25 best all-inclusive resorts in the world, according to frequent travelers

Tanner Saunders

Editor's Note

Editor's note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Listen up: All-inclusive resorts have changed for the better. We think it's well worth considering a visit to one for a seamless vacation where you know exactly what you have to pay — upfront. Today's best all-inclusive resorts no longer offer bland food, watered-down drinks and rundown accommodations in serious need of renovation.

Even better, the very best all-inclusive resorts truly span the globe, from the beaches of Mexico to the sandy deserts of Dubai and even a few great ones in the U.S .

From all-inclusive resorts perfect for honeymooners to something more family-friendly, our curated list has it all. Not to mention some beautiful luxury all-inclusive resorts that will take your vacation to the next level.

Even if you've been to an all-inclusive resort before, there are still common mistakes you should avoid . But the biggest mistake you can make is not giving all-inclusive resorts a chance in the first place.

Staying in an overwater bungalow is at the top of many travelers' must-experience lists, but did you know you don't have to travel all the way to the Maldives or Bora Bora to experience it? You can actually stay in one at the all-inclusive, adults-only Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Not only do you get that dreamy overwater bungalow, but the bungalows are actually built into the shape of a heart on a private island off the main resort.

Beyond that, guests can enjoy food ranging from Thai to French and Indian to Caribbean at nine different restaurants on the property, as well as premium liquor at most of the on-site bars. Add that to top-notch pools, water and land activities like land chess and volleyball, live entertainment, and the option to get PADI scuba certified, and what else could you possibly need?

But if you do need more, guests can also access all the food and activities at the property's sister resort, Sandals Montego Bay.

Rates at Sandals Royal Caribbean start at $277 per person per night.

Part of Hyatt's new high-end all-inclusive brand , Secrets Impression Moxche, is one that our reviewer said might be the "best all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen." It's easy to see why when you look at the fact that this stunning resort only offers suites; those suites start at nearly 1,000 square feet and include options with outdoor hot tubs, beautiful views of the ocean and even a two-story penthouse that feels like it's fit for royalty.

If you decide to leave your beautiful rooms, there's plenty to do: Explore the resort's hidden coves and cenotes, dance in a tucked-away speak-easy, go snorkeling to get face-to-face with exotic sea life, head to the spa for a relaxing treatment or just relax by the pool and soak up the sun. Just don't forget to look at the entertainment calendar so you don't miss live music, pool volleyball and more.

But what really sets this resort apart is its dedication to great food, which ranges from fine French dining to an open-fire grill and even a modern Japanese restaurant with teppanyaki tables. Just be sure to stop by Teodoro for a seven-course dining experience unlike anything you've had at an all-inclusive resort before. (Extra fees apply at certain restaurants.)

Rates at Secrets Impression Moxche start at $800 per night, based on double occupancy. As a Category F in Hyatt's all-inclusive chart, award nights can be found between 42,000 and 58,000 points per night.

There are many reasons to love this adults-only, luxury Hyatt resort on the rugged coast of California. One major reason is that, back in 2020, it converted to an all-inclusive model . The 59 guest rooms and suites are chic and cozy. Each comes with a balcony or private deck, scenic views, a stocked minibar, a walk-in shower and a soaking tub. Many rooms even have fireplaces and hot tubs.

With Ventana's inclusive offerings, guests can enjoy modern American meals at The Sur House , which uses local ingredients and organic produce grown on the property. Just note that alcohol is not included in the package. Guests can unwind with yoga, daily hikes or reserved access to indoor or outdoor wellness studios. Take the day to chill in the sun at one of the pools, slip away to the Japanese hot baths for some mountainside serenity or hit up Spa Alila — the first in the U.S. — for a Body Renewal Ritual starting at $330.

Rates at Alila Ventana Big Sur start around $1,300 per night for double occupancy, including all meals and various activities. World of Hyatt members can book this Category 8 property from 35,000 to 45,000 points per night.

At Hyatt's sister Zilara and Ziva resorts in Cap Cana (an upscale, gated resort area in Punta Cana), adults can take advantage of both areas of the dual-branded property. Children are restricted to the Ziva side. Kids (and kids at heart) will enjoy the Canapolis Waterpark, which has a handful of adrenaline-inducing slides. Adults looking for something more relaxing can hit up the cenote-inspired spa .

The resort is truly massive, with more than 700 ocean-view suites split between Ziva and Zilara; these include swim-up suites, one-bedroom options and even rooms with direct beach access. There are almost more restaurants and bars than you can imagine. Some highlights are French-Polynesian restaurant Brando's, an Indian restaurant in a trainlike setting and an Asian joint with teppan grills. There are also multiple buffets and coffee shops as well as beach, pool, sports and martini bars. Also, 24-hour room service will help with those late-night cravings.

Rates for Hyatt Zilara and Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana start at $539, based on double occupancy. As a Hyatt All-Inclusive Category E property, award nights are 35,000 to 45,000 points per night for double occupancy. Additional guests require an additional 17,500 to 23,000 points per person per night.

Dubai is known for its towering skyscrapers and over-the-top hotels. However, just 45 minutes outside of the overwhelming hustle and bustle is a desert oasis where guests can bask in the heat of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve or go for a sand-filled adventure. At this resort, part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, each of the 42 suites features a plunge pool, a private deck and the utmost privacy. Plus, they come with the chance to see gazelles and Arabian oryxes roaming in the wild.

While visiting, take a camel ride through the desert, learn the art of falconry or go on a desert drive to see some wildlife. If you need to relax, opt for a specialized treatment from the Timeless Spa — just don't forget that two desert activities are included with full board.

Don't worry about going hungry — food is a serious business at Al Maha. Dining options are more gourmet than you might expect from an all-inclusive resort. Al Diwaan , the international restaurant, serves three meals a day with views of the reserve. Hajar Terrace Bar is the perfect place to sit back and take in the power of the desert, drink in hand.

Rates at Al Maha start around $960 a night for double occupancy or 94,000 Marriott Bonvoy points a night.

Grand Velas Los Cabos has a lot to offer guests spending a few nights in Baja California. It's an all-suite property where every room has stunning ocean views, a spa-style bathroom with a Jacuzzi and a large terrace to soak up the salty air.

Outside the rooms, guests can enjoy delicious food from seven upscale restaurants. Options include a 10-course tasting menu of international flavors at Cocina de Autor; French, Mexican and Italian spots; and a buffet.

The resort also offers Mexican cooking classes, yoga and a kids club. Paid activities range from whale watching to off-roading on all-terrain vehicles to camel excursions on the beach. Undercurrents prevent swimming at the resort's beach, but there are three infinity pools — including a family-friendly one — overlooking the ocean. At the 35,000-square-foot SE Spa by Grand Velas , a spa valet can make all your wellness dreams come true.

Rates at Grand Velas Los Cabos start at $1,295 a night, based on double occupancy.

When we sent a reviewer to Hilton Rose Hall in 2021, he was impressed enough to give it our "recommended" seal of approval — and it's easy to see why. The property boasts a beautiful, well-maintained beach, free nonmotorized water sports equipment (like kayaks and water tricycles), tennis and basketball courts, a 24-hour fitness center and plenty of entertainment, such as karaoke and DJs.

A great resort for families , it has everything the kiddos could want, including a massive 280-foot waterslide at Sugar Mill Falls, the on-site water park (and one of the largest in Jamaica). Across its nine bars and restaurants, even the pickiest eaters are sure to find something they love; among the options are Italian fare, Caribbean classics and an American burger bar. For adults, a swim-up pool bar slings island favorites during the day, while an open-air cocktail bar is a great place to end the night.

Rates at Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa start as low as $325 a night, based on double occupancy, while Hilton Honors members can book an award night starting at 74,000 points.

You might be surprised to learn that there are a handful of deluxe all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. Castle Hot Springs — a grand desert oasis about an hour north of Phoenix — is one of the best. Its 30 stand-alone bungalows and cabins are tucked away in a lush setting full of palm trees spread across 1,100 acres. Dating back to the late 1800s, the resort's natural hot springs (which range from 86 to 106 degrees) have been helping people stay healthy and relaxed for decades.

Stays at Castle Hot Springs include breakfast, lunch and a five-course tasting menu for dinner each evening, all crafted with select ingredients grown at the resort. A $25 daily drink credit is available per guest. The rate also includes activities like yoga, meditation, farm tours, guided hikes and exclusive access to the hot springs. Additional experiences are available for a fee, including spa and wellness treatments; more adventurous options include UTV tours and the elevated adventure course and aerial walkway.

Rates at Castle Hot Springs start at $1,400 per night, based on double occupancy. Two- and three-night minimums are required for most dates and the resort is closed seasonally for most of July and August.

All-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica just hit different, thanks to the combination of beautiful beaches and tropical rainforests. At the Westin Reserva Conchal resort, you get the best of both. Set on 2,400 acres, the resort has a lagoon-style pool and access to a championship golf course, tennis courts and pristine beaches.

With 406 rooms — ranging from entry-level deluxe junior suites with a balcony to club-level suites (with access to the club lounge and private pool) and larger family suites — there's plenty of room for the entire family to spread out. Families can take advantage of the kids club or go for a three-hour hike in the rainforest. The resort fields a handful of bars and restaurants, including a barbecue joint, seafood options and a steakhouse.

