HONOLULU TRIP PLANNER

Heading to Hawaii? This Honolulu trip planner includes everything you need to know such as: where to stay, what to eat & things to do.

As the capital of Hawaii, Honolulu is a popular place for US and international visitors. With spectacular beaches, delicious food, fantastic resorts, and many things to do in Oahu beyond Honolulu itself, you can see why so many people vacation here. That is why we are sharing this Honolulu trip planner; so that you can plan the perfect Hawaiian vacation.

Honolulu offers the perfect mixture of warm weather, wonderful beaches, local culture, and interesting attractions, to keep you busy for a week or more. If you are looking to save money on your trip to Hawaii, make sure to read our post on ways to save money whilst traveling the United States of America.

When to visit Honolulu

Although it is always warm in Honolulu, the best time to visit is between November and April, avoiding the rainy and hurricane season.

The ideal months would be April, November, and December, as these are shoulder seasons; so you can expect fewer crowds and cheaper room rates but also still enjoy plenty of festivals. Winter weather is pleasant in Hawaii whilst June through to October has considerably higher temperatures.

Obviously, at the time of writing (2020), there are a few more things to know before you go to Hawaii as the world adapts. So expect fewer crowds over the next year or so as flights continue to get back to normal.

Typical costs in Honolulu

Accommodation

Budget:  Hostels are available for $35 for a dorm bed (even by the sea!), whilst budget rooms for two start at $70. You can also rent an Airbnb for around $100; perfect for groups of travelers.

Midrange: Midrange hotels cost $150 – $250 a night, costing on the higher end the closer you are to the beach.

Luxury: 5-star hotels on the beach will cost upwards of $340.

Transport: The best way together around Hawaii is by renting a car; these cost anywhere from $20 – $80 a day. Book in advance and compare prices to get the best deal.

The average cost of food:

Hawaii has some amazing food and you can eat cheaply too. You can find $2 tacos from a food truck and there are plenty of grocery stores to stock up using. If eating out, expect to pay at least $6 for breakfast, $10 for lunch and $30 for dinner, and double that if you are eating in or around resorts.

Save money in Honolulu

Honolulu is a fantastic place to explore but it can be expensive. However, there are many ways you can save money here too.

  • Avoid the beach – If you are traveling on a budget, avoid booking accommodation on the beach. This is always a lot more expensive than other destinations.
  • Fly via the West Coast – If you are flying from the US, Try to plan a trip via the West Coast. Flights can be found at decent prices in California but expect much higher prices from anywhere else.
  • Hotel deals – If you sign up for hotel emails and compare prices across multiple websites, you can save money, especially not the less expensive hotel chains like Aqua properties and the lower-end Outrigger properties.
  • Limit your car rental – Renting a car is a popular choice for most that visit Hawaii but it can be expensive, as can parking. If you want to see the sights of Hawaii, rent a car for just a few days to see sights then use TheBus (a public bus in Oahu. You can get a 4-day bus pass from any ABC store, ideal if you plan on doing lots of travel.
  • Get a refrigerator – Aim to get a hotel room or rent a place with a refrigerator. This means you can stock up on basics from the ABC stores and avoid eating breakfast out each day.
  • Meal Deals – There are many restaurants in the heart of Waikiki that offer special deals throughout the day. Head to iHop and Cheeseburger in Paradise for breakfast specials or the Wolfgang Steakhouse for decent and affordable lunches.
  • Free activities – There are plenty of free activities to take advantage of, such as many of the beaches, the Friday Night Fireworks at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the free live entertainment and classes at The Royal Hawaiian Center and the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Where to stay in Honolulu

There are many hotels in Honolulu that fit every budget and can be found in every neighborhood. If it is your first time in Honolulu, you will want to stay in the Downtown area to enjoy the lively and bustling neighborhood whilst visiting the major attractions.

[…] over to Oahu? Explore Honolulu and spend a night or two at the stunning Hilton Hawaiian Village for a romantic […]

Saturday 16th of May 2020

This makes me want to go back to Oahu. We visited in February last year and it was a great time to be in Honolulu. This trip planner is so helpful! I wish we'd had it before we visited Honolulu.

We've been to Maui but not to any of the other islands. The Big Island is high on my list of places to visit though, so maybe it's time to start planning!

What an amazing guide! I would love to visit Hawaii. I've never been but it looks lovely and the food recs look great.

What to Do in Honolulu for a Week: 7 Day Oahu Itinerary

Sunset photos in oahu text reads oahu a great itinerary

If you’re looking to enjoy a Hawaiian getaway, you may be wondering where to go and how best to plan your time. Especially if you only have a week in Hawaii, you won’t want to waste a moment of your time in this tropical paradise.

Oahu is arguably the most popular Hawaiian island, and Honolulu is the most popular destination on Oahu. If you’re planning to visit, read on for the best Oahu tourist attractions and other fun things. We’ve created this 7 day Oahu itinerary as an easy guide to help you plan your trip.

Rather than create some random generic list of things to do in Honolulu, we’ve created a travel plan so you can see the entire island in a week. We’re sure you want to immerse yourself in this tropical island paradise! Are we right?

Thought so. The Oahu itinerary in this article includes a wide variety of attractions, from culture to nature to action. And we’ve included lots of public transportation and tour options so you can spend a week in Honolulu without a car if you want.

Getting to Honolulu

Honolulu is the capital of the state of Hawaii, and home to Hawaii’s largest airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The airport code is HNL.

It’s possible to fly into Honolulu from many U.S. destinations, and in fact there are direct flights from cities all over the world, from London and Sydney to Canada and even Southeast Asia. You can check airfares here .

If you’re from Singapore and wondering, “ do Singaporeans need ESTA to USA .” you’ll be happy to know that you can now use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, known as ESTA, to enter the United States. This permit lets you enter the US for tourist, business, and medical purposes for up to 90 days, without the cost and hassle of applying for a visa.

Where to stay for one week in Hawaii

With its famous strip of beach, we recommend staying in Waikiki. It’s centrally located and a great spot for getting to different spots around the island.

As a tourist hub, you can find most hotel chains there, as well as hundreds of restaurants and dozens of attractions.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Waikiki, we recommend:

  • High end: Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort
  • Mid-range: Ramada Plaza Waikiki
  • Budget: T he Beach Waikiki Boutique Hostel

ⓘ TIP: To save hassle getting to your hotel, book an airport shuttle ahead of time. Your driver will be waiting for you when you arrive. You’ll even get help with your bags! Find your ride here.

7 Days on Oahu: itinerary plan

So now we get to the best part: planning your 7 days on Oahu! We strongly suggest you don’t waste time changing hotels. It’s best to stay in Honolulu for a week, and travel around to see it all.

Our 7-day Oahu itinerary is designed to show you the best of the island without rushing around.

Day 1 – Discover Honolulu City

surfer in Hawaii, week vacation in Hawaii

Honolulu is a spectacular place to spend the day. There are museums, parks, and plenty of inviting beaches to spend your time here.

ⓘ BUDGET TIP: You can save up to 55% on admission with the Go Oahu All-Inclusive Pass. Enjoy free entry to 45+ top Hawaiian sights including the Polynesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor and more. Click here for details.

Visit the Honolulu Museum of Art, see a traditional Oahu luau, and catch the most incredible sunset from Magic Island. You’ll find opportunities for shopping, eating, and enjoying the beach and water.

Or head to ‘Iolani Palace to find Hawaii’s royal Polynesian heritage. Did you know that ‘Iolani Palace was the home of Hawaii’s last reigning monarchs and is the only royal palace in the United States? There are lots of interesting facts about Honolulu to discover!

Another quintessential Hawaiian experiences you should try while on Waikiki: Try out a surf lesson with an expert and take home a new skill!

Day 2 – Climb Diamond Head

Start your second morning with a hike up Diamond Head. This volcanic crater rises over Waikiki and offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the city and the ocean from the top.

The crater is a short drive from Honolulu city. The hike is easy enough to be done by the whole family but does have a lot of stairs, and the path gets tricky in places. It’s well worth the effort, though, and the ascent shouldn’t take you more than an hour.

We suggest that you plan your Diamond Head hike early in the morning. You’ll get better photos and views from Diamond Head Lookout if the sun isn’t directly overhead. Afterward, you can unwind on Diamond Head Beach Park.

Day 3 – Travel to Koko Head District Park

Head to the east of the island and spend some time in this lush district park. You’ll find hiking trails, lookout points, and large parks for picnics. If you continue down the coast, you can enjoy more scenic Hawaiian beaches and impressive views.

The park is a 20- to 25-minute drive from Honolulu. If you drive along the coast, down to the Sea Life Park, you’ll have a quick, 30-minute drive back to the city.

ⓘ SAFETY TIP: The hiking trails here are gorgeous but can be tricky to navigate. Inexperienced hikers, children, and seniors should be especially wary. Take a guide if possible.

Day 4 – Visit Pearl Harbor

USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor Oahu

Pearl Harbor is a short 20-minute drive from Honolulu, and it’s a must-visit while you’re on Oahu. December 7, 1941, was a key date in U.S. history, and this will really help you understand America’s role in the battle for the Pacific.

Be sure to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri battleship, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (aka Pacific Aviation Museum), and the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park.

ⓘ TIP: Many people reserve a full day for Pearl Harbor. For the most powerful experience, it’s worth booking a tour with a knowledgeable guide. This tour gets especially good reviews.

