orchestra tour de cou

"Beethoven's 'Egmont' overture, the centerpiece, made the most of the orchestra's warm, generous sound and de Cou's sense of phrasing and character."

American conductor Emil de Cou appears regularly with orchestras across the United States and is currently the Music Director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle.  He most recently appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in  August of 2022, conducting the orchestra’s closing performance at Ravinia and this past October conducted the premiere of Michael Giacchino’s Werewolf by Night at The Kennedy Center,  hosted by Mr. Giacchino.

Mr. de Cou has conducted a wide range of performances with the National Symphony Orchestra as associate conductor and as a guest since his debut at Wolf Trap in 2000. He formally joined the National Symphony conducting staff in 2001, and in addition to being Associate Conductor, he served as the conductor of the NSO at the Wolf Trap Festival. His innovative concerts at Wolf Trap have included the first screenings of The Wizard of Oz with the score performed with live orchestra, the first ever live-tweeted program notes (for Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony), and a live real-time podcast for a concert entitled Fantastic Planet.  In 2003 he conducted the premiere of the original version of Debussy’s Printemps at the National Cathedral with the Cathedral Choral Society and the NSO.

Mr. de Cou has appeared as guest conductor with many leading orchestras, including those of Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Saint Louis, Detroit, Montreal, Boston Pops, Minnesota, and San Francisco, where he also served as Principal Pops Conductor. He was hired by Mikhail Baryshnikov as conductor of the American Ballet Theatre and served for eight seasons, conducting performances at the Metropolitan Opera House as well as national and international tours. He made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops Orchestra in 2006.

As musical consultant for NASA, Mr. de Cou conducted several successful collaborations, including Human Spaceflight: The Kennedy Legacy, at the Kennedy Center. In 2006 he led the NSO in a presentation of Holst’s The Planets with narration by Leonard Nimoy and images from NASA. For his ongoing work with NASA, Mr. de Cou was awarded the agency’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal in 2012 by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.  In 2021, he led the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in the Vital Voices of the Planet for the UN COP 26 Climate Summit.

His performance of the ballet Othello (with music Elliot Goldenthal) was aired on PBS’s Great Performances and recorded for the Varèse Sarabande label. His other recordings include Debussy Rediscovered, which includes previously unrecorded works by Debussy, for the Arabesque label, and the first recording of Charles Griffes’s The Karin of Koridwen for Koch Records.

Emil de Cou was born in Los Angeles and studied with Daniel Lewis at the University of Southern California. He was the subject of a documentary on National Public Radio and participated in Leonard Bernstein's master class at the Hollywood Bowl.  He resides in San Francisco and Seattle with his husband, conductor Leif Bjaland.

Emil de Cou recalls how the film ‘Fantasia’ led him to pursue classical music

Long before Emil de Cou became an internationally known maestro, he was a diehard fan of movies and music. Eventually he found a way to combine those passions at the highest level.

He’s due back at Symphony Center on Nov. 24-26 to guide the CSO through Walt Disney’s animated classic “Fantasia,” a film that has profound personal significance.

“I saw ‘Fantasia’ as a teenager when it was re-released in theaters,” he says during a break from his gig as principal conductor and music director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. “I loved music, but I didn’t know what to do with my life. When I left the movie theater, I thought, I want to be a classical musician . And I knew it just like I knew the sky was blue. It just blew my mind.”

He no doubt hopes it will blow many other minds, too, as the CSO plays while the film is projected on a big screen overhead. That’s no easy task, he says. But when the whole thing comes together, as it usually does, it’s well worth the stress.

De Cou spoke about “Fantasia” in Concert (which includes segments from “Fantasia 2000”) and movie music in general:

Do you feel extra pressure conducting film scores because audiences are so familiar with them?

It always feels like a high-wire act. It is very scary, even if I've done it [before]. We did the [live-to-picture] world premiere of “The Wizard of Oz” in 2006 at Wolf Trap with the National Symphony Orchestra. I’ve probably conducted that 10 or 15 times, but it never gets easy because it’s always different. It’s very changeable. Orchestras are different. Acoustics are different. People hear each other differently. So it’s always a bit of a trick.

We just did “The Return of the Jedi” at Wolf Trap, a sold-out show, and at the end of that, I was absolutely exhausted. I felt like I’d conducted the whole “Ring” cycle in a row. It just was a fiery, exhausting thing to do. The music for these films was never meant to be played all in a row. With any soundtrack, they record a minute or two minutes at a time, then splice it together. But to play two-and-a-half or three hours of film music, especially the way [the scores] are written now, you don't get any breaks in between [scenes]. The current trend is for everything to be underscored.

You can’t miss a beat.

Oh, my God, no. And I’m thinking, like, three minutes ahead. Also, studio orchestras are playing for microphones. The Chicago Symphony or the National Symphony are playing for Orchestra Hall or the Kennedy Center. So you’re having to play such a big symphonic sound and be nimble at the same time. And that’s a real trick.

What I hear you saying is that what you do is way harder than what Riccardo Muti does.

I wouldn't dare say that. [Laughs]

What is it about the combination of music and film that captures people’s emotions? You did a “Raiders of the Lost Ark” performance in 2016 to especially thunderous applause.

