Hailing from Tupelo, Mississippi, US, Rae Sremmurd are a sibling hip-hop duo, featuring the two brothers Slim Jimmi (born December 29th, 1993) and Swae Lee (born june 7th, 1995).

With their youthful exuberance fueling their hip-hop party anthems, Rae Sremmurd quickly made a name for themselves in 2013, after being featured on producer Mike WILL Made It's mixtape, "Mike WILL Been Trill," with the track "We." The energy displayed made the track a popular hit, helping to establish the duo's name. Prior to being known as Rae Sremmurd, the brothers were part of the trio, Dem Outta St8 Boyz, who uploaded several tracks on the internet, gaining the attention of P-Nasty.

Soon after receiving praise from P-Nasty, they travelled to Atlanta to record with him, with the result being two tracks, "I Dip" and an early version of "We." After the success of their appearance on Mike WILL's mixtape, they re-recorded the track, choosing a more aggressive, rowdy affair that still maintained its care-free party vibes that made it previously so appealing. The result was "No Flex Zone," which built a lot of attention in the media, bolstered by an official remix by Nicki Minaj and Pusha T. The track became a hit, riding high up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 36 after its release in May 2014.

A second single soon followed in September that year, "No Type," which brought the duo further success, reaching number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Now hotly anticipated, their debut full-length, "SremmLife," was released in January 2015. The album was hugely successful, peaking at number five in the Billboard 200, as well as breaking the Top 40 in Canada and Denmark.

Live reviews

Rae Sremmurd, the collective name of hip hop brother duo Khalif Brown and Aaquil Brown which is likely to become a far more familiar name on the circuit in coming years. The young duo are likely to become a well known name on the circuit following the commercial success of their debut album as well as having scored an early hit single in the form of 'No Flex Zone'.

They have amassed a great following which simply adds to the growing reputation as they had been performing for many years under the stage name Dem Outta St8 Boyz and this gained them a cult-like following. Now the shows are made up of a combination of fans who discovered their music through chart sales and those who have followed from the beginning. Either way, the fans are equally enthusiastic as the duo practically bound out onto stage and greet the fans. They run through a slick set featuring a lot of the material from the debut as well as favourite 'No Flex Zone' played surprisingly early. With their abilities, energy and passion it is likely we will be seeing far more of Rae Sremmurd for years to come.

Rather annoyed as, for the Manchester concert. We had two supporting acts, which nobody really knew of, so therefore reduced the quality of the evening. Out of the 4 hours there, Rae sremmurd was on for less than an hour. However the thing I'm most annoyed at is that at the Amsterdam concert. They had drake as a special guest. DRAKE. And we had impact and Bobo something another who know ones knows. I feel like this is unfair and I should revive two free drake tickets to make up for this. Thankyou.

The guys were great and they did a great show I loved them! They animated the people in there and they know how to entertain. The only problem was that it was a small place and the people wanted to get to the front so they started to push and pull. But anyways it was great. Another thing to add is that they only play for 1 hour and a DJ plays music an entire hour before they come to stage.

Good atmosphere. I liked the begging when he cut the pineapple and threw it into the crowd... very unique. What I didn't like was the first couple of rapers in the begging. No one knew their music and although they had good energy, it just wasn't that great

Celebrated Mississippi-bred rap duo Rae Sremmurd has returned with its highly anticipated new album, Sremm 4 Life , which features contributions from Young Thug and Future.

To celebrate the release, the band–consisting of Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi–debuted a music video for one of the album’s pre-release singles, “Tanisha (Pump That).” Produced by Mike Will Made It, “Tanisha (Pump That)” also features a touch of Pharrell’s pen. The raucous banger will undoubtedly be a soundtrack for parties and club excursions all summer long. Watch the visual below.

Rae Sremmurd - Tanisha (Pump That) [Official Music Video]

Earlier this week, Rae Sremmurd took to social media to reveal the album’s tracklist. The project only includes two featured artists, though the duo recruited two megastars–the aforementioned Young Thug and Future–to join them on album cuts. Thugger is featured on “Royal Flush” and Future hops on “Activate.”

Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi stopped by USC on March 28 to promote the album. They played professors for the day, speaking to 150 students as guest lecturers in the Hip-Hop History course. The whole class also participated in the #MannequinChallenge trend that blew up in 2016.  The video is available to watch on TikTok.

“Like Tanisha, doin’ it for the people, nobody do it like she do, everything tight and see-through,” Slim Jxmmi raps over a hypnotic club beat and scratching effects. Swae Lee then joins in, singing: “Let’s not go back and forth, she’s what I need. Throwing it back and forth, let me speak.” With propulsive production and provocative lyrics, “Tanisha (Pump That)” has all the hallmarks of another Rae Sremmurd classic.

The duo’s first two albums, 2015’s  Sremm Life  and the following year’s  Sremm Life 2 , were each certified Platinum, and the latter spawned the group’s first No.1 hit, the Gucci Mane-assisted “Black Beatles” which is now 7x platinum.

Rae Sremmurd Enlist The Weeknd, Future On New Album 'SR3MM'

The duo's new triple album includes high-profile features plus solo efforts from both Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee

On May 4, Rae Sremmurd will drop their third album with a little something extra. The triple album, SR3MM , includes solo efforts JXMTRO by Slim Jxmmi and SWAECATION by Swae Lee as well as guest appearances across the three albums from the likes of The Weeknd , Future , Travis Scott , Juicy J , Young Thug, and Pharrell Williams .

While several songs from the project have already been unleashed, including "CLOSE" featuring Scott, "Powerglide" with Juicy J, and "Chanel," which comes from JXMTRO and features Williams and Lee, the news of The Weeknd, Future, and Young Thug gives fans a lot to look forward to tomorrow.

<iframe width="620" height="349" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/a_vRthnFBLk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The duo explained the differences between their solo albums to Rolling Stone , with Lee saying, "My side is crazy melodic," and Jxmmi revealing he wasn't as comfortable singing as his brother, so he "came out spraying" for his solo effort.

Rae Sremmurd will hit the road later this year, opening the first 14 dates of GRAMMY winner Childish Gambino 's fall tour starting Sept. 6 in Atlanta. A full list of dates, including a handful of summer appearances is available at Rae Sremmurd's website .

Remembering Producer Rico Wade, Helped Define The Sound Of Southern Hip-Hop

Rico Wade, legendary producer and one-third of Organized Noize, who helped forge the sound of Atlanta hip-hop and propelled artists like OutKast, Ludacris, and TLC to fame, has died at 52.

Hip-hop has lost another legend. Rico Wade , an integral part of the bedrock of Southern hip-hop, the godfather of modern Atlanta rap, and one-third of the production crew Organized Noize with Patrick "Sleepy" Brown and Ray Murray , has died. He was 52.

Wade was a force that helped launch the careers of OutKast , Goodie Mob, Ludacris , and Future , and produced and co-wrote hits for artists including TLC 's "Waterfalls," as part of a mid-'90s Southern hip-hop renaissance. The epicenter of this revolution was the Dungeon, his mother's basement in East Point, Georgia. The location built a reputation as a haven for Dungeon Family artists like André "André 3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton among a generation of ATL creatives formulating their own flavor of Southern rap.

"We're deeply saddened by the passing of Rico Wade, one of Atlanta’s most prolific music producers," said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. "Rico's influential contributions to the Atlanta music scene beginning in the 1990s helped foster the rise of some of hip-hop’s most prominent artists and played a pivotal role in shaping the genre as we know it today. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he influenced.”