Day 5 – Visit Kualoa Ranch

Take a leisurely 40-minute drive to Kualoa Ranch for the day and experience more of Oahu’s stunning scenery. This working cattle ranch also serves as a nature retreat and film location (prepare to enter lifelike scenes from Jurassic Park).

There are so many activities on offer, you’ll be busy all day. From ziplining and ATV rides to tours of Hollywood filming locations, there’s something here for everyone.

Day 6 – Visit Polynesian Cultural Center

Five people performing at the polynesian cultural center, a top Oahu attraction. Sign on the stage says Tonga

Polynesian Cultural Center is a theme park is about an hour’s drive out of Honolulu. It’s best to make this day trip. There are six authentic villages inside the center for you to visit, with guided tours happening between 12 pm and 6 pm daily.

Each island performs cultural presentations throughout the day, and you’ll have a chance to mingle with the natives while there. Spend the day soaking in the culture and end it with a luau dance at dinner.

ⓘ TIP: Book well ahead if you want to attend a luau while visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Day 7 – Head to North Shore

manta ray seen diving in hawaii

Oahu’s North Shore is less than an hour’s drive from Honolulu and is full of even more fun island experiences. If you’re a surfer, this is where you’ll likely catch the best waves. For those who don’t surf, watching the pros on the water is quite a sight to behold.

There’s also snorkeling, skydiving, and hiking available in the area. And you’ll find some of the most delicious island food.

We suggest you make a stop at Turtle Beach before leaving the island, to view the Hawaiian green sea turtles lazing on the sand. Just be sure to respect the turtles, as they’re protected by law.

ⓘ TIP: If you’re feeling adventurous, end your 7-day Hawaii vacation with a spectacular shark dive off the North Shore .

What to add to your Hawaii vacation itinerary

If you’re visiting Hawaii for the first time , go for 7 days in Honolulu and Oahu. You’re in for a week of tropical paradise beaches, hiking, and outdoor adventures around every corner.

A week vacation in Hawaii should be all about having a good time, so if one of our suggestions doesn’t float your boat, feel free to do something else. A good Oahu travel guide will have plenty of inspiration. For example:

  • If you’re traveling with children, Wet’n Wild Hawaii is only 20 minutes from Pearl Harbor. This fun water theme park is fun whether you’re traveling with kids – or if you’re a big kid yourself.
  • For some of the best snorkeling on Oahu, head to Hanauma Bay State Park, along the southeast coast of the island. Imagine being able to swim through a gorgeous reef filled with turtles, rays, fish, and more. You can rent snorkel gear there, but rentals are included with the Go Oahu Card.

Here are a few other ideas:

How to get around Oahu

When it comes to getting around Oahu, you basically have three main options: take public transportation, rent a car, or take a tour. This itinerary works with them all.

If you don’t plan to spend all 7 days in Honolulu by the pool, rent a car for at least part of your trip. Oahu is small and you can easily drive around the entire island in less than a day.

With a good car rental company ( we like this one ), it’s easy to quickly and efficiently arrange everything ahead of time. You can pick your preferred vehicle, compare prices, and secure your booking, all before you even leave your home.

Renting a car gives you independence and the freedom to go when and where you like. Plus, unlike public transportation, you can easily take along any gear you need, and you’ll always be protected from the elements.

Public transportation

Oahu’s public transportation system is called TheBus. It has a surprisingly good route system and stops at many of the best attractions on the island.

With a one-day pass costing only $5.50, this is the cheapest way to get around Oahu. It’s not the fastest way to get around, but it is a good option if you want to relax and avoid Honolulu’s horrible traffic.

Guided tours

If you want to get the most from your trip, book a tour. Tour guides can explain cultural traditions, introduce you to new foods, take you to off-the-beaten-path places, and answer your questions. Transportation is included, and they always speak the local language fluently.

We rely on Get Your Guide and Viator when we travel. So far, every experience has been outstanding.

1 Week in Hawaii: The Perfect Oahu Itinerary for Your First Visit

Do you dream of palm trees, turquoise waters perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing? Of eating tropical fruits, fresh seafood, and rainbow shave ice? I know I do, which I was I was thrilled to finally visited Hawaii in conjunction with my trip to Fiji and Tonga . Not only was it perfect for breaking up a long, long, long, long, flight but it also made for a really fun travel destination. Considering heading here yourself? Here’s how to spend 1 week in Hawaii and my picks for the ultimate Oahu itinerary for first time visitors.

psst: Looking for a travel credit card with lots of perks (like lounge access) that will also allow you to earn points for travel? This is what I use and recommend.

Aloha Mahalo Benches in Hawaii

Getting to Hawaii

For those who live under a rock, Hawaii is an island. Actually, I’m lying. Hawaii is a state that is made up of a number of islands. You can get here by boat (normally a cruise unless you are a master sailor in which case- can we be friends?), but most people will arrive by plane. In my experience in planning my own trip to Hawaii, the cheapest (and fastest) airport to fly into was Honolulu Airport on Oahu. This is the island that I stayed on and will use for the basis of this 1 week in Hawaii article. While you can island hop, it can be expensive and if you only have one week in Hawaii then you may as well set up a base on one island and explore. There’s more than enough to see and do on Oahu and I’m sharing my favourites in this Oahu itinerary.

1 Week in Hawaii: Getting around Oahu

This is my Happy place rainbow coloured sign in Hawaii

As is the case with all Hawaiian Islands, the easiest way to get around is to rent a car. It allows you the most freedom and takes away any stress or time limits. That being said, I know that renting a car isn’t always an option, especially for those travelling solo to Hawaii  like I did. Don’t worry though, you won’t be stuck. There are ways to get around both Honolulu and the island.

In terms of Honolulu area, if you want the easy tourist route that hits the popular spots, consider getting tickets for the Waikiki Trolley which is a hop on hop off bus. You can get 1,4, or 7 day passes here.

You can also use the local bus system which is creatively called ‘The Bus’. The Bus is pretty good for getting around Downtown Honolulu, Waikiki, and the nearby areas such as Pearl Harbour or Hanauma Bay. Your best bet is to buy daily passes as it’s the same price for that as it is for 2 trips. Buses can be cramped and busy, but the drivers are friendly and it is cheap.

The same bus service works on the whole island, however, these journeys tend to be pretty long. I originally thought I’d take the bus up to the North Shore for a day trip but that wasn’t really realistic when I timed it out. I could have gone and spent a night somewhere there, but The Bus also isn’t ideal for carting your luggage around either.

If you do want to explore more of the island, your best bet is to book day trips- there are lots of good ones that I’ll share later. Or, you could hire a taxi or private transfer to take you. Taxis and private hires aren’t cheap but, let’s be honest, nothing is in Hawaii.

Pssst. Looking to save money on your vacation? Check out my article on how to explore Hawaii on a budget.

Where to Stay in Waikiki for 1 Week in Hawaii

Surfjack hotel Hawaii

For my one week in Hawaii, I chose to base myself in Waikiki then relied on day trips and The Bus to get around for site seeing and tours. While I didn’t necessarily love that the Hawaii I experienced was a big city, I also recognized that without renting a car, it really is the best bet.

Honolulu is surprisingly big and it does take a while to get around. Since I’m a beach girl I chose to stay in Waikiki which I actually really liked. Cute shops, cool restaurants and bars, and gorgeous stretches of beach made it the ideal place to stay for a beach vacation. I definitely recommend choosing this part of Oahu as a base for your stay.

Need some recommendations?

If you are on a tight budget or looking to meet people you can try  hostel. Honolulu has a couple and I stayed in one in Waikiki but it wasn’t great. It was pretty dirty, the staff was unfriendly, and it was so loud. So I can’t really recommend it.

That being said, there are some nice more affordable hotel options. Try the Surfjack Hotel. I stayed here for a couple nights at the end of my trip because I needed some privacy. It was about a 10-15-minute walk to Waikiki Beach and had a cool on-site pool. Rooms were spacious and kind of funky- definitely fit the island vibe. Another favourite is the Royal Hawaiian which you may recognize as the pink hotel on Waikiki Beach. Other popular picks include the Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki.

Or, if you are really looking to splurge then try the Moana Surf Rider hotel . It’s THE hotel to stay at in Waikiki and you can’t beat the location. I walked by a few times and definitely wished I had a bigger budget so I could stay there.

The Best Things to do in Oahu: My Oahu Itinerary Favourites

Considering that Oahu is a pretty small island, it sure has a lot to see and do. Some is free, some is pricey (but worth it) so my biggest word of advice to is do a bit of planning ahead of time and figure out what it is you really want to see and do. A lot of the day trips and tours fill up quickly so your best bet is to book your spot in advance. With that in mind, here are my favourite attractions and things to do in Oahu that you should definitely consider adding to your Oahu itinerary.

Snorkelling at Hanauma Bay, Oahu’s Top Snorkel Site

Hanauma Bay

Oahu has no shortage of snorkeling spots but for those looking for a beautiful, easy spot to get to without having to hire a guide or take a tour, I recommend Hanauma Bay. It’s an easy bus ride from Waikiki and has a beautiful beach with a restaurant and change rooms on site making it perfect for a day trip. Hamauma Bay can get busy and crowded (especially on holidays and weekends) but I still thought it was worth it. While I didn’t see any of the Hawaiian green sea turtles, the snorkeling offered plenty of multi-coloured corals and some bright reef fish plus the beach was gorgeous.

