Nicaragua volcanoes and lakes

Nicaragua is perfect to discover on a motorcycle. The country is authentic, and the people are very friendly and helpful. There is an abundance of many quiet paved- and unpaved roads "off the beaten track" which we will discover on our rental motorbikes.  This country in Central America offers a lot of variety and unforgettable folklore.

The start and end of our trip is the oldest city in Central America, Granada. A colonial trading city (est. 1524) with beautiful cobblestone roads, impressive churches and cathedrals, countless restored colonial buildings and cozy plazas. We'll visit the active volcano Masaya and look into its smoking throat, ride along crystal-clear lakes and volcanic mountain chains and through dusty villages. Nicaraguan folklore plays a large role in Nicaraguan culture. Many songs and dances tell us tales of mysterious and sometimes frightening mythical characters known to all Nicaraguans. Nicaragua's folklore and tale traditions have started at least 25 distinctive myths and legends.

After several days in the somewhat cooler mountain region of Nicaragua, we head south. We meet cowboys, colorful bullock carts, fog- and primeval forests, broad rivers and the beautiful unspoiled beaches on the Pacific coast where sea turtles like to lay their eggs.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL GRANADA

Arrival in the capital of Nicaragua, Managua. You will be picked up at the airport and transferred to the nearby beautiful colonial city of Granada.

DAY 2 GRANADA - LEÓN

We leave Granada, where we will come back at the end of our trip. We ride directly to Masaya, to experience the crater rim of the volcano. Here you'll look right into the mouth of the crater of this year-round active volcano. You can see and smell the vapors and fumes that rise from the volcano. We then continue towards Mateare. We'll ride over a small mountain ridge, on sandy roads and through quiet villages, where we meet fully loaded colorful ox carts and their riders along the way. Once back on tarmac roads, we'll have wonderful views of the Momotombo volcano on Lake Xolotlan. In the village of La Paz Centro we take a shortcut and arrive in the beautiful city of León, the cultural, religious and intellectual heart of Nicaragua.

Our guided motorbike tour allows for a rest day today, but there is a lot to do if you feel up to it. You have the time to take a look at the old colonial city. If you prefer to ride the motorbike today, you can take a tour of the volcanic chains of Leòn, or you can take a side trip to Chichigalpa, home of the world famous rum. The beaches near León are also well worth the effort. A boat tour throught he Isla Juan Venado natural area takes you through mangrove forests with a variety of animals along the beach. Here you'll find important breeding grounds for sea turtles that lay their eggs between July and February. If you want to make a little effort, it is worth climbing up the Cerro Negro volcano. The view from the top of the volcano rim is great, and your reward is waiting for you there -  surf your way back down the volcano on a boogie board!

DAY 4 LEÓN - ESTELLÍ

Today a large part of our route is unpaved and we'll ride along a chain of different volcanoes on remote and sandy paths. We continue north towards La Pancha, where motorized traffic is a rarity. We wade through the river, where people and animals gather to cool off. During lunch in El Sauce we'll enjoy Gallo Pinto, the national dish made from rice and beans. On a breathtaking motorbike route on a good dirt road we reach Estelí, famous for the tobacco cultivation and great cigars. A great place to observe daily Nicaraguan life, and hardly any tourists and if you like street art, you will love the area around the square.

DAY 5 ESTELLÍ - SOMOTO

We follow our route on scenic country roads towards the charming dusty town of San Juan de Limay, known for its stonemasons, who carve soapstone and other types of rock from the mountains in the Cerro Tipiscayan area. In this area, ancient rock carvings were found. We visit the beautiful Somoto Canyon, one of the oldest rock formations in Central America. This is where the longest river in Central America, the Coco (or Wangki),originates.  Somoto Canyon wasn't discovered until 2004 and is one of the latest finds of beauty in  Nicaragua. You can tell by the amount of travelers, which is no more than a handful.

