It is this jungle that is a haven for the vast majority of the state’s renowned wildlife, particularly one of the world’s most iconic mammals, the Royal Bengal Tiger. Our tried-and-tested tips for visiting Jim Corbett National Park will give you the best chance of spotting these elusive creatures.

Jim Corbett National Park

India has 75% of the world’s wild tiger population with 3,682 recorded in the latest survey. Uttarakhand is home to around 560 of the big cats and, as such, offers one of the best chances to see these majestic animals in the wild.

Jim Corbett National Park in the Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand is India’s oldest national park and its most legendary. It was established in 1936 initially as Hailey National Park and then Ramganga National Park until it was renamed in 1957 after famed tiger-hunter turned naturalist Jim Corbett, who put the region on the map with his 1944 book, Man-Eaters of Kumaon .

The Indian-born British soldier famously hunted several man-eating tigers and leopards in the subcontinent during the early 19th century. Later in his life, Corbett pivoted to conservationism and was instrumental in establishing India’s first national park which would later be renamed in his honour.

Around 260 tigers – up from 231 in 2020 – call the forests, marshes and grasslands of Jim Corbett home. There are also Indian elephants, mongoose, leopards, sloths, bears and deer here. While the woodland area is typically dense, there are swathes of open grassland and riverbeds where wildlife is easier to spot.

Tips for visiting Jim Corbett National Park

To help you with your visit, we’ve put together the following tips for visiting Jim Corbett National Park.

1. Do stay in the national park

Jim Corbett is one of the few tiger reserves in India that permits overnight stays within the park. To maximise time and increase your opportunities for spotting wildlife, particularly the park’s most elusive animal, the Bengal Tiger, we recommend staying in the park.

We stayed in Saraca Corbett , a five-star resort located in the heart of the national park. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Dhikala gate and 30 minutes from both Bijrani and Garjiya gates. Set amidst lush grounds, the hotel has a superb restaurant (which makes use of the on-site organic garden), a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and a cycling/walking trail that circles the property.

The hotel is dog-friendly and keeps several sociable pooches on-site. There are also horses roaming a paddock and the surrounding jungle has an abundance of bird life flitting around the canopy.

2. Do book multiple safaris

To give yourself the best chance of spotting wildlife, we advise booking at least three to four safaris spread throughout your stay (we recommend at least three nights/four days). Safaris depart twice a day: in the mornings (6am-10am) and the afternoons (2pm-6pm). Generally, wildlife is more active during early morning and late afternoon.

The park offers Jeep (up to six people) and canter (up to 16 people) safaris in five different zones which spread vehicles evenly throughout the park. However, you can book private vehicles (recommended) for an additional cost through your hotel.

3. But Don’t book back-to-back safaris

Wildlife watching is thrilling but also requires concentration and can be draining. As such, we don’t recommend booking multiple safaris on the same day as each drive lasts between four to five hours once you include the transfers to and from the gates.

Cramming multiple safaris into your stay can become exhausting and means you don’t get to enjoy some of the other activities on offer in the park (see below).

Instead, it’s best to book a mix of morning and afternoon safaris, alternating between time slots on different days. This will give you the best chance of seeing wildlife without taking the joy out of your drives.

4. Don’t go in the winter

The best time to spot tigers is during India’s early summer between March and June. During the hotter months, the foliage is not as dense and the tigers are drawn into the open in search of water, making them easier to spot.

During the winter months, it is harder to spot wildlife in the thicker woodland. This gets even harder immediately after the monsoon – which runs from July to September – when the vegetation is at its densest, meaning that the only likely way of spotting a tiger is if it comes out onto the road or visits a riverbed.

From November to February, mammal sightings are much harder but it is the ideal time for spotting migratory birds such as ibisbill, ruddy shelducks and storks.

5. But Do still wrap up warm

We were taken aback by just how cold the region was in the early morning and late afternoon. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise considering Jim Corbett is located in the foothills of the highest mountain range on Earth!

What’s more, the safari vehicles are open-sided and open-roofed so provide little shelter from the elements. As such, make sure you pack plenty of warm clothing including a beanie, neck buff, gloves and multiple layers to put on.

6. Do wear sunscreen

Despite the cold, expect the sun to be fierce at any time of year. While a considerable part of your day will be under the shade of the jungle canopy, you will also spend plenty of time in the exposed grasslands. Wear plenty of sunscreen – and ideally a sunhat.

7. Don’t forget mosquito repellent

During the colder months, mosquitos won’t be as much of a nuisance but during the summer, particularly around the waterholes, they can descend en masse.

Pack plenty of  DEET  and consider wearing long-sleeved tops to keep the critters at bay. By late morning, once the sun is out, they will mostly clear off for a few hours, only to return at dusk. This is the jungle after all.

8. Do visit several zones

Jim Corbett has eight zones which are fully operational from 15 November to 15 June, while some zones, such as Jhirna and Dhela, are open year-round. The best zones for sightings (in order) are Garjiya, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela and Durga Devi.

Durga Devi Zone is significantly hillier and steeper and is considered best for birdwatching while Dhikala Zone is known for its extensive grasslands that attract deer, bears and tigers. However, Dhikala is only accessible via 16-seater canters. If you want to drive it by Jeep, you must book a night at a lodge inside the Dhikala zone.

9. Don’t forget about the other wildlife

It’s easy to get hung up on seeing tigers. However, it’s also worth remembering that tigers are elusive for good reason. They will typically travel 10 to 20 kilometres during a night’s hunting while, during the day, their stripes act as camouflage, allowing them to blend in with their surroundings so they can stalk and ambush their prey.

You should, instead, approach your visit knowing that no matter how many game drives you go on, you may not spot any tigers. As such, try to make the most of the other wildlife on offer. Jim Corbett is home to over 600 bird species and 50 mammal species including elephants, langur monkeys, leopards, sloth bears, spotted and barking deer and gharials (fish-eating crocodiles). All of them are worth your attention.

10. Do make use of toilet stops

Once through the gates, toilet stops are a rarity. Zones usually have a ranger station where toilets may be available and some of the zones have lookout towers or lodgings with restrooms. But none of these can be relied on.

We recommend making use of the washrooms at the entrance gates just in case. There’s no nipping off into the bush!

11. Don’t leave any litter in the park

On the whole, the park is reasonably trash-free, particularly compared to other parts of India. That said, we did see some plastic bags and other bits of litter in spots away from built-up areas that could only have been dropped by visitors.

The consumption of food is prohibited so do not eat in the park. Remember that the vehicles are open-sided and open-roofed so it’s easy for litter to blow away. It’s also prohibited to leave your vehicle so there’s no chance to retrieve anything you drop. The best way to avoid dropping litter is to not take anything into the park.

