Rishikesh

Lakshman Jhula happens to be one of the famous hanging bridges across the holy river Ganga. The jhula is a link in between two important villages in Rishikesh. It connects the Tapovan village in Tehri Garhwal and Jonk village in Pauri Garhwal. The bridge is made up of iron and it is almost 450 feet long, which is suspended at an elevation of almost 70 feet above the river. Lakshman Jhula has been one of the centres for tourist attraction since its inception for its amazing association of the Hindu Mythology. As per the popular Hindu mythology, Ramayan, it is believed that Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman had crossed the Ganga river at the same place, where the bridge has been built. The bridge was opened for public in the year 1929. In recent times, in order to boost the tourist footfall, many other developments have been carried out around the famous Lakshman Jhula. Tourists now love to spend a considerable amount of time in these places in the course of their Rishikesh Trip. You can not only visit the Lakshman Jhula, but you can also spend time in some of the other nearby tourist attractions like Tera Manzil Temple, Ram Jhula, and Lakshman temple. Let us get to know more about this religious place of worship.History of Lakshman Jhula- Lakshman Jhula has its significance in the most popular Hindu Mythology, Ramayana. As per the tales, Lord Ram and Lakshman had crossed the river Ganga at this place. The duo crossed the river Ganga with the help of just two ropes. In order to praise this act of fearlessness, Lakshman Jhula was built. This 284 feet long suspended bridge was the main point of contact between the villages until the year 1889. However, one of the floods in the year 1924 completely washed away the bridge. Initially the Lakshman Jhula was made up of jute, however, after the floods, it was replaced by a much stronger and sturdier iron bridge in the year 1939. The reconstruction was instigated in the same place and the name of the bridge was also not changed as per the significances. The bridge now stands tall above the river Ganga and happens to be one of the major tourist attractions in the tourism corridor of Rishikesh. However, the Lakshman Jhula is no more used for communication from 12th July 2019 for safety concerns. This bridge is almost 96 years old and it is not capable of handling the load of the current traffic. In order to preserve this iconic tourist attraction, one more bridge has been built and the Lakshman Jhula stands as a mere tourist attraction near to it.

Ram Jhula

Ram Jhula is one of the most iconic places in Rishikesh and if you are planning a pilgrimage to the city, or just visiting for a holiday, you must stop by this iconic bridge. It is a suspension bridge, built entirely out of iron and the length of the bridge is around 450 feet. It was constructed in the year 1986, by the PWD. The bridge is located over the holy Ganga river and it connects Sivananda Nagar in Muni Ki Reti, in the district of Tehri Garhwal in the west to Swargashram in the district of Pauri Garhwal, in the east. This bridge can be found in the state of Uttarakhand, approximately 3 kilometres away from the main town of Rishikesh. It is a comfortable walking distance from Rishikesh, and if you like long walks in the midst of stunning scenery then you can walk the length of the bridge as well. People can also traverse the bridge with bikes or cycles. A number of holy ashrams and Hindu religious centres and temples can be found lining the side of the bridge. These ashrams encompass the true essence of Rishikesh, with their peace, hospitality and piety. Another well-known bridge in the area is the Lakshman Jhula, which is lengthier than Ram Jhula and is situated 2 kilometres upriver, on the banks of the Ganga. One of the most memorable experiences you can enjoy at the Ram Jhula is overlooking the holy city of Rishikesh from the bridge itself in all its natural and historical glory, surrounded by the river and the mighty mountains. History of Ram JhulaThe famous Ram Jhula was initially a bridge made of very strong jute ropes, tightly intertwined to give it strength and to help it bear the weight of passers-by. It did not have any pillars to provide structural support in the beginning. Later, it was re-constructed with iron in the year 1986 by the PWD under government supervision. Since it is located in the spiritual and holy city of Rishikesh, the name of the bridge is derived from the Aryan King- Lord Ram- the protagonist of the epic Ramayana. The other famous bridge on the river is the Lakshman Jhula. The story goes that in the era of Ram’s reign, Lakshman had crossed the Ganga with the help of two ropes. To commemorate this mythological event, the Lakshman Jhula was constructed with ropes, in the year 1889. Therefore, a gesture of sibling love and camaraderie between the two brothers- Ram and Lakshman, the second bridge was named ‘Ram, indicative of the divine bond between the two brothers. About Ram Jhula MarketKeeping in mind the vast number of tourists and pilgrims who visit the place every year, there are innumerable shops and markets near the starting and ending point of the bridge. The Ram Jhula Market can be found in the point where the bridge ends, where you can find shops selling everything imaginable- from groceries to mementoes and religious tokens. You can find religious sculptures, statues and framed pictures of different gods and goddesses, dress materials, jewellery and other artefacts available in the markets. One can buy authentic semi-precious stones and gems at reasonable prices from here as well. Shoppers can choose from beautiful, ethnic, locally sourced handicraft items to bright and comfortable cotton clothes like sarees, lehengas and cholis, all at reasonable prices.