DAY 6 SOMOTO - LA DALIA

Pioneering our way on our motorbikes to the remote, unspoiled mountain region in the north. Here we are away from tourism in landscapes that regular tourist will not see. On the well-paved road we'll travel on the panoramic route to Telpaneca and SanJuan del Rio Coco. We cross the Rio Coco River and pursue our adventure farther south. Our goal today is la Dalia, where we'll spend the night in an Ecolodge.

DAY 7 LA DALIA - MATAGALPA

We leave La Dalia and ride the scenic route to Matagalpa on a tarmac road. On our way there, we can visit a waterfall. We're surrounded by cloudy forests and the average temperature here is comfortable, but it rains regularly, so take fleece and rainwear with you.Our hotel is located in the middle of a pristine, abundant nature reserve El Arenal. If you want, you can go on guided hikes with the friendly owner. He also explains coffee growing and processing.

DAY 8 MATAGALPA

Today we'll take a day tour in the beautiful surroundings, around the Lago Apanas reservoir. On our way there, there's fresh, woodfire-grilled fish from the lake for lunch. We'll have our choice of excursions, e.g. to the impressive Penas Blancas massif, part of the Bosawas Biosphere Reserve. Here you will find one of the highest mountains in Nicaragua (1745 m/5700ft). But of course you can also give your rental motorcycle a rest and hike in the area, or visit the town of Matagalpa with the coffeemuseum.

"Our self-ride trip was very varied and the contact with the country and the local people was always friendly and courteous despite our little knowledge of Spanish. There were plenty of highlights, from the cities of Granada and Leon to the coffee plantations and rainforest, the island of Ometepe and the stay in San Juan del Sur. The hotels were very comfortable and well chosen. The GPS data was very helpful, not to say very crucial for the tour, because without them we would never have found the very well-chosen routes. Also the very personal manual was very helpful. It was a great trip! "

DAY 9 MATAGALPA - JUIGALPA

On our way out of the cloud forests and coffee plantations, the route curves its way along smaller paved and unpaved paths. We'll now get to an area with rodeos and cowboys and visit a colorful local market along the way. Our goal today is to reach the authentic Juigalpa on our motorcycles. This small town is situated on a high plateau with a view over the valley, which is intersected by an idyllic river.

DAY 10 JUIGALPA - SAN JORGE

With the green hills behind us, we now ride into the hot lowlands. We'll travel through open fields on small country roads and cross the Rio Tipitapa by ferry. We continue along Lake Nicaragua to Granada. We ride past the north side of the Mombacho volcano. Since the soil is very fertile here, there is a variety of agricultural abundance in these areas. We spend the night on the port town of San Jorge on Lake Nicaragua, from where you have the best view of the island of Ometepe.

DAY 11 SAN JORGE - OMETEPE

In the early morning we take our motorbikes onto the ferry to Ometepe Island, which was formed by two volcanoes, the Conceptiòn and the Maderas, which are interconnected. Ometepe has a rich pre-colonial history and is one of the most important regions in the world for rock art / petroglyphs. In 2010 the island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

DAY 12 OMETEPE

The beautiful, relaxed island of Ometepe offers opportunities for numerous activities. Depending on the weather, you can rent a kayak and paddle to different islands or the river deltas, or you can choose to cycle, hike, kite surf or ride a horse. But you can also circumnavigate the island by motorbike, on a dirt and adventurous path. Just doing nothing and lounging on the beach is also an option.

DAY 13 OMETEPE - SAN JUAN DEL SUR

We continue our tour south, near the Costa Rican border and ride along a little known dirt road towards the Pacific. We explore the lonely beaches south of San Juan del Sur and pass small, quiet fishing villages where life is still very natural, quaint and simple. There are two important breeding grounds for sea turtles here. We spend the night in the center of the most famous seaside resort on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. In the evening you can enjoy the famous sunset, possibly in combination with fresh seafood or fish dishes and a cold beer.

