Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect on a polar express train ride.

Although run by different railway lines across the country, all the experiences are very similar in format and of course are designed to bring The Polar Express story to life!

Expect to spend around an hour onboard your train, riding along one of the UK’s iconic rail routes whilst you enjoy a completely immersive festive entertainment experience, designed with the whole family in mind.

You’ll enjoy all the movie highlights:  From the grand arrival of the train itself to meeting the conductor and plenty of singing and games.  Not to mention hot chocolate and cookies for all, delivered by the dancing chefs.  There might even be a reading of Chris Van Allsburg’s classic book to make sure everyone knows the story before you pull into the North Pole.

And of course you’ll get a visit from the main man himself as Santa hops aboard to say hello!  What’s more, everyone leaves with a gift of their very own Polar Express silver sleigh bell so you can be sure to keep the magic alive long after your adventure has finished.

What is the story of The Polar Express?

Written and illustrated by American author Chris Van Allsburg in 1985, The Polar Express is the festive story of a young boy’s train journey to the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

With nothing except the pyjamas he’s wearing, the boy travels north on the train along with a host of other children.  Upon arrival in the North Pole, they join the throngs of Christmas elves waiting to cheer Santa on his way.  When the young boy is selected by Santa to receive the first gift of Christmas, he chooses a bell from one of the reindeer’s harnesses – a very special bell that only makes a sound for those that truly believe.

Disaster strikes on the way home as the bell is lost through a hole in the boy’s pocket.  But, by the magic of Christmas, perhaps it will find its way back to its new owner even so?!

The book was already a Christmas classic, particularly in the US.  However the 2004 animated movie (20 years ago already!!), starring Tom Hanks as The Polar Express train conductor, introduced the tale to a plethora of new global fans and cemented its place in the Christmas story hall of fame!

With such a simple heart-warming festive tale, it’s easy to see why a real Polar Express Train Ride would be so full of wonder and create such magical memories, particularly for the little ones in the family!

How long is The Polar Express Train Ride?

Again allow for some local variation but all say that the overall experience is around 90 minutes long, with 60mins of that onboard the train.

Almost all locations offer some additional activities, facilities and shopping at the station.  So the overall time will depend on how long your party decide to take enjoying these as well of course as the parking and check-in process.  Some locations run a park-and-ride service and so there may be a little time needed for shuttle trips to the train as well.

Which Polar Express Train Ride is the best?

All the train rides listed on this page are official Polar Express Train Rides, hosted in conjunction with a company called Rail Events International.

Therefore all follow a similar format which is closely aligned to the original story and licenced to use all branding and characters from the book and movie.

There are some local variations, particularly with the actual train used and of course the route taken (for example the Seaton Polar Express takes place on a classic tramcar rather than a train).

The activities on offer before and after the train ride may vary somewhat too (with some venues hosting pre-shows – enquire directly for details).

However each venue has created an immerse Christmas experience which fits well with the Polar Express tale and we’re sure that all will provide wonderful festive memories for the whole family.  Perhaps a Polar Express Train Ride will become an annual tradition for you and yours (maybe it is already?!)!

If you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a Polar Express Train Ride in more than one location, we’d love to know how you thought they compared!

What’s the best age for the train ride?

Polar Express Train Rides are designed for the whole family, from 0-100 and beyond!

You know your children and your family best and know when they will get the most from the occasion.  In our experience children aged four and over have a greater chance of remembering the occasion and are more engaged in Christmas general and all its wonder!  That being said little ones will no doubt love the sensory experience and under 2s can sit on an adult’s lap for a nominal charge.

Common Sense Media suggests 6+ for The Polar Express movie . And we would concur – both my boys were a little scared the first time they watched the movie. So if your children are worried about some of the more exhilarating parts of the story’s journey or characters they might meet, then waiting until they are that little bit older might help.   (You could always enjoy a traditional Santa Train Ride in the meantime.)

Tip : To make for the most magical atmosphere and best enjoyment of the light displays, try to book a Polar Express Train Ride after dark if you can (unless you have tiny ones that would be too tired to enjoy those later timeslots.)