  • kechjo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great fun! Highly recommended. The short summary is - I highly recommend this excursion. Not only is the river a lot of fun to raft down, the guides were great, and Red Chilli Adventures does a great job of putting together the excursion. I’ve gone whitewater rafting a half dozen times, so there were a couple of things that I really appreciated. First, in addition to the helmets and PFD (life jackets), they provided wet suits and jackets. I saw a lot of other companies that did not provide these, and it makes a huge difference in the level of enjoyment. Also, in addition to our guide in the raft (Ajeeb), Red Chilli also had two additional guides (I apologize that I don’t have their names) in kayaks. Just a level of safety that I really appreciate. It also added some fun to the trip (I’ll leave that as a surprise but you’ll like it). The group we were with was a lot of fun. We throroughly enjoyed the banter and jokes amongst the group, and the knowledge and professionalism of the guides. Again, I highly recommend this excursion with Red Chilli. We felt very safe with Red Chilli, and our guide Vishal was both careful and fun taking down the river. We had a safety canoe following us (one canoe and one raft), which I didn’t see any other operators adopting. We had the chance to observe the many different rafting companies as we did the tour, and not one looked as professional or as fun as our group had. Dave and Vishal were fantastic, kind and fun guides, and Vipin in the booking office was really helpful - he suggested we did the 26km run instead of the 16km which was a great idea, as the extra time on the water made the experience even more amazing. We felt very looked after, encouraged and safe on the water. It was so much fun and unforgettable - I wish we could do it all again! Read more Written March 8, 2024

Sahdev Rana our guide at Red Chilli did an excellent job making my husband and I feel safe. He was very professional and experienced. He provided the right equipment including a wet suit to help keep us warm. This ended up being necessary since there was a bit of a chill in the air approx 60 degrees Fahrenheit and we got a good amount of water on us from the rapids. Red Chilli provided a safety kayak to accompany us and high quality safety gear, including a helmet that covers your ears. Not all companies provide this. Sahdev gave us detailed instructions on what to do in case of an emergency. This was important to me as this was my first time rafting and honestly I was a bit nervous. He also spoke English which was wonderful as I am from the United States and I do not speak Hindi. While rafting he was very clear with his instructions and encouraging. We had an amazing time in the rapids. I felt totally safe the whole time which made my experience even better. At the end of rafting the guide bought us chai & cookies as a farewell. He was a kind and caring gentleman. I highly recommend going with this company if you are interested in rafting. There are many others but none with this high quality of service. Rafting Rishikesh

You have to try rafting in Rishikesh if you are lucky enough to visit the city! This guide has the answers to all of your questions, like the best time to go rafting, types of rapids, safety, what to wear, finding a good tour group, what to expect during the day, and more!

First of all, Rishikesh is in the northern part of India in Uttarakhand and is a popular tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts and spiritual seekers. While there’s a lot of things to do in and around the city, white water rafting in Rishikesh is truly an unforgettable adventure!

Rafting in Rishikesh involves taking a tour group up the famous Ganges River and riding the currents through the surrounding areas and into the city. It’s the perfect opportunity to embrace nature, cleanse yourself in the sacred Ganges, and see Rishikesh from a beautiful view.

I had gone rafting twice before going rafting in Rishikesh, and I was by no means an expert! It’s perfect for beginners and fun for thrill-seekers alike. I’d highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a nature-type activity and an adrenaline rush! And if you’ve never rafted before, I promise, it’s not so scary!