As so many people have said to John Williams, including members of the National Symphony, he kind of wrote the soundtrack to their childhood. “Raiders,” “Jaws,” “E.T.” — these all conjure up very powerful memories, at least for me, of growing up and being aware of film and the importance of music in film. I always look at [these concerts] as being about the music, because certainly you can go home and watch any movie you want that’s perfectly [synched] up. But when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra plays these scores, it brings them to life. You experience them in a whole different way, because so much of great soundtracks get lost in the dialogue or special effects or explosions. You still experience the film, but it’s like you’re hearing the score in 3-D.

Has there been a mentality shift over the years among orchestras about playing popular music like Williams’?

There's not a musician in the country I have ever run across who does not admire his great, great contribution to orchestral music. When it’s done incredibly well, like John Williams or [Franz] Waxman or [Max] Steiner or Bernard Herrmann, orchestras really treat that music as seriously as Samuel Barber or Tchaikovsky. Because it’s so profound and it’s so rare for us to find somebody who can paint a sound picture that goes along with “North by Northwest” or whatever film you’re doing. But it’s very demanding. And the orchestration, especially in a film like “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” is like playing Prokofiev on Red Bull or something.

Do you think these film concerts attract people to other types of orchestral performances who might otherwise not attend?

I would think so. The hardest part is getting people to go into these concert halls like Orchestra Hall, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall. Because people think, “Oh, I don’t know how to behave. I don’t know how to dress up.” But with a movie show, people just go like they’d go to a movie theater and everyone has a great time. It’s a beautiful space that’s very welcoming. The work is incredibly welcoming. And then I think they might want to come back. I would [also] love it for people who love Bruckner to come and see “Fantasia” or “Jaws.” Because there are also a lot of people who think, “Oh, it’s a pops concert, it’s a movie show,” not knowing how incredibly fun and emotionally moving it can be. So I think it goes both ways.

Have you ever tried your hand at composing a film score?

No, I haven’t. I would like to, though. I think that would be fun. Growing up in L.A., I loved films even before I loved orchestra music. Film was a huge passion. It still is. When I was young, my mom had a bunch of dolls. So for Mother’s Day [one year], I got my dad’s Super 8 camera and made a little movie called “My Mom’s Killer Dolls.” I put music behind it, but it’s stock music. Maybe I’ll get around to doing some original scoring.

I’d watch it.

All right, I'll get to work on that.

Wolf trap foundation for the performing arts reveals wolf trap opera, classical music, and dance performances for the 2024 season.

Upcoming season includes performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, captivating dance presentations, and Kevin Puts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning opera, Silent Night

Vienna, Virginia (January 30, 2024) – Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts announced today programming for Wolf Trap Opera (WTO) , classical, symphony, and dance performances for the 2024 summer season. Tickets for all performances go on sale to the public on Friday, February 16 at 10 AM . Wolf Trap Opera’s summer season includes three full productions as well as additional recitals and intimate performances:

  • Mozart’s Così fan tutte (June 21, 23, 29 + 27) at The Barns at Wolf Trap is the first fully staged opera of the 2024 season. The emotionally complex and quick-fire comedy examines sexual attitudes and the battle between love, reason, and human fallibility. Conducted by Christine Brandes and directed by Dan Rigazzi.
  • The endearing tale of Puccini’s La bohème (July 19) takes the Filene Center stage with the National Symphony Orchestra , conducted by Grant Gershon and directed by Katherine M. Carter . Soaring arias and glorious melodies collide with harsh realities in Puccini’s depiction of Parisian bohemians.
  • Kevin Puts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Silent Night (Aug. 9, 11, 15 + 17) is based on the 2005 film Joyeux Noël and tells the story of a surprising Christmas truce during World War I. Conducted by Geoffrey McDonald and directed by Ryan and Tonya McKinny .
  • An intimate recital with Grammy-nominated mezzo-soprano, Jamie Barton (July 14) , the 2024 Filene Artist in Residence .

“Wolf Trap Opera is committed to an artist-centric philosophy which empowers our programming team to curate a season that showcases the exceptional talents that define the next generation of opera artists, all while ensuring an unforgettable experience for performers and patrons alike," said Lee Anne Myslewski, Vice President of Opera and Classical Programming . Other WTO performances this summer include the UNTRAPPED series; Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins (June 1) , held at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in a collaborative performance with musicians from the National Orchestral Institute + Festival; Steven Blier and Friends (June 2) a Latin-flavored program featuring a quartet of Filene Artists to accompany the highly regarded musician; the Salon Series (June 23, 28, + July 1) featuring intimate performances in the bar lounge at The Barns and Aria Jukebox (July 7) , where the audience selects the songs. Learn more about the operas and hear about the curation of the 2024 season here . Wolf Trap Opera is a summer residency program that offers emerging artists performance experience and career development. A national audition tour takes place each year as the best classical vocalists in the country vie for a place in the highly coveted program. Wolf Trap Opera productions play to the strength of the summer residents and allow audiences to experience unique and powerful moments at The Barns and the Filene Center. Alumni of this prestigious program have gone on to perform in every major opera house in the US, Europe, and more. Additional summer 2024 highlights include:

  • A celebration of the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (July 12) with the National Symphony Orchestra , led by conductor Ruth Reinhardt in a program featuring Wolf Trap Opera artists and award-winning violinist Njioma Grevious performing Samuel Taylor-Coleridge’s Violin Concerto.
  • Pilobolus (July 10) a self-professed rebellious dance company, tests the limits of human physicality with sculptural forms that highlight the beauty of connected bodies. re:CREATION dives into a fantastically expansive dreamscape of rare gems and beloved Pilobolus classics featuring a harmonious blend of ethereal imagery, delightful humor, and powerful depth.
  • The National Symphony Orchestra brings life to silver screen classics with showings of Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert (July 13) and Ghostbusters in Concert (July 26) , both led by conductor Emil de Cou .
  • A brilliant evening with The Washington Ballet (Sep. 5) features a mixed repertoire of three diverse works, including George Balanchine's timeless Stravinsky Violin Concerto; a world premiere by Jennifer Archibald; and the graceful Murmuration , choreographed by The Washington Ballet’s new Artistic Director Edwaard Liang . This is Wolf Trap’s 2024 Kay Shouse Great Performance.