Do I have to know The Polar Express story to enjoy the train ride?

Not at all.  A festive themed train ride is bound to make for a wonderful Christmas family day out whether you know the story or not!  And the train ride typically include a retelling of the story anyway.

However, why not make the most of the experience and enjoy either the book, the movie or both before you go?

Get your copy of the book , rent the movie or buy the DVD at the links here.

Do I really have to wear pyjamas?

Of course you don’t have to!  But expect plenty of your fellow passengers to be embracing the story completely so why not get your comfies on!  Surely it’s the perfect excuse to shop for some matching family PJs..?

If you really don’t want to go down the Christmas pyjama route, perhaps opt for a Christmas jumper instead.  The Polar Express Train Ride is no place for Grinches!

Tip : There will be some time spent outdoors on platforms so it’s worth considering a size up on the pyjamas so you can fit an extra layer or two underneath for warmth.  The bonus of this approach is that the children’s pyjamas may last another year and you’ve got more room for your Christmas dinner on the 25 th !!

How much is The Polar Express Train Ride?

Prices vary considerably depending on ticket type and location.  However expect to pay from around £27 per person for a standard off-peak ticket up to around £60 per person for a premium time at a peak date and time in some locations.  Children and adults are priced the same.

Babies can be seated on laps for a nominal charge and, depending on location, may still receive their silver sleigh bell gift and snack.

There are two types of ticket available for most locations: standard and premium.  All ticket types include hot chocolate, cookie and silver sleigh bell gift.  Premium ticket holders also receive souvenir mugs for each passenger (cannot be purchased separately).

Standard and premium ticket holders are seated in different carriages so groups with mixed booking types will not be seated together.

How do I book?

Details for booking tickets are included below for each of the UK Polar Express Train Ride locations .  Tickets must be purchased online and in advance.

Tickets are posted out ahead of the booking and include the special golden train tickets to bring on board!

Many of the locations routinely sell out all their Polar Express Train Rides so we would strongly suggest signing up for a newsletter or following social media accounts to be kept up to date when tickets go on sale.  And be sure to book early to avoid disappointment!

What should I take with me?

In addition to your Christmas pyjamas or jumper, you might like to don a dressing gown, Christmas beanie and thick cosy socks too.  Much as it would be tempting to wear fluffy festive slippers as well, these would likely get ruined on damp mucky platforms.  So proper shoes are the way to go.

In terms of other things to bring along:

  • Tickets of course, including your special golden Polar Express tickets!
  • Camera, battery & memory cards and/or fully charged phone with booster pack. Batteries run down more quickly in cold weather and it would be such a shame to miss out on capturing the occasion!
  • Your own copy of The Polar Express to read along on board ( buy a copy here ). If you’re on the nice list, Father Christmas* might even sign it for you when he passes through the carriage!
  • Cash or card for extra treats at the Polar Express store at the station upon your return (and maybe a non-transparent bag with a zip in case you want to sneak something home unnoticed!)

*on some trains, the Conductor is the book signer rather than Santa himself.

Can I find Polar Express Train Rides elsewhere in the world?

Yes!  At the time of preparing this article there were forty locations across the USA and Canada at which you can enjoy an official Polar Express train ride.

Do you Believe? Well, if you don't, by the end of your journey, you absolutely will! Join our enthusiastic cast in telling the story whilst singing along with your favourite characters from the hit film.

All our passengers are encouraged to join in the fun by attending in your PJ’s, but don’t forget your dressing gown in case it's cold at the North Pole!

Once you have boarded THE POLAR EXPRESS™ the adventure begins when you are served Hot Chocolate and a Cookie at your seat by the singing Chefs. Make sure you have your tickets ready as the Conductor will need to see them. Once he is finished punching tickets, he will be back to show off his impressive dance moves.

And believers, we have a secret on this train… The Hobo is travelling with you! He’ll show you his meaning of Christmas and the word Believe, and you’ll most likely end up making a new friend by the end of the journey. Just don’t slip now...

