Safari Activities

Activity options on safari.

There are a wide range of activities possible on your safari in Africa — almost anything you can dream of is offered somewhere in the safari world. Game drives are the core of most safaris since that is the easiest, most effective way to view the wildlife. However, if your dream includes something less obvious, such as safari on horseback, tracking wildlife with a Bushman guide , or even learning to drive a 4×4 off road, let us know what you are interested in and we can help plan your perfect safari. Many safari travelers enjoy a bit of variety in activities, so there are growing opportunities for walking, biking, and canoeing. But, for the hard core wildlife enthusiast, your safari can be made up exclusively of game drives – the beauty of a custom planned trip is tailoring the activities to exactly what you want.

Below is an overview of activities, but if you don’t see what you are interested in, just ask your planner, as almost anything is possible.

Safari Game Drives

safari animal activities

A game drive is a safari using 4×4 vehicles typically with three rows of seats behind the driver. We prefer to use camps that limit the vehicle occupancy to no more than six guests per vehicle so that everyone is guaranteed a “window seat.” Some vehicles  have a seat in front for a tracker who helps the guide search for wildlife and “reads” the road for tracks. The vehicles also feature open sides with removable sun canopies.

It is common for overland trips to utilize closed vehicles, which protect guests from dusty roads while in transit. Some parks, such as the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania , require that all vehicles are closed. Not all vehicles are created equal, however. The Wild Source Tanzania has custom-designed Land Cruisers with extra large, removable windows to provide an open feel and better access for photography.

Night Drives

safari animal activities

Night drives are widely available, aside from within National Parks (National Parks in Zambia are an exception). They can vary in form and rhythm. A night drive in a safari vehicle might happen on your way back to camp following a sunset cocktail hour or it may be more involved, setting out from camp after dinner to search for nocturnal species. Some camps accommodate night drive requests better than others, and not all experiences are created equal. If nocturnal animals are important on your checklist, you’ll need to design accordingly. For those who enjoy predator viewing, it’s a huge advantage to be able to stay out after dark rather than having to return back to camp by sunset.

Depending on your location, following a stop for a sundowner drink, the guide (or tracker/spotter) will use a spotlight to search for animals after dark on your way back to camp. If you run into great activity, such as hunting lions , the night drive may extend longer as you stick with the action. This adds to the diversity of your wildlife experience  as about a third of species are typically only active at night. Animals such as big cats are often more active at night, giving you the chance to witness more behavior.

Walking Safaris

safari animal activities

Walking safaris can vary widely depending on the destination. They can be a simple, fun activity like a 1-hour nature walk up to full day outings in search of megafauna. What they all have in common is the opportunity to experience the African bush with all of your senses, learn the deeper connections among species, and ensure you are traveling with a local guide who has surpassed the minimum qualification levels. Walking safaris generally are not strenuous. Depending on the season, walks might be offered as a supplement to a game drive rather than an entirely separate activity if the midday heat needs to be avoided.

Taking to foot opens up a whole new world. It is a chance to discover little things that are rarely experienced from the vehicle. Special attention is given to looking at spoor (tracks) and other signs such as dung or leopard scratches on a tree. This is also a time to learn about plants and how locals make use of them.

Many active travelers are simply excited to get some exercise and break up the game drive routine. Please keep in mind, bush walks in safari areas are not high pulse exercise walks.  The presence of large, potentially dangerous wild animals requires that the guide leads you with bush craft, paying attention to the wind and where you are traveling. By moving with such purpose, it is actually a very safe activity. If you do encounter big wildlife it is amazing; seeing any large megafauna on foot feels quite different then seeing them from a vehicle.

In most areas, a walk is an activity of 2 to 3 hours, in lieu of a game drive. There are some places where you can have a safari that focuses on serious walking, taking to foot daily and sometimes walking between camps. In Zambia and Zimbabwe , walking safaris have been a regular highlight for decades. Because walks are such a regular activity in these countries, much of the wildlife has become habituated to humans walking among the landscape thus making it possible to view more species, and get closer on foot than is possible in other safari areas.

Cultural Engagement

Bushman Plains Camp culture

Having quality cultural experiences is both the easiest and most challenging facet to incorporate into a safari. The ‘easy’ comes from the organic cultural experience of just being in the company of your local guide, camp staff, and, depending on your location, passing through local towns along your journey.

Planning additional cultural visits is highly recommended and a wonderful way to learn. The challenge is finding low impact, less touristic opportunities that are located near excellent game viewing. This is not always an easy task but we have a list of recommended places that offer high quality cultural interactions with the Bushmen, Hadza, Maasai, Samburu, Himba and others. There are also more cosmopolitan opportunities in larger cities and villages.

'Mokoro' Canoe Safari and Boat Safaris

safari animal activities

In locations with rivers, flood channels, or lakes there are often opportunities to take to the water in various craft. Canoeing is ideal for active adventure travelers and can be done as one activity or as a multi-day safari. In Botswana’s Okavango Delta , ‘mokoro’ is the traditional dugout canoe. Your guide poles the canoe along like a gondola. Power boat safaris are a popular activity on the channels and lagoons of the Okavango Delta.  Kayaking is available in many coastal areas, or on rivers such as the Zambezi River – – which spans from the lower Zambezi in Zambia down to where it meets the Indian Ocean in Mozambique. White water rafting is possible in adventure destinations like Victoria Falls.

Instead of staying at a fixed safari lodge or tented camp, An overnight boat safari provides you with your own accommodations on…. you guessed it: a boat. Extended 2-3 night safaris on house boats are a relaxing way to explore larger waterways such as the Chobe River which meanders along the northern part of Chobe National Park. Fishing is also popular in many boating areas, where you can catch-and-release tiger fish, for example. The safari animal selection is quite abundant as well. You’re bound to see hippo, crocodiles, and many more exciting fauna that congregate at the water to cool off and rehydrate.

If boat-based activities and viewing different animals from the water are priorities, you’ll want to design your trip to include destinations where these activities abound, as some East African countries or regions within southern Africa offer very few water activities.

Wildlife Research

Citizen Science data collection

Some wildlife researchers invite guests to participate in their activities or will give special lectures. If you have a special interest in research, let us know and we can tailor your itinerary accordingly. We have connections with wildlife biologists and leading research organizations, as well as sample itineraries tailored to research interests of African animals such as cheetah conservation in Serengeti National Park, or elephant identification near Tarangire National Park, that can serve as a starting point – especially if you want to center your learning and research around a particular animal.

In Tanzania, we employ a team of local biologists who are studying the big cats of the Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystems. During your Tanzania safari it’s possible for the biologists to join your game drive as you help them collect and record observational data that is submitted to leading research and conservation organizations.

Wildlife Interactions and Encounters

safari animal activities

This is an area we are very wary of as we are always concerned about the welfare of the animals involved. These projects are often described as having a conservation purpose when they are actually just a money maker.

For those who want to be hands-on, there is an excellent opportunity to do so in Botswana with orphaned elephants. In Botswana and South Africa there are also chances to be in close proximity to habituated meerkats. In Kenya, there are opportunities to visit reputable wildlife rescue sanctuaries like the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and AFEW Giraffe Center.

safari animal activities

Trekking opportunities in Africa are abundant, from the multi-day summit of Africa’s tallest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro, to the desert landscape of the Tok Tokkie Trail in Namibia , to the vast Simian Mountains of Ethiopia. There are full-day treks such as the treks to endangered mountain gorillas and other primates of Uganda , Rwanda , Tanzania, and the Congo.

Trekking can range anywhere from a half-day to multiple days depending on the experience. While wildlife opportunities are possible, trekking generally does not provide as plentiful of megafauna as standard game drives, save for the mountain gorillas, which is one of the most intimate wildlife experiences available on the continent.

The experience of trekking offers an immersion in nature and a different way to enjoy the landscapes of the continent, and combines well with a traditional safari.

Hot Air Balloon on Safari

safari animal activities

Horseback / Camelback

safari animal activities

Central Kenya and Botswana are two of the best destinations for horseback safaris. There are select safari operators that specialize in horseback safaris. Many safaris are multi-day rides and require a high level of skill as you really integrate into the wild. Some places also offer one-off shorter rides that are suitable for other levels. Camels are another option for a one-off activity or a multi-day trip.

