Scenic Train Rides on the Oregon Coast
Experience the beautiful Tillamook Coast in a way like no other: riding an historic steam locomotive. Sit back and feel the breeze blow through your hair as the train chugs along Tillamook Bay, revealing breathtaking views of both the bay and the ocean.
Stops along the shore for you to explore
The train starts its journey in Garibaldi, where the station has recently been renovated and expanded, with additions that make the facility more eco-friendly and provide space for community meetings. Come to town early to check out the station and explore a bit before you board. Enjoy the Garibaldi Museum , which catalogues the maritime history of the region, or visit the heart of the city, the working fishing marina. From Garibaldi, the train winds up the coast to lovely Wheeler, the picturesque little fishing village with views of the bay and surrounding hills. Check out the shops for antiques, fabrics, jewelry and more—the stores here are full of wonderful souvenirs and curiosities, showing off small-town charm. The final stop is Rockaway Beach , where you can grab a bowl of the most delicious clam chowder from the famous Old Oregon Smokehouse and take a stroll through the International Police Museum to learn something new.
(Note: you can hop on at either end of the line, so your order of stops may look different.)
Excursions are offered daily in the summer months
Founded in 2003, the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad operates scenic train rides along 46 miles of railroad that runs from the Port of Tillamook Bay to the east side of the Oregon Coast Range. Take a few extra days off around July 4th, and enjoy a train ride before you celebrate Independence Day in Rockaway Beach ! Excursions are offered daily in the summer months with special trips during the year, such as the:
- Santa Train for the holidays
- Four-course, three-hour dinner trains
- Pumpkin Train in the fall
A beautiful way to spend the day
Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of yesterday as the steam whistle blows and the wheels grind across the tracks. As the locomotive pulls into stops in Rockaway Beach and Wheeler, the ringing of the bell will turn heads in awe and wonder. Experience unique views of the Oregon Coast and Nehalem Bay on scenic train rides offered from the end of May through the beginning of September. Watch bald eagles and pelicans soar on the wind around you, dancing with the salty mist from the ocean waves crashing against exposed cliffs.
Enjoy the vintage-look shelters built alongside the tracks
The charm of these scenic train rides begins the moment you purchase your ticket onboard from the caboose that doubles as a gift shop. The depots in each town are vintage-look shelters built alongside the tracks and decorated by each community. And the train ride lets you explore without the hassle of driving. You’ll learn about the history of railroading and the local landscape unfolding before you.
So, reserve a seat for the whole family, because these 90-minute round-trip scenic train rides will delight young and old alike. All ages are welcome, and each train trip offers indoor and outdoor seating.

I first learned about Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad while talking to a rail fan who worked on the railroad. The second exposure was, while eating corndogs in Rockaway Beach, we watched the train go by. The next day we rode the train from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach and back. Our car's GPS took us to a location about a block from the station. After driving around for a few minutes we found a parking space near the station. We were about an hour early which allowed me time to wander around and photograph part of the museum's collection. Every member of the train's crew were informative and helpful. They made the ride a pleasure. The ride itself was everything I like to see in a tourist train ride: friendly people, educational narration, and beautiful scenery. We were dressed for cooler weather which enabled us to enjoy the open air car for the entire journey. A big plus was the docent who was riding in the car with us. He filled us in with interesting side comments. I need to find away to take this ride again. Next time I think we will spent more time in Rockaway Beach and take a later train back to Garibaldi.
i rate it a 5/Invasive Himalayan Blackberry. Sit on the left side of the car, and you get stuck with the same views of ditches filled to the brim with overgrown invasive Himalayan blackberry bushes actively choking out the local flora. They flip the train around in Wheeler, so you *don't* get a different view on the way back. Felt like a waste of money because of how boring the view was. Was hoping for even some fall colors on trees on the way through to enjoy but since the tracks butt up against the Nehalem River/Bay the entire time, these kinds of trees are scarce in this environment and you're mostly seeing weeds and ferns the entire ride unless you're on the 'right' side of the car. I was disappointed honestly, as I booked this weeks in advance, and it wasn't what I had hoped for. Save your money and drive up and down the coast yourself for better views.