Travelling through the Northern Lights is arguably one of the most spectacular parts of our journey and the icing on the cake before you arrive at the North Pole.

Santa will be waiting patiently for the arrival of THE POLAR EXPRESS™ where he will meet all believers ready to hand out the first present of Christmas – a beautiful silver bell from his sleigh.

If you purchased The Polar Express book at the time of booking, Santa might sign his autograph for you if you ask him nicely.

When the train returns to Froghall, why not take the opportunity to write a letter to Santa? You can never be too sure about being on the nice list!

Pending Payment and No Confirmation Email

Unless you have gone through the entire booking process and reached the screen which says Payment Successful then we do not have your booking.

This is down to our fraud protection systems.

We have a security setting in our checkout that asks our payment provider Braintree to decline payments where the CVC check fails, or where the post code check fails. If your bank approves a payment where the check has failed, Braintree declines the payment at our end.

In summary, your bank has said the transaction is OK, our payment system said, no it’s not (based upon a set of rules in place to protect us, their customer), so the payment was not taken. You are seeing your banks approval, not a payment. Hence why is it ‘pending’. The pending charge will disappear shortly if it has not already.

The tickets you tried to purchase are not saved for you. You will need to make a new order and a new payment to secure your tickets.

Frequently Asked Questions

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride is a magical re-creation of the classic children’s story on board a real train or tram. Passengers are served hot chocolate and a treat by dancing chefs, enjoy a reading of the book by Chris Van Allsburg and receive the First Gift of Christmas (a silver sleigh bell) after Santa boards the train to greet families. Attendants lead passengers in caroling and fun holiday activities on the return trip.

Tickets for each location are sold by the individual host venues and links to each website can be found by visiting our  Locations Page . Each event location is independently operated via a license from Rail Events International and is responsible for their own customer service and ticketing support.

Once tickets are on sale at the location of your choice, it is recommended that reservations are made as soon as your group knows which date and time you would like to attend. Tickets often sell out quickly for this popular event.

Families are encouraged to wear warm pyjamas just like passengers from the book and film. Passengers may spend time on an unheated platform as they board and disembark from the train, so appropriate winter attire is also recommended.

Trip lengths vary by location but are generally no less than 60 minutes and no longer than 75 minutes per round trip. The entire experience is generally around two hours in length including parking, check-in, boarding and the train trip.

Yes. Santa will make an appearance on board the train and visit briefly with each group of passengers. There may also be photo opportunities with Santa. Please inquire at participating venues for more information on their specific Santa experience.

No. Although many host venues in the UK do feature a steam locomotive, equipment varies by location and some venues may utilize diesel locomotives or trams. Please inquire directly with the location you are interested in attending for full information on train power and equipment.

Accessibility may vary by location. Please contact the venue you are interested in attending to learn more about accessibility for guests in wheelchairs and with other disabilities.

Polar Express Kent

Are you a Doubter? Have you been bamboozled, railroaded? Is your belief in the Big Man himself fading away? You need to book tickets for Polar Express Kent! The magical journey of a lifetime, all you Doubters will be transformed into Believers before the train ride is through. From the first steam whistle to the final ring of the bell, each moment of the trip will be filled with wonder. Whether you are bringing the children, grandchildren or just yourselves to experience the wonder of THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride, there’s a little taste of Christmas magic for everyone.

How do I get tickets for Polar Express Kent?

Tickets can be found at our website, https://spavalleythepolarexpressride.com . Prices and availability can be found at https://spavalleythepolarexpressride.com/availability . We offer Premium and Standard tickets, located in their own carriages. The experience is broadly the same across both Premium and Standard carriages, the primary difference being the centrally located boarding for Premium as well as a free exclusive mug for each member of your party (aged 2+ or with their own seat).

Is Polar Express Kent accessible?