12. Do try other activities

Besides game drives, Jim Corbett has other activities including hiking, rock climbing and rafting, depending on the time of year. There are cultural walks of local villages and mountain drives available. The Jim Corbett Museum, located in the former house of the hunter-cum-naturalist at Kaladhungi, is also worth a visit.

How to get to Jim Corbett

The nearest town to Jim Corbett National Park is around 260km from New Delhi, the capital of India. The main gateway town is Ramnagar, about 12km from the park.

There are daily overnight trains running from New Delhi to Ramnagar which take 10-11 hours each way. You can book online, but you’ll need to create an account on Indian Railways which is rather convoluted. It’s worth reading Seat 61’s guide first.

The most convenient way of reaching Jim Corbett National Park is by road from New Delhi, which takes around six hours. The best way to organise transfers and trains is in advance through your accommodation. However, if they don’t have a travel desk then we recommend using Viator but make sure you contact the booking agent to confirm your pick-up time and location well in advance.

How To Reach Jim Corbett?

Types of Safaris in Corbett

Canter Safari

Conducted and operated only by the forest officials, canter safaris are yet another exciting way to delve deep into the wilderness of Jim Corbett Park! Operated twice in a day, usually open-roof canters with a seating capacity of 16-18 members are used for this purpose.

For a larger group of visitors, canter safaris are the most ideal ways to enjoy wildlife safaris. Also, as the vehicles assures maximum safety to the passengers, visitors of almost all age groups can enjoy these rides; however, minors must be accompanied with an adult during the safaris.

The safaris usually lasts for around 5 hours and takes the passengers to some of the most popular sites for wildlife spotting and as the vehicles are open, they promises you the most fascinating experience of the wild! Also, since only 4 canters are allowed at a time, it is advisable to book the safari well in advance.

Summer: As summers offer much clear views, the first batch of safari starts at around 05:30 in the morning and continues till 12:30 in the noon. Post this, the second batch starts at around 12:20 in the noon and winds up by 06:30 in the evening. Winters: Safaris during the winters start by around 06:00 in the morning and closes down by around 11:00. The last batch of canter is allowed into the forests between 11:00AM to 04:00PM only.

Zones:  Among all the four buffer zones, only Dhikala Zone is open for canter safaris.

NOTE:  Since the safaris are carried out in eco-friendly zone, visitors should carry a disposable bag to carry back their leftovers and leave no trace within the park. Also, alcohol and non-vegetarian foods are strictly not allowed during the safaris.

Jeep Safari

Types of Flora and Fauna in Jim Corbett

Fringed with the gurgling Ramganga River, numerous ridges and plateaus, the park serves as an ideal abode to a kaleidoscopic range of flora and fauna. While the abundance of water bodies and the favourable climatic conditions supports the growth and nurture of different types of flora species, it finally results in all the required conditions for the significant wildlife population of the park.

The list of flora within the park starts from non-flowering plants like ferns, lichens, mosses and continues with different types of flowering plants including the exotic orchids, dodder, scarlet red flowers and several others. The park also has a significant number of woody climbers like melletia auriculata, crypotepris buchanani, porana paniculata and others. Among the types of grass and herbs, you can find kansi, baib, tiger grass, khus khus, cyanthia, drymaria diandra, bhilmora, euphorbia hirta, clover and others alike.

Different types of shrubs and bamboo plants can also be found in large number within the park. On the other hand, chir pine, date palm, kanju, jamun, aamla, banj oak, semal, maddar, kanchnaar and dhak are some of the commonly found tree species within the park.

Talking about the fauna of the Jim Corbett National Park, predators like the Bengal Tiger, leopard, jungle cat, fishing cat and leopard cat mainly comprises the list. Other dominant inhabitants of the park include Indian Elephant, buffalo and Himalayan Black Bear. The park also has a significant population of avifauna. Till now, a total of 586 different species has been recorded within the park. This includes birds like parakeet, crested serpent eagle, bee-eaters, tawny fish owl, red jungle fowl and several other migratory and local birds.

A large number of Indian python, crocodile and gharial along with wide range of reptiles, amphibians and fishes can also be found within the park.

If you are coming from Delhi, you can board any trains between Delhi and Ramnagar; headquarter of Jim Corbett Park. From Ramnagar, you can easily reach the park by hiring a taxi. Trains to Ramnagar are also available from other cities like Lucknow, Varanasi and Allahabad; all these trains travel through Kanpur.

Ramnagar is well connected by roads to cities like Delhi, Haridwar, Bareily, Nainital, Ranikhet, and Dehradun, via the route to Gajraula, Moradabad and Kashipur. You can also visit Ramnagar from other places like Haldwani, Kashipur and Kathgodam.

Jim Corbett National Park is one of the most popular national parks of India. Particularly for tiger spotting. It is located in the Uttarakhand state of India. Actually, Jim Corbett National Park is very centrally located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand near the town of Ramgarh. Almost at a 2 hours driving distance from many other famous tourist places of Uttarakhand. Including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Nainital, Almora, Ranikhet and Bhimtal. And very well connected with all these cities.

Dhikala Zone

Bijrani Zone

Next to Dhikala in popularity, second highest changes of tiger sighting in Jim Corbett National Park are in Bijrani Zone.

The Dhela zone is considered one of the favourite zones for the tigers for hunting because it has good population of Sambar deer. The “Chaurs” or grassland of Dhela Zone are often populated with herds of deers and elephants – something to feast your eyes on.

Jhirna Zone

Located on the southern edge of Jim Corbett National Park, Jhirna Zone offers night stay in forest guest house inside the forest itself. And has been popular for both tiger and bear sightings.

Durga Devi Zone

Unlike most other zones of Jim Corbett National Park, the Durgadevi zone is located on the hills. Thus it provides spectacular views of the surroundings. Sitabani buffer zone

Since this is a buffer zone and is more easily accessible. So, 1 hour safari is available in the Sitabani Zone. If you are short of time, you can do this safari. Or, even take an elephant ride in this zone. However, chances of seeing tiger are bleak in the buffer zone when compared to the core zones.

Garjia Zone

A recent addition to the safari zones of Jim Corbett National Park, Garjia Zone has a rich population of Bengal Tigers. And is located at a mere 9km from Ramgarh. It also has a forest rest house for overnight stay inside the forest.

Phato Zone is another zone popular for tiger spotting in Jim Corbett National Park. It has 50 jeeps available for safari in the morning as well as evening. And it is located around 26km from Ramnagar.

