrade. You pay for a BC, you get bumped to a BB. You pay for an IG, you get bumped to an IF. You CANNOT bump to a better category eg. Inside room to oceanview, oceanview to balcony. Bump is only within the category you booked.

Not much of a bonus, but worth it to some I guess.

phillyguy31

I was actually thinking about buying a Haven next and booking my next trip, but other than reducing your deposit it doesn't really seem worth it.

Anyone know if this can work with a guaranteed room rate but be upgraded therefore get perks?

I don’t know about specifics, but almost certainly not.

I assume that would be similar to my booking an M6. These upgrades only work within the main cabin groups (ie BA, BB, BC). I’d be amazed if the X categories were upgradeable in this way.

Hearthosesteeldrumsplayin

Okay, so I booked onboard with Cruise Next, and I have absolutely no idea what my additional perk was. Didn't think about it until afterwards. Maybe my price was slightly reduced? Anyway, no cabin upgrade, as we booked our dream cabin for my DD's graduation present. Garden Villa on Dawn to Bermuda....can hardly wait!

amc155

We did CN and booked while on board the Sun in March. Since we booked an aft room there was no additional perk so I assume there probably wasn't for you either if you couldn't be upgraded within your booking.

We receive a 1 category upgrade in cabin style book balcony received mini suite.

That is much more generous than I have ever heard of being given before. Are you saying you actually received that upgrade?

francina

I'm planning on booking a Haven Suite. So, these rooms cannot be upgraded.

The specifics of the offer might change depending on ship or month....Just got off the Bliss and the CC I thought said one level upgrade but when she gave specific examples said from lowest level in category to the highest like ID to IA. I think what they might do if you pick an A cabin, rather than give you upgrade they charge you for a lower cabin

Never EVER Book an NCL Norwegian Cruise Until you check ALL These Things!

René

I have returned to booking cruises with my favorite cruise line, Norwegian or NCL. My first one I locked in, as I blogged about here , is the better part of 2 years away. To say I am excited is an understatement as I can not wait to get back on the sea but only when it is safe to do so (i.e. the risk of COVID is over).

But I was not content these past few weeks to book only one cruise. Oh no – I have now booked two! What I have done is book something I have always wanted to do but never have had the time or circumstances to get done, that is, to book two longish cruises back-to-back!

And that brings me to today’s post that is all the things you need to do before you book your cruise with NCL. The considerations are many, but they can save you a ton of cash so let’s dive in.

a blue advertisement with yellow text

The first of the two cruises I booked using something you can only get on a past NCL cruise, that is, a “Cruise Next” credit that is future credit for a sailing (with a bunch of T&C and exceptions) that is basically buying cruise money as half off. Great if you have them but what if you don’t? Do not dispair. Take a look at this hidden gem:

a coupon with a black and white border

NCL has an all but hidden discount called “ Cruise First “. While it also has a bunch of rules and exceptions it also gives you cruise money at half off but the neat thing is you can buy it and then immediately use it booking on a cruise as I have above ( I paid $150 and got $300 credit). You can call and buy one of these with an NCL rep and then choose how you next want to continue with your booking. Like how?

a lounge chairs on a patio

In my previous post I outlined the amazing perk being a Caesars Diamond gives you. Unfortunately for now the chain that normally works is on pause . The normal steps would be to get a Chase IHG card that yields you instant IHG Platinum status that then can yield you Wyndham Diamond that lastly can yield you Caesars Diamond. Until it returns I would consider getting a long term hold card, that is, the Chase IHG card to be ready when it does. And there are more travel cards you must consider. Why? Just take a look:

a screenshot of a cruise ship

Every week I am on the hunt across my numerous Amex cards I hold for any offer that I will use that will yield big discounts on things I am going to buy anyway. By activating the offer with NCL on one of my cards I got another $150 off my NCL deposit on top of the $150 from the Cruise First credit. Saving $300 on a $1500 payment right out of the gates is sweet right! But there are so many more things to consider before you book.

a screenshot of a cruise ship

You may want to use Amex travel to book your cruise. You can still use Cruise Next or Cruise First and even the Caesars discount with this. The way you do that is first call the NCL Caesars Cruise folks and have them put the reservation on hold. Then you call Amex travel and have them transfer the reservation (with all the discounts and credit applied) to Amex travel. Then they finish the booking. In addition to onboard credit they often offer bonus things like extra nights of specialty dining and more (be sure to ask). Is this the best way? Maybe but I like other options. Like what?

