JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Pablo Cruise, which formed in 1973, had eight studio albums and five singles that reached the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Among their biggest hits were “Whatcha Gonna Do” and “Love Will Find a Way.”

The group is in town to perform at The Florida Theatre , opening for Don Felder at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Two of the original members of Pablo Cruise, Cory Lerios and David Jenkins, joined us on The Morning Show to talk about their journey that began 51 years ago and the fact that there really isn’t a band member named Pablo Cruise.

But, “Pablo and “Cruise” have a very real meaning for the band’s members

The Continuing Voyage of Pablo Cruise

One of the more interesting aspects of pop culture is when a musician or band whose songs have not graced the charts in years (sometimes decades), suddenly has an unexpected resurgence. It could be from a song well-placed on a movie, TV, or video game soundtrack. Or a remake. Or some namechecking by/collaboration with a younger artist.

For ‘70s rockers Pablo Cruise, though, the zeitgeist came in the form of a garment. As in the band T-shirt that Will Ferrell’s lead character wears for a chunk of screen time in the 2008 comedy Stepbrothers . And no one was more pleasantly surprised than the band themselves.

“We had to sign off on it, but had no idea how much it would be in the movie! And that gave us some great publicity. It got our phones ringing again,” says keyboardist/vocalist Cory Lerios. “They wanted us to walk the red carpet at the premiere, and I didn’t want to. We didn’t have anything to talk about! But we did and when reporters asked us what we were doing there, we said ‘We have a T-shirt in the movie!’”

Guitarist/vocalist David Jenkins adds that the band got to play the after-screening premiere party, joined on stage by Ferrell and co-star John C. Reilly. But there was an even bigger benefit for him. “For six to ten hours, my son thought I was the coolest guy in the planet!” he laughs. “He was 12 years old, and his dad knew Will Ferrell!”

Today, Pablo Cruise is in the midst of its busiest touring schedule in nearly 20 years. And while part of that is due to the continued appeal of classic rock among fans middle aged and older, Lerios says their audiences are made up increasingly of multiple generations and younger faces.

“I always make jokes to some of the audience that they’re too young to be there!” he laughs. “But now, we can have a lot of and fun interplay with the audience. Our [original] fans are older and not screaming all the time, so they come to hear the music. We joke with them that we want them to get up, but slowly!”

“It’s interesting and encouraging when parents bring their kids to the show,” Jenkins adds. “Afterward, I love seeing the look in their faces when they realize that people our age can still rock, and they get fired up over classic rock.”

Pablo Cruise first formed in 1973 in San Francisco when some members of the bands Stoneground and It’s a Wonderful Day joined forces. The original lineup included Lerios, Jenkins, Steve Price (drums), and Bud Cockrell (bass), with Jenkins and Cockrell sharing lead vocals.

The party line is that their name came from the idea that “Pablo” represented a down-to-earth person ,and “Cruise” a fun and laid back attitude toward life (in a TV interview for the show “Through the Decades,” Jenkins would admit that, um, there also might have been some LSD involved).

Their self-titled debut came out two years later, but it would be their third record A Place in the Sun and the single “Whatcha Gonna Do?” that launched their career, hitting #6 on the charts. The lyric was inspired by Jenkins’ troubled romantic relationship at the time, with Lerios asking his bandmate he was going to do when she left him. But despite having “hit” written all over it, it was not the album’s first single release.

“I thought it should have been the first single, but it came out after ‘A Place in the Sun,’ because that’s what the record company wanted. When it did come out and was a big hit, I felt vindicated!” Jenkins says. “And the sort of duet part with me and Bud made it something special. I wish I had tapped into that more.”

Cockrell abruptly left the group, replaced by former Santana bassist Bruce Day. The next album, Worlds Away, offered the equally big hit “Love Will Find a Way” (also peaking at #6), and equally inspired by the same woman as “Whatcha Gonna Do?”

“It took me a whole frickin’ year to get over that relationship! But at least I got two great songs out of it!” Jenkins laughs. Other minor hits like “Don’t Want to Live Without It,” “I Want You Tonight,” and “Cool Love” would follow, with more albums and lineup changes, but Pablo Cruise would call it quits in 1986.

Lerios would go on to score a lot of TV shows and movies (including “Baywatch”), while Jenkins would form country rockers Southern Pacific, work as a sideman to some big names, and occasionally fly the Pablo Cruise flag. That was sometimes with Price, whose “day gig” was heading a successful e-learning company. Bruce Day passed in 1999.