Pakhro Zone

Located around 20km from Kothdwar, Pakhro Zone is a new zone to Jim Corbett National Park. And is gaining popularity fast. Because it has rich flora as well as many animal sighting chances including tigers, leopards, many varieties of deer, bear and elephants. And also a lot many species of birds.

Useful tips for safari in Jim Corbett National Park

There are some things one must keep in mind while having safari in Jim Corbett National Park. Or, for that matter, any national park.

• Don’t make noise as it agitates the animals. Or, they might get over cautious and hide out of sight.
• Wear neutral color cloths that helps you blend with the surroundings. If it is difficult to spot you, the animals will have their guards down. And chances of spotting them increases.
• Don’t get down your vehicle . Remain seated in your vehicle in all conditions, maintain your calm in all situations, even if an animal comes too close or jumps on your vehicle 🙂
• Always go for safari with authorised vehicles which has trained driver and guide accompanying it.
• It’s not advisable to take very little kids (< 4 years old) on jungle safari. As the roads are very bumpy and almost non-existent. Which can be a very rough experience for them and cause stomach upset, motion sickness etc.
• If you are very prone to motion sickness and like to avoid bumpy rides then don’t plan for the core zones of safari inside the jungle.
• Stay at least for two nights where you want to take safari. As the safaris generally happen early in the morning or later in the afternoon. And span around 3 hours or more. So, the best itinerary will be to reach your destination on day 1. Relax and rest. Then take an early morning safari on day 2. The chances of spotting animals is highest in morning time. After coming back from safari you can rest for the day and catchup on your sleep. And then checkout on day 3.
• Private vehicles are not allowed inside Jim Corbett National Park.

How to reach Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is well connected by road from all the major cities like New Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and also to nearby tourist places like Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Nainital, Almora, Ranikhet and Bhimtal etc. You can take a bus to Ramnagar or even to Jim Corbett National Park from these places. And you can also take a private taxi or drive yourself. A road trip from New Delhi to Jim Corbett National Park takes around 4.5 hrs. From Ranikhet or Nainital or Rishikesh to Jim Corbett National Park takes only around 2.5 hrs.

Ramgarh is the nearest railway station some 12 km from Jim Corbett National Park. From here, you can get taxi for Jim Corbett National Park.

The nearest airports are New Delhi and Dehradun.

What is the best time to visit Jim Corbett National Park

Except monsoon season, you can visit Jim Corbett National Park anytime of the year.

Summers are harsh. The temperature starts rising from the middle of March, and by April end or May, it even crosses 40 degree C. If you can bear the heat, summers make for a good time to spot the animals. As they tend to come out of their habitat more often, particularly to the bank of river and other water sources for water.

Winter season from November to Mid March makes for pleasant climate to explore Jim Corbett National Park.

From June to October, the core zones of Jim Corbett National Park remain closed for safari. So, plan your trip accordingly if you are visiting Jim Corbett National Park for safari. We visited here towards the last week of October. However, after gathering all the information, we decided to opt out of safari. Because, one, we were staying in Jim Corbett National Park for only one night. Which means it would be really hectic for us to take the safari. And number two, the core zones were not yet open which means chances of tiger spotting were bleak. We had a wonderful tiger safari experience in Bandhavgarh National Park on our MP road trip and were still content with it. So, we decided to give it a pass this time. And instead, enjoy a staycation in Jim Corbett National Park .

Where to stay in Jim Corbett National Park

From Government guest houses to luxury resort, Jim Corbett National Park has several stay options for all travellers. Some of them are located right on the highway while for some others, you might have to take a little detour and drive a little inside. Some resorts and properties are located right besides the Kosi river, with private access to the river banks. Depending on what is your prime goal for visiting Jim Corbett National Park, you can book an accommodation accordingly.

• If you are going for a safari, book a stay near to your zone of safari which will help you with reaching the safari point without much hassle.
• Otherwise, if you want to enjoy a staycation, book a resort near the river bank or one inside the jungle surrounded by greenery so that you can enjoy your staycation in the nature to its best.

We stayed at Tarangi Resort Jim Corbett and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. This property had river access, nice campus with lots of activities arranged for the day, nice food and spacious rooms. There is a safari starting point right outside the property entrance.

Wildlife Holidays – Jim Corbett National Park

When I think of wildlife holidays in the Northern part of India, the place that comes to my mind immediately is Jim Corbett, especially as it is close to the Himalayas. It is nestled in between Himalayas and Shivaliks in the state of Uttarakhand.

Though the state is famous for Garhwal, Kumaon , holy pilgrim sites like Badrinath, Kedarnath which are located amidst beautiful backdrops of Himalayas, it comes as no surprise when the first National Park (protected areas) of our country is set up here, Jim Corbett National Park in Nainital district.

As we navigate the tough terrain of Corbett in a jeep with bumpy rides for several hours searching for animals, we find our soul in this journey, and maybe you will leave a part of it there, like me.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

History of Corbett National Park

The park was named after Jim Corbett, a famous British hunter who turned into a conservationist towards the later part of his life. He convinced the then British Raj to convert it into a National Park to protect mainly Bengal Tigers.

One of the top ten national parks in India (area-wise), Corbett, covering an area of 1300 sq.km. was established in 1936. As a remembrance to him, a statue of Jim Corbett is unveiled at the park entrance.

Altitudes inside the forest vary between 400 m to 1200 m, and the landscape is a wonderful mix of open grasslands interspersed between dense vegetation predominantly by Sal and Peepal Trees, lakes, hills, marshes, Ramganga river flowing like forest veins.

Close to 600 species of birds (including residents and migrants) and 500 species of plants and trees call Jim Corbett their home. A vast area of the park makes it easier for the animals to become elusive.

Though there are plenty of Bengal Tigers, good tracking is needed to spot them. During summer months, we can see one of the largest congregation of elephants too. Each herd might have more than a few hundred elephants at times.

Other animals such as Leopards, deer, otters, mongoose, yellow-throated martens, Himalayan Black Bear are also found here.

Zones of Jim Corbett National Park

Ecotourism is allowed only in designated zones inside the park. Many of the core zones remain closed during monsoon season due to heavy rainfall. Ramnagar is the closest city, and we need to hire gypsy vehicles (jeeps) for a safari inside the forest.

Bijrani Zone

It is the closest entry from Ramnagar. As we move past the gate, soon noise from the city fades away. Numerous birds you can spot on the way to the forest rest house, an erstwhile hunting complex now converted to accommodate visitors.

Bijrani is an absolute wilderness, especially when night falls as there is no electricity here (be sure to charge your camera batteries). We are provided only with solar lamps. There is no mobile connectivity, too, which makes it the perfect retreat for a digital detox. Landscape in Bijrani is a mix of river plains and open grasslands.