Wade was nominated for two GRAMMYs during his lifetime including Record Of The Year for TLC's "Waterfalls" and Album Of The Year for OutKast's Stankonia.

“Rico left an indelible mark on music and culture around the world and for that, the South will always have something to say,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens in an issued statement echoing the famous battle cry of André 3000's 1995 Source Awards Best New Artist acceptance speech .

It's been more than 30 years since OutKast dropped their first-ever single "Player's Ball" in 1993 and on that track Wade's voice is the first. He sets the tone for the legendary duo's entire career and Southern hip-hop at the same time with the introduction: "Man, the scene was so thick/ Lowriders, '77 Sevilles, El Dogs/ Nothin' but them 'Lacs/ All the players, all the hustlers/ I'm talkin' 'bout a Black man heaven here/ You know what I'm sayin'?"

"Rico Wade brought us to his house studio, where I heard the most interesting music production I'd ever heard from Atlanta," André 3000 told the Recording Academy in a 2019 interview reflecting on his experience working on OutKast's debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik . "It was Rico, Ray, and Sleepy's vision to make sure [OutKast would put] Southern lifestyle first. I was just playing my part the best I could."

Outkast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik would go on to sell 500,000 records and became certified platinum within a year. "When we were working on the OutKast vibe, even though there were two members in the group, we all considered ourselves OutKast at the time — including all of Organized Noize and the Goodie Mob members who appeared on the album," Murray told the Recording Academy in 2019.

Organized Noize signed a publishing deal with L.A. Reid and Babyface 's label LaFace Records in 1993, setting the foundation for their work on OutKast's seminal "Player's Ball" single. It was a lasting connection that would serve the rest of Wade's career.

Wade would continue to work with Reid during Reid's tenure as chairman and CEO of Epic Records from 2013 to 2017, building a hub for hip-hop artists at the label including Wade's cousin, Atlanta rapper Future. Future would become the first artist ever on the Billboard charts to debut back-to-back albums at No. 1 with his 2017 release HNDRXX . In March, Future and Metro Boomin jointly released another No.1 album, We Don’t Trust You .

Wade nurtured Future's talents through his Dungeon connects. The two didn't meet until Future was well into his teens, but once they did Wade quickly put his cousin's clear drive and talent to use, introducing him to the Dungeon Family and bringing him into the studio to work on in-house production projects including Ludacris ' "Blueberry Yum Yum" (Red Light District), which earned Future a songwriting credit in 2004.

“That's how he ended up writing the record for Ludacris, becoming part of a group that could make music, and getting a record deal,” Wade told Complex in 2013. “It showed him that the music industry money is real."

Inspired by his cousin, Future studied the industry through the in-roads made by Wade. “I took everything I learned from him and applied it to my everyday craft from being in the studio,” Future told Complex. "Just knowing how to feel records so I know how to make songs and write for people to keep around and go to the next level.” His devotion to Wade's tutelage and legacy is apparent in the Olde English script tattooed across his arms that matches Wade's own markings — "DUNGEON" appears on the right and "FAMILY" on the left.

Killer Mike , a constant collaborator who worked with Wade on his latest album Michael which swept the 2024 GRAMMYs rap categories with three wins for Best Rap Album , Best Rap Song , and Best Rap Performance , announced Wade's passing in an Instagram post on Sunday. "I don't have the words to express my deep and profound sense of loss. I am Praying for your wife and Children. I am praying for the Wade family. I am praying for us all," Killer Mike wrote. "I deeply appreciate your acceptance into The Dungeon Family, mentorship, Friendship and Brotherhood. Idk where I would be without ya'll."

There’s music for all tastes ready to fill your playlists for the rest of the year. Read on for 15 of the most exciting albums dropping in April 2024.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER - minisode 3: TOMORROW

Release date: April 1

Luckily, fans of the K-pop quintet TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) rarely have to wait for new music. Six months after releasing their third studio album, The Name Chapter: Freefall , the group is gearing up to release minisode 3: TOMORROW .

The seven-song EP is fronted by upcoming lead single "Deja Vu," which is said to mix trap, rage, and emo rock into their signature emotional intensity, as per a press release. The other tracks continue to expand the group’s versatility, experimenting with pop rock, house, and acoustic guitars.

As usual, the concept of the album is connected to TXT’s overarching lore, and features several references to their past works — track "- --- -- --- ·-· ·-· --- ·–," for example, evokes their debut era where Morse Code was used in teasers and in the single "Crown."

TXT will embark on their Act: Promise World Tour starting May 3-5 in Seoul, South Korea, and then head to the U.S. for 11 shows across the country, including two dates at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Conan Gray - Found Heaven

Release date: April 5

Gen Z popstar Conan Gray has Found Heaven . After 2022’s Superache , his upcoming third album was co-produced by legendaries Max Martin , Greg Kurstin , and Shawn Everett , among others.

Gray had been teasing the 13-track record since last year with a slew of buoyant, '80s-tinged singles ( "Never Ending Song," "Killing Me" and "Lonely Dancers") and poignant, Elton John -esque ballads ( "Winner," "Alley Rose" ). "When I was making the album, I was really obsessively listening to music of that era," he explained to NME . "I think also, because it was a deeply emotional time, I was almost hiding from reality. I didn’t listen to a song from the 2020s during the making of this album."

To celebrate this new, holy era, Gray will be touring Australia in July, North America in September and October, and Europe and the UK in November. "I want people to know that I was having fun and goofing around, and I want you to smile and I want you to feel like you can just be yourself," he added. "I just want the album to be a reminder to people that you can be so many things all at once."

Sinkane - We Belong

Ahmed Gallab, the Sudanese American multi-instrumentalist behind Sinkane, has built his discography resisting musical genres. We Belong , his upcoming eighth studio album, is no different: it combines pop, funk, electronic, afrobeats, disco, and more into "a love letter to Black music," per a press release.

Sinkane’s first album since 2019’s Dépaysé , We Belong features 10 tracks and participations by Bilal, Money Mark, STOUT, and others. Each song tells the story of a different era in Black music and history, laced with love and hope for the future: the disco groove of "Come Together," the gospel choirs of "Everything Is Everything," the funky bassline of "How Sweet is Your Love."

Along with live band the Message, Sinkane has announced a select 10-city tour in the U.S., starting May 3 in New York City and wrapping up on June 9 in Pioneertown, California.

X Ambassadors - Townie

** Pop rock trio X Ambassadors dive deep into nostalgia for Townie , their fourth studio album. The record was inspired by their experience of growing up in the small city of Ithaca, New York, and how it shaped who they are. **

"As a grown man, I’ve fallen back in love with upstate NY, and I oddly feel blessed to have had something to rally so hard against/fight to escape from as a kid," vocalist Sam Harris said in a statement. "No Strings," the first single off the project, is an anthem for that restless feeling, and anchors their concept in a haunting, propulsive melody. "Your Town" and "Half-Life" continue the journey, although taking more melancholy tones.

X Ambassadors first set off their Townie tour in Europe and the UK during February and March. On the day of the release, they will begin the North American leg of the tour in Vancouver, Canada.

Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us

Five years after releasing their latest record, 2019’s Father of the Bride , indie band Vampire Weekend will drop their fifth studio album, Only God Was Above Us .

