What to Wear on a Road Trip – Outfits to Inspire You

Do you enjoy road trips? Road trips can be a great way to see and visit unexplored places and make new memories – either solo, with a partner, or with a group of friends.

Road trips can be a day trip to the neighboring town or a months-long cross-state (or country) journey. No matter what your road trip looks like, you need outfits that are comfortable and suitable for long hours of sitting in a vehicle and also be ready for possibly walking about. The key word is “comfortable,” obviously.

Here are our top road trip outfits:

Denim Drive

Pretty in pink, dress for the road, safari ride.

For my road trips, I like to wear clothing that has plenty of stretch, doesn’t wrinkle easily, and is versatile.

Here are a few outfit ideas to inspire you for your next road trip. I have linked the items in each outfit as a reference, but you can assemble these looks from items that you may already have in your closet. Let me know which one is your favorite in the comments below.

Denim Drive

I love the total denim head-to-toe look. However, I don’t like to match the blue shades of the jeans’ bottom and jacket, so I make sure to break it up a bit.

Helpful tip: Make sure that your jeans have plenty of stretch and that they are not too small for you.

Match your denim with a long-sleeve (or short-sleeve, depending on the season) striped top and some red accessories. This is my all-time favorite go-to road trip look!

Find the items here:

Waist-Match™ Alina Skinny Jeans

Pima Crew-Neck Long-Sleeve Tee

Classic Denim Jacket

Woven Wool Scarf with Fringe

ECCO Sport Therap Lace Shoes

Pretty in Pink

Maybe you are taking a road trip and will be stopping at a museum or having lunch somewhere nice? This pretty Audrey Hepburn-inspired look is perfect for those classy road trips. Cardigans and scarves are always great options when traveling.

Chico’s has a collection called “Travelers” which has a great selection of clothing made with wrinkle-resistant sustainable fabric.

Dress for the Road

Stretch dresses are super comfortable for road trips, especially trendy sweater dresses. They look good with flats – and booties – and particularly good with riding boots.

Tip: You can choose to wear leggings or tights under your sweater dress for added comfort and warmth.

SUPERSOFT COLLARED SWEATER DRESS

Kenneth Cole Reaction Wind Riding Boot

LAUREN RALPH LAUREN Sparkly Reversible Knit Poncho

MICHAEL KORS ISLE OF PALMS Sunglasses

Safari Ride

Convertible pants are great for all occasions and especially in variable weather conditions. Pants that can transform into shorts in a jiffy are great for road trips – no need to stop somewhere and find a place to change clothing.

This style of pants can easily be dressed up or dressed down depending on what you match them with and how you accessorize them.

Looking for cute road trip outfits to wear on your next getaway?

I’m a big fan of road tripping, though I am typically the passenger who gets to sleep half the time 😛

I’m all about comfort when it comes to road trips – it just ain’t fun sitting in the car for long hours in tight jeans or knee-high boots.

Also, you want to make it easy to run out of the car and pee if you have to, ya know?

Okay, maybe you don’t know if you haven’t been on many road trips, but boy oh boy – when you need to pee, you need to pee.

If you’re looking to plan outfits for an entire trip, I’ve also got a blog post all about how to plan your travel outfits so you can look cute and photo-ready the entire time.

Here are some cute and comfy road trip outfits you can wear on your next getaway!

Cute road trip outfits to wear

Hike at Mono Cliffs Provincial Park in Orangeville, Ontario

  • Tee + denim shorts

Probably my go-to road trip outfit during the summer is a simple tee and denim shorts.

It’s just super easy to throw on, and it always looks good!

All about dat capsule wardrobe , y’all.

Definitely don’t wear denim shorts with a button fly and don’t wear ones that are too tight.

I also love keeping a plaid shirt tied around my waist ’cause it adds a little somethin’ somethin’, and it’s easy to throw on if it gets chilly.

Hawaii outfit - Aritzia straw hat, Zara mini dress, Fjallraven Kanken mini backpack

What’s more comfy than not wearing pants?

A cute mini dress is another one of my go-to summer road trip outfits.

It’s especially nice on hot summer days to let your thighs breathe.

Throw on a cute straw hat to spice up your look for photos!

Samuel Wilmot Nature Area in Newcastle, Ontario

Maxi dresses are also super comfy to road trip in, especially if they’re loose and flowy.

It’s a terrible habit, but I love crossing my legs while in the front seat, and maxi dresses make it easy.

Chedoke Falls, Hamilton, Ontario

  • Tank + leggings

Sometimes you just don’t want to wear an “actual” outfit, ya know?

If you’re doing hikes along the drive, it’s definitely the most comfy to throw on a tank or sports bra and leggings.

It doesn’t even have to be a boring outfit – go with a cute matching set and bam, you’re photo-ready!

Summer hiking in Long Sault Conservation Area, Bowmanville, Ontario

  • Matching workout set

I absolutely adore matching workout sets, especially if they’re bright and colourful.

It’s a super comfy outfit to wear on your road trips, and it’s especially great if you plan to do some hiking stops along the way!