Quad Biking / ATV

safari animal activities

If you are seeking a bit more adrenaline and adventure, some areas offer quad biking and ATV related safari activities. This is most commonly available in the desert regions of Botswana, such as the Makgadikgadi salt pans where you can cruise across the vast desert landscape, and sometimes even sleep out under the stars. This activity is more common in areas where landscape and scenery are the draw more than wildlife viewing.

Scuba / Snorkeling / Beach

safari animal activities

Africa has thousands of miles of coast providing lots of high quality opportunities to visit beaches and high quality reefs with scuba or snorkeling.  Some of the best shark and whale viewing areas in the world are off the coast of South Africa, while the exotic island of Zanzibar off Tanzania’s east coast offers unprecedented diving opportunities.  If you are a serious diver, we can tailor the beach portion of your safari trip accordingly.

8 Unique African Safari Activities You Must Do!

Jul 24, 2020 | Adventure Safari , Most Popular Blogs , Safari Tips

Unique African safari activities

Game Drives are the most common African safari activity. They are how you go deep into the bush to see the animals, and it is the focus of most safaris. But did you know that there are other unique African safari activities that can enrich your experience?

You do not have to spend all your time in a vehicle while on safari. You can experience the beauty, tranquility, and awe-inspiring majesty of Moremi Game Reserve , the Okavango Delta , and Chobe National Park in a variety of ways.

8 Unique African Safari Activities

In Botswana and with Brave Africa, eight amazing African safari experiences can help you enjoy the widest breadth of landscapes and wildlife possible. They will make your safari worth it !

Let’s take a look at what they are and how you can enjoy them.

1. Walking Safaris

Walking Safari Activity

On walking safaris, your guide will take you off the beaten path to explore the bush on foot.

Walking safaris are a back-to-basics approach to safari. You leave the car and follow your guide into the bush on foot. This way of exploring Botswana gives you a far deeper and more intimate connection with the landscape and the animals.

A walking safari is not about spotting a lot of wildlife. It’s about experiencing nature in a more personal way. During your walk, you’ll discover a new kind of peace and connection with the bush. You’ll listen to the wind as it rustles through the trees, birds calling to each other, and more that you’d never notice in a vehicle.

On a walking safari, you can also track animals through areas a vehicle could never go. Your guide will make sure you are downwind and then take you right up to a herd of elephants, a pride of lions, or an obstinacy of buffalo.

Don’t worry; the chances of finding yourself in a scary situation are rare. Walking safaris are only completed by Level 3 guides who have the experience and training necessary to keep you safe.

A highly qualified Level 3 guide is an expert in tracking and animal behavior. They know when and how to approach animals, where to walk, and how to handle almost any situation. On top of that, your guide is always armed on a walking safari.

This is a “just in case” measure that is available as a last resort if something goes wrong. However, neither of our Level 3 guides have ever had to fire their weapon in a combined 20 years of guiding.

How to Schedule a Walking Safari

When you book a safari with Brave Africa, we automatically include walking safaris while in Khwai. To ensure a walking safari is on your to-do list, let us know during the booking process so we can plan appropriately.

2. Mokoro Safari (Canoe Safari)

Mokoro Safari with Brave Africa

A mokoro safari is a peaceful and unique way to explore Botswana’s bush.

The most serene, sublime, and unique African safari activity is the mokoro safari—dug-out canoe safari. It is like no other experience in the bush and offers a fascinating way to explore the beauty of Botswana up close and personal.

Only available in the Okavango Delta, a traditional mokoro safari is absolutely enchanting. You’ll take a journey through reed-lined channels in a handcrafted canoe, propelled with poles and guided by local experts.

From the vantage point of the water, everything becomes larger and grander. Trees will tower overhead as you glide in relative silence through the peaceful waters. With no engine noise, you’ll be able to hear everything from the croak of the smallest frog to the grunts of hippos, bird song, and watery footsteps.

The biggest joy of a mokoro safari is how you take in the surreal and stunning beauty of the Okavango Delta. While seeing animals is possible, it’s more about the peace that you’ll enjoy.

How to Schedule a Mokoro Safari

At Brave Africa, we offer mokoro safaris in Khwai and Xakanaxa (Moremi Game Reserve). It is included in the price of your trip. All you have to do is let us know that this is something you would enjoy, and we’ll schedule your trip at a suitably scenic location.

3. Boating Safari

Boating Safari Botswana

A boating safari takes you through the Okavango Delta via vast waterways.

Another type of water activity is the boating safari, which takes place on a motorized boat. This is a great African safari activity for exploring the vast waterways of the Okavango Delta and going where vehicles can’t.

There are over 17,000 square kilometers of pristine wilderness—including a labyrinth of channels and lagoons—in the Okavango Delta. And Boating safaris are a classic way to see as much as possible while enjoying game viewing and birding from the water.

How to Schedule a Boating Safari

Boating safaris rely on high water levels. If the water is too low, the boats cannot go out. If a boating safari is important to you, we recommend going out during green or shoulder season, when there’s more water around.

We offer boating safaris only in Xakanaxa (Moremi Game Reserve), and they are subject to weather and availability. Let the Brave Africa team know that you are interested in a boating safari when booking so we can schedule your trip accordingly.

4. Night Drives

Night Drive Safari

On this particular night drive, we encountered a pride of lions enjoying a kill. The red light ensured we didn’t disrupt their vision.

Most of the time, your game drives will take place between sunrise and sunset. However, when we are in Khwai, you’ll have the opportunity to go on night drives. This unique African safari activity keeps you out after the sun has set to explore the bush in total darkness.

Equipped with a spotlight, your guide will drive around the bush and point out creatures that you’ll rarely see in the light of day. There’s an opportunity to see bushbabies, porcupines, pangolins, aardvarks, springhares, honey badgers, and more.

How to Schedule a Night Drive

Your Brave Africa guide will automatically take your car out on night drives while you’re in Khwai. However, it’s always a good idea to mention that this is something you’d enjoy while on safari so that we know to plan appropriately.

5. Khwai Village Visits

Khwai Village Visit

A traditional building that you can see during a Khwai Village visit.

Visiting Khwai Village is one of the highlights of going on safari in Khwai, Botswana. It’s one of the things that makes this area so unique. The local villagers actively manage and run the Khwai Concession through the  Khwai Development Trust , having transformed their old hunting grounds into an area for eco-tourism.

You can go on a tour of Khwai Village to see first-hand how communities live, speak to villagers, and learn about their traditional way of life. You’ll learn a little about local bushman culture as well as basket weaving within the African community. And all proceeds from tourism in the Khwai Concession go directly to helping the local people and local projects!

How to Schedule a Khwai Village Visit

We need to communicate with the village in advance of your visit to ensure that the community is available for guest visits. When you schedule your safari with Brave Africa, mention that you would be interested in a Khwai Village visit and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

6. Bread Making Over the Fire

Bread Making Over Fire

Fresh bread is delicious and well worth the effort.

If one day you feel like sticking around camp for a little while, you can learn how to bake a fresh loaf of bread over the fire. Working alongside our chef, you’ll discover what it takes to transform the fire pit into a working oven. It’s a technique that’s been perfected in Africa over the years, and if we say so ourselves, it’s delicious.

How to Schedule Bread Making

If you’re feeling unwell one day or you want to plan some time off in the middle of your safari, you can ask your guide about bread making. As long as we have time to plan with our chef, and it’s not on a camp move day, we can set up a fantastic bread making experience.

7. Stargazing

Botswana stargazing

On a clear night with no moon, Botswana’s night sky is a heavenly sight.

Unsurprisingly, the night sky in Botswana is spectacular. You are out in the middle of nowhere with little to no light pollution. What that means is that you can witness a dizzying array of stars. It’s an awe-inspiring sight.

On nights with little to no moon, you can stay out late to see the Milky Way really shine! Our guides can give you a lesson on stargazing with a telescope and special laser pointer. If you’ve never seen the sky in the southern hemisphere, or even if you have, stargazing in Botswana’s bush is jaw-dropping.