Rates at The Westin Reserva Conchal start at $522 a night while Marriott Bonvoy members can book an award night starting at 71,500 points, both based on double occupancy.

In Mexico, Hilton has been opening new hotels left and right, one of which is Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort. Each of the resort's 715 guest rooms and suites has a balcony. Also, select premium suites offer swim-up pools and extra outdoor space. The crafts of local artisans inspire the rooms' decor, which is full of modern touches like subtle pops of color and plenty of charging ports.

Activities abound at this Hilton. Guests can partake in arts and crafts, sports on the beach, nightly fiestas with music and themed parties. As a great resort for families, a kids club is available to occupy young children, as is a designated family pool with a splash playground. A teen club is available for the older ones, too. This resort shares grounds and some facilities with the new, ultraluxe Waldorf Astoria Cancun .

With 12 dining options , there's a meal for every appetite. There is traditional Mexican food at Maxal, wood-fired pizza at Italian trattoria La Luce, a Southeast Asian-inspired menu at Auma, and unlimited ice cream and churros at La Churreria.

Rates at Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort start at $297 a night, based on double occupancy, while Hilton Honors members can book an award night starting at 85,000 points.

Believe it or not, the Hudson Valley is home to a picture-perfect, fairytale-like castle that offers year-round fun for the whole family (or a dreamy romantic retreat). This all-inclusive resort sits just 90 minutes from New York City.

Mohonk Mountain House, which dates back to 1869, is set within 40,000 acres of forest. It offers ample space for hiking, horseback riding, learning archery or ax throwing, and canoeing on the lake (where you can bask in the faux Victorian castle's beauty).

Guests at Mohonk receive three included meals a day (alcohol is additional) from an upscale buffet or one of the specialty restaurants. The Main Dining Room has breathtaking views of the Catskill Mountains to accompany the farm-to-table dishes and wine pairings.

A treatment from the spa is not included, but worth the splurge. The 60-minute Mohonk Red massage treatment ($240), which uses the distinct "Mohonk Red" witch hazel growing on the property, is a highlight.

When you enter your room, you'll immediately be transported back to the grand days of the past thanks to traditional decor; gilt wallpaper, sturdy wooden furniture, and views of the forest and mountains create a memorable ambience. The move here is to opt for a room with a balcony and fireplace, like one of the Victorian Rooms , so you can have a special experience. If you're worried about getting the fire going, ring reception; they'll send someone up to do it for you.

Rates at Mohonk Mountain House are typically over $1,000 a night, based on double occupancy. Kids under 12 stay and eat for free during select weeks each year (limited to one child per adult guest, two children maximum).

If you want a tailor-made luxe experience and one that's all-inclusive, look no further than Nihi Sumba, one of the world's dreamiest — and most talked about — resorts . It's a little tough to get to (because it requires a trip to Bali and a connecting flight to Tambolaka Airport as well as a more-than-hourlong car ride or a private helicopter transport). Still, the jet lag quickly fades away once you settle in one of the resort's 27 villas. Villas have a private pool, canopy beds, views of the Indian Ocean and even handmade chocolate waiting in the minifridge.

Guests who check into Nihi Sumba can eat at Ombak, an open-air, sandy-floored restaurant serving a la carte breakfast and dinner. Or, they can enjoy fresh-caught fish and pizza made with organic ingredients grown by the property at Nio Beach Club & Pool.

As for activities, it's impossible to decide between swimming with horses , stand-up paddleboarding in the crystal-clear water, hiking to a beautiful waterfall and just lazing by the pool. Luckily, you don't have to choose — the resort wants you to have it all (though some activities are an extra expense).

Rates at Nihi Sumba start at $1,075 during the shoulder season and $1,795 during the high season per villa, per night, based on double occupancy.

Hyatt's wellness-centered Miraval brand has three locations across the country, and we're big fans of all of them. We're exceptionally smitten with the baronial outpost in the Berkshires, though. At this adults-only resort, focusing on yourself is the primary task of any visit. Rates include "life-enhancing wellbeing activities" such as yoga, hiking, aqua barre classes in the pool and nutrition classes. Paid experiences include pottery, archery and even therapeutic sessions with horses.

Accommodations at Miraval Berkshires range from spa-inspired guest rooms stocked with Tibetan singing bowls and meditation cushions to 600-square-foot suites with balconies. The resort's newest offering, Wyndhurst Mansion , is a Gilded Age stunner with 10 rooms and suites named after famed writers. Rates include three meals daily at the health-conscious restaurant Harvest Moon or through in-room dining. For an extra fee, head to 1894 for a four-course prix fixe menu with dishes like black truffle risotto and dry-aged bison rib-eye served through an interactive experience.

Rates at Miraval Berkshires start at $1,386 per night or 57,500 or 72,000 points per night, both based on double occupancy. Note that every award booking includes a $175 resort credit per person.

If you're looking to escape the party scene of Cancun, give Puerto Vallarta a chance — and book a great stay at this towering Hilton all-inclusive resort. It has 444 rooms and suites, each of which has a private balcony and ocean views. For an exclusive-feeling experience, book a club-level room to access a private check-in area, the club lounge and its daily happy hour.

Take a culinary trip around the world by visiting the resort's Italian, Asian and Mexican restaurants, or grab a juicy steak at Seasalt steakhouse . Like all the best all-inclusive resorts, room service is available 24/7.

By day, catch some rays by the pool or on the beach; at night, hit up the sunset pool party for dancing or attend the evening fiesta for live entertainment. If you'd rather take it slow, visit the Eforea Spa to sweat away the day in the steam room or get a Hawaiian-inspired, deep-tissue massage.

Rates at Hilton Vallarta Riviera All-Inclusive Resort start at $366 a night or 91,000 points per night , based on double occupancy.

St. Lucia is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, and Jade Mountain — an independent resort offering all-inclusive pricing options — might be one of the most beautiful resorts. There are picture-perfect views of the island and its geological splendors from each of the 24 unique "sanctuaries," or suites. Every accommodation (except for whirlpool suites) also includes a large private infinity pool, 15-foot-high ceilings and an open fourth wall to allow for unobstructed views of paradise.

Meals of "tropical cuisine" are served around an infinity pool at Jade Mountain Club , helmed by James Beard Award-winning chef Allen Susser. At the Kai en Ciel spa, couples can indulge in "The Alchemy of Two;" it's a 110-minute experience ($595) that unites the loving duo through massages, poetry and handcrafted chocolates. Couples who want to take their Jade Mountain stay to the next level can book the "Total Romance" package. It starts at $6,980 for a three-night stay, and it includes three meals daily, most alcoholic drinks, a bottle of Champagne, a snorkel trip, a scuba diving lesson, one-hour massages, jungle biking, a yacht sail and more.

Rates at Jade Mountain start at $1,795 per night based on double occupancy.

Tucked away in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Blackberry Farm is a 4,200-acre estate that's one part working farm, one part designer hotel and one part culinary destination that attracts visitors from all over the world to East Tennessee. Stays here include all meals, from dinner on the night of arrival through lunch on the day of checkout. Menus consist of "Blackberry Farm's Foothills Cuisine," made with local products and seasonal ingredients grown in the 4-acre garden.

There are just 69 accommodations. They range from Historic Rooms decorated with period pieces to Hill Cottages, which average 1,080 square feet and feature fireplaces, front porch rocking chairs and a personal golf cart.

For bigger groups, book a self-contained house that has three to five bedrooms . Beyond simply coming for the mouthwatering food, activities abound (many of which cost an extra fee). Go hiking, fly-fishing, horseback riding or cycling, or do yoga. You can even try your hand at shooting sporting clays. There's a spa with a slew of rejuvenating wellness treatments and even concerts with major headliners (like the country group Little Big Town) scheduled throughout the year.

Nightly rates at Blackberry Farm start at $1,045 per night and require a three-night minimum stay.

Booking an all-inclusive resort in Cancun can be tough because of the sheer number of options, but for an upscale all-inclusive experience, look no further than Excellence Playa Mujeres. Every room is a suite and includes picture windows, outdoor spaces, a romantic oversized Jacuzzi, a rainfall shower and natural design elements.

There's even a club-level option that offers upgraded amenities like Bulgari bath products and top-shelf liquors (not to mention access to a private beach and pools, and the club lounge).

At the resort, dining options include The Lobster House , a restaurant specializing in juicy crustaceans. There is classic French fare at Chez Isabelle and bold Mexican cuisine at Agave. Stop at the lobby bar, Martini, for a stiff take on the eponymous classic or enjoy a handful of other bars dotting the resort.

With a total of seven pools and a beach, there are plenty of loungers to go around. For even more fun, borrow snorkeling gear, take a dance or Spanish lesson, or head to the theater (and its Stars bar) for a night of live entertainment. When you need some "me time," head to the Miile Spa for a treatment.

Rates at Excellence Playa Mujeres start at $573 a night, based on double occupancy.

South of Cancun in Playa Del Carmen, this Hilton adults-only all-inclusive resort checks all the boxes for travelers who want to show up and let the hotel take care of every detail for them. Thanks to the 14 bars and restaurants — including sushi at Asiana, multiple Mexican restaurants and even an outdoor tequila bar — there's no chance you'll go hungry. With an Olympic-size pool, live entertainment, a rooftop tennis court, dancing lessons and the Innan Spa, you'll also never be bored.