Please note that there is a small fee to enter and I do recommend bringing your own snorkel gear. I absolutely loved it here and came twice during my 1 week in Hawaii.

Watch the Surfers at Waikiki Beach

Watching surfers at Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is the busiest beach in Oahu, but you can’t leave the island without spending a little bit of time here whether it’s for swimming, or watching the sunset. The surfers here riding the waves are a pretty iconic site and, for those interested, you can even take some lessons or just rent a board.

Friday Night Fireworks in Waikiki

If you have 1 week in Hawaii, then you will likely be in Oahu for the Friday night fireworks in Waikiki. They aren’t particularily special fireworks per say, but I’m a sucker for fireworks any day so seeing these were pretty fun. I watched from the beach, though you need to be pretty selective about where you go because some of the beach hotels block the view. You can also watch from the water if you book a boat tour.

Circle Island Tour of Oahu

Circle Island Tour Hawaii

If you don’t plan on renting a car and exploring the island on your own, then definitely take a full day circle island tour. There are dozens of operators for this, though some of the stops on this 1-day itinerary differ a little bit. The one I did went to a coffee farm, the Dole Plantation for pineapples (where I had my first ever Dole whip- so good!),Waimea Bay, Haleiwa Town, the famous North Shore food trucks, and even a cocktail stop. We had a TON of fun and I loved being able to get out of the city and see the sites with a local.

Spot the Wild Dolphins of Hawaii

wild spinner dolphins in Hawaii

Oahu is known for it’s spinner dolphins which are beautiful to see out in the water. Prior to 2021, you could actually swim with them. However, while some people and businesses allowed you to swim with the dolphins in Hawaii ethically and responsibly, some didn’t. Sadly, it got to the point where laws had to be put into place to stay away from the dolphins for their safety and protection. While you can no longer swim with the dolphins in Hawaii, you can still go out and search for them in an ethical and responsible manner. This tour offers dolphin viewing as well as snorkel stops and, depending on the time of year, maybe some whale sightings.

Whale Watching in Hawaii (Winter Only)

Humpback whale in Hawaii

Love whales? Me too. Hawaii is one of the best places to see humpback whales, especially on the North Shore. However, it is a seasonal activity that can only be done in the winter months. Whale season in Hawaii runs from November until May with the best viewings from January until March. While you can’t swim with the humpback whales in Hawaii ( you can in Tonga  and French Polynesia ) the whale watching tours are a great way to see them up close.

Book your whale watching tour in Hawaii here.

Shopping in Waikiki

Shopping may not seem like one of the top things to do in Hawaii but I happened to be there a couple months before Christmas so I had a lot of fun checking out the shops in Waikiki and finding fun and unique things for friends and family back home- especially the women I was shopping for. From spa and bath products to unique beachy jewelry and more, there was lots to choose from. I might have even picked up a couple of fun things for myself (no regrets).

Take a Hike

Hawaii sunset hike

Oahu has tons of hiking trails, a couple of which are just outside Waikiki and can easily be reached by public transit. Perhaps the most popular hike is Diamond Head which offers a scenic overlook over Waikiki and the ocean. Just make sure you check opening and closing times ahead of time, we tried to go for sunset only to discover it was closed.

Another really popular hike in Oahu is Koko Head Crater. This hike is made up of over 1200 ‘stairs’ formed by old train tracks. You should probably be a comfortable hiker to tackle this one as it can be a bit precarious at points but the viewpoint at the top makes it look like it’s worth it.

Perhaps the most iconic hike in Oahu is the Stairway to Heaven or the Haiku stairs. If you use Instagram no doubt you’ve seen several travel ‘influencers’ posting shots from this hike. Well, guess what? This hike is actually illegal and as of 2019 comes with a hefty fine of nearly $1000. The stairs are now considered to be too dangerous and there have been several deaths here. So, do yourself a favour, and skip this one during your 1 week in Hawaii.

Step into the Scenes of Your Favourite Movies

plan a trip to honolulu hawaii

Oahu is a popular filming locations for several well-known movies including the latest Jumagi, the Jurassic Park series, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pearl Harbour, Blue Crush, and many more. If you are a big movie fan in general, or love one of these specific movies then you may be interested in heading to the scenes where they were filmed.

Perhaps the most popular filming location in Hawaii is Kualoa Ranch which was the filming location for one of my favourites: Jurassic Park (love me some dinosaurs). A visit here does have to booked as part of a tour, but it’s a fun way to spend a day.

Another fun place to stop if you are renting a car is Turtle Bay Resort. You don’t have to stay here to visit (though it is beautiful and if you have the budget you may want to), but it’s worth popping into the bar to have a drink and check out the beach views. This is where Forgetting Sarah Marshall was filmed so you’ll probably recognize a lot of the scenery.

Learn about the History of Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor and American flag

You can’t come to Hawaii without knowing a bit of history behind Pearl Harbor; home of the infamous bombing that kickstarted WWII. Pearl Harbor takes nearly an hour to get to by bus from Waikiki (so time your visit accordingly) and is comprised of several museums. Admission to the USS Arizona Memorial is free, though tickets are limited so I do recommend taking advantage of the book 1 day in advance option online. Booking opens at 7am for next day tours and costs $1.50USD to reserve your spot. These tickets are limited so get them while they last. You can get them here.

You can also visit with a guide to see other parts of Pearl Harbor as well. Take a look at this tour.

Embrace the Island Life

Food Truck North Shore Hawaii

Hawaii may be part of the USA, but it has its own culture and plenty of cool things to see, do, learn about, and try.

One of the best ways to enjoy your 1 week in Hawaii is to make sure you try plenty of local food. If you love seafood and fresh fruit, you’ll be in heaven in Hawaii. Two of my Hawaiian favourites are poke bowls and rainbow shave ice, but there’s way more to try. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be experimental with food, do yourself a favour and pick one local spot for a meal rather than joining the massive queue at The Cheesecake Factory.

Another fun way to get your Aloha on is to join a Luau. Now, you need to know going in that these cater to tourists. It’s not a local thing that you happen to stumble upon. Oh, and they tend to come with hefty pricetags. But, you’ll get a pretty lei, a delicious meal, and an impressive show that makes for a fun night out. Book your Luau tickets here.

You can also learn more about the Hawaiian culture. The Polynesian Cultural Centre is a popular place to visit. There are six Polynesian villages to explore. You can also stay the evening and take part in their Luau.

Uncover the Royal History of Hawaii

Iolani Palace, Honolulu

Did you know that Hawaii had a royal family? Before it became part of the USA, Hawaii was a kingdom that was ruled by it’s own monarchs. In fact, Hawaii is the only place in the USA that has  a real royal palace.

The Iolani Palace was finished in 1882 and served as the home for the last king of Hawaii. Funnily enough, this palace actually received electricity before the White House. Today, travellers to Hawaii can visit this Iolani Palace and take a tour to discovery the history of Hawaii and it’s royal heritage.

For those interested in Hawaii’s history and culture, another must during your 1 week in Hawaii is the Polynesian Cultural Centre. It’s one of the top-rated places to visit in Oahu and and offers some great experiences. There are multiple ticket options depending on the type of visit you wish to have. You can learn more here .

Must Pack Items for 1 Week in Hawaii

Sitting on the wall in Hanauma Bay, Hawaii

Packing for a tropical vacation isn’t too tricky, but there are definitely a few must-have items that I strongly recommend you bring with you. One, because you’ll want them and two, because you’ll save yourself some money by bringing rather than having to buy while you are there. Here are my suggestions on what to pack for Hawaii.

  • Dry bag: Perfect for keeping your clothing/towel/electronics dry for any beach days or time spent out on a boat. Get some here.
  • A quick dry towel. Some resorts/hotels will give you beach towels but they tend to either be small or thick and slow to dry. I’m a big fan of this brand of quick dry towel for travel- plus they are big and perfect to dry off or use as a beach blanket. Take a look at these ones.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen. Sunscreen is a must and a reef safe brand is the way to go. Especially since Hawaii is banning any non-reef-safe sunscreens. There are a few brands but I’m a big supporter of Stream 2 Sea products  which have been tried and tested.
  • I suggest bringing your own mask and snorkel because there are so many places around the island that you may want your own rather than relying on rental. Check out this set.
  • Good swimming gear! If you are a woman, check my list of tried and tested size-inclusive brands that I love for travel and the ocean here.

Final Tips for Your Oahu Itinerary

Oahu is a lot of fun and a great destination to choose for your one week in Hawaii. Whether you are looking for adventure, culture, or just a laid back vacation, you’ll find what you are looking for on this tropical island. Just remember that Hawaii is a dream destination for many, so for the best deals and to avoid disappointment, your best bet is to book things (hotels, tours, etc.) in advance to avoid disappointment!

Ready to Book Your Trip?

Don’t forget travel insurance!

Please do not travel without travel insurance! I’ve had to use it multiple times throughout my travels and it has saved me thousands of dollars. You can learn more about travel insurance  here . If you are looking for a provider I love and recommend  SafetyWing . For Canadian readers, take a look at  SoNomad.

Book your accommodation

I love and recommend  booking.com  for accommodation. They have a range of hostels, guesthouses, hotels, and resorts. Plus, the platform has a great loyalty program that means the more you book, the more you can save.

Book your tours

My go-to tour provider that I love to recommend is  GetYourGuide . They have options all over the world and partner with local companies for everything from day trips to food experiences and even airport transfers.