How to Schedule Stargazing

You can stargaze anytime while on safari with Brave Africa. Almost every night offers amazing cosmic splendor. However, if stargazing is high up on your list, your guide will take you out on the best night possible when clouds are unlikely, and the moon is dark.

8. Junior Guides

We’ll work with your family throughout your safari vacation to make sure everyone leaves happy.

Giraffes Can’t Dance

This is a sweet story about Gerald the tall giraffe, who just doesn’t fit in with his jungle animal friends. They all can dance beautifully, and he doesn’t think he can. He finally discovers he can dance to his own tune with encouragement from a new friend.

Over in the Grasslands: On an African Savanna by Marianne Berkes, Jill Dubin

This is a fun rhyming story that teaches counting and number recognition. It can be sung to the tune of “Over in the Meadow” and introduces young children to African animals, counting, and number recognition. It also includes a map of the continent of Africa and information about the animals found in the grasslands.

Dramatic Play Adventures Preschoolers Love

Pretend play is essential for kids’ development. Develop your kids’ imaginations and invite your little explorers on a safari. Grab your safari hat, binoculars, and vest to be ready for your adventure. Look at animals through your binoculars, sit in a jeep (made out of a cardboard box), and imagine what you would see on the African Safari. Grab your favorite stuffed animals you may see on a safari to decorate your savannah.

Safari Large Motor Games for Preschoolers

  • Make a game out of these movements that encourage gross motor development by pathways.org. Have kids stand in a line and when you call out an animal, they must start to move like that animal. You can also make cards with these animals on them. Each child gets a turn to come up, pick a card and act like that animal.
  • Go on a lion hunt! Pick one child to be the lion and have them hide. Everyone else needs to grab their binoculars and sneak around the room until you see the lion. Once you spot him, run back to the safe space without being tagged. The child who gets tagged is the next lion.
  • A great way to review while getting kids up and moving is to make large paw prints out of different colored construction paper. On each paw, write a number or letter (you will want several paw prints with the same number/letters if you are playing with a group of kids). Spread your paw prints throughout the room on the floor. Call out a color, number, or letter. Each child has to find a paw print with that attribute and stand on it (or put one foot on it if they are sharing the paw.)

Fine Motor Skills Development

  • Color or paint the letter posters in our Alphabet Safari.
  • Make a banner by decorating the letters in your name and stringing them together (templates included in the Alphabet Safari)
  • This safari board game takes preschoolers on a fun adventure that helps them practice taking turns, learning facts about different animals, and developing hand-eye coordination

Safari Crafts and Activities

Safari crafts and activities are a great way to keep the kids entertained this Summer while learning lots of new things about animals and wildlife. A big thank you to our friends at Melissa & Doug for sponsoring our wild adventures while we celebrated “Safari Week” here at home! These safari crafts and activities are easy to set up, fun to do, and the perfect way to add a bit of special excitement to your Summer days.

Here are some of our favorite safari crafts and activities:

1. safari sticker-by-number.

Don’t let a little rain get in the way of your wild animal fun! These stained glass made easy and sticker-by-numbers sets from Melissa & Doug are perfect for a rainy day project while working on important fine-motor skills and number recognition.

Safari Crafts and Activities

2. Put on a Wild Animal Puppet Show

We found this pack of animal hand puppets from Melissa & Doug works very well for this! Draw up a storyboard, write a script, and craft up some scenery. Lots of imaginative storytelling fun!

3. Read Storybooks about Animals

Some of our favorites are: How the Zebra Got Its Stripes, Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, I’d Really Like to Eat a Child, and Giraffes Can’t Dance

safariweek5

4. Go on a Picnic Breakfast Adventure

Pack up your favorite cereal, some spoons, a bottle of milk, and some fresh fruit to enjoy at your favorite park in the morning before the weather gets too hot. After, go on a hike to see how many different kinds of animals you may be able to spot.

5. Visit Your Local Zoo

Take a field trip to visit your local zoo, learn more about wildlife, and have up-close encounters with amazing animals. Try to come up with one new question about each animal, and research for answers when you get back home.

6. Safari Paint with Water

I love how easy these paint with water pages from Melissa & Doug are to set up, and the kids think they are almost magical! Use a paintbrush with water to lift the paint from the palette at the top of each page. Then paint using that color on the sheet. Super easy and lots of fun!

7. Pick a Wild Animal and Research About It

Choose one wild animal you would like to learn more about, then visit your local library to find books and more information about that animal. Design a poster with the information you gather.

8. Watch a Nature Program

Some of our current favorites are Planet Earth and Hidden Kingdoms — amazing photography and videography! Plus, you are sure to learn something new about wildlife.

Safari Crafts & Activities

9. Make Your Own Trail Mix

If your pantry is full of almost-empty boxes of cereals and snacks, it may be time to make your own trail mix. Set out bowls with a variety of cereals, crackers, pretzels, and other snacks (whatever you already have on-hand) — along with a few spoons and bags to hold the snack mix. Invite the kids to make up their own mixture of trail mix. Later, bring your homemade trail mix along on your next hiking adventure.

10. Try Animal-Inspired Monoprinting!

Use mini paint rollers to spread washable paint evenly on the bottom of a baking dish, then use cotton swabs to make designs in the paint. Press a sheet of paper over top of the paint. Lift it up to reveal your unique monoprint design! My kids enjoyed this simple painting technique to make animal-inspired prints over and over again!

Safari Animal Activities For Preschoolers

Sharing is caring!

My preschool aged daughter is spending her school time at home these days (hello 2020 quarantine). We are trying to keep her enriched with fun and easy play-through-learning experiences.  Making sure she has some basic art, math, reading, writing and play time in her day is challenging for my brain but important and crucial for hers. I thought it would be easier to come up with ideas if I first came up with a  “theme” of things she wanted to learn about. That got my wheels spinning in order to find age appropriate learning activities for her. So I searched and came up with tons of safari animal activities for preschoolers.

The safari animal theme was tied into our week. We did all sorts of arts and crafts, and mixed in learning lessons.

Safari Animal Activities For Preschoolers

Safari Animal Words

We talked a lot about different animals, and how some of them live on a farm, some in the sea, some in the jungle and some of them in the safari.

Using a piece of butcher block paper I asked my daughter to come up with a few animals that she thought were safari animals. As she said an animal, I asked her to tell me what the first letter of the word started with. I also asked if she could hear any other sounds in the word. We compiled a long list and kept coming back to it throughout the week.

Safari Writing

My daughter’s teacher encouraged us to continue with an at home journal, so we did a simple safari journal prompt. If I could have any safari animal as a pet it would be….. and I asked her to draw a picture of her and the animal playing together.

We also used some of these playdough m ats and first traced the letters, then used playdough to create the letter.

Safari Small World Play

Using objects from around the house, I set up all the elements in order for my daughter to create her very own safari habitat. This was so much fun, and she kept coming back to it over and over again all week. A perfect activity for imaginative play. Full details and setup can be found here .

Safari Puppet Show

We talked about how each story has to have a beginning, middle and an end. I decided to let my daughter come up with her own puppet show and story but told her it needed to have all the elements of a story.

I found free safari animal clipart online and printed them out on a single piece of paper. I drew a circle around each animal and asked my daughter to cut them out.

animal activities for kids

We then placed the animal on top of a craft stick with a glue stick.

safari animal activities for preschoolers

I used an old table cloth and put it over the top of the table. My daughter sat underneath and had her puppet story come to life! It was about a elephant who needed to go to the doctor but slipped on his way in BTW.

Safari Arts and Crafts

Lion painting.

This project is so easy to set up. We used this easel  and I had my daughter on one side and my son on the other.

The first step was to draw the face. We did a guided and directed drawing, I told her in the middle of the paper to draw the triangle, and then the eyes etc and she followed along.

animal art activities

I LOVE painting with cotton balls it’s so easy and provides way less of a mess than traditional paint brushes. We used orange and yellow paint , and then I took two clothespins and attached cotton balls to them in order to create the circular dots around the lion’s face.  If you don’t have the supplies at home, dot paint  would also work well here.

lion preschool activity

Pro tip: whenever you do a painting project with littles add a washable plastic table cloth underneath. We also use these bibs to avoid getting paint on our clothes.