When it's time to retreat to the room, you'll be comfortable no matter which type of room you choose. You can crash in an entry-level, 653-square-foot junior suite with a 55-inch TV, furnished patio and whirlpool spa, or a beachfront walkout suite that allows you to open your doors to the salty air and sounds of crashing waves. Even better, 24-hour room service and an in-room bar restocked daily mean you technically never have to leave the suite if you don't want to.

Rates at Hilton Playa Del Carmen start at $223 a night or 51,000 Hilton Honors points, based on double occupancy.

Not everyone loves the all-inclusive spirit, but at Vermont's Twin Farms, the experience is so unique that even the biggest naysayer will fall in love.

Guests can find seclusion in the 28 individually designed suites, cottages and treehouses decorated with art that stands well above what you'd find in a regular hotel. The various design aesthetics look like they came straight from the pages of a fashion magazine. In addition to rooms, the all-inclusive experience includes meals, wines and spirits at the restaurant or in your suite or cottage. You can even order lunch to be served as a picnic anywhere on the 300-acre property.

Guests can take advantage of the resort's long activity list, which includes canoeing, kayaking, fly-fishing, snowshoeing, sledding and even skiing on Twin Farms' private mountain — necessary equipment and instruction included.

At the fitness center, yoga classes and Peloton bikes are on offer. Meanwhile, the Bridge House Spa's menu includes facials, massages and in-room rituals for an extra fee. To really let it all go, especially if you visit in the snowy winter, make sure to go for a soak in the Japanese ofuro — a unique experience that's included with your stay.

Rates at Twin Farms start at $2,600, based on double occupancy.

Hotels and resorts are a dime a dozen in the Cabo area, but Hyatt's Ziva resort is one of the best all-inclusive options. Thanks to World of Hyatt's generous points chart, it's also one of the best places to burn some Hyatt points for a memorable vacation.

This Ziva has seven restaurants and seven bars to indulge at. Whether you're getting dinner with a show at the Japanese restaurant Dozo or eating fresh grilled seafood at beachside Cortez, know you'll go to bed full.

With 591 rooms and suites to choose from, guests can stay in a standard 584-square-foot master king or master double with a furnished balcony and hydro-massage bathtub, or they can opt for a club-level suite, which includes swim-up options, a private check-in area and access to the club lounge.

For families, the KidZ Club has a water park with slides and supervised activities. Meanwhile, parents can hit the adults-only pool and bar area. At the two-story Zen Spa, 19 indoor-outdoor treatment rooms are available for a moment of calm. You might need the relaxation after taking advantage of the resort's "Olympics" beach games, dance lessons and live shows.

Rates at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos start at $520 a night, based on double occupancy. As a Category D all-inclusive resort in the World of Hyatt program, award nights cost 25,000 to 35,000 points per night, based on double occupancy. Additional guests require an additional 13,00 to 17,000 points per night, per guest.

Some all-inclusive resorts are about sitting back and relaxing. Others, like Breathless Cabo, are designed to provide moments of tranquility but are also big on the party scene. Guests can enjoy a robust lineup of entertainment options, from bubble parties to carnival-themed Champagne pool parties — all with a live DJ. When it gets too much, guests can retreat to the quieter infinity pool overlooking the marina or visit the spa for a hot stone massage to work out all the knots.

All 169 rooms have either a private balcony or terrace with marina views. Expect chic design, stocked minibars, 24-hour concierge service and room service. You can upgrade to an Xhale club suite and get access to personalized check-in service, the club lounge with premium liquors and snacks, upgraded minibars and even a pillow menu.

There are seven bars and restaurants at this Breathless, including a contemporary tapas bar, Mediterranean and Italian options, and a beachside grill. Speaking of the beach, this resort has one of the few swimmable ones in the area.

Rates at Breathless Los Cabos start at $576 a night, based on double occupancy. As a Category D all-inclusive resort in the World of Hyatt program, award nights cost 25,000 to 35,000 points per night, based on double occupancy. Additional guests require an additional 10,500 to 14,5000 points per night, per guest.

A trip to Montana's beautiful, natural landscape should be on everyone's must-experience list. At The Ranch at Rock Creek, you can have the best of it all without worrying about every little detail: The resort's all-inclusive pricing means most of what you want to experience is already paid for.

Guests can choose from 29 accommodation options, which range from glamping tents and cabins to multiroom homes and even a historic barn converted into three suites that can be booked together or separately.

For entertainment, there are summer rodeos with a barbecue, autumn dinners with barn dances and tasting menus organized by the chef.

For fun, learn the art of archery, go fly-fishing or try horseback riding. In the winter, enjoy sports like snowboarding and skiing, or simply take in the magic of fresh snow with a ride on a tube. A highly customizable experience, every reservation includes a "Ranch Ambassador" who helps plan every trip detail. All you have to do is show up and have the time of your life.

Rates at The Ranch at Rock Creek start at $2,000 a night, based on double occupancy.

Another entry from Hyatt's Ziva brand, the Puerto Vallarta property is a force to be reckoned with. Home to five restaurants and five bars, the culinary experience here is a trip across the globe with stops at an Italian trattoria, a beachside East Asian restaurant and an outpost serving Mexican cuisine. The resort has five infinity pools, including an adults-only pool, two kiddie pools and even an infinity-style hot tub. Guests can enjoy live entertainment nightly as well as activities such as nonmotorized water sports, cooking demonstrations and daily fitness classes.

In the more than 335 rooms and suites, guests can expect ocean views, white marble bathrooms, large TVs and — in select rooms and suites — hydro-massage bathtubs and rainfall-style showers. Club-level rooms and suites are available, offering in-room upgrades, private check-in areas and access to the club lounge. For a really special stay, splurge on a swim-up suite so that you can access semi-private pools directly from your room.

Rates at Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta start at $320 a night, based on double occupancy. As a Hyatt All-Inclusive Category C property, award nights are 21,000 to 29,000 points per night for double occupancy. Additional guests require an additional 10,500 to 14,500 points per person per night.

At Breathless Punta Cana, your vacation can be whatever you want it to be. If you want to relax and be lazy, spend your days lounging on the beach. If you're looking for something a little more energetic, enjoy pool parties and thumping music surrounded by new friends from all over the world at the multilevel Freestyle Pool. The property's 11 restaurants range from French and Italian to classic buffets and a steakhouse. Its eight watering holes include a sports bar, multiple swim-up bars and a moody lobby bar.

There are 750 suites available, including the 554-square-foot entry-level Allure rooms that come with a furnished private balcony or terrace and a hot tub; there are also swim-up suites with direct access to the pool. On the Xhale club level, guests gain access to a private lounge with premium liquor and afternoon hors d'oeuvres as well as an exclusive restaurant and two pools. They also receive VIP host service and upgraded in-room amenities (like a premium minibar and a pillow menu).

Rates at Breathless Punta Cana start at $342 per person per night. As a Hyatt All-Inclusive Category B property, award nights are 17,000 to 23,000 points per night for double occupancy. Additional guests require an extra 8,500 to 11,500 points per person per night.

Finding the right all-inclusive

There are a lot of factors that come into play when deciding what all-inclusive properties are the best, and the truth of the matter is that most of it comes down to personal preference and location.

For example, do you want to be at a resort with great beach access, or are you looking for an experience near Montana's beautiful mountains? Do you want a nice experience that comes at an affordable rate or are you willing to splurge for an all-inclusive resort that has fine dining?

And — one factor that's really important — do you want an adults-only experience , or are you OK with somewhere that's family-friendly ? If you're unsure, there are plenty of incredible family-friendly resorts with secluded pools and restaurants for people without children (or offer babysitting services or kids clubs for an adult date night or spa appointment).

Knowing what you want from an all-inclusive resort will make it much easier for you to find the right property for your trip.

The Best Hotel or Resort in Every State

By CNT Editors

Image may contain Resort Hotel Building Summer Palm Tree Arecaceae Tree Plant Human and Person

Whether you're into luxe dude ranches with plenty of Western-style comforts, down-home resorts where you can swing your feet over a dock, or lavishly-appointed city hotels electric with urban vibes, there's no shortage of ways to spend a night in this big, beautiful country. Here are the number one places to stay in every state—hotels and resorts, alike—as voted by you in our latest Readers' Choice Awards survey.

This gallery was originally published in 2017. It has been updated with new information.

All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The Grand Hotel Golf Resort Spa alabama

Alabama: Grand Hotel Marriott Resort Golf Club & Spa, Point Clear Arrow

Hosting guests for more than 170 years, The Grand, overlooking Mobile Bay, is a member of Historic Hotels of America. Each afternoon, the staff pays homage to the hotel’s past with a military procession and cannon firing. High tea is served daily in The Grand Hall, Southern Roots serves modern, local fare, and there's even an all-day takeaway spot, the Local Market. Rooms decor is sophisticated, and not in the slightest bit stuffy. A 20,000-square-foot spa complements a 36-hole golf course, three pools, seasonal waterslide, and ten tennis courts.

