Berlin’s Best Rail Escapes
Brian melican highlights some of the best train travel options from berlin….
O ne of the great things about rail travel in Europe has got to be the sheer sense of possibility that descends when you enter a big station in any major city. The UK is different – at London termini (with the exception of St. Pancras) every destination on the Departures board is somewhere in the United Kingdom; often, all of the destinations are even in the same region. After several years of frequent rail travel all around Europe, I still get a buzz from walking into a central station, realising that I could get to Denmark, Switzerland or France without ever having to change trains.
A great place to enjoy that feeling is Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof. The Departures board regularly shows destinations as diverse as Warsaw, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Budapest and Zürich.
All of these are places to which the majority of people in Berlin would probably never think of taking a train, but there are plenty of reasons to consider making better use of Berlin’s rail connections: not least because many are under threat or have already been axed. Anyone who wants Berlin’s beguiling range of destinations to remain as Deutsche Bahn cancels night trains and international services generally are given ever shorter shrift must stand up and be counted – with a ticket.
The greener amongst you, for example, will be well aware of the environmental benefits of taking the train, and the more adventurous will definitely be convinced by the promise of long boozy card games and plenty of “randomers” that just don’t take those low-cost, short-haul flights.
Then, there’s the fact that the price advantage monopolized by airlines for so long has continued to erode over the years, as the costs increase in everything from fuel prices to baggage fees. If you’re still not convinced, let’s look at which international destinations you can reach from Berlin, broken down by the hours it takes to get there.
Most of the destinations within two hours of Berlin are still in Germany. Although Hamburg , Hanover, Leipzig, and Dresden are definitely worth a visit in their own right, if you strike out east or northeast, you can make it to Poland in just about the same amount of time. One hour to the east is Frankfurt an der Oder , which straddles the Polish-German border, and anything after that is…well, east of the border. Frankfurt an der Oder is directly opposite the quaint Polish town of Slubice , with which it shares a friendly-next-door-neighbor connection in an effort to represent a new era of German-Polish relations. Sitting just across the water from one another, one can see how close the countries truly are in history, as well as in modern geography.
Alternatively, around two hours and one train change to the northeast lies Stettin (Polish: Szczecin ). The train ride to this interesting Hanseatic-cum-communist port town will take you through Uckermark, which notably spawned Angela Merkel. Beautiful valleys carry on to Usedom , the Baltic island shared by Germany and Poland, which boasts sandy shores and reed-side cottages.
Extending the radius out from Berlin by a few hours brings Prague within striking distance. There are good intercity train connections to the Czech capital via Dresden, offering a spectacularly picturesque stretch along the Elbe just after the city. A fascinating glimpse at the rural (read: often visibly dilapidated) parts of the Czech Republic before reaching Prague is to follow. Trust me, this is one journey for which you need not bring too many books.
Meanwhile, if you keep going east down the line from Frankfurt an der Oder, you’ll be in Poznan just three hours after leaving Berlin. From there, you can continue on to the stunningly well-preserved city of Wroclaw (in German: Breslau) in just a little over five hours after leaving Berlin. Old cathedrals, a town hall, and intimate streets often give the illusion of a pre-war Poland, despite Wroclaw’s long history and large contemporary population.
Spending almost half a waking day on a train might sound somewhat claustrophobic, but the six hours and fifty minutes from Berlin to Copenhagen (which you can also In Photos: Berlin-Copenhagen Cycle Route cycle, but it might take a bit longer) are anything but stuffy and boring. After passing through Hamburg, this specially-designed, diesel ICE train continues onto the rural Baltic island of Fehmarn, then straight onto a ferry.
During the half-hour crossing, passengers can leave the train to enjoy a little sea air on deck or to stock up on over-priced alcohol (read – expensive until you actually make it to Denmark). People who like machinery get an up-close-and-personal look at the axles and bogeys on the ICE. It’s an unusual, fun and ultimately very practical way to travel, giving you the chance to stretch your legs, while feeling that you’ve really “moved” from one place to another.