Queen's University Belfast, Ireland

  • Denim on denim

As a Canadian, I love wearing denim on denim (AKA the Canadian tuxedo).

It’s a chic outfit you can wear to explore the city or make stops out in nature!

Just don’t wear tight jeans if you’re road trippin’ – unless you want to have your pants unbuttoned the entire car ride.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach in Vik, Iceland

  • Sweater + jeans

When visiting colder destinations, a comfy sweater and jeans is always my go-to outfit.

I usually pack multiple sweaters and wear the same jeans the entire trip!

You can even just wear the same sweater everyday ’cause you don’t really sweat much in colder places.

Discover the Charm of Road Trip Aesthetic: Tips and Ideas

Yara Refaat

  • Trips around the world

road trip aesthetic is a popular trend among travelers and social media influencers that focuses on capturing the nostalgic and retro vibe of a classic American road trip. It incorporates elements such as vintage clothing and accessories, classic cars, scenic landscapes, and rustic roadside motels and diners to create a distinct aesthetic that romanticizes the experience of traveling on the open road. The trend is often showcased on social media platforms like Instagram, where users share photos and videos of their road trip adventures.

Elements of Road Trip Aesthetic

The road trip aesthetic trend incorporates a variety of elements that evoke a sense of nostalgia and adventure. Some of the key elements include:

  • Vintage or retro style clothing and accessories: This can include denim jackets, bandanas, cowboy hats, vintage sunglasses, and other items that evoke a sense of classic Americana.
  • Classic cars and trucks: Road trips often involve long drives on scenic highways, and many travelers choose to incorporate classic cars or trucks into their aesthetic. This can include vintage VW buses, muscle cars, or classic pickup trucks.
  • Scenic landscapes and natural wonders: The beauty of the open road is a key component of the road trip aesthetic. Travelers often seek out scenic drives, national parks, and other natural wonders to incorporate into their photos and videos.
  • Rustic roadside motels and diners: The classic roadside motel or diner is a staple of the road trip aesthetic. These establishments often have vintage signage, neon lights, and other retro touches that make for great photo opportunities.
  • Nostalgic music and film references: Many travelers incorporate references to classic road trip movies, such as “Easy Rider” or “Thelma and Louise,” or iconic American musicians, such as Bruce Springsteen or Johnny Cash, into their social media posts.

Creating a Road Trip Aesthetic

Creating a road trip aesthetic can be a fun and creative way to capture the spirit of a classic American road trip. Here are some tips on how to achieve this aesthetic:

  • Plan your route and destinations carefully: Research the best scenic routes and natural wonders to visit along the way. Consider including some classic roadside motels or diners in your itinerary for added retro appeal.
  • Choose the right clothing and accessories: Incorporate vintage or retro style clothing and accessories into your wardrobe, such as denim jackets, bandanas, and cowboy boots. This will help you fit in with the aesthetic and make for great photos.
  • Incorporate retro and vintage elements into your photos: Look for opportunities to incorporate classic cars, scenic landscapes, and rustic roadside motels and diners into your photos and videos. These elements can add a sense of nostalgia and adventure to your social media posts.
  • Capture the beauty of the landscape: Take time to photograph the scenic landscapes and natural wonders you encounter on your road trip. Use a good camera or smartphone to capture high-quality images that you can share on social media.
  • Add music and film references to your social media posts: Consider incorporating references to classic road trip movies or iconic American musicians into your captions or hashtags. This can help to further evoke the sense of nostalgia and adventure that comes with a classic road trip.

Remember, the key to creating a road trip aesthetic is to have fun and be creative. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different elements and styles to create a unique and memorable aesthetic for your road trip.

Criticisms of Road Trip Aesthetic

While road trip aesthetic has become a popular trend among travelers and social media influencers, it has also faced some criticisms. Here are some of the criticisms that have been raised:

It can perpetuate unrealistic expectations of travel:

By focusing on the most picturesque and nostalgic elements of a road trip, the aesthetic can create unrealistic expectations of travel. It may make people think that all road trips are full of scenic views, retro diners, and fun adventures, when in reality, road trips can be tiring, stressful, and sometimes boring.

It can contribute to over-tourism:

By promoting certain destinations and attractions, road trip aesthetic can contribute to over-tourism in certain areas. This can lead to environmental damage, overcrowding, and cultural appropriation.

It can be exclusionary:

The cost of taking a road trip can be prohibitive for many people, especially those from marginalized communities. The emphasis on vintage and retro elements in the aesthetic may also exclude those who don’t identify with the dominant culture of classic Americana.

It can be overly curated:

Some critics argue that the road trip aesthetic is overly curated and staged, with travelers focusing more on getting the perfect photo than on experiencing the journey itself. This can take away from the authenticity of the travel experience.

How can I incorporate road trip aesthetic into my travel photos?

To incorporate road trip aesthetic into your travel photos, you can focus on elements such as vintage clothing, classic cars, scenic landscapes, and rustic roadside motels and diners. You can also experiment with different filters and editing techniques to create a retro or vintage feel.

