About "Horizons"

World-renowned physicist Professor Brian Cox brings his immersive live experience, "Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey," to North America.

"Horizons" takes us on a dazzling cinematic journey. A story of how we came to be and what we can become.

The deepest of questions will be explored using the latest advances in our understanding of quantum theory, black holes, biology, planetary science, astronomy and cosmology. Using state-of-the-art LED screen technology, venues will be filled with images of far-away galaxies, alien worlds, supermassive black holes and a time before the Big Bang.

"Horizons" is a celebration of our civilization, of our music, art, philosophy and science; an optimistic vision of our future if we continue to explore Nature with humility and to value ourselves and our fellow human beings. Brian will once again be joined by co-host of The Infinite Monkey Cage and award-winning comedian Robin Ince, perhaps the only collection of sentient atoms in the observable Universe capable of overseeing a Q&A with an audience of 10,000 people while wearing an old cardigan.

Wonderful seats, great venue

Everything was perfect! Grate seats and venue for a wonderful lecture.

A Bright Future

It is always enlightening to listen to Brian’s interpretations of the cosmos. It was especially entertaining seeing him in real life. Thank you Brian for bringing your lecture to Texas. With all the depressing news in our world today Brian paints a beautiful bright future of discovery. Looking forward to your next visit.

A bit smarty smarty but fun comic relief in between the brain twisters of info Not being a mathematician, the equations Will a bit of a stretch for me but the black hole and space info was really really cool Great graphics and totally entertaining

I've watched numerous documentaries featuring Professor Cox and find him an amazing communicator and socializer of scientific principles! This presentation was no different! The visuals, and his interaction with them, helped paint vivid images in support of his topics! I find black holes terribly interesting! I respect Professor Cox so much because he never presents scientific theories as simply facts that we all must accept! Rather, he presents the theory like this, "We think that...., but we're not sure." This builds my confidence in him and the points he's conveying! TOTAL and 100% respect for the man! Would love to have been able to meet him to tell him this personally!

Great visuals!

Clear and easy to understand explanations of complex theories.

Huge fan of Prof Cox, but…

We left during intermission. This is a true lecture that simply isn’t for the general crowd. Maybe not a university level lecture but very far from the interesting tv show type presentations prof Cox is loved for, and what everyone knows him for. Robin Ince joined 25 min in to wake up the crowd with some much needed humor. Still a huge fan of prof Cox and I’m happy I got to see him but I think this show needs to be lightened up a bit.

Never stop learning

Brian Cox filled the talk with many updates on the universe, and black holes. As always he delivers in language we can understand, the images displayed were tremendously well done, and the evening was a complete success!

Excellent presentation

Saw show in Dallas. Excellent presentation. Super well attended by a complete cross section of people. Asked if there were any Mathmeticians or Biologists in the crowd. None! But did not ask about Chemists?! What?! Very well done! Cheers

Thought Provoking.

This lecture really opened up my mind to new possiblity in theoretical physics.

Outstanding “Show”

With the graphics and videos it was much more than a lecture. Professor Cox has a great way of explaining very advanced theory in layman’s terms so the entire audience can understand. I’ve read all of his books, and will attend other events! Very entertaining and informative!

What is reality, really? Brian Cox's 'Horizons' tour probes the mysteries of the universe

Are space and time really as fundamental as we perceive them to be?

Brian Cox as seen during a speaking event in May 2022.

Brian Cox would like you to consider the very nature of the space-time continuum and our place within it.

That might seem like a big lift, so the world-renowned physicist is here to walk you through it. Cox is currently touring the U.S., bringing audiences a dazzling show filled with not only stunning images of the universe and simulated black holes but also big questions: Why are we here? How did life evolve? Are space and time really as fundamental as we perceive them to be?

In the show, called "Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey," Cox asks these questions and leads audiences on a journey in answering them, from past discoveries by Albert Einstein to current research that's changing our very understanding of reality.

Related: Time might not exist, according to physicists and philosophers — but that's okay

In the field of theoretical physics, Cox told Space.com, "We are being led now, in the last few years, to a theory which suggests that space and time are not fundamental — that there's some deeper structure."