This post is all about rafting in Rishikesh.

Rafting in Rishikesh: Tips and FAQ’s

Why is rafting in rishikesh so special.

Rishikesh is a beautiful city on the foothills of the Himalayas and on the banks of the Ganges River! That being said, it’s no question why it’s such a popular tourist destination.

The area is famous for its stunning nature and lush greenery surrounded by mountains. The Ganges River is also extremely important to India and has been a source of life for thousands of generations. It’s a sacred river and one dip is believed to purify your soul and bring you closer to enlightenment.

Rafting in Rishikesh combines the fun and excitement of rafting while also giving you a chance to see the stunning views, immerse yourself in the river, and see the city from a new perspective!

Is it safe for beginners?

Yes! Most people who go rafting in Rishikesh are tourists who have very little or no experience ever rafting. The tour guides are completely prepared for this and will take you on a path that is suitable for your skill level.

Rafting in Rishikesh is ideal for many travelers because there are many path options depending on what level you are looking for. There are more difficult courses for more experienced rafters too.

Overall, it’s very safe and the perfect place for travelers looking to try rafting for the first time. The guides will also go over safety instructions and protocols before you start the adventure!

Rishikesh things to do

What kind of rapids can I expect?

You can find a wide range of rapids while rafting in Rishikesh. It will depend on what stretch of the Ganges you choose and also the water level when you go. Your guide will help you decide the best course for you depending on your skill level and what kind of experience you are seeking.

Rishikesh has options from Grade 1 (minimal waves, no obstacles, perfect for first-timers) all the way up to Grade 4 (really difficult and only for very advanced rafters). I did a Grade 1 course and it was a blast! Still an adventure but completely manageable and not terrifying.

The most common route for rafters is from Shivpuri to Rishikesh. It’s 16km and very easy for beginners with beautiful views! There are shorter routes and more challenging ones, but for most tourists this is perfect.

When is the best time to go rafting in Rishikesh?

September – November and March – May are the best times to go rafting in Rishikesh. These are the times with reasonable weather, clear skies and no rain.

Don’t go rafting from mid November – February as it’s winter time and freezing cold.

Rafting is also not allowed from June – October because it is monsoon season, meaning it rains every day and the water is not suitable for rafting.

How can I find a good tour group to go with?

There are literally so many tour groups that can take you rafting! Just be sure to prioritize safety over price. Most tour groups are authorized and have certifications in water sports and safety. If you see a tour group offering a suspiciously low price, it’s better to avoid them as they may not have the same safety certifications as other groups.

If you are staying at a hotel, you can always ask them as they probably have a one or two to recommend. I stayed in the Tapovan area of Rishikesh and the main street was totally filled with different tour groups that offer rafting, so it is very easy to find.

How many people can go in a group?

The rafts can hold 8 people plus the guides. If you are a group of 6 or less, you will likely be combined with other tourists in a raft.

How experienced are the guides?

The guides are typically very experienced and well-trained. They know the river very well and the challenges.

Rafting in Rishikesh is a popular tourist activity, and guides are used to bringing groups that have no experience with rafting. They are prepared to make it safe and also a fun time! Along with guiding you through the river, they will also start different cheers and keep the energy high. You will see groups cheering if you sit along the river and watch rafters go by!

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, you should book in advance. If you are planning to do rafting in Rishikesh on a weekend or during peak season, you should book far ahead of time to get the best time slot and price. At the very least during a less busy time, you will need to contact the tour company a day prior to arrange the time and plans.

Rishikesh

Are there age or any other restrictions for rafting in Rishikesh?

Most tour groups allow people 12-14 and older to go rafting. People over the age of 60 are not allowed to raft (regardless of their health) due to government rules.

You should not go rafting if you have any serious heart or health issues, or if you are pregnant. If you need to carry any medications with you, most tour guides will have a dry pouch they can take it in. Talk with your tour group if you have any questions about your health!

What does the day look like and how long does a typical rafting session last?

You will decide a pick-up point with your tour group to start the day, likely in Rishikesh at their company or else near your hotel. They will pick you up in a big jeep and take you to the starting point of the course you have chosen. Be prepared that traffic can get pretty slow during peak season so it can be a while (it can take an hour or more!)