Tutka Bay Lodge

Alaska: Tutka Bay Lodge, Homer Arrow

At this lodge on the tip of the Kenai Peninsula , luxury and wilderness work in tandem. Guests spend their days fishing for halibut, kayaking in the bay, hiking on glaciers, or lazing about the property. It's also helmed by Kirsten Dixon, a celebrated locavore chef, so meals focus on ingredients that can be fished, hunted, gathered, or grown within the state (though the wine list is decidedly not local). The property is only accessible by a small boat from Homer or a seaplane from Anchorage, but it's well worth the trek.

The Hermosa Inn Paradise Valley Arizona

Arizona: The Hermosa Inn, Paradise Valley Arrow

Famed artist Lon Megargee created the Hermosa Inn in the 1930s as an escape for his friends before opening its doors to outside guests. Today, the Paradise Valley resort and its 43 hacienda-style casitas attract both vacationers on the hunt for peace and quiet, and foodies, too. Lon’s, the on-site restaurant, incorporates Southwestern techniques like smoking and wood-grilling into its New American cuisine—try the ever-popular Himalayan salt-seared Ahi Tuna, served with cilantro, pickled onion, and ceviche sauce, and pair it with one of the more than 500 wines in the cellar.

21c Museum Hotel Bentonville

Arkansas: 21c Museum Hotel, Bentonville Arrow

Artwork is clearly part of this hotel's DNA ( as it is at all 21cs )—it's displayed throughout—and while rooms follow a modern aesthetic, they retain a cozy vibe. Malin+Goetz bath amenities and in-room Nespresso make for nice touches, but you'd be remiss if you didn't explore all that the hotel has to offer: The on-site restaurant is called The Hive, and plays on its location by offering familiar flavors like deviled eggs, pimento cheese, and pasture-raised fried chicken, but with an unfamiliar and refreshing take on them. Go for the Hive Burger—pimento cheese and tomato jam make it one of a kind.

L'Horizon Resort Spa

California: L'Horizon Resort & Spa, Palm Springs Arrow

L.A.-based residential designer Steve Hermann spent two years (and millions of dollars) turning the historic William F. Cody–designed L’Horizon into a luxurious boutique hotel. He didn’t alter the footprint much—the main house and 25 bungalows were built in 1952—but he added an open-air spa and an alfresco restaurant and gut-renovated the interiors. Hermann wanted the decor to work with the mid-century architecture without creating a time warp. As such, each bungalow is a mix of modern (custom hair-on-hide rugs, industrial-chic machined brass lighting and fixtures) and vintage (furniture from Percival Lafer, Mullhauser, Knoll, and Katavolos). And while it is a fun hotel, more private club than frat party, it’s also a place for quiet indulgences: The pool is guests-only; unexpected treats are brought to your room every afternoon (could be a scoop of ice cream, could be a shot of tequila); and roaming poolside therapists offer complimentary foot and shoulder massages. Request a west-facing bungalow with an outdoor shower and watch the sun go down over the San Jacinto Mountains while shampooing.

Dunton Town House Hotel

Colorado: Dunton Town House, Telluride Arrow

Dunton Town House's location couldn't be better, on a pretty side street just down from Telluride's main drag, and steps from the gondola. Though the facade looks like a classic painted clapboard B&B, the interior whisks you away to the Tyrol, with authentic Austrian fabrics and hand-carved wooden antiques. Only ten people can stay at a time, so the Town House feels ultra-homey, with a mud room and family-style dining table, plus eclectic original art from the owners' collection.

resort travel in

Connecticut: Delamar Southport Arrow

Just 90 minutes north of New York City, the Delamar is a perfect weekend escape with on-site spa (using Biologique Recherche products) and destination restaurant, Artisan, under French chef Frederic Kieffer. Check-in begins with a glass of sherry or port, and rooms contain an attractive mix of traditional New England furnishings and colorful modern art. Added bonus: Given that the hotel is an easy, seven-minute walk from the nearest Metro North rail station, there's no need for a car to gallery-hop or to explore Southport's historic downtown.

Hotel du Pont

Delaware: Hotel du Pont, Wilmington Arrow

You'll get a heady dose of old school glamour at Wilmington's Hotel du Pont, which is housed in a 12-story Italian Renaissance building from 1913. Ascend the grand double staircase to take a long soak in your oversized bathroom, then drop in for a pre-Opera dinner at the oak-paneled Green Room.

Faena Hotel Miami Beach

Florida: Faena Hotel Miami Beach Arrow

There’s a bit of an Alice in Wonderland vibe to the Faena, and it carries through into the rooms—particularly with the smaller accents and pieces of furniture you’ll find yourself “discovering” as your stay progresses. Los Fuegos, Argentine super-chef Francis Mallmann’s open-fire asado, delivers on the food and drink front; and outside, the hotel makes the most of its 100,000 square feet of private white-sand beach. Also, if you find yourself asking, "Did I just see a golden woolly mammoth skeleton in a glass cage?" the answer is yes—you can thank artist Damien Hirst for that one.

Greyfield Inn

Georgia: Greyfield Inn, Cumberland Island Arrow

This old Southern home on a barrier island is a four-story frame structure decorated with antiques, Asian rugs, and Tiffany lamps. All-inclusive meals made with organic produce grown in the garden are outstanding, and activities include kayaking, biking, and jaunts with a fantastic resident naturalist. Cabins away from the main house are rustic but comfortable, with Audubon prints, Native American artifacts, and William Morris wallpaper.

Hotel Wailea

Hawaii: Hotel Wailea, Maui Arrow

One of the best stays in Hawaii isn't beachfront. But that's actually a positive at this luxury adults-only retreat that placed on our 2020 Readers Choice Awards . With 72 suites spread over 15 acres and 180-degree views of neighboring Lanai and Kaho‘olawe, this resort was practically designed for social distancing. Each of the one-bedroom suites have outdoor lanais, ample space, and a multitude of luxe finishes and amenities. No elevators or long hallways needed. Spa services are available in-suite, and the hotel will ferry guests down the hill to the beach in a sleek Tesla Model X. In the early evening, Birdcage Bar, located in the open-air lobby, makes for a soothing spot to slowly unravel, while a meal under the stars at The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea will have you heading off to bed in a dreamy state of relaxation.

The Coeur d'Alene Resort

Idaho: The Coeur d'Alene Resort Arrow

Ranked as having one of America's most beautiful golf courses, best known for a floating green on the 14th hole, the resort also has a private beach, a large spa with unusual waterfall massage, ten restaurants (including Beverly's with a wine cellar valued at $2 million), and two pools—one indoor, and one out. A recently completed, three year renovation has given this well-loved, 54-year-old resort a fresh face-lift, and guest rooms have wall-to-wall windows with views of lake, mountains or city. If you can, spring for the Hagadone Suite, which has its own glass-bottomed swimming pool, a waterfall bathtub, living room with fireplace and cathedral ceilings, and a private dining room.

Viceroy Hotel interior bedroom Chicago

Illinois: Viceroy Chicago Arrow

Set in the Gold Coast Historical District, the contemporary-chic Viceroy has a retro Chicago façade and mid-century furnishings within. Textures and patterns grab the eye, including an abstract headboard wall, a carpet that looks like a sand-hued topographic map, and—yes—quotes from Marcel Proust, reproduced on the lobby's 30-foot wall. You'll love the Southwestern–style throw pillows and the teal curtains, which inspire tranquility at night, while the Nespresso machine serves a valued purpose in the morning. Don’t skip their onsite restaurant, Somerset, which serves seasonal American fare and classic cocktails like the Gold Rush and State (aptly named for the hotel’s location, with bourbon, Amaro Montenegro, and honey.

JW Marriott Indianapolis Indiana

Indiana: JW Marriott Indianapolis Arrow

The five hotels comprising the Marriott in Indianapolis have more than a thousand rooms, meaning you're never going to have to worry about finding a place to stay. Located in central downtown, close to White River State Park, Military Park, and the wildly underrated Eiteljorg Museum, the JW Marriott is the perfect place to explore Indy for the first time. The presidential suite has ergonomic desks and chairs (perfect for a working vacation) and brown leather details that give a cozy feel, plus floor-to-ceiling windows with unparalleled, unobstructed views of the city.

Historic Park Inn

Iowa: Historic Park Inn, Mason City Arrow

Historic is an understatement. The inn, in the heart of Mason City, is the last remaining hotel in the world designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright. The design is pure Prairie School-style—especially the dramatic lobby (reminiscent of the now-demolished Imperial Hotel in Tokyo which it preceded by fifteen years). Opened in 1910, the hotel was converted into office space and apartments, the building was shuttered in 1972, but after a full restoration certified by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona, it reclaimed its rightful place once again as an iconic hotel in 2011. Stickley furniture in guest rooms adds to the authentic appeal of this priceless piece of history, which is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.

Kansas: The Eldridge, Lawrence Arrow

With a purportedly haunted elevator, The Eldridge—in its multiple rebuilds and reincarnations—played an important role as a waystation for anti-slavery immigrants to the Kansas Territory in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Rooms in this member of Historic Hotels of America are fresh and modern (eight suites, with small kitchens, are located a block away in the Extended Eldridge). The Jayhawker restaurant has recently been redone with a hearty, Midwestern menu of chicken fried steak, rib eye, pot roast, and bone-in pork chops. The hotel is also home to Kaw Valley Massage.