Safari Themed Preschool Craft

Moving along in the week, what’s a safari without a lion mask? This was a great opportunity for my daughter to work on her scissor cutting skills.

lion mask

  • On a piece of orange and yellow construction paper, draw 1 inch thick lines, and ask your child to cut them out (if not scissor ready have an adult cut them out).
  • Cut a hole in the middle of a paper plate
  • Using a glue stick, fasten the strips on the top of the paper plate, alternating yellow and orange stripes
  • Let the glue dry and then use the mask!

This was great for talking about patterns. She had to think each time she put a colored strip on what came next. We also went back to the mask later in the day and gave it a “hair cut.”

Math Safari Games

My daughter really enjoys playing dice games at school, so right before bed each night during safari week, we played a super fun and easy giraffe dice game.

Safari Snack

Who said you can’t play with your food? We took oranges and used edible pens and drew cute lion and tiger faces on our oranges.

safari snack

Safari Books

Since we can’t hit the bookstore or library these days, I had to get creative and find all the animal and safari books we already had. Luckily we had a few and they are a great addition to any littles library:

  • Put Me In the Zoo
  • Giraffes Can’t Dance
  • If Animals Kissed Goodnight

Safari P.E. Time

Now more than ever it is so important for my kids to stay active! They are used to a half an hour of straight running around the gym or playground at school, and being cooped up in the house means we have to get creative.

My daughter has been OBSESSED with Cosmic Kids Yoga. The narrator does an AMAZING job at telling a detailed story and then having very kid friendly yoga poses to go along with it. We did the jungle safari themed yoga and it was a huge hit.

Safari’ed Out

We had such a fun week learning about safari and jungle animals and can’t wait till our next theme, we are headed to Outer Space!

safari animal activities

This set is another nice Schleich option for several Safari animals!

safari animal activities

This Melissa and Doug puzzle is the perfect addition to Safari week! Little Miss still loves to do this one!

safari animal activities

While we personally do not have this Magna-Tiles set , it is on our wish list. Magna-Tiles are a great addition to any playroom, so I’m sure this one would be great if your toddler loves them as much as Little Miss does!

We have the shapes addition of Melissa and Doug’s shape sorting truck and it is one of Little Miss’ favorite toys, so this one would be another great option for Safari week!

animal lineup safari preschool activities

Activities involving patterns, ordering, and counting are all important for early math skills. Using safari animals to practice these skills is a great way to do so through play! Here are some ideas:

  • Line up all the animals and then ask questions like “who is in the front?” “who is behind the elephant?”
  • Divide the animals evenly between you and your toddler. Put your animals in a pattern and then have your toddler copy the pattern.
  • Put all the animals in a pattern and then remove 2 or 3 from the line. Ask your toddler to put them in the correct place to complete the pattern.
  • Ask you toddler to group all the same animals together. Then ask them who has the most and least.
  • Count the animal groups.

safari cookies

Let’s make safari cookies! Sugar cookies are so fun to make with toddlers and they are so easy, too! Get some safari cookie cutters like these or these and make some adorable safari themed cookies. (We have the first set, which Little Miss loved, but they aren’t as durable as metal ones like the second set listed.)

Making sugar cookies allows our little ones to practice fine motor skills as they roll out the dough and cut the shapes. You can also use this time to talk more about animals and what color they are, what noises they make, etc.

map skills safari preschool activities

If you are looking for a nice, quick activity, this one has got you covered.

Show your toddler how they can line up the paper clips to figure out the distance between each animal. Talk about how many paper clips it takes to get from the giraffe to the hippo, hippo to elephant, and elephant to giraffe. Ask them questions such as, “Which one is the furthest? How do you know?” They may need some help to figure this out, but this is great for introducing them to early math skills! When you are done, let them make a paper clip train, just for fun!

diy binoculars

If you are going on a Safari, you want to see some animals! Make these cute and fun binoculars to see the animals with!

Using binoculars is a great way to practice coordination and motor skills. It also makes looking for things more fun! Use these for other activities throughout Safari month, such as looking for animals, letters, and more!

letter i letter recognition activity

“I” is for Ice Cream, of course! When you are on a Safari, it can get pretty hot, so you will need to stop for a cool snack. But you better eat fast or your ice cream will melt! Learn a new technique for painting and practice recognizing the letter “I” with this super sweet activity !

j letter recognition activity

Learn the letter J with this fun and easy J is for Jeep activity! Free template makes it easy to complete!

Elephant conga line.

Children walk like an elephant on all four legs, trying to keep their balance while lifting a front leg and a back leg. We made a line of elephants and tried walking around the circle as a group.

Handa’s Surprise: Interacting with the Story

After reading the story, Handa’s Surprise , we talk about how Handa carries fruit to her friend. The children try to balance a basket of play fruit on their head the way Handa did in the story.

Wild Animals Art Activities

African drum art.

This is a good activity to go with the book, Jungle Drums , by Graeme Base. Children make drums out of drink mix cans and use pencils or dowel sticks for drumsticks. A piece of paper is wrapped and glued around the can. Children decorate the drum with animal skin patterns: Elephant: wrinkled (crumpled) paper painted gray Zebra: black stripes painted on white paper Giraffe: brown spots painted on yellow paper Cheetah: small black spots painted on tan paper Hippopotamus: painted gray-blue Rhinoceros: painted gray Hyena: black and brown spots painted on tan paper If you don’t have drink mix cans, you can make quiet drums by decorating a paper plate, and use plastic straws for drumsticks.

Class book: “i went on safari”.

Children choose an African grasslands animal to draw on the page. Each page says: “I went on safari, and what did I see? I saw a ____ looking at me!” The pages are put together to make the class book.

We talk about ways lions use their sense of smell. Cotton balls are placed around the room: a few unscented cotton balls and some with scented oil. The children pretend to be lions on the hunt by crawling around, and use their noses to find the scented ones. If you have students with perfume allergies or asthma, be sure to use a natural scented oil, such as peppermint oil.

Children love learning about animals. Most children find animals fascinating and enjoy learning about different animal habitats, diets, and characteristics.

If you’ve spent any time doing activities with young children, you know they also enjoy sorting things.

Children will learn about and become familiar with safari animals with the animal matching cards I share in this post.

Safari animals are animals that thrive in grasslands or savannas.

Use these printable memory cards as a fun learning activity to help children learn and recognize some of the animals that live on the safari.

Continue strolling below for instructions on how to assemble the game cards and to print the animal matching cards.

What You Need to Assemble Your Animal Matching Cards

  • Safari animal matching cards printed onto quality cardstock
  • Laminating pouches and a thermal laminating machine

Safari Animals Matching Cards

You only need a few items to assemble the safari-themed animal matching cards . You likely already have printer paper and scissors on hand.

Pring the cards onto quality cardstock so the animals will not show through the paper when the cards are placed face down.

It is also a good idea to laminate the cards for durability. I like to use paper clamps to easily keep the cards organized and stored away until our next use of them.

Safari Animals Matching Cards

My children used our safari animal figures along with the matching cards.

Safari Animals Matching Game Printable

To assemble the game cards, you only need to print them, cut them out, and laminate them.

Shuffle the cards and lay each card face down before having your kid(s) play the matching game.

Looking for fun safari or jungle themed party games for your next wild and crazy party? Enjoy these 12 fun animal party games that you can print. Party animal birthday themed activities and printable games for toddlers, preschoolers & younger kids.

Best Jungle Party Games For Kids

Ready to get wild with some jungle party games? Celebrate like an animal with these fun ideas that are easy to plan and pull together for a party that will cause a roar. With these adventurous jungle theme party games, your guests may cause a stampede to be a part of your tribe!

Safari jungle party games are perfect for kids of all ages and can be easily tailored to whatever level of energy and excitement you want for your party. They are the best games for toddlers and younger kids but can also be tailored toward tweens and teens with just a few animal adaptions.

