In the beginning, Puncak Pass, or more popularly known as Puncak, is a mountain pass connecting Jakarta and Bandung, passing through Bogor and Cianjur regencies, via areas such as Cisarua, Ciawi, Megamendung, and Cipanas. They are all connected by Jalan Raya Puncak.

Puncak is located on the ridge of mount Gede Pangrango. The mountain is one of the popular national parks in Indonesia and one of the entrance to climb mount Gede Pangrango is situated inside Cibodas botanical garden. 

Now you can imagine the road to Puncak Pass is going up until it reaches its highest point near At-Ta'awun mosque and Puncak Pass resort. The surrounding area here is a beautiful highland covered with tea plantation and often shrouded in mist. Although parking is limited, if we are lucky to find a parking spot on the road side, we could enjoy the panorama a bit longer. There are several kiosks selling grilled corn, instant noodles, and coffees. Sometimes we can see people do paragliding from the top of the tea plantation.

Cool weather and great view of Puncak Pass lure many people,  especially from Jakarta, to spend many weekends and holidays here.  Hence, over the years it becomes the number one holiday destination in the land of Sunda.

Puncak (literally Peak or Summit ) or the Puncak Pass is a mountain pass in the Bogor Raya region of Western Java, Indonesia. The designation 'Puncak' is also used for the wider mountain region around the pass, which is a popular tourism destination.

Understand [ edit ]

The region around the Puncak Pass has been developed for its tea plantations during the Dutch colonial time. After the construction of the Great Post Road in the early 19th century, the area became more easily accessible from the cities of Buitenzorg (present-day Bogor ) and Batavia ( Jakarta ) and the upper class, that was looking for the cooler mountain air, started to built Swiss-type chalets in the area.

Also after Indonesian independence the Puncak region has remained a popular tourism destination, and it is especially a popular weekend getaway for the citizens of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. The region therefore has an abundance of hotels, villas, and mountain resorts. During weekends and holidays the roads of Puncak, as well as the highway from Jakarta via Bogor to Puncak, are very congested. A large number of foreign tourists come from the Middle East. Many of them stay for months with its big families, so many people, mainly in Cisarua on the western side of the pass, can speak Arabic. Arabic signs on hotels and money changers' shops and also Arab restaurants with Arabic-language menus can be found easily in Cisarua which nowadays is known as 'Arab Village'. For Middle East tourists visiting Indonesia, Puncak is a must and the popularity of Puncak leads Bali .

The mountains on the south side of the pass are the Gede and Pangrango volcanoes. Since 1980, the mountain area has been designated a nature reserve as Mount Gede Pangrango National Park . There are various options for recreation in the national park area.

By car [ edit ].

Puncak is a two- to three-hour drive from Jakarta via the Jagorawi toll road. There is usually heavy inbound traffic on weekends, and especially long holiday weekends. When heavy traffic jams occur, police often make the main road into Puncak a one-way street for one to two hours, and then reverse the direction. This is safe, because a police car guides the one-way flow, but it can result in very significant delays. Don't take guidance on alternative routes from young men along the road, as the alternative routes are usually not faster, and people in villages along such routes may require the driver to give them money, or scratch the car.

From the eastern side, from Bandung via Cianjur , the drive to Puncak takes usually about 3-3½ hours.

By public transport [ edit ]

Most people go to Puncak with a private vehicle, but it is also possible to travel by public transport. There are frequent 'L300' minibuses that travel between Baranangsiang terminal in Bogor and Cianjur. There are no fixed bus stops on the way, but you can ask the driver to drop you off anywhere along the road on the mountain pass. There are also various bus companies (on routes such as Bogor-Bandung) that traverse the Puncak pass, and you can ask to get off in Puncak. Most buses however take the detour via the tolled motorways, so make sure you take a bus that takes the Puncak route.

Get around [ edit ]

Getting around in the Puncak area is easiest if you have your own vehicle. However, keep in mind that Indonesian driving habits are daunting and chaotic, and traffic rules are often ignored. Frequently, the entire main road over the Puncak pass is congested. In times that it is not congested, overtaking habits of many drivers are very dangerous (overtaking in blind corners, for example). Especially if it is your first time in Indonesia, it is advisable to rent a car with a driver, rather than to drive by yourself. The additional cost of hiring a driver is usually about Rp100,000 to 150,000 per day. When heavy traffic jams occur (mainly during weekends and holidays), police often make the main road into Puncak (on the western side) a one-way street for one to two hours, and then reverse the direction.

