Overall the tour was great. The city tour in Whitehorse felt a bit rushed. I would have loved more options for activities like the dog sledding tour I purchased separately through Arctic Range Adventures. I really appreciated the Aurora Centre set up and the comfort and pickup and drop-off. I loved seeing the lights!

My lifelong dream to come to the Yukon and it was everything I hoped for and more! High five to the Fresh Adventures crew for putting together an epic adventure I won't soon forget. The hikes were tough but absolutely worth it and the views from the top were unreal. I've been on a trip with Fresh Adventures in the Rockies before and was happy to see that they offered a Yukon trip as well. The guides, Carl and Alex were fun to be around and the rest of the group was amazing. Loved all the good times and the laughs in the van. Thanks for a great trip!

This company answered all my questions before the trip very quickly. Thanks to Karin. The Arctic Adventure was incredible for me. As a Canadian - the history, the First Nation communities, the scenery - stepping into the Arctic Ocean, being in Tuktoyaktuk, etc. I must mention our Tour Guide Leo. He did an amazing job of driving The Dempster under sometimes difficult circumstances. I felt very safe during our travels. Thanks to you, Leo.

Working with Tour Radar was easy and helpful. They sent timely information about my trip and helped the tour company connect with me to give more specific details. Ruby Range Adventure was a wonderful tour company, and I would be happy to go on another adventure with them again. Thank you, Tour Radar, for helping me find the perfect getaway!

What people love about Yukon And Northwest Territories Tours

A very friendly and professional team and I would happily use again. I saw the aurora twice and missed the third night it was showing because of an early morning flight. The photos taken by the guides were excellent
Good accommodations Good equipment Very Good guides The Wildlife tour is not a good value.
Every employee we met from pick up @ the airport to drop off after our final trip to the Aurora Center was wonderful - Professional, pleasant, and friendly. Price was right! Hotel was OK. My one important critique was we got absolutely no info on the Aurora Borealis. I expected a video or “lecture” or some explanation about what we were looking for/seeing. (And, so so so very happy we saw them!!!) This was a trip specifically to see the northern lights and we heard nothing about them. I will (and have steady) recommend your tour to others but tell them to study up on the Aurora before they go. Thanks for asking!

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES VACATIONS

Along the Arctic coast of Canada lies the Northwest Territories, rightfully claiming to be one of the most untamed landscapes on earth. This hidden corner of Canada is home to some of the highest waterfalls, the deepest lakes, as well as the famed Northwest Passage. The night skies are alive with plumes of the luminous green and purple aurora, the Northern Lights, that appears for nearly 200 nights of the year. Yellowknife, the capital city of the Northwest Territories is known as the best viewing place for the Northern Lights. The diversity of the Territory is immense, and the region boasts 11 official languages, including Chipewyan, Dene, Inuvialuit, Cree, Inuktitut as well as English and French. The traditions of the indigenous groups and those of the fur traders, miners and bush pilots, make for a unique frontier spirited culture. Wildlife, such as the muskoxen have been grazing these lands since the Ice Age. In winter, travel along the famed Ice Roads that can only be experienced here. Go ice fishing and experience a once-in-a-lifetime dogsled ride across the frozen but spectacularly beautiful landscape. What are you waiting for?

Northwest Territories Experiences, Trips & Tours

Journey into the heart of the spectacular northwest territories.

The Northwest Territories is a wilderness sanctuary where you can experience exhilarating outdoor adventures in a pristine natural setting and connect with the incredible people of the region. It is also one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights.

If the great outdoors is calling you, there is perhaps nowhere as enticing as the Northwest Territories. You can catch prehistoric-sized fish swimming in gargantuan lakes, paddle rushing rivers carving through glacial terrain, and trek pristine national parks bigger than many countries. In contrast to the glaciers and the snow, the Northwest Territories is also home to friendly people and warm hospitality.

See the Northern Lights in the Northwest Territories

Located directly under the Auroral Oval, the Northwest Territories is an amazing place to spot the Northern Lights. In fact, the Aurora Borealis is visible in the night sky here approximately 240 nights of the year! Combined with the spectacular natural setting of the region, the Northern Lights viewing experience in the Northwest Territories is incredible.

With direct flights from many Canadian cities, including Toronto, getting to Yellowknife is quick and easy. While catching the Aurora is often a top reason to visit the Northwest Territories, it is certainly not the only thing to do in this vast region. No matter the season, you’ll discover new joy and wonder throughout your stay.

Location: Yellowknife, the capital city of Canada's Northwest Territories, is a beacon for those in search of the surreal beauty of the Northern Lights. Located just over 400 kilometers (248 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, this northern city experiences some of the most extreme weather conditions, from long, harsh winters to short, hot summers. But it's the winter nights that are the main attraction for many, as they play host to the stunning spectacle of the aurora borealis.