Is road trip aesthetic accessible to everyone?

While road trip aesthetic can be a fun and creative way to capture the spirit of a road trip, it’s important to be aware of its potential limitations and drawbacks. The cost of taking a road trip can be prohibitive for many people, and the emphasis on vintage and retro elements in the aesthetic may exclude those who don’t identify with the dominant culture of classic Americana.

How can I be mindful of the potential pitfalls of road trip aesthetic?

To be mindful of the potential pitfalls of road trip aesthetic, it’s important to be respectful of the destinations you visit and avoid perpetuating unrealistic or exclusionary expectations of travel. This can include being mindful of environmental impact, avoiding overcrowding, and respecting local cultures and traditions.

How can I create a unique road trip aesthetic that reflects my personal style?

To create a unique road trip aesthetic that reflects your personal style, you can experiment with different elements and styles. This can include incorporating your favorite colors, patterns, and textures into your wardrobe, as well as finding unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations to visit. The key is to be creative and authentic in your approach to road trip aesthetic.

In conclusion

the road trip aesthetic trend has become a popular way for travelers and social media influencers to capture the spirit of a classic American road trip. It incorporates elements such as vintage clothing, classic cars, scenic landscapes, and rustic roadside motels and diners to evoke a sense of nostalgia and adventure.

However, it’s important to be aware of the potential pitfalls of this trend. It can perpetuate unrealistic expectations of travel, contribute to over-tourism, be exclusionary, and be overly curated. As such, travelers should strive to be mindful and respectful of the destinations they visit and avoid perpetuating these potential drawbacks.

Despite these criticisms, the road trip aesthetic trend can still be a fun and creative way to capture the spirit of a road trip. By planning your route and destinations carefully, incorporating retro and vintage elements into your photos, and embracing the beauty of the landscape , you can create a memorable and unique road trip aesthetic.

Ultimately, the key is to embrace the road trip aesthetic trend while being mindful of its potential pitfalls. By doing so, you can create a road trip experience that is both authentic and inspiring.

Best Road Trip Outfits to Travel In This Year

07/02/2021 · In: Over 50 Fashion , Special Occasion

Nina from Sharing a Journey wears a jump suit for travel

Road Trip Time! This post is about the best road trip outfits to travel in this year. It’s been over a year since we’ve taken any kind of trip, and I am longing to get out and travel again.  After considerable discussion, we’ve booked two road trips this season, one of which is a short trip with sight seeing and a stay in a bed and breakfast for a few days.  The plan is to get our feet wet by taking a short easy trip before tackling a longer multi-day on the road trip to visit family.

Trip number one entails just a few hours in the car, a family gathering on the beach, a few days of site seeing, then home.  The second trip will entail several days of driving, several days visiting family, then several days to get back home.  We even talked about making a big loop while we are out and visiting even more family—might as well, right?  All a girl needs is a pile of cute travel outfits.

So let’s get to the important stuff, putting together stylish travel clothes.  Whether you are going on a weekend getaway, or a longer trip, this is your one stop spot for travel outfits.  I love answering your questions because I ask the exact same ones  myself, and have been thinking of what to wear on these road trips ever since we started talking about them a few months ago—one will be a summer trip and the other will be in the fall.   Naturally, I want a cute road trip outfit—or actually a road trip wardrobe.  My list calls for versatile pieces that will be comfortable for the long drives. The look I’m going for is casual chic or cozy chic when we hit the open road.

Before you begin packing:

I like to check the weather as I begin my packing process, and list the activities we are planning.  I also throw in a swimsuit and workout clothes so I have a few options in case we have some down time.  Having your trip mapped out a bit on paper helps ensure you don’t end up with the wrong clothes and helps to make sure you pack a rain coat or snow clothes— or have light weight clothing in case it’s warmer than you thought.  You might consider putting together a few travel kits—one with cords, another with hand sanitizer and wipes—for gas station stops and minor emergencies—like spills and such.

road trip aesthetic outfits

Planning your road trip outfits:

  • Build your outfits around your shoes:  this works great because often shoes take up a lot of room and weight in our suitcases.  If you build your outfits around your shoes, and create outfits around two or three pair of shoes, this will really help reduce extra items in your suit case.
  • Plan each outfit in advance and take a photo of it:  I love doing this because I always seem to forget which accessories go with an outfit or some of the mix and match ideas I had when packing.
  • Look for comfortable pieces that can be worn in different combinations-this is key to avoid over packing.
  • Remember, we often end up wearing the same things over when traveling—don’t try to take it all—keep with a mix and match theme.
  • Don’t forget your undergarments, socks, bras, and panties.
  • Look for items that are easily laundered if you are going to be on the road for a long time.
  • Check the weather to ensure you don’t need rain gear or other special items for weather issues.
  • Think cozy chic or casual chic when planning the outfits you will wear in the car.
  • Don’t forget accessories to elevate your travel wear.  Honoring your personal style will help you feel more at ease when traveling.
  • Think about wearing your outfits in different ways to extend your outfits, perhaps by adding a little color, a favorite top, or graphic-t.