DAY 14 SAN JUAN DEL SUR

Today we'll take the time to discover other beaches, only accessible on small dirt roads, for example Playa Maderas. These beaches are world famous for their good surfing opportunities, but it is still quiet here. If you want to give your motorbike some rest today, you can surf, sail, dive, fish or enjoy the view of abundant jungle on a tree canopy tour.

DAY 15 SAN JUAN DEL SUR - GRANADA

Our day starts with a ride to the vista point at the giant Christ statue for a last look over the bay of San Juan del Sur. We visit Catarina, one of the Pueblos Blancos with local arts and crafts. Here we have a beautiful view of the volcanic lake Laguna de Apoyo, Granada and even Ometepe. We'll ride along the lake and on small streets until we reach Granada, where we return our motorcycles. Granada was founded in 1524 and is still a jewel of colonial architecture. There are numerous restored colonial buildings here, from town houses to churches and cathedrals. It is nice to immerse yourself in local culture and sit in the Parque Central to observe local life and folks.

DAY 16 DEPARTURE

We will transfer you to the airport. Depending on your home time zone, you arrive home on day 16 or 17.

During this trip, we ride 250 cc (17.7 hp) Genesis motorcycles with a seat height of 90 cm (or equivalent). We have some lower motorcycle available.

During the trip through Nicaragua we're not exposed extreme altitudes heights or extremely deserted areas. The day tours are usually not long, so there is plenty of time and opportunities to stop on the way, take pictures or visit villages.

About les then a third of the route we'll ride on unpaved roads. These routes are not difficult to ride, even without off-road experience. However, in bad weather, these off-road days could be tiring. Off-road experience is therefore recommended. Offroad basic training is very useful as preparation. In doing so, you learn how best to handle the motorcycle off-road. It will surely increase your riding pleasure. The motorbikes are light and handy enduro bikes, perfect for this motorcycle trip.

Nicaragua's climate consists of three tropical climates. The northwest and east have a tropical rainforest climate, the central part and the southwest have a tropical monsoon and tropical savanna climate. The central part of Nicaragua has a rainy season, with the most rainfall during the summer (May to October). The period from November to April is much drier. Temperatures on the coast are around 35 degrees Celsius (95F) year round. In the mountains, it can cool down to 15 degrees (59F), especially in the evening.

A helmet is mandatory, as well as protective clothing with built in protectors, good gloves and boots or sturdy shoes. Because of the heat, it is recommended to wear breathable protective clothing. In the colder parts of the mountains, you can wear extra clothing under your jacket if necessary. Because of the dust, we recommend that you bring good glasses or a helmet with a visor. Furthermore, good sunglasses are practical. We plan our trips outside the rainy season, but there are no guarantees. Since it can rain from time to time, a light rain suit is recommended.

The highlights of the trip were many: Volcano Masaya, Leon with equestrian festival, turtle beach, great roads / paths through mountains, volcanoes, plateaus; Matagalpa, Ometepe, beaches to Costa Rica, Granada with its market. Actually, I didn't want to miss anything. A homogeneous tour group. Very good support. The tour guide was very attentive and comradely. Always helpful and approachable. FAQs on  Nicaragua  Motorcycle Rentals and Tours

No, sorry. Mad or Nomad do not offer any rentals, tours or services. Please contact the companies listed on this page directly.

This page displays motorcycle rental and tour companies from around the world. We do a lot of research into these companies before adding them and speak to the managers and owners. Many of the companies we have also used in the past or have met the owners while travelling.

While we have collected them all together in one place for your ease, we take no responsibility in your business with them. We’re simply showcasing companies in one easy-to-use place and are not involved with your dealings with them. Any business you have with these companies is at your own risk. We will not be held liable or responsible in any way.

The best time to rent a motorcycle or join a tour in Nicaragua is between November and May.

Take a video on your phone of the entire bike, do a walk around and film the condition of the chain, fairings, tyres, any bumps, dents and scratches. By doing so, you can’t get caught out and blamed for something you didn’t do when you return it.