We enjoyed a comfortable flight itinerary, nice hotels, good meals, wonderful sightseeing, and most importantly, great concerts. Our venues included three stunning contemporary halls, an elegant baroque room, a delightful castle courtyard and a beautiful spa town. A Smetana festival performance and two shared concerts with German music schools were highlights that our musicians loved. We are all ready to do it again. The Classical Movements staff was awesome!”

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra - Tour de France

Tour de France

Anja Bihlmaier leads the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in this symphonic Tour De France, arriving at a musical work like none other. The landscape of French music changed permanently in 1827, when Hector Berlioz fell head-over-heels in love with an Irish actress and set out to prove his love for her in music. Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique didn't just regale its listeners with all the torture, urgency and heroism of his love for the actress, it set a new course for music in France, urging other composers to invest their works with passion, humour, spirit and pride. All that was felt by the French composers who followed, among them the child prodigy Saint-Saëns who filled his Piano Concerto No. 2 with everything from Bach to Offenbach - not forgetting its wild 'tarantella' finale. Winner of the Clara Haskil Competition, Mao Fujita, plays Saint-Saëns's most popular concerto here after Louise Farrenc's vivacious Overture No. 2, a work partly inspired by Berlioz's impassioned symphony. Understanding Princess Medallion and MedallionClass App

' src=

The Princess Medallion (app and actual device) was one of the reasons we sailed on Majestic Princess. We wanted to see what this piece of technology was all about.

We were incredibly confused about it before our sailing. We understood its existence – the circular physical component and the phone app – but a lot of it was a mystery to us. Did we need to also carry around a credit card? Did we need a separate room key? What was so touchless about it?

After sailing with Princess we understood exactly what it is and how it functions. From accessing your cabin to paying for things onboard and off with your Princess Medallion, to how to accessorize it with custom lanyards and more, we're here to help you understand it too.

Disclosure: There are affiliate links in this post, which means we may earn a small commission if you click the link and proceed with a purchase,  at no cost to you . Understanding Princess Cruises Medallion & MedallionClass app, with a picture of the medallion on a watch band behind it.

What is the Princess Medallion and MedallionClass?

A Princess Medallion and its MedallionClass™️ is the conjunction of two things that work in tandem: a little device that's approximately the diameter of a quarter and whose thickness is a quarter-of-an-inch.

Wearable Device that Makes things Touchless On Board

It's a wearable device that you can carry around in your pocket on its lanyard (which it comes on) or around your neck. You can also buy accessories for it, but we'll tell you more about that later.

Your Princess Medallion becomes your key and card for the world of Princess. You unlock your door with it in lieu of a key (actually, your door just unlocks when your Medallion is in its range, which is pretty cool). A waiter can charge drinks to your account via your Medallion after you order at the bar.

There are also various screens throughout the ship where you can touch your Medallion device, and it adds a touch of customization to your experience, like your name in the top corner.

In some instances and in some ports, you can actually pay for items on land with your Princess Medallion.

Image of a small screen and door number on Majestic Princess cruise ship showing how Princess Medallion works.

Princess MedallionClass Makes Boarding Easy

Whether you're boarding the ship for the first time at your port of embarkation or you're boarding a ship during a day in port for the second time in a day, the Medallion makes it easy to tap in and out of the ship.

It's just like you would tap in and out of the computer system with security on any ship, whether a river or ocean cruise , but instead of a flat key, it's a disc-shaped medallion.

Do you have to buy into Princess MedallionClass?

No, you’re automatically a part of it when you sign up for your Princess cruise . It doesn't cost extra – it's simply a part of cruising with Princess now.

You can access your OceanMedallion app on land from home. When you do so, it simply says “Off Ship” at the top of the app. Naturally, when you're on the ship, you'll have access to things that you don't on land.

All Princess ships are now MedallionClass enabled.

The actual medallion reminds us of the MagicBand system at Walt Disney World. But it’s even cooler because in some instances, like when you near a couple of feet of your stateroom, the door senses you’re there and unlocks your door. (This is only if your Medallion is on you and the door senses you're nearby. Don’t worry about someone else that doesn’t belong in your cabin having access because your Medallion only unlocks your cabin door!)

What happens if you lose your Medallion?

One of the things that we thought was pretty cool was that your name was imprinted on the Medallion. But what happens if you lose it?

The good news is that no one can steal your identity because your credit card isn't linked to your actual device. It's a portal of sorts that links to a guest number, which is then linked to a number of places your data is stored. That's a great layer of security. A crew member will simply disable your lost one.

There is also a photo of each guest attached to their Medallion account. You can upload your own photo to the app before you sail, but they make sure it's your face, and you are easily recognizable with the photo and what you really look like when you first check into the cruise in the port of embarkation.