Nina from Sharing A Journey is wearing a blazer with joggers for a comfortable road trip outfit

What should you wear on a long car ride?

  • Tank tops, camisoles, and t-shirts:  Whether  the weather is warm or cool, I always pack these essentials.  They work great for layering, are easy to wash and wear, and can be used for sleeping, and using the gym—so you don’t have to bring workout wear, if you don’t want to. I always have a tank top and underwear in my carryon bags when we fly-you never know when you might need a change of clothing or something to sleep in.  When ever possible, I go for natural fibers in my wardrobe.  They keep you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.  Aside form linen and silk, they are easy care as well.
  • Denim jacket, cardigan or blazer:  Add something to throw over your shoulders on a cool evening, or  a “third piece” to create a chic look.  Denim jackets are super versatile-but if you aren’t feeling the denim jacket vibe, elevate your look with a blazer or choose a big cozy cardigan.  I always take a light jacket or sweater in the summer because air conditioning can be so cold, and these versatile pieces are great options in the cooler months—we always need those layers.
  • Leggings yoga pants and joggers:   I swear by my black leggings, wide leg yoga pants and comfy joggers on road trips.  Because I’m not super laid back casual, I will add an oversized blazer or cardigan over leggings and a long duster over joggers to elongate and slim the look.
  • Oversized Button Down:  I love an oversized button in natural fibers such as linen or light weight cotton for summer, and something a bit thicker for winter.  Having a shirt with long sleeves is great over a bathing suit, or under a sweater in the winter. Some companies sell women’s travel shirts made of fabric which is easy to wash and wear—so if you are planning a long trip, or you travel a lot, you might want to check out travel specific clothing which is made to resist creasing, and is easy to wash and layer.
  • Midi or Maxi Dress: During the summer months I love to wear dresses, and they can be a comfortable and chic travel option allowing you to look put together while traveling or site seeing.  Packing your favorite summer dress to have on hand for dinners and unexpected occasions is always a good idea.
  • Comfortable shoes :  Some swear by flip flops—but I am not one—for travel, I like to have a comfortable pair of shoes and a pair or sandals for summer and a pair of trainers or booties and a pair of dress shoes for winter.  The reason I don’t like flip flops is because you never know what type of situation you might find yourself in on the road, so having a pair of regular shoes is a safe bet. Some like ballet flats or loafers for travel; these are a matter of personal style and taste.
  • Skinny Jeans and Travel Pants: When considering whether to bring jeans, cargo pants, or travel pants, make sure they are comfortable and flattering.  Sometimes skinny jeans can be a bit binding and uncomfortable when you ride or are seated for a long time.  A pair of denim jeans might be great to take on the trip, but for the car ride you might feel more comfortable in something with a little stretch.
  • Packing for the seasons:  In summer, don’t forget a a bathing suit, sunscreen, and bug spray.  For winter, remember to pack a winter coat and boots.

How to look good when you arrive at your destination

It can be challenging to look good after long drives.  Touch up your makeup and comb through your hair just before arrival. Wear a nice outfit so when you step out of the car you will look pulled together.  Avoid fabrics that rumple and crease. Look for clothes that have that casual chic vibe and are comfortable when sitting long hours in the car.  If you like to ride in the car without shoes on, slip them on so you don’t have to look for them when you arrive.

Take a rest break just before arrival to  gather yourself, tidy the car and be sure you look presentable. This way, we can get out of the car and greet family members or go into a hotel we look good.

It makes it easier for the valet if the car is tidy, and it is a courteous gesture not to hold everyone up while you fumble around looking for your belongings when you arrive.

If you are jumping into action when you arrive, be sure to dress in adventure ready clothes—for what ever activity you have planned.  Again, it’s always a good idea, unless you simply don’t have time, to be prepared and ready to go, no matter what adventure awaits you.

What not to wear on a road trip

  • Avoid fussy clothing that creases easily,
  • Avoid  flip-flops—wear shoes instead to protect your feet.
  • Avoid shoes that are difficult to take off, especially when flying.
  • Avoid over-packing—we often end up wearing the same comfortable outfits over and over while traveling.  When unpacking after a trip take note of what you wore and didn’t wear so you won’t take items you know you won’t wear.
  • Avoid traveling in pajamas.  There was a time when people dressed in their best clothes.  These days, it’s not uncommon to see people wearing their pajamas in public.  Try to put together “every day wear” rather than what you wear in your bedroom.  The objective is to look stylish in your travel clothes.
  • Avoid wearing workout clothing to travel.  Blend workout pieces like leggings with a graphic-t and perhaps a Moto jacket so that you don’t look like you just came from the gym.

Accessories can often add comfort and an extra element of style to your travel outfits .