As with all THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Rides, the carriages we use are heritage railway carriages. As such, they have much narrower doorways than modern trains and therefore will sadly be unable to accommodate wheelchair access. However, if you are mobile enough to be able to walk the short distance and step between platform and carriage, or are able to have assistance to do so, you can request end of carriage seats which will minimise travel distance and we can arrange for your wheelchair to be transported to the departure location. For those passengers who receive HIGHER RATE DLA or PIP, we offer a 50% discount on a carer ticket to help enable those who need a carer to attend the experience. We also offer autism-friendly train rides, where the noise and light levels are altered to a more manageable level and the staff can take any needs of the passengers into account.

What to expect from Polar Express

Arrive between 30-45 minutes before your scheduled departure time to ensure you have time to look around the site. Please do not arrive any earlier, as you will be unable to access the site. There will be opportunities to buy Polar Express merch to take with you on the train, as well as food and drink opportunities. Please note you aren’t allowed to take this, or other external food and drink, with you on the train. When the train is about to leave the station the friendly chefs will welcome you aboard and help you find your seats. The Conductor will introduce himself and then we will leave on our magical journey to the North Pole. You’ll be entertained with singing, dancing and all manner of shenanigans on the journey, before meeting a very special vistor – Mr C himself, aboard the Polar Express to meet you all. After your family has met Santa, we head back home, full of the magic of Christmas. Extend your experience by visiting Santa’s Workshop, where you can visit our gift shop as well as let off some steam according to the Christmas Spirit.

Do I have to wear pyjamas to the Polar Express?

Although all the guests of the Polar Express in the film wear their pyjamas, it is not mandatory to wear your pyjamas for the Polar Express Kent. However, should you choose to do so we can guarantee you won’t be alone! Most of our passengers get into the Christmas spirit, with everything from matching family pyjamas to Christmas onesies and light up jumpers.

Where to stay for the Polar Express Kent

The address of the experience is West Station , Tunbridge Wells , TN2 5QY . There is no hotel attached to the event, but particularly if you are on a later train you may well wish to make a weekend out of your wondrous train ride. We recommend booking in advance, as we anticipate that at peak times it will be difficult to find local accomodation. Your family may well be worn out by all the excitement! Make sure you have a pair of offical Polar Express Pyjamas to really make the most of your night’s holiday.

Do I need to watch the film?

The Polar Express film (2004) is the basis for most of the Polar Magic on board the train. However, as the train ride takes you through the major events of the film you do not have to have watched the film to fully experience the train ride. For those of you who are major film fans, though, you’ll notice some special easter eggs put in just for you – have a look in the vents above the seating to see if you can spot Hero Girl’s missing tickets. Plus, if the carriage suddenly gets cold, and you start seeing things the chef can’t – a familiar face might be nearby, checking whether you’re a Doubter or a True Believer!

If you’re more of a book fan than a film fan, why not get your copy of POLAR EXPRESS with your tickets? An absolutely stunning picture book, it will take you through the adventures you’ll have on board the train over and over again. If you have your own copy, make sure to bring it along with you for the train ride – for a section of the journey, you’ll be treated to a narrated look through the book itself, where you can follow along with your own copy. Plus, when meeting Father Christmas, if you ask he might even autograph the book for you as a lasting memento of your trip.

The Polar Express Kent is a brand new immersive theatrical experience on board a heritage steam train, launching for the very first time in 2021. Don’t miss out – book your tickets today!

Before your journey begins, you will probably have lots of questions, most of which will be answered on the website FAQs, but here are just a few of the popular questions that we can answer.

How Do I Book Polar Express Tickets ?

Tickets must be booked in advance, you can only book them online, not in person or over the telephone, and you are not able to purchase tickets on the day.

Adult tickets are for 18 and over, a child is aged 2 years to 17 years and babies under 2 years can travel for a small charge of £3 but must be held on an adult’s lap at all times when on the train.

You will need to book an “adult with baby” ticket. Each baby will receive a silver bell from Santa.

Do I Have To Book Polar Express Tickets in Advance ?

You are unable to purchase Polar Express tickets on the day you wish to travel, all tickets are sold online, you cannot order in person or over the telephone, they must be purchased in advance and they will be sent to you in the post.