Flash forward to 2004 and the four original members regrouped to play Price’s wedding. The groom, Jenkins, and Lerios reformed Pablo Cruise the next year. The current lineup also includes Larry Antonio (bass/vocals) and newer addition Robbie Wyckoff, now handling the majority of lead vocals. Cockrell died in 2010.

Still, having 75% of the original lineup together for a band inching toward 50 years is pretty damn good. “We’ve been a three-legged dog for most of the time. If we didn’t have that kind of camaraderie, we would be doing this,” Lerios offers.

“When we were out on the road and had hit songs on the radio all the time and playing to a young audience, it’s almost surreal to look back on it. If we did anything wrong, it’s we just stopped touring as a band. But our show today is way better because we took that time off. We are really appreciating it now.”

Jenkins adds “Having Steve and Cory and me together playing the songs…there’s a reason that it works. The songs are one thing, but the lineup is the element that makes it happen.” When asked what one piece of advice the David of today would give his younger version, it’s this.

“I would tell him to dig in deeper to the writing and just do more. And stay focused on that. Don’t tire out and don’t get lazy. We have a nice body of work, but I wish I had written more songs.”

The music of Pablo Cruise – and in particular their two big singles – are essential components of any Yacht Rock playlist, a throwback genre simply getting more and more popular today.

“We were a Yacht Rock band before there were Yacht Rock bands! I mean, we’re Pablo Cruise,” Lerios laughs. “And so many of our songs were about the islands and the beach and the water. We were always moving in that ‘escape’ direction.”

For his part, Jenkins is happy to be lumped in with the same company as Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and his friend Steve Lukather of Toto. Pablo Cruise has even sat in one gig with the Yacht Rock Revue – the country’s premier Yacht Rock cover band.

“Pete [Olson, Revue co-founder] is always telling me where they’re playing and asking if I want to sit in. And they learn the songs!” Jenkins says. “And they sell out shows! But it cracks me up. People show up, wear this silly captain’s hats, and have a good time.”

The current version of Pablo Cruise put out a live CD/DVD package in 2017, and is working on a new song, but expectations are modest. “It’s not like we’re going release the song and radio is going to jump on it and fans are going to buy it. Things don’t work like that anymore,” Jenkins says, noting that they’ve also signed to new management.

As for Lerios – whose sons are also songwriters/producers and spearhead the band Fox Wilde – he’s excited that Pablo Cruise is sailing smoothly, and excited about the waters ahead. “There’s a lot of good energy around us now,” he says. “If we had the guys in the band then that we do now, we never would have stopped!”

Pablo Cruise

In 1975 Pablo Cruise released its first A&M album simply entitled Pablo Cruise. The album cover was shot in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and it featured a huge gorilla standing front and center. The band, David Jenkins (guitars, vocals), Cory Lerios(keyboards, vocals), Bud Cockerel (bass, vocals) and Steve Price (drums, percussion) were no where in sight. At that point there was a bit of a mystique surrounding Pablo Cruise and when asked what Pablo Cruise meant, the well-rehearsed answer went something like this: “Pablo”, represents an honest, real, down to earth individual, and “Cruise” depicts his fun loving, easy going attitude towards life: In essence that’s what Pablo Cruise music is all about. Honest, real down to earth vocals, accompanied by fun yet elegant, infectious grooves. To hear Pablo Cruise on record is one thing, but to experience the band live is an exhilarating event!

From 1975 to 1985 the band toured the United States, Canada and Japan extensively, welcoming fans to “Climb Aboard The Good Ship Pablo Cruise.” Reaching the top 10 with mega hits like “Whatcha Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye?” and “Love Will Find A Way,”and several other top 20’s, the band went on to sell several million albums and singles collectively and established themselves as well respected writers and performers within the industry. They appeared on numerous TV shows, including Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dinah Shore Hour and in 1979 they broke Elvis Presley’s attendance record at the Sahara Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, becoming the first rock band to play a casino showroom. They also became the first rock band to grace the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, but by 1985 after completing several national tours and releasing 7 studio albums in all, the band decided to take a hiatus......one that lasted nearly 20 years.