Public transport is mainly available along the main road (from Bogor via the Puncak pass to Cianjur ). There are various angkot (public minivan) routes, such as from the pass to Cipanas, and from Cipanas to Cibodas. The angkot s do not follow a fixed schedule, and there are no fixed stops (to get on, simply raise your hand to the driver). In case of traffic congestion, angkot drivers often try to overtake by using the roadside shoulder or parking places. This makes angkot s generally quicker than other vehicles, but only slightly.

A good way (or the only way) to get off the main road if you don't have your own vehicle is hiring an ojek (motorcycle taxi). Ojek riders are usually waiting in groups at major street corners. You will have to negotiate a price, but for a short trip (a few km) by ojek a price of Rp10,000-20,000 is common. In case of heavy traffic congestion, prices of ojek rides increase, as people may use their services to get out of the mountain region. Ojek can nowadays also be hired through an app on your phone, popular on-demand ojek services include Go-Jek and GrabBike.

Along Jalan Raya Cipanas , the main road on the eastern side of the mountain pass, there are lots of nurseries offering flowers and other decorative plants. They are generally cheap, but you will need to negotiate with the vendor for a good price. In addition, there are several factory outlet stores selling branded clothes for discounted prices.

Anna, there's 2 way to do this excursion.

Second, to do it yourself. For this, you need to do more homework; calling car rentals for quotation, study the area map, and find places to eat by yourself. Plus, if you're going on weekend (which tends to be crowded) and the rental is exceeding the hour, you need to pay more for rental. Besides, you need to pay additional cost such as petrol, toll charges, driver's meal (optional, but recommended), entrance fee, your meal, etc. The benefit of this is that you can be there as long as you want without having to stick to the program/itinerary. BUT, if you want to save the hassle (and since there are 2 of you and you only want a day trip), just book the first option, it's a better option if you're really clueless about the destination.

additionally..... check double CAREFULLY your time-table in JKT, and make SURE your trip to Puncak/ safari does NOT fall on weekend, public holiday, festive season, long weekend etc. Friday for one day trip is also a bad idea.

Traffic is the area is ABSOLUTELY horrendous. One may easily stuck on the road for 10-12 hours.

taman Safari is best seen with your own vehicle.

If you start early enough, you can also combine the trip with a stroll through the Bogor Botanical Gardens, or the absolutely lovely Cibodas Gardens further along the Puncak Road.

There are lots of ugly stretches along the Puncak Rd(cheap garish hotels) interspersed with some very breathtaking scenery. You will not go hungry either. Obviously, stopping and looking around is going to take your own vehicle. IMHO.

I notice that the traffic to Puncak has gotten worst in the last month or so. I had to abort a trip as i was stuck in traffic 2 weeks ago. Usually it takes max. 2.5 hours but nowadays it seems to be getting worst.

Is there a holiday season for Puncak?

Will it be quieter during the fasting month?

Puncak means “peak”, is the highest land on the slope of Mount Gede Pangrango. The highland connects Bogor and Bandung. The highest level is Puncak Pass area with an elevation about 1,500m. This place is located about 85 KM south of Jakarta city and takes about 2 upto 2,5 hours driving from Central Jakarta on weekday.

Puncak is a popular excursion area for Jakarta’s people. Every weekend, there are many tourist from Jakarta spending their weekend on this highland area. That is why Puncak is best visited on weekday. You can visit Puncak easily from Jakarta. If you don’t have car, you can take a bus or hire us to take you there. How to Reach Puncak

The closest International airport to Puncak are Soekarno–Hatta International Airport Jakarta (CGK) and Husein Sastranegara Airport Bandung (BDO). Start from Jakarta is more convenient than Bandung because there are toll roads from airport Jakarta until Ciawi: airport toll & Jagorawi toll road.

The Jagorawi Toll Road connects the capital city of Jakarta to Bogor city and Ciawi. It is why the name is Jagorawi, the short for Ja karta – Bo gor – Ci awi . Ciawi is the closest area to reach Puncak from the toll road. From Ciawi exit toll, the road becomes narrow and hilly. The road is lined with many restaurants, convenient stores, vegetables stalls, food stalls, hotels, petrol stations, etc.