Kentucky: 21c Museum Hotel, Lexington Arrow

There are a million different directions that your eyes can wander to in the 21c Museum Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky, thanks to the incredibly ornate lobby, fabulous front desk, and the healthy amount of contemporary art peppered throughout the hotel. Lockbox, the hotel's restaurant, doesn't disappoint: Order like a local, and enjoy a bourbon before you dive into their country ham hushpuppies or seed-crusted catfish. The vibe of the place permits a LBD or dinner jacket, but doesn't frown on casual, either. Still, the crowd here is posh, and you better believe they're Instagramming every nook and cranny of the place.

Pontchartrain Hotel New Orleans

Louisiana: Pontchartrain Hotel, New Orleans Arrow

Attention to design details and value for money make The Pontchartrain Hotel a must-stay for anyone unafraid to bed down outside of the French Quarter (it's in the Lower Garden District). There is a timeless elegance to the exterior—a style that hasn’t changed since the 1940s—which is carried through to the lobby, with its crimson and emerald overtones, defiantly analogue elevators, and gilded mirrors with gold leaf accents. For unparalleled city views, head to the rooftop bar, Hot Tin , which is as busy with locals as guests (always a good sign).

Hidden Pond Kennebunkport Maine

Maine: Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport Arrow

Drive down the subtly marked dirt road into the resort, and the first thing you come upon is a garden on your right and a small pond on your left. Slowly, you realize that tucked between them and the countless birch trees are cottages and treehouse suites. Hidden Pond has been expanding over the decade-plus since it opened, adding private bungalows and cottages and one of the standout restaurants in the entire state in Earth. Personal, quiet, and soothing, but with plenty of activities for all ages, this is one of those places people come back to again and again.

Image may contain Building Water Resort Hotel Waterfront Pool and Swimming Pool

Maryland: Sagamore Pendry Baltimore Arrow

Years in the making, this is the first East Coast hotel for Pendry, the off-shoot brand from Montage. The hotel occupies the Recreation Pier, a landmark building in Fell’s Point, that was left empty for nearly two decades before reopening as the Pendry, thanks in part to a big investment from Under Armour’s Kevin Plank. While the “Rec Pier” serves as the frontispiece of the property—and houses the Andrew Carmellini Rec Pier Chop House restaurant and a small whiskey bar called The Cannon Room—the guest rooms are in the new-build addition on the old footprint of the pier, which gives the place a bolted-together feel but also supremely comfortable guest rooms that aren’t jig-sawed into a historic building. The Pendry is probably one of the best places to stay in Baltimore right now, and if you’re coming for nightlife and dining, this is the perfect place to be.

XV Beacon Boston

Massachusetts: XV Beacon, Boston Arrow

Located in Beacon Hill just steps from the Massachusetts State House and the bustling financial district, XV Beacon (say “Fifteen Beacon” if you’re talking about it) is a transportive paradise of serenity and relaxation. The vibe is sexy—lots of dark-stained woods, crimson accents, and antique furniture—but the ethos is entirely Boston. With only seven guest rooms per floor, XV Beacon has a distinctly residential feel, and rooms are spacious but still intimate. The fact that each one comes with a personal fireplace speaks to the level of luxury and coziness here. Every detail feels special, from the Frette linens and the one-of-a-kind commissioned artworks to the cashmere throws and the pillow menu. And there’s no better way to unwind after a day of meetings or hiking the Freedom Trail than with a soak in the white-marble tub, a feature of some rooms. Looking for food and drink? Mooo.... (three O’s, four periods) on the first floor takes the best parts of steakhouses (grass-fed beef, a killer dessert list, a solid brunch) and distills them into something that works for a boutique hotel of this scale. Not too keen on getting dressed up for dinner? Don't worry; the entire menu can be delivered directly to your door. And with only 63 rooms, the hotel offers a degree of attention and service you generally don’t find at Boston’s larger hotels. Staff is used to making check-in and check-out seamless and offering personal touches throughout the stay. Every detail of the experience feels tailor-made to this hotel, right down to the custom fragrance that welcomes you the moment you step into the lobby. From $495. —Todd Plummer

Grand Hotel Mackinac Island

Michigan: Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island Arrow

For more than a century, Grand Hotel has stood as a landmark accommodation on Michigan’s Mackinac Island—some call it America's Summer Place, and they have good reason to. This is good, old-fashioned living: cars are banned, and visitors stroll, bike, or hail a horse drawn carriage for transport around the island, from the sprawling campus's golf course, swimming pools, tennis courts, gardens, and more. Its front porch, at 660 feet, is the longest in the world, and can be seen as you approach the island by ferry—even if all of the 388 rooms are occupied, there's space for everyone to take in the waterfront views.

Hewing Hotel Minneapolis Minnesota

Minnesota: Hewing Hotel, Minneapolis Arrow

Opened in late 2016, the Hewing occupies the historic Jackson Building, built in 1897 as a warehouse for timber traveling the Mississippi River and showroom for farm equipment—traces of the past can still be seen in what is otherwise a thoroughly contemporary, and endearingly Minnesotan hotel. Cleverly curated in-room amenities include cozy Faribault Woolen Mills throws, a minibar stocked with local products, and a terrific bar with full-bottle tipples from Far North Spirits and Tattersall Distilling. Tullibee restaurant is a big draw for visitors and locals, serving tasty Nordic-inspired food and sourcing from its own on-site butcher for meat to roast over its wood-fired grill. Don't miss the sixth floor's rooftop bar and cocktail lounge—and for guests, the use of a small pool in summer that turns in to a hot tub in winter (there's also a 20-person cedar-wood sauna).

This image may contain Hotel Building Resort and Office Building

Mississippi: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi Arrow

Look twice: You might confuse the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi's pool scene with that of its Las Vegas counterparts. Book a fresh, fun room with a Gulf view, then hit the slots for an hour or two. Built on storm-resistant cement pilings rather than a floating barge (as it originally was, before being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005), the resort contains B.B. King's original guitar Lucille, and Elvis Presley's Army uniform—plus a Katrina memorial collage of artifacts found after the storm.

The Fontaine Kansas City Missouri

Missouri: The Fontaine, Kansas City Arrow

Formerly Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza, The Fontaine changed ownership—and name—in 2017. An eclectic mix of Venetian glass chandeliers, tile mosaics, Carrera marble floors and bathrooms, and modernized Renaissance art, sets this hotel apart from standard Midwestern fare. Rooftop restaurant, Parker, is known for its brick chicken and sweeping views of treetops and a seasonal outdoor pool. Charmingly pet-friendly, the hotel has a private Serenity Garden and location close to public parks and the city's famed Fountain of Neptune.

Triple Creek Ranch

Montana: Triple Creek Ranch, Darby Arrow

Just 75 miles south of Missoula, Triple Creek nevertheless manages to feel like it’s in its own world. With 25 log cabins looking out onto the Bitterroot Mountains, all-inclusive Triple Creek pairs upscale rusticity with isolation—we're talking exposed log walls, slate bathrooms, and private hot tubs. Fill your days with horseback riding, hiking or snowshoeing, a fly-casting clinic, archery, or tennis, or simply relax by the pool.

Hotel Deco XV

Nebraska: Hotel Deco, Omaha Arrow

Designed in line with River City's other Art Deco gems—Union Station and the Joslyn Art Museum— the circa 1930, 14-story Deco was converted from offices to a hotel in 1989. Rooms are modern, with a sophisticated white and grey palette. Monarch Prime & Bar is a proper steakhouse—try the wagyu sirloin. Don't miss the hidden speakeasy, The Wicked Rabbit, inside the Looking Glass Cigars and Spirits shop next to the hotel (you'll need to check its Facebook page for a password to imbibe Prohibition-era cocktails).

Nevada: The Palazzo, Las Vegas Arrow

The Palazzo is the extravagant younger sibling of  The Venetian  (both are part of The Venetian Resort) and was planned around the same kind of Renaissance Italian aesthetic. Each of the hotels has its own rotunda entrance; on the Palazzo side, rather than being all gold, there's an amazing crystal sculpture of women that's actually a two-level fountain. It's both modern and reminiscent of classical sculpture. It has the largest standard rooms on the Strip—700-square-foot bilevel suites with L-shaped sofas—and a slightly quieter atmosphere than Venetian’s family-forward vibe. Venetian and Palazzo have always had so many dining options, but in recent years, they've really turbo-charged the hip options, like Rosina, an intimate, Art Deco lounge right at the base of the guest room elevators in Palazzo. And the Prestige upgrade is well worth the money for the largest standard rooms on the Strip, and at less money than a hotel room in most other cities.

Wentworth by the Sea New Castle New Hampshire

New Hampshire: Wentworth by the Sea, New Castle Arrow

Old-world luxury abounds at Wentworth by the Sea, a grand, nineteenth-century estate on the Atlantic. The coastal retreat has a red mansard roof and three towers, and looks out on granite outcroppings. If you're really interested in feeling like you've gone back in time, you're in luck: Interiors brandished with such details as traditional damasks, intricate woodwork, brass accents, and pinstriped wallpaper will make you feel like you've wound back the clock. The dining room at Latitudes, through which waiters navigate with platters of Prince Edward Island mussels and lobster rolls, overlooks the marina.