  • Sun glasses are great for sunny days-obv-but can also be worn on a “no makeup” day.  Just add a bold lip and you are good to go.
  • A cross body bag or a tote bag (I often take both and pack my handbag inside the tote bag.  Having a small clutch that can hold your cell phone, room key and money is also really good when you are pool side or just going to the lobby for a drink.
  • Lip balm is great for dry air and cold climates. Nothing worse that cracked dry lips!
  • Extra hair ties are always handy-and who knows-you might  use one MacGuiver your self out of a tight situation!
  • Hand sanitizer (and face masks) wipes and a first aid kit are always good to have on hand.
  • Consider the size and shape of your luggage—a duffle bag is perfect for weekend getaways, while a roller suit case is best for longer trips.  I also like to use a carry on bag for weekend getaways, they are a perfect size for short trips.

As I write this, I am thinking about my best travel clothes—most of which are a part of my everyday wear.  At the end of the day, we want to look and feel amazing when we travel-right? I hope this post has helped you put together cute outfits perfect for your next road trip.  Whether you are heading to a warm or cool climate.  I hope you’ll look chic when you reach your destination.

Getting ready for an upcoming getaway and wondering what to wear on a road trip ? Take the guesswork out of that question and use my guide for comfort and style while traveling by car. Plus, I’m sharing 7 road trip outfits that will help you stay comfy while looking cute!

Our family has taken so many road trips and I’ve definitely learned what works for road trips and also what you don’t want to wear! Hint, avoid any pants that have buttons on the back pockets!

Dressing For Comfort When Driving Long Distances

Long-distance traveling means spending lots of time sitting in one seat with little to no wiggle room. All the more reason to make sure you are dressing comfortable and able to enjoy the ride.

Where Are You Going? Know Your Destination & Purpose

Deciding what to wear for your journey should be the very next objective after getting your travel plans in order. Once you know where you’re going and what you’ll be doing, you can then think about the attire to wear on the way. I personally dress more “beachy” when my family and I are headed toward the ocean. If going to the mountains, I seem to go for the cardigans and my year-round boots.

Overall, know where you are going and what you will be doing there. Keep in mind any stops on the way as well. If you’re planning to stop for a hike or a dip in a lake along the route, plan for that when choosing your outfit for the day. Plus, you might want to have a pair of boots or flip-flops in the back for easy access at your stop. We often keep a duffel bag or day bag at the ready with stuff we might need for stops along the way.

How Long Will You Be In Car

Going hand-in-hand with knowing where you’re going, it’s also a good idea to calculate the amount of time you’ll be spending in the car. Don’t forget to calculate the stops you plan to take and consider where those will be.

Whether you’ll be doing a lot of sightseeing along the way or stopping at lots of rest stops, you’ll want to be properly dressed. Chances are for long periods of time, the more comfortable you’ll want to dress.

How Cute Do You Have To Be When You Get There?

I know I’m not the only one that has ever asked this question, that’s why I wanted to address it. There are a couple of ways to approach being cute upon arrival. Of course, it all depends on where you’re going, but overall, it’s a personal choice. After long hours in a car no one can expect to look completely cute. :)

If you’re going straight to your hotel room or beach rental at the end of the day, then perhaps lounge attire will do. However, if you’re rolling into town and immediately having dinner at a nice restaurant, you may want to consider a glow-up pit stop and outfit change before arriving at your final destination.

Start With Shoes And Build Up for Your Perfect Comfy Road Trip Outfit

Every gal knows it’s about the shoes. A complete outfit can change because of them, and that’s why I recommend starting with them in order to put together your cozy road trip outfits.

What Makes Comfy Travel Shoes?

When it comes to comfort and travel, think in terms of lightweight, not too tight, breathable, and easy to take on and off. Although you’ll be doing a lot of sitting and making occasional pit stops, you don’t want your feet to be uncomfortable at all.

If you’ll be tag-teaming the driving, I recommend a shoe that won’t get stuck under the pedal (like flip flops) or won’t make the driving uncomfortable overall.

In some instances, you may want to consider keeping a couple of pairs of shoes on hand: one pair for driving and the other for riding. And as I mentioned above, if you’re making any activity stops along the way you might want to pack a change of shoes in the back within easy reach.

Stylish Walking Sandals for Travel

Sandals can be quite comfy when traveling in the car. The plus side is they give your feet the ability to breathe and if you find your ideal pair, they’ll provide good support as well. There are many different types of sandals so it all depends on where you’re traveling to and what you’ll be doing.

Also keep in mind that some sandals might not be comfortable or safe to drive in, so as I said before you may want to keep a closed-toe slip-on shoe on hand if you’re driving and swap into your sandals when you’re the passenger.

The KEEN Women’s Whisper Sandal ( Zappos , Amazon ) is ideal for adventurous travels and destinations. It’s extremely popular with travelers as you can drive, hike, and even swim in them! While the classic Birkenstock Sandal ( Zappos , Amazon ) is more for fashion with a touch of comfort. I’m also a big fan of Sanuk sling sandals ( Zappos , Amazon ) with their yoga mat soles.

Slip-ons are ideal because they are easy on the foot and… well, they slip-on . This makes it easier when traveling with family and having to get in and out of the car often. I’ve started making my girls wear slip-on shoes only when we’re on a road trip.