Furthermore, six hours is more than enough to get you to Warsaw , by travelling on the Frankfurt-Posnan line. There’s no chance of getting on the wrong train by accident, either, as the carriages are painted in a striking blue-white livery and carry the words “Berlin-Warszawa-Express” on the side.
Heading west, six hours’ travel will get you to Amsterdam without a change. Thanks to the new high-speed line between Cologne and Belgium, you can make it to Brussels in just under seven hours, as well! The landscape of this stretch over Europe’s northern lowlands demonstrates the rich soil and open land that give birth to some great hops and great cheese.
Eight hours
For the really hard-core railers amongst you, or just those with large amounts of reading to get through, the extra two hours are really worth it to make it to the following destinations. With the Öresund Bridge now open, there are connections from Copenhagen to most of Southern Sweden, putting the country’s bustling third city Malmö only seven hours or so away from Berlin; its second most magnificent city, Gothenburg, is now just over ten hours away. There’s even a sleeper service as far as Malmö in the summer months, which put Stockholm in reach with a connection the following morning.
Going further into Poland, eight hours plus opens up the rather alluring possibility of Cracow, a true gem of a city that is still valiantly resisting the Easyjet hordes. Known for its deep connection to the Pope John Paul II, jazz, and film, Cracow has the historical allure and coziness of an old European town with the youthful vibe of a Western counterpart to Warsaw.
Additionally, a judicious change at either Brussels or Frankfurt can put you in Paris for a day’s rail travel. There really is something very old-world and civilised about the idea of breakfasting in Berlin and dining in Paris after a train journey, isn’t there? This is the kind of thing that should be done with an ivory cigarette holder… The same is true of London , which is just over eight hours away (longer than it really should be thanks to Eurostar baggage and passport controls). However, you of course gain an hour by going back a time zone, so dinner doesn’t have to be too late, relatively speaking.
To the South, Zürich is suddenly within your grasp at eight hours and twenty-eight minutes with a change at Basel. If you fancy some mountain scenery, changing in Zürich can even get you into Northern Italy before the day’s end. Snow-capped peaks and cows with bells – not purple, unfortunately – are hard to beat.
Once double-digit hour counts are allowed, there’s also the possibility of carrying on from Prague down to Vienna and Bratislava (formerly without even changing trains, now with at least one swap). Budapest , however, can still be reached from Berlin without having to move your suitcase: the connections leaves Hauptbahnhof at Berlin at 46 past every second hour and roll into the Hungarian capital at 11 hours and 49 minutes later. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but for the statistics freaks amongst you, all of this means that fourteen – count’ em – countries are within a day’s rail travel of Berlin: Denmark, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK.
On that note, the longest one-day journey I have ever undertaken by rail was from Edinburgh to Hamburg, which had me leaving at 8:00 and arriving at 24:00. For all my love of train travel, this was admittedly about the limit of what one pair of legs could stand up to or, well, sit down to in one day. Nevertheless, it just goes to show what is possible by rail travel (even if not the most pleasant).
A cracking way to make this kind of sixteen-hour mission of a train journey into what feels more like a four or five hour jaunt is of course to take a night train, yet their numbers have been dwindling in recent years. In December 2013, the SNCF-RENFE sleeper services from Paris to Madrid and Barcelona were axed, followed twelve months later by the core plank of European night trains, Deutsche Bahn’s Berlin-Paris City Night Liner. Yet, in time for summer 2015, Russian State Railways have stepped into the breach, re-timetabling their mammoth Moscow-Paris service to do the Berlin-Hauptbahnhof to Paris-Est leg overnight. Russia doing something for European integration? You saw it here first!