If you like very slow train rides this is your train. The trip goes from Rockaway Beach to Wheeler . The scenery is nice and lot of the area is overgrowth which obstructs views. I think the area around the tracks could use some cleanup. The train departs from Rockaway travels forward in one direction to Wheeler and reverses back to Rockaway. This is about 8.0 miles that takes about an hour one way. I can only guess the reason for the short distance traveled is possibly because this section of track is no longer in use commercially or decommissioned. If you have young ones on n the family they would likely enjoy the trip.
We took their first ever Halloween themed coast ride, and it was marvelous. They served hot apple cider, gave out these cute little treat bags and passed out candy. Everyone dressed up in costume, even the train conductor! 10/10 recommend this to anyone who wants to see the coastline. I would say to maybe take an anti- nausea before hand, the train does rock around a bit.
Rode from Rockaway Beach to Garibaldi and back with my 3-year-old and had a lovely time. There are three cars to pick from: a fully enclosed car, a car with a ceiling but no windows, and a fully open car. You can move about from car to car. The ride is 30 minutes each direction with a 30-minute stop, making for 90 minutes in total. The ride is beautiful. You pass Smith Lake and gorgeous views of the coast. We even saw a couple Bald Eagles. The folks working are passionate about what they do - so kind, welcoming and informative. There is a playground within walking distance of both stops. We didn't spend much time in Garibaldi but Rockaway had a large parking lot right next to the train. There is a lovely and delicious bakery right across the street along with a shop for ice cream, salt water taffy, beach toys, etc. There is also a tasty smoke shop along with other restaurants. And the beach is right there. Plenty to do within walking distance of the Rockaway Beach stop!
Okay...I have no idea what the bad reviews are about. First of all...it is antique rail system. So yes, the cars are old. It is not, nor is it meant to be, a bullet train. It is quaint, slower and it basic. I also don't know what these reviewers were looking at, but you can see my pics that include a ton of water shots, both bay and ocean, turtles, an eagle and cranes. Maybe they looked out of the wrong window. For those wondering, this is a non profit trying to preserve and share history. It is not club med. But it's lovely and way UNDERPRICED. The staff and volunteers do their best.

Great experience during the holiday time. amazing experience for kids and family. The specific train ride we signed up for had hot chocolate, cookies, and SANTA! Be sure to get the seats on the West side. I highly recommend you book super early for the Xmas ride and wear many layers during the winter months, very chilly yet cozy ride!
We took the dinner train Saturday July 15,23, purchased tickets, selected the tri-tip, what we got was roast, cold & frozen vegetables, water glasses still had the price tags on them, the salad had a strawberry dressing & strawberries were mushy and gross, the cheese board well that had been sitting for a long time, the bread was dried, the cheese was dry, and the grapes were mostly rotten. Then to top it off they were understaffed. Then there were a set of couples that boarded that were already intoxicated and during the course of the ride they were continued to be served more alcohol, which in turn they continued to get louder and louder & not one staff member asked them to be quieter. The train ride was rather hot, I would recommend that a fan be added if possible. The train ride could have been a tad shorter and the price was way overpriced for the meal, now I know that if cost to run the train and staff, but if you sign up for the meal they are offering then get something completely different they should let the customers know. We did have a tag on our table stating tri-tip and like I said got roast. The table next to us, and around us complained that their meals were cold as well. I would take the other rides that don't offer the meal and go have a nice dinner somewhere else.
Dried bread, cheese was dry and the strawberries on salad mushy and gross, and the grapes most were rotten
Was supposed to be tri-tip but got roast and cold/frozen still veggies
We rode the Candy Cane express, it's only a 1 hour tip north to Rockaway and then back. We were in the last car, so it seemed to rock back and forth quite a bit, but it only travels about 10 mile per hour. The car interiors are worn, but have seen a lot of enjoyment. The inside and out are all lite up with lights and a tree. They deliver a decent hot cocoa to you and a note card to write a letter to Santa. Then Santa comes by to take photos and talk, and pick up your letter. Very sweet couple playing the Clauses. We were told to dress warm, but the heater in our car was working so not needed. The only downside is the windows on the inside get very foggy so you are constantly wiping them down. So not the clearest view out the window, Im sure a summer ride would be great. There is a bathroom on the train.
It was fun, relaxing, fresh air - a chance to think and get away from the frenetic pace of just about everything and anything happening all at once with way too little time to ever do anything with the chump change. I got to see the groves of trees, the meadows, the bays, the marshes, the sea merging with the beach and the sky. Nobody insisted on talking at me or anything at all. It was serene.