According to a press release, frontman Ezra Koenig wrote most of the songs in 2019-2020, and spent the last five years refining them with bandmates Chris Baio and Chris Tomson. The result is a collection of 10 "direct yet complex" tracks, "showing the band at once at its grittiest, and also at its most beautiful and melodic," as seen in singles "CAprilicorn," "Gen-X Cops," and "Classical."

In addition to a sold out performance in Austin, Texas that will coincide with the total eclipse on April 8 and a headline show at Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Vampire Weekend has announced an extensive North American tour throughout summer and fall.

Bryson Tiller - Bryson Tiller

Grab your tickets to Bryson Tiller’s upcoming tour while you can: he might go on a hiatus right after. That’s what the R&B singer and rapper told Complex , alleging that his number one passion is actually video games. "I've been designing a game for the past three years; been looking into internships for different companies. That's what I want to prioritize after this album comes out."

The album Tiller refers to is his eponymous fourth LP, a 19-track collection that includes a feature by Victoria Monét , and is described as "seamlessly blending R&B, dancehall, pop, drill, trapsoul, neo-soul, and hip hop" in a press release. " Bryson Tiller is not just an album; it's a declaration of artistic independence and a tribute to the relentless pursuit of greatness."

The project’s three alluring singles ( "Outside," "Whatever She Wants," and "CALYPSO") exemplify how Tiller pushed the boundaries of R&B even more, and solidified his identity as one of music’s most singular artists. "My No. 1 goal with this album is just for everybody on Earth to hear it one time," Tiller also told Complex. "My guarantee is that they'll love [at least] one song."

Tori Kelly - TORI.

"You think you know who Tori Kelly is, but this album will prove that maybe you didn’t," said the YouTube-star-turned-singer in a NME interview about her fifth studio album, TORI . "I feel like I’m stepping into my power and owning my craft."

Her first LP since 2020’s A Tori Kelly Christmas , TORI. took inspiration from '90s and early aughts R&B and pop, as heard on singles "Missin U" and "Cut." "I was trying to create this world of nostalgia, but also there’s that balance with [ TORI. ] feeling fresh and new," she said. Comprising 15 tracks, it also includes participations by Ayra Starr in "Unbelievable," LE SSERAFIM ’s Kim Chae-won on "Spruce," and Jon Bellion — who co-wrote and produced the album — on "Young Gun."

During the creation process, Kelly told Bellion that her guidelines were to be able to "belt out [songs] in the car" and "dance" to them, like one can do in the powerful "High Water." As far as it goes, it looks like they accomplished their mission.

Kelly will kick off her Purple Skies North American tour on April 12 in Ventura, California, and conclude it on May 3 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Future & Metro Boomin - TBA / We Still Don’t Trust You

Release date: April 12

Rap titans Future and Metro Boomin have been personal friends and work peers for over a decade, but their first collaborative album is only coming out now. We Don’t Trust You , the first installment of a double album, dropped on March 22, while the second part — titled yet to be announced — is slated to release on April 12.

In We Don’t Trust You , the duo showcased their flawless chemistry with grandiose tracks, haunting trap beats, and star-studded features, such as "Like That" with Kendrick Lamar , "Young Metro" with The Weeknd , and "Type S—" with Travis Scott and Playboi Carti . As Metro defined in an interview with Complex , "it’s the classic Future and Metro, but just updated."

So far, no further details have been shared about the second album, but expectations remain high for the duo to outdo the first effort.

girl in red - I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!

"I wanted to sincerely apologize for the events that happened directly after the release of my second album, I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! " prefaced Norwegian singer girl in red — real name Marie Ulven — on a solemn social media video last month. But while viewers caught their breaths, she revealed it was all a witty joke: the album will only come out on Aprilil 12.

"This is a big year for me. 2024 is, like, my year," she added in the video. I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! follows Ulven’s 2021 debut If I Could Make It Go Quiet , but feels "more fun and more playful, and a little bit more confident," as she told Billboard . Lead track "Too Much" brings that novelty heads on, while singles "Doing It Again Baby" and "You Need Me Now?" with Sabrina Carpenter prove that Ulven’s powerful pop is only getting better.

Ulven will kick off her Doing It Again tour from April 16-June 2 in North America, and from Aug.27-Oct. 5 in Europe.

Kenny Garrett & Svoy - Who Killed AI?

For his first electronic foray, NEA Jazz Master and GRAMMY-winning saxophonist Kenny Garrett enlisted the acclaimed producer-musician Svoy. The result is Who Killed AI? , a seven-track daring exploration of jazz and pop culture.

"The first two songs are really reminiscent of Miles [Davis] ," Garrett shared in a statement. "The way I’m stretching the melody — that’s how I played with Miles." The opener and lead single "Ascendence" is a strong preview of what’s to come: distorted synths and drum and bass beats fused with Garrett’s fun and brilliant lines, a compelling portrait of what the future of music can be.

Later in the year, Garrett plans to take the album on a live tour. "I think my fans will find this interesting," Garrett shared in a statement. "Some people forget that my teacher was Miles Davis. So for me, it’s not that I have to do something different. It is just something that I do. All you have to do is present the music and let them take the journey."

ERNEST - Nashville, Tennessee

Early in March, singer/songwriter ERNEST announced on social media that he would be running for mayor in order to "legalize country music." Of course, fans started to get their hopes up for new music — and they were right. The plot was just part of his promotion for the newly announced Nashville, Tennessee , out April 12.

A tour de force with 26 tracks, the record features a bevy of guest stars: from Jelly Roll ("I Went To College, I Went To Jail"), to Lainey Wilson ("Would If I Could"), and ERNEST's two-year-old son, Ryman Saint. It also includes a bluegrass cover of Radiohead ’s "Creep" with HARDY, and a cover of John Mayer ’s "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room."

In addition to "I Went To College, I Went To Jail," four other advance tracks have been shared: "Why Dallas" with Lukas Nelson , "Ain’t As Easy," "Ain’t Too Late," and "How’d We Get Here."

Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department

Release date: April 19

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

On the same night that she won her  lucky 13th GRAMMY for Best Pop Vocal Album with 2022’s Midnights , Taylor Swift also announced her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department . Coming out April 19, the record will feature 16 tracks and collaborations by Florence + the Machine on "Florida!!!" and Post Malone on "Fortnight."

"I needed to make it, it was really a lifeline for me, it sort of reminded me why songwriting gets me through life," Swift said during her The Eras Tour show in Melbourne. "I've never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on Tortured Poets ."

Along with the statement, Swift also shared an alternate cover for the physical album, titled after and including bonus track "The Bolter." Later on, three other versions named "The Manuscript," "The Albatross," and "The Black Dog" — all including an eponymous bonus track —  were also made available for purchase.

For the rest of the year, Swift will be touring through Europe and North America. As usual with the singer, more surprises are likely to come soon.

PartyNextDoor - PartyNextDoor 4 (P4)

Release date: April 26

** Canadian hitmaker and singer PartyNextDoor will make his long-awaited return this month. PartyNextDoor 4 , also dubbed P4 , is his first full-length work since 2020’s Partymobile , and continues his eponymous albums series after 2016’s P3 . **

"This is the hardest I’ve ever worked on an album. This is the proudest I’ve felt," Party told Billboard for his March cover story. "I’m excited to grind even more for the next [one]. I’m in love with how hard you should work for it."