Elephant ride is available from this zone, which you can book on a first-come, first-serve basis. When we visited, “Sharmili,” the tiger crossed right in front of our jeep. It is an experience that would not fade away from our memory soon. They provide food in the canteen for an additional cost. A minimum of 4 safaris (2 days) is needed to cover the area.

Dhikala Zone

Arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the forests, entry from gate to forest rest house takes about an hour or so which passes through dense Sal forests. As we wait patiently in our jeep with only the sound of the wind blowing or an occasional rustling of leaves, our mind becomes calm and embraces silence.

Tallgrass sways gently in the wind and reveals spotted deer or endangered Hog deer foraging for food. It makes us realize the full fast city life we are leading and what nature has to offer. On a late evening, we were lucky to witness a herd of elephants cross the river near Sambhar road along with their little ones.

We watched them engage in a mock fight, smaller elephants pampered by others and big tuskers scattered here and there.

The sunrise view from the reservoir located at one end of the zone is worth sacrificing our sleep. “Parvaali” is another famous tiger in this part of the jungle, and she is often very bold in front of the gypsy vehicles.

A minimum of 4 safaris (2 days) is needed to do proper justice. Dhikala forest house has various types of accommodation, which you can check here. It has patches of mobile connectivity for Airtel and BSNL. Buffet food provided is very good. There is also another small canteen that provides food for a cheaper rate (less tasty).

Durgadevi Zone

The Hilly zone of Durgadevi is a paradise for bird watchers. Varying altitudes, along with dense tree cover, provides an excellent opportunity to spot birds. Safari vehicles take you a little further after Domunda bridge, where we can spot the famous Mahseer fish. Plan to book one or two safaris in this zone.

Jhirna Zone

Although this zone is open throughout the year, weather and other conditions might make the forest department to close the entry, especially during monsoons.

How to Reach Jim Corbett

The nearest city to Jim Corbett is Ramnagar which is around 260 km from New Delhi. It is well known for the cultivation and export of Litchi and mango fruits. We recommend going via Delhi since it is cost-effective.

• By Air – Dehradun is the nearest major airport (around 220 km). You can hire a taxi from Dehradun to Ramnagar. If you are willing to shift trains, you can catch a train to Ramnagar from Moradabad (MD). Moradabad is well connected by trains to Dehradun. You can also fly till New Delhi and then take a train or bus (check details below).
• By Train – There are trains connecting Ramnagar (RMR) to major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta and tourist places like Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Agra, and Haridwar. Railway station and bus stand in Ramnagar are close by and it doesn’t take much time to travel between the two.
• By Bus – Buses ply from New Delhi to Ramnagar on a regular basis. Please click here for Uttarakhand state Government bus online booking online or schedule for Ramnagar from Delhi Anand Vihar.

How to get Jim Corbett safari permit

You can book safaris inside Jim Corbett national park can be booked for Day visits (no stay inside) and accommodation in any of the forest houses.

Safari usually begins around 5:30 am to 6 am in the mornings and around 2 pm to 3 pm in the evenings (depending on the season and zones. The duration of each safari is around 4 hours.

Accommodation can be booked 45 days in advance. Booking for a day visit is a permit to enter the particular zone. For Dhikala alone, staying in the forest rest house is mandatory for going on a jeep safari.

But there is a canter ride that can be booked 30 days in advance (limited to 16 seats). One needs to note that except the Dhikala zone, safaris you can do by only booking day visits and staying at resorts/hotels outside the park.

However, we do not recommend this as you will lose a lot of time traveling from the gate to the core areas. A naturalist must accompany each vehicle, and a maximum of 6 people can be accommodated in a jeep (excluding driver and naturalist). Naturalists help in identifying and spotting animals or birds.

Day visit cost does not include vehicle/gypsy or naturalist/guide charges. There are multiple expenses associated with tariff and it varies between zones. You can click on this link to calculate your day visit charges. A handy PDF on tariff here.

The vehicle/Jeep charges per safari (4 hours) for various zones for a day visit and night stays are (as per 2017-18). You can refer to the list of Govt approved gypsy vehicles and their phone numbers.

Points to note about the Park

• A permit is required to enter the forest.
• Canceling or rescheduling the permit is not allowed after booking.
• Entry is restricted only to the zone for which permit is obtained.
• Walking or trekking inside the forest is prohibited except for a few places.
• Private vehicles are not allowed inside. We need to hire Gypsy from registered vehicles.
• Proof of identification (PAN card, Voter ID, etc) has to be shown at the entry of each zone.
• Canteen food is available only at Dhikala, Bhijrani zones. For other zones, the kitchen is provided where we can cook food.
• Avoid littering inside and do not shout/be noisy when spotting animals

What is the best time to visit Jim Corbett?

Every season has its charms. Summer months are when the forest is dry, and there are high chances of spotting a tiger. It is also during April, and May elephants migrate to Jim Corbett, and you can watch huge herds of elephants everywhere.

During winter (late Nov – Jan), spotting a tiger may not be that easy. However, it is the time when the forest is at its best. Early morning mists and safaris on cold mornings are an experience of a lifetime. Imagine a tiger emerging from the fog and crossing the mud road!

Monsoon times are best avoided (June) and the park is closed during this period. Also, each zone opens and closes at different dates. Safari timing differs too across months depending on sunlight. We have summarized various zones and its open period here.

Accommodation in Jim Corbett

Although forest rest houses are the ones that are easily suited for safari purposes, there are many hotels and resorts in the periphery of the park. Some are budget-friendly and some luxury.

• Corbett Motel is a budget accommodation located on a mango farm. Good value for money in the range of 1500 INR – 2000 INR per day. The food here is very good. The hotel owner Mr. Ranjith can also help you arrange/book your safaris and jeeps. You can reach them at 05947-253033.
• Tiger House Corbett is another mid-range hotel located a little further from Ramnagar. You can check their website for details.
• Corbett Mango Bloom is a mid-range resort in the range of 4000 INR – 5000 INR per day. Please check their website for more details.

Ecotourism is important to save our forests. Money received from these tourism efforts directly benefit the local people. They are employed as drivers, naturalists, caretakers of forest rest houses.

Jim Corbett national park is an ecotourism destination that is very popular with tourists as it houses more than 488 different species and subspecies of flora and fauna. Dense moist deciduous forest mainly consisting of sal, haldu, peepal, rohini and mango trees. Forest covers almost 73% of the park, 10% of the area consists of grasslands. It houses around 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species and 25 reptile species.