The Reeds at Shelter Haven

New Jersey: The Reeds at Shelter Haven, Stone Harbor Arrow

Only three blocks from 96th Street Beach in Stone Harbor and 16 miles from Cape May, The Reeds is a refreshing change from the Jersey Shore's glut of motels. Rooms are bright and cheerful—especially the Corner Kings with oversized bay windows. Beach Service, via electric car shuttle with beach chairs, towels, tags, and umbrella, is available mid-May to October, as well as a rooftop plunge pool and two hot tubs. Daily outdoor yoga sessions, during the summer, is complimentary. There's all-day upscale dining at Sax, and the seasonally-open Water Star Grille and Buckets Margarita Bar & Cantina taqueria. The Salt Spa will debut on-site this year with treatments and a Turkish bath.

Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi Santa Fe New Mexico

New Mexico: Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi, Santa Fe Arrow

Blessed before its opening by a Pueblo medicine man, a Franciscan priest, and a local artist to represent the diverse cultures of the area, this downtown adobe hotel has a tangible warmth to it. A quarter block from the Plaza and Palace of the Governors, the location can’t be beat. Designed with sandstone and earth tones, the walls showcase works by contemporary Native American artists including Dan Namingha and Doug Coffin, while touches like gnarled wrought iron lamps appear throughout. Rooms have gaslit kiva fireplaces, hand-carved four-poster beds, and ceilings with pine vigas. Anasazi Restaurant dishes up Southwestern fare such as grilled elk tenderloin and achiote chile–roasted duck breast, focusing on seasonal ingredients, fish, and local produce.

The Chatwal New York

New York: The Chatwal, A Luxury Collection Hotel, New York City Arrow

A top-to-bottom refit of the Lambs Club, the historic thespian hangout in the heart of Midtown’s Theater District, by designer Thierry Despont has turned this actors’ den into a sleek 76-room hotel with Art Deco lines and ocean liner–inspired fittings that hark back to a bygone era of travel. (The wonderfully accommodating service throughout—is there anything the house butler can’t do?—is another throwback we love.) A small but richly furnished lobby gives way to the Lambs Club restaurant, an 80-seater from chef Michael White where the focal point would be the original stone fireplace if it weren’t for the storylines unfolding at the other tables. Rooms are fitted with gorgeous steamer trunk–like wardrobes and desk-vanity combos in chocolate leather, while bathrooms come with wall-to-wall mirrors and rain showers stocked with custom Asprey amenities. Guests can find a break at the cozy Lambs Club Bar, hidden away above the lobby, and at the underground spa, with a clever “endless” lap pool and small gym—probably the only place on the property where you can let them see you sweat.

North Carolina: Sanderling Resort, Duck Arrow

Expect Outer Banks architecture like cedar-shake siding at this beachfront retreat, where the location alone makes it an ideal getaway. Accommodations, which were recently refreshed, are airy and chic—think sand-colored linen headboards, warm wood floors, and the occasional in-suite fireplace—and are spread throughout three inns. Check out Kimball’s Kitchen, where locally sourced meat and seafood are as much of a draw as the views of the sound, as well as The Beach House Lobby Bar and Sandbar, with fresh-baked pastries on hand at the former, and poolside drinks at the latter.

North Dakota: Rough Riders Hotel, Medora Arrow

If you need a little wild, wild west with your vacation, opt for North Dakota's Rough Riders Hotel , housed in a 19th-century building that'll have you wondering where the nearest saloon is. Speaking of which, check out the Cowboy Hall of Fame, just one block over from the hotel.

21c Museum Hotel Cincinnati

Ohio: 21c Museum Hotel, Cincinnati Arrow

We've long been fans of the 21c Museum Hotels—chic properties that double as contemporary art museums. And the Cincinnati outpost, which opened its doors in late 2012, is one of the best the brand has to offer. The property sits in the 100-year-old former Metropole Hotel in downtown Cincinnati, and the 21c architects and designers made sure to integrate many of the building's original features, including the lobby's mosaic tile floors, the sweeping staircase leading to the ballroom, and gorgeous terra cotta that lines the exterior. The 156-room hotel boasts a rooftop bar and spa, along with the Metropole restaurant, led by executive chef Michael Paley—plus 8,000 square feet of exhibition and event space (artwork rotates regularly). Rooms are minimal and sleek, but have pops of artwork on the walls, lest you forget where you are for a moment.

21c Museum Hotel Oklahoma City

Oklahoma: 21c Museum Hotel, Oklahoma City Arrow

Opened in June 2016, the hotel—originally a Ford Model T assembly plant designed in 1916 by famed architect Albert Kahn—continues 21c group's popular expansion across the country. Sensitively restored original details include terrazzo floors, entry canopy and marquee, and decorative brick and terra cotta flourishes. Contemporary art fills both common spaces and guest rooms (which come with a Nespresso coffee machine and MALIN+GOETZ bath amenities). New American cuisine can be found at the indoor/outdoor Mary Eddy's Kitchen x Lounge.

Dossier

Oregon: Dossier, Portland Arrow

Located in the heart of downtown, Dossier is the ideal basecamp from which to explore everything that Portland has to offer. The lobby has a distinct Mid-century-meets-Deco vibe that perfectly encapsulates the city's refined hipster aesthetic. The service is distinct Oregonian—efficient and quick without sacrificing warmth. Each room contains an honor bar with fantastically local Portland snacks and spirits, as well as LATHER bath amenities and packets of Knot Springs's signature bath scrubs. You might find yourself trying to figure out how to steal the Simmons Beautyrest Black Napa mattresses, or the Italian linen sheets, or the plush bathrobes. The front desk has a couple of bikes to rent out so you can explore this impossibly bike-able city on two wheels. And every day, the hotel invites guests to the lobby for a craft beer and kombucha happy hour courtesy of Ferment Brewing Company.

The Lodge at Woodloch

Pennsylvania: The Lodge at Woodloch, Hawley Arrow

Ninety miles from New York City , this lodge in northeast Pennsylvania may just be the perfect weekend getaway for stressed-out city dwellers who need an escape. The quiet and serene resort has more than 500 wooded acres and a private lake, and spaces that force you to exhale: Guests enter under a porte-cochère into the plant-filled Garden Hall, which has a 14-foot glass cupola and a balcony looking onto the lake. And, all rooms have private verandas and oversize marble bathrooms. There are plenty of ways to keep busy, too. Excursions include fly-fishing and trail biking trips, or you can stay on-site for a soothing river stone massage at the spa.

Rhode Island: Ocean House, Watch Hill Arrow

It's easy to turn back time at the Ocean House. Propped up on a magnificent bluff overlooking Little Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island’s historic Watch Hill neighborhood, the rambling, sunshine yellow Victorian structure recalls the days of the Grand Tour, when men of means would gallivant around the world, and the wealthy were lured from the city to the sea come summer. Though the porticoed property had 159 rooms when it opened in 1868, it ultimately fell into disrepair and was shuttered in 2003. But a $146 million facelift in 2010 left it shiny and new—and a lot roomier. It now has 49 rooms and 18 signature suites, all of which are breezy, bright, and pinstriped, capturing the beach feel but still managing to feel luxurious.

The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort Marina

South Carolina: The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina, Mt. Pleasant Arrow

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more elegant and well-equipped place to stay by the water than at the 92-room Beach Club , which opened in October 2016. Directly across the harbor from downtown Charleston on Patriots Point in historic Mount Pleasant, the resort is just a free, fifteen-minute trolley shuttle and seasonal water taxi ride from this Southern foodie haven. Modern meals are served in the Fish House, occupying the same building as the creatively-curated Marina Store, which sells everything from scented soaps to tomes on local history.

South Dakota: Hotel Alex Johnson, Rapid City Arrow

Right in the heart of downtown Rapid City, the circa-1927 Hotel Alex Johnson will take you as close to the action as you can get. When you're not off exploring Mount Rushmore, a 25-minute drive away, you can enjoy the old-school ambiance of the space, which is outfitted with Native American art and artwork. In the lobby, make sure to look out for the ‘four sacred directions’ symbols, a tribute to the area’s Native American history and culture.

River Inn of Harbor Town

Tennessee: River Inn of Harbor Town, Memphis Arrow

This boutique hotel in Memphis’s Harbor Town is a short drive from Graceland, Beale Street, and other local attractions. Most rooms have beautiful views of the Mississippi River and there’s a terrace where visitors can watch the sunset and see the downtown Memphis skyline. The Inn offers a European and Southern feel with wood armoires and four-post beds in the bedrooms, and live music playing in the lobby.

Texas: Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt, Austin Arrow

Inspired by singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, a country music legend, this hotel fits right into the Live Music Capital of the World. Musical touches are everywhere: chandeliers made from French horns; a lobby bar record player that pipes tunes into the elevators; artwork in the shape of flying birds made out of vinyl. Every room has an impressive view of either the city or Lady Bird Lake , and is done in a stylish palette of gray and dark blue. But while the furniture is run-of-the-mill Restoration Hardware, the artwork is bespoke: think framed replicas of vintage concert posters and a historic map of Austin as wallpaper. And you'll know you're in Austin with touches like bottles of Topo Chico in the rooms along with a boot jack for getting off the cowboy boots you bought at Allens .