DAVID JENKINS (guitar, vocals)

Throughout the late 80’s, original lead vocalist David Jenkins continued touring and garnered acclaim in world of country music with the slightly ahead of their time country-rock band Southern Pacific. As they racked up hits like “Midnight Highway,” the chart topper “New Shade of Blue” and “Honey I Dare You” (co-written by Jenkins) the band toured all over the U.S. In 1992 Dave connected with Hawaii’s native son Kapono Beamer, and in ’95 the duo released the album “Cruisin’ on Hawaiian Time,” that became a critics favorite as well as being nominated for Hawaii’s prestigious Hoku Award for “Album Of The Year”. Dave has recorded with many music industry greats such as: Micky Hart, Buddy Miles, The Jefferson Starship, Huey Lewis, Emmylou Harris, The Doobie Bros. to name just a few!....Since ’99 Jenkins has joined forces with the composite group, Rock & Pop Masters, that includes some of the great singers of the ’70’s and ’80’s. In May of 2011, Dave traveled to Iraq to perform for the troops with Bobby Kimball (Toto) and Bill Champlin (Chicago)... The troops were thrilled to have them even though the band barely escaped being blown off the stage.... for real!!! CORY LERIOS (keys, vocals)

Pianist, vocalist Cory Lerios decided to turn his writing and producing skills to Film and Television. In 1986 he landed his first scoring opportunity when he was asked to write the music for the now “cult classic” “One Crazy Summer” starring Demi Moore and John Cusack. In 1987 Lerios landed his first network series, scoring ABC’s critically acclaimed “Max Headroom.” ABC’s “O’Hara and “Police Story” immediately followed. Writing to “picture” became Cory’s new found passion and in 1989 Cory partnered with long time friend and composer John D’Andrea. Together they formed Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks and aside from scoring 300 episodes of “Baywatch,” they garnered several Emmy Nominations and won the coveted award for “Music Direction for soap “Days Of Our Lives.” Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks went on to produce countless hours of TV scores and themes including “Diagnosis Murder,” “Flipper,” and “Marshall Law.” In 2005 Lerios and D’Andrea parted ways and Cory has continued to write themes and underscore for several shows including Disney’s “Kim Possible,” Universal’s “Land Before Time.” In 2015 Cory released an EP under his pseudonym, “Cory Charles” www.corycharles.com entitled “If I Could Change Anything, It Would Be You.” (Cory’s credits) www.corylerios.com

LARRY ANTONINO (bass, vocals)

Bassist and vocalist extraordinaire Larry Antonino is a very busy musician and aside from playing with Pablo Cruise, Larry has kept his calendar full through the years, playing with the some of music’s finest. Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Ronnie Laws, Jeff Beck and Al Jarreu, Jennifer Holiday, Bobby Caldwell all share one thing in common and that’s Larry Antonino. Larry also had a classic role in the Tom Hanks movie “That Thing You Do” where he appeared as “The Wolfman”…. If you saw the movie, Larry’s role was unforgettable! The newest member of Pablo Cruise, Robbie Wyckoff, Lead Vocals and percussion has a huge history in not only live performance, but television and film as well. Robbie recently finished up 5 years of international touring with The Roger Waters Band. (Pink Floyd) Robbie has also shared the stage with Michael McDonald, Keith Emerson, The Gregg Rolie Band, Jackson Brown, and Barbara Streisand to name a few. His voice can be heard on several Disney T.V. series including Phineas and Ferb, The Emperor’s New Skool, The Replacements and he’s appeared on The Voice, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. SERGIO GONZALEZ (drums, percussion)

Veteran Drummer, Sergio Gonzalez has played, recorded and performed live with many top artists including Jennifer Lopez, Queen Larifah, Steve Martin, Gavin Degraw, Don Was, Jessie J and Keb Mo. Simply said, Sergio likes to hit things. A professional "hit man" if you will, but he hits them in such and extraordinary way, that it has allowed him to perform all over the world, twice over. He has performed privately for the Queen of England and the Sultan of Brunei. After high school he was invited to play with a traveling gospel group and traveled around the world for three years. His highlight was playing in Bethlehem, Israel on Christmas Eve. Soon after that he auditioned for the main show Band at Walt Disney World in Florida, working there for three years, then transferring over to Disneyland, California for three more years. It was there where he started meeting and playing with some very talented and special friends whom he is very grateful to have in his life. Sergio's has a vast range of experience from World music, Jazz, R&B, Rock and Latin meld together to create his unique and personal style and groove. The Legend of Pablo Cruise

Growing up in Caracus, Venezuala, Pablo Cruz never dreamed of getting to America, let alone becoming a rock and roll star. He sang as a child, and by his teens became pretty good strumming a guitar that belonged to his older brother Francisco. One sultry night in the summer of 1976, while performing with a merengue band in a tiny local joint named Calcaño’s Café,  destiny found him – along with Georgetown Records executive, Ignacio Irribarren, who was on vacation visiting his family in Caracus. “He stormed up to the stage after our show and roared ‘I’m taking you with me to Nashville and I’m changing your name!’” recalled Cruz. “He’d been chugging wine most of the night so I didn’t believe him at first. But somehow he convinced me that he was serious. Maybe it was his corduroy suit in August,” Pablo said with a laugh.