History of Jim Corbett national park :

The area of Jim Corbett national park were already a huge forest. The decline of the forest saw the death of many species of flora and fauna. Efforts to save the forest were started by in the 19th century by Major Ramsay, the British officer who was in-charge of that area. In the early 1900s, several Britishers, including E. R. Stevans and E. A. Smythies, suggested the setting up of a national park on this soil.

It was only in 1930, that the British government took the help of Jim Corbett, who used his influence to establish the park. A reserve area by the name of Hailey national park was created, marking the first ever national park in Asia. The reserve was later renamed to Jim Corbett national park to honor his contributions in the creation of the park.

It was chosen as the headquarters for launching the drive called as Project Tiger, a drive to save the endangered Bengal tiger. Since then the numbers of Bengal Tigers have improved. Corbett National Park is one of the thirteen protected areas covered by the World Wide Fund For Nature under their Terai Arc Landscape Program. The reserve is administered from its headquarters in the district of Nainital.

Geography of Jim Corbett national park :

The altitude of the region ranges between 360 meters and 1,040 meters. It has numerous ravines, ridges, minor streams and small plateaus with varying aspects and degrees of slope. The park encompasses the Patli Dun valley formed by the Ramganga river. It protects parts of the Upper Gangetic Plains moist deciduous forests and Himalayan subtropical pine forests ecoregions. It has a humid subtropical and highland climate.

The present area of the reserve is 1,318.54 square kilometres including 520 square kilometres of core area and 797.72 square kilometres of buffer area. The core area forms the Jim Corbett National Park while the buffer contains reserve forests (496.54 square kilometres) as well as the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary (301.18 square kilometres).The reserve, located partly along a valley between the Lesser Himalaya in the north and the Shivaliks in the south, has a sub-Himalayan belt structure.

Climate in Jim Corbett national park :

Jim Corbett national park closes from mid-June to mid-September as the rainy season is also the mating season for most of the animals. Summer season starts from March and lasts till June. The temperature reaches a maximum of 40 degrees and the recorded minimum was 30 degrees. The scorching heat of the summer season makes its unbearable for the animals as well as the inhabitants.

The ideal season to visit Jim Corbett national park is after rainy season before the summer season. The best months to plan your visit to Jim Corbett national park is from December to February. The temperature reaches a pleasant maximum of 20 degrees and a cold minimum of 5 degrees during these months. It is easier to spot animals in the winter season.

How to reach Jim Corbett national park :

The closest airport to Jim Corbett national park is the Pantnagar airport. It is located at a distance of 50 kilometers away from Jim Corbett national park and one can hail a taxi to reach Jim Corbett national park from the airport. This airport is well-serviced by Air India flights.

Jim Corbett national park is located at a distance of 290 kilometers from the national capital Delhi. It takes about 5 hours to reach Jim Corbett national park from Delhi. An extensive system of roads also ensure connectivity to Nainital, Haridwar and Dehradun. Volvo and regular buses offer transfers to Jim Corbett national park from these cities. One can also drive down to Jim Corbett national park on their own vehicle.

The nearest railway station to Jim Corbett national park is the Kotdwar railway station. Trains come in frequently to Kotdwar railway station from Delhi and the other cities of Uttarakhand. One can hail a taxi to reach Jim Corbett national park from Kotdwar railway station.

Established by an India-born British-Irish hunter and naturalist, Edward James Corbett in 1936 as Hailey National Park to protect the endangered Bengal tiger, Jim Corbett National Park brags for being the oldest national park in Asia.

It was renamed Ramganga National Park (named after the river flowing through Corbett National Park) just after Independence and eventually Jim Corbett National Park in 1955 to honor Sir Jim Corbett.

In 1974, Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary was picked out as a location for launching the Project Tiger initiative, a well-known wildlife conservation project.

Later, the Kalagarh forest division including Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary was added to the reserve area. Today, Jim Corbett is one of the 13 protected areas covered by the World Wildlife Fund under the Terai Arc Landscape Programme (TAL).

Location of Jim Corbett National Park

Beautifully placed on the foothills of the Himalayas, Jim Corbett is located in Nainital (Pauri Garhwal) District in Uttarakhand state in Northern India .

Ramnagar, being the nearest town, is best known as the gateway to the Corbett Tiger Reserve.

How to Reach Jim Corbett

Ramnagar is the nearest town to Jim Corbett. Jim Corbett National Park is about 272 km from Delhi and takes around 6 hours to reach.

Ramnagar can be easily reached by rail and road from New Delhi. If you’re coming by your own car, it’s a smooth drive to Corbett via NH9 from Delhi. If driving isn’t your thing, you can board the UPSRTC bus from Delhi or catch the Ranikhet Express Train from New Delhi Railway Station to Ramnagar Railway Station.

Thereafter, you can hire a local taxi or cab from the railway station or bus stand to your resort. PS: Owing to its proximity to Delhi, Jim Corbett is easy to explore as a weekend trip from Delhi.

Safari Zones in Jim Corbett

To streamline the tourism activities inside the tiger reserve area, Corbett National Park is divided into six ecotourism zones: 1. Dhikala 2. Bijrani 3. Jhirna 4. Dhela 5. Durga Devi 6. Sonanadi One of the finest zones in Jim Corbett, Dhikala is only open to tourists who stay in a forest rest house inside the zone. Dhikala offers a canter safari and elephant safari for its residents.

The zone is famous for its breathtaking landscape consisting of dense Sal forest, lush grassland, narrow valley, and diverse waterways of the River Ramganga.

Considered the second-best after Dhikala, the Bijrani zone is, in fact, no less than Dhikala.

One of the most tiger-rich areas, the zone presents beautiful Sal forests and large grasslands. Bijrani offers both jeep safari and elephant safari.

Jhirna zone was added to Corbett Tiger Reserve in 1994.

The zone offers jeep safari only. Deciduous forests interspersed with lush open grasslands define this zone’s topography.

Garjia Zone can be accessed from Amdanda Gate. With a topography consisting of sal forests and grasslands, Garjia is a tiger-rich zone.

The grassland (chaurs) near Garjia Zone viz. Machaan Chaur, Badhai Chaur, and Ringora Chaur add to the beauty of the forest reserve. The newest of all zones, Dhela was included in Corbett Tiger Reserve in 2014. The zone has rich flora including Sal, Rohini, Haldu, Bahera, and Kusum forests, and fauna including tigers, leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and a large species of birds.

A hill safari zone, Durga Devi is famous for the rich population of wild elephants and otters near Domunda Bridge. Ramganga and Mandal Rivers add an extra touch of beauty to the landscape of Durga Devi. You can spot Mahsheer fish in this zone’s rivers. 

Carved out of Kalagarh Forest Division, Pakhro was added to Corbett Tiger Reserve in 1991 under the Project Tiger and Project Elephant initiatives.