All sorts of routes are now once again conceivable: imagine Berlin to Barcelona in under twenty-four hours, without the stress of an airport, and a dinner in a dining car thrown in? Sounds like a deal! I’ll just get my pack of cards and my ivory cigarette holder…

Bohemian Highlights (End End Frankfurt, 14 Days)
I have traveled with Trafalgar previously. On this trip the hotel accommodations we sub-standard. The NH Hotel Chain rooms were dirty and so tiny you could not put your suitcase anywhere on the floor and get to the bed without jumping over the case. Two people could not pass the foot of the beds. The walls were dirty and one of the guests rooms had not been cleaned as there was hair on the pillowcase and trash on the floor. This hotel chain seemed to be a favorite of Trafalgar, probably since the rooms are cheap. On a previous Trafalgar trip the accommodations were excellent. The hotel accommodations will definitely be checked out with more scrutiny or we will go with another travel group as I did not pay for such low class accommodations. BTW, The tour director was excellent. Also we began in Frankfurt and ended in Frankfurt, so had 2 whole travel days traveling to and from Frankfurt. Tour should have begun in Berlin and ended in Prague as there is not much to see or do in Frankfurt or in between.

The Best of Eastern Europe
This was a great tour made wonderful by our tour guide Zdenka. She knew these countries so well, she wanted us to see everything possible and she made it happen! Our bus driver, Gaspy, kept us safe and on time. Would recommend this tour, you learn so much and the countries visited were so beautiful and welcoming. This is the first time that Globus gave us a couple small, quirky new hotels that were not comfortable. Please Globus stick to regular hotels that have great staff. if the hotels are far from city center please give us transportation there and back on our afternoons off whenever possible.

Bohemian Europe Group Rail Tour (18-35)
This was my second tour with Euroventure and I can't complain about anything - they are a great team who organise everything for you and can answer any questions you might have about the trip, what's included, how to get to hostels and activities etc. Having David, the tour leader, with us took away the stress of making sure we got to places/transfers on time and keeping our tickets etc safe. He was a brilliant leader who made the effort to get to know each of us in the group individually and aimed to help the group get to know each other too. Going on a tour has been great for meeting new people who I hope to stay in touch with in the future, and it means that we grew to trust each other and had loads of fun! Would highly recommend going on a tour, whichever one you choose - but make sure it's with Euroventure!

The trip exceeded my expectations. The group I was in was a perfect fit. We opted to stick together more than being on our own. Mandy, our CEO, did a magnificent job. She is organized, patient and is incredibly personable. She took care of us every step of the way. I would definitely recommend G Adventures to family and friends and it is highly likely that I will plan another trip with G next summer.
Essential Four
Had great time, well organized and our first tour ever. Would recommend and do it again.
From Berlin to Rome
My daughter and I enjoyed taking a tour with Europamundo. Europamundo had great customer service. Hotel accommodation was good. Local guides were very knowledgeable. All tour guides were helpful, cheerful and knowledgeable. I was little disappointed once we finished our Berlin City tour to return to hotel on our own. It cost us 28 Euro to return to our hotel. Same thing happened in Rome again. After having a City tour and an optional Vatican tour in Rome, it cost us 35 Euro to return to hotel. We were too tired to ride three trains, buses and walking. We thought city transportations were included in our purchased tour. Overal, we had great time and we enjoyed exploring Europe. I believe additional transportations should have been provided both in Berlin and in Rome. We liked the breakfast buffet specially in Berlin. We will take tour with Europamundo again and I will recommend this tour to my friends.

And because of a very new high-speed “ICE” rail line which opened up at the end of 2017 traveling from Munich to Berlin is easy and fast.
The tour includes a 2nd-class ticket for the new high-speed train line from Munich to Berlin (see the tableau this is already included in the price of your tour ). You will be on an all-day escorted coach tour which will first take you to Oberammergau for a photo stop (you may want take a look at the Festival Hall where the Passion Play takes place every ten years.) The coach will then take you to Linderhof Palace , the Royal Villa of King Ludwig II. The Palace and Park were inspired by Versailles and the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished. Your luxury coach will take you back to Munich where you will arrive in time for dinner.