When a server comes up to you at the pool to ask if you want a drink, for example, they have a list of nearby guests you can potentially be from it pinging nearby Medallions. They look for exactly who you are with the photo list that comes up on their tablet. This worked, every time.

We recommend keeping your Medallion on a lanyard to have it “tied” to you at all times.

However, if you lose yours you can go to Guest Services for them to print you a new one. (Surprisingly, they're able to personalize it onboard too.)

Princess Medallion devices with a white lanyard wrapped around them against a photo of a cruise ship.

Princess Medallion App

Download the Princess Medallion app from your home before you leave for vacation. You'll want to set it up before your trip if you've never logged in and created an account. Search “MedallionClass” in the App Store for your iPhone or on Google Play for your Android.

Truth be told, the app was great before the cruise. But onboard, it doesn’t always work. You can rely on your actual Medallion (the physical device) to work. That was never an issue. But the app was definitely finicky and not working at 100%.

A lot of guests were expressing frustrations with the app not working whenever we walked by the Medallion desk on the ship. That meant that they weren’t able to see what was going on around the ship on their phones or access their dinner reservations, for example.

If the app isn’t working you can see dining reservations on the public portal screens that are located on the ship. If you don't want to “publicly” look it up for whatever reason, you can also call the ship's Dining number on your phone from your stateroom.

There was also a printed version of the daily activities in our cabin each day that was helpful when the app wasn't working.

Texting in the Medallion/Princess App

Texting to other passengers (or “shipmates”) while onboard was free in the app.

To add friends and family to your MedallionClass app, simply go into “Your Shipmates” and hit “Add.”

Additional Wifi on Princess Ships: MedallionNet

While texting shipmates was free, if you wanted to add wifi on your other devices (like a laptop or tablet) you had to add a Wi-Fi Package that you paid for.

For example, when we sailed a Wi-Fi package for four devices for our 7-day cruise was $139. We used this for a phone each and for Dan's computer and my iPad.

Adding wifi to your device was simple after the initial package was purchased.

You simply went on airplane mode (data off, wifi on). Then you opened an internet browser on the device and entered the date of birth of the person who bought the package or the primary person on the reservation when prompted. Voila!

Buying Things with MedallionPay

When you purchase something using the medallion, your photo comes up as an extra layer of security. This was very convenient when we were at the pool or a club at night and wanted to buy drinks.

Princess MedallionPay also works in select ports of call in several Princess destinations, including Alaska, the Caribbean, and Mexico. We didn't get to use this feature because we were on a California Coast itinerary but we do know it's an option in these three locations.

Other Great Features of the MedallionClass ™️ App

We loved that you could see a map of the ship as you were walking around. The ship's big enough not to know your way around the first few days onboard. In particular, it was great for finding restrooms!

It was also fun to look up the ship's information to find where we were in the sea, like where we were going and the speed or knots we were traveling.

Is a Princess Medallion Waterproof?

Yes, it is! This was wonderful for when we went in the pool because Dan would just put his Medallion in the zippered part of his swimsuit and we'd be good to go. We didn't have to worry about leaving anything unattended poolside (even though it would have been fine) and we could swim freely!

And get into our room after, order drinks, etc.

Princess Medallion Colors: What do the Different Colors Mean?

The different colors of the Princess Medallion indicate one of two things: the number of cruises the guest has sailed with Princess, or how many days at sea they've spent with Princess.

A cruise that is 30 days could get someone to a higher loyalty status faster than someone who sails on two cruises that are seven days each.

The Princess Medallion colors are as follows:

  • Blue: First-time cruiser
  • Gold: Second-time cruiser
  • Ruby (red): After completing 3 cruises or 30 cruise days
  • Platinum (silver): After completing 5 cruises or 50 cruise days
  • Elite (black): After completing 15 cruises or 150 cruise days

Customizing your Princess Medallion

There were ways to customize this fun piece of technology before your sailed and after. If you customize it at all is up to you, including when.

Before Your Cruise Through OceanMedallion App

You can order a special Medallion before you leave for your cruise. To do so, you need about two weeks for them to create and ship your customized medallion to you. Otherwise, you simply pick it up at your port of embarkation when you check in.

You can customize it within the app and choose from things like sports team emblems, dog breeds, or gemstones for your birth month. (It's a graphic rendering of the gemstone, not the actual gemstone). These are custom “stickers” that are applied to the medallion for a little extra touch of fun.

Princess MedallionClass app and device customization for sports team with Princess Cruises.

They're $5 and worth the upgrade if you are into customizing things in your life. If you customize your Medallion in the app, but you haven't committed to it and haven't checked out with the item in your “cart” before the cruise, they simply give you the basic Medallion.

Before Your Cruise: Accessorizing a Medallion on Your Own

Preparing for how you'll carry around your Princess Medallion will ensure you're ready to go as soon as you reach your port of embarkation . We have a few great suggestions for how to accessorize before you cruise.

We saw a lot of people with cute rhinestones or patterned lanyards they bought on their own before their cruise. We'd probably do the same next time! Here are some really cute lanyards on Amazon and others on Etsy .

Additionally, there are creative accessories for the Princess Medallions that allow you to wear them on your wrist, whether a dedicated silicone band or an attachment for an Apple watch.

The perfect solution if you would rather carry your Princess Medallion in your pocket and don't want it to be loose.