With his keen marketing instincts and an unorthodox knack for discovering new artists, Irribarren had earned the music industry nickname “Theta Man.” Putting those talents quickly to work, he issued outlandish press releases proclaiming the next Richie “La Bamba” Valens, hired Cruz a backing band of established session players and got him right into the studio, where the magic happened…almost immediately. “It took me a week or so to fully learn to write songs in English,” said Cruz, who amazingly had primarily known only what he’d picked up studying the character Mr. French on reruns of Family Affair until then. The work was recorded, mixed and ready to go in just three months. But Irribarren had one promise still to fulfill. “He said to me, ‘We’re not going to change the way your name sounds, just the spelling.’ I was skeptical, of course, and proud of my family heritage,” said Pablo. “But he was adamant, and boorish, and we’d already come this far.” And so was born the brief pop phenomenon of a man named Pablo Cruise.

The subsequent album Cruise Control was released in February of 1977, and the easy soul of its lead single, ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ proved irresistible to light rock audiences burned out on disco and not ready for punk. As Pablo’s smash record rapidly climbed the charts, so too did his notoriety. Relocating to New York City, he quickly became a regular at famed Studio 54, hanging out with the Liza Minnelli and Diane Von Furstenberg crowd, seen canoodling with the likes of Deborah Harry and pre-Jagger Jerry Hall, and striking up a fast friendship with Andy Warhol, whose unforgettable portrait of Pablo Cruise would stand alongside the Campbell’s Soup Cans and Marilyn Monroe to become one of Warhol’s best-known works ever. One memorable night at Elaine’s, the notorious Upper East Side celebrity eatery, Pablo’s fame reached a particularly farcical level. Tom Cruise, fresh off his breakout success for Risky Business , approached him at his table and began insisting that they were related. “Dios mio, he’d obviously been doing a lot of coke,” giggled Pablo, “so I just let him believe it. Heck, maybe his name had been re-spelled, too!”

Sadly, like so many other overnight success stories, glory for Pablo was excruciatingly short-lived. Unable to recreate the mellow gold of ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ and finding himself supplanted in the popular music scene by more cutting-edge acts like Dan Hill and Christopher Cross, Cruise’s prominence faded precipitously. In desperation, star-maker Irribarren attempted to re-brand Cruise as a leather-clad, heavy metal act, hastily producing the would-be comeback album Cruisin’ For A Bruisin’ . But audiences proved indifferent to Pablo’s new tough guy persona, and less than three short years after his splashy arrival from Caracus, Pablo Cruise faded into rock and roll oblivion.

Two later notable attempts via old Hollywood connections endeavoring to resuscitate Cruise’s utterly dormant career proved painfully fruitless. Will Farrell, a super-fan during Cruise’s brief pop supremacy and hoping to help him get placed on an oldies circuit, prominently wore a Pablo Cruise t-shirt in his moving fraternal relationship film Step Brothers . But still, no offers materialized. And in the final indignity, another bid to revive Pablo’s name and at least garner some possible wedding and bar mitzvah gigs was sabotaged when a perplexing typo in the script for underdog stoner comedy Napoleon Dynamite led to the secondary character being named Pedro rather than Pablo, thus rendering what became the popular plot line of “Vote For Pedro” entirely pointless.

“Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye? / Whatcha gonna do when she is gone?” went the telling title line to Pablo Cruise’s masterwork, his one brilliant, indelible mark on the pop music world. Little did Pablo Cruise, nee Cruz, know that she – that fickle lady named fate – would pass him so soon. That she was merely, if you will, cruising by.

Um, just kidding. Pablo Cruise was a popular late ‘70’s smooth rock band – who actually did have the hit song ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ – made up of four guys from San Francisco, none of whom was named Pablo Cruise. When the quartet were asked which one is Pablo they would commonly answer, “He’s the guy in the middle.”

And yeah, it’s not April Fool’s Day, but everyone suspects a little deceitful nonsense on April 1st, and not, say, December 5th.