DAY 4 Alp Mountains or Dachau Memorial Site/ Munich
Today you have a choice of what you prefer to do: Option 1 is a rail tour into the Alp Mountains . Option 2 is a visit of the KZ Dachau Memorial Site (please see the information below). Option 3 is to stay in Munich for another day of sightseeing there.
If you choose Option 1 you will do a rail tour into the Alp Mountains (which are located south of Munich) you will travel to Garmisch-Partenkirchen . By direct regional rail it takes about 75 minutes to Garmisch-Partenkirchen – the alpine mountain resort is located close to the border to Austria and in midst a beautiful mountain scenery on the foot of Germany´s highest mountain – the “ Zugspitze ” (2971m, 9714ft.).
You can do some sightseeing in town or – if the weather is nice – visit the Zugspitze (ticket from Garmisch-Partenkirchen can be purchased right at the rail station). Another option is to take a beautiful hike into the neighboring mountains Kreutzeck (5,417 ft.) and Osterfeldkopf. Here you can walk on the AlpspiX (which is free of charge): two steel beams form a floating X over a vertical drop of more than 3,000 ft.. You have great views of the “ Höllental ” below and also of the (mostly) snow covered Zugspitze which is just across from the Osterfeldkopf. For details about this day trip please also see Thomas’s Blog: Alp Mountains (Zugspitz area) – Daytrip by Rail from Munich .
If the weather is not so nice you may want to stay in town and visit some of the sights in the Old Town or close by. In 1936 the Winter Olympic Games took place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and each year a variety of Nordic and alpine World Ski races are held here. The Olympic Ski Stadium was built by the Nazi Regime. It is just outside of town but you can also take a public bus to the stadium ( fare is covered by the ticket you are holding). Just a couple of walking minutes from the Olympic Ski Jump you will find the Partnach Gorge , definitely worth a visit. The gorgeous gorge has been formed by the Partnach, a mountain stream – you may want to take a light rain jacket when going in there!
Garmisch-Partenkirchen Main Station © Thomas H. Giesick
If you choose Option 2 you will visit the KZ Dachau Memorial Site which was the first Concentration Camp of Nazi Germany, soon erected after Hitler came into power in 1933. Rail to Dachau and the bus to the Memorial Site is included in the price of the tour, admission to the Memorial Site is free . At the site you may join an English-speaking tour organized by volunteers working for the memorial site or get an audio guide which is available in English. The 22-minute documentary “ The Dachau Concentration Camp ” is shown in English several times a day (free of charge). Including the travel time from/to Munich Central Station you need about 4-5 hours for a visit. For more detailed information you may also want to look at our Blog “ Dachau memorial site – daytrip by rail from Munich ”.

Day 5 Berlin
By high-speed “ICE” train you will travel from Munich to Berlin . Travel time is about 4.5 hours and along this rail journey you will travel from Bavaria, located all the way in the south of Germany, to the north east, where Germany´s Capital City is located. The direct train will run along a new high-speed route which was completed in December 2017. This route runs by Nuremberg , Bamberg , Erfurt , Leipzig and Lutherstadt Wittenberg . All of those towns are worth a visit and if you are interested to spend a day or two in one of those beautiful cities please let us know and we will be happy to extend this tour for you.
Brandenburg Gate, Reichtags Building and Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin © Thomas H. Giesick
Your hotel is in walking distance from the station . Drop off your baggage at your hotel and you are ready to go! Germany´s capital city is a great and dynamic metropolis. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990 changed the city in many ways. Berlin fascinates visitors it’s culture and history are unique. Your tour includes the 96 hour Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card . With this card you will have discounts to 200 museums, city tours and attractions and it includes a pass for unlimited free use of the Berlin public transportation system .