This concept, known as "emergent space-time," is the idea that space and time are not fixed, unchanging things but rather made up of constituent parts, like how the atom comprises neutrons, protons and electrons (and those particles are made up of even more particles). The theory suggests that there are even more layers of the universe to peel back.

One way scientists are studying the idea of emergent space-time is through black holes, Cox said. Black holes pose many conundrums, such as "these things from which nothing can escape apparently have a temperature and glow and evaporate and radiate away," Cox said.

Get the Space.com Newsletter

One question plaguing physicists right now seems simple enough: " Do black holes destroy information ?" Cox said. But actually thinking about the question is not simple at all. The problem deals with the idea of Hawking radiation . This theory, first described by Stephen Hawking in the 1970s, suggests that black holes have a measurable temperature. Where does this temperature come from? Basically, imagine two particles that share information between them; one falls into the black hole, and one does not. The particle that falls into the black hole is destroyed with a burst of radiation.

However, these two particles are entangled, according to quantum entanglement theory; two particles share information even if they're millions of light-years apart. So, if one particle is destroyed, what happens to its twin? In the quantum world, information cannot be destroyed. So we're left with a paradox.

And that's just one of the many mysteries about the universe and our place within it. Cox wants audiences to walk away with a sense of awe — at the complexities of the universe, the discoveries humans have made since we first turned our eyes to the sky and how humanity fits into it all.

"The more we learn about biology and the evolutionary history of life on Earth , the more it starts to look like, whilst microbes might be all over the place, things like [civilizations] might be very rare indeed," he said.

— Was Einstein wrong? The case against space-time theory — The 'twin paradox' shows us what it really means for time to be relative — 4 bizarre Stephen Hawking theories that turned out to be right (and 6 we're not sure about)

In other words, we might be the only beings in our galaxy — or at least our corner of it — who have the ability to think about the big questions like the nature of reality, and we shouldn't take that for granted.

"Science has both relegated us from the center of the universe for the last 300 or 400 years, and also, perhaps, placed us in an extremely important position," Cox said.

As a life long Astronomy nut this presentation was just magical. Eye opening, factual, mind boggling and affirming all at once :)

Out of this world!

The show was absolutely magnificent. A great combination of nerdy and British humour along with fascinating details about the universe. Brian is able to communicate complex topics in simple language. For me, his show is up there, if not better, than live performances I have seen by Lauren Hill, The Black Keys, and U2 (and their shows were phenomenal!)

CoVid Protocols?

The presentation was great as always but I was somewhat confused by the failure to follow your stated CoVid protocols. As demonstrated by the absence of ½ of the presenting duo, due to close contact quarantine, the pandemic is not over. Several of the communications I received from the venue stated that a proof of vaccination was required to enter yet when I arrived no one was checked. Very disappointing. Like Professor Cox (stated during the performance) I don't want CoVid either so I'll have to reassess the risk of any future attendance due to the failure of the Jube to have any form of Pandemic protections.

Brilliant show, brilliant man Brian Cox is.

Very interesting show, Brian explains the universe and black holes to the regular person. Quite a moving show.

Out of This World!

We have been fans of Professor Brian Cox for many years and have watched his programs on BBC Earth, Discovery, and Smithsonian channels. His vast knowledge and enthusiasm make him such an interesting person to listen to. His in person presentation, with the huge LED screen and photographs from the cosmos, was truly amazing! An excellent evening of learning and entertainment!

such a pleasure to see Dr Brian Cox in person. He explained Black Holes, the universe, and space/time with humour, in a language that was understandable to the non-scientists in the audience. He shared his excitement in new discoveries and excited us. I often watch him on TV - but this was the best presentation I have gone to in a long time.

Excellent lecture but an uncomfortable venue.