What is the difference between Jungle and Safari?

The difference between a jungle and a safari is primarily the environment. A jungle would be a lush green space often humid and with water. A safari would be a landscape that is often dry similar to a desert. Often a jungle is attached to tropical regions like South America and a Safari would frequently be used for dry environments like Africa.

Due to different locations and opposite climates, jungle, and safari animals are not the same. Just to name a few, safari animals include a lion, an elephant, a cheetah, a zebra, a rhino, a giraffe, an ostrich and a leopard. Alternatively, jungle animals might include monkeys, snakes, exotic birds, tigers, jaguars, and crocodiles. Animals that might overlap both environments are crocs, cheetahs, and elephants.

When planning an animal party it’s very easy to overlap safari theme party games with jungle theme party games. Luckily both include wild animals (pun in tented – meaning both your guests and the animals).

Safari Party Games

If you’re looking for some classic party games with a wild twist, try a few rounds of musical chairs set to jungle-themed music or have an animal treasure hunt where the prizes are hidden around the yard or park. Both are easy party games and honestly toddlers would love it but teens would also love both! I could just see them fighting over that last chair.

For a more active party, set up a jungle obstacle course with if you have the space or play some fun animal charades. No matter what games you choose, make sure to have plenty of prizes on hand for the winners! It can be a small prize like a piece of candy or animal-themed party favor.

Jungle Theme Party Games

If you want to go all out with a jungle theme party, then you’ll need some games that fit the bill. A few ideas include a Jungle Scavenger Hunt, where guests have to find items on a list around the party area, or a game of Jungle Jeopardy, where teams compete to answer questions about jungle animals. Just make sure you answer in question form!

For a really fun and unique party, try setting up a photo booth with jungle-themed props and backdrops. Your guests will have a blast taking photos and you’ll have some great memories to look back on! In this theme, have everyone come in costume and vote on the best animal costume. This could be great for older kids.

Kids Jungle Party Games

When creating an animal party we often think about the cake, list of guests, decorations, venue and more. One item that comes last is the party entertainment. Let’s put the play back in the party planning with some of the best group games for kids at a party.

What games should we play at a birthday?

When you download our Jungle Party Games Set you will have a full list of animal party games perfect for a birthday party and party guests. These party animal birthday-themed games take the stress out of planning an amazing & entertaining party. With 12 games to choose from, there’s no shortage of adventure to be had.

games to play at an animal birthday party for safari or jungle

A few of our favorite animal birthday party games include:

Jungle Scavenger Hunt: This can be done both indoors and outdoors, depending on your party space. Hide jungle animals around the party area for guests to find. You can use stuffed animals, plastic toy animals, or even printouts of jungle animals. Give each guest a list of animals to find and see who can find them all first!

Peel a Banana Challenge : Ready to play an a-peeling game? This funny game has players racing against the clock to see how many bananas they can peel. The only trick? You can’t use your hands! The object of the game is the game is to get the most!

Save the Baby Obstacle Course: Players will navigate through the “jungle”, avoiding obstacles and trying to reunite the baby animal to their animal mom as fast as they can. But beware! If you drop the baby, you’ll have to go back to the start. Tag the next person and continue the fun!

Enjoy jungle themed birthday party games like Monkey See Monkey Do, Banana Peel Challenge, Animal Eating Contest and Catch a Tiger Tail are perfect for kids of all ages and will have them laughing and playing all party long!

Get the party started with animal party games that are a roaring good time!  Luckily it’s possible to have an amazingly great time at a party with out blowing the budget. Explanations.

  • Keto: net carbs 1g If you are following a ketogenic diet (keto), you need to restrict your daily carbohydrate intake so that your body enters ketosis. For most people, this means less than 50 net carbs per day. Net carbs are calculated by subtracting fiber from total carbs. Example: A product with 26 grams of total carbohydrates and 9 grams of fiber will have 17 grams net carbs. Math equation: 26 - 9 = 17 IMPORTANT: Net carbs are per serving. Make sure you know your serving size or else you may go over your planned intake and exit ketosis.
  • For dieters: FoodPoints value is 4 * FoodPoints are calculated by Fooducate based on fats, carbs, fiber, and protein. They are not an endorsement or approval of the product or its manufacturer. The fewer points - the better.
  • How to choose a salad dressing What’s a salad without a dressing? It’s like Bert without Ernie, sesame without the chicken, a bun without the burger. You get it, a salad is not a salad without the good stuff drizzled on top. Food manufacturers have realized this long ago, and today, entire supermarket aisles are dedicated to salad dressings and toppings. More info
  • Natural flavors added. Learn why Companies add flavorings to make products taste better. They are created in a lab and the formulations are guarded as trade secrets. Flavorings can compensate for flavor loss during processing, substitute for ingredients, lower production costs and increase shelf stability. Natural flavorings are more expensive to source than artificial flavors, but tend to be better received by consumers. People sensitive to MSG, vegans, vegetarians and those with allergies should pay special attention to the phrase "natural flavorings" since glutamates, animal products or allergens may be the source of natural flavors. You can always contact the manufacturer for more information.
  • Learn about Xanthan Gum, found here Xanthan gum is an emulsifier. It helps ingredients blend more effectively and stay blended while waiting on a shelf. For example – water and oil mixtures, as well as bits of spice in a salad dressing. Xanthan Gum is made by fermenting corn sugar with a bacteria, Xanthomonas campestris. It’s the same bacteria that creates black spots on broccoli and cauliflower. The result is a slimy goo that is then dried up and ground into a fine white powder. More info

Reviving classic Russian cuisine

Oct 19 2018.

Roads & Kingdoms talks to Russian chef Vladimir Mukhin of Moscow’s super-restaurant, White Rabbit.

Still in his mid-30’s, Vladimir Mukhin is already one of Russia’s best known chefs and the leading culinary light of the White Rabbit Group, which has 16 restaurants around the country. The most well-known of these, Moscow’s  White Rabbit , was named one of the 50 best restaurants in the world last year. Roads & Kingdoms’ Nathan Thornburgh talked to Mukhin in Moscow about being a fifth-generation chef, reviving classic Russian cuisine, and finding good product in the age of embargoes.

Nathan Thornburgh: Tell me about White Rabbit, what is the food? What are you trying to accomplish there?

Vladimir Mukhin: The White Rabbit is a big restaurant. We’re trying to revive Russian cuisine. I’m a fifth-generation chef, so I’m passionate about the food we create. During the Soviet Union period, we killed Russian food. Classic Russian recipes became too simplified. For example, usually you drink tea, but if you want to be, just to be creative, want to make the tea with milk, you can’t. It would be like stealing milk from the government. People went to jail.

When I was growing up, I remember my grandfather coming to the kitchen and crying because he couldn’t experiment with his food.

Thornburgh: Wow. I remember this famous photo session with Che Guevara which came up with some of his best pictures, maybe two incredible iconic portraits came from an entire roll of film, and the photographer went to him and showed him this roll of film and Che said, What the hell are you doing? You wasted all of these images. You took 30 pictures to get one? That’s the government’s film. It’s a similar mentality.   So you’re telling the story of a kind of cuisine that was lost on the Soviet history and now you’re playing with this idea of finding it again. What does your process look like? Do you get as many grandmothers as you can round up and just kind of shake recipes out of them? How were you doing this?

Mukhin: I just try to work with as many local farmers and producers as I can, so we can use as many Russian ingredients as we can.

Thornburgh: So this is a close relationship.

Mukhin: Yes. I traveled throughout Russia—not just the big cities, but also the villages to talk with older people.

Thornburgh: You know I think people don’t understand the vastness of Russia, and how big it’s collection of cultures and languages and cuisines is. What parts of the country influences your food?

Mukhin: I’m inspired by the whole country. It’s a big territory, and sometimes it feels like it’s too big. I try and use different techniques and ingredients from all over the country, which I think makes my menus distinct.

We have an a la carte menu with about 50 dishes of classical Russian food. Everything looks modern because I’m a young chef. But if you close your eyes and try these dishes, you’ll taste 100% classic Russian flavors.