He also explained that love is the reason why he takes so long to release new stuff. "I get into relationships and then music becomes second," he said. "I think I’m going to take a break from relationships, a long break, and just get back to making music."

In support of the release, Party shared moody, intimate singles "Resentment" and "Real Woman" — inspired by the same relationships that kept him off stage.

St. Vincent - All Born Screaming

In an interview with Mojo , St. Vincent — also known as Annie Clark — defined her upcoming seventh album, All Born Screaming , as "post-plague pop." Since its creation started right after the release of 2021’s Daddy’s Home , the years of seclusion and adjustment due to the COVID pandemic were a prominent influence in her new work.

"That kind of isolation breeds paranoia and loneliness, and loneliness can breed violence," she said. "It’s been a time of loss collectively and personally. [But] loss and death are very clarifying things, they make everything that doesn’t f—ng matter go away."

Comprising 10 tracks and features from Dave Grohl , Cate Le Bon, and Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, All Born Screaming is St. Vincent’s first entirely self-produced set, and an attempt at showcasing what does matter. "This record is darker and harder and more close to the bone. I’d say it’s my least funny record yet. There’s nothing cute about it," she added.

Clark released two singles off the album, "Broken Man" and "Flea," and is gearing up for a North American tour starting May 22.

Picture This - Parked Car Conversations

" Parked Car Conversations is by far the most personal album we have ever created," said vocalist and lyricist Ryan Hennessy in a press release about Picture This’s upcoming album. "It is an album about everything involved with being human. Love and loss and hurt and euphoria and all of those other complex emotions that flutter in between."

The album consists of 15 songs, but a third of it can be previewed through bittersweet, soaring singles "Get On My Love," "Song To Myself," "Leftover Love," "Call It Love," and "Act Of Innocence." Overall, Parked Car Conversations is a soundtrack "not to a movie, but to life," and aims to convey "the ups and downs of living" through ballads and anthems alike, according to Hennessy.

Coming almost three years since the Irish band’s last release, 2021’s Life in Colour , the new record will be celebrated in high spirits with an Europe and U.K. tour, starting April 21 in München, Germany.

10 Love Songs That Have Nothing to Do With Love: From "Every Breath You Take" To "Baby It's Cold Outside"

Don't let the song titles fool you. From misogynist attitudes to tales of coercion and even a secret pregnancy, many popular love songs aren't about love at all.

Many studies on love have proven that it seems to be a trait present throughout species. Although it's undeniable that the capacity for love is universal, evidence suggests love manifests differently across individuals. That is why, for many people, love is undefinable, with the word meaning something for one and something else for another.

This point has never been proven more true than in love songs. Numerous musicians and bands have sung about love, but their definition or meaning of the word and yours might be wholly different. You would be surprised to learn how many love songs have absolutely nothing to do with emotional or physical love.

When you delve beneath the surface, "love" songs are sometimes twisted, uncomfortable, sadistic, and unsavory. So, let's look at 10 love songs with nothing to do with love and everything to do with what they shouldn’t.

"Every Breath You Take" - the Police

When the Police released "Every Breath You Take" in 1983, it immediately became a huge hit, reaching No.1 on U.S., UK, Canadian, Irish, and South African charts. On the surface, this song seems romantic, which is why it made its way into numerous movie scenes and weddings, but the lyrics are uncomfortable and prove the song is not actually about love.

Frontman Sting sings, "I'll be watching you," and, "Oh, can't you see, you belong to me?" about the song's object of affection. Rather than lyrics about a lover, it's believed that the song is about a stalker. At the time Sting was suffering a mental breakdown, making the verses infinitely more evil.

In fact, Sting himself said : "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership."

"Rollercoaster of Love" - Ohio Players

On the surface, the lyrics "It's a rollercoaster ride/we're on top for the moment/ and then we'll take that dive" seem to describe a relationship's exhilarating ups and downs. However, there has been much debate over the years about the true meaning behind the Ohio Players ' staple.

The most popular theory is that the song is about life's ups and downs, not love, but we'll never know. According to late frontman Leroy Bronner who wrote the tune, "To this day, I don't know what I wrote." He continued, "The words didn't make sense to me. But it was a hit."

The song also has a much darker recording humor, which further alienates it from the genre of love songs. According to the rumor to which the band responded "No comment," the scream on the track was the sound of a woman being murdered in the recording studio.

The woman's death is an urban legend, but the band decided to leave it in as a joke and as a way to create buzz for the song, with the actual scream belonging to keyboard player Billy Beck.

"Can't Feel My Face" - the Weeknd

The Weeknd is well known for penning lyrics that have multiple meanings, so it's not surprising that his hit track "Can't Feel My Face" isn't really about love.

With the lyrics: "I can't feel my face when I'm with you/But I love it" and "And I know she'll be the death of me, at least we'll both be numb/And she'll always get the best of me; the worst is yet to come." It sounds like a dark love song about a man who is so in love that he loses all control, which is plausible, but it's more likely the song is about cocaine.

According to Billboard , the song is about drug dependency, and the Weeknd is crooning about cocaine and likening it to a bad relationship. The Weeknd had hinted at the song being about drugs when he commented: "I just won a new award for a kids' show, Talking 'bout a face numbing off a bag of blow." Unfortunately, it's not very romantic.

"Umbrella" - Rihanna

Most believe that one of Rihanna 's most famous songs is about a woman comforting her partner and explaining that she will be there for him through the good and bad times. "Baby 'cause in the dark you can't see shiny cars/And that's when you need me there. With you, I'll always share," she sings.

However, a few people believe "Umbrella" is about the corruption of a person's soul – Rhianna's in this case. Some believe that the 2007 hit is about Rhianna welcoming the devil into her heart, body, and soul. While this is more of a conspiracy theory than anything else,  a pastor recently posted on TikTok that he came back from hell, and "Umbrella" was one of the songs being used to torture individuals.

"All I Wanna Do is Make Love To You" -  Heart

If you listen carefully to the lyrics in "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You," it's clear that the 1990 song actually about deceit.

Nancy and Ann Wilson are singing about being in love with another man who cannot provide her with children because he is impotent — so she finds a willing one-night stand. She sings, "I didn't ask him his name, this lonely boy in the rain." When morning comes, the protagonist says "All I left him was a note/ I told him I am the flower; you are the seed. We walked in the garden; we planted a tree."

After some time has passed, she's unnerved to come across his path, presumably pregnant: "You can imagine his surprise when he saw his own eyes/I said please, please understand/I'm in love with another man/And what he couldn't give me was the one little thing that you can."

"Bad Romance" - Lady Gaga

"Bad Romance" was developed as an experimental pop record featuring elements of German techno and house. With more than 184 million YouTube streams, the 2008 track quickly became one of Lady Gaga 's best songs.

On the surface, "Bad Romance" centers on the pull of a love that's bad for you: "I want your ugly, I want your disease/I want your everything as long as it's free/I want your love." However, it's not so straightforward.

Gaga said she drew inspiration from the paranoia she experienced while on tour. She also stated the song is about her attraction to unhealthy romantic romances that are not always about love.

"Young Girl" - Gary Puckett and the Union Gap

Not all love is appropriate, as the song "Young Girl" by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap proves. This 1968 single is wholly inappropriate and creepy (and illegal), but it still managed to become one of the band's best-known songs. In fact, despite the lyrics being more about unsavory infatuation than love, it still reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 (just behind "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay ").