Puncak is a popular getaway destination for Jakarta people. There are many people visiting Puncak especially on weekend, causing bad traffic along Puncak road. That’s why every weekend and national holiday, local police enforce one way rule to manage the heavy traffic. Here is the schedule of the rule. Please note that sometimes the schedule is applied at different time depend on traffic condition. The system is not applicable for motorcycle.

•  09:00 – 11:30 AM , One Way Up from Ciawi exit toll gate until Puncak Pass. It means, cars/vehicles from Puncak Pass going down to Jakarta or Ciawi toll would be blocked. Cars need to wait until One Way Up is finished or find an alternative route.
•  11:30 AM – 03:00 PM , Two Way.
•  03:00 – 05:00 PM , One Way Down from Puncak Pass to Ciawi entrance toll gate.
•  09:00 – 11:00 AM , One Way Up from Ciawi exit toll gate until Puncak Pass.
•  11:00 AM – 03:00 PM , Two Way.

Local police also place the odd-even car plate number policy every weekend and national holiday.

Few Days Tour

Going further by car after exiting Gunung Mas, you will see beautiful scenery of tea gardens and hills on the left and right of the main road. On the highest level, you will reach Puncak Pass. It is the highest place cars can reach and can be parked. You can take few photos here. If you brave enough, you can ask the driver to take you to Paragliding hill and jump from the hill with altitude about 1345m only using a parachute.

Taman Safari - Get an Awesome Experience by Feeding Animals at the Safari Park

Before reaching Taman Safari, our driver will suggest you to purchase some carrots and bananas. You will see lots of stalls selling carrots before entering the park. With the carrots in hand, you can feed some animals while driving through the park. The animals are aggressive enough. They will come to your car window and asking for carrots or bananas. But not all animals can be fed. When entering the wild animals area, you must put up your window. Our driver will warn you about it.

The mosque was built in cooperation between Gunung Mas tea plantation company and local people. The name “Atta’awun” was derived from Arabic word which means mutual cooperation. The architecture of the mosque is very unique. The shape doesn’t look like a typical mosque but rather giant mushrooms. The building is surrounded by beautiful gardens with a small river flow.

Kota Bunga Villa Estate

Kota Bunga is a Villa Estate area built on an area of ​​approximately 125 hectares, surrounded by mountains and hills. In the estate area, there are about 2500 houses built in thematic design. Lake Telaga Warna

It is a small lake located in the middle of forest near tea plantation. The color of the water normally has moss green color. But sometimes the color is gradually changing. The location is also little bit far from entrance depend on your room location.

3. Jimmers Mountain Resort

Jimmers Mountain Resort is an ideal hotel for you who want to get a beautiful mountain view right from your room. It has a very big swimming pool. Sadly, it is not close to the main route and has a narrow access.

4. Pesona Alam Resort & Spa

This hotel is located about 5 minutes driving before Taman Safari’s entrance gate. It has great mountain view, beautiful swimming pool, and nice outdoor pine forest meeting area. Guests can choose to stay in a room or villa. For great flexibility, if you come with your big family, I recommend you to stay in a villa. It has few rooms in one Villa, just like a home. You will feel stay at home here. Unlike other hotels, the earliest time to book a room in this hotel is 2 months before your arrival. So you cannot book the room you want if your arrival or check-in time is more than two months.

Recommended Restaurants in Puncak

1. bumi aki.

Bumi Aki is a famous restaurant. The line is always long every weekend. No wonder, because their Indonesian & Sundanese foods are delicious. Fried gurame fish, nasi goreng kampung, tumis genjer, chicken satay, and fried baby fish are recommended to be tried. Their mountain & vegetable farm views are also beautiful.

2. Puncak Pass Resort Restaurant

This restaurant is located at Puncak Pass Resort. As a Dutch Heritage resort, they serve Indonesian and Dutch cuisine like Poffertjes, Beef Croqutte, Bitter Ballen, Pannekoek, oxtail soup, hot bandrek (ginger tea), etc. This restaurant is well designed in a simple and natural concept. It is a nice outdoor restaurant, equipped with wood furniture, and has beautiful green hills view.