Located in the north of the Pakhro River, the Pakhro zone is known for dense sal and rich bamboo forests, amazing wildlife (Asiatic elephants, tigers, leopards, sambar, cheetal, and reptiles) as well as intriguing species of birds.

The zones can be accessed through  Durgadevi Gate, Kalagarh Gate, and Vatanvasa Gate.

Reached through Durgadevi Gate, Kalagarh Gate, and Vatanvasa Gate, Sonanadi Zone is located north of Sonanadi River and is blessed with amazing nature and wildlife.

Sitabani Forest Zone is a buffer zone located outside of the Corbett Tiger Reserve area. The zone is famous for its dense forest, glassy rivers and streams, and ancient temples. Being a buffer zone, it’s less likely to spot tigers or leopards here.

You can definitely spot elephants, sambar deer, and Nilgai. With about 600 species on burds, Sitabani is a haven for bird watchers.

The best part about this zone is that apart from jeep safari and elephant safari, you can explore this zone by walking and even by your own car.

Best Time to Visit Jim Corbett

Corbett National Park is a delight no matter what the season. Each season has its own charms and quirks. Winter and Spring (mid-November to mid-June) are the best seasons to visit Corbett.

It’s when all the zones are open to the public, the weather is pleasant, and safaris are enjoyable at Jim Corbett. The park remains partly closed during the monsoon season (July to September). Only Jhirna and Dhela zones and Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary are open during monsoon.

Safari at Jim Corbett

The Jim Corbett jeep safari tours and canter safari tours are allowed in two shifts (morning and evening) in each zone with a limited number of jeeps in each shift. A safari jeep can carry a maximum of 6 adults and 2 children excluding the driver and guide. Elephant ride is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. A canter (open bus) has 16 seats and you need to book your seat well in advance. Book your canter safari seat the same day you book your stay in Dhikala Forest rest house.

How to Get Jim Corbett Safari Permit and Manage Jim Corbett Bookings

To get entry inside Corbett Tiger Reserve for Jim Corbett National Park safari, you need to get a day safari permit that can be obtained at the entry gate of the respective zone.

If you are planning to stay in one of the Forest Rest Houses inside different zones, the permit is issued at the Corbett Reserve Park’s office in Ramnagar.

You can also pre-book the day safari or FRH accommodation online here . You need to register yourself before you proceed with safari bookings or accommodation bookings. Be informed that the amount is non-refundable and non-transferable. Whether booked online or onsite, you need to show a photo ID proof (driver’s license/voter ID/PAN card/Aadhar card) and give the complete details of the person (gender, full name, birth date, etc.).

Foreign nationals need to show their passports.

Meandering Through Whispering Forests And Winding Paths: Our Experience at Corbett Park

It was our second visit to Jim Corbett National Park. We, often, make trips into the wilderness (Jim Corbett is easier to plan from Delhi), wishing to relax and rejuvenate away from the maddening crowd and never-ending to-do list.

My daughter was excited as she loves to see animals roaming freely in the jungle rather than in cages in a zoo. She couldn’t stop gushing about it. My expectations for the trip were simple.

A few days of fun with the family, pampering my body and soul, grabbing the moments of peace which are hard to find in the city, sitting on the boulders of Kosi river enjoying the sound of the water and view of the mountains….and….possibly sighting a tiger during the jungle safari. Our trip was as always planned at the eleventh hour, so we couldn’t book Dhikala Forest Lodge which is preferable because it’s a most-sought-after zone where one gets a chance to see wildlife up close while staying deep inside the forest that translates to higher chances of seeing tigers.

And one can’t go on a safari in Dhikala while staying outside of the zone.

We booked our stay at Jim’s Jungle Retreat (because of its jungle-like ambiance) and it was a good decision.

One has to drive through the lush forest to reach here and some people have claimed tiger sightings on the way to the resort. The evening nature walks through the forest along the Kosi River escorted by an info

We spent a leisurely time in the pool and enjoyed the beautiful documentary of Jim Corbett on a huge screen showcasing the importance of saving tigers in the evening. It was a great learning session.

The next day, early in the morning; we started our Elephant Safari and the mini-me kept talking to the mahout (driver of the elephant) all the time asking about the jungle, elephants, and other animals.

Though we didn’t spot any tigers; the ride was thrilling. Most importantly, my daughter was overjoyed. 

After a hearty lunch at the resort; it was time for the jeep safari which was pre-booked for us. As soon as the jeep safari started; my daughter too started asking numerous questions.

Our safari mates were trying to satisfy her inquisitive mind. She was confused as to why we people come to the jungle and intrude in their living space or abode.

She asked me if it is okay to encroach on someone’s home without invitation or permission. We all were mute. Our driver explained to her that we would not do anything wrong to the animals and we were here to just see them in their natural surroundings without harming them.

She just shrugged her shoulders but it was certainly a contemplative discussion. We as adults definitely need to think about our contrasting principles before we tell our kids to do the right thing.

We teach lessons to our kids and sometimes forget to follow those lessons ourselves.

We didn’t spot the tiger the first time and I always believed that there’s always the next time. And this was the next time 🙂

We saw a majestic tiger crossing the road just before our jeep. We were exhilarated. As if our trip was a success.

The tiger is, undoubtedly, extraordinary and rare but pursuing the tiger can make you lose out on other lovely and exquisite boons (exotic birds, beautiful flowers, rare trees, and other animals) the forests possess.

Don’t rush past all the beauty! The rest is luck!

The trip was as awesome as I thought it to be. And it was an eye-opener too.

Things to do in Jim Corbett

A visit to the Jim Corbett is incomplete without  Safari in Corbett . Elephant Safari, Canter Safari, and Jeep Safari are offered inside the national park. Elephant Safari is a fun activity for kids though the chances of seeing tigers are dim here.

Jeep Safaris are your best bet if tiger sighting is your goal as they take you to the otherwise inaccessible areas and zones of the reserve.

Apart from incredible wildlife – trekking, mountain biking, rock climbing, bird-watching, nature walking, river crossing, fishing, rappelling, river rafting, and a lot more adventure activities await you at Jim Corbett. Trekking is best enjoyed in Sitabani.

Places to Visit around Jim Corbett

Just about a 45-minute drive from Corbett, Corbett Museum in Kaladhungi is worth a visit, especially with kids. The ex-abode of Jim Corbett, a legendary hunter, the museum now showcases his chattels as well as fascinating information about Jim Corbett’s flora and fauna.