Stein Eriksen Lodge

Utah: Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley Arrow

This mid-mountain Norwegian-style lodge is the "ultimate ski hotel with old-world charm," thanks to custom millwork, flower paintings from the lowland areas of eastern Norway, and leather, copper, and stone elements. Each room in the lodge is uniquely styled, but all have dark-wood furnishings, a Nordic color scheme, and bathrooms with Molton Brown toiletries. Suites come with large stone fireplaces. Glitretind serves up regional American cuisine and unique specialties (try the Norwegian potato pancakes) with views of the Wasatch Mountains. If you're looking for a little relaxation, the 23,000-square-foot spa has 16 treatment rooms.

Vermont: Windham Hill Inn, West Townshend Arrow

For anyone looking for a non-fussy and intimate stay in Vermont—where perhaps Airbnb lacks the service you're after, but you still want to maintain a house-of-your-own feel—this is your spot: Here, the foliage is perfectly overgrown, and you feel as if you're visiting a friend's home rather than a hotel. Once you've entered, you're met with ultra-cozy fireplaces and overstuffed chairs. This is the kind of place you want to lock yourself up in during your stay, and luckily, you're not far from great food—the on-site restaurant is exceptional.

Primland

Virginia: Primland, Meadows of Dan Arrow

It’s probably been a while since most city slickers have seen the stars (or the sun, for that matter), but Primland Resort is on the job. At this eco-conscious getaway, the altitude and sparsely populated mountain setting presents a cure-all for this ailment, in the form of stargazing. You can wish on whichever one you want—when you view the night sky from the resort’s Observatory Dome, expect to see millions. But it’s not just a place to study the heavenly bodies: it has a heavenly spa, too, where guests can luxuriate in the mosaic-tiled pool, then head to a meditation class or a soothing massage for that stubborn ache or pain. Though the resort has an assortment of rustic-refined suites, cottages, and houses, we suggest booking the Pinnacles Suite, a two-story abode with floor-to-ceiling windows, 400-thread count Frette sheets, and most importantly, a killer view of aforementioned galaxies.

Salish Lodge Spa

Washington: Salish Lodge & Spa, Snoqualmie Arrow

Built in 1916 as a rest stop for travelers, this Cascade Mountains lodge is set above 268-foot-high Snoqualmie Falls. The setting for the TV series Twin Peaks , the mountain lodge offers rooms in blues, emeralds, and turquoises (to mirror the colors of the sky, the Snoqualmie River, and Puget Sound) with custom-built furniture. A honeybee apiary on the hillside by the lodge produces honey for the spa and the Dining Room, where local artisanal cheeses are also served.

The Greenbrier

West Virginia: The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs Arrow

Set on 11,000 acres in the Allegheny Mountains, this resort was founded in 1778 as a cottage community but today offers falconry, kayaking, golf, and a casino. Gorgeous eye-candy rooms are extremely well appointed with antiques, floral fabrics, and black-and-white marble floors. Enjoy seafood, pasta, and Neapolitan pizzas at The Forum, or catch a mountain hot-stone massage at the spa, which uses minerals derived from the nearby sulfur springs.

The Pfister Hotel Milwaukee Wisconsin

Wisconsin: The Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee Arrow

This icon of a hotel, built in 1893 near the city's historic Third Ward, is home to the largest collection of Victorian Artwork of any hotel in the world. Rooms are conservatively classic, but common spaces don't hold back with requisite lobby lounge piano, over-the-top holiday decorations, a grand staircase, and marble fireplace. Don't miss Lake Michigan views from Blu, a sophisticated martini and wine bar on the hotel's twenty-third floor, or the hotel's indoor pool.

Wyoming: The Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek Ranch, Saratoga Arrow

Consistently rated one of the best resorts in the U.S. by our readers and set on 30,000 acres amid the Sierra Madres, the spread executes the luxury dude ranch concept with skill and style: think spotted cowhide chairs in the lounge, fur throws at the edge of knotty wooden king-sized beds, and yurts decked out with antler chandeliers and leather couches. For an upscale group getaway, book the nine cabins that make up the Magee Homestead—it comes with its own concierge service.

Five Arizona hotels were just named among the best in the world for 2024.

Travel + Leisure unveiled its 2024 T+L 500 list of the world's best hotels, compiled based on ratings from its readers, in its May issue. The list includes five Arizona hotels, including four that made T+L's 2023 best hotels in Arizona ranking .

Readers evaluate based on their levels of quality, luxury, service and amenities. Here's a look at which Arizona hotels made the Travel + Leisure 2024 best hotels list.

For more hotels recognized as being among the best of metro Phoenix, read about the honorees in  U.S. News & World Report's 2024 ranking ,  Forbes' 2024 Star Awards , and  Esquire's best new hotels in the world .

Five Arizona hotels selected by Travel + Leisure

Readers of Travel + Leisure, America's largest travel media brand, selected five Arizona hotels on its 2024 ranking of the world's best hotels:

  • Castle Hot Springs, Morristown.
  • The Hermosa Inn, Paradise Valley.
  • Mountain Shadows Resort, Paradise Valley.
  • Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, A Gurney's Resort & Spa, Paradise Valley.
  • Tanque Verde Ranch, Tucson.

“We’re honored to be recognized on the highly coveted T+L 500 List,” said Andrew Chippindall, general manager of Mountain Shadows Resort. “It’s a true testament to our team’s unwavering commitment to providing exceptional experiences for our treasured guests.”

How Travel + Leisure World's Best hotels 2024 were chosen

The T+L 500 list is derived from T+L's annual World's Best Awards, selected based on reader reviews and feedback. Readers were surveyed about their travel experiences around the world, including hotels, cities, islands, airlines, cruise ships and other experiences.

Readers rated hotels based on their rooms and facilities, location, service, food and overall value. They scored each category on a scale from "excellent" to "poor."

The hotels recognized this year are favorites among the publication's readers, who named Castle Hot Springs the best Arizona hotel of 2021 and 2022 and the Hermosa Inn the state's best of 2023. All except for Tanque Verde Ranch were included on last year's list of the 10 best hotels in Arizona.

Vacation Rentals on Business Trips? Who Gets the Best Airline Seat?

Elizabeth Casolo , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 12:18 PM EDT

Business travel still has a long way to go in terms of sustainability and accommodating employee needs. Mastercard’s latest survey shows how no company is the same.

Elizabeth Casolo

A new study from Mastercard highlights how decision makers and travelers perceive sustainability, vacation rentals, and other topics in corporate travel.

Survey feedback came from 265 corporate travel decision makers and 151 business travelers around the world. Other issues in the paper include reformed travel and expenses (T&E) policies and airplane class seating.

As corporate travel continues to evolve in the years since the pandemic, here’s what you need to know:

Push for sustainability in business travel

Previous research has shown that corporate travel has made few strides toward prioritizing sustainability. Some companies are taking steps, though, with rail travel and other initiatives.

Companies and travel decision makers

  • 61% urge business travelers to consider sustainable options while booking
  • A quarter have a “sustainability tax” they internally charge to employees or departments based on booking options
  • 42% encourage or mandate rail travel globally as an alternative to air travel, hoping to limit carbon emissions or reduce cost
  • 58% encourage or mandate rail travel in specific countries

Business travelers

  • 53% say their company encourages or mandates rail travel globally
  • 78% say their company encourages or mandates rail travel regionally

Acceptance of vacation rentals

While sometimes cheaper, some companies avoid vacation rentals due to duty of care, which could include employee safety concerns. This isn’t stopping some companies and employees from exploring this option, though.

  • 53% permit booking vacation rentals
  • 74% of business travelers say their companies allow booking vacation rentals for work trips, indicating some misalignment between traveler and decision maker expectations

Integrated and honed T&E policies and procedures

There is a growing market for tools and products that streamline T&E. Employees are vocal about their needs.

  • Over 42% believe their companies’ T&E policies need improvement
  • 54% want payment and expense integration
  • 66% say easy-to-find policies can help them follow T&E guidance

Who gets the ‘better’ airplane seat

Companies have varying policies about who gets the “good” seat, if anyone.

  • 27% don’t allow first class for anyone, but 40% allow first class for senior executives
  • 15% bar basic economy for anyone
  • 42% say their companies allow employees to upgrade with points
  • 26% to 36% say their companies have policies based on flight length that could grant someone a better seat

11 top affordable all-inclusive resorts for 2024.

A stress-free getaway awaits at these affordable all-in-one properties.

Top Affordable All-Inclusive Resorts

Chairs on a guest room patio at Iberostar Selection Cancún.

All-inclusive resorts promise a simplified vacation: One upfront fee covers food, drinks and select activities, so you can relax with a cocktail in hand instead of worrying about your spending. However, not every all-inclusive accommodation option offers the same budget-conscious bang for your buck; some end up costing much more than you may be hoping to pay thanks to extra fees for amenities like kids clubs or meals at specialty restaurants.

These U.S. News picks for affordable resorts are properties where two guests can stay in one room for around $250 per night or less. These prices may not be available year-round: You may need to settle for off-peak travel periods or reserve well in advance for peak seasons (usually December to April for warm destinations). Round-trip flights are not factored into these prices, but some resorts may offer packages that include air travel.

Whether you're dreaming of a family-friendly beach trip or an adults-only escape, these reasonably priced all-inclusive resorts across the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America ensure a memorable travel experience that won't break the bank.

Catalonia Royal La Romana: Bayahibe, Dominican Republic

Starting rate: From $240 per night

Package deals: Travelers may save some extra cash by opting for a package that provides discounts at spa, golf courses and more.