I want to highlight all aspects of Russian cuisine. Before the Olympic Games in Sochi, we opened a restaurant there, not just to make money, but to expose people visiting for the Olympics to Russian food. That’s why we opened The Red Fox restaurant. It’s all about Russian ingredients.

Thornburgh: Sochi, at least when I’ve been there, is like a Miami Beach. It’s like a place to get pizza and sushi, and go to the nightclubs.

Mukhin: You been?

Thornburgh: Yeah.

Mukhin: It’s crazy.

Thornburgh: It’s a little crazy, but it’s interesting to bring in Red Fox and sort of say okay, because people are coming out, let’s bring Russia to Sochi.

Mukhin: It was incredible. We had thousands of visitors at the restaurant.

Thornburgh: So you really looked internally for inspiration. Did working outside of Russia motivate you to focus on Russian cuisine?

Mukhin: Yes. I spent time working in Avignon, France. I worked with Christian Etienne, and he would make a special Russian meal once a year.  It was crazy.

culinary tours dressing

Thornburgh: How was the food?

Mukhin: It was shit. I told him that I would cook real Russian food for him, and I did. I cooked borscht, blinis, and other classics. He liked it and said that once a year we should use my recipes, but with his influence. I agreed, and we went on to make amazing food. Eventually, I wanted to come back to my motherland. So I left and I started working on making White Rabbit a reality.

Thornburgh: When people go to White Rabbit, what are they going to find?

Mukhin: Someone once told me that there is a new Russian cuisine and an old Russian cuisine. I think Russian cuisine is going through an evolution. So I hope people will come and see evolution at White Rabbit.

Thornburgh: Great. Always good to end on an invite. Thank you.

Mukhin: Thank you so much.

72 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Moscow

fun things to do in Moscow

Sure, Moscow is the Russian political capital and the nation’s most populous city, but describing it as such couldn’t be any further from the truth. More accurately, Moscow is a city of contrasts.

It exudes history — its Kremlin dates back centuries, nodding to royalty and leadership old and now, while the famed Red Square, the poster child of the city, blends striking color with ancient tradition and religion.

On the other hand, it’s a city of modern pop culture and towering skyscrapers; a place where you’ll come across new-age museums, arts centers, manmade parks, and an efficient transportation system that’s one of the most beautiful in Europe.

It’s a city of longstanding culture — the Bolshoi Theater is an international symbol for excellence in classical dance, while Russia’s National Ballet Company remains renowned worldwide — as well as upbeat nightlife, with some of the world’s most celebrated rooftop bars and nightclubs.

While it’s a city filled with opposites, there remains no shortage of things to do in Moscow for all types of travelers — from those who want cultural immersion to those looking for an epic night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of suggestions!

The Moscow Kremlin

If there’s any particular district begging to be the first place you visit on your trip, it’s the Kremlin.

Built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible, the UNESCO-listed area has since become the heart of Russia’s capital city, where you’ll find several churches, palaces, and other noteworthy buildings.

We’ll dive into each of its main attractions in a second, but regardless of what you visit, try to make it to the Kremlin in time for sunset — because seeing its golden domes glinting in the late-afternoon light makes for one spectacular tourist photo!

1 – Admire the abundance of Kremlin towers | the Kremlin

Kremlin towers, Moscow

As your eyes dart down the towering red-brick Kremlin wall, the first thing you’ll notice is its large towers of all different styles and sizes.

With a whopping 20 separate minarets towering above the historic area, each with its own name, colors, features and history, a guided tour to learn each of their fascinating stories is a must.

To give you a little taste, the Konstantin-Yeleninskaya Tower once housed a torture chamber. Saviour’s Tower at the main entrance boasts a famous chiming clock, the Secret Tower houses a secret escape tunnel, and the Trinity Tower is the tallest of them all.

2 – Visit the enormous Grand Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

A remarkable attraction in terms of both beauty and history, the Grand Kremlin Palace is an ornate rococo-style building that was commissioned during the reign of Nicholas I, and today acts as the official residence of none other than the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Perched atop Borovitsky Hill, its 125-meter-long facade is unmissable, making for impressive photos.

Take note: guided tours are few and far between, so you’ll have to book a few weeks in advance if you want to check out the decorated inner sanctum.

3 – People-watch in Cathedral Square | the Kremlin

Cathedral Square, Moscow

One of the most popular areas in all of Moscow (sometimes called Sobornaya Square), with multiple massive churches at its heart, Cathedral Square is flanked by several historic buildings and is never shy of a tourist crowd.

The three main churches — each spectacular works of architecture in their own right — are the Cathedral of the Assumption (the oldest and the biggest of all Kremlin churches), the 16th-century Cathedral of the Archangel Michael (known for its beautiful Corinthian gables and turrets), and the golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (which connects to the Grand Kremlin Palace’s main building).

Throw in the 60-meter-high Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the lesser-known Church of the Twelve Apostles , the Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (underrated yet famous for its marvelous stained-glass windows), and the medieval residence-turned-museum that is The Patriarch’s Palace, and you can see why this square is regularly number one on any visitor’s list of things to do in Moscow.

4 – See a show at the State Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

State Kremlin Palace, Moscow

Just like the Grand Kremlin Palace , this theater and prestigious concert hall — with its grandiose facade and multiple sculptures — is another ornate building that’s worth admiring.

A popular place to hold conferences, the State Kremlin Palace was originally built as part of a larger complex for Communist Party meetings, but today hosts some of the biggest events in Moscow — we’re talkin’ sold-old ballet performances, world-famous concerts, opera shows, and festivals.

Check the website to see what’s on the calendar for your visit!

5 – See centuries worth of national treasures at the Armoury Chamber | the Kremlin

Armoury Chamber, Moscow

For anyone with an interest in historical weaponry and armor, this museum — which dates back to the early 1500s when it was created as the royal armory — is a must-see.

The Armoury Chamber (as well as the Diamond Fund Exhibition) is home to some of the most valuable objects that were originally owned by Russian monarchs — from jeweled heirlooms and intricate boxes to ornately decorated pistols and swords — many of which are centuries old.

Within the armoury chamber, you’ll also find the Russian historical regalia, a collection of artifacts that belonged to Russian tsars and emperors between the 13th and 20th centuries, highlighted by the Ivory Throne and the Monomakh’s Cap.

6 – Step inside the Palace of the Facets | the Kremlin

Palace of the Facets, Moscow

The Palace of the Facets is one of the most underrated buildings in all of Moscow, largely because it’s not as widely promoted or photographed even though its exterior adorns some postcards.

From the outside, it blends in with the crowd. But step inside and you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder — its frescoes, golden columns and enormous rooms are a sight to behold

The Palace of the Facets is not only a piece of art (literally, with painted walls), dating back over 500 years, but also acted as the dining hall for the Tsars.

7 – Feel small next to the Tsar Bell | the Kremlin

Tsar Bell, Moscow

Making Philadelphia’s famous Liberty Bell look diminutive in size, this monument , which never actually functioned as a bell due to its immense size (at 205 tons and standing 20.1 feet high!), has found fame in recent years for being the heaviest attraction inside The Kremlin.

With the bronze landmark’s claim to fame of being the biggest bell in the world, it presents as a great, quick photo op when roaming through the Kremlin.

8 – Check out the Senate Palace | the Kremlin

Senate Palace, Moscow

Another architectural masterpiece that’s tucked away within the Kremlin, this palace is famous for being one of Moscow’s most beautiful buildings — its yellow façade curves around to face inward and truly engulf anyone who stands near it.

Built back in the late 1700s, today it houses the Russian presidential administration and, unfortunately for us, is off limits to the general public.

Still, admiring it from outside, with the nearby Tsar Cannon, is certainly good enough.

9 – Grab a photo in front of the Tsar Cannon | the Kremlin

Tsar Cannon, Moscow

One of Moscow’s most iconic symbols, Tsar Cannon (or Royal Cannon) is a cannon that was manufactured in 1586 and resides — yep, you guessed it — within The Kremlin.