It’s the best place to know some of the interesting facts about Jim Corbett National Park. Trivia: Jim Corbett wrote many books with Man-Eaters of Kumaon being the most successful which was adapted into a Hollywood Movie, Man-Eater of Kumaon. A short hike (about 2 km) from Nainital Road takes you to a small, scenic waterfall nestled in woods, Corbett Falls. You can stop by the falls on the way to Corbett Museum.

Garjiya Temple by the River Kosi is another gem here. It houses a statue of Vishnu made of unique and rare stone that dates back to the 9th century.

Legend has it that if you visit the temple on Kartik Poornima, your wishes come true.

Nainital is just about 65 km from Jim Corbett and can be added to the itinerary if you’ve extra days on hand.

Travel Tips for Jim Corbett

• Book accommodation and jeep/canter safari way way ahead of time. Can’t stress this enough.
• For a pure wilderness experience, book a night stay in Dhikala Forest Lodge but as I said earlier that should be done at least 45 days before your visit. The accommodation and food facilities are basic in the lodge.
• Spend at least three nights in Jim Corbett to enjoy the wildlife as well as nature in leisure.
• Book at least two safari tours (preferably in different zones) to maximize your chances of tiger sighting. Dhikala, Bijrani, and Dhela are considered the best zones for tiger sightings.
• If you’re booking two safari tours, make it a point to choose a one-morning safari tour (because of inspiring sunrises) and one evening (because of gorgeous sunsets) tour.
• Pack according to the weather. During the summer months, pack light and breathable cotton t-shirts, shorts, and scarves. Don’t forget to carry a cap or hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. During the winter months, pack warm woolen clothes, hand gloves or mittens, a wool cap, and a muffler. Dress in layers. Whatever the season, it’s advisable to wear light-colored and earthy clothes that gel well with nature.

One of the oldest tiger reserve in India. However, didn’t get to see the tiger but had a great experience of traveling in jungle safari on a keep. Our guide was pretty great, enjoyed the refreshments that we ate in the middle of jungle. It was raining at that time, which kinda added to the experience.

Absolutely, its truly an experience visiting Jim Corbett and taking a safari. It’s sheer luck to spot a tiger. We were not able to spot during our first visit. Better luck next time. And there are many more National parks in India where you can spot tigers.

How to Visit Jim Corbett National Park: Planning a Safari That Doesn’t Suck

I felt cheated. Here I was surrounded by tigers, elephants, bears, and more…but the loud clanking motor of the canter safari kept all nearby animals safely concealed in the thick jungle. Not only was this a poor safari experience for me— it can’t be good for the animals. Having shelled out $200 for this little adventure, I had much higher hopes for the ethics and overall feel of the tiger safari. But there is a way to spot wild tigers in Jim Corbett ethically. 

India has more than 3,200 wild tigers lurking in its national parks. This is more than 75% of the world’s wild tiger population. But not all of India’s tiger safaris are created equal. And since this attraction tops most travelers’ India bucketlist — it’s important to find a way to do it ethically. If you want to plan a tiger safari that doesn’t suck in Jim Corbett National Park here are my tips for an ethical & enjoyable experience.

Your Guide to Jim Corbett National Park

Fun fact: Jim Corbett was an Indian-born Brit who was most well-known as a master tiger hunter. Not exactly what we would call conservation today. But back in the early 1900s Jim Corbett tracked man-eating tigers expertly and protected the small villages of Uttar Pradesh. Despite his dubious conservation techniques (at the time there were MANY more tigers in Indian jungles), he was responsible for establishing India’s very first national park (this one) to protect the unique species inside it. 

Is Jim Corbett the BEST National Park to Spot Wild Tigers 

Truthfully, it’s a toss-up. 

We went on two group safaris in Jim Corbett and didn’t see a single tiger. We did however see wild elephants, jackals, and lots of Chital & Sambar deer. 

I think *if* you can plan ahead and organize a private safari with an overnight stay inside the park (as I describe below) this IS the best park to visit to see tigers. 

Otherwise— you might as well join a more convenient group safari in Ranthambore National Park. It might not be perfect as far as conditions for the tigers go, but the money goes to protect the tiger’s habitat and the number of visitors per day is limited to try and reduce our impact. They are doing their best. 

The Pros of Visiting Jim Corbett National Park

• Largest # of tigers per square km.
• Fewer tourists than other national parks.
• Near (ish) popular tourist destinations like Rishikesh + Delhi.

Technically speaking, Jim Corbett NP has the highest density of wild tigers in all of India. And therefore the world. This means you have a great chance of seeing one of you plan your safari right. If done correctly, this park also offers an ethical way to see tigers in the wild. Due to its proximity to Delhi, Ranthambore is the most popular national park and therefore has LOTS of tourists that visit. This isn’t great for the tigers. JC offers a great lesser visited alternative. 

The Cons of Visiting Jim Corbett National Park

• Must plan super far in advance if you want a true safari.
• Questionable elephant ethics in the areas within and around the park.

There were definitely some things I didn’t like about Jim Corbett National Park. For starters, the price is pretty astronomical when compared to other tiger parks across India. Secondly, I felt that the animals were NOT the focus of the group safaris. They were simply driving a route and if you happened to see an animal that was incidental.

Another thing I really disliked about Jim Corbett is that the national park staff have several captive elephants that they use for work within the park boundaries. Apparently even riding them to get around and access exceptionally bushy areas. Elephant rides and safaris are also quite prominent just outside the park too which is a bummer.

What Animals Are You Most Likely to See in Jim Corbett?

Even if you don’t see tigers inside Jim Corbett you will probably see wild elephants because the park has a huge population. And they are relatively easy to spot since they like to follow the park trails for easier movement. You’ll also probably see tropical birds, chital deer, sambar deer, jackal, mongoose, grey langurs, rhesus macaques, and barking deer. 

You *could* also see leopards, Asiatic black bears, Indian pangolins, fishing cats, and Himalayan black bears. It’s unlikely, but they are all technically found within the park. 

How to Plan the Best Jim Corbett National Park Safari 

Alright, so this is the situation. There are three kinds of safaris inside Jim Corbett National Park. The park itself is divided into 8 ecotourism zones with different safari options available in each zone. 

1. The Canter Safari. 

This is only available in the Dhikala zone. A canter is a large 20-person open-air bus and the most popular type of safari in the park. Dhikala is the deepest center region of the national park and the most popular zone because of the high likelihood of spotting a tiger.

2. The private jeep safari.

This is available in all zones of the park except for Dhikala . One jeep fits up to 8 people and is reserved in advance for your group. These safari leave 2-3 times per day depending on the zone and only allow 30 vehicles inside each zone at any given time period.