What Age is Best for The Polar Express Train Rides ?

The Polar Express advertises from 0 -100 but realistically the young children will love the atmosphere and the lights, the motion may well send them to sleep!

But it depends on the individual person, you know your children, after speaking with mine they have vivid memories of things that happened when they were abut 4 years old.

So in terms of making memories that they will remember when they are older, this seems like the age they start to store them, and there is no upper age limit, because the joy of watching your child or grandchild cannot ever be beaten.

Which Polar express Train Ride is the Best?

All of the Polar express train rides follow the same format but they are all quite different experiences, with three new ones added to the timetable this year, it will be interesting to see how they all compare, but whichever you visit will be a magical journey for the entire family.

How much is the Polar express Train Ride?

Prices vary for each experience depending on which type of seating you choose and what date, prices tend to start off at approximately £25 per person for a standard seating and at the earliest date.

How Do I Receive my Polar Express Tickets ?

The Polar Express tickets are sent direct to your home address, two weeks before the event.

How Do I Prepare For A Polar Express Experience ?

All members of the party are encouraged to wear pyjamas, although not essential, it does add to the magic of the experience, but it will be quite cold, so make sure they’re warm PJs and make sure you wear sensible, closed in footwear, slippers wouldn’t be a good idea! If you don’t fancy pyjamas, you could always wear a Christmas jumper.

Watching The Polar Express before the train ride is not required but it will make the day a little bit more real, and you may want to take the story with you to read along with the conductor.

Don’t forget your A4 paper ticket with details of your carriage and seat numbers, and you will also need your golden tickets on board THE POLAR EXPRESS™ so don’t forget those.

And don’t forget your phone or camera to capture unforgettable memories.

How many are allowed in a carriage..? As there is myself and Granddaughter aged 9

the website states “Our carriages have seating arranged in 4’s around a table or in pairs. Due to the high demand for tickets, it is likely you will be sharing the fun of your Polar Express trip with another family. Parties of over 4 will be seated as near to each other as possible, priority given to earliest booking.” hope that helps

Are you ever going to have a polar express experience in south wales, i would love to take the kids but all the area’s are too far away

I agree, they definitely need to offer one somewhere in Wales and Scotland too, hopefully the fact they have added new ones this year, its very popular, so maybe they will look to expand x

When will the tickets go on sale for Birmingham

There doesn’t look to be a Birmingham one this year, instead the nearest is the Staffordshire one.

Where is nearest to South Wales? Newport

Unfortunately they don’t have any Polar express trains in wales, i’m hoping they will expand as they have added three new ones this year, you could check out my Santa Trains post for other suggestions https://bigfamilylittleadventures.co.uk/santa-trains/

Are the trains wheelchair friendly? as my little girl has cerebral palsy

depending on which Polar express you are planning to visit, click on the one you wish to go to, then top right corner go to menu and FAQs they will be able to tell you if it is wheelchair friendly and all the accessible questions, hope that helps x

There are 10 of us in the party and the nearest one is in wallingford so would like to b together is that possible. What does the premium ticket include what extras do u get for that. It sounds a lovely experience is it as good as it sounds Also is there a nearer one we live in Sandhurst berks. Thank you x

Hi if you click on the link to the one you are interested in going on, then click the Menu top right corner and go to FAQs they should have all the answers to your questions, hope you have a lovely time.

Hello the Birmingham one is saying TBC to be confirmed is it going ahead form moor street this year please ?

There doesn’t look to be a Birmingham one this year, instead the nearest is the Staffordshire one.

Can you inform me when tickets for 2022 go on sale please as I left it too late to book this years seats thank you.

They do sell out pretty quickly! Best thing to do is to sign up to the emails of the Polar Express you’d like to go on, as they send out reminders when the bookings open

Hi it says you are on the train for 1 hour. Is this one hour straight or is there a break where you get off and back on . Thank you

Each of the Polar Express adventures is slightly different, click on the one you’d like to visit and in the top right corner of their website there are FAQs, these should give you further information.