Climate: Due to its northern location, Yellowknife sees high levels of geomagnetic activity, which leads to the creation of the vibrant colors associated with the Northern Lights. The weather conditions in the region are relatively stable during the winter, with little precipitation or wind, and low humidity, which means clear skies that are perfect for aurora viewing.

Late November to early April

These are considered the best months for Northern Lights viewing in the Northwest Territories. During this period, the nights are long and dark, providing the perfect canvas for the vibrant colors of the aurora.

December to February

The heart of winter brings the longest and darkest nights of the year, increasing chances of seeing the Northern Lights. However, the weather can be quite cold, so visitors should be prepared for sub-zero temperatures.

Known as Aurora month, March often sees increased solar activity, leading to more frequent and intense displays of the Northern Lights. Plus, the weather begins to warm up slightly.

Early August to mid October

The fall months also offer fantastic Aurora viewing opportunities. When the nights become dark again after the Midnight Sun of summer, the Northern Lights become visible. Different activities are available in the fall (hiking, for example) than in the winter as it is before the snow arrives.

Factors affecting the visibility of Northern Lights

The visibility of the Northern Lights is largely dependent on weather and climate conditions (2). Here are some important factors:

  Cloud Cover

Clear, cloudless skies are crucial for viewing the Northern Lights. If the sky is overcast, it may be difficult to see the Northern Lights.

Light Pollution

Dark skies are essential for Northern Lights viewing. The darker the environment, the more vivid the lights appear. Therefore, it is often recommended to go outside city limits, away from artificial lighting, for the best views.

Solar Activity

The intensity and frequency of the Northern Lights are influenced by solar activity. Increased solar activity often leads to more spectacular auroral displays.

The recommended duration of stay in Yellowknife for Northern Lights viewing is at least three to four nights . This gives visitors a higher chance of witnessing the spectacle, considering that weather and solar conditions can be unpredictable. It also allows enough time to explore other attractions and activities in and around Yellowknife.

2023 WBPHS Field Report-Northern Alberta, Northeastern British Columbia, and Northwest Territories

view from an airplane of wetlands and a large river across the landscape

Eager to embark on our waterfowl-surveying journey , retired pilot-biologist Fred Roetker, and I waited in line to check out of the hotel in northern Minnesota before heading to the airport to load our aircraft for the trip to the Great White North. That’s when we heard a TV in the background of the hotel lobby and heard the news reporter begin the morning broadcast with alarm: “New evacuation orders in Alberta! Wildfires grow as thousands are displaced.” All our attention turned to the heartbreaking footage showing residents evacuating towns located along our survey route as fires raged in the background. At that moment, we knew we were in for a month of dynamic weather conditions and logistical considerations. A heat dome was impacting much of Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and British Columbia, drying out the landscape and providing favorable conditions for fire ignition. We made it to the airport, loaded the aircraft, conducted system checks, took one more look at the weather (clear but smoky!), and we were wheels up and northbound by noon.

two people standing in front of an airplane

After clearing customs, we weaved our way around smoke and airspace reserved for firefighting operations up to northern Alberta. As we began surveying, we were surprised to find that habitat conditions were fair to good, despite the unseasonably warm temperatures following less than average snowfall in the region. As we progressed northwards into the southern region of the Northwest Territories, we observed quite poor habitat conditions. Speaking with locals of Fort Simpson and Hay River, we learned that the winter was warm and little snow fell relative to average winters. Spring also came quick thanks to the aforementioned heat dome. This led to quick evaporation of water in ephemeral wetlands and some semi-permanent wetlands were noticeably recessional or even dry. That’s not the best news for breeding waterfowl. However, as our survey continued north out of the influence of the heat dome, we began to observe good-to-excellent conditions from around Norman Wells, Northwest Territories, up to the Arctic coast between the Mackenzie River delta and Paulatuk, Northwest Territories. Wetlands in this region can remain ice-locked deep into spring but they had already thawed this year, providing abundant opportunity to nesting waterfowl.

view from an airplane of wetlands and trees across the landscape

We completed our survey on June 5 th , but we were unable to immediately ferry south out of Norman Wells due to a welcomed, large frontal system that brought heavy rain to much of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Once the weather cleared enough for us to head south, we noted the habitat conditions across much of the middle portion of the survey area had improved thanks to the ample rainfall. These recharged wetlands may provide suitable opportunities for late or re-nesting waterfowl.

view from an airplane of wetlands and a large river across the landscape

While this survey season was riddled with operational complexity for Fred and me, we were humbled each day as we spoke with residents who had been displaced from their homes, some for over a month. We continue to admire the resilience, hospitality, and respect of nature that define our friends of the North. We pray for the safety of the firefighters, peace for those impacted, and continued rain to assist with fire suppression.