I have blogged a number of times that I have done the steps above and then had Chase Ultimate Rewards® folks ( run by Connections Loyalty that was just recently was purchased by Chase Bank ) take over the reservation and apply my UR points to cover the cost of the cruise. There is yet another card tie-in option.

a screenshot of a website

I have extensively used this chain in the past, but to me it has fallen a bit out of favor. The steps are to start at TopcashBack and then click to Expedia to book your cruise. Once it is all done and you are home – and a number of months go by – you can get a sweet chunk of cash back. The downside is you can not do so many of the other steps I love to get the cruise booked. But know it is an option. What else?

a group of people celebrating

NCL, once you have a reservation, allows you to buy onboard credit up to $1000 per sailing. Now if you happen to have more Amex NCL $150 back offers on a number of cards (or other offers like 15,000 Membership Rewards points) when you spend $500 you could load in one of these to your cruise account. Whatever money you do not spend on the cruise (even if you spend none of it) you get back in CASH before you depart the ship.

Are we seeing how many deals stacked upon deals there are if you work at it? Is there anything else?

a cruise ship on a cruise ship

If you have ever sailed with NCL and have a Latitudes number you are eligible for even deeper than normal discounts (that can still be stacked with Caesars and others) as well as other perks like more onboard cash or more free wifi or specialty meals and so on. One of these offers I got yielded $100 credit per day for shore excursions – there were a number of shore excursion options that were less than $50 per person resulting in zero cost!

a credit card with a picture of the ocean

Are we done? Just about. The one thing I warn you to stay away from is this BofA NCL credit card. The new card offer is weak compared to any number of travel cards you can choose from (or even cash back) . And even if you do get it for the new card bonus the earnings levels are so poor that you can do better with almost any other card. Just avoid this one please.

Are there other tiny tips or tricks to save even more? Some cruisers have told me they have been able to buy casino chips with a cash back or travel card and simply deposit the chips back into their account and harvest the bonus from the purchase. Every time I have asked about this a 2-5% fee has been part of the purchase thus all but wiping out any value.

What do you think of all these steps? Have you taken advantage of any or all of these steps in booking your past or future NCL cruise? – René

Good tips. Some standard travel agents could match or beat moat of this while including most of the discounts and doing all the leg work. I would use extreme caution using the old cruise ship casino chip mfg spend trick. Amex and others have added language about this recently and are likely to claw back or shut you done in extreme cases.

' src=

@DaninMCI – Agree on the Amex RATS. They are ready to chew your leg off in a heartbeat! BTW a travel agent can use Cruise Next and Cruise First certs when booking.

Agents can book Cruise Next but they don’t get a commission on those typically. I think part of this is how agents did get some commission on these for original bookings and now are being used to carry over to new bookings. Agents can book those and also add on other promos in some cases. In addition, some agents are willing to sweeten the booking with some agency access perks. There is a current promotion where agents selling Cruise First certs can get a $50 gift card for every one they sell so that helps on the backend as it goes to the agent or they can elect to share some of this with clients I’d guess. I have access to all this due to a partnership with an agent for my tour bookings but I don’t book a lot of stand-alone cruises. I do think that using a good TA is a good way to go and helps even more with Covid due to the manual work and many phone calls involved with rebooking canceled cruises. Agents also have access to block and group space in some cases which can be cheaper than the market-facing promos.

' src=

Rene, We have 2 cruises on NCL booked next fall. One 9 days, the other 18 days. We also got the $150 Amex thing for both our cruises and also got applied 2ea. Cruise Next certificates for each cruise. I tried the Caesar thing but it was a no go there.

For each of our cruises we started at cruisecompete.com. We have gotten very good discounts and I like that the various agencies bid on the cruise.

This, however, is the first time I have read or heard about the First Cruise deposit.

Thanks for the tip.

' src=

Good overall info for cruising..Thank YOU

' src=

You aren’t flying but think cruising is safe? Way too risky for me and I’ve been flying regularly over the past year. COVID will be with us for years to come. iMO, cruising is like a salad bar or a handshake, it’s never coming back.

@Mitch – Fly is NOT safe right now. Period!

As to cruising, if you took the time to read the post, my booked sailing is about 2 years away. If we do not have COVID under control by then I will clearly not be flying to get to the ship (since, like now, flying is not safe) nor get on the ship.

' src=

My latest Amex NCL offer ($125/12500 pts), which I have on 2 cards, states only one offer across all eligible cards.

' src=

You can utilize multiple AmEx offers if you setup your CCs under different logins.

If you put them all under (1) account/login, you will only be able to use a single offer.

DW prefers the single account but then only gets 1 offer while I have multiple logins and offers.

' src=

I know you say to avoid it, but I’m looking at the double class upgrade offer on the NCL BofA card that I could earn enough points for after just the initial bonus and paying for my existing cruise. That would be a significant – thousands of dollars – savings on my next cruise. With no yearly fee, I’m not seeing the down side.

@Randy – This highest ever BofA NCL card offer I have ever seen is $250. What is your offer?

It’s still the 20,000-25,000 points. That does equate to $200-250 if redeemed for OBC or statement credits, but that’s not the best way to use those points. You can cash in 30k for a single meta or 60k for a double meta cabin upgrade on any NCL cruise (ie. inside to balcony). So really they’re worth potentially way more than $250.