Princess Medallion Accessories Available on the Ships

When you're on board, there's a Medallion help desk area. There, you'll find additional accessories to purchase for your Princess Medallion.

The options include:

  • Bracelet in gold: $54
  • Lanyard strap: $9 (this is a different strap than what comes with it – it’s blue and thicker than the thin white one you automatically get)
  • Ocean Medallion Clip (clips onto a shirt or your jeans): $8
  • Sustainable clip made from 100% ocean-recycled plastic: $15
  • Ocean Medallion Pendant – silver or gold: $44
  • Ocean Medallion Sports band (purple, black, pink, or blue): $12
  • *Ocean Medallion Sustainable band: $19 (says “Special Edition” under it)
  • Ocean Medallion notebook: $15 with optional $3 insert cards. The card options included things like countries (Canada, Mexico, Germany), or celebrations, like an anniversary or “Happy Birthday” or “Happy Retirement”

*The sustainable bands were interesting. They were created from recycling hard plastics (like shampoo bottles). The bottles were upcycled to create the clip and plastic casing that could hold the Princess Medallion. Water bottles were recycled into the fabric of the bands, much like recycled fabrics for sustainable swimwear .

For even more photos of the accessories on board check out the hashtag #OceanMedallion on Instagram. But don't forget about the cute lanyard options too if you want to opt for something simpler!

What can you use a Princess Medallion for after your Cruise?

This is the unfortunate part that we're not thrilled about – you can't use your Princess Medallion for much after your cruise. (Just like when Disney World MagicBands' batteries stop working, it's just a bracelet with a memory.) The sustainability of the Princess Medallions definitely crossed our minds as travelers who are eco-conscious cruisers .

There is one use for it, however, that renders it somewhat useful after a cruise: it's magnetic! So you can slap that baby up on your fridge to hold a picture from the cruise, for instance. (Until you print some photos in a gorgeous vacation album , that is.)

Also, if you buy an accessory, like a wristband/bracelet or a necklace for the Princess Medallion to go into, you can reuse it for the next cruise you go on with the new Medallion that you get for your next cruise.

But you do get a new one for each Princess Cruise you take because it's linked to that specific sailing.

Like any technology, great if/when it works, but sucks when it doesn’t, especially if everyone is counting on it to work. Just got back from an Alaskan cruise on the Ruby Princess…system crashed and lost most of the previously uploaded data before we even got on the ship; embarkation reverted to all physical/manual methods. Onboard the Medallion worked great for services/purchases, but only worked about 60 percent of the time when unlocking my cabin. System still needs some debugging before I can give a thumbs up.

Thanks for your comment, Stephen. It’s very interesting to hear what works/doesn’t and on what ships/sailings. It’s funny how we want to be so technologically advanced in the world (and companies want to be on the cutting edge of tech too) but sometimes good ‘ole paper and pens work best!

It would be really nice if the thing would work. I have rung Princess numerous times to try and get help with the Medallion App and keep getting the runaround. Every time I go into Personal Information and Documents on the app, the app goes straight to “Link your Booking” and the link is all greyed out – cancel is the only option. I have since found out that the Medallion uses the American way of dates of birth (ie MM/DD/YYYY instead of the way Australians use it DD/MM/YYY). I assume that is also why I can’t access the app. SO frustrating.

We completely hear you! And we wish all of the United States would switch their date format to match the rest of the world. 😉 When the app/Medallion works it’s pretty cool. When it doesn’t, it’s frustrating. Hopefully with time they’ll work it all out!

How can I modify my profil on the App if I did a mistake on my birthday when I created it?

You might have to contact Princess to fix that!

When can I check in for embarkation?

Hi Marilyn-Rose, I’m unsure if you are asking about check in on the app or in person at the port?

– Mikkel

Somehow we lost the security photo of my husband. I have tried numerous times and ways to redo his photo but it says it’s not available and to try later. It’s very frustrating and hubby refuses to try again. Can we do it when we get to the port for our Christmas. Cruise. The app is great but can be annoying

Hi Sheila – it’s best to contact Princess Cruises directly for the answer to that question. We don’t know the answer, unfortunately. – Mikkel + Dan

We are on our last day of our Christmas cruise on the Princess Sky. The app was functional, and worked as expected most of the time. The medallions were flawless on board, but didn’t connect with several onshore vendors. I loved having the automated cabin entry!

We absolutely loved that it welcomed us to our room. Great to hear you loved it as well and that the app worked as expected! That’s great news. Thanks for your comment, Bernadine!

Thanks for this info. Suppose you have a bunch of relatives across 20 cabins. Is it easy to send a single message to all parties in your group, or do you have to select each recipient individually? What if you want to assign cabins in two groups (maybe Hatfield vs McCoy)? Say ten in one group and ten in another — then send a message to only one of those groups. If that were possible, would it still be fairly easy to send a message just to one party?

Hi Jon! We’re not sure because we have never tried! But if you’re onboard and test this out, let us know! 🙂

Would Expect a Whole Lot More from Princess

Princess claims to be ahead of the technology game with Medallion Net so I would expect the one and only tool Princess directs is to use is full of faults. Granted I can do pre-cruise checkins but we have 12 upcoming cruises and 2 are back to back and 3 are back to back to back and this app only allows you to visit excursions, make dining reservations and view itineraries on the 1st leg of any of the multiple cruises. We have a back to back on different ships and again, I can only see excursions or make dining plans on the first of the 2 cruises. Even though we are on different ships! Old app had numerous problems but there were ways to navigate through app to get things done albeit app was very slow to load. This app is way slower and useless in many of the needed functions. I have had to rely on using the online webpage and using my planner at Princess. I think if they are going to push us to use this app starting today (3/8), they should have made it much more usable then it is now.