Following the theme of the enormous Tsar Bell, it weighs a whopping 39 tons — making it one of the world’s largest cannons even though it has never been shot.

And while its size may be impressive on its own, what makes this cannon so special is that it’s adorned with intricate carvings, ornaments, inscriptions, and a figure of a horse-riding Tsar Feodor the Bellringer.

10 – Join a tour of the Terem Palace | the Kremlin

Terem Palace, Moscow

A stunning, fairytale-like palace that’s steeped in history and detail, the five-story Terem Palace is one of the most underrated attractions within The Kremlin. However, as part of the official residence of the Russian President, much of it is off-limits to snap-happy tourists.

That said, there’s still plenty to be seen in the accessible areas by joining a group tour: a beautiful white-stone carved staircase; curved, decorated, and painted ceilings; and an enchanting low-vaulted Antechamber with lancet windows.

The Red Square

As we move away from the Kremlin, our next stop is the most photographed, picturesque public area in the country.

Flanked by gorgeous, colorful towers and buildings, the Red Square is the most famous square in all of Russia — and one that’s steeped in history, patriotism, and communist symbolism.

Home to some of Moscow’s greatest landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral (featuring its iconic onion domes), Lenin Mausoleum, GUM department store (an architectural masterpiece that is the most famous shopping mall in Russia), The State History Museum, and more, it’s not just a sight to see in Moscow but also one that has been seen by hundreds of millions from around the world.

11 – Make your way inside St. Basil’s Cathedral | Red Square

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow

Built back in the early 1500s, this quirky-looking, 65-meter-tall Orthodox church is so unique and detailed that it’s earned its place as one of 16 UNESCO cultural sites in Russia — and, thanks to many Hollywood productions like Bond: Skyfall (2012), has only continued to increase in fame.

Its exterior boasts multi-colored domes crowned with golden onion top spires. Meanwhile, inside, you’ll find nine small, separate chapels, and plenty of decorated walls and windows — all best viewed as part of a walking tour of Red Square.

12 – Visit the State Historical Museum | Red Square

State Historical Museum, Moscow

One of seven museums that can be found around the expansive Red Square, the State Historical Museum is one of Moscow’s most revered.

Housed in a neoclassical building (the same as GUM), it features more than 4 million items relating to Russian history — making it so vast and incredible that you’ll need at least two hours inside to see just a fraction.

While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Marshal Georgy Zhukov Monument, a towering horse-riding statue of arguably the most famous and heroic Soviet military commander of WWII, which can be found in front of the museum.

13 – Shop till you drop at GUM | Red Square

GUM department store, Moscow

The official state department store of Russia, having opened in 1893 and become one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions for shopaholics over the years, is known for its gorgeous architecture that looks more like a palace than anything else.

Entering through its massive golden doors, you’ll be surprised to find an extensive shopping center with more than 100 luxury and world-renowned brands of clothing and accessories for men, women, and youngsters.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, stop into the Gastronom №1 for a bite to eat or take a stroll through its corridors to appreciate the building’s history and beauty.

14 – Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum | Red Square

Lenin's Mausoleum, Moscow

Another iconic Red Square attraction is Lenin’s Mausoleum, a small yet foreboding building that houses the embalmed corpse of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin (who led Russia through the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917).

Opened in 1930 after his death and standing at more than 12 meters tall, it presents as both a unique and macabre site — and, considering the life-like nature of the body, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

Note: Entrance is free of charge, but expect to be searched by security before being allowed in.

15 – Ride the Moscow Metro, enjoying the beautiful stations along the way

Moscow Metro, Russia

As we leave the Red Square, the next cab off the rank is Moscow’s unbelievable artistic Metro network (rivaled only in beauty by that of Stockholm). Constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, its stations were built by hand with a wide range of artistic themes — from socialist realist to Slavic pagan.

Tips: The best way to experience them is as part of a Moscow Metro tour, which can be booked online. However, if you prefer exploring solo, then make sure to visit the Mayakovskaya Metro Station which is known for its seemingly endless archways.

You may also check out Dostoyevskaya, named after a famous writer with murals depicting his stories. The Ploshchad Revolutsii Metro Station is another option where a handful of Socialist statues provide a wonderful contrast to the red marble arches.

A world-renowned performance complex on the picturesque Kosmodamianskaya Embankment, this state-of-the-art venue is best known for hosting Vladimir Spivakov’s Virtuosi of Moscow Chamber Orchestra. It showcases everything from classical concerts to jazz, folk music and more!

The venue’s three magnificent concert halls welcome an array of local and international performers. Check the website to see who’s taking center stage during your visit!

53 – Drift through fresh powder on a snowmobile!

snowmobiling in Moscow

While it’s not always winter (though if you want to make the most of your snowy trip, come between December and March), as soon as that first snowfall hits, it’s time for snowmobile tours. Make for a fantastic way to explore the out-of-the-way locations and magical forests beyond Moscow’s city limits.

Even if you’ve never ridden a ski-doo or snowmobile before, the friendly expert instructors will be with you every step of the way, with safety and enjoyment always priorities.

54 – Crank your head skywards in Moscow City

Moscow International Business Center, Moscow

A stark contrast to the ancient and colorful onion domes in the Red Square, Moscow City’s skyscape (aka the Moscow International Business Center ) is full of towering, modern glass-heavy (even twisting) skyscrapers. Many of which are vying at the top of the list of Europe’s tallest buildings.

At 374 meters tall and with 95 floors — and a wonderful restaurant on its 60th floor — the Moscow Federation Tower is a popular choice for tourists. Meanwhile, the 85th and 86th floor of the OKO Towers play host to a Russian restaurant and skating rink respectively.

Be sure to walk through the modern Bagration Bridge and, for the shopaholics, check out the stores and IMAX theater inside AFIMALL City.

55 – Check out Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye Park, Moscow

Within arm’s reach of the famed Red Square, the peaceful slice of greenery that is Zaryadye Park is a breath of beautiful and natural air amidst the concrete jungle. It’s the first new city park to be opened in Moscow for more than half a century.

At various points around the 10-hectare park, you’ll find a few restaurant pavilions, a media center, a museum and a botanical collection housing over a million plants. It also houses the two-stage Zaryadye Concert Hall where thousands of passersby take a seat on the steps every day.

While you’re there, don’t miss the Chambers of the Romanov Boyars, an unusual museum above the northern side of the park.

56 – Stroll around the cozy Hermitage Garden

Hermitage Garden, Moscow

Small yet incredibly charming and found conveniently smack-bang in the middle of the city, the Hermitage Garden is a perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day of learning about Russia’s vast history.

Surrounded by the Sfera Theatre and The Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow , this lovely, leafy garden can be both a relaxing oasis or the prelude to an entertaining evening out.

57 – Treat yourself to a ballet show at the Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow

With a reputation that precedes it, the impressive and world-famous Bolshoi Theatre is a must for any theater lover. Its rich history is making it one of the most iconic theaters in Europe.

While there are several performances to choose from throughout the year — from ballet to opera, classic dramas and even acrobatic shows — you can also get your own private backstage tour.

58 – Get artsy, then party at ArtPlay

ArtPlay, Moscow

This old tea factory turned cultural hub of Moscow’s creative arts is heaven on earth for rotating exhibitions by local artists.

Depending on what piques your interest, you can join in on everything from live music to dance classes, art studio workshops, flea markets and film screenings here. However, after the sun goes down, its alter-ego comes out to play.

So, if you’re feeling peckish, stop into the Domozhilov restaurant nearby for a shashlik. Then wash it down at the English pub with a beer before partying it up at Rodnya, a pumping techno club.

59 – Head to the PANORAMA360 Observation Deck

PANORAMA360 Observation Deck, Moscow

A surefire hit for the social media feed, the observation deck at the top of Moscow’s Federation Tower skyscraper — PANORAMA360 — is a must-see selfie stop for its killer views and … ice cream factory.

From the 89th floor, you can soak in the wonder of Moscow old and new from above. It has floor-to-ceiling windows providing 360-degree vistas, a rotating restaurant and mini-cinema to boot.