Get connected

If you want to have data while travelling for online maps or any other needs, an esim is one of the easiest solutions. I’m a big fan of Airalo and have used their sim cards around the world from Brazil to Uzbekistan, Greece to the USA. It’s really easy- you download the app, pick what country you want an esim for, and after you purchase it follow the installation instructions. You can use promo code HANNAH3326 to save $3USD on your next esim purchase.

Not sure what to pack?

I have destination-specific guides for some countries but you can also check my  travel essentials  and  camera gear  if you are looking for some ideas.

Am a vet from World War 2, 91 years old, is this two big of a trip for us to make. If you have some good idears, for a trip like this for 10 days. [email protected] let me know.

Hey Stanley, this itinerary might be a bit busy/adventurous. But you may enjoy aspects of it. Hawaii is beautiful and has lots to offer

[…] get it. My first trip to Hawaii I spent about 1 week in Oahu and struggled to pick a place to stay. Did I want to stay downtown? By the beach? Away from Honolulu […]

We’re about 70 and like short and not too strenuous hikes, are there places for that?

I only know of the bigger/trickier hikes. Diamond Head might be an option but the path is quite uneven so depends on your comfort level. Maybe do a bit of research into it. If you ask locally, there might be other suggestions too!

Can you please tell me where those Aloha/Mahalo benches are located?

They were up at the north shore in Haleiwa 🙂

Where is Honolulu?

Nicknamed the Manhattan of the Pacific for its glittering skyscrapers, the city of Honolulu is located on the southeastern end of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, near the largest port in the state.

Honolulu can be a complicated area of Hawaii to pin down, despite its status as the capital. What gets confusing for most visitors is that there is the city of Honolulu with its sprawling neighborhoods, but also the county of Honolulu, which happens to be the entire island of Oahu.

When you’re doing your research, most guides and websites will be referring to the city of Honolulu, but it’s always good to double-check.

Many Hawaii cruises start/end or dock in Honolulu, if you’re heading to Oahu to catch a cruise ship, check out our Hawaii cruise resources! Find the best time to cruise Hawaii , and learn about all of Hawaii’s cruise ports Pick from the best Honolulu shore excursions (and yes, we have Kauai , Maui , and the Big Island covered too) Before you go, grab a Cruising Hawaii Guide to get all your cruise planning done in one place!

What is the Best Area to Stay in Honolulu?

As the bustling capital of Hawaii, figuring out where to stay in Honolulu can seem daunting. Many of Honolulu’s visitors stay in the Waikiki neighborhood. A plethora of hotels and vacation rentals, beautiful Waikiki Beach , and tons of restaurants and activities are all reasons why this is such a popular spot to set up shop on Oahu.

If you’re not keen to spend your time in the tourist hot spot of Waikiki, there are over 24 neighborhoods in Honolulu to choose from. Some of our favorites are Kaka’ako, Chinatown, Kahala, and Ala Moana.

Kaka’ako is one of Honolulu’s trendiest neighborhoods with loads of restaurants and bars to dive into and cool street art to spot. Honolulu’s Chinatown is located near the financial district and is a bustling cultural center with traditional dim sum restaurants, colorful temples, and an artsy core of studios and galleries to explore. If Kaka’ako is the hip spot in town, then Chinatown is its funky little sister.

Also located in the heart of downtown, the Ala Moana neighborhood has a more laidback and residential feel, while still sharing a border with lively Waikiki. Kahala is situated much more off the beaten path, south of Honolulu’s downtown. This neighborhood is secluded from the hustle and bustle with a few beaches and plenty of natural areas to explore nearby.

How Many Days Do You Need in Honolulu?

Five days is the perfect amount of time to spend in Honolulu, especially if you’re planning to explore more of the island of Oahu . If you are just sticking to the city, you could probably get by with three days instead, although you’d be missing out on some of the best things to do in the “Gathering Place” as Oahu is affectionately called.

Despite being Hawaii’s third largest island, Oahu is fairly large and it can take a while to get around – especially with the notoriously headache-inducing traffic. Honolulu makes for a great place to base yourself for explorations further afield or to simply take a relaxing beach trip – it does have some of the best beaches in Hawaii after all!

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Waikiki Beach

What Is There to Do in Honolulu?

As the capital of Hawaii and the largest city in this chain of islands, there’s an endless list of things to do in Honolulu !

First and foremost, you’ll want to head out to the city’s famous beaches. Punctuated by views of the Honolulu skyline and striking Diamond Head as a backdrop, world-famous Waikiki Beach is hard to beat in terms of views. Head to either of the far ends of this 2-mile-long stretch of sand to seek out a quieter atmosphere, or hang out in the center if you want to be in the heart of it all.

We also highly recommend a visit to Kahanamoku Beach for incredible views of Diamond Head that rival those of Waikiki Beach. Bonus, it’s also previously been rated the #1 Beach in America by Dr. Beach . This is an excellent spot to watch the Friday Night Fireworks, year-round.

Speaking of beaches, Waikiki Beach is one of the best areas on Oahu to take surfing lessons . Its lazy, rolling waves are great for beginners and we highly recommend signing up for a lesson if this is your first time. For the old pros, there are several areas to rent surfboards.

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Waikiki Surfing

Foodies rejoice! You can also eat and drink your way through Honolulu having extraordinary meals. Traditional Hawaiian food is a mixture of fresh, local ingredients and influences from China, Japan, Korea, Portugal, and mainland America. Lucky for you, Honolulu is one of the best places in Hawaii to dive into the food scene. Some of our favorites are poke bowls at Sato, udon and spam musubi from Murugame Udon, and don’t miss shave ice or malasadas if you have a sweet tooth.

A quintessential Hawaiian activity is attending a luau and there are plenty to choose from in Honolulu. One of the best is the oceanfront luau at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel! These are our favorite on Oahu , but we actually say you should skip the luau and head out on this cultural catamaran experience from Waikiki .

Outdoorsy types will also have a field day around Honolulu from snorkeling and surfing to the Diamond Head Crater or Manoa Falls hike. Or just take a walk around Kapiolani Park and visit the Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo.

On the other hand, history buffs aren’t left out with plenty of history and heritage to explore at the Bishop Museum and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

And of course there is plenty of shopping and nightlife. The Ala Moana Center, the Royal Hawaiian Center, and the stores along Kalakaua Avenue all have a wide range of shops.

Where to Stay in Honolulu:The 10 Best Places

Whether you want to be front and center in Waikiki or a little more off-the-beaten-path, these are the best places to stay in Honolulu. There aren’t many places to stay in downtown Honolulu, so you won’t see any on this list. Plus we have full reviews of most of these hotels which you can find by clicking the links in the descriptions below or book directly using the booking buttons.

1. Halekulani Hotel

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Halekulani

The Halekulani Hotel is the picture of elegance and a fantastic place to stay if you’re celebrating something special. This oceanfront accommodation provides a tranquil respite from the bustling feel of downtown Waikiki while also providing guests with a quintessential Honolulu experience.

If opulent luxury is your cup of tea, this is the hotel for you! From unparalleled service and ultra-friendly staff, a beautiful restaurant and bar to watch the sunset, and an overall relaxing feel that can be hard to come by, Halekulani Hotel is worth the splurge – especially since there’s no resort fee.

Unfortunately, staying at one of the most luxurious hotels in Waikiki comes with an equally as extravagant price tag. Experiences are limited to exercise classes and while there isn’t much of a beach out front, the stunning 82’ pool made from 1 million glass tiles makes up for it.

2. Halepuna Hotel

Where to Stay in Honolulu - The Halepuna hotel

Like its sister hotel, the Halekulani, Halepuna also enjoys a more quiet and secluded vibe, despite being in the heart of Waikiki. Although this hotel isn’t beachfront, it’s close, and the hot tub and infinity pool with ocean views certainly help.

Ocean-view rooms and suites overlook the beautiful Waikiki scenery and feature balconies that are great for enjoying a drink. Incredible service and friendly staff, beautiful contemporary decor and design, and access to many of the amenities at the Halekulani Hotel next door make a stay at Halepuna a no-brainer.

Admission to several nearby attractions is included in the price of your room, including the Bishop Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Manoa Heritage Center. Rooms are a little small and parking fees can add up, but overall it’s hard to find much wrong with the Halepuna Hotel!

3. Royal Hawaiian Hotel

Where to Stay in Honolulu - The Royal Hawaiian

Nicknamed the “Pink Palace” for its rosy facade, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel first opened its doors in 1927 as Honolulu’s premier luxury hotel. The Royal Hawaiian is situated on 15 acres while still being in the center of Waikiki. This is one of our favorite accommodation options in the Waikiki neighborhood and a rare opportunity to stay in a piece of Hawaiian history, which is why we always opt for rooms in their Historic Wing.

There are two different pools onsite, one geared towards kids with a waterslide and fountain area, and one that’s more quiet and secluded. Both have plenty of lounge chairs although you might need to get there early to snag one at the kid-friendly pool. The hotel is also situated right on a beautiful stretch of beach and has chairs and umbrellas for rent.

Dining options both at and around the hotel are excellent. Three restaurants are located onsite, Mai Tai Bar, Azure, and Surfside Lanai. Bonus points for the Royal Hawaiian Bakery which serves up pink pastries and breakfast items. To top it off, one of the most highly rated luaus on Oahu, Ahaaina, is also located at the hotel and pays homage to Hawaiian royalty!