BG: Ya had me goin’ there for a few paras until the Tom Cruise/RB ref. I know that movie came out in Summer of 83 and I thought there’s no way this singer from PC could hv remained in the public’s thoughts for 6 yrs on from that single. That gave it away for me. Too funny, dude. RMac

Pablo Cruise

Pablo Cruise is an American pop / rock band from San Francisco currently composed of David Jenkins ( guitar and vocals ), Cory Lerios ( keyboards and vocals ), Sergio Gonzalez ( drums ), Larry Antonino ( bass and vocals ) and Robbie Wyckoff ( vocals and percussion ). Formed in 1973, the band released eight studio albums over the next decade, during which time five singles reached the top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group underwent several personnel changes and split up in 1986. The original lineup—Jenkins, Lerios, Price and Bud Cockrell —reunited briefly in 2004, and the group continues to tour today with two out of the original four members present. [1]

Pablo Cruise began in San Francisco, in 1973, with former members of Stoneground ( Cory Lerios on keyboards and vocals , David Jenkins as vocalist and on guitar and Steve Price on drums) and It's a Beautiful Day ( Bud Cockrell on bass and vocals ). [2] Lerios had formed a band, Together, while at Palo Alto High School . His classmate, Steve Price, signed on as a roadie (because he owned a van), then joined the group on drums when their drummer left. They were eventually to find their way into Stoneground, where they were joined by Jenkins (originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan ).

Initially, many fans assumed that Pablo Cruise was the name of one of the members of the band. When asked the question, the band, which is a quartet, would answer, "He's the guy in the middle." When asked what Pablo Cruise meant, the band would say that "Pablo represents an honest, real, down- to-earth individual; and Cruise depicts his fun-loving and easygoing attitude towards life." [3]

With the help of their new manager, Bob Brown (who would later steer Huey Lewis and the News to stardom), the band signed to A&M Records and released its first album in May 1975, a minor success self-titled Pablo Cruise , [4] and their second album in March 1976, titled Lifeline . [5] Their second album achieved slightly greater success than their first, but still only managed to chart at No. 139 in the United States . The instrumental "Zero to Sixty in Five" from Lifeline was used as theme music for various sports television shows. That success encouraged the band to try their hand at more film and TV scoring. [6]

1977's A Place in the Sun was the turning point in the band's career, as they finally entered the mainstream music scene with hit singles " Whatcha Gonna Do? " (No. 6) [5] and the title track " A Place in the Sun " (No. 42), the album peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard 200 . [7]

In the middle of 1977, Bud Cockrell left to form a duo with his wife and former It's a Beautiful Day bandmate, Pattie Santos, and was replaced by Bruce Day (who had played in a band with Carlos Santana before his Santana days). [5]

Day's first album with the band was the RIAA platinum-selling 1978 album Worlds Away , which spawned the hits " Love Will Find a Way " and "Don't Want to Live Without It". [5] [8] It also featured a cover of Australian singer-songwriter Peter Allen 's hit single " I Go to Rio " and the follow-up album was 1979's Part of the Game that spawned the hit "I Want You Tonight". [8] Also that year, Pablo Cruise contributed the song "Reach For The Top" to the movie Dreamer and the following year, they placed "What've You Got To Lose" with the film Inside Moves .

Day's tenure was short-lived and after he left the band in 1980, he was replaced by the session bassist John Pierce who, alongside newly added second guitarist Angelo Rossi, debuted on the 1981 album Reflector , [5] and it spawned the band's last Top 40 hit " Cool Love ". [8]

In mid-1981, Price left suddenly and was initially succeeded by Donny Baldwin , who had played with Elvin Bishop and would move on to Jefferson Starship by the summer of 1982. David Perper was next to take over the drum throne and Angelo Rossi was replaced by Stef Birnbaum (aka Stef Burns) after just one album.

In 1983 the group released Out of Our Hands , [5] which featured a change of sound to a more "'80s pop keyboard direction", with Lerios bringing in more synthesizers and downplaying the piano , which had until then been a characteristic of the group's sound, and Price played drums on two songs. The band then toured again that year with another new member, Jorge Bermudez, on vocals and percussion. Mostly due to the rising popularity of new wave , the album struggled with sales. By the end of 1984, Pierce, Birnbaum and Bermudez had left and the group's contract with A&M had come to an end.

In 1985 the four original members, Jenkins, Lerios, Price and Cockrell, reunited hoping to score a new record deal. [5] It was not to be, however, and the group called it quits in 1986. [9]

Jenkins moved on to join country rockers Southern Pacific in 1987, alongside former Doobie Brothers members Keith Knudsen and John McFee and Creedence Clearwater Revival bass player Stu Cook . After leaving Southern Pacific in 1989, Jenkins relocated to Hawaii where he was introduced to Hawaiian artist Kapono Beamer and began writing music with him. This eventually led to their album Cruisin' On Hawaiian Time (2006), a collection of songs dedicated to the Hawaiian Islands.