Initially, this song doesn't appear inappropriate with lyrics  "Young girl, get out of my mind" possibly referencing the romance of a slight age gap. But the group doubles down: "My love for you is way out of line/ Better run, girl/You're much too young, girl."

If these words aren't enough to prove the song is about being infatuated with an underage girl, you might be convinced by lead singer Gary Puckett singing, "Beneath your perfume and make-up you're just a baby in disguise" and "Get out of here before I have the time to change my mind."

"Under My Thumb" - by the Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones have had their share of controversy over the years, and it's not hard to see why when you consider the meaning behind many of their big hits. "Under My Thumb" might have been marketed as a love song, but it's about a relationship rooted in hate and control.

With lyrics such as " Under my thumb/It's a squirmin' dog who's just had her day/Under my thumb/

A girl who has just changed her ways ," it's apparent that Mick Jagger is singing less about heartbreak and more about power. The misogyny is so clear in this song that it made it into the book Under My Thumb: Songs That Hate Women and the Women That Love Them .

"Baby It's Cold Outside" - Dean Martin

One of the most popular holiday season love songs, "Baby, It's Cold Outside" was written by Frank Loessser and performed by Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald . It's difficult to say if these musicians knew the song's sinister and controversial underbelly.

"Baby It's Cold Outside" is about a man who pressures a woman to stay at his home by any means necessary. The woman in the song tries to give reasons why she cannot stay with lyrics like "My mother will start to worry" and "My father will be pacing the floor." Yet, her concerns are shot down at every turn, with the man using the bad weather outside to keep her captive. Fortunately, the song has been remade with consensual lyrics, thanks to Kelly Clarkson and John Legend .

"You're Gorgeous" - Babybird

This song may have a happy rhythm, but if you pay attention to the lyrics, there is much more to this song than meets the eye. Although the song appears to be about a man who would do anything for his lady love, it is about exploitation.

This song — the British group's biggest hit, from 1996 — is about a sleazy photographer who takes advantage of a young and naive model and photographs her for men's magazines. The lyrics "You got me to hitch my knees up/And pulled my legs apart" details the true nature of this song.

"People should never be told how to interpret a song," Babybird told the blog Essentially Pop. "So, if they thought it was romantic, then fine." He continued, "Sadly, very few people got the true meaning, which is about male predatory behavior, but in popular music, most critics are a little blind to correct interpretation."

2024 GRAMMYs: Travis Scott Turns Music's Biggest Night Into A Heated Utopia

Travis Scott performed three songs from his hit album 'Utopia' at the 2024 GRAMMYs. In a speaker-ladden apocalyptic landscape, the Houston rapper performed "MY EYES," "I KNOW ?" and "FE!N" with Playboi Carti.

Travis Scott turned Crypto.com Arena into his personal road to Utopia , bringing the 2024 GRAMMYs , where he performed three songs from his latest No. 1 album .

Scott set the tone with a backdrop reminiscent of something out of a musical apocalypse. From sitting atop a stack of speakers in a smoky, strobing haze, the Houston-repping rapper kicked off with "MY EYES" before climbing down and transitioning into the brooding "I KNOW ?" The performance heated up — figuratively and literally, with bursts of flames — when he moved onto "FE!N," bringing out Playboi Carti while throwing chair shots WWE-style.

"MY EYES" and "I KNOW ?" are two of Scott’s three solo tracks on Utopia , which is packed with collaborators across its 19 tracks. In addition to "FE!N" guest Playboi Carti, the album boasts appearances from some of music’s biggest names (as well as several current GRAMMY nominees), including Beyoncé , Drake , the Weeknd , Bad Bunny , and Future . Its production credits include input from Kanye West , Producer Of The Year nominee Metro Boomin , Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, and others.

The heavy name recognition was well worth Utopia ’s wait time, five years after Scott’s 2018 LP Astroworld . Upon its release — which arrived with a 76-minute-long visual companion, CIRCUS MAXIMUS — the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and peaked atop Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Utopia also earned Scott his first No. 1 UK Album and his eleventh overall GRAMMY nomination, grabbing a 2024 nod for Best Rap Album.

At Long Last, Rae Sremmurd Return

Even better: The duo's long-postponed fourth album is, start to finish, their best one yet. Here, Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee go long on fatherhood, loss, and fighting off depression.

What’s five years, anyway? Well, five years ago, Donald Trump was in only his second year in office, A Quiet Place had just debuted as the number one movie in America, Drake’s “God’s Plan” was winding down an 11-week run as the top song in the country, and Rae Sremmurd were readying the release of their acclaimed third album Sr3mm . A half-decade later–an eternity for today’s attention-deficit hip-hop fans, who impatiently flood comments sections with “Drop that shit!” when asked to wait even weeks–Rae Sremmurd’s Sremm 4 Life is finally here. Even better: The long-postponed LP is, start to finish, the brothers’ best yet.

e

Slim Jxmmi (birth name Aaquil Brown) and Swae Lee (birth name Khalif Brown) are on either side of the big 3-0–Jxmmi turned 31 in December and Swae reaches the milestone in June. But on this cloudy April day in Manhattan, they hardly look a day older than they did in 2014, when their rowdy first single “No Flex Zone” broke them. Their success only grew from there: The following year their debut album SremmLife (which would eventually be certified platinum) bowed, and in 2016 came “Black Beatles”–the number one megahit whose success was fueled, pre-TikTok, by the viral Mannequin Challenge. It’s been a long day—a flight, plus a photo and video shoot—but they’re eager to talk about the long-gestating new LP and all the life that's happened since the world last heard from them. “I’m excited,” declares Swae Lee, ever the more excitable of the brothers. “There’s no other album like this that we’ve put out…with this feeling. You know, of course it’s gonna be high-energy, turnt-up songs, with good melodies and perfect production—but it’s also, the storyline of it. Everything we went through.” Slim Jxmmi is more reserved. “I don’t know how to describe the feeling, you know what I’m saying?” he offers.

Their chemistry, on stage and on record is remarkable. In conversation, they’re a study in contrast: Swae is an animated talker whose thoughts burble like water out of a fountain. Jxmmi is more measured and deliberate with his words, but also blunt and not one to sugarcoat. The difference is no doubt personality, but just as likely a function of that near five-year gap, which in many ways has been A Tale of Two Brothers. When Jxmmi says, matter of factly, that he and his brother “probably have different feelings” around the new project finally coming out, it’s because, since 2018, the two have often been on separate and seemingly unequal paths.

mamadi doumbouya

A global pandemic, a wrenching family tragedy, and newfound fatherhood (Jxmmi’s kids are five and two; Swae’s are two and six months) all contributed to the time between albums. But another factor was also surely that, right around the release of Sr3mm , Swae Lee’s own career as a collaborator and featured soloist took off. Since Rae Sremmurd’s second LP, Swae had increasingly leaned into singing, and suddenly he was one of the most in-demand guest artists in the business. From 2017 through 2021, he teamed on singles with a dazzling list of artists across multiple genres, including Drake, French Montana, Madonna, Skrillex, Kane Brown, Jhené Aiko, Wiz Khalifa, Camila Cabello, XXXTentacion, Alicia Keys, and Post Malone (for the ubiquitous 2018 collab, “Sunflower”).