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Royal Hawaiian view

Guests can choose to stay in the historic wing (even better if you get views of the ocean) or their newer tower that has larger, updated rooms with lanais. The list of included activities is endless with morning yoga and cultural experiences like ukulele lessons, hula, and lei making, just to name a few.

While there aren’t many things that we don’t like about the Royal Hawaiian, the parking and resort fees can be a shocker ( although this is typical for hotels in Hawaii ), and having to rent beach chairs and umbrellas on the beach is a little annoying.

If you’re looking for shopping you won’t have to walk far as the Royal Hawaiian Center has plenty of stores and restaurants to keep you busy.

4. Sheraton Waikiki

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Sheraton Waikiki

The Sheraton Waikiki recently underwent a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation and they’re finally ready to unveil it all. Suites have been updated with modern furnishings and contemporary decor with lanais that either overlook the ocean or cityscape in every room. This resort is big – and it feels like it with over 1,600 rooms.

Amenities know no bounds at the Sheraton Waikiki and include the #2 Best Hotel Pool in America according to USA Today (2nd only to the Koloa Landing on Kauai) – also shared with the Royal Hawaiian. The resort feel continues with multiple restaurants and bars like the oceanfront RumFire or Kai Market, as well as snack areas like Lawson Station and The Cookie Corner. Guests can also hop over to the Sheraton’s sister hotels, like the Royal Hawaiian , to experience their dining options.

Cultural activities include lei making, hula, and ukulele lessons, alongside beach activities like surfing lessons. Guests are also able to easily walk over to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, located just next door, for their awesome luau experience. Overall, the name of the game at the Sheraton Waikiki is location, location, location, and access to a never-ending list of amenities.

Keep in mind that onsite food and drink can be pricey and getting across the resort requires a hefty walk at times.

5. Queen Kapiolani Hotel

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Queen Kapiolani

If you’d rather forgo proximity to downtown in favor of stunning views and a more budget-friendly option, the Queen Kapiolani Hotel might be just the place!

Guests who stay at the Queen Kapiolani can look forward to a more traditional hotel feel instead of a busy resort while still being only a few minutes’ walk from the beach and the Honolulu Zoo and located just on the outskirts of the Waikiki high rises in the Kapahulu neighborhood.

Although this is a less pricey alternative, there are still loads of fun experiences and amenities onsite. Relax at the pool with seriously jaw-dropping views of Diamond Head, take part in a lei-making class or hula lessons, and enjoy live entertainment. A poolside bar and restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner are great spots to grab a bite or drink while also providing stunning scenery.

Did we mention they have Dole Whip and fresh juice to welcome you? While it’s definitely a more budget-friendly option, the Queen Kapiolani doesn’t escape the daily resort and parking fees that are typical of Honolulu, but it does offer up touches that make it feel like a special stay.

6. Outrigger Beachcomber

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Waikiki Beachcomber

If you’re feeling a bit disenchanted by the hefty price tag of Honolulu’s resorts, the Outrigger Beachcomber might be the solution. This is one of our favorite budget options in Waikiki if you don’t mind a super short walk down to the beach.

What the Beachcomber lacks in oceanfront location it more than makes up for in both savings and proximity to activities – and places to grab a bite to eat. You’re still right in the middle of Waikiki and just a block from the beach, with a rooftop pool and hot tub to boot.

Staff were incredibly friendly during our visit and the entire design of the hotel took inspiration from local artists and is beautifully decorated. Onsite dining options include the awesome Maui Brewing Co. and the Hawaiian Aroma Caffe, both of which are inexpensive and absolutely delicious.

Some guests did complain a bit about noise due to its central location, but we didn’t find it to be anything overwhelming. At the end of the day, the Outrigger Beachcomber is the perfect middle ground of a great price and excellent location all while being beautifully designed.

7. Kahala Resort

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Kahala Resort lobby

If you’re looking for ultimate luxury – this is it! Located 15 minutes away from Waikiki in the quiet Kahala neighborhood, the Kahala Resort is the creme de la creme of Waikiki accommodations. With sprawling rooms, a luxurious open-air feel to the entire resort, and truly remarkable service, it’s no wonder why celebrities and dignitaries alike frequently book rooms here.

This secluded, beachfront resort is your one-stop shop for a relaxing getaway with all the benefits of being close to Waikiki. Even better? No resort fees! The beach in front of the Kahala Resort is calm, both in terms of ocean conditions and fellow visitors. A reef keeps out the swells while simultaneously providing a great place for kids to splash around.

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Kahala Resort

If you’re expecting to be in a walkable destination, this option probably isn’t for you. You’ll need a car and parking fees aren’t included. The same goes for an opulent pool experience. While the Kahala Resort’s pool is in a beautiful spot with ocean views and poolside service, its fairly small.

Another important factor to keep in mind is that this hotel offers Dolphin Quest. Essentially, dolphins are kept in captivity here and while they’re well cared for, it might make some visitors uneasy – particularly the fact that you can frequently see them swimming in their lagoon from some of the rooms.

8. Hyatt Regency Waikiki

Where to stay in Honolulu - Hyatt Regency Waikiki

Prime access to the beach, recently renovated rooms, located right in the beating heart of Waikiki, and luxury amenities like a spa and fancy restaurants. What more could you ask for? The Hyatt Regency Waikiki offers all of this and more at its nearly oceanfront resort.

This resort feels posh and it’s big, we’re talking over 1,200 rooms! Dining options are elegant and include restaurants like the SHOR and SWIM, both featuring local ingredients, as well as the Buffet at Hyatt an open-air restaurant with international dinner options.

You’ll be in the center of it all here which means it can feel a bit busy at times. If you don’t mind sacrificing peace and tranquility in nature for being a walking distance from anything and everything, this is might be your best bet in Honolulu!

Note that parking is very pricey at $50 to $60 a night depending on if you want valet service (and then you’ll want to factor in tips). You’ll also need to fork up some serious cash to eat at the resort and the pool can get pretty busy at times.

9. Aston Waikiki Beach Tower

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Aston Waikiki Beach Tower

While the Aston Waikiki Beach Tower feels like a 5-star resort, it’s actually individual vacation rentals! Despite each unit being separately owned, you’ll still feel like you’re staying at a Waikiki resort or hotel with cultural activities, daily housekeeping, both yoga classes and a fitness center, and two pools, one that’s specifically geared towards kids.

One of the main draws here is the space. So much room for activities! Each apartment is 880 to 1,200 square feet, depending on how many bedrooms you want. You’ll also have the added comfortability of in-unit laundry, private lanais, and a full-size kitchen, all great if you have little ones in tow. If you don’t feel like cooking, you’re also a few minutes’ walk from the best restaurants in Waikiki. Did we mention the beach is less than a block away?

10. Waikiki Shore

Where to Stay in Honolulu - Waikiki Shore

The Waikiki Shore is Honolulu’s only vacation rental option that also happens to be beachfront. Decor and furnishings vary due to the fact that each of these condos is individually owned, but this also makes it fun to go through and choose the one that suits you best. When booking, be sure to look for an oceanfront room that offers beautiful views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean and Diamond Head in the distance.

Room size varies from a studio to a 2-bedroom suite, giving guests additional flexibility in price and room size. This is another Outrigger property and accommodations can be booked via their website and VRBO. Although there is no pool located onsite, guests are able to use the pool at the hotel next door. Plenty of restaurants and bars are within walking distance along with the pretty Fort DeRussy Beach Park.

Where to stay in Honolulu Oahu

I'm the co-founder, with my husband Jordan, of The Hawaii Vacation Guide. We have lived on Maui and Oahu and continue to travel, experience, and learn about the Hawaiian Islands. We travel with our kids, Henry and Edith. I am a planner! I love to plan trips from the mainland and island-hopping adventures, excursion days, and everything in-between. I spend a lot of my time in Hawai'i on a SUP and my favorite time of year in Hawai'i is whale season!

Oahu, affectionately referred to as the ‘Heart of Hawaii’, is a vibrant blend of natural beauty, adventure, and rich cultural heritage. If three words were to capture the essence of Oahu, they would be: enchanting, dynamic, and historic. This island paradise is a tropical tapestry of lush rainforests, ethereal waterfalls, and pristine beaches that are a surfer’s dream. Yet, Oahu’s charm extends far beyond its natural allure. The island pulses with a dynamic urban scene, a buzzing nightlife, and a mosaic of cuisines that will make foodies swoon. Delve a bit deeper, and Oahu reveals its historical side, with sites chronicling everything from ancient Hawaiian history to Pearl Harbor . Brimming with wonder and excitement, Oahu invites you to immerse yourself in its unique island magic.

Geography & Climate

Oahu aerial view

Embracing a tropical climate, Oahu treats you to warm weather throughout the year, with average temperatures hovering between 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. While the winter months from November to April can bring some rain and slightly cooler weather, it’s typically followed by stunning rainbows—a sweet treat from Mother Nature herself! So, whether you’re lazing on the glistening beaches or exploring the verdant hiking trails, Oahu’s geography and climate is a slice of paradise waiting to be discovered!