@Randy – Really?!?! You may have just really opened my eyes on this one. I will study up. HUGE thanks for this.

How to triple stack deals to get the ultimate savings on your next cruise

Andrea M. Rotondo

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

This is the perfect time of year to think about booking your next cruise. With a few vacation days here and there to enjoy, you can peruse your favorite cruise lines' websites and see what itineraries are ideal for a future vacation.

And while ships aren't sailing right now due to a pause necessitated by the coronavirus crisis, news about several viable vaccines gives us confidence that we'll be back on the deck of a cruise ship once it's safe for passengers and crew.

Many cruise lines have announced their 2021 deployments as well as itineraries for at least the first half of 2022, so you can book something in the future with confidence. You can even book a Carnival cruise for any month of 2022 and even January through April of 2023.

Realistically, most cruise lines likely won't resume sailing until around April 2021 . That accounts for the restart plans they are making and the requirements they are following from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As long as your time horizon is a bit longer, you'll find plenty of cruises to book further out and into 2021, 2022 and 2023.

If you plan to book anything, be sure to think through your plan to net the most savings. Here's TPG's triple stack booking method that ensures you'll snag plenty of savings and additional amenities as well.

How to triple stack cruise savings

Start your triple stack deal by looking for the best cruise line offer. You'll find plenty of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals to consider and don't forget that the entire industry launches a bevy of discounts from January through March during its annual "wave season."

Let's look at a real-world example of how to jump-start your triple stack deal.

Stack No. 1: Book a cruise during Norwegian Cruise Line's Cyber Monday Sale

Cruise sales are awesome because, in addition to a concrete discount on the cruise fare, most deals also package in a few "extras."

Norwegian Cruise Line's Cyber Monday Sale is a fantastic example of what you can expect. It offers 30% off all ships and destinations plus you get five bonuses that are worth $2,900. The "5 Free at Sea" offers include complimentary open bar, specialty dining, excursions ($50 credit per port), onboard Wi-Fi and kids sail free on select sailings. (You often only get to pick two of those five perks when booking with some NCL promotions.)

While only certain sailings get the kids sail free deal, other itineraries cost just $99 each for the third and fourth passenger in a cabin.

ncl cruise next ultimate

Stack No. 2: Book with a travel agent for additional perks

Once you have an idea of the sailing and cruise line deal you want to take advantage of, contact your travel agent. He or she will see if they can do better on the fare (sometimes they can, sometimes they can't) and will let you know about any additional bonuses the agency can provide.

When I called a travel agent about an NCL Caribbean cruise, the agent offered $170 onboard credit for a balcony cabin or higher-category stateroom. Remember, that's on top of the other perks already mentioned.

Other perks might be prepaid gratuities, in-cabin treats or a rebate sent to you after the cruise. Costco Travel, for example, sends a Costco Shop Card as a thank-you for booking a cruise. The dollar value depends on the cruise. A seven-night Seattle round-trip cruise to Alaska on Celebrity Solstice in August 2021 with per person cruise fares starting at $1,034 nets a $140 Costco Shop Card.

Before you book a cruise with a travel agent or online agency, check to see what bonuses are on offer and pick the one that is most valuable to you.

And, remember, there are a lot of benefits to booking with a travel agent .

ncl cruise next ultimate

Stack No. 3: Pay for the cruise with your Amex Platinum card

Finally, tell your travel agent you wish to pay for the cruise with The Platinum Card® from American Express in order to receive Amex's Cruise Privileges benefit . Check in advance to make sure your travel agent participates in this program and point them to this URL if they haven't processed a cruise payment like this before.

By using your Platinum card, you'll receive onboard credit and a second amenity. (Participating cruise lines offer different amenities.) In the case of our Norwegian cruise example, you'd receive:

  • $100 onboard credit for inside and outside cabins, $200 for a balcony, veranda or mini-suite stateroom; $300 for a suite
  • Complimentary dinner for two at Le Bistro Restaurant

If you normally sail the luxury lines, the perks are even better. Expect a $300 onboard credit for all stateroom categories aboard Ama Waterways, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Azamara, Seabourn, Crystal, Silversea, Windstar and Uniworld. If you hold the Centurion card, you'll get an extra $200 in onboard credit when sailing Crystal, Regent, Seabourn and Silversea. We'll take $500 in shipboard credits any day!