In the meantime, Cory Lerios worked on movie and television scores, providing the music for the popular 1990s series Baywatch , among many others.

Around 1996, Jenkins and Cockrell reunited once again as Pablo Cruise, but Lerios and Price were unable to rejoin at the time. Keyboardist Kincaid Miller and drummer Kevin Wells (ex- Clover ) were brought in to replace them, and percussionist James Henry also appeared with the band as an occasional special guest from 1999 to 2008. Additionally, second guitarist Kenny Emerson and two additional backup singers, Regina Espinoza and Carolyn, were also recruited (from 1999 to 2002) for added stage attraction. Drummer Billy Johnson (ex-Santana) frequently sat in for Wells during this same time.

Former bassist Bruce Day died on June 30, 1999, in Windsor, California , from unknown causes at the age of 48.

In June 2004 all four original Pablo members were back together playing again at Steve Price's wedding. This led to three of the four—Jenkins, Lerios and Price—deciding to reconvene permanently. Cockrell was not involved this time and George Gabriel joined on bass and vocals. During his time away from Pablo Cruise, Price went on to become a leading figure in providing E-learning and also formed his own aerial photography company. Gabriel left Pablo Cruise in November 2009 and was replaced by veteran bassist Larry Antonino (who has worked with Air Supply , Jeff Beck , Ronnie Laws and many others) in 2010.

Bud Cockrell died on March 6, 2010, after complications from diabetes. He was 59.

On November 8, 2011 Pablo Cruise released their first live album, It's Good to Be Live , on the Red Recording label. The package included both a live CD and DVD. The live performances were taken from concerts performed at the Blue Goose in Loomis , CA on July 9 and 10, 2010. The CD also featured new versions of their songs "A Place in the Sun" (featuring fellow Red Recording artist Katrina ) and "Love Will Find a Way" (with Ty Taylor of Vintage Trouble ).

In 2015 Cory Lerios released an EP, If I Could Change Anything It Would Be You! , under the name Cory Charles.

In 2017 the band was joined by singer/percussionist Robbie Wyckoff who had appeared with Pink Floyd 's Roger Waters on his The Wall Live tour.

In February 2020 the band finished the Rock and Romance Cruise, which turned out to be their final shows for 2020. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the band worked on a new single, "Breathe", via Skype , with new drummer Sergio Gonzalez in place of Steve Price, who had retired from the group due to health issues. The band resumed playing shows in the summer of 2021 and continues to tour, mainly in and around California. [ citation needed ]

Our Top 10 Pablo Cruise Songs looks back at a 1970s band that had a couple of significant hits in the 70s that defined adult contemporary rock. Pablo Cruise was just one of those bands you associated with summer like you did the Beach Boys, Chicago, and, to some extent, The Mamas and The Papas. The band had their two biggest hit singles released a summer apart in 1977 and 1978 on the albums A Place In The Sun in 1977 and Worlds Away  in 1978.

Pablo Cruise released seven albums throughout their career. Their first album was released in 1975, entitled Pablo Cruise . The band’s lineup on their first record consisted of David Jenkins, Steve Price, Bud Cockrell, and Cory Lerios. That lineup would release the band’s first three albums, Pablo Cruise, Lifeline, and A Place In The Sun . On the band’s fourth album, Bruce Day replaced Bud Cockrell on bass. The group would release three more albums after Worlds Away, including Part of the Game , Reflector, and Out Of Our Hands.

# 10 – Raging Fire

We open our top 10 Pablo Cruise Songs list with the song “Raging Fire.” While we always preferred the up-tempo Pablo Cruise songs over their ballads, they did have some great moments on some of their albums that were filled with sweet-sounding mid-tempo ballads. The harmonies on the track “Raging Fire” echo The Eagles just a bit on this one. The song was released on the band’s breakthrough album, A Place In The Sun .

# 9 – Worlds Away

Pablo Cruise released two blockbuster albums in a row in the late 1970s. The album Worlds Away was the follow-up record to their hit album A Place In The Sun . These two albums elevated the band’s status as hit makers and artists. In the ninth spot on our top 10 Pablo Cruise songs list, we present the title track from the Worlds Away album. This is a great one.

# 8 – I Want You Tonight

It’s incredible how many rock bands went disco in the late 1970s looking to cash in on the craze that swept the world. Pablo Cruise was no exception. Some bands did it better than others, depending on their original style. Pablo Cruise already had an R&B dance feel to some of their songs, so this was not a stretch compared to when bands like Kiss and Queen went the disco route for an album. The single “I Want You Tonight,” was released in 1979 on the album Part of the Game . 