Culture & People

Polynesian culture

Oahu’s culture is a lively meander through the island’s rich history, its warm-hearted people, and their unwavering love for the land and each other. Here, you’ll find a blend of both ancient and modern Hawaii. You’ll hear the strumming of the ukulele, see graceful hula dancers, and witness the cultural importance of surfing to the locals. The ‘Aloha Spirit’ isn’t just a saying, it’s a way of life here, one that respects and honors the land (or ‘aina) and one another. Get ready to indulge in the island’s diverse food scene, deeply rooted in the fusion of different cultures that call Oahu home. Don your lei, get ready for a luau, and let’s dive into the vibrant culture that awaits you!

How to Plan Your Oahu Trip

Booking flight tickets: Best deals and recommended airlines

To make the most of your Oahu adventure, planning your flight is key. With plenty of airlines flying to this tropical paradise, you have numerous options to consider. Major airlines such as Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, and United offer regular flights to Oahu.

Hawaiian Airlines, being the largest airline in Hawaii, offers the most comprehensive schedule, so you’re likely to find a flight that suits your timing perfectly. For budget-conscious travelers, airlines like Southwest and JetBlue often have impressive deals. The best time to book a flight to Oahu is typically during the shoulder seasons — spring (April to mid-June) and fall (September to mid-December). Airfare during these periods can be significantly cheaper than during the peak tourist seasons of summer and winter.

Before booking, always compare prices with online travel agencies. They provide a great overview of different airlines and prices, allowing you to snag the best deal. But remember, once you find a good deal, check the airline’s direct website. Sometimes, they offer even better rates or additional perks for booking directly. Signing up for fare alerts can also help you get the best deals. Websites let you set up price alerts for your desired destination and will notify you when fares drop.

Preparing Your Budget

When planning your trip to Oahu, a key factor you’ll need to consider is your budget. Oahu, like any other tourist destination, can be as expensive or as budget-friendly as you make it, but having a clear idea of the potential costs can help you plan better.

The average daily cost for a trip to Oahu is around $60 per person for meals and $40 for local transportation. Consider additional costs such as accommodation, which can range from $60 to $1000 per night depending on your preference for luxury or budget hotels.

For activities, budget around $60 to $350 per person per day if you plan to explore attractions.

Don’t forget to account for incidental costs like shopping, tips and additional expenses that may crop up. It’s always a good idea to add a buffer of around 10-15% to your budget to manage any unexpected costs. By doing some research and setting a realistic budget, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable Oahu vacation.

Weather and Climate Considerations

he weather in Oahu is nothing short of delightful, embodying the island’s tropical charm. With a year-round warm climate, Oahu is a year-round destination. There are two main seasons: the “Kau” (summer) from May to October and the “Hooilo” (winter) from November to April. Even during winter, the weather is relatively mild and pleasantly warm. Rainfall is a bit higher during the winter months and mostly occurs overnight. You’ll also want to keep in mind that different parts of the island can have different weather patterns, with the Windward (east) side receiving more rainfall than the Leeward (west) side. Be prepared for the occasional downpour and remember, it’s all part of the tropical experience!

Peak Tourist Seasons vs Off-peak

When it comes to visiting Oahu, understanding the difference between peak tourist seasons and off-peak times can significantly influence your travel experience. Peak tourist seasons in Oahu are during the summer months June to August) and winter holidays (mid-December to early January), when the island’s warm weather provides a great getaway from colder climates. However, these times are often crowded, and prices for flights and accommodations tend to be higher.

On the other hand, the off-peak seasons—spring (April to early June) and fall (September to mid-December)—offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with fewer tourists and often lower prices. While the weather can be slightly more unpredictable, with occasional rain showers, these periods still offer plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. The choice ultimately depends on your preferences for crowd size, cost, and weather.

Here, you can indulge in exquisitely prepared dishes while enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean. For a more casual and rugged taste of local fare, visit the numerous food trucks scattered around the island, especially on the North Shore. They serve everything from fresh seafood, grilled meats to a variety of fusion cuisine.

Don’t forget to visit a luau for a traditional Hawaiian feast served alongside a vibrant performance of Polynesian music and hula dancing. Eating in Oahu is not just about filling your stomach, it’s about immersing yourself in the island’s rich cultural heritage and traditions. So, dig in and bon appétit!

Local Delicacies to Try

Tasting the local cuisine of a region is like a journey into the heart of its culture, and Oahu is no different. Here are a few local delicacies you should not miss:

  • Poke: A traditional Hawaiian dish made with raw, diced, and marinated fish, usually Ahi Tuna. It’s a beloved local favorite.
  • Spam Musubi: This sushi-style treat is a popular snack and consists of a slice of grilled Spam on top of a block of rice, wrapped together with nori.
  • Shave Ice: A classic Hawaiian dessert, it’s a mountain of finely shaved ice drenched in sweet fruit syrups. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom for an extra special treat.
  • Loco Moco: A hearty local dish that consists of rice topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and brown gravy.
  • Malasada: These Portuguese doughnuts, brought to the islands by immigrants, are fluffy, sugar-coated, and often filled with tropical custards.

Give these dishes a go to truly experience the flavors of Oahu!

Must-Visit Attractions

Oahu aerial view

A trip to Oahu is incomplete without a visit to its iconic Pearl Harbor, where you can pay homage to the lives lost during the tragic event that propelled the U.S. into World War II. Be sure to also visit the historic Iolani Palace , the only royal palace in the U.S., to get a glimpse of Hawaii’s royal past.

Next on your list should be Waikiki Beach , the world-famous hotspot known for its golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and lush palm trees. Waikiki is not just a beach but a hub of activities, shopping, dining, and nightlife.

Nature enthusiasts must not miss out on hiking the Diamond Head State Monument , a dormant volcano offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu. Lastly, step into the surfer’s paradise at North Shore , famous for its massive waves and being the home to international surfing competitions. Whether you’re a surfer or not, the breathtaking beauty of North Shore is a sight to behold!

Outdoor Activities to Try

Diamond Head Crater Hiking Tour

Time to get your adventure hat on! Unleash your inner thrill-seeker with Oahu’s diverse range of outdoor activities. Ready to ride the waves? Trade your flip-flops for a surfboard and get ready to surf the North Shore , world-renowned for its magnificent swells. If you’re more of a landlubber, lace up your hiking boots and conquer the Diamond Head trail. It’s a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views at the summit are worth every step.

For underwater enthusiasts, snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of Hanauma Bay offers an unforgettable glimpse into Hawaii’s vibrant marine life. Don’t forget to say Aloha to the charming Hawaiian green sea turtles ! Whatever your adventure level, Oahu has an outdoor activity that will leave you with fun-filled memories and incredible stories to tell.

How Long Should You Stay

Wave goodbye to those quick weekend getaways and ride the waves of a real vacation! On Oahu, there’s such a wealth of sun-soaked beaches, tropical adventures, and vibrant culture, that a week would be your absolute minimum to start soaking it all up. For the full island experience – and trust us, you don’t want to miss a thing – we recommend planning a stay of at least 10 to 14 days. This gives you ample time to explore the bustling city life of Honolulu, embark on breathtaking hikes, bask in the sun on the North Shore, and still have plenty of time for those precious moments of doing absolutely nothing but enjoying the island vibes!

What to Pack Based on the Time of Year

When planning your packing list for Oahu, it’s essential to take into account the time of year.

  • Spring and Summer (March through August): During these months, Oahu enjoys warm weather and lots of sunshine. Pack light, breathable clothing, swimwear, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and a pair of sunglasses. Don’t forget your flip-flops for the beach and comfortable shoes for exploring and hiking.
  • Fall and Winter (September through February): While Oahu’s winters are mild, the evenings can get a bit cooler and there can be some rain. In addition to your summer clothing, pack a light sweater or jacket, a rain jacket, and waterproof shoes. If you’re planning on hiking, consider moisture-wicking clothes and a pair of sturdy hiking boots.

Regardless of when you visit, a reusable water bottle and a backpack for day trips are must-haves. Also, remember to leave space in your suitcase for all the wonderful souvenirs you’ll find! Happy packing!

Getting Around Oahu

Public Transportation

Public transportation in Oahu is managed by TheBus, an extensive system that reaches most parts of the island. It’s an affordable and eco-friendly choice but may require some strategizing to match bus schedules with your itinerary.

Car, Bike, and Scooter Rentals

Renting a car offers greater flexibility and convenience, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace. However, it’s worth noting that parking can sometimes be challenging, especially in busy areas like Waikiki, and the cost of gas and rental fees can add up. Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preferences, budget, and comfort with driving in a new environment.

If you’re looking for a breezy, fun way to explore Oahu, renting a bike or scooter is your ticket to adventure! With the wind in your hair and the island’s beauty surrounding you, it’s an unforgettable experience. For shorter distances, bikes are perfect. They offer a slow-paced ride allowing you to immerse fully in the island’s scenic beauty. Scooters, on the other hand, are great for longer distances. They give you the freedom to zip around different sights without spending too much time or energy. Remember to always wear a helmet and follow local traffic laws. Now, get ready to pedal (or scoot) your way to an epic Oahu adventure!

Taking a Tour

How about immersing yourself in the vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes of Oahu with a guided tour? Yep, that’s right! Tours are a fantastic way to see the island’s key highlights without the stress of planning everything yourself. Experience the cinematic landscapes of the Kualoa Ranch , feel the solemn history of Pearl Harbor , or perhaps, if you’re feeling adventurous, tour the rugged terrain of Diamond Head by hiking to its peak. Not only will you have a fun-filled day, but you’ll also learn about the island’s rich history and unique ecosystem from knowledgeable local guides. Remember, there’s an Oahu tour for every kind of traveler!