Swae was on a roll, and the opportunities only fed his workaholic tendencies. “I don’t ever wanna go back to the hood, you feel me?” he explains. “I don’t want to go back to being broke. And I know what got me outta the hood. This right here. This music. So I’m in the studio as much as I can be.” But riding that wave left Rae Sremmurd on dry land. Speculation had already begun that the brothers might be parting ways when Sr3mm ’s release was accompanied by two solo albums, Jxmmi’s Jxmtro and Swae’s Swaecation , and it only grew in the fall of 2019, when Swae went on tour as a solo artist supporting Post Malone, playing a set that was at least half Rae Sremmurd songs. In 2020, Swae reminded fans in a tweet that he and his brother were “two individuals” and “different types of artists.” “Can brothers ever really break up?” some wondered. (See: Gallagher, Noel and Liam) Jxmmi pushes back on the idea that the duo was ever at risk of ending. “There wasn’t never no split in the group,” he asserts. “I just wanted to work on myself. I felt like there was ways that I could be a better entertainer. That’s what I took the time to work on, and I feel really that’s what’s brought us to this fourth album, for real.”

mamadi doumbouya

And yet. The Sremm 4 Life track “Royal Flush” opens with the line, “Leave me on read / You must be out of your head.” The lyric refers to a relationship, but it begs the question of whether for a while Jxmmi didn’t feel, himself, left on read. “There was a long time where I was thinking like, ‘What the hell’s going on?’’’ he concedes. “But I ain’t complain, I ain’t trip, I didn’t fall into depression. I just used that time to work on myself, because definitely there was a time when I could have fallen off. I could have fallen into drugs and depression—’cause nobody was for me. Phone wasn’t ringing, wasn’t nobody booking me no gigs, nobody looking out for me in that way. I spent a lot of time by myself, and I got myself together.” That included getting sober, taking up boxing, and hitting the gym, “every day.”

He adds, “I did feel like I was left on read. I just wasn’t in the forefront of people’s minds, ’cause I didn’t have music out, and I didn’t have people facilitate dropping music. I was in a bad mental place, but I didn’t let it destroy me.”

For his part, Swae says that despite his flurry of high-profile gigs, Rae Sremmurd’s future was never remotely in doubt. “I was still in the studio every night, running around L.A.,” he recalls. “Meeting celebrities, working. Boom! We meet each other, we make a song, comes out, it’s the biggest song in the world? Let’s do it again! So when somebody is like, ‘What are we doing with Rae Sremmurd?’ It’s a whole collective! We all gotta be on the same page! But I still can’t stop though. I’m not the type of nigga that can stop, ’cause I get antsy.”

Eventually, a pause came in the form of COVID, though Swae found ways to both shelter and stay busy-in-place. “I appreciated corona just because it gave me so much time to be in the studio,” he says. “I just made so many songs, I’d stay locked in. Those situations charge me up. Even when I lost my father, I was in the studio, and I was sick, just like pissed off, angry. But I know that there’s gonna be a time when you gotta pick back up and start moving again, so I channeled that energy. That night I even made a song and dedicated it to my dad.”

The January 2020 killing of their stepfather, Floyd Sullivan, who’d raised them since their teens, and the arrest of their younger brother, Michael, for the murder, devastated the whole family. Jxmmi refers to it in one of Sremm 4 Life ’s most thoughtful tracks, “Something I’m Not.” “It just felt like the type of song where I could express that type of pain,” he says. “And then I remembered my little brother, he’s always checking for us. When I talk to him on the phone, he always heard our newest record. And you know, I don’t ever want him to think we’re mad at him or nothing, when he get out [of prison]. He gonna be locked up for a long time. So I just always be thinking about him.”

The Rae Sremmurd sweet spot, where Swae’s irresistible melodies meet Jxmmi’s clever, pointed bars and Atlanta icon Mike Will Made-It’s essential production previously reached its zenith on the raunchy, rollicking 2018 gem “Powerglide,” but it’s more fully realized on Sremm 4 Life . The album looked like it would drop last summer–the brothers spent the early months of 2022 teasing it–but it was pushed back due to, in Swae’s words, “politics” with features, clearances, and “situations changing” that he can't elaborate on. That delay may have made for a better record. While it’s first and foremost a turnt-up, good-time album, there is variety. Even in a time in which rager sounds dominate rap, Rae Sremmurd have long done their own thing, and catchy melodies are a part of their signature. “We have so many styles, and we gotta cater to each one,” says Swae. “I might go in the studio one day and make all turnt-up records, one soft song. Next day, I might go and make eight soft songs, two turnt-up. It’s like bro, they’re not even really fully understanding us yet. They’re getting a glimpse of Rae Sremmurd right now, but we know what we’re capable of.”

The clubbiest tracks are already getting their shine. Danceable “Tanisha,” with a writing credit from Pharrell, is an obvious crowd-pleaser. A thirsty “Bend Ya Knees” serves staccato-synth trap, and, from “designer socks” to a Lamborghini (how many Lambs have figured into RS songs? I’ve lost count), the flex is strong on “Flaunt It/Cheap”–a Jxmmi song and a Sway song mashed into one. And nowhere does Jxmmi shine more than on the over-the-top “Sexy”–a hilarious, in-character romp over a throwback backing: “I know I think I’m sexy,” he crows. “And average things just don’t impress me.” “I’m actually a very goofy person,” he explains. “I asked for an old school beat, and that’s the first thing that came to mind! I did that voice and everybody in the studio started laughing, so I just kept going. That’s one of my favorite songs ever. That shit’s super fun.”

Look hard enough and a wisdom borne of ten years in the game comes through on Sremm 4 Life . Leveling up and not having to be like everyone else is at the heart of “Activate,” on which Swae declares, “I’m not normal no more / I’m not human no more.” On opener “Origami” he tells the “hotties” that “getting wasted ain’t a hobby” and on “YMCA,” delivers the snappy side-eyed line, “DTF? Thanks for informin’ me.” Has all the hedonism grown a little stale for one of hip-hop’s players? “I mean…it’s a good life,” Swae concedes. “Remember, you could be sitting in a fucking basement making T-shirt buttons for two cents an hour. So, can we recognize things for what they are? Yes. But I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. We’ve been in that other lifestyle.”

mamadi doumbouya

Jaws will truly drop at the most moving track, album closer “ADHD Anthem,” whose plaintive hook “I feel too many emotions” finds Swae in rare emo mode, soaring with a vulnerability reminiscent of the late Juice WRLD. “Some days you’re just going through it, and you be so over shit that you want to leave the planet,” he says now. “There’s all type of perspectives on that song but it’s definitely for the rockstar rap kids, the ragers. That’s the one we want to have people screaming at the concerts. I call it the ‘Black Beatles’ of this album.” Jxmmi used his verse, which references liquor late at night and “demons talking” to offer hope to others. “We all have negative thoughts,” he says. “And I know that somebody out there that’s gonna be listening to the song is gonna be feeling the way I once did. Like, ‘I can’t do whatever .’ I’ve felt that way too, and like the line, ‘sometimes I mute my emotions’–sometimes I have to quiet the noise, and do whatever you gotta do, because you’ve got to get through the day. I always tell myself, whenever I start feeling bad, ‘No matter what, the sun come up every day.’”

mamadi doumbouya

The Brothers Brown have themselves largely steered clear of serious legal jeopardy over the years, something they attribute to both growing up in the small town of Tupelo, Mississippi, which allowed them to avoid some of the potential pitfalls of big city life, and to their late pops. “RIP Big Floyd,” says Jxmmi, who explains that while their dad was in and out of prison as they were growing up, providing the boys with “a good example of what not to do,” he and their mother Bernadette also instilled in them the right values. “[They] tried to steer us towards school, and keep us busy in extracurricular activities. My dad always would tell us to work hard. Cut the grass, go around and make some type of money, always keep a job, be on time. That always kept us out of trouble.” Swae adds that he learned early on that life is a long game: “It’s not gonna be no ten-year thing, it’s a hundred-year thing! One-hundred twenty-year thing! So if you end it early on some dead-end shit…If you murder somebody, you’re going to jail, if you do this, do that, you’re going to jail. I didn’t want to take those risks for myself because I wanted so much from life.”