Slip-on shoes come in a variety of styles and support levels and are some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn! A few good ones for traveling by car (especially long drives) are:

  • Sketchers Go Walk ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Vionic Beach Malibu ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Vans Classic ComfyCush Slip-On ( Zappos , Amazon )

Ballet Shoes for Travel

Another type of slip on shoes that can be great to wear on a road trip when you want to look cute are ballet shoes. These style of flats are casual but can pair well with a travel dress or cute road trip outfit.

Some of my favorite flat ballet shoes that are stylish and comfortable include BOBS by Sketchers ( Zappos , Amazon ( other colors ) this is more of a slip-on but you can find cute styles that made me put it under this category. And they’re super comfortable and easy to get on and off.

For a more traditional ballet shoe for traveling, check out the Lucky Brand Emmie ( Zappos , Amazon ), ECCO Ballerina ( Zappos , Amazon ), Vionic Minna ( Zappos , Amazon ), Anne Klein Tamara ( Zappos , Amazon ), Dansko Kira ( Zappos , Amazon ), or Aerosoles Homerun ( Zappos , Amazon ).

Comfortable Ankle Boots for Travel

If you’re planning to travel when the weather is a little cooler you might want to wear some boots. But remember that you want to keep your footwear lightweight and comfortable for a long trip, ankle boots are a good option. Most hiking boots tie, but ankle boots are often pull on or have side zippers, making them easy to put on and take off.

  • Arcopedico L8 Boot ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Born Kerri ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Minnetonka Hi-Top ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Clarks Adella Cove ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Clarks Adreena Hope ( Zappos , Amazon )

Cute and Comfy Tennis Shoes

Of course, you can’t go wrong with a good tennis shoe for comfort, but depending on your car ride you may want to strongly consider another option. Oftentimes, tennis shoes/sneakers/runners can cause your feet to sweat and may not provide much comfort if your feet swell during your long travels.

With the various styles available today, you can get a pair of tennis shoes that don’t quite look like you’re headed to the gym, yet keep your feet comfy and supported. Tennis shoes with mesh are also a top pick because they allow your feet to breathe.

Keep in mind that if you want to take off your shoes during the drive, you’ll have to deal with re-tieing them at each stop if you don’t get a no-tie version. A few styles I love to wear on a road trip are:

  • adidas Cloudform Pure ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Vionic Beach Pismo ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Nike Tanjun ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Taos Star Burst ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Brooks Ghost 13 ( Zappos , Amazon )

What are the Best Pants for Traveling?

Now that we’ve talked about shoes, let’s talk about what to put on those legs.

Leggings and Jeggings: The Ultimate Road Trip Wear

Hands down, I believe leggings and jeggings are some of the best clothes for road trips. Why? For starters, they come in so many different colors and styles, it’s impossible to list and name them all. Secondly, they can be paired with anything. And lastly, I have yet to come across a pair that wasn’t comfortable.

It seems the biggest choices are between the color you want to wear and if it has some extras, such as the side pocket for your cell phone. And if you don’t like tight leggings, you can also find some looser yoga pants that are super comfortable.

My teenage daughter has gotten me hooked on aerie leggings . They’re super soft and don’t have a see-through fabric issue! Plus they make versions that have a phone pocket which can be super helpful when traveling. Of course, lululemon leggings are definitely considered the premium brand of leggings and look great on most body types.

Jeggings are also an option if you’re trying to avoid bulky jeans but still not look like you’re wearing leggings. You can find jeggings at most of your favorite stores like Old Navy , Target, and American Eagle.

Best Pants for Travel

One of my favorite things to wear on a long flight is outdoor pants. I really like these hiking pants from Columbia . But I’ve also found these pants from Prana to be ideal for travel! They both seem to be great adventure-ready clothes for stops along the way. They are so comfortable but also depending on the color and type of top you pair it with you can make them pass as cuter and a little dressier than leggings.

If you’re planning for a summer road trip, you might be tempted to wear shorts on your trip. A couple of words of caution about wearing shorts, 1) they can often bunch up on the seat and if you have leather seats you might stick to the seat which will be uncomfortable. 2) often you’ll want to keep the AC on in the car if it’s hot outside, so if you’re wearing shorts you may get cold. Of course, if you run hot then shorts are probably a great choice for you!

Should You Wear Pajamas for a Road Trip?

I vote a strong no on wearing pajamas for your next road trip simply because there are so many pajama-like outfits that would be just a comfortable, yet casual and cute. There’s also the times when you’ll be getting out of the car to check out something along your journey or stopping for a break. Chances are you’d be a lot more confident when you’re not wearing your PJ’s.

Instead, opt in for a cute loungewear set, or even just leggings, a tee, and a soft cardigan.

Cute, Comfy Travel Outfit Sets For A Road Trip

As an alternative to wearing your PJs on a road trip, wearing a cute yoga outfit or loungewear set can make for a super comfortable ride. And these days leisurewear seems to be making a comeback with even tracksuit sets available.

Keep in mind if you’re traveling when it’s hot you might want to make sure the material is comfortable and breathable. Rompers are also super cute and comfy, and they’re popular and easy to find. Just make sure they’re a pull-on/off style and not button-up. You don’t want to deal with buttons when you’re making a pit stop.