60 – Throw down a picnic blanket in Sokolniki Park

Sokolniki Park, Moscow

One of the largest green spaces in Moscow, Sokolniki Park is a very popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Spread across the northeastern Sokolniki District, it’s the perfect distance from the city’s main haunts where the crowds remain small but the accessibility stays high.

With its many activities — from sports to live music to festivals — not much beats this park when it comes to outdoor fun!

61 – Catch a traditional Russian dance show

Russian dance shows in Moscow

To get a true sense of the rich and diverse culture in Moscow, you can’t go past one of its many folk dance shows.

While there are several to choose from, “Kostroma” and “The Golden Ring” are two crowd favorite choices. Each is thoroughly unique with traditional music and costumes sure to make for a once-in-a-lifetime night of entertainment.

Of course, due to high popularity, be sure to book in advance.

62 – Book a table at the White Rabbit restaurant bar

White Rabbit restaurant bar, Moscow

Perched above the historical center of Moscow on the 16th floor of the Smolensky Passage building, this lavish restaurant is a must-visit for any foodie-obsessed traveler. Why? Because it continually ranks as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world.

The drool-worthy menu made by fifth-generation chef Vladimir Mukhin consists of creative, beautiful plated meals. The coveted eaterie also boasts 360-degree panoramic views of the city and a fine collection of wines and cocktails.

63 – Have dinner inside the Vysoko-Petrovskiy Monastery

Vysoko-Petrovskiy Monastery, Moscow

Whether you’re an architecture or history buff, while visiting Moscow, it would be a shame to miss out on the rare chance to eat in an actual monastery.

This one is particularly special as it dates back some 700 years. Not only will you get to dig into an authentic Russian menu, but learn about the history of the building and (depending on your booking package) get a guided tour too.

64 – Pass by the ‘Children Are the Victims of Adult Vices’ sculpture

Children Are the Victims of Adult Vices sculpture, Moscow

This free public art installation in Bolotnaya square was created by Mihail Chemaikin in 2001. A somewhat controversial landmark, it depicts how children are influenced by vices — alcohol, theft, ignorance, violence, addiction, poverty and war, to name a few.

The sculpture’s uniqueness and thought-provoking nature makes it an essential stop on any day of wandering around.

65 – Get wild on a pub crawl!

pub crawls in Moscow

You’re on vacation, so it’s time to let your hair down, mingle with some fellow thirsty travelers and party it up Moscow-style!

High-energy pub crawls are a great way to get acquainted with new friends while seeing Moscow’s unique nightlife scene first-hand. Let the locals lead you to hidden gems, tourist hot spots and quirky dive bars.

If you don’t feel like walking, why not join a Soviet minivan crawl instead (where you can drink Soviet champagne onboard!)?

66 – Roll up for the Nikulin Circus!

Nikulin Circus, Moscow

If you haven’t had the chance to see a live circus before — and especially if you’re traveling with kids — why not head over to the Nikulin Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard?

It blends traditional Russian acrobatics with modern-day technology, animals, and the classic circular circus stage. This beloved local entertainment is also considered one of the most enjoyable things to do in Moscow!

67 – Get romantic on a Moskva River dinner cruise

dinner cruises in Moscow

What better way to take in the city’s skyline than from a luxury yacht as you enjoy entertainment, fine dining, and (strong) specialty drinks?

Whether you’re looking for something large that can accommodate groups of friends or something smaller with a bit more VIP style, there are several dinner cruises available to suit any taste and budget.

68 – Explore the wonderful Izmailovo District

Izmailovo District, Moscow

One of the city’s best-kept secrets, Izmailovo ‘s focal point is its Kremlin, a colorful wooden complex. Built in 2007, it has had unique museums and flea markets pop up nearby in the years since.

Throughout the area, you’ll uncover museums dedicated to vodka, break and Russian folk art. The district’s charming open-air flea market has all kinds of crafts and souvenirs are haggled on the daily.

Don’t miss Izmailovo Park , which is an enormous 300-hectare space that plays host to souvenir vendors, forest walking paths and even an ice rink in winter.

With so much to see in the district, savvy travelers typically opt for a guided tour.

  • Izmailovo tours

69 – Sip on a cocktail at the award-winning City Space Bar and Lounge

City Space Bar and Lounge, Moscow

Self-dubbed as one of the world’s top 10 bars, with accolades like Luxury Travel Guide’s Bar of the Year 2018, this iconic and luxurious watering hole doesn’t need much of an introduction.

Perched sky-high on the 34th floor of Swissotel Krasnye Holmy, the circular lounge bar slings signature cocktails and dishes up truly stunning views of the city.

Hot tip: While there’s never a poor time to visit, aim to arrive an hour or so before sunset, that’s when the city will truly sparkle below.

70 – Pamper yourself at the Sanduny Baths

Sanduny Baths, Moscow

If you’re looking for something to ease that throbbing headache after a night of pub crawling, why not try the famous Sanduny Baths , a quintessentially Russian experience?

Famed as one of the world’s most beautiful public bathhouses, Sanduny’s steam rooms and pools are said to be some of the best in Moscow. But for something totally unique, you can’t go past the birch twigs massage (read: beating).

71 – Spruce up your social media feed at some Insta-worthy restaurants

insta-worthy restaurants in Moscow

While a good meal is always part of the restaurant experience, getting a good pic for Instagram is half the fun!

Luckily, there are tons of excellent eateries that combine great food with gorgeous aesthetics.

Big Wine Freaks has a fantastic drink selection (naturally), and its dark, classy rooms full of elegant light fixtures and plush furniture bring to mind a spy’s hideout.

Meanwhile, Sempre adopts more of a naturalistic approach, surrounding diners with ferns and greenery.

And at Black Market Moscow , you can choose between indoor and outdoor spaces, each featuring their own unique designs and dining experiences.

Take a bite and snap some pics!

72 – Unleash your inner party animal at the Night clubs

nightlife in Moscow

When the sun goes down, you’ll get to see a whole new side of Moscow: its amazing nightlife!

Head to Propaganda for a bite or a beverage, then dance to some quality club tunes.

Or get a little wild at Chesterfield , where you can pay a flat fee and drink as much as you want – the perfect recipe for fun!

And at Rock’N’ Roll , there’s a new form of excitement every day, from DJ sets to live bands, all playing a lively mix of rock music from across the decades.

With all this excitement, you won’t want to book anything early the next day!

How to get to Moscow?

Unless you’re feeling up to the challenge of a long train journey, you’ll most likely be flying into Moscow.

Luckily, it has three international airports to choose from: Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll be able to easily reach the city via the Aeroexpress train.

Where to stay in Moscow?

Golden Ring Hotel  will make you feel like you’re on top of the world, whether you’re getting pampered at the beauty salon or enjoying a meal in the rooftop restaurants.

Or check in to Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel & Business Center , which boasts everything from riverside views and a gym to nearby shopping areas and relaxing Turkish baths.

At AZIMUT Hotel Olympic Moscow , the massages, international cuisine, sauna, and swimming pool will keep you happily occupied in between excursions.

And at sister property AZIMUT Hotel Smolenskaya Moscow , you can savor a nice meal or admire the scenery from the lounge, or stroll over to Gorky Park or roam along Stary Arbat Street.

Meanwhile, Oblaka Hotel blends simple charm and a convenient location, with charming red brick exteriors and easy access to historic sites and a metro station.

These excursions aren’t just a way to save money while still learning a lot; they also offer a wonderful opportunity to gain local perspectives, courtesy of your guides.

But despite the name, they do accept tips for a job well done, so bring a bit of money with you!

Where to go next?

If you’re short on time but still want to see the best of Moscow, try some multi-day tours ; they’ll provide all of the coolest sights and experiences in an efficient format.

After that, it’s time to start exploring further afield!

Though it’s a bit of a trek, St. Petersburg is well worth the journey!

With its famously decadent buildings to its lively arts scene, this is the perfect place to soak up some culture; but there are also some more offbeat options, like folk shows, vodka tastings, and even an amusement park!

And from the jaw-dropping designs of the metro stations (yes, you read that correctly) to the glimmer of Faberge eggs, it showcases beauty at every turn.