Bottom line

You can see how deal-stacking works in your favor. Start with a solid offer from the cruise line and then pair it with additional savings and perks offered by your travel agent. Finally, pay with a credit card that will also provide value. That may mean booking with the Platinum Card from American Express, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® to earn 3x points per dollar on any cruise booking that codes as travel or any card for which you are working on the spending threshold for a bonus.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH) Earnings Expected to Grow: What to Know Ahead of Next Week's Release

Wall Street expects a year-over-year increase in earnings on higher revenues when Norwegian Cruise Line ( NCLH Quick Quote NCLH - Free Report ) reports results for the quarter ended March 2024. While this widely-known consensus outlook is important in gauging the company's earnings picture, a powerful factor that could impact its near-term stock price is how the actual results compare to these estimates.

The stock might move higher if these key numbers top expectations in the upcoming earnings report, which is expected to be released on May 1. On the other hand, if they miss, the stock may move lower.

While management's discussion of business conditions on the earnings call will mostly determine the sustainability of the immediate price change and future earnings expectations, it's worth having a handicapping insight into the odds of a positive EPS surprise.

Zacks Consensus Estimate

This cruise operator is expected to post quarterly earnings of $0.12 per share in its upcoming report, which represents a year-over-year change of +140%.

Revenues are expected to be $2.24 billion, up 22.7% from the year-ago quarter.

Estimate Revisions Trend

The consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has remained unchanged over the last 30 days. This is essentially a reflection of how the covering analysts have collectively reassessed their initial estimates over this period.

Investors should keep in mind that an aggregate change may not always reflect the direction of estimate revisions by each of the covering analysts.

Earnings Whisper

Estimate revisions ahead of a company's earnings release offer clues to the business conditions for the period whose results are coming out. Our proprietary surprise prediction model -- the Zacks Earnings ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction) -- has this insight at its core.

The Zacks Earnings ESP compares the Most Accurate Estimate to the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the quarter; the Most Accurate Estimate is a more recent version of the Zacks Consensus EPS estimate. The idea here is that analysts revising their estimates right before an earnings release have the latest information, which could potentially be more accurate than what they and others contributing to the consensus had predicted earlier.

Thus, a positive or negative Earnings ESP reading theoretically indicates the likely deviation of the actual earnings from the consensus estimate. However, the model's predictive power is significant for positive ESP readings only.

A positive Earnings ESP is a strong predictor of an earnings beat, particularly when combined with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold). Our research shows that stocks with this combination produce a positive surprise nearly 70% of the time , and a solid Zacks Rank actually increases the predictive power of Earnings ESP.

Please note that a negative Earnings ESP reading is not indicative of an earnings miss. Our research shows that it is difficult to predict an earnings beat with any degree of confidence for stocks with negative Earnings ESP readings and/or Zacks Rank of 4 (Sell) or 5 (Strong Sell).

How Have the Numbers Shaped Up for Norwegian Cruise Line?

For Norwegian Cruise Line, the Most Accurate Estimate is lower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate, suggesting that analysts have recently become bearish on the company's earnings prospects. This has resulted in an Earnings ESP of -9.41%.

On the other hand, the stock currently carries a Zacks Rank of #3.

So, this combination makes it difficult to conclusively predict that Norwegian Cruise Line will beat the consensus EPS estimate.

Does Earnings Surprise History Hold Any Clue?

Analysts often consider to what extent a company has been able to match consensus estimates in the past while calculating their estimates for its future earnings. So, it's worth taking a look at the surprise history for gauging its influence on the upcoming number.

For the last reported quarter, it was expected that Norwegian Cruise Line would post a loss of $0.13 per share when it actually produced a loss of $0.18, delivering a surprise of -38.46%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has beaten consensus EPS estimates three times.

Bottom Line

An earnings beat or miss may not be the sole basis for a stock moving higher or lower. Many stocks end up losing ground despite an earnings beat due to other factors that disappoint investors. Similarly, unforeseen catalysts help a number of stocks gain despite an earnings miss.

That said, betting on stocks that are expected to beat earnings expectations does increase the odds of success. This is why it's worth checking a company's Earnings ESP and Zacks Rank ahead of its quarterly release. Make sure to utilize our Earnings ESP Filter to uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before they've reported.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn't appear a compelling earnings-beat candidate. However, investors should pay attention to other factors too for betting on this stock or staying away from it ahead of its earnings release.

Expected Results of an Industry Player

Caesars Entertainment ( CZR Quick Quote CZR - Free Report ) , another stock in the Zacks Leisure and Recreation Services industry, is expected to report earnings per share of $0.02 for the quarter ended March 2024. This estimate points to a year-over-year change of -77.8%. Revenues for the quarter are expected to be $2.83 billion, down 0% from the year-ago quarter.

The consensus EPS estimate for Caesars Entertainment has been revised 3.1% higher over the last 30 days to the current level. However, a lower Most Accurate Estimate has resulted in an Earnings ESP of -955.60%.

When combined with a Zacks Rank of #3 (Hold), this Earnings ESP makes it difficult to conclusively predict that Caesars Entertainment will beat the consensus EPS estimate. Over the last four quarters, the company surpassed consensus EPS estimates three times.