7 Road Trip Outfits

I used some of the clothes and shoes I’ve mentioned to create these road trip outfit ideas. Each of them pairs a comfortable piece of clothing together to look cute.

If you get cold or hot easily, you might want to look for organic cotton options for your clothing. It’s a sustainable material and great options for temperature regulation.

Comfy And Cute Road Trip T-Shirt Ideas

If you plan on going on a long road trip, you need to know what to pack and wear throughout the journey. It’s important to pack the right clothes for the different types of weather you’ll experience. Whether it’s raining, chilly, hot, or humid, you’ll have everything you need to feel your best on your road trip. T-shirts can be great for layering so you can pair them with a cozy cardigan or jacket.

Comfortable Loose Fitting T-Shirts to Feel Good Wherever You Go

When you want to feel comfortable wherever you’re going and whatever you’re doing, order some comfortable loose-fitting t-shirts. Two of my favorite places to buy cozy, loose tees are from prAna and aerie . You’ll find these comfortable, fashionable shirts are available in various colors.

Tees will go with just about any bottoms, including jeggings, shorts, hiking pants, and leggings! And you can also buy some tees with long sleeves if you get cool in the car.

Cute Custom Graphic Tees From Etsy to Stay Fashionable

Make a fashion statement on your road trip while wearing cute custom graphic tees from Etsy . You can get a special cute t-shirt custom designed by artists. For example, if you’re doing a road trip as a bachelor party celebration, you may want custom shirts for each person to wear, including the bride, maid of honor, and bridesmaids. In addition to Etsy, you can also find cute road trip graphic tees at Jane.com.

Trip Wear Dresses

Wrinkle free wrap around dresses.

When planning to make a stop to have a night of fun at a bar, club, or restaurant, having a wrinkle-free wrap-around dress to wear is ideal. These dresses allow you to have a chic look while staying comfortable. Wearing a dress is also very convenient for pitstops along the road!

A few of my favorite travel dresses are:

  • Janey Foundation Dress from prAna
  • Kosan Go Travel Dress
  • Women’s Maxi Dress from Columbia
  • Short-Sleeve Wrap Dress from Gap
  • Pack-and-Go Dress from Orvis

Layering Clothes For Car Travel and Weather

You can’t go wrong with packing a few tank tops to wear. They’re perfect to have when traveling during the hot weather. Tank tops go with everything, including shorts, pants, and even skirts. No matter what you plan to wear on your legs, you can pair it with a tank top!

Cotton T’s

Keep it cozy and comfortable with cotton t-shirts. You’ll find a massive selection of cotton t-shirts at some of your favorite stores in lots of unique colors. Tees can be great for layering with a cardigan or sweatshirt.

Sweat Jackets

If it starts getting chilly, you’ll be glad that you packet a sweatshirt to wear. The great thing about a “sweat jacket” is that it can be zipped closed and you don’t have to deal with pulling it over your head. Most sweat jackets come with a hood attached, which is perfect for protecting your hair when it’s raining outside. Hoodies also work great for blocking out sound and light when you’re trying to sleep in the car!

When you’re wearing a tank top or t-shirt, you can easily pair it with a cardigan. The cardigan will keep you warm when it’s just a bit chilly. Just like sweatshirts and t-shirts, cardigans are available in many colors and styles. Cardigans are a great alternative to sweatshirts to help you look cute. They also pair well with travel dresses!

Outerwear for Long Car Rides

If you’re going on a long car ride with cold weather, don’t forget to add some outerwear to your winter packing list . You’ll want a warm coat, hat, and gloves. When you’re traveling where it’s sunny, don’t forget to pack a hat to help block sunlight from your face. You can also consider packing a rain jacket or denim jacket if you’re traveling during the spring or summer.

What Not To Wear on a Road Trip

When you’re going on a road trip, never wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If it’s too tight or doesn’t fit right, leave it at home. If you don’t like the way jeans make you feel, don’t bring them. The goal is to pack items that are lightweight and comfortable to ensure that you feel great during your trip.

The main things I won’t wear on a road trip are jeans (unless it’s a very short car ride), shoes that tie, and any undergarments that are uncomfortable. Ladies, make sure you’re wearing your most comfortable bras when you’re heading out on a road trip!

For me, comfort is the #1 thing to keep in mind when planning what to wear on a road trip. No matter how long you’re spending in the car – you just can’t go wrong with comfy! Keep in mind all the tips I said above, find a great pair of shoes, pair it with some great pants, and then keep in mind layering when you’re planning your tops. Now you’re ready to hit the open road!

15 Road-Trip Outfits to Wear During Your Thanksgiving Travels

Eva Thomas

If you live close to home or simply can't afford to buy a plane ticket (they can get expensive this time of year!) to get home for Thanksgiving, a road trip with your best friends is your second best option. Sure, you might not arrive at your destination as quickly as if you were flying, but think of all the fun places you'll stop along the way. Plus, you'll save tons of money if you opt out of a plane ticket, which means more to spend during Black Friday.