Genuinely Terrible

This app is exceptionally and shockingly terrible. For a cruise line that forces you to use this app to do so much during your vacation they have really caused a huge frustration for passengers young and old. We were using the old app for most things because at least it was functional. However, today they discontinued that app so we are now forced to use the new nearly non functional app. I wish I could give you tips to make using it easier, but I don’t have any other than leaving a review and hoping they fix it. Princess, do better by your guests and fix this thing. It needs to be easy to use and straight forward instead of non functional and cumbersome. Until you can make an app that your average clientele can open and use without much to do you need to bring back easier ways to do things around the ship.

Disappointed

The boarding process was terrific. Alas, other aspects were troubling. Dining was a bit of a disaster. For instance, we had reservations for 6 PM at Concerto restaurant but waited 45 minutes in a long line to be seated ( and we were in the reservation line). Grew tired of waiting in lines. Specialty restaurants good. The worst, however, was our room steward… my wife’s jewelry disappeared and we reported it to security… the next day it reappeared in a place my wife insisted she never put it. Then, he failed two nights in a row to leave us breakfast room service cards. Then my wife’s watch disappeared… 😡the room make up was half assed… I had to complain and ask for a different steward. The first night when the jewelry disappeared, we weren’t able to open the safe to store valuables. Lastly, the staff in general seemed dour and not particularly interested or friendly as opposed to a recent 18 day cruise on the Norwegian Encore. Everyone there was smiling and super friendly. Not so the Princess Regal. The ship itself was nice and the fitness center was open 24 hours, which I liked. Just disappointed in Princess. I had taken five previous Princess cruises and always enjoyed the experience. Something obviously has changed and not for the better.

A ghost pianist and color-changing cocktails: Inside Princess Cruises' hidden magic club

princess cruises photo download

The pianist at a lounge on Princess Cruises’ new ship played the theme song from “Titanic” while guests sipped their cocktails.

It may seem like dark humor, but the musician is a ghost, after all. As the story goes, Isabella lives inside the space entertaining guests (she even takes requests).

In actuality, the instrument – which appeared to play itself – is part of Spellbound by Magic Castle, a new venue on the Sun Princess that combines dinner, drinks and magic. The speakeasy-like space was created in partnership with the Magic Castle , a legendary private club in Los Angeles.

Denise Saviss, the cruise line’s vice president for entertainment experience, said during a recent sailing that the Magic Castle has been a “well-protected secret.”

“As a members-only club, you can only attend by invitation, but they are keen to expand, and a partnership with us was a really great way to do that where we have a ton of international guests who may not ever get over to Hollywood and therefore it's not in reach,” Saviss said.

USA TODAY got a preview of Spellbound during a cruise ahead of its opening next month. Here’s what guests can expect.

What is Spellbound like?

Guests will start the evening with dinner in the Horizons Dining Room, choosing from a menu not found elsewhere on board (our preview did not include the dinner portion). They will then be escorted through an inconspicuous black door off the ship’s Piazza into Spellbound’s small foyer. There, a voice on a speaker tells the story of the Larsen family, who opened the Magic Castle in 1963, for a few minutes.

We were prompted to say the magic words (“Open sesame”), and the fireplace in front of us moved aside to reveal a music room and the Parlor Bar, lined with art and artifacts curated with help from the Magic Castle. A pair of handcuffs used by famed escape artist Harry Houdini even hung on one wall.

Isabella and her companion, a white bird named The Professor, can be seen in a portrait in the music room. She is the cousin of another ghost, Irma, who lives at the Magic Castle in California.

“Irma never loved to travel, but Isabella did,” said Kerry Lovegrove, Princess’ director of entertainment experience. “She traveled probably one too many times across the Atlantic, and then all of a sudden she was lost at sea. So she suddenly found the Sun Princess being built in Monfalcone and thought she’d attach herself onto that ship.”

Isabella disappears from view when she’s ready to play. The Professor, meanwhile, moves over to a nearby birdcage to enjoy the music (I saw him swaying to “My Heart Will Go On” at one point).

Behind the bar, a library holds its own not-so-hidden treasures. I picked up a gold rotary phone and heard someone ask “How can I help?” before changing their mind and hanging up. Guests might also see books float and fall, according to Lovegrove.

Even the drinks appear enchanted. One cocktail I ordered, The Magician, featured butterfly pea tequila that turned from blue to purple as the server poured it into the glass (also containing mezcal, lime, grapefruit, serrano peppers and agave).

Spellbound hosts magic in the bar as well as its 30-seat theater. Before theater seating opened, Mark Gibson kept us glued to his card deck, at one point finding the card a fellow guest chose by cutting the deck with the assistance of a tiny plunger. Woody Aragon also used cards in the theater, including asking an audience member to call someone who wasn’t in the room to pick one. (Spoiler: he named their chosen card correctly.)

The Parlor Bar magician will stay on the ship for a couple of months at a time, and the magician performing in the theater will change every cruise or two, but all are vetted by the Magic Castle team.

When will Spellbound by Magic Castle open?