Day 6 Berlin
You may want to start this day by joining a free English-speaking 2.5 hours walking tour of Berlin (information on how to reserve this tour will be provided) There are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card today. With your tour package you will receive Berlin Walking tour suggestions as well as information about the public buses “ M100 ” and “ M200 ”: the buses are public double decker buses which cover many sights of Berlin and are a perfect way to explore the city by hopping on and off those buses. They run very frequently all day from 5am until midnight and if you take both routes you will have a circle taking you from the Center of former East Berlin (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”) to the Center of former West Berlin (“Bahnhof Zoo”, “Ku´damm” shopping area ). Bus M200 takes you south of the “ Tiergarten ” to West Berlin´s Bahnhof Zoo where you may want to visit the “ Gedachtniskirche ” (Memorial Church) as well as the KaDeWe , continental Europe´s largest compartment store, which is located close to the Ku´damm. Bus M100 takes you back through the Tiergarten and partly north of it, passing the “ Siegessaule ” (Victory Column), Bellevue Palace (built in 1786 for the younger brother of Friedrich II, Ferdinand of Prussia, today: seat of the Germany´s President), the Reichstag (German Parliament), the Brandenburg Gate and the Museum Island back to Berlin Alexanderplatz.
Day 7 Potsdam or Memorial Sachsenhausen/ Berlin
Today you have a another choice of what you prefer to do: Option 1 is a rail tour into Potsdam (which is located about 25 minutes west of Berlin. Option 2 is a rail tour into Oranienburg (which is located about 30 minutes north of Berlin) for a visit of the Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen (please see the information below). Option 3 is to stay in Berlin for another day of sightseeing there.
If you are interested in beautiful Palaces and Gardens you may want to choose Option 1 for a visit of Potsdam , Capital of the State of Brandenburg . The city was built by the Prussian Kings within a lake area and with its many cultural landmarks, in particular the Palaces of Sanssouci located in midst beautiful parks . Rail to Potsdam and back to Berlin (as well as public transportation by tram and buses within the city of Potsdam) are covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card .
If you are interested in the infamous history during WWII you may want to choose Option 2 for a visit of the Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen . The memorial site is located in the city of Oranienburg – just outside of Berlin. The Concentration Camp (“KZ”) in Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen was built as the role-model for many Concentration Camps in Germany and Central Europe. You will need about half a day for the trip to the Memorial Site (see Day 7 of our History Rail Tour “ Fascination and Terror –Rise and Fall of the Third Reich ” for more detailed information). Admission to Sachsenhausen is free and public transportation by rail/bus is covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card.
When you are back in Berlin : a nice way to see Berlin is by foot. Your tour package includes a suggestion for a free English-speaking walking tour of Berlin as well as walking suggestions for the area around the Brandenburg Gate , in case you would like to discover the city on your own. From the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag (German Parliament) the walking tour passes by the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe , to Berlin´s new city center, the “ Potsdamer Platz ”, to “ Checkpoint Charlie ”, to East Berlin´s Culture- and Shopping Street “Friedrichstrasse” (site of the “golden twenties”), to the “Gendarmenmarkt”, where the German and French Cathedrals are located, via the promenade street “Unter den Linden ” to the Museum Island .
The remains of the wall can be visited at Berlin´s East Side Gallery where parts of the wall have been turned into a piece of art. We went on a trip to Germany from 31 Dec 22 for 12 days. Based on the “8-DAY CITY DUO MUNICH, BERLIN” tour package, Thomas had provided very good recommendations and helped to further customise the itinerary to meet our needs and interest. We had touched down in Munich on NYE to experience the year end celebrations. We then took the ICE train to Berlin the following day and started the tour from Berlin. Thomas had included Dresden, Nuremburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber as part of our travel itinerary before we returned to Munich again to complete the tour. The trip was very well planned and organised. The tickets, vouchers, city and places of interest information, hotel and transportation arrangements were sent to us 1-2 weeks before our trip began. During the trip, when we sought advice via email from Thomas and team with regard to the trip and places to visit, they had been very helpful and prompt in replying to us. We had a wonderful time and we would recommend To-Europe.com services to our friends. A big thank you to Thomas, Woldemar and Marie! Regards, Florence & family, Singapore
