iPad Pro 10.5-inch, Wi-Fi

No, the OP is talking about videos on web pages in Safari. There used to be an option in Safari settings to “Disable Fullscreen API” so that websites would use the native iOS video player instead of any custom video players. That option has been finally removed in iOS 13. Now videos on websites play using custom video players which means that they are incredibly buggy, hard to navigate, and constantly have ads and pop ups. Custom video players cause a pretty terrible video experience and it is a huge negative regression for Apple to force users to use custom video players when the native iOS player was so much better.

I don’t have a fix for this but I hope someone does.

Using safari in ios 13 on my ipad no longer allows me to use the native video player. This caused issues when streaming over to my apple tv via screen mirroring. I could no longer expand to full screen and watch on my whole tv screen. Tv screen would try to match the tablet aspect ratio causing smaller picture and lots of void on the edges.

solution: stream via iPhone or use Google Chrome for ipad. Both still use the native video player while in full screen and allow full screen while mirroring via apple tv.

This doesn’t help as most sites have their own way of how its displayed for this device/resolution, which for the most part over rides whatever safari’s default/requested is. PLEASE someone help us get back to a position where we could turn off the use the full screen API option, or somehow get the same result...

Thank you so much for being the only person to provide a real solution to this major disappointment!! Feels like apple’s support consists of people like “....errrrr umm cycle the power maybe..., if not you gotta take your device to the store and do a factory reset”.....like they hire people off the street in 3rd world countries and pay them in peanuts... It’s been a over 2 MONTHS guys!! NO SOLUTIONS??!

Spotify's web player works with Safari again

After a nearly three-year hiatus the web player is back..

In 2017, Spotify’s Safari web player vanished without any explanation. Users were forced to use another browser or the native Mac app. Now, just as mysteriously, Spotify has added Safari back to its list of approved browsers . After almost three years, loyal Safari users can finally listen to Spotify in the browser once again.

It’s always been a little strange that Spotify didn’t work in Safari. Even Google’s music service works fine with the browser. Of course, the public beta of Apple Music’s web player is also compatible.

Spotify made the change quietly and without any announcement. It was spotted by a Reddit user and reported by 9to5Mac . If the web player doesn’t automatically open, you can try Spotify’s recommended tips, like updating the browser or opening the web player in a private window.

As the report notes, previously users were met with a 'This browser doesn't support Spotify Web Player' when trying to visit the page on Safari. The two haven't worked together since September 2017 without explanation.

Spotify Web Player now works with Safari, as well as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. How to Use Spotify Web Player with New Safari on Mac

safari web player

Spotify has grown to become one of the largest music streaming platforms with over 365 million monthly active users including 165 million paying subscribers. As a popular music streaming service with over 70 million tracks accessible on phones, tablets, and computers, Spotify has undeniably become the favorite platform for music lovers around the world.

For Mac users, there are two options to enjoy their favorite tracks on Spotify. They can either download the Spotify Mac App or Spotify web player. Back in 2017, Spotify removed web player support for Apple’s Safari browser without any clear explanation. It was believed that the withdrawal of support was due to Widevine media optimizer plugin that Spotify used for web streaming that Apple opposed due to security issues. Hence, when users tried to use the web player on the Safari browser, they received the message, "This browser doesn't support Spotify Web Player. Switch browsers or download Spotify for your desktop."

For two and a half years, there has been no support for the Spotify web player on the Safari browser. However, with the launch of the Safari 15 browser, Spotify has updated its list of supported web browsers to include the Safari browser alongside other browsers including Chrome and Firefox.

As Spotify has silently restored support for the web player on the new Safari browser, music lovers are excited to try it out and resume enjoying their playlists directly from the web player. How-To Geek

How to listen to spotify with just your web browser.

Spotify is one of our favorite music streaming services and one thing you might not know is that to use it, you don't need to download an app: you can use it straight from your web browser.

Spotify's Web Player works in Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. The only notable absence is Safari. To use it in one of the other browsers, head to play.Spotify.com and sign in. If you don't already have a Spotify account, you can sign up for free; the free plan has never been better .

Related: Spotify Free vs. Premium: Is it Worth Upgrading?

If you use the web player while on the free plan, you'll have the full Spotify free experience. You'll just hear a few minutes of ads every hour so that Spotify can pay the artists. We, however, do think it's worth paying for Spotify if you use it a lot.

The Spotify Web Player is laid out almost identically to the desktop app. You can create playlists (and access those you set up in your app), browse featured recommendations, search for specific artists and songs, and even switch over to the Radio mode. You also have access to everything in the Spotify catalog that you'd have in the app.