Rafting sessions will vary on what route you go on and the distance you choose. For most people rafting from Shivpuri to Rishikesh, it’s about 2-3 hours of rafting.

Afterwards, the jeep will pick you up from the end point and bring you back to where you started the day.

Can I swim in the Ganges? Can I raft even if I don’t know how to swim?

Yes and yes! The guides will give you opportunities to get out of the raft when the water is safe so you can swim and float along the river. You are required to wear a life jacket the entire time, so even if you don’t know how to swim it is safe.

If you are a beginner, it is highly unlikely that your raft would tip over on the easy courses in Rishikesh. But in any case, the guides will prepare you for what to do in case that happens before you start the journey.

This part of the river is very clean. It’s coming from the mountains and you’re at the foothills of the Himalayas!

What should I wear for rafting in Rishikesh?

Wear light-weight, quick-dry clothing. I wore yoga capris and a quick drying athletic t-shirt. My husband wore shorts and a t-shirt. You should also bring extra dry clothes to change into afterwards.

I don’t recommend wearing a swimsuit because most people are more covered (meaning this for ladies). Also depending when you go it can be quite cold. But you could wear a swimsuit under shorts and a tank if you want.

Wear old tennis shoes, water shoes, or sandals with a strap on the back. Don’t wear flip flops or other sandals that might fall off!

The guides will give you helmets and life jackets which you are required to wear the entire time.

Can I bring my phone or camera?

Yes, but double check with your guides! Most guides will carry a dry pouch for phones and will tell you when is a safe time to get them out and take pictures.

You can also carry a dry pouch for yourself if you prefer. Just be really careful that it’s kept dry and you don’t drop it in the river! A go-pro or waterproof camera is also a great option.

What should I bring with me?

Along with wearing light-weight, quick drying clothes, bring a change of clothes for afterwards. You can also bring sunglasses, dry pouch, phone, money, and snacks (for the ride to and from if you want).

Don’t bring anything especially important like a passport as there is always the risk it could get wet or lost.

How much does it usually cost?

The price will depend on which area you want to go rafting in Rishikesh and the distance you want to travel. Expect to pay around 1000-2000 per person for the typical tourist beginner experience.

Ganga

Most importantly, have fun rafting in Rishikesh!

It’s an adventure and a memory you’ll always treasure. If you have any questions, you can always ask your guide and they will be happy to help! It can be scary at first, especially if you’ve never gone rafting before, but it is totally worth it!

Have a great journey and leave a comment if you have any other questions, I’d love to help! If you’re traveling around Uttrakhand or other places in the northeast, check out these Best Places to Visit in India by State !

River Rafting Places in Rishikesh

Why is Brahmpuri known for? It is the closest point in Rishikesh for river rafting. It is a 9 km rafting distance from Brahmpuri to Rishikesh. The mode of rafting is pretty easy here. It means even if you are new to this sport or have kids, you could begin with this range. The rapids and turns are moderate and small. Hence you wouldn’t have to go through the overwhelming adventure of extremes. It is nearly like a good boating experience with a lot of fun. There will be rafting guides and instructors all along to assist you. The time needed to finish this loop is approximately two hours. Any person within the age group of 12 to 60 years can participate in this.

The name Shivpuri means “Abode of the Mahadeva” . Shivpuri is one of the known rafting spots in Rishikesh. This range has wonderful rapids and turns such as Return to the Sender, Roller Coaster (considered as Grade 3+), T-Off, Golf Course (rated as Grade 3+), Club House, Initiation, Body Surfing, Double Trouble and Hilton . Rafting from Shivpuri to Rishikesh covers a distance of nearly 16 km. You can choose this course if you are a fun-loving, a person that likes adventure and thrill. To cover this route of 16 km, nearly 3 hours is required. But a word of caution- if you have kids or aged people, then this route should be avoided.