3. Rindu Alam Restaurant (Now Closed)

Established since 1980, Rindu Alam is a legendary Indonesian restaurant situated at Puncak Pass, with an elevation of 1,445M. This restaurant offers a dining experience with breathtaking tea hill scenery. Rindu Alam serves a variety of Indonesian & Sundanese food. Popular foods from this restaurant are: Nasi Goreng Dadar Gulung (Omelette Fried Rice), Ikan mas kecil cabe hijau (fried baby fish with green chili), grilled goat, satay, Gurame fish, petai bean, and Campur Sari (mixed food, consist of anchovy, green chili, chicken, duck eggs, and fried shrimp).

Rindu Alam restaurant is now closed permanently

Rindu Alam restaurant was built on a land owned by West Java government. There was a land lease agreement between the restautant and government. The agreement has expired since January 20th, 2020 but has not been extended.

4. Kupu-Kupu Restaurant

Kupu-kupu offering authentic Indonesian cuisine. Their favorite dishes are oxtail soup, Balinese sate lilit, grilled banana topped with cheese, soto Betawi, es campur, etc.

Kupu-kupu restaurant is located at The Grand Hill Resort, at a high elevation on the side of Puncak Road. From the restaurant, you can see the current traffic condition on the road. At the resort, you can also find another recommended restaurant selling international food, named The Grand Hill Bistro and Cafe.

5. Cimory Riverside

Cimory stands for Cisarua Mountain Dairy. Firstly made, Cimory was a company that produce dairy products and got milk from local farmers. The company produce yogurt and fresh milk. Due to its products popularity, the company growing fast and now has two restaurants in Puncak area: Cimory Mountain View and Cimory Riverside. Both of them are popular restaurants, but the Riverside is most popular because it is bigger and has more facility/shop like 3D museum, petting zoo (forest walk), aquarium, batik shop, chocolate shop, and snack shop.

Other recommended restaurants are Bumi Nini, Grand Hill Bistro, Nichole’s Kitchen, Bebek Tepi Sawah @ Le Eminence Hotel, The Lake House @ Pesona Alam Resort, Bavarian Haus Bratwurst & Grill (German Food), and Roofpark Cafe.

Recommended Authentic Food & Beverages in Puncak

Puncak is part of West Java province which their authentic food is called Sundanese food. In Puncak, you will find not only Sundanese food, but also Indonesian food and legendary Dutch food. Here are some recommended food and beverages.

Gemblong is a traditional snack made of glutinous rice flour mixed with shredded coconut and coconut milk, then fried and coated with brown palm sugar. So the taste is sweet. Gemblongs are usually sold by many peddlers in front of popular restaurants, at tourism places, and on Puncak road. It is easily distinguished by its blue container which texted Gemblong. The most popular Gemblong is labelled Gemblong Bu Juju, means Gemblong by Madam Juju.

Bajigur is a traditional beverage from West Java. It is a hot beverage consist of coconut milk and brown sugar with additional ingredients like ginger, young coconut slices, and salt.

There is another hot beverage similar to Bajigur, named Bandrek. Bandrek’s main ingredients are ginger and palm sugar, without coconut milk added. That’s why it is hotter than Bajigur. People usually drink it to warm their body at highland.

Sate (Satay)

Satay is a grilled meat dish originated in Indonesia. It composed from few slices of meat skewered on a bamboo skewer. Satay may consists of chicken, beef, rabbit, goat, or other meats. The skewers of meat are grilled on hot charcoal fire. 

In Puncak, chicken and goat satay are very popular. One porsion of satay may consists of 10 pieces of satay, prepared with peanut sauce and ketchup. Few popular restaurants selling satay are Bumi Aki, Pusat Sate Kiloan (PSK),  and Sate Haji Kadir.

Sop Buntut (Oxtail Soup)

Oxtail soup is a soup made with beef tails as its main ingredient. Other ingredients are carrot, potatoes, onion, cloves, cinnamon, etc.

Karedok is an authentic raw vegetable salad from West Java (Sundanese). It is a dish with raw vegetables and peanut sauce as its main composition. It includes cucumber, cabbage, small round eggplant, bean sprouts, carrots, and basil leaves. The dish is similar to Gado-gado from Jakarta. The Gado-gado is also a salad, but the vegetables are boiled, while Karedok’s vegetables are raw.