Exploring Oahu on Foot

The island is simply teeming with scenic walking trails, cozy neighborhood sidewalks, and bustling city streets that invite you to explore at your own pace. From the tranquil paths of Waimea Valley to the vibrant thrum of Honolulu’s downtown, there’s no shortage of sights to see. Feel the grainy sand between your toes as you stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach, or wander through the aromatic stalls of Chinatown ‘s open-air markets. Step back into history with in the serene beauty of the Byodo-In Temple . On foot, you’ll experience the pulse of the island, the warmth of its people, and the beating heart of its Aloha spirit. Remember to pack comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and be ready to surrender to the island’s magic.

Using Ride-sharing Apps

Surf’s up, but not sure how to get to the beach. No worries. Oahu is well-served by various ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft, making it super easy to zip around the island without breaking a sweat. It’s as simple as downloading the app, entering your location and your destination, and voila! You’re off to soak up the sun, explore the alluring landscapes, or head downtown for some shopping and shave ice. Remember, peak times may lead to surge pricing, so plan your rides accordingly.

General Travel Tips

Trip Planner: Best Time to Visit Honolulu, Hawaii

The first step in planning a trip to Hawaii is deciding when you will visit. While there is never a bad time to visit, in my opinion, it’s still a good idea to plan your stay in Hawaii to take advantage of as many positive factors as you can.

If you’re heading to Hawaii and need help planning, consult a travel professional to put together a Honolulu package that incorporates your wants and needs.

The best time to visit Hawaii is from mid-April to early June and from September to mid-December when the tourism crowds are thin and the weather is perfect – sunny and warm without being too hot. For a more economical experience and fewer crowds, plan a trip to Hawaii between April-September when the off-season is in effect.

High Season vs. Low Season Travel Considerations

High season in Oahu runs from mid-December through March or April, while low season falls between late spring through early fall.

  • High Season:  Expect higher prices and more crowds during winter vacations and humpback whale watching opportunities.
  • Low Season:  Enjoy discounted rates at hotels or vacation rentals and less foot traffic on the beaches.

Plan a Hawaii Vacation Around Weather Patterns Throughout the Year

  • Rainy Season:  November through March experiences more rainfall, but showers tend to be brief.
  • Dry Season:  April through October brings drier conditions, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
  • Hurricane Season:  Although rare, hurricane season officially runs from June until November, with September being the peak month for tropical cyclones.

Keep an eye on weather forecasts during hurricane season and consider purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellations due to natural disasters.

“Plan your dream trip to Honolulu, Hawaii. Save money and avoid crowds by traveling during the off-season. Don’t forget to check weather forecasts and consider travel insurance for hurricane season. #Honolulu #Hawaii #TravelTips” Click to Tweet

Choose Your Hawaiian Island Itinerary from Island Hopping Options Out of Honolulu

The second consideration you’ll want to make as you plan your vacation is which places to visit. Honolulu serves as a gateway to the rest of Hawaii’s islands, offering plenty of opportunities to island-hop with direct flights from Honolulu International Airport, so maybe one island just won’t be enough. The most popular Hawaii vacation destinations from here include Maui, Oahu, and Kauai.

If it’s your first trip, give yourself at least three nights per island as each offers unique experiences worth exploring. Whether you’re planning a trip to one or all, you’ll want to make reservations and vacation plans far in advance to coordinate with your stay in Honolulu.

A vacation on Oahu often starts with a Honolulu vacation package, particularly if it’s your first trip to Hawaii.

Exploring Maui’s Natural Beauty

This tropical paradise offers a getaway with an abundance of natural beauty, from lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls in East Maui along the famous Road to Hana ( Hana Highway) .

Tips for Planning a Trip by Booking Your Hawaiian Vacation Early

Booking your Hawaiian vacation in advance can save you money and ensure availability at hotels, rental cars, restaurants, and activities. Book your flights, accommodation, and activities early to avoid last-minute stress. By planning ahead, you can also take advantage of early bird discounts and mitigate higher costs.

Benefits of early booking

  • Better deals:  Plan ahead to take advantage of discounts on accommodations and activities.
  • Avoid disappointment:  Popular attractions like Pearl Harbor or whale watching tours sell out quickly, so reserve tickets early.
  • Favorable flight times:  Book flights with Hawaiian Airlines months before departure for more flexibility in choosing convenient schedules and better seat selections.

Renting a Car in Hawaii

Explore Hawaii’s beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and attractions at your own pace by renting a car the best way to see Hawaii, in our opinion. Understand that recently car rentals in Hawaii have become very expensive, but this need not affect your travel plans. Check out Craigslist for opportunities to rent from locals.

  • Flexibility:  Create your own itinerary and adjust it as needed.
  • Ease of Access:  Private vehicles are the best way to access popular attractions like the North Shore Oahu’s famous surf spots or Maui’s scenic Hana Highway.
  • Affordability:  A Hawaii rental car can be more cost-effective than booking guided tours for every activity on your Hawaiian vacation. Check out  Craigslist for affordable options.

Insurance Considerations

Save money by checking if your credit card offers primary Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) coverage when used to pay for the rental.

Before declining any offered insurance at the counter, verify with your credit card company that you have the necessary coverage.

Book a vacation car rental early, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and potentially better rates.

Consider booking an inter-island flight ahead of your arrival for seamless island hopping experiences.

Trip Planning: Choose Your Accommodations Wisely

When planning your Hawaiian vacation, pick accommodations that fit your budget and preferences on type and location. Honolulu offers a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets, from luxury resorts to budget hostels.

Types of Accommodations Available

Hotels, vacation rentals, and B&Bs are all great options depending on your needs.

  • Hotels:  Ideal for convenience and onsite amenities.
  • Vacation Rentals:  Perfect for families or groups seeking more space and privacy.
  • B&Bs:  A great option for personalized service and unique charm.

How Do I Plan My Trip If It’s My First Time in Hawaii?

Research Hawaiian islands’ unique offerings, decide on an itinerary based on interests and budget constraints, book flights and accommodations well in advance, reserve rental cars or tours if needed, learn about local culture, pack appropriately, and obtain travel insurance.

What Are the Steps I Take to Arrange My Honolulu Trip?

Choose which islands you’d like to visit, determine flight options that suit your schedule, secure lodging reservations (consider self-catering), pre-book any necessary transportation or activities such as guided tours or excursions.

How Much Time Should I Spend in Honolulu?

A minimum of three days is recommended for exploring Honolulu’s highlights including Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbor Memorial sites, and Diamond Head Crater hike. However, spending 5-7 days allows more leisurely exploration of other attractions around Oahu Island. Check out more things to do on Oahu Island.

Are 2 days enough for Honolulu?

You’ll likely have to prioritize your plans. Which attractions are most important to you?

Could you eliminate directly visiting Diamond Head, for example, and just enjoy the view from Waikiki Beach? Or perhaps you’d prefer not to visit Pearl Harbor this trip. Only you can decide what is most important.

Yes! It’s entirely possible to find and book vacation packages that include flight, hotel and car rental. This is a preferred way to book a vacation to Honolulu and the other islands for many visitors.

Is it worth going to Hawaii for 3 days?

Travel time should be a factor to consider if you have limited vacation time available. Generally speaking, you’ll burn through an entire day getting to Hawaii from the mainland United States. We’ve taken red-eye flights back to the mainland, but you’ll be pretty tired when you arrive back home!

PLAN A TRIP TO HONOLULU 1

How long should your trip to Hawaii be?

We suggest at least one week. If you plan your departure and arrival times to coincide with extra weekend days, you can stay one full week, which is often the amount of time resorts will require at booking. If you’re planning on visiting additional islands with short stays, plan for at least 3 days in each new location.

How much is food in Hawaii for a week?

This is one of those questions that is hard to answer, because it depends upon your individual preferences. Some people prefer fine dining, others are content with food trucks and casual diners. What you will definitely notice is that food prices are higher in restaurants and stores than on the mainland, as everything has to be brought in.

How to Plan the Perfect Multi-island Trip to Hawaii

These eight tips will help you travel between Hawaii's islands with ease.

Matt Anderson Photography/Getty Images

The Hawaiian archipelago includes more than 100 islands, atolls, and islets. But if you’re planning a visit, don’t worry, as you need not plot a 100-island itinerary. With the majority of the islands uninhabited and inaccessible, you can focus on four of the eight largest islands: Kauai , Oahu , Maui , and the Island of Hawaii (often referred to as the Big Island), with the option to add on a few others.

Here are some tips for planning an epic multi-island trip to Hawaii .

Determine travel dates and destinations.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Ideally, you should spend at least one week on each of the four islands. But if you don’t have a full month, plan for four to five days per island, then choose one or two regions within each.

Make a list of things you want to do in order of importance. This will help you determine where to base yourself on each island and what to eliminate if needed. For example, if sleeping near an active volcano and night snorkeling with manta rays are two activities topping your list, book a couple of nights at the historic Volcano House — the only lodging within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park — on the Hilo side of the Island of Hawaii and a few nights at Mauna Kea Resort or The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort on the Kona side, where you can join a guided small group night snorkel with Manta Ray Advocates .

Don’t forget to factor in flight and drive times. Although some islands appear small on the map, weather, road conditions, and traffic can impact overall travel time.