Tabloid headlines that swirled around both brothers last year, as well the mothers of two of their children, brought to mind Rae Sremmurd’s 2015 track “My X.” In Swae’s case, it was reported in September that he had filed for joint custody of his first child with his ex, a Brazilian model. Swae insists that the situation is “under control.” “We chilling, I got all the resources just to make shit smooth,” he says. “The kid needs a mom and a dad, so that’s how we gonna keep it rocking.” The stories around Slim Jxmmi were more serious. In January of last year, the rapper was arrested in Miami on misdemeanor battery charges after an alleged domestic dispute with the mother of his second child. The charges were later dropped, but the pair’s relationship was back in the spotlight last June—just prior to the initial anticipated release of Sremm 4 Life –following a public fight in Miami International Airport, after which the woman posted an allegation of “years” of emotional and physical abuse online. At the time, Jxmmi posted that there are “two sides to every story” on social media. Where do things stand between the two of you today? I ask. His answer: “I love both my kids’ mothers, and me and my second child’s mother, we’re in a great place.” He adds that he’s “not trying to win public opinion…I know that me and my baby mother, we love each other, we good. My kids are good, and now I just want to do what I need to do to take care of everybody.”

mamadi doumbouya

They may both be fathers of two, but neither brother is in a hurry to get married. “Never!” says Jxmmi to the idea, before softening his stance. “I don’t see the importance of marriage right now,” he says. “But that might change as I get older. Right now I’m just new to fatherhood and I just want to enjoy this part.” Swae is sporting a diamond-encrusted ring, and seems genuinely surprised when I inform him that it’s on his wedding finger–“Is it really?”—but he’s just as opposed to walking down the aisle. “I just don’t see the importance in signing something where somebody can just leave you and take half your money,” he explains, eye forever on the bag.

For the moment, anyway, they’re married to the grind, and happy to finally be getting the group back on the road–first at this month’s Coachella, then in Europe with Post Malone, and later in the year on their own long-overdue headlining tour of the States, armed with a sparkling new album’s worth of songs. “There’s so much more to SremmLife, and we’re gonna start putting out more,” says Swae. “We just want [the fans] to enjoy this album, make them feel good, make ‘em dance, make ’em feel different ways, and we hope that they enjoy it, top to bottom.”

Do we dare finish with the million-dollar question? Can we say with certainty that eventually there will be a fifth Rae Sremmurd album? Swae says yes, while his brother hedges.

“I can’t make any promises,” Jxmmi begins, “but I would hope there will be a SremmLife that we will speak on in the future. If it comes it comes.”

Swae swoops in with a valuable reminder: “There’s definitely a 5 , ’cause we contracted!”

“I think we done,” Jxmmi retorts.

“Nah,” teases his brother, laughing.

Jxmmi gets the final word: “Based on my past experience with this shit, I’m not gonna be hopeful about nothing, I’m just gonna keep rolling with the punches.”

We’ll let them work this out.

SCOPE Announces Rae Sremmurd, Kenny Mason as Artists for Spring Show

Max Scheinblum , Executive Editor February 23, 2023

DURHAM – The Student Committee On Popular Entertainment (SCOPE) has announced Rae Sremmurd and Kenny Mason as performers for its April 21 concert.

“This show feels amazing to drop,” said Harrison Flagg, SCOPE’s executive director. “We at SCOPE have been nose to the grindstone for months putting this together and are so happy to say this is going to be one of our biggest shows to date.”

The opener, Kenny Mason, is a rapper, singer-songwriter and producer who blends elements of grunge rock and hip hop in his diverse discography. After beginning a musical career at 19, the now 28-year-old broke out five years later upon the release of his single “Hit” in 2019. He has since released two albums, “Angelic Hoodrat” and “Ruff”, as well as featured on tracks like JID’s “Dance Now” and Dreamville Records’ “Stick”.

Headliner Rae Sremmurd is the hip hop duo of brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi. Hailing from Tupelo, Mississippi, the pair signed with Mike Will Made It’s Ear Drummers record label (“Rae” backwards is “Ear”, “Sremmurd” backwards is “Drummers”) in 2013. The success of their 2015 debut album “SremmLife”, which went certified platinum, allowed the group to create their own label, SremmLife Crew Records, in 2016 – the same year their second album “SremmLife 2” was released. Their third studio album, “SR3MM”, dropped in 2018.

Tracks like “This Could Be Us”, “No Type” and “Swang”, among others, have also gone platinum and charted on the acclaimed US Billboard Hot 100, as well as other international trackers. What is perhaps Rae Sremmurd’s most well known song, “Black Beatles”, backdropped  the viral mannequin challenge trend in 2016, causing it to be certified seven times platinum.  After a musical hiatus starting after 2018, the two have released five singles since last June in preparation for their upcoming album , tentatively titled “SremmLife 4”.

“Rae Sremmurd is releasing Sremmlife 4 soon and it couldn’t be better timing. Plus, Kenny being featured on the new Dreamville mixtape and JID’s new album is setting him up to skyrocket” Flagg said. “Both have been known to put on killer shows and now our minds are focused on setting it up for success.”

The ticketing process will remain the same as last semester’s show, with  online or in-person (MUB Ticket Office) sales beginning March 8 at 9 am. The costs are slightly different than in the Fall, with s tudent prices being $15 for bowl seats and $28 for the floor and public tickets being $49 for the bowl and $69 for the floor.

Flagg also anticipates collaboration with the Campus Activities Board (CAB), much like last spring’s A-Lot show , on bringing vendors to the Whitt to enhance the performance.

“We are super pumped to be collaborating with CAB on some hospitality for attendees – to be announced soon we hope,” he said. “They are going to add some sweet aspects to the show to put a fun twist in the typical Whitt experience.”

The concert also marks the second straight show back in UNH’s Whittemore Center, something not done since 2018-19 when the building hosted Cheat Codes and Lil Skies in the fall and Lil Baby and JID in the spring. SCOPE decided not to pursue another outdoor spring performance primarily due to the high costs associated with putting on such an event. The move, they say, will allow the group to focus on the artist experience inside the Whitt as they hope to build on the success of last November’s Lil Tjay-headlined show.

“Last semester’s show was a total blast. I would say being able to be back at the Whitt for the first time since 2019 was a huge success in itself and the fact that the show had such a huge turnout perpetuated the excitement,” Anna Robinson, SCOPE’s publicity director, wrote in a text. “While more than half the organization had never done a show in the Whitt before, it was a great experience for everyone and now we’re all fully confident and prepared for the spring show! RAE SREMMURD MAN SO STOKED.”