Check the wheel bearings, chain, oil, coolant, brakes, clutch and that the handlebars are straight. Tyres need a decent amount of tread and should be suitable for the terrain you’re riding in. Take it for a short test ride and don’t feel pressured or rushed. Go with your gut and if there’s anything that catches your eye, speak to the owners immediately.

This is down to personal preference, where you’re riding and what’s available. If you’re renting or joining a motorcycle tour in the States and you’re going to be primarily on road, then you may want to opt for a big touring bike. If you’re headed to rural or mountainous countries and are going off-road in Central Asia for example, then go for a mid-weight single-cylinder.

We usually find lighter and cheaper rental bikes are better because they’re less stress, you don’t have to worry about dropping them all the time, are easier to fix and more fun.

For more info on choosing the right motorcycle for your trip, have a look at the below guide and also check out the adventure bikes page too.

  • How to Choose Your Adventure Motorcycle
  • Adventure Motorcycle Guides

We recommend lightweight and comfortable gear suitable for the climate you’re travelling in. If you’re heading to a particularly cold place, then go for Gore-Tex pro laminate.

But, the best all-round option is ventilated, light and comfy adventure bike gear. Take the thermal and waterproof liners out and leave them at home. Take a cheap pair of waterproof throwovers and a compressible down jacket that can be stuffed into a small bag. You can use both items as layering if it’s cold and rainy and they double up when off the bike and will reduce the amount of gear you have to take with you in your luggage.

It’s always better to take your own bike gear over renting or using kit from the rental company. You know your own stuff fits, works and is comfortable – especially your helmet. The last thing you want is to get a few days into your trip and get a headache from a tight lid.

Check out our riding gear article for more info on how to choose the right clothing and the guides section for our recommended kit.

  • How to Choose Your Adventure Riding Gear
  • Adventure Bike Riding Gear Guides

Contact the rental or tour company and ask what luggage the bike comes with. Your bike might come with soft bags, hard boxes, a top box or nothing at all.

You can often leave the gear you don’t want to take with you on the trip at the rental or tour company’s headquarters. So you can travel on a plane with a larger kit bag and just take the bag and gear you need on the bike.

The type of luggage you need depends on the type of trip you’re on, how much off-roading you’re doing and how long you’re going for.

A good option is to go for a waterproof duffle bag and a pair of Rok Straps as this type of luggage setup can be fastened to any bike’s pillion seat and you don’t need racks. And take an additional small and light rucksack for your important gear (camera, passport etc) so you don’t have to worry about it when off the bike.

For more info on choosing your motorcycle luggage, check out our guide page below.

READ MORE: Adventure Bike Luggage Guides

Companies may offer motorcycle insurance as an optional extra, include it in the price or not offer it at all. This again depends on the country you’re riding in.

It’s worth getting insurance if you can and ask what the excess is as you will usually be liable for damage to the bike.

Motorcycle insurance is separate from personal travel insurance. This is incredibly important and you need to be very careful when choosing your personal insurance policy because the fine print often won’t cover you for bikes over 125cc, renting, touring or using a bike as your main mode of transport.

Check out our Admin section as you’ll find detailed guides on personal insurance, paperwork and safety on the road.

Follow on facebook:, chasing trails & waves on a motorcycle journey through nicaragua, where virtually every trail leads to a secluded surf break..

nicaragua motorcycle tour

Each of us has his or her own definition of adventure motorcycling: A full day out in the dirt and a couple of beer-infused storytelling sessions, an entire week in the outdoors tackling difficult BDR tracks, a long ride on the Pan American highway top to bottom… At the end of the day, nobody is right or wrong, and that’s the beauty of adventure motorcycling — everybody is welcome.