Spellbound will open April 8 and is now available to book. Guests must be at least 13 to enter and just like at the venue’s Hollywood namesake, there is a mandatory dress code (my invitation called for cocktail attire).

The cruise line also will host its second Magic Castle Conjurer’s Cruise themed sailing on Sun Princess in November.

How much does Spellbound cost?

The experience costs $149 per person, including dinner, entertainment and unlimited drinks.

Spellbound will offer three theater shows a night and can accommodate a total of 90 guests (30 each night). Once they’re in the space, they can stay as long as they like (until it closes for the night). There are dinner seatings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m., and Spellbound is expected to close around midnight, though there is no hard closing time.

Best times to go on a cruise: We broke it down by region

Lovegrove said the venue serves as a new home base for magic, which already proved popular with Princess guests in other spaces on its ships. “If you love magicians, this is the spot for you.”

Feeling the love? Seas the day and time travel to yesteryear with future-forward Princess Cruises , when the original cast of TV’s iconic The Love Boat show—which aired for a decade on ABC; now streaming on Paramount Plus , Apple TV+ and other channels—sets sail from New York City on a round-trip voyage that anchors at picturesque ports in New England and Canada aboard the Enchanted Princess, August 31 - September 7, 2024 .

Original cast of The Love Boat.

This romance-themed rendezvous reunites actors Jill Whelan (whose role as Vicki Stubing, the ship captain’s daughter, was delightful), Bernie Kopell (as Doc), Fred Grandy (as purser Gopher) and Ted Lange (as bartender Isaac). They will interact with passengers at multiple events: a jubilant sail-away; a meet-and-greet, photo-and-autograph session; guests’ activities replete with prizes; and Q&A gatherings. There will also be a symbolic renewal of passengers’ wedding vows, officiated by the cast, with commemorative certificates.

Princess Cruises arranges wedding vow renewals.

In addition, classic comedy-drama episodes of The Love Boat will be shown at its Movies Under The Stars program outdoors on a gargantuan screen. The Love Boat trivia contests will be cheered. And cocktails to complement The Love Boat vibe will be toasted. Ezra Freeman, Princess Cruises’ real-life bartender who starred on The Real Love Boat —a reality-dating series that premiered on CBS in 2022; now streaming on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime —will join this spirited celebration.

The Love Boat: A Top Travel Influencer

This popular series (from the 1970s and ‘80s) introduced millions of American TV viewers to cruising, propelling the rise of passenger ships by showcasing life on the high seas as a fun, festive, fashionable, family-friendly and romantic vacation choice. It transformed travel horizons. Episodes spotlit a lively array of well-known guest-star celebrities. Story lines varied, but plots always concluded happily, further solidifying its audience draw. Now in worldwide syndication, reaching more than 90 countries, original The Love Boat episodes have been translated into more than 30 languages.

Ship-Shape Interview: Jill Whelan

Actor Jill Whelan, who is now a Celebrations Ambassador for Princess Cruises, and I talked about her passion for sailing.

Laura Manske: Two years ago, Princess Cruises orchestrated its first The Love Boat theme reunion, which sailed the Mexican Riviera. There continues to be strong sentimentality for its original cast.

Jill Whelan: Anytime I get together with my cast mates, it’s like coming home because we’re family. I truly mean that. This will be our second theme cruise since 2022. We were all touched and overwhelmed by the incredible response from guests. Nostalgia for the show still gets people excited. Princess was the ocean-going co-star of The Love Boat. That is unique.

Manske: Your key anticipated moments with passengers ahead?

Whelan: Well, certainly our cast reunion in the Princess Theater, when we will share our favorite memories, laugh a lot and take questions from the audience. The renewal of vows we host is also incredibly sweet. So many couples renew their love for one another on The Love Boat . We get to play a part in their special day.

Jill Whelan (as Vicki Stubing) with the late Gavin MacLeod (as Captain Stubing), her TV dad.

Manske: You starred on The Love Boat aboard the Pacific Princess from the age of 11 onward.

Whelan: I was so young. Gavin MacLeod welcomed me with open arms and such warmth and love, as I was playing his daughter. Remember, I was coming into an already hit show and I was the youngest. So romance wasn’t a cornerstone of my storyline just yet. But Gavin made me feel at ease, as did all of the cast members. I remember trying to take it all in, learn from everyone who came on set and appreciate the places we visited on our Princess cruises.

Manske: How did the show influence your views about romantic love as a teen growing up with this series.

Whelan: I did have my first kiss on The Love Boat . Let’s just say it wasn’t as magical as I’d hoped. As Gavin always said: ‘The show gave people something to dream about.’ I did fall in love with the romance of the sea and connecting with people on vacation. I guess as any teenager would, I did have fantasies about falling in love and sailing off into the sunset. And that did happen for me when I met my husband, Jeff, in 2016. We can’t cruise enough these days. We absolutely love it!

Manske: Share something, perhaps surprising, that brings you joy.

Whelan: Many of the Princess ships’ horns play The Love Boat theme song. I hear people singing the theme song when I’m onboard—and it makes me smile.

Enchanted Princess.

The 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess ’s round-trip reunion itinerary from New York City includes days in Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Rockland, Maine; Saint John, Canada (for the Bay of Fundy); and Halifax, Canada.

The Love Boat reunion trip embarks and disembarks in New York City.

Uploading picture to Medallion

Cool Cruiser

I did try searching for the answer to my question, but no luck.  I want to upload a profile picture for the medallion.  However, I only had the option of taking a new picture.  Does anyone know how to upload instead?  Thanks!