Everything you need to know about this year’s LDOC artists

rae sremmurd on tour

As the semester comes to an end, the final hurrah for most students is LDOC and its long-awaited concert. Duke University Union (DUU) has outdone themselves this year and planned a fantastic lineup . If you are curious about the artists that will be gracing Abele Quad April 24, look no further.

Our headliner, Swae Lee, comprises one half of the hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd, which he formed with his brother Slim Jxmmi. Rae Sremmurd produced many songs that characterized the mid-2010s, such as “ No Flex Zone ,” “ My X ,” “ This Could Be Us ,” “ Come Get Her ,” “ Swang ” and “ No Type .”

Their song “ Black Beatles ” (featuring Gucci Mane) sparked one of the most viral moments of 2016: the Mannequin Challenge (which everyone had better participate in when Lee performs!). Swae Lee’s songs were the backbone of TikTok precursor Musical.ly. Even almost ten years later, I can vividly picture Loren Gray and Baby Ariel lip-synching to these songs at 2x speed. Duke students will totally appreciate this nostalgia of a simpler time, AKA our middle school selves.

On top of his contributions to internet history via Rae Sremmurd, Lee has had a thriving solo career. He has collaborated with many artists to produce iconic hits: he guest featured on French Montana’s single “ Unforgettable ,” he received a Grammy nomination for co-writing Beyonce’s single “ Formation ,” he appeared on Nicki Minaj’s 2018 album “Queen” in the song “ Chun Swae ,” and my personal favorite is the single “ Close to Me ” with Ellie Goudling and Diplo. It is seriously the best workout song; try it.

Swae Lee’s most popular song is “ Sunflower ” (with Post Malone), which was released for the soundtrack of the film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018). In addition to Duke’s LDOC concert, Lee is also headlining at Yale’s Spring Fling this year.

The next artist, Elley Duhé, is a pop singer, boasting many hits with big-name producers and artists. During the 2024 Grammy Awards, she was awarded her first Grammy in Best Dance/Electronic Recording for the song “ Rumble .” Her most famous songs include “ Happy Now ” with Zedd, “ Bad Memories '' with MEDUZA, James Carter and FAST BOY, and “ Middle of the Night' ’, which went viral on TikTok in 2020. The virality of that song made Duhé popular on the platform; more than 400,000 users now follow her account . She is one of many artists — young, old, iconic or underground — who have accelerated their careers with viral sounds on TikTok.

My favorite song of Duhé’s is “ Tie Me Down ” with Gryffin. One fun fact about Duhé is that she blind-auditioned on an episode of “The Voice” in 2012, but ultimately was rejected by the judges. She’s come a long way since then, and being featured in Duke’s LDOC concert is a testament to her success!

The last artist performing during LDOC is Weston Estate, a North Carolina-based indie boy-band consisting of Srikar Nanduri, Manas Panchavati, Tanmay Joshi, Abhi Manhass and Marco Luka. They are representative of the Triangle Area college zeitgeist; members of Weston Estate have attended Duke (Luka), UNC (Joshi and Panchavati) and NC State (Nanduri and Manhass). Formed back in 2017, the band has since overcome their college rivalries to create great music.

Weston Estate’s most popular songs include “ Stoked ,” “ Pears ” and “ So Good ,” the latter of which boasts 21.4 million streams on Spotify. Their song “Pears” was featured in Season 3 Episode 4 of the Netflix series “Never Have I Ever.” They self-describe their band philosophy as “ optimistic nihilism ,” which aptly matches the vibes on campus as summer approaches. This was my first time hearing about them, but I am glad I did because “So Good” is totally a banger.

Overall, DUU has brought Duke a diverse bunch of artists to end the school year on a high note. I’ll definitely be trying to make front row at this concert.

Amanda Seales Addresses Rumored Issues With Issa Rae: ‘She Wasn't Empowering to Me’

On 'Club Shay Shay,' the 'Insecure' actress claims that the issues were provoked by Rae's publicist Vanessa Anderson.

Amanda Seales opened up about her long-rumored issues with Issa Rae on the latest episode of Club Shay Shay . In the interview, the comedian and actress claims that the issues were provoked by Rae's publicist Vanessa Anderson.

At the 26-minute mark of the episode's Part 2 , Seales spoke about the 2019 incident where she claims security and Rae's associates shouted at the Insecure actress to leave an Emmys event in Hollywood at Anderson's demand. At the time, Seales discussed getting kicked out of the party on her podcast and social media channels. Two days later, Seales says she was contacted by Rae, who denied that she was behind Anderson's request.

“And she called me and said, 'Hey, I heard what happened this weekend. I just want you to know I have nothing to do with it. Would you be willing to talk to Vanessa?'” Seales recalled.

Initially hesitant about the conversation, Anderson allegedly later admitted over the phone that she didn't like Seales. Seales said that she always intended to "protect" Rae, although the drama caused tension in their professional life as Insecure co-stars.

"So I've never talked about this publicly because it has always been incredibly important to me to protect Issa. Because I know that Issa is doing something within this business that so few people get to do. And it's not something I desire to do," she said. "I'm not interested in getting a $100 million production deal. That's not a life that I want for myself. But I know that her role is very important."

“I’m not petty, I’m not phony, I’m not going to hug people that are not my people.” The people’s favorite truth teller, Amanda Seales, stopped by the Club! Full episode drops on audio at midnight EST and streams on YouTube at noon EST tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/skvvgNMmmW — Club Shay Shay (@ClubShayShay) April 24, 2024

Seales alleges that this protection of Issa has opened the door for people to attack her.

"There's a whole narrative that is completely false that people keep spinning," she said. "They keep saying, you know, that I'm this mean girl on this set, that I harmed these people on this set."

Seales continued to deny these accusations against her.

"I just want to point out something very basic. How can I be a mean girl on a set that ain't my set? How? It's your show. You are my boss. I don't even have the capacity to be the mean girl here because you can fire me,” she added. "So there's no way for me to be a mean girl in this situation. And I know some people that may buck up against, like, the confirmation bias that they've created, but it simply is the truth."

Seales went on to claim that Rae did little to promote her show, Get Your Life , although it was a production of Rae's HOORAE Media .

“Like, I put all my money into it, I wrote it, I starred in it, etcetera. And so I said, 'Hey, you know, would you mind tweeting to correct this?' And she just wouldn't," Seales said. "She wouldn't promote any of the shows, you know? And I just felt like that was unfortunate. But it didn't make me, it didn't change my view of her character.”

The actress accused Anderson of running a "smear campaign" against her, and when asked to "intervene," Rae allegedly continued to refuse.

“So I said, you know, 'Listen, I am not saying that it's going to be a problem on set, but I do think it is a problem that you don't feel that you need to step in.' And she was like, 'Well, then we just have a difference in opinion...this is between y'all,'" Seales said of one of her last conversations with Rae about Anderson.

The tension eventually spilled over into the Insecure set.

“Nobody's saying nothing to me. Everybody knows, because at this time, it's just the women shooting. Everybody knows what's going on. They don't say nothing to me. And that's just fucking mean. It's mean,” Seales said.

According to Seales, there would be several more conversations, including another heart-to-heart between the two before the show's finale where Seales said Rae "came out her face at me one time too many."

“She wasn't empowering to me. She didn't feel like I was needed," Seales added. "She didn't feel like I deserved to be protected. I'm only giving a portion of the situation. But that was my experience. And nonetheless, I have still always protected her because I felt like it was my responsibility to do so. But it is not."