Marine Drive

If you are young, jubilant and have a passion for adventure – the Marine Drive Rapids may be your choice. This is one of the favourite routes for rafting adventure lovers. Marine Drive is the third closest point. Rafting from here to Rishikesh is 24-26 kms and can be covered in almost 4 hours. Marine Drive is known for the beautiful silvery sand beaches. The course is ornamented with several Rapids like Hugs and Kisses (rated as Grade 2), Black Money (rated as Grade 2), Three Blind Mice (rated as Grade 3), CrossFire (rates as Grade 3), Body Surfing (rated as Grade 2), Welcome Shivpuri (rated as Grade 2), Return to Sender (rated as Grade 2), Roller Coaster (rated as Grade 3+), Golf Course (rated as Grade 3+), Club House (rated as Grade 3+), Cash Flow (rated as Grade 2), Jail no Bail (rated as Grade 2) and Double Trouble (rated as Grade 2). All people between the age group 18-45 years can participate.

Byasi is situated almost at a distance of 30 km from Rishikesh. It is a small hamlet and is popular for its white water rafting adventures. There are several popular rapids on the way from Byasi to Rishikesh such as the Daniel Dip, Roller Coaster, Hilton, Three Blind Mice, Double Trouble Initiation and Terminator . A few of these are rated as Grade 4 rapids and known as the paradise of rafting.

Kaudiyala river rafting distance is 36 km, a little longer than the other courses. And therefore it is preferred by adventure seekers more than the average people. The time taken to cover this distance is 5-6 hours. This is a beautiful village located between Rishikesh and Srinagar, on the highway. Kaudiayala is mainly famous for the Grade 4 – The Wall rapids and the adventurous rafting experience it provides. Kids and old people should not choose this course.

The name Devprayag has been derived from the Sanskrit word of the same origin, which means confluence of the Gods. Two holy rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet here and the holy river Ganga begins from here. Imagine the thrill of paddling down the rapids and witness the wonderful view of the mighty Himalayan range at the same time. The fauna and captivating landscapes are a view of treasure. Raids at this course are graded as 3 and 3+ . Therefore this rafting expedition is considered suitable for persons between age 20-45.

River Rafting Risks and Arrangements for Safety

The fun never ends at a River Rafting Expedition. But at the same time, it is good to be aware of the risks involved and also about safety. It is due to these common rafting risks that most commercial rafting points keep themselves closed during summer or monsoon.

Most of the commercial rafting expeditions are safe. But knowing about the common risks, precautions, arrangements for preventive measures and risk management can give the tourist an added confidence.

  • Drowning is one of the common risks. Wherever there is water, there is a risk of drowning. But, when you are going into the adventure with experts, there is nothing to worry.
  • Hypothermia or effects of cold is another condition that may disturb at times. If you cannot bear too much cold, then going to a cold place with a cold river is probably not a good idea.
  • Injuries from smashing into rocks, brushing against a coarse surface, banging against the hard surface. Although precautions are taken well and there is preparedness to deal with such risks, it is advisable that you stay alert at a personal level too.

Experts and staff pay close attention to the participants so that they are not injured or become a victim of an accident. Never go out alone. Always follow instructions from your guide, mentor or trainer.

Rishikesh is a popular destination for white water rafting and attracts adventure enthusiasts from all over the world. The best time for rafting in Rishikesh is from September to June, which covers the autumn, winter, and spring seasons. Here is a breakdown of the rafting season in Rishikesh:

  • Autumn Season (October – November): The autumn season is the best time for rafting in Rishikesh. The water level is high, and the rapids are more challenging, making it ideal for experienced rafters. The weather is also pleasant, with clear skies and cool temperatures.
  • Winter Season (December – February): The winter season in Rishikesh is cold, and the water level is relatively low. However, it is still possible to go rafting during this time, especially in the lower sections of the river. The water is calmer, and the rapids are less challenging, making it ideal for beginners.
  • Spring Season (March – June) : The spring season is another good time for rafting in Rishikesh. The water level starts to rise in March, and the rapids become more challenging as the temperature starts to rise. The weather is warm and pleasant, and the river is surrounded by lush greenery.

It is important to note that during the monsoon season (July-August), the water level in the river rises significantly, and rafting is not allowed due to safety reasons. The river can also be closed for rafting during times of heavy rain or flooding.

Overall, the best time for rafting in Rishikesh is during the autumn season (September to November) and the spring season (March to June). However, it is always advisable to check the current weather and river conditions before planning your rafting trip.