Also, consider when to go . Hawaii has microclimates, so weather can vary, but in general, summer is warm with minimal rainfall. This is ideal for beach lovers, but it’s also one of the peak travel times, with families visiting during summer break. Expect higher rates and larger crowds during this time, as well as the weeks surrounding major U.S. holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.

You may find lower rates and thinner crowds during the winter (with the exception of the holiday season), but the colder months are generally wetter, so if you’re traveling to Hawaii from November through March, be prepared for cooler temperatures, rain, and possible road closures and activity cancellations. The shoulder seasons from March to May (excluding spring break and Easter) and September to October tend to have comfortable weather conditions and slightly fewer crowds than peak seasons.

Identify your travel style.

Some travelers crave leisurely days at the beach, while others prefer an action-packed itinerary. Some gravitate toward lively, larger cities, while others enjoy slower-paced small towns . Discuss your expectations and interests with your travel companions so you can hone in on the regions, tours, and hotels best suited to you.

Do your research. I often hear visitors comment that Oahu is "too busy," yet they haven't ventured beyond Honolulu. Honolulu is the capital city and home to about one million people, so yes, it’s busy. Find an oasis amidst the chaos: With convenient locations, Espacio and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach are tranquil retreats in the city. Or, if you’re not interested in the urban experience at all, skip the capital and head elsewhere on Oahu .

You might be tempted to schedule every hour of your itinerary in order to make the most of your trip, but don’t overbook. Allow time for rest, and aim for balance, so you don't wind up exhausted. Follow an active day of touring with some leisure time or a spa treatment.

Plan your route.

Art Wager/Getty Images

Although you can start and end wherever you choose, it’s wise to look at flight schedules to plot an efficient route. Kauai is in the northwest, and the Island of Hawaii is in the southeast, so starting in Kauai and traveling southeast — to Oahu, Maui, and then the Island of Hawaii — makes sense logistically. It also provides variety, from the slower pace of Kauai to a mix of urban adventures and cruising the countryside on Oahu and Maui. You'll end with a bang on the Island of Hawaii, where you can feel the energy of volcanic activity. In this case, you’ll also be following the order in which the islands were formed, so it’s a great way to experience them from oldest to youngest and observe the geological evolution along the way.

When booking flights, consider multicity rather than a round-trip option. If you’ll be traveling the Kauai to the Island of Hawaii route suggested above, you can arrive in Kauai, book onward interisland flights to Oahu, Maui, and the Island of Hawaii, then depart from Kona. Keep in mind that some interisland flights are not direct and may require a stopover in Honolulu or Kahului, for example, so be sure to check before booking. You can often secure direct interisland flights by choosing one that departs earlier in the day.

Enlist the help of experts.

Alec Fuller /Getty Images

While you can travel around the islands on your own, we recommend booking some guided experiences. Native Hawaiian guides and cultural practitioners, in particular, offer personal stories and context that will give you an entirely different — and much richer — experience. Plus, by booking with Native Hawaiian experts, you’re supporting the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture.

Many hotels, like ‘Alohilani Resort and Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa on Oahu and Ka’anapali Beach Hotel on Maui, are increasingly providing complimentary, Native Hawaiian-led activities that include hula, Hawaiian language lessons, lei-making sessions, and sunrise ceremonies. Other properties, like Timbers and Kukui’ula on Kauai, offer farm tours to acquaint guests (and their taste buds) with the abundance of plants and produce grown there. Some hotels, including Halekulani , provide private tours or discounted or free entrance to local sites of significance such as Bishop Museum , Iolani Palace , and Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture, and Design . Be sure to ask about these offerings prior to booking your hotels.

When it comes to physical activities such as hiking, guided tours with reputable operators like Kauai Hiking Tours help ensure your safety. And in some cases, a guided tour can afford access to extraordinary places, like Hualalai crater, a sacred site located on private land that only two tour operators — Uluha'o O Hualalai and Hawaii Forest & Trail — have permission to reach. (For a beachside stay nearby, check out Four Seasons Resort Hualalai ).

Some expert-led trips from operators such as Kailani Tours can also help you maximize your time by bringing you to a variety of sites in one day, allowing you to enjoy the ride rather than worry about logistics and navigation.

Make reservations.

Westend61/Getty Images

Many popular places such as Hanauma Bay on Oahu now require reservations, and popular tours, including sunrise at Haleakalā on Maui and sunset at Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii, often sell out, so it’s best to book as far in advance as possible. Arnott’s Adventures offers sunset and stargazing tours from Hilo, and if you’re on the Kona side, check out Hawaii Forest & Trail’s Summit & Stars Give Back Experience .

You should also secure dinner reservations so you don’t miss out on your top choices or waste time waiting for a table. And don’t forget car rentals for each island, too; these do sell out and — with the exception of Honolulu, where shuttles, public buses, and ride-share options are available — it can be difficult and expensive to get around without your own wheels.

Pack your bags.

milan2099/Getty Images

One of the biggest mistakes people make when traveling to Hawaii is assuming it’s always sunny and warm. If you’re planning to visit multiple islands, you’ll likely encounter a variety of microclimates and changing weather conditions. Come prepared with layers and appropriate footwear for your activities, and always pack a rain jacket. And, of course, pack a Hawaiian shirt or two.

Bring binoculars, too, to get a better view of wildlife such as endemic birds and migrating whales, as well as dynamic landscapes. If you’re fortunate enough to witness volcanic activity, you’ll be happy to have these on hand for a close-up view of bubbling lava. Some tours do include outdoor gear and equipment; inquire when booking.

Consider additional islands.

John Elk/Getty Images

If you have time and want to add another island to your trip, there are a few options available to visitors. You can take the ferry from Maui to Lanai for a day trip or spend a night or two and sink into that relaxed island life.

If you’re interested in visiting Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai, allow a few extra days. Keep in mind that flights to Molokai are limited, and as the island is home to vulnerable kupuna (elderly people), it's slowly reopening to visitors since the pandemic started.

If you prefer a private tour to a neighboring island, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea can charter a yacht or helicopter from Maui to Lanai or Molokai.

Although you’re not permitted to step ashore on Ni'ihau, the “Forbidden Island,” without an invitation, you can snorkel the waters nearby on a Holo Holo Charters Super Tour .

Travel with aloha.

rebelml/Getty Images

For you, Hawaii may be a dream destination. For those who live here, it's home and, for many, sacred. Travel with respect : Stay on marked trails, don’t enter private property, obey warnings (from posted signs, lifeguards, and law enforcement), and be mindful that the environment is fragile and the land has cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance.

Be flexible, too. Don’t be attached to a particular expectation or activity. Sometimes, plans change due to weather (like that time I flew to Kauai to see the famed cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast and colors of Waimea Canyon, only to find it all covered in clouds and fog). If you’re lucky enough to visit Hawaii, embrace the unexpected, stay present, and aim to enjoy the experience — rain or shine.

FY 2024 per diem highlights

We establish the per diem rates for the continental United States (CONUS), which includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. Federal agencies use the per diem rates to reimburse their employees for subsistence expenses incurred while on official travel.

Federal per diem rates consist of a maximum lodging allowance component and a meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) component. Most of CONUS (approximately 2,600 counties) is covered by the standard rate of $166 ($107 lodging, $59 M&IE). In fiscal year (FY) 2024, there are 302 non-standard areas (NSAs) that have per diem rates higher than the standard rate.

Since FY 2005, we have based the maximum lodging allowances on average daily rate (ADR) data. ADR is a widely accepted lodging industry measure derived from a property's room rental revenue divided by the number of rooms rented. This calculation provides us with the average rate in an area. For more information about how lodging per diem rates are determined, visit Factors Influencing Lodging Rates .

We remind agencies that the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) allows for actual expense reimbursement when per diem rates are insufficient to meet necessary expenses. Please see FTR § § 301-11.300 through 11.306 for more information.

FY 2024 results

The standard CONUS lodging rate will increase from $98 to $107. All current NSAs will have lodging rates at or above FY 2023 rates. The M&IE per diem tiers for FY 2024 are unchanged at $59-$79, with the standard M&IE rate unchanged at $59.

There are two new NSA locations this year:

  • Huntsville, AL (Madison County)
  • Charles Town, WV (Jefferson County)

The following locations that were NSAs (or part of an established NSA) in FY 2023 will move into the standard CONUS rate category:

  • Hammond / Munster / Merrillville, IN (Lake County)
  • Wichita, KS (Sedgwick County)
  • Baton Rouge, LA (East Baton Rouge Parish)
  • Baltimore County, MD
  • Frederick, MD (Frederick County)
  • East Lansing / Lansing, MI (Ingham and Eaton Counties)
  • Kalamazoo / Battle Creek, MI (Kalamazoo and Calhoun Counties)
  • Eagan/ Burnsville / Mendota Heights, MN (Dakota County)
  • Akron, OH (Summit County)
  • Wooster, OH (Wayne County)
  • Erie, PA (Erie County)
  • Corpus Christi, TX (Nueces County)
  • Round Rock, TX (Williamson County)
  • Appleton, WI (Outagamie County)
  • Brookfield / Racine, WI (Waukesha and Racine Counties)
  • Morgantown, WV (Monongalia County)

No results could be found for the location you've entered.

Rates for Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. Territories and Possessions are set by the Department of Defense .

Rates for foreign countries are set by the State Department .

2 Choose a date

Rates are available between 10/1/2021 and 09/30/2024.

The End Date of your trip can not occur before the Start Date.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.