If you are into surfing, the good thing about an Adventure Bike is that it will take you beyond the typical crowded surf spot where the parking lot is just a few hundred feet away from the waves (sorry Malibu, we still love you…). If along with looking for good surf you happen to be traveling Latin America 2-up, with a surfboard attached to the side of your motorcycle, chances are high that you will score some crazy uncrowded waves.

Nicaragua motorcycle ride and surf

For those who like the adrenaline rush of an open throttle as much as the feeling of dropping down the face of a 9-foot wave, let us take you on a tour of the less traveled roads and waves of Nicaragua in Central America.

Entering Nicaragua is no easy task. While crossing borders from Mexico to Honduras had been a breeze for us, the political situation of Nicaragua is rather tense. President Ortega and his wife have made sure everything will stay the same for a while by arresting and prosecuting every opponent they can. Moreover, if you say you’re a journalist, the border will be closed to you. Luckily, we are here for waves.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

The first miles in a new country are very informative. By seeing how people look at you and react, you quickly get an idea of the vibe towards motorcycle travelers. People smiling, waving at us, sometimes with eyes and mouths wide open. In terms of landscapes: huge grasslands contrasted by volcanoes in the background, all highlighted by a beautiful sky full of colors. That is Nicaragua’s greeting.

Famous for its strong waves, the country’s Pacific Coast is sought out by surfers all over the world. And with only 350 km (217 mi) of Pacific coastal line, Nicaragua is a small country that you can cross in one day if needed. Another option is to go back and forth between the Pacific Ocean and a few cities inland, staying within 30 miles of the coast. Catch good waves, ride good trails, and learn more about Nicaragua’s culture.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

A couple hours from the border with Honduras, in Northern Nicaragua, you will find “The Boom.” This is probably the most famous surf break in the area with some of the most impressive A-shape waves, where you can get barreled, tubed, or pitted… All words that mean riding inside the hollow of the wave as it pours over you. To find an analogy, it is probably like sliding through a corner on a dirt road at 70 mph. Not that we ride like that… Our style is more “2up and overloaded,” with a surfboard on the side for extra spice. And our 2012 Super Ténéré is not craving for that type of riding either.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

There are many things to be considered when it comes to surfing. If the stars are not aligned for the wave to be peaky and hollow at “The Boom,” you might break your surfboard in half (R.I.P).

After finding a replacement, you can ride south to “El Tránsito”, a small fishing village on the central coast. León is also a possible stop on the way south. Founded in 1524, it is a university city where several social movements have sprung up against the government over the years. Walking in the city’s heart, you can appreciate Spanish colonial architecture and a good amount of activist street art.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

If most of the roads were paved so far, the central coast is rather unpaved. Many trails! Hard packed, topped with a tiny bit of loose gravel, for miles. Add perfectly shaped trees in the background, and a bunch of stray cattle wondering around. Be careful though! As anywhere else in Central America, ADV bikes seem to be a powerful magnet for animals. From small chickens to 1200-pound cows, you will learn to read suicidal behaviors from close calls.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

If the waves are still average and a storm is heading back towards you, retreat inland to Granada, a colonial style city with a touristy vibe. You could even unload your bike and go play in the mud around the Laguna de Apoyo, a volcanic crater filled with crystalline blue water. In the area, don’t forget to visit the Gates of Hell: a stirring and bubbling lava lake at the Masaya Volcano National Park.

From Granada, Nicaragua’s most famous surf spot on the list is Popoyo. Four different surf spots, all within a 15 minute walk, with offshore winds that blow all day 300 days a year. It’s worth noting, offshore winds blow from land to sea, and have the effect of stalling the wave, heightening it, and ultimately delaying the inevitable in ways that make for better rides. If you did not think Nicaragua was good for surfing, this place will make you a believer.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

I turned 32 there, and like a birthday gift from the ocean, the waves were pumping. I caught the best ‘lefts’ of my life — a wave that from the surfer’s point of view crashes to the left. If you ride ‘regular’ stance (left foot forward) like I do, this means you ride these waves facing the shore, wave at your back.