# 7 – Zero To Sixty In Five

If you were a loyal Pablo Cruise fan in the 1970s or have ever seen the band live, then you would agree that besides the band’s great vocals harmonies, this was a group of musicians that could play their butts off.  We can think of no better way to argue that fact than by presenting this great instrumental entitled “Zero To Sixty In Five.” The song was released on the band’s album Lifeline . The album was released in 1976. It was the group’s second record.

# 6 – Island Woman

Continuing with our top 10 Pablo Cruise songs list, we turn to the band’s first album, Pablo Cruise . The album was released in 1975.  “Island Woman” was the album’s opening track. The song was written by David Batteau, David Jenkins, and Cory Lerios. The song opens with that great Pablo Cruise rhythm piano comp that welcomes the band’s great vocal sound and introduces the world to the sound of Pablo Cruise. The song was released as a single but just missed breaking the Billboard Top 100. Still, it was an excellent start for the band that would break into the Billboard Top 100 not too far in the future. There is some excellent guitar playing on this track!

# 4 – Cool Love

With the release of the single “Cool Love,” the band’s commercial success that they had enjoyed with the A Place In The Sun . and Worlds Away albums would begin to fade away. “Cool Love” would become the band’s last top 20 single in the United States. It peaked at number thirteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song was released on the album Reflector . The record was released in 1981.

# 3 – I Go To Rio

If there is one song that always got the audiences up and dancing at Pablo Cruise concerts, it is the excellent track “I Go To Rio.” The song was released on the Worlds Away album. The song was written and originally recorded by Peter Allen. “I Go To Rio”  was the third single released from the Worlds Away album.

# 2 – Love Will Find A Way

As we close in on the number spot on our top 10 Pablo Cruise songs list, we turn to the follow-up single and album, A Place in the Sun . The song “Love Will Find A Way” was a strong follow-up for the band and kept them at the top of the charts again. The album Worlds Away was an even more substantial effort than A Place in the Sun . Every song on the record was great.  “Love Will Find A Way” served as the lead single from the album.

The song reached the number six position on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 78, matching the success of  “Whatcha Gonna Do,” released in 1977. Along with Walter Egan’s “Magnet and Steel” and Toby Beau’s “Angel Baby,” “Love Will Find Away” was one of the most popular songs on the radio that summer.

# 2 – Whatcha Gonna Do?

The Pablo Cruise single “Whatcha Gonna Do” was the band’s breakout single that made them a household name in 1977.”Whatcha Gonna Do” would become the biggest hit of the band’s career. The song hit number six on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the band’s only top 10 U.S. hit. “Love Will Find A Way” would reach the top 10 the following year. The song did even better in Canada, hitting number one in 1977. I guess they dream of the hot sun in the land of the cold. “Whatcha Gonna Do” was released on the album A Place In The Sun . The song was written by David Jenkins and Cory Lerios

# 1 – A Place In The Sun

The great Pablo Cruise song “A Place In The Sun” was the title track to their 1976 album  A Place In The Sun. Bud Cockrell and Cory Lerios wrote the song . While the band had bigger hits than this, the song has become the group’s signature song among the band’s most loyal fans. This is probably the highlight of the group’s concerts. We have always loved this one. It has a classic chorus as if it’s been around forever. We just had to place this at number one.

Man, these guys are/were so good. Loved hearing them in the 70s. Cool Love is a treat as well. Can’t help but note how I Want You Tonight sounds so 80s, even before the decade commenced! Good selection here, but you missed Don’t Wanna Live Without It.

One thing one easily notes listening to great music like this, particularly Love Will Find a Way, we don’t have this great guitar rock anymore. Vocals, great guitar solo. Songs like these as well as Cliff Richard’s Carrie (1979). This kind of music continued into the 80s, but today, it”s gone.

Pablo Cruise

Jerry Moss signed Pablo Cruise to A&M Records in 1975. The group would record seven albums over ten years for A&M.

Pablo Cruise's instrumentals were used in the CBS Sports Spectacular, NBC's Sports World, ABC's Wide World of Sports ("Zero to 60 in 5 Seconds") and Monday Night Football.

The band shared a bill with the Beach Boys and Steve Miller playing the first ever rock show at Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands. The group started touring in May and stayed on the road through August. In September the band started a tour on the west coast.

To support the A Place in the Sun album, A&M worked with radio stations on contests with prizes that ranged from Pablo Cruise beach towels to "place in the sun" vacations. The band toured and did television appearances to support the album.

Pablo Cruise was the first rock band to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.