3. The overnight safari. 

This is the only private jeep option available in the Dhikala zone. It’s the same as above BUT you’ll sleep overnight at the ranger station within Jim Corbett to maximize your time in the park. You need to reserve this FAR in advance. It’s the first to sell out and for good reason. This is the kind of safari I recommend to those who want a good chance at spotting a tiger in an ethical way.

Which Zone of Jim Corbett National Park is Best? 

Dhikala is the best zone for seeing both tigers and wild elephants. Therefore it is the best zone in the park. Bijrani is the next best option if you want to book two safaris or are unable to secure a coveted overnight safari spot. 

What Safari NOT to do in Jim Corbett

Whatever you do, do not do the canter safari in Dhikala Zone. Canter safaris suck. They scare away all the animals. The assigned guides didn’t even bother looking for a single animal. And the people on board our canter were loud and seemed to not care about scaring away the wild animals we came to see. I think that local tourists (who get safaris for far cheaper) were more interested in just getting out and enjoying nature rather than spotting wildlife. They actually insisted we leave slightly early just to get some chai. Not ideal for those of us who had to shell out over $100 for the safari.

The Dhikala Zone is deep within the park and takes 2 hours just to reach it. Therefore, by the time the canter reaches the zone you have to turn right back around and drive the same way you came. Basically, the way the safari is set up is awful and not designed for optimal animal viewing. It’s just a waste of time. 

The Best Safari in Jim Corbett 

The overnight private jeep safari in the Dhikala zone is the ONLY way to go. 

This is the most expensive option BUT you are *almost* guaranteed to see tigers. You’ll get an early morning safari as you enter the park, get to chill at the scenic ranger station during the mid-day heat, take an optional afternoon safari (for a small extra fee), sleep at the ranger station, and then take one more morning safari on your way out of the park. This is without a doubt the best bang for your buck and gives you a much less crowded experience. 

Hot Tip: You must book your overnight stay 60 days in advance. This is what got us. We never plan this far ahead and by the time we thought to book it — it was full weeks in advance. It’s worth it to plan your trip around this experience if you want to see some wildlife.

How to Book Your Safari 

Booking a safari in India as a foreigner is not super straightforward. You can’t use the online booking portal without an Indian bank card. We had these same problems with Gir National Park . That means you’ll have to contact Jim Corbett National Park via WhatsApp.

Cost Breakdown of Jim Corbett National Park Safari

We chose to do 2 safaris within the park when we realized that the overnight stay in Dhikala was sold out. We thought this would maximize our time within the park and we would see more animals. That isn’t really how it worked out and honestly, I recommend skipping the park if you can’t do the overnight stay.

The cost of an overnight stay for two people in a double bed in Dhikala is 20,000 rupees or $243. 

The cost of the canter safari in Dhikala is 4200 rupees ($51) per person and the private safari in Bijrani is 10,000 rupees ($121) per jeep. The other safari zones within the park have comparable private jeep prices. This can be an affordable option if you have a large group to split the cost with.

Best Time to Visit Jim Corbett National Park 

November – June the park is open for visitors. During the monsoon season, the park is closed. 

The best time to visit is December – March when the weather is cool. This is good for spotting animals in the early morning as well as comfortable for you as a visitor. By June temperatures are soaring and it makes a mid-day safari really unenjoyable.

Getting to Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett NP is not in the most convenient location. It’s not super close to any major tourist destination but it’s also not ridiculously far away when you consider the scale of India and other tiger reserves in the country. The two most likely destinations you’ll be coming from are Delhi and Rishikesh. 

This park is far more easily accessible if you have your own mode of transport. But assuming you don’t— these are your options. 

Getting to Jim Corbett from Rishikesh

There’s no quick and easy overnight bus between these destinations. There are two common routes. 

Taxi: You can take a 5-6 hour taxi for 6,000 rupees ($73). An alright option if you have people to split the ride with.

Series of buses: You can take a local bus from Rishikesh to Haridwar. Then from Haridwar to Ramradar. This is the closest town to Jim Corbett. From here you’ll have to take a rickshaw to your accommodation. The price of these two buses is around 370 rupees ($3.80) per person in total. This journey takes around 6-8 hours but it’s the route I recommend. 

Getting to Jim Corbett from Delhi 

You have lots of options from Delhi. You can take a direct bus booked from  12.go.Asia  or take a train/bus combination via the Ramnagar Rail Station. 

Where to Stay Near Jim Corbett National Park 

You’re going to need a place to stay before your overnight safari. We stayed at Camp Hornbill for a lot of reasons. It’s a lovely eco-conscious stay in the middle of the wilderness whose proceeds go to support the local community. It’s actually owned by a resident of the teeny village in the area.

If you’re going to make the effort to stay here I recommend giving yourself 2 days outside the safari. You’ll have a chance to chill in the river, lounge in your luxury mud-style huts, eat delish local food, and explore the area with their on-site naturalist to spot some exotic bird life. 

It’s a rare example of peace and quiet in nature in India. 

Be warned: Getting to and from the property will cost you about 1,000 rupees in rickshaw fare unless you’re a good haggler. It’s not the most budget-friendly stay but it’s renowned across India for being a model of local sustainable tourism and I highly recommend it. Another excellent stay if you’re willing to splurge while in India is Dera Amer in Jaipur.

Overall, we could have better planned our own visit to Jim Corbett National Park. We don’t want you to make the same mistake. It’s definitely the best place to spot India’s wild tigers if the proper preparation and planning are done. Our favorite part of the experience was our lovely stay at Camp Hornbill. But follow these tips and you can have the best of both worlds.

Bijrani Jeep Safari

At a distance of 4 km from Ramnagar Railway Station, Bijrani zone in Corbett National Park is the most famous among day tourists. Its entrance is at Amdanda, after entering through Amdanda gate, one can cross about 5 km of buffer zone before reaching the core safari area. Bijrani is a beautiful spot and is known for its vast grass lands, deep forest, stormy drains and wildlife. Once a part of a shooting block, area in and around Bijrani is dry and also has more diverse vegetation. The terrain was famed for the quality of game hunting, during the British period. To visit Bijrani, permission needs to be obtained from The Director, Corbett Tiger Reserve, Ramnagar. Maximum 30 vehicles are allowed to travel into Bijrani during morning and same number of vehicles are allowed in the evening hours. Visitors can enter this zone via Dhangari gate and need to show the permit at the entrance gate. There is watchtower located at the site, tourists can avail views of the valley and the Kanda Ridge from here. Dhikala chaur is one of the largest remaining grasslands of the park and is located in front of the Tourist Complex. Near this grassland also lies Phulai chaur. Tourists can spot wild elephants, chital, hog deer, raptors and numerous grassland bird species here. Built over a 100 year ago, the old rest house at the site is a historic structure.