Select what you want to listen to, click the Play button, and you're good to go.

While the Spotify Web Player is certainly convenient, it does come with a couple of downsides.

  • Audio files are streamed at a lower bitrate through the Web Player than the desktop app. Free subscribers get 128kbps from the Web Player but 160kbps from the desktop app. Premium subscribers get 256kbps from the Web Player but up to 320kbps from the desktop app.
  • The media playback controls on your computer or headphones won't work with the web player.
  • If you're a Premium subscriber, you can't download tracks for offline listening or access Spotify while you're offline. You need the app for that

If you are using your own computer, it's probably a good idea to download the desktop app. However, if you're borrowing a computer and want to listen to some tunes---or if you use a Chromebook---then the Spotify Web Player is awesome; it's a much better way to listen to music than YouTube.

Spotify Problems On Safari? 3 Known Issues (Solved)

' src=

Web applications are a brilliant convenience, they don’t need installation or slow down your system, and a great example of this is the Spotify web player.

The Spotify web player should be one of the most loved websites in the world as it lets you access the Spotify musical universe directly through your web browser.

As amazing as it is, it, unfortunately, is also flawed, with many users reporting issues with it not working correctly on Safari.

In this article, we explore Spotify problems on Safari and look to provide troubleshooting tips to resolve them.

Table of Contents

The Spotify Tab is not Responding

Many users have complained about trying to open Spotify on their Safari browser, and it doesn’t respond.

We have several tips for you to try should you find that Spotify keeps closing itself or blacking out.

Open The Web Player in Incognito Mode

It is possible that a feature or an extension on Safari may be causing interference with the Spotify web player .

To rule this out, you should open the web player in a private window.

You might be wondering, how will this help?

A private browser window will not be encumbered with browser extensions or cached information, and changes in cookies and website data are not saved, which can interfere with how a normal browser loads.

Follow the steps below to open the Spotify web player in a private window:

  • Launch the Safari app on your device.
  • Click on ‘File’ then ‘New Private Window’

You will know that you’re in incognito mode when the search field is dark with white text.

If Spotify opens and functions without any issues, then there could be browser extensions that are causing the problem and if that’s the case, then you’d need to disable browser extensions.

Turn Off Browser Extensions

Safari extensions extend Safari’s functionality, allowing you to browse the web the way you want.

Extensions can display useful information about a webpage, show news headlines, assist you in using your favorite services, change the appearance of web pages, and much more.

Extensions are an excellent way to customize your browsing experience.

As great as these extensions are, they can be a catalyst for online streaming playback issues.

The steps below will guide you to turn off browser extensions on Safari:

  • Open Safari on your device.
  • Click on ‘Settings’ (or Preferences), then tap on ‘Extensions’
  • Uncheck the boxes next to the extensions to turn them off.
  • If you wish to uninstall an extension, tap on the ‘Uninstall’ button.

If you’ve turned off the extension and you still experience the same problem, the issue could be your device’s firewall.

Disable Your Device’s Firewall

Due to security concerns, the firewall settings on your Mac may prevent Spotify from operating as intended.

The programs used by Spotify must be let through your firewall.

Use the steps below to disable the firewall:

  • Open the Apple Menu and select ‘System Preferences’
  • Tap on ‘Security & Privacy’
  • Click on the padlock to unlock it, you will need to enter your password to make changes.
  • Select the ‘Firewall’ settings.
  • Click the ‘Add’ button, choose the Spotify app from the pop-up menu that appears, click ‘Add,’ and then click ‘OK’ to allow the Spotify app and service to connect.
  • Choose Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Files and Folders, then check to see if Spotify is listed and enabled in the Security & Privacy settings.
  • Step 7: Reopen Spotify once more.

Moreover, remember that Spotify may be prohibited if you’re using a public computer connected to your employer’s or school’s network.

The Spotify website shouldn’t load at all if this is the case.

Songs on the Web Player won’t Load

There are certain instances where the songs you’re trying to load are considered to be protected content.

Usually, Spotify will alert you with a notification box that says, ‘Playback of protected content is not enabled’.

To allow unrestricted access, you can use the steps below:

  • Open the Apple icon and select ‘System Preferences’
  • Tap on ‘Parental Controls’
  • Click on the padlock icon in the bottom left, and enter your password.
  • Click Unlock.
  • Select your user account from the left pane. Click on ‘Allow unrestricted access to websites ’  and save your changes.