Karedok is dressed with sauce made of peanuts, chillies, brown sugar, water, and other ingredients.

Bubur Ayam Cianjur (Cianjur Chicken Porridge)

Bubur Ayam Cianjur is a chicken porridge originated from Cianjur regency, West java. As you might know, Puncak area is a highland spread between Bogor and Cianjur Regency. The Cianjur chicken porridge sellers can be found easily along Puncak Pass road every morning. People like to eat porridge as their breakfast. It is a fast and easy way to have breakfast in the morning.

Drink and Taste Different Types of Tea

Jasmine tea

Puncak is famous for its tea plantation. Most of tea products are exported to other countries, but you can still taste some hot tea drinks in Puncak. There are few different types of tea you can taste. They are black tea, green tea, jasmine tea, and white tea. Black tea is believed to boost energy level because it has more caffeine than other type of tea. White and green tea is believed to be the best tea for health immunity. And the most expensive tea among them is white tea, because it is made of the only top buds of tea plant (camellia sinensis).

It's so much fun staying at Botanica. As soon as I entered the room, I felt good mood. The room is clean and the facilities are great. We can watch Netflix and YouTube, which keeps the kids entertained. The restaurant also has a beautiful garden view and a peaceful atmosphere. The rooftop swimming pool allows us, as parents who don't swim, to enjoy the mountain view. Highly recommended to stay here. And if you want to continue your trip to the safari park, it's only a 5-minute drive without any traffic jams. 👍👍

The Botanica Sanctuary architecture lets fresh air through it. It was a very refreshing stay. Overall modern design and clean. A spacious Valley Suite with shower and separate bathtub, nice terrace, a large supply of eco-friendly bath amenities that they also provided in the pool area. Breakfast was delicious, lots of options, also traditional snacks. Staff was fast, friendly but also strick on mask usage while walking around the resto. Rooftop pool was also great, cold refreshing water in main pool, warm water for kids pool, and 2 hot jacuzzi's facing the mountains view, just perfect especially in the chilly afternoon. Staff was always seen in here in the pool, not just to make sure everyone gets a towel, but my feeling: also looking out for safety. Free bike rent for adults, and quite an area to roam around. You can bring kids to Pesona Alam or just walk into the Lake House. We had dinner at the Lake House, transport from hotel, the food was awesome, great beef burger, good value for money. Only critic was the clear noise you can hear from upstairs during the night. Strange how people can drag their furniture (chair on terrace) every 10 seconds from 830-past midnight. Called receptionist but couldn't find the source. I guess it was just the building/design and noisy guest, so you can hear everything so clearly that interupts your peacefull sleep, quite ironic for such a sanctuary. I would say ask for the highest room.

Hotel was clean. Bed cover in white. Staff are kind and helfull. There is car to pick up and drop off from parking to hotel vv. Has swimming pool water cold as icecwater challange myself to swim. Has jacuzzi with warm water and a bit hot water. Has pool for kids so in total have 4 pools. Has access to pesona alam next door hotel. Easy walk to lake hoise for nice food with nice view. Has swan lake. Club huis for tea coffee and cake. Has iron in the room bath room is clean connected to wall drop with nice partition close n open. A lot of open space for kids and adult to walk or take photos. I like sport so i did swim, yoga and walkng to the forest. Breakfast was good many choices and place to sit in door and out door. Interior design are nice. I came during Christmas time interior full with Christmas theme. Really nice. Highly recommended hotel

Best hotel in Puncak”

We stayed in the loft family room for the weekend and we had a blast. Room was so nice and clean, all the hotel properties including the swimming pool were clean too. Which is an extra point for me. Breakfast quite varied and the facilities were great. All the staffs were super nice and friendly too. I would definitely come back. Great Place for Family Staycation”

Consistency of Service from Security, Front Office, FB Service until Housekeeping Dept. They all really did great service especially Fiendri, April (GRO), Pak Viktor (FBM), asst restaurant manager ( I forgot the name), Service staff in the restaurant during our dinner. The food and bevege was great during our dinner. My special thanks to Pak Handy (General Manager) and Pak Raymond (EAM) for amazing experience in your place Will come back for future Regards Viktor