Another place worth visiting is Ometepe Island, in the middle of the Cocibolca Lake. A very narrow bridge, several river crossings, and a ferry cruise will get you there. On this volcanic island, you will be surrounded by jungle and grow accustomed to being woken by howler monkeys.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

Islands in the middle of a lake are fun, but there is no surf. If you need a last fix before exiting Nicaragua, head to Playa Maderas or San Juan del Sur. The waves might not compare to Popoyo, but the partying is definitely ON. San Juan del Sur is known for its “Sunday Funday” parties. A pool crawl where everybody drinks more than they should

nicaragua motorcycle tour

.All in all, Nicaragua is a beautiful and safe country that offers incredible landscapes, trails, and waves. Despite both of us being bilingual in Spanish, interactions with born and raised Nicaraguans did not feel as natural as elsewhere in Central America though. From what we experienced, women and men rarely mixed together in everyday life, and it was difficult when my wife, Mathilde, was not included or addressed during small chats. Still, we enjoyed the smiles along the road, and Nicaragua’s wonderful cuisine.

nicaragua motorcycle tour

While surf is ON all year around, prime season with bigger and more powerful swells happens from March to September, during the wet season. Just be prepared to be caught in serious thunderstorms!

island in the nicaraguan lake

The 7-day tour of the lake will allow you to discover authentic Nicaragua, the land of fire. We will leave from San Jose (Costa Rica) towards the border on the Atlantic side in Los Chiles. We will spend the first night in San Miguelito, near Lake Nicaragua. Then we will take the stunning paved mountain roads to the north. From there, we will follow the road by the Cerro Negro volcano and visit the historic center of Leon to sleep on the edge of the Pacific with our feet in the sand. We will see incredible landscapes on our way, between lakes and volcanoes. We will spend a night in Granada to enjoy its colonial architecture and visit the Masaya volcano, the most active in the country. After a last break at the beach of Guasacate and its natural pools, we will reach the volcanic island of Ometepe by ferry to spend the night there and go around it by motorbike. For our return to Costa Rica, we cross the border of Peñas Blancas on the Pacific side to return to San Jose. This tour is flexible according to your availability and your preferences. Our goal is to guarantee the pleasure of driving with complete peace of mind and to help you discover Panama off the tourist trail. This tour is 75% on-road and 25% off-road.

Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador

Motorcycle trip through nicaragua, honduras and el salvador..

Nicaragua: From the planning stage of the trip, I knew that it would be better to cross fast through Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. Wanting to stay safe and considering the magnitude of my project, not wanting to take unnecessary risks, better to cross the border, very long and bureaucratic procedure, get directly to Chinandenga, where I sleep and follow on directly to El Salvador, crossing Honduras without stopping. This country has drawn my attention for its huge plantations of tobacco and child workers transiting the roads. I met two boys on the road, we talked a little, recorded and followed. After sleeping on the roadside in a safe place following the trip without witnessing dangerous situations, but aware that I was doing the right thing, to preserve the safety of my bike, my project and myself.

Honduras: In Chinandega in Nicaragua, I headed to Guasaule to cross the border, it’s difficult to understand the steps and forms. I met a Belgian driving a KTM 990, got together during the process, which after four hours was finalized and I move on. He goes north and I follow my next route to the Pacific Ocean. I crossed the whole country in just over an hour until the border with El Salvador in El Amatillo. El Salvador : Without a doubt, this was the most difficult border to cross due to the extreme heat, coming and going with endless documents and rows, repeating the bureaucracy and meaningless processes. I entered the country and ran the best I could, until the early evening, when I stopped to rest in San Vicente, a small town before the capital and stayed there. I could not leave the place where I was to dine for security reasons, then one of the guards kindly offered to buy pupusas and soda for my dinner. The next day very early I was already ready to go to Guatemala, via poor roads to the border, here again it was difficult to leave the country. Experience that prepares me for what’s to come in the future in other less developed countries.