Catalonia Royal La Romana is an adults-only , all-inclusive property in the small resort town of Bayahibe, which sits about 45 miles southwest of Punta Cana . With fewer than 120 guest rooms and suites, this resort differs from the larger complexes found across the Dominican Republic. In fact, some vacationers have said it has the feel of a boutique hotel. Choose between rooms facing the garden or ocean (typically more expensive), all of which are fitted with balconies.

Rates include free diving lessons in the pool and snorkel equipment rentals, plus other activities like kayaking, tennis and dance classes. Otherwise, spend your days lounging by your choice of five pools (including one indoor option), two hot tubs and a private beach. Dining venues include the upscale Veranda restaurant, the casual Cocal eatery and an assortment of bars. Recent guests describe El Cozumeleño as a great place to relax, with particularly friendly staff. Per-night costs can dip as low as $130 per room and typically don't rise above $200 per night.

Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta: Mexico

For an affordable option within reach of Puerto Vallarta , consider Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta, located just under 10 miles northwest of the center of the popular resort city. The hotel's all-inclusive plan encompasses unlimited food and beverages, gratuities, nonmotorized water sports, Wi-Fi access and more.

You'll enjoy access to two lagoon-style pools with slides, hot tubs and waterfalls – plus another lap pool for workouts and a kids area. Meanwhile, palapas and chairs are available at the beach, and guests will have a long list of sporty activities to choose from, including bocce and kayaking.

Restaurant options include Mexican fare, Italian dishes and sushi, plus the Copan Sunset Sky Bar for drinks with a view. Recent visitors say that Paradise Village is a good bet for family vacations, thanks to the plentiful activities at the property.

Package deals: Hotel Riu Playa Blanca lists a variety of "best offers" on its website for select dates throughout the year.

If you'd like to look beyond classic all-inclusive destinations like the Dominican Republic or Mexico, consider Hotel Riu Playa Blanca, located about 80 miles southwest of Panama City, Panama. Accommodations all come with free Wi-Fi access, a minibar, and a balcony or terrace.

Activities include hits like water polo and beach volleyball, as well as some more unique options like a coffee class and palm weaving.

The property offers four main restaurants and seven bars, including poolside options. Given Costa Rica's prominence as an ecotourism destination, you may also want to visit the pristine rainforests or tropical islands in the area (however, such excursions aren't included in the hotel rates). Previous guests love the proximity to nature and the option to go on wildlife tours, though some travelers feel the resort caters more to locals.

Note: The property will be renovating its 408 guest rooms in different stages between 2023 and 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one agency or website that offers the best deals for every all-inclusive resort. Instead, a solid approach is to use a website like Kayak or Expedia to search for resorts that have cheaper pricing available at the time you want to travel. Then, once you have the names of a few affordable options, you can shop around different agencies or websites to see which one offers the cheapest deal.

If you're on the hunt for an all-inclusive deal, it's important to think about your timing – both in terms of when you're booking and when you want to travel. Better deals tend to involve traveling when there's less demand. According to Laura Sangster, founder of luxury travel agency Caribbean Journey , there's typically less demand for all-inclusive properties in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America during September and October, which are typically part of hurricane season .

"This is when hotels, including all-inclusive resorts, experience the lowest occupancy and thus offer the best deals in an effort to fill rooms. Historically, these have been very active hurricane months. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, so rates within this period are always less than December to May."

While Sangster notes that it's possible to find last-minute resort deals for travel during these more popular months, she doesn't recommend holding out for such bargains.

"While you might benefit from a decreased hotel rate, airfares currently price the other way and will only be more expensive closer to travel," she says. "It's also important to plan ahead to ensure you are able to secure the room category you want."

Sangster advises travelers to book well in advance to get better prices, particularly if you're hoping to travel during peak season. "We saw very few deals during the 2021 and 2022 peak seasons. All-inclusive resorts seemed to follow a trend of increasing as the weeks and months ticked by," she says. "Our clients who didn't book the initial proposal we prepared often faced higher rates when they came back to book weeks or months later."

Read: The Trick to Finding Cheap Flights

Unfortunately, there isn't one easy answer to this question. It's generally possible to find cruise fares at a cheaper price than all-inclusive vacations, but cruises are known for having more hidden costs that can rack up during your trip. For example, not all cruise fares include alcoholic drinks; you may need to purchase a daily beverage package , which can quickly add to the bill. You may also have to pay more to access some restaurants on board or for excursions when the ship docks.

In contrast, all-inclusive resort rates usually include drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and meals at all restaurants on the property. It's still possible to incur additional charges for services like spa treatments or some activities like a scuba diving trip, but such fees tend to be for much more obvious extras.

The best way to know whether a cruise or all-inclusive resort is right for you is to do your research before booking. Look at what a cruise fare does and doesn't include, and try to figure out how much you'll need to pay in extra fees to have the vacation you want. You can also check out our breakdown of how much a cruise costs and even browse all-inclusive cruise options to see if they're right for you.

You can book either an “all-inclusive” or “soft all-inclusive” experience — the latter doesn’t include alcoholic drinks — but both come with unparalleled access to the bright blue waters and white-sand beaches.

To keep you busy, there’s the beach, of course, plus a diving school, canoeing, windsurfing, and excursions to neighboring islands and villages.

Falkensteiner Club Funimation Borik

Walter Luttenberger /Falkensteiner Hotels & Resorts

The activity program was created specifically with families in mind.

Couples and honeymooners might prefer a resort that's less focused on kids.

Falkensteiner Club Funimation Borik has two seasons: all-inclusive (peak season) and half-board. If you come for the all-inclusive part of the year — April/May through November — expect extended culinary services and lots of adventure-filled programming. Outdoor water games, treasure hunts, and more will keep the whole gang entertained. No matter when you visit, one thing’s sure: There’s always something to do and eat at the Croatian resort. The team also considers those with specific dietary restrictions and seamlessly caters to their requirements.

  • What’s included with the stay: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets, beverages (soft drinks, beer, local wine), all-inclusive bar during specific hours, snack bar, nightly entertainment, use of the spa, VAT
  • Standout amenities: Heated indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, fitness center, playground, movie theater

Nautilux Rethymno

The full-board package covers all meals and a selection of alcoholic drinks.

Loud music and a party atmosphere is the norm at night.

If you’ve heard of Rethymno, it may be because the town is home to one of the best-preserved castles in Crete, Fortezza Castle. Old Town (where you’ll find the 17th-century structure) is only 2.5 miles from Nautilux Rethymno — so you can experience the Venetian Renaissance and Ottoman architecture and the relaxing resort atmosphere. When you’re on the property, expect to lounge by the pool, swim in the Sea of Crete, and dance the night away at the beach club. Activities like boat rentals, city tours, and helicopter sightseeing can be arranged for additional costs.

  • What’s included with the stay: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages (soft drinks, mineral water, coffee, hot chocolate), daily allowance of alcoholic drinks, Wi-Fi
  • Standout amenities: Three pools (two outdoor, one indoor), beach club, fitness center, spa with a salt sauna and steam bath, beach access
  • Location: Crete, Greece

The hotel has three pools, two hot tubs, a tennis court, and a spa with top-tier amenities like a sauna, steam bath, and fitness center — and each guest room comes with a romantic balcony. Elix stands out among the world's all-inclusive hotels because of its location on a cliff above a white-sand beach and turquoise waters. The 146-room property is designed to ensure your experience is focused around the glittering Ionian Sea. From the moment you awake, until the sun sets over the water, you’ll be in the presence of this natural beauty — especially if you choose to spend your days swimming, kayaking, or sailing.

Know Before You Go

Research peak and low seasons, and be flexible with your dates..

Like most hotels, all-inclusive resorts offer nightly rates that fluctuate seasonally. Peak season varies by destination, but for the most part, the winter holidays and spring break tend to be the most expensive times of the year. To save even more money, consider traveling during shoulder season. Play around with dates to figure out if arriving and departing one or two nights earlier (or later) affects the cost.

Have a thorough understanding of what is included in the nightly rate.

“All-inclusive” doesn’t always mean every meal, drink, and activity is included in your package. Common exclusions include premium alcohol, spa treatments, and off-site excursions. Before you book, thoroughly research what the nightly rate covers — and don’t forget to read the hotel’s terms and conditions. Once you've arrived, feel empowered to ask the on-site team questions. Every resort is different, and many offer tiered packages that outline included services and amenities.

Keep in mind seasonal weather conditions.

A large number of the all-inclusive resorts on this list are located in areas that experience hurricane season. Before you confirm your trip, think about getting travel insurance, and always read the hotel’s fine print. Some all-inclusive properties have strict cancellation policies, and you want to avoid any situation where the weather causes you to lose your trip and travel funds.

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

resort travel in

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.

Where to go

Our favorite destinations: These 12 destinations are at the top of our wish list for where to go this year, without crowds. In 2023, we explored an Alaskan bear paradise, Brooklyn’s famous pizzerias and a hidden gem in Italy, among other highlights .

Tales from the road: Dolly Parton has opened a new resort at her theme park complex in Tennessee, while “Fixer Upper” stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have a new hotel in Waco . Road-trippers may be just as excited to see the cartoon beaver at Buc-ee’s , and bargain-hunters should consider a stop at the Unclaimed Baggage store in Scottsboro, Ala.