One way to make a long (or short) drive more fun? Wearing something that's cozy and loose. Think of what you'd normally sport to the airport, and take a similar approach. We're talking sweaters, sweatpants, stretchy jeans, and sneakers. Think about the comfort level of each piece, and ask yourself, Can I wear said item for hours on end while sitting in a car?

Ahead, we've rounded up the best looks to wear during your holiday road trip.

How To Dress For A Casual Weekend Trip

Fun in the sun.

Outfits for weekend trips

There’s perhaps no better feeling than catching rays on a relaxing week-long vacation — with your laptop far out of reach. But there’s also something to be said about quick weekend trips, especially in May. Sure, you may only be gone for roughly 48 hours, but escaping your space is always much-needed after months confined indoors. And the outfit planning is part of the fun. Those new warm-weather looks — talking about you, maxis and shorts — that have been forming wrinkles in your closet are now getting the chance to see the sunlight.

However, when it comes to the style scene, not all destinations are the same. For instance, should you be jetting off to Miami, not only will you want to bring bathing suits and cover-ups, but dressed-up separates and kitten heels are essential for evenings out on the town. (Many restaurants in the city even have an enforced dress code prohibiting casual sandals.) On the other hand, if a jaunt to the countryside is right around the corner, you needn’t worry about packing anything super elevated; laid-back staples like a lightweight knit, denim shorts, and clogs will suffice.

For more cute weekend trip outfit ideas, we’ve rounded up five can’t-go-wrong formulas below.

Easy & Chic

View on Instagram

Since a weekend trip goes by in the blink of an eye, don’t waste any time contemplating your outfit. A breezy maxi skirt will take the guesswork out of getting dressed. From a basic white ripped tank to a linen button-down, the number works with myriad wardrobe staples. Top off the look with a wide-brim hat, and take to the boardwalk (or beach) in style.

Blue Striped Pannier Skirt

Before you paint the town red, enjoy the sunny — and steamy — Miami weather by the shore. Teaming your bikini top with easy drawstring pants or shorts is a sound idea should you get the itch to grab a refreshing smoothie from the local juice shop. A large tote to house your beach snacks also doesn’t hurt.

Chloe Bikini Top

Preppy Cool

If you’re an early bird, beat the morning rush at the area’s go-to café. To get out the door in a jiffy, a striped pullover — it may still be chilly in the mornings! — and pinstriped boxer shorts combo won’t disappoint. Lastly, throw on comfy sneakers just in case you end up exploring the nearby boutiques.

The Tatum

Sporty Spice

Nature is calling! If you reside in a city, catch the train and head somewhere with a lot of greenery (New Yorkers love the Catskills). Whether a brewery or a scenic stroll through the open fields is on deck, go for chill looks, like, say, a sports jersey and neutral kicks. Gold hoops and a leather bag will add just the right amount of polish to the outfit.

Knox Top

As noted, it can still get a bit brisk this month, especially early on in the day. That being said, to ensure you’re well prepared for whatever the forecast calls for, don’t forget to throw plenty of layering pieces in your weekend bag. For the bottom half of your outfit, look for a roomy, relaxed pant, such as cool cargos. Once dinner rolls around, swap your knits for a chic flowy blouse.

What to Pack for Russia: Summer

Written By: Julia K.

If you made it to Moscow, Russia during summer, you’re in luck. Moscow offers a plethora of beautifully landscaped parks and festivals all over the city. If you want to know how to visit all those locations in style, continue reading!

Traveling to Russia in the winter? Read this post instead.

Packing List for Russia in the Summer

Summers in Moscow can get hot. It can range between 77-86°F (25-30°C) and sometimes be humid. Dressing appropriately, comfortably, and accordingly will save you a headache and make your stay more enjoyable.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Must-see attractions during summer include many parks, such as VDNH, Chistyye Prudy, Izmaylovo and Izmailovsky Park, and of course the famous antique and flea market called Vernisaj.

Start by reading these general tips on packing for summer travel:

  • Top Summer Dresses Perfect for Europe
  • Lightweight Jackets for Easy Layers

One can see a range of different styles in Moscow. After all, it’s a hub for many travelers, businesspeople, and locals. However, if you’d like to be perceived and treated in a particular way, then pay attention to the way you dress.

You may attract unwanted attention if you wear clothing that’s inappropriate to the local culture. Observe what people are wearing around you and these tips should help point you in the right direction before you arrive.

The following suggestions are based on the perspective of a local born in Moscow.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to any of the parks:

  • Dressy shorts or a midi skirt (no shorter than one hand above the knee)

Pro tip: Take a mosquito repellent just in case and apply sun protection wherever you go.

What not to wear:

As a local, I wouldn’t recommend wearing flip flops, short shorts, mini skirts, bright makeup, or see-through clothes. It’s a good idea not to show cleavage, unless you have a layer underneath. Choose understated jewelry instead of flashier pieces.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to a festival:

Shopping tips:

Moscow has every single store you could think of! From global luxury brands to everyday wear, it caters to many budgets.