It’s been several months since I did it but it wasn’t to difficult.  I am not tech savvy but I did figure it out. If I remember correctly I was able to do it on my iPad.  Sorry I couldn’t be helpful.

Why not just take a new picture? I took a selfie of myself and then snapped pictures of each kid for their medallion photo.

I just did this. For the "security picture" it only lets you take a photo. This makes sense as photo should be recent and not one from 20 years ago with better "lighting". For profile picture (avatar) you can upload whatever you like. We did pics of our dog.

PMGS247

When I load up the app and go to Security Photo and choose Retake it brings up camera mode, but there are 3 buttons near the button of the screen.  The far left icon is a picture frame with an arrow above it.  Clicking this icon brings up my camera roll and I can choose any photo I like.

Perhaps it's different for the first security photo as opposed to editing an existing one? I don't think so, but I'm past that point and can't confirm. I can definitely edit my currently uploaded security photo with anything from my camera roll.  Per the rules it should be recent and more or less follow passport photo rules, so it's not a bad idea to just take a fresh one using the guide on-screen, but if you've already done the work to get a good one within those guidelines saved on your device you should be able to access it.

Similar to nattie for the profile photos my wife and my profile photos are silly ones of our pets.  I'm curious to see how this plays out on board.

Sea Hag

This is going off topic a bit, but it does have to do with the photo upload. Don't wear a hat. When I set up OM, I uploaded a photo that I took some time back. I was wearing a baseball hat. During check in on the Royal, they needed to take a new photo since hats aren't allowed for the security photo. The one I'd uploaded for hubby was fine. I have no idea why I was able to upload the security photos instead of taking new ones, but it's a fact that I was able to do that.

I do remember that when boarding someone did look at my photo and said it was ok to use.  It was a picture taken on our last cruise six months earlier.

I would go to ocean.com and do it that way. The app is awful and doesn't even render correctly on my XS Max.  I ended up doing it all from the web portal and it was easy.

I did a internet search for changing your profile picture and found this thread. It took me some time to figure it out but I finally did so I'm sharing what I learned. First, the previous post says to go to ocean.com but I couldn't figure out a way to sign in to my account. Maybe that's a recent change (today is 9/4/2021) . If you've already taken a security picture and said to use it for your profile picture, but now would like to change your profile picture to something fun, follow these steps (I only have Apple products so I don't know if Android is the same):

1.) Take the picture you want to be your profile picture or upload the image you want to use to your device (i.e. iPhone, iPad, etc.)

2.) Open the MedallionClass app and sign in.

3.) In the upper left, there will be an icon (I've changed mine already but I think it was probably my security picture prior to me changing it). Click on that until it opens the OceanReady Profile.

4.) Select the "journey" you are trying to change the profile picture for on the left side if you have more than one journey listed.

5.) Click on "My Account" about 1/2 way down in the middle.

6.) Above "Personal Information" you will see  + Change Photo. Click on that.

7.) When your camera pops up, click on the icon to the left of the camera icon. It should look like a picture with mountains and a sun on the right of the mountains. Click on that icon and it will pull up the photos you have saved to your device.

8.) Click on the picture or image you want to upload. You may have to move it around a little to get it to look right. When you are satisfied, click on the check mark.

Now when you go to your security picture in the Travel Checklist, Personal Information & Documents section, you will see it's still there and when you go to your profile picture, it's what you just selected. Don't be concerned that the icons above your security picture aren't your security picture anymore. It's just showing which account you have selected. You security picture is still there in the middle. Good luck.

TinaLee

Weirdly enough, when we first set up the app it automatically uploaded pics from our last Princess cruise - shots taken by the photographers. I think hubbies was one from dinner and mine was one from me standing on the deck (with the others I was standing with cut out of the photo). We used mine, but I picked one from his photos on my phone for his (taken in our back yard in full sunlight).

Not sure how I missed this the first time but even easier, from your Ocean Profile, scroll down to My Account. Then follow directions from step 6 above. Duh - way easier!

  • Members can book travel through the Costco Travel website.
  • Costco offers perks such as waived fees for additional drivers on rental cars.

Insider Today

Your Costco membership can get you more than bulk packages of toilet paper and $5 rotisserie chickens.

If you're a Costco member, you can book hotels, cruises, rental cars, and all-inclusive packages online through Costco Travel .

The Costco Travel website offers vacation packages at luxury resorts in destinations including Tahiti, French Polynesia; Cancún, Mexico; Costa Rica, and Hawaii, and cruises with companies such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean , and Princess, at heavily discounted prices.

A Costco Travel vacation package at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Maui, Hawaii, offers five nights for the price of four and includes the flight, rental car, a room with a partial ocean view, and the hotel's daily breakfast buffet.

The entire vacation package costs $4,851.45 when booked through Costco Travel. When booking the same room and dates directly through the Hyatt Regency's website, the hotel reservation costs $5,331.78 — without airfare to Maui or a rental car.

For smaller-scale trips, if you rent a car through Costco, additional driver fees are waived when renters book through Alamo, Enterprise, Budget, or Avis, Costco Travel's rental-car FAQs page says .

To book a trip, members need to make a profile on Costco Travel's website separate from the one they use to shop for other items.

Booking trips through any third-party website is inherently riskier than booking directly. If any unforeseen circumstances come up, it can be difficult to make changes or receive refunds.