Another reason why you may find your songs not loading is that you’re signed into many devices. Spotify allows users to sign in on up to 5 different devices.

It is not supposed to be an issue but it can happen that the interaction between the different devices can affect playback.

To resolve this, you can use the steps below:

  • Launch Spotify on your web browser.
  • Now launch the Spotify app on your phone.
  • Tap on the gear icon to open ‘Settings’
  • Scroll to ‘Devices’
  • Different devices that you’re signed on to will be displayed.
  • Switch between the devices, then finally select ‘Web Player’

This can trigger the web player to play your songs again.

Alternatively, you can sign out of all your devices with the steps below :

  • Launch Spotify on your Mac device.
  • Open the ‘Account Overview’  page.
  • Click on ‘Sign Out Everywhere’
  • You should be signed out of Spotify on all of your devices.
  • Sign in to Spotify again.

An unstable connection can also cause your web browser to lag, which can result in your songs on the web player not playing.

If you try to load other pages and there is a lag in their loading, then you should consider that the fault lies in your internet connection.

The first thing would be to restart your router and then try loading your browser pages again .

If the lagging continues, then your next stop is to disconnect your device from the network completely.

The steps below will help you to do this:

  • Open the Apple Menu.
  • Scroll to ‘System Settings’ and tap on ‘Wi-Fi’
  • Select ‘Details’ next to the connected network
  • Now click on ‘Forget this network’ and then select ‘Remove this network’
  • Give it a few minutes, then reconnect to the network again.

Spotify Web Player keeps Freezing or Won’t Play at all

If your Spotify web player doesn’t launch at all, it could be because the DNS cache is full; thus it may have glitches.

What is DNS?

  • The Domain Name System, or DNS, converts human-readable domain names (like www.techpenny.com) into computer-understandable IP addresses (for example, 192.0.2.44).
  • Numbers are used by every device connected to the Internet, including your laptop, smartphone, and the servers that host the content for huge retail websites.
  • The term “IP address” refers to these digits.
  • You don’t need to memorize and input a long number when you open a web browser and visit a website.

As an alternative, you can type a domain name like example.com and still land on the correct page.

Nowadays, a lot of computers attempt to deliver better Internet service by locally caching web pages and related data.

And after that, loading a website is quicker and simpler, but occasionally, it might cache incorrect data or errors.

The page won’t open as a result, nor will the Spotify Web Player.

In this situation, you should remove all of your browser’s cached data, including cookies, history, temporary files, and so on.

You can also clean up the DNS cache on your PC.

The DNS cache flush option in the Safari browser is hidden within the Develop settings. You must first enable the Develop menu before you can access the option to clear the DNS cache.

You can use the steps below  to clear the DNS cache on your PC:

  • Navigate to the Safari menu bar and select the ‘Safari’ option. Select the ‘Settings’ option.
  • Now, check the box next to the ‘Show Develop’ menu in the menu bar. Close the window with advanced settings.
  • Return to the Safari menu bar and select the ‘Develop’ option.
  • Finally, in the drop-down menu, select ‘Empty Caches’. It will clear the DNS cache in the browser.

Another way to fix your web player not playing is to log out of your Spotify Account.

Being logged on to multiple devices can confuse Spotify as a platform causing it to freeze.

You can follow these steps to log out of your Spotify Account on all your synced devices:

  • Choose ‘Log Out’
  • You can select ‘Sign out everywhere’ if you have numerous devices signed into your Spotify account.
  • Press “Ctrl/Fn + F5” to reload the Spotify Web Player page after signing out.
  • Finally, sign back into your account by visiting the Spotify Account Login Page.

Use Safari extensions on your Mac

Safari extensions enhance and customize the browsing experience on your Mac. Here's how to install them, uninstall them, or share them across devices.

Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Click Install.

After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.

After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).

Click Extensions.

Select the checkbox next to the extension's name. Learn what to do if you can't turn on extensions .

If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app

When browsing in a private window in macOS Sonoma or later, all extensions that require website access are turned off by default. To use an extension when browsing privately:

Choose Safari > Settings.

Select the extension in the sidebar, then select “Allow in Private Browsing” on the right.

Whether or not you're browsing privately, you can also restrict the extension's access to certain websites. Click the Edit Websites button to view the extension in Websites settings. From there you can allow access, deny access, or require that websites ask you for access.

When using Safari profiles , extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.

Share button

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.

To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.

If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it.

To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button.

Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.

To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.

Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click the Privacy Report button in your toolbar for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

safari web player

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.