An excellent lecture; full of Professor Brian Cox's excellent sense of humor and engaging style while explaining astrophysics and the relation to quantum mechanics all with great visuals, music and a little comedic interjection by Robin Innes could not make up for the unpleasant venue. Zero airflow and no mechanical ventilation up in the balcony, accompanied with mediocre seating, left us very uncomfortable (judging from the complaints of our neighbors we were not alone). The sound up there wasn't very good, either but we did have great sightlines. Friends seated on the floor did not report the same lack of ventilation, and said the sound was fine. (got to step up and get tickets early, night time!)

Black hole madness

Brian Cox was amazing he blew my mind the tiny seats at the theatre blew my knees and back! I wish I could see it all over again as I lost out on the experience because of being in much distress physically. Overall though the parts I was able to focus on was educational, fun, and at times very funny I would recommend anyone under 5’7” going to see him at that location! Greg

absolutely great

I enjoyed every moment - did I understand all of it - no - but his passion - sense of humour - and realness has always inspired me Can hardly wait to see him again - I also enjoyed his partner ... wonderful sense of humour and realness - just wonderful - The crowd was good and the ambiance is wonderful Thanks so much

Absolutely fabulous.

Informative and interesting speaker. Up to date on current scientific events, the visual show was amazing. Brian has a wonderful sense of humour, he had the theatre in stitches. The venue was perfect. Thanks to everyone for a great show.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night, review: Brian Cox’s return to stage is a slow-burn marvel

T hough he played JS Bach briefly at the Theatre Royal Bath last autumn, it has been 10 years since Brian Cox trod the boards in London. In that time, of course, he has supercharged his fame thanks to Logan Roy, the brooding media mogul at the heart of the dynastic corporate saga Succession.

In what might almost be a calculated choice for fans, Eugene O’Neill’s 1941 autobiographical masterpiece - posthumously published in 1956 – sees Cox play one of the mightiest father figures in the 20th century American canon. James Tyrone is the ageing actor whose twilight years, circa 1912, are anything but tranquil; he’s confronted by a long-suffering, newly morphine-addled wife, Mary, and two grown-up sons, Jamie and Edmund, who have yet to find their place in the world.

As a domineering, intemperate patriarch who has tightly controlled the purse-strings, the parallels with Succession are plain but the points of divergence are clear. Tyrone is a warmer character, aware of his fallibility; and whereas on screen Cox’s forte was forbidding impassivity, this verbose, confined epic calls for vocal clout and physical heft.

This he has. But in Jeremy Herrin’s starkly unadorned, straightforwardly unshowy production (which runs to three and a half hours, including interval) initially not even Cox’s declamatory poise can dispel a grinding sense of circular conversation and old-fashioned exposition.

Daryl McCormack, as Jamie, and Laurie Kynaston, as Edmund, are restive, resentful counterpoints to his careworn kindliness and tested patience; but it’s hard to care about their gripes quite as much as they do.

Yet as more information slips out – about Edmund’s consumptive condition, a long-ago parental tragedy, and Mary’s furtive return to the morphine dependency they had hoped she escaped – it’s as if the repetitive nature of the dialogue becomes a compulsive scratching at the deepest wounds, with pain oozing in all directions. Crucially, the terrific American actress Patricia Clarkson as the stricken matriarch generates an increasingly hypnotic force of unstable energy which each of the men, in their own way, must battle to work around.

Tilting between casual impulse and concerted intention, her bouts of dreamy withdrawal and swings from cruelty to kindness become a rolling statement of psychological distress. There’s something amusing about her tactless asides of regret and complaint – but in his plaintiveness and eloquent crestfallen sorrow, Cox, 77, registers the raw marital hurt.

The first-half has its flashes of sunlight; the darkening second half details the walls infernally closing in. Those who know about Cox’s own tough upbringing will intuit how close to home all this may be for him, but he is fully immersed in the role, conducting whisky-fuelled arias and fighting the phantoms of might-have-beens, as the mood turns lyrical (Kynaston coming into his own splendidly too).

As fog swirls like incense, and bells toll, Clarkson’s hauntingly ethereal Mary regresses into her vanished youth and lost hopes. A riveting period portrait - and a heart-rending mirror of forsaken souls in which we may all glimpse our own familial griefs. Recommended.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

professor brian cox tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