The album Worlds Away shipped gold in June 1978. Also in June the band shot a promotional film of "Love Will Find a Way" and "Worlds Away" at the Oakland Paramount.

Pablo Cruise performed the song "Dreamer" which was included in the film of the same name. Their song "A Place in the Sun" was used in the motion picture "An Unmarried Woman."

The Part of the Game "is a slight departure from 'Worlds Away.' The music deals simply with the games we all play with one another, the games we're all used to and those we experience day by day. I think there is a lot more emotional content in this record," Cory Lerios told Billboard. David Jenkins added, "We looked at the things on all our minds, especially loving and losing and moving in and out of relationships."

In 1979, Pablo Cruise matched the attendance record in the main showroom at the Sahara-Tahoe that was set by Elvis Presley.

Hera asteroid mission's side-trip to Mars

ESA's Hera asteroid mission for planetary defense will make a swingby of Mars next March, borrowing speed to help reach its target Didymos binary asteroid system.

In the process the spacecraft will venture as near as 6,000 km from the surface of the Red Planet, closer than the orbits of the two martian moons. Its trajectory will be tweaked so that it can train its science instruments onto Mars's smaller moon Deimos from within 1,000 km away, while also observing Mars itself.

Details of the swingby are being presented at this week's Hera Science Community Workshop at ESA's ESTEC technical center in the Netherlands.

"This swingby is part of the scheduled maneuvers to get Hera to Didymos by the end of its two-year cruise phase," explains Michael Kueppers, ESA's Hera project scientist.

"By swinging through the gravitational field of Mars in its direction of movement the spacecraft gains added velocity for its onward journey. This close encounter is not part of Hera's core mission, but we will have several of our science instruments activated anyway. It gives us another chance to calibrate our instruments and potentially to make some scientific discoveries."

Flight Dynamics engineer Pablo Muñoz, part of the Mission Analysis team at ESA's European Space Operations Center in Germany, said, "It´s truly fortunate that Mars happens to be at the right location and at the right time to give Hera a hand. This enabled us to design a trajectory that uses the gravity of Mars to push Hera towards its rendezvous with Didymos, resulting in great fuel savings for the mission. Part of the excess propellant can then be spent in advancing the arrival at the binary asteroid by a few months, thus maximizing the mission's planetary defense and science return."

Hera is due for launch in October this year, headed for the mountain-sized Didymos asteroid and the Great-Pyramid-sized Dimorphos moonlet that orbits around it. On 26 September 2022 NASA's van-sized DART spacecraft impacted the Dimorphos asteroid at around 6.1 km/s. This first test of the 'kinetic impact' method of planetary defense succeeded in modifying the orbit of the target asteroid around its larger parent.

Next Hera will perform a close-up survey of Dimorphos, to gather crucial missing information on the asteroid's mass, makeup and structure that can turn DART's grand-scale experiment into a well-understood and potentially repeatable planetary defense technique.

"Hera's instruments have been designed to observe Dimorphos of course, but the potential is there to turn up interesting insights about the distinctively asteroid-like Deimos as well," notes Patrick Michel Director of Research at CNRS at Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur in Nice and Hera's Principal Investigator.

Orbiting 23,460 km from Mars, Deimos—its name deriving from the Greek for "Fear"—is the further and smaller of the two martian moons. The lumpy body has a diameter of 12.4 km across and has a dark surface reminiscent of C-type asteroids. One theory is that both Deimos and its fellow martian moon Phobos are in fact captured asteroids from the main Asteroid belt. Their surface characteristics have features in common with the planet below them however, conversely suggesting an impact-based origin.

"Deimos has not been observed before with Hera's combination of science instruments , so hope to make some discoveries," adds Patrick Michel. "We will also be observing in synergy with the Emirates Mars Mission 'Hope Probe,' which launched in July 2020 and entered orbit around Mars in February 2021. Co-observations with ESA's own Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter missions are also under consideration.

"Additionally, the imagery and data we gather will help with planning the Japanese-led Martian Moons eXploration mission, MMX, which is due to launch in 2026. MMX will survey both moons while also landing a small French-German rover on Phobos and acquiring samples to return to Earth."

Hera will employ three of its instruments during its swingby of Mars and Deimos. Its main Asteroid Framing Camera will gather visual imagery while its HyperScout-H instrument will observe in a range of colors beyond the limits of the human eye, gathering mineralogical data in a total of 25 visible and near-infrared spectral bands.

Finally its Thermal Infrared Imager is a heat mapper, able to make out features through local night-time and measure how surface temperatures change over time to help constrain surface properties.
